Ruby Princess Itineraries

Ruby princess review, review of ruby princess.

The 2008-built Ruby Princess cruise ship is the 9th and last Grand-class Princess Cruises liner, with sisterships Caribbean ,  Diamond ,  Golden (now Pacific Adventure) ,  Grand ,  Crown , Emerald ,  Star (now Pacific Encounter)  and  Sapphire .

The vessel (IMO number 9378462) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310567000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Ruby Princess cruise ship

The 3100-passenger ship Ruby Princess follows the highly evolutionary Crown Princess and Emerald Princess cruise ships. The vessels are virtually the same in layout and design, so if travellers have sailed on Crown, they will not have any trouble finding their way around Emerald or Ruby. But for those who have not travelled on Princess' Grand-class vessels, or for cruisers for whom a Ruby Princess sailing is their first cruise with the line, the ship is going to surprise, and in most cases, delight them with far higher levels of kitchen, service and facilities than passengers would expect on a stylish, mega-vessel catering to over 3,000 guests.  For the most part, Ruby Princess isn't an innovator. The cruise liner has all the most popular Princess facilities - like the 3-deck Piazza with its own bakery, as well as many of those found on older vessels, including the Sanctuary (adults sundeck) and speciality restaurants Sabatini's and Crown Grill.

Although there are not too many surprises on this newest Grand-class vessel, there are some gentle improvements and enhancements. On the Ruby cruise ship, Princess has expanded the appeal of the Wheelhouse Bar (pub) to include English-inspired lunches. Suite guests have the option to enjoy intimate breakfasts at Sabatini's. The new Ultimate Ship Tour allows guests to explore normally never seen onboard spaces, such as the engine room, funnel, photo lab, Navigation Bridge. Among the expanded enrichment projects are Mixology@Sea (bartending skills) and Navigation@Sea (cruise ship navigation lessons).

Decks and Cabins

Most Ruby Princess staterooms (1530 total, in 33 grades) are 170-ft2 balcony cabins (680). Almost 80% of the ship's outside staterooms have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 31. The largest accommodations are the Balcony Suites (410 ft2 / 38 m2, with terrace sized 180 ft2 / 17 m2).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Ruby Princess features three dining rooms, all offering tasteful, Caribbean-themed menu. Botticelli is for fixed-seating dining, while Michaelangelo and Da Vinci are for passengers who have chosen "Anytime Dining". Reservations are available but are not required. Da Vinci also welcomes guests for waiter-service breakfast and lunch. Rotating menu options include soups, appetizers, mains and desserts. There are also signature pasta and choices like Caesar salad and salmon. The healthy Lotus Spa selections are low in sodium and fat. Cafe Caribe and Horizon Court look identical and are open all day long. The Horizon section serves as a lido buffet restaurant and features breakfast buffets. Lunch choices may include unusual dishes like peanut butter sandwiches and fried banana. There is also the Italian-styled piazza, around which are located the International Cafe (with its wonderful coffees and scrumptious pastries, quiche and chocolate fondue); across the way is Vines, ship's wine and sushi bar (it's got the only really good wine list onboard Ruby).

In January 2016 Celebrity chef Curtis Stone teamed up with  Princess Cruises  for his first-at-sea speciality restaurant serving high-quality, inventive food. During Ruby Princess' dry dock, Share replaced the signature Italian Sabatini's and introduced new bedding, dining options, entertainment and more. Share is only open for dinner and applies a $39 cover charge. Its menu features five areas from which to select multiple dishes and a charcuterie platter. It's hard to order only one of each, as there are enticing recipes like a twice-cooked duck with fennel, parmesan crumb and bacon jus; or shrimp salad with turnip, citrus salt, brioche and lemon gel.

Share is only found on board  Emerald Princess  and Ruby Princess, for now. "Crafted by Curtis" dishes are on the MDR menus fleetwide. If you wonder why to pay extra at Share, here are the cool things about the brand new Curtis Stone restaurant which make it worth the splurge. Food like this cannot be found anywhere else on the ship. Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess are simple when it comes to dining venues. Before Share, both ships had three main dining rooms, a steakhouse and a buffet, all of which average in terms of overall experience and quality. From its celebrity chef to its natural ingredients and perfectly sized portions, you won't find food like Share's anywhere else on the ship.

Perfect for couples and large groups. This space is open, airy and large, with long tables and more intimate seating arrangements. Large groups have enough room to engage and share dishes. Couples can enjoy more peace and quiet. The ambience is upscale, yet not stuffy. Share's family-style dining and chic decor allow guests to dress their best and still feel relaxed. Passengers will feel more like they're in someone's home, talking and passing plates across the table.

Service at Share is second to none. The wait staff is knowledgeable about the menu and all ingredients handpicked by the celebrity chef's team. According to Stone: "The enthusiasm in that kitchen right now is actually unparalleled to anything I've ever done; they're so energetic and so up for it."

Guests will have room for dessert. Appetizers, entrees and dessert options, complementing a cheese plate, are conservative in size. Passengers will not only expand their palate by picking at multiple dishes but will also be able to satisfy their sweet tooth.

Follows the complete list of Ruby Princess restaurants and food bars.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Princess Ruby Theater is the main venue on Ruby Princess for comedy acts and production shows with a variety of music and selections appealing to a broad mix of ages. Each of the ship's venues has a different offering. Crooners feature music trivia contests and a pianist. Explorer's Lounge hosts events for everything from Wii sports tournaments to art auctions, plus comedy shows and magicians. The Piazza offers various demonstrations, circus-lite acts and musical performances throughout the day. Club Fusion is a part game show, part nightclub venue. Skywalker Nightclub, Princess' trademark, hosts the 70's-, the 80's- and the 90's-inspired nights and a few nights with a variety of modern music. Ruby Princess Wiki

Princess Cruises Ruby ship is the fleet's last Grand-class liner ( Fincantieri Monfalcone -built), with (same-designed) sisterships Crown and Emerald . The other (similarly-designed) fleetmates in this class are Caribbean , Diamond , Golden (now Pacific Adventure) , Grand , Sapphire , Star (now Pacific Encounter) .

The liner was christened on November 6, 2008, at  Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades) Florida . Its godparents (Trista and Ryan Sutter) met at ABC's dating show "The Bachelorette", then fell in love and got married. The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) started on November 8, out of Fort Lauderdale.

Skywalkers Night Club (ship's disco) is located aft of the funnel. It's not hanging over the stern, like on the sisterships from the modified Grand-Class (Emerald and Crown) and also unlike Diamond and Sapphire. Fun fact is that Ruby Princess was the first ship to offer "The Ultimate Ship Tour". This program allows passengers to have a look at the shipboard organization process.

In December 2018, Ruby became the world's first cruise liner allowing Chinese passengers to make onboard shopping payments via both Alipay and WeChat Pay - China's top-two popular digital payment platforms. Alipay's in-store payment service covers 40+ countries, and as of 2018 is used by over 900 million people worldwide. WeChat Pay (as of 2018) has around 800 million monthly users worldwide. In 2017, its total volume was around USD 6.5 trillion. Alipay digital payment was introduced on Majestic Princess during ship's 2017 summer homeporting in Shanghai .

Ruby Princess refurbishments review

The ship's drydock refurbishment in 2015 (done in  Vancouver BC Canada /December 3-14) was mainly for general maintenance and resulted in the following deckplan changes:

Two new premium dining venues were added. “SHARE by Curtis Stone” is a family-style restaurant by Curtis Stone (an Australian celebrity chef). Its menu features charcuterie (premium quality meat products), composed salads, homemade pasta, gourmet desserts. The new “Salty Dog Gastropub” cuisine experience (by chef Ernesto Uchimura) is provided by a classic pub menu offered nightly in the Wheelhouse Bar (on Promenade Dec 7) with craft beers and pub favorites served in small plates.

In 2015, aft on Sun Deck 16, “SHARE” replaced "Sabatini’s” – the Italian restaurant, featured on the Princess ships Caribbean, Coral, Emerald and Sun. “SHARE” restaurant debuted on Emerald Princess (in 2015 December). The “Salty Dog Gastropub” debuted on Crown Princess (in 2015 October).

All cruise cabins were upgraded with the new "Princess Luxury Bed".

Club Class Mini-Suite services and amenities were introduced.

The ship’s gym was upgraded with new sports equipment and free weights.

During drydock 2018 (October/USD 8,2 million project) the ship received 3 new dining venues - Slice Pizzeria, The Salty Dog Grill and SHARE (by Curtis Stone).

Ruby Princess' last drydock refurbishment was in 2023 (September 24 through October 22) conducted at Vigor Shipyard in Portland Oregon USA . The 1-month drydocking was mainly for regularly scheduled maintenance and classification works, including a technical overhaul.

Fodor’s Expert Review

Ship overview.

Princess Cruises

Ala...an, Hawaii

Gal... Vancouver

Within the Princess fleet, Ruby Princess is on the smaller end of the scale, but she is by no means small. At 113,561 gross tonnage and a maximum capacity of 3,080 passengers, the ship will appeal to those who want a decent variety of dining, bar, and entertainment options, without sacrificing on service. Ruby Princess still delivers the signature guest experience the cruise line is known for. Read More

Ruby’s passenger demographic depends on the itinerary’s length and destination. Generally the ship attracts a multicultural mix of Americans and Canadians from 40 to 70 years of age. The Princess app, a key part of the cruise experience, is available in English, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Japanese, German, Spanish, and Russian, a testament to how the company tries to cater to international guests. Longer sailings and Alaska skew older, though grandkids do tag along in the summer months. The shorter five- to-seven day Mexico and Caribbean winter getaways attract more families and multigenerational groups. The newly refurbished, beautifully decorated Camp Discovery kids’ club ensures youth are well entertained.

Adults will also be entertained if they enjoy audience participation and friendly competition. The program is stacked with these types of activities, from pickleball and ping pong, to amped-up game shows like Deal or No Deal in the main theater.

When it comes to programming, don’t expect high-octane thrills. There are the expected production shows, talented musicians, and dance classes, but the ship is also conducive to relaxation. It has four pools (one with a retractable roof), seven hot tubs, 13 bars/lounges serving alcohol, plenty of deck space, a casino (smoking permitted), spa, Thermal Suite, and The Sanctuary, an adults-only area at the bow of Deck 17, above the Lotus swimming pool. The breezy, shaded area and its deluxe, cushy loungers are ideal for scenic days at sea. It is $20 for a half day, $40 for a full day, or $60 when going through the Panama Canal or Glacier Bay. Ruby Princess also has a library, an increasingly rare feature on ships.

Ruby Princess is an older ship. To give you an idea, it was christened in 2008 by Trista and Ryan Sutter from the The Bachelorette, a reference only those who lived the reality TV craze of the late aughts would understand. Though it was refurbished in 2018, the vessel shows its age with its dated theater and boring, albeit serviceable, comfortable staterooms. Ruby is scheduled for a dry dock makeover September/October 2023.

On the upside, Princess’ MedallionClass technology has already been fully integrated into the experience. The free quarter-sized waterproof medallion does much more than unlock your stateroom door. In conjunction with the app, set up an arrival time and have contactless boarding. Use it to find your cabin mates on the ship. Order food/drink and have it delivered to almost anywhere. Use digital portals to make dinner reservations or bookmark events, among many other things. A pamphlet in the stateroom on embarkation day explains how it works.

Despite its age, the ship has noteworthy features. The Piazza, the golden atrium spanning three decks, is gorgeous and grand. Bright lighting, marble floor, glass elevators, sweeping staircases, and a domed chandelier help the space soar. Three different bars, a 24-hour cafe, and live music are all reasons to linger here. Multiple shops around the atrium deliver a galleria shopping experience. Browse handbags, cosmetics, Effy jewelry, perfume, watches, and cosmetics. Buy accessories for your medallion, such as wristbands or keychains. Shop Calypso Cove for sundries, basic medicine, snacks, cruise wear, alcohol, and Princess branded merchandise. The photo center sells binoculars and Go Pros.

Sabatini’s and Crown Grill, Ruby Princess’ two specialty restaurants, have an ambience and decor you would find in an upscale restaurant on land. Both have a reasonable cover charge of only $25 and $29 per person respectively. Wheelhouse Bar has also hopped onto the gastropub trend and serves rich, gourmet pub bites. Dining options are ample for Ruby’s one- to-two week itineraries.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

What to expect on board, staterooms & cabins.

Ruby Princess has a total of 1,542 staterooms, of which 1,106 are outside and 456 are inside. The age of the ship is reflected in the rooms’ dated style and furnishings, lack of USB plugs, and some awkward design features. All bathrooms, even of the top category, use Princess’ standard Lotus Spa bath products. Overall, the staterooms are comfortable and feature a neutral, calm palette of beige, cream, and brown.

The 682 balcony (214-222 square feet), 218 Ocean view (146-206 square feet), and 436 inside (158-162 square feet) cabins all have a queen or two twin beds, a generous amount of closet space, flat-screen TV, mini bar, desk/vanity, and a function-over-fashion bathroom with tiled floor, shower curtain, and adequate counter space. Extra beds come in the form of Pullman beds, except for a few balcony rooms that have a sofa bed. Balconies are accessed by a sliding glass door and have metal patio furniture. The surprisingly deep balconies are covered in a blue anti-slip mat that has seen better days.

For the 178 mini-suites (323 square feet), the balconies are less deep, the space given to the small sitting area that has a sofa bed and coffee table. Compared to the balcony staterooms, mini-suites are more spacious. They sport private balconies, two televisions, and a bathtub-shower combo. A built-in half-circle bar/shelf/cupboard that divides the sitting area from the bedroom is a clunky design decision; the shape and location makes for awkward storage. A floating shelf between the bed and bathroom is just the perfect height and location to accidentally walk into it in the middle of the night.

There is plenty of space to spread out in the 26 Suites (460-932 square feet). Suite guests can look forward to a number of perks, including one complimentary mini-bar setup, bottled water, laundry service, and a specialty dining dinner on embarkation evening. They also get priority embarkation and disembarkation. There is no private lounge for suite guests on Ruby; however, they may enjoy Sabatini’s as a private breakfast restaurant and club class dining.

Overall, the interiors are not the most modern, but all rooms have been upgraded for OceanMedallion entry. A digital touch screen at the entrance senses your medallion as you approach and will unlock the door and display any messages. Use the touch screen to request privacy or housekeeping service.

Ruby Princess has 31 wheelchair-accessible cabins: one suite, four mini-suites, 16 balcony, four outside, and six inside. They do not have automatic doors.

To request special assistance or equipment, the company requires submission of the mobility questionnaire at least 60 days prior to sailing.

ADA seating at the Princess Theater is at the back row. There is a dedicated wheelchair lift to access the Thermal Suite, which is one level below the spa.

Food & Drink

Ruby Princess has a well-balanced variety of both complimentary and paid dining options.

For complimentary dining, there is a buffet, three main dining rooms, two casual poolside options , a 24-hour cafe, and 24-hour room service. Horizon Court is the breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet on Lido deck 15, adjacent to Calypso Reef & Pool. The food stations are in a semi-enclosed area, which can feel cramped. However, they are able to enforce hand sanitizer use upon entering the area.

Crudities, prepared salads, and tapas are in individual serve bowls, making for easy self-service, elegant presentation, and safer food hygiene. Passengers can help themselves to bread, a salad bar, cold cuts, sandwiches, soups, pastas, grilled or roasted meats and seafood, plenty of side dishes, Indian food, rice, and Asian stir-fry. There are both cold and warm desserts. Gluten-free dishes are labeled.

Ruby Princess has three main dining rooms: Botticelli, Da Vinci, and Michelangelo; reservations recommended. The rooms are all similar in style and as the name suggests, the spaces have subtle Italian/European flair. Renaissance-style artwork and motifs adorn the chestnut walls. Golden accents, wall sconces, beige wooden chairs, and a flashy patterned carpet create a classic setting. Da Vinci has a section for Club Class, which means a separate entrance, priority seating (no reservations required), a dedicated service team, and an expanded menu.

Princess Cruise Line no longer does traditional dining with assigned seating and set time. Of course, passengers can make reservations for their preferred time, but there is no guarantee it will be the same table or server. The dinner menu changes daily, except for the “Princess Favorites,” five core dishes always available: shrimp cocktail, romaine and kale caesar salad, French onion soup, salmon, and pan-roasted chicken breast. From the daily menu, expect three starters, three salads/soups, two pastas, and mains that include at least one vegetarian, fish, poultry, and red meat. Think beef Wellington, Southeast Asian curried noodles, rum-marinated island spiced jerk chicken, or breaded lemon sole in tarragon butter.

When feeling peckish, you’ve got several casual options. Aside from 24-hour room service and grab-and-go pizza at Slice, The Salty Dog Grill (formerly known as Trident Grill) jazzes up the usual poolside burger and hot dog menu, adding pulled pork sandwiches, chipotle-lime chicken tacos, and loaded chili cheese fries. The 24-hour International Cafe at the Piazza serves specialty coffee, baked treats, and snacks. Or use the app to order food to almost anywhere on the ship.

For a refined dining experience, try the three specialty restaurants. In terms of layout, style, and decor, Crown Grill and Sabatini’s both feel like a restaurant you’d find on land, a welcome modernization for a ship built in 2008. Crown Grill is the most popular and it is strongly recommended to make reservations as soon as possible on the first day. Going for the feel of a cozy upscale London pub, the space exudes warmth through ruddy cherry wood paneling on the walls and ceiling, red carpets, green leather chairs, velvety booths, green marble, and brass railing. The restaurant is divided into intimate sections. In the middle of the very long open show kitchen is a semi-circlular bar. For a cover charge of only $29 per person, feast on appetizers such as Mediterranean-style spiny lobster cake, black tiger prawn and papaya salpicon, or seared jumbo sea scallops and salmon caviar with herb beurre blanc. For the main, choose chops, steaks, or surf and turf, accompanied by your choice of sides and special salt.

Sabatini’s on Ruby Princess couldn’t be more different than the Sabatini’s on Sapphire Princess, which has the cliche Italian decor of Roman columns, paintings of Tuscan towns, and faux brick walls. On Ruby, Sabatini’s is contemporary and chic. Charcoal walls, chocolate leather low-backed banquettes, white curtains, and hand blown glass pendant lighting set the mood. The restaurant used to be SHARE, family-style dining by celebrity chef Curtis Stone, before the partnership ended. This explains the attractive set of high communal tables that are at the center of the dining room. The interior may feel new, but passengers who have sailed Princess before will be familiar with the menu. A cover charge of $25 per person gets you a filling dinner of a soup or salad, antipasti, fresh pasta, entree, and dessert. The selection is a cut above the basic Italian dishes. Expect pappardelle with wine-braised beef cheek ragu, roasted lamb tortelloni, and seafood al cartoccio (a medley of seafood wrapped in parchment and steamed).

In the evening, Wheelhouse Bar turns into The Salty Dog Gastropub. At a cover charge of $18 per person, choose two indulgent plates from a select menu that includes lobster mac & cheese, fried chicken sandwich, beef short rib poutine, and according to the crew, the best burger on the ship. Beyond Burger and three other vegetarian plates are available.

From quiet corners to spirited bars delivering good spirits, Ruby Princess has 13 outlets to enjoy an alcoholic beverage. The emphasis is on comfort. Every bar or lounge is usually furnished with clusters of comfortable armchairs, sofas, and padded bar stools.

The Piazza alone has three bars. Vines, the wine bar, is the least inspired of the lot, though it has the best view of the entertainment in the center. Good Spirits At Sea combines cocktails featuring regional ingredients and flavors with a little storytelling; twice an evening the bar has a mixology show to highlight the special drinks. Green velvet armchairs fill Crooners Bar, which wraps around the atrium on deck 7. Music motifs on the walls, lamps on glossy black, low tables, and nightly piano entertainment give it a New York piano bar vibe.

Along the same note, Adagio is a jazz-themed bar tucked away at the stern on deck 16. Service here is in the evening only, making this a pleasant indoor place in the daytime for a quiet activity. Remember, you can order food and drink to you through the app.

Looking for life and action? The entire evening could be spent at nautical-themed Wheelhouse Bar since it has a dance floor, stage, and gastropub food menu. Explorer’s Lounge is the place for trivia, game shows, challenges, and live music. Concentric rows of bistro tables surround the stage and screen. As the name suggests, the theme of the eye catching decor is the olden days of exploration and tomb raiding of Asian antiquities. At Club Fusion, large scale photos pay homage to the Golden Age of Hollywood. This is the energy-filled venue for dance classes and bingo by day, music trivia and theme parties at night. The club is equipped with professional lighting and sound equipment, plus an enormous dance floor.

The aptly named Skywalkers Nightclub (18 years and over) all the way up on deck 18 kicks off at 10:30 pm with a theme hour of hits followed by a DJ dance party until late. Floor to ceiling panoramic windows and sky-high views makes this a terrific place to be during sail away.

Entertainment

Ruby Princess’ entertainment is all about engagement. Hopefully you enjoy competition because the daily program is chock-full of games and challenges. In a single day at sea you might have pickleball open play, speedy sudoku, a poker tournament at the casino, mahjong, boardgames, bridge, jackpot bingo, ping pong, golf putting, darts, spelling bee, The Voice of the Ocean singing auditions, and several kinds of trivia and game shows, including Deal or No Deal, music trivia, and trivia showdowns versus ship officers. Phew! Don’t forget the hosted and unhosted get togethers to connect: Singles and solos, LGBTQ+, veterans and military personnel, bible study, knitters, and Friends of Bill W.

Older in style and layout, the Princess Theater features production shows centered on singing, musicians, and dance—no high-wire acrobatics, trampolines, or lasers here. Other nights showcase a soloist, comedian, or game show.

Live music kicks off at the Piazza around 4 pm and continues with different sets all evening. Catch the Good Spirits at Sea mixology show, also at the Piazza every evening. Then it’s a tough choice between catching musical talent at Crooners Bar, Wheelhouse Bar, Explorers Lounge, or Club Fusion, before late night DJ and dancing at Skywalkers Nightclub. Or eschew it all for casual Movies Under the Stars, on deck 16.

Spa & Fitness

Occupying the entire bow of deck 16, the Lotus Spa includes a beauty salon, fitness centre, and thermal suite. It wraps around the Lotus pool and hot tubs, which is open to all passengers, not just spa guests. Lotus flowers, Chinese artwork of nature, and black lacquer decorate this Asian-inspired wellness center. Their most loved treatments are the Aroma Seaweed Massage ($299 for 100 minutes) and the Elemis BIOTEC Facial targeting specific skin issues ($229 for 50 minutes). Popular with older guests are Ionithermie Leg Therapy ($99) which helps with fluid retention, R3 Pain Management Therapy ($299 for 100 minutes), and acupuncture. Treatment rooms are simple and calm, and have windows to gaze at the ocean once you peel yourself off the bed.

The salon has four hair stations, two nail technicians, teeth whitening, and barber services. A doctor on staff administers Medi-Spa aesthetic treatments such as Restylane dermal fillers, Thermage, and DYSPORT cosmetic wrinkle treatments. A 18 percent service charge is added to all spa treatments.

Located at the front of the ship, the fitness center (6 am to 10 pm) has the type of equipment expected of a gym. Elliptical machines and treadmills are positioned at the windows. At the center is the enormous aerobics studio stocked with stationary bikes, mats, weights, stability balls, and aerobic step platforms. A studio this large is a rarity on new ships. Join free classes like abs, stretch, and body conditioning, while TRX, Pilates, yoga, and spin cost $20 per class, or 3 for $39.

The Thermal Suite is small but has all that one needs to follow the tradition of alternating between hot and cold, wet and dry. There is one regular steam room, one aroma steam room, a warm and cold rain shower, heated tile loungers, as well as a gentle dry sauna, its warm tiled seats curving to fit the body just right. A wheelchair elevator means the experience is accessible. Passes are sold for the length of the cruise. For example, on a 10-day itinerary it is $196. Day passes are sold only if there is space.

Key cruising tips

Health & safety.

Most mask, vaccination, and testing requirements have been lifted, except itineraries for countries where restrictions remain. Travelers can consult the CruiseHealth tool on the Princess website to learn about requirements for their upcoming voyage.

A health advisory letter in the stateroom on embarkation day recommends wearing face masks while indoors and reminds of good hygiene practices such as hand washing and covering the mouth when sneezing or coughing.

Princess’ MedallionClass technology helps to reduce physical contact. Using the app and the wearable medallion the size of a quarter, you can select an arrival time for staggered embarkation, have a contactless arrival, keyless entry into your stateroom, and contactless payment at outlets. Also order food/drink on the app instead of waiting in line. QR code menus are still being utilized at restaurants.

On embarkation day, rather than crowding the muster stations for the traditional safety briefing, passengers watch it on their stateroom TV or app, then check-in at the muster station before sailing.

Dress for the cruise the same way you would for a nice resort. In the daytime, casual sportswear, lightweight pants, shorts, and sundresses are acceptable.

In the dining rooms, the dress code is smart casual or formal. For smart casual, men should wear pants and collared shirts or dress shirts, while women can wear dresses, slacks, skirts, blouses, and sweaters. Shorts, pool/beachwear, baseball caps, and jeans with holes are not allowed. There is one formal night for every week of sailing and you are expected to dress up. Men can wear a tuxedo, dark suit, or dinner jacket, women an evening gown, cocktail dress, or elegant pant suit.

Junior Cruisers

Young sailors are spoiled with the recently refurbished Camp Discovery kids’ club. Three spacious, fun-filled rooms offer a nature-themed escape from the adults: The Tree House (ages 3-7), The Lodge (ages 8-12), and The Beach House teen lounge (ages 13-17).

Partnering with the Discovery and Animal Planet brand, the spaces and complimentary activities tie into wildlife, nature, and exploration. The walls are covered in murals of colorful geometric trees, stones, and animals. On the schedule there might be “Shark Attack Night” with shark themed games, slime making, learning the science of magic, and challenges designed by the California Science Center.

Aside from programmed activities, the rooms are well-stocked for free play. The Tree House has an indoor playground, puppet theater, arts and craft tables, and oodles of space to run around. Both The Lodge and The Beach house have an air hockey table, foosball, skee-ball, and gaming consoles. Teens can hang out, play ping pong, and join gaming tournaments, movie nights, or parties.

Ruby Princess has a passenger to crew ratio of 2:57 to 1. The cruise line tends to attract a more multicultural American and Canadian passenger base. Princess’ international crew are adept at delivering professional, friendly service to people of different backgrounds and ages.

Like other premium cruise lines, a service charge/crew appreciation is automatically added, per guest, per day. For Interior, Oceanview, and Balcony staterooms it is $14.50, Mini-Suite and Club Class $15.50, Suite $16.50. Tip staff directly to recognize someone for extra good service.

A 17 to 18 percent service charge is automatically added to spa, beverages, beverage packages, and dining.

Ruby Princess Cruise Ship

princess ruby cruise

 Linda Garrison

Princess Cruises launched the Ruby Princess in November 2008. Although the Ruby Princess is almost identical to her two older sisters, the Emerald Princess and the Crown Princess , she has a few different features that cruisers will enjoy.

Suite passengers will love the opportunity to enjoy an exclusive breakfast in Sabatini's Italian Trattoria from approximately 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Guests love dining in Sabatini's, and opening it for breakfast to the passengers staying in the 28 suites is a great idea.

The Ruby Princess is using the piazza-area Vines bar to feature wine flights and pairings at Vines, and the International Cafe is a great option for casual dining.

The Ruby Princess also debuted a number of enrichment programs. These programs are aimed to expand passengers' horizons and include diverse topics like mixology, party planning, navigation, art history, and astronomy. In addition to being well fed, Ruby Princess passengers can leave the cruise more educated!

Ruby Princess - More New Features

The Ruby Princess includes other small, but important touches. Since guests on the Ruby Princess enjoyed these features, many have been incorporated into other Princess ships. When added together, they all make the cruise experience more memorable.

For example, in the Horizon Court buffet, fresh, cooked-to-order waffles are available at breakfast and throughout lunchtime, and the buffet now serves complimentary lemonade as a beverage choice. In the evening, several of the ship's public lounges offer a selection of canapes.

Cruisers who need to stay connected will certainly appreciate additional wireless hotspots around the Ruby Princess, including in the cabins. The ship is also equipped so that passengers can use their personal cellular phones if they have international roaming plans while onboard.

The Ruby Princess has many onboard activities that appeal to cruisers, and one "back of house" tour is a best seller. This "Ultimate Ship Tour" offers passengers an exclusive opportunity to experience an array of areas that are key to a ship's daily operations. The Ruby Princess "Ultimate Ship Tour" gives passengers the chance to explore beyond the public areas with visits to the ship's engine control room, medical center, print shop, laundry, photo lab, funnel, bridge and other spaces. In addition to getting a rare insider's view of many areas typically seen only by the ship's crew, participants will receive a variety of themed mementos at many of the stops along the route. The number of guests who can participate in this tour is limited, so be sure to book early.

In addition to all of these new features, the Ruby Princess continues to include many of the design, cuisine, and entertainment elements found on its sister ships. Let's tour the ship.

Ruby Princess Dining Options

The Ruby Princess has several excellent dining options . Princess pays a lot of attention to romance on the Ruby Princess ship, with many meals and delicacies like the dessert pictured above designed for romance.

The ship has three main dining rooms; two are used for Anytime dining at dinner, and the third is used for traditional, two-seating-times dinner.

Princess offers two optional dining options that will be among the most memorable you will ever experience. The first specialty meal on Princess ships is the Chef's Table . This meal starts with canapes and champagne in the galley, followed by an amazing meal accompanied by select wines, and ending with an elaborate dessert. For those looking for romance, an " ultimate balcony dinner " or breakfast is a real treat. The wait staff delivers each course to your balcony, the setting is romantic, and the food is exceptional.

In addition to these special meals, the Ruby Princess has many familiar dining venues. My favorite is Sabatini's specialty restaurant, with its Italian theme, but many cruisers rank the Crown Grill as their top choice. Both are excellent but have a small fee.

Those looking for a casual meal can eat in the Cafe Caribe or Horizon Court buffets, enjoy pizza from the pizzeria, or dine by the pool at the Trident Grill.

As you can see, there's no chance of hunger on the Ruby Princess!

Ruby Princess Staterooms and Suites

The Ruby Princess has five major types of staterooms:

  • Suite with balcony
  • Mini-suite with balcony
  • Oceanview double with balcony
  • Oceanview double without balcony
  • Interior with two lower beds

As would be expected, the prices for a suite are much higher than those for an interior cabin. Depending on their budgets, travelers need to decide where best to spend their vacation funds. Personally, I love having a balcony, but I have good friends who would rather cruise twice as often and stay in an interior cabin.

Princess Cruises has introduced a special exclusive breakfast in Sabatini's for suite passengers, providing an additional incentive for booking one of these beautiful accommodations.

Ruby Princess - Lounges and Bars

The Ruby Princess has three entertainment lounges--the Princess Theater, Explorers Lounge, and Club Fusion. The Princess Theater features Las Vegas-style production shows as well as other musical entertainment in the evenings. It is used for cultural and educational presentations in the daytime. The smaller Explorers Lounge often has comedians or musical groups, and Club Fusion has passenger-participation games like the "Newlywed Game" and "Princess Pop Star".

Each of the bars has a unique decor. The Wheelhouse Bar with its nautical theme sometimes features small jazz combos or other groups. The Adagio Bar next to Sabatini's Restaurant is quiet and elegant, and Crooner's Bar is in a great location overlooking the active Piazza below. Skywalkers Nightclub sits on the Sky Deck, high above the entire ship on deck 18 aft. It has terrific views in the daytime and in the evening. I also like the location of the outdoor Outrigger Bar, which overlooks the wake of the ship on the Lido Deck.

Ruby Princess Interior Common Areas

The most distinctive common area on the Ruby Princess is the towering Piazza on deck 5. The Piazza serves as the hub or the town square of the Ruby Princess, with live street entertainment scheduled throughout the day. The Internet Cafe, International Cafe, and Vines Bar are all located adjacent to the Piazza.

Moving up a couple of decks, the library, boutiques, Princess Theater, and tour desk are found on the Promenade deck.

The Youth Center has indoor and outdoor activities for young children up through teens.

Ruby Princess Outdoors

The Lido Deck on the Ruby Princess is the hub of outdoor activity, with two large swimming pools, Neptune's Pool and the Calypso Pool, both of which are surrounded by hundreds of deck chairs. The Lido Deck also has the buffet restaurants, a couple of casual eateries, and at least two bars. Passengers could almost just stay on this one deck and have a wonderful cruise vacation!

Photos of the Exterior Common Areas on the Ruby Princess

Ruby Princess - Spa, Fitness Center, and Sanctuary

The Ruby Princess offers many opportunities for its passengers to be either pampered or to improve their mental and physical well-being. The Lotus Spa, located on deck 16 forward, is a large spa with all the usual amenities.

Adjacent to the spa is a favorite area of the Ruby Princess-- The Sanctuary . It is a quiet, calming place for adults to escape from the excitement and onboard activities.

The Ruby Princess fitness center is large and impressive, with great views of the ocean from the treadmills. The fitness center has all the latest equipment, including spinners.

With all of these opportunities for relaxation and exercise, Ruby Princess passengers should return home rested and more fit. (Of course, those who drink, party, or eat too much may need a vacation from their vacation!)

Ruby Princess Review

The infirmary and steel drums.

Rating by category

Additional details.

We choose Princess because it sailed out of San Francisco. We were able to take the Amtrac train out of Fresno, CA at 6:00 AM and were in front of the Buffet at 11:30 AM. Embarkation was the easiest of all our cruises. Luggage taken right from the Uber along the curbside.

Every sea day was a hour practice on the steel drums for 30 shipmates. Leader of the drums, Wilson, was great. Much patience was shown. We played for our shipmates on the last sea day. Fun.

Cabin Review

Most spacious interior cabin yet on a Princess Cruise. Clean, always neat. We were one deck below the buffet. Easy to get to via stairs. I would love to get this cabin again.

'Love Boat' theme cruise setting sail later this year

princess ruby cruise

A new “ The Love Boat”-themed cruise will set sail later this year on the actual Love Boat – or as close as fans can get.

Princess Cruises , whose ships served as the backdrop for the beloved 1970s and ‘80s series, will offer the itinerary in August. The sailing marks the line’s second Love Boat cruise following its first outing in 2022, and will feature members of the original cast.

“We had such a blast connecting with fans on our theme cruise in 2022, so bringing it back in 2024 feels like it was meant to be, especially with the addition of some surprise guests,” Jill Whelan, who played Vicki Stubing in the show and serves as Celebrations Ambassador for the line, said in a news release . “Sailing with our fans brings us so much joy and this cruise will undoubtedly be a special reunion, taking us back to where it all began – on a Princess Cruise.”

When is the 2024 Love Boat cruise?

The week-long cruise will sail round-trip from New York on Aug. 31. The voyage will take place on the line’s 3,660-passenger Enchanted Princess ship, which launched in 2021 (the line has retired the vessels actually used in the show).

Where will the cruise sail?

The ship will visit Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Rockland, Maine; and Saint John and Halifax in Canada.

Along the way, guests will get face time with the cast, including Whelan; Bernie Kopell, who played doctor Adam “Doc” Bricker; Fred Grandy, who played purser Gopher, and Ted Lange, who played bartender Isaac. Ezra Freeman, the bartender from “The Real Love Boat,” a reality dating show inspired by the original series, will be on hand as well.

Activities include a sailaway party, meet-and-greet photo and autograph sessions and a cocktail demonstration hosted by Lange and Freeman. Passengers can also test their knowledge at “Love Boat” trivia and even participate in a symbolic vow renewal ceremony officiated by the stars, among other programming.

The line will also offer a VIP package that gives guests access to a cocktail party with the cast, move them to the front of the line for photos and autographs, and other parks.

Finding community on a theme cruise: From 'Star Trek' lovers to motorcycle enthusiasts

How much does the Love Boat cruise cost?

The sailing currently starts at $568 per person based on double occupancy, according to the line’s website . The fare includes the cruise’s themed activities, many restaurants on board, entertainment and more.

Princess will announce pricing for the VIP package at a later date.

This is the announcement bar for Poornima to test the Close Button.  It will expire May 31 2024.

What’s new for Florida cruises in 2024

ORLANDO, Fla. — The world’s largest cruise ship headlines a big comeback year for major hardware arriving in Florida.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas will make a sizable splash when it arrives in Miami in January, having taken over the title from what are now its little Oasis-class sisters.

But what will now be the second-largest cruise ship, Utopia of the Seas, the last of six Oasis-class behemoths, is also Florida-bound, arriving at Port Canaveral in July for its debut.

The Sunshine State will also see the newest Disney Cruise Line vessel with Disney Treasure’s arrival in December, on top of DCL’s opening of its new Bahamas destination, Lighthouse Point, which will pull in ship visits from both Port Canaveral and Disney’s new second Florida home in Port Everglades.

Port Everglades will also feature its own sizable debut when Princess Cruises’ new Sphere class vessel the Sun Princess arrives in October.

First up, though, is Royal Caribbean’s new flagship for its new class.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas

Debuts from PortMiami on Jan. 27, sailing seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries.

The 20-deck, 250,800-gross-ton, 1,198-foot-long cruise ship comes in about 15,000 gross tons bigger than, but with a layout similar to, Oasis-class vessels. It features eight neighborhoods carved out to support the flow of what could be 7,600 passengers on board at max capacity. The most notable is the new AquaDome neighborhood, a massive 363-ton engineering feat that sits at the top and front of the ship, which will be home to the line’s signature AquaTheater show, migrating from its traditional outdoor venue on Oasis ships.

Other new neighborhoods include: family-friendly Surfside, replacing the Boardwalk space on the aft of the ship; Thrill Island on the top deck, hosting the largest water park at sea, called Category 6, and a feature called the Crown’s Edge that is part ropes course and part thrill ride; Chill Island, also on the top deck, with the line’s first swim-up bar at sea, with in-water loungers and tables, among four pools within the neighborhood; and The Hideaway, which is home to a suspended infinity pool 135 feet above the ocean along with a multilevel sun terrace, more whirlpools and a bar.

The primary stage show is a version of “The Wizard of Oz,” while the ship is getting the largest skating rink in the fleet, home to even more entertainment productions, with each of the three main stages putting on two productions each per sailing.

New dining features on board include a 1920s-themed, high-end specialty space called Empire Supper Club, and a food hall concept called the AquaDome Market, with venues dedicated to macaroni and cheese and crepes among others.

Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas

Debuts from Port Canaveral on July 22, sailing three- and four-night Bahamas itineraries.

On what could be the final Oasis-class ship, the cruise line is giving it short cruise duties from the Orlando-area port, with each sailing making a stop at Royal’s private Bahamas island, Castaway Cay. Utopia is currently under construction at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France.

It will have more than 40 venues for food and beverage, including a new tiki bar concept called the Pesky Parrot that will be situated indoors on the Promenade, with fruit-based cocktails and frozen drinks. Also coming is an interactive dining experience themed as if participants were riding in a classic train car. The multi-course meal looks to allow for a simulated trip to different destinations, with changing story lines married to the cuisine. Similar to Icon of the Seas, Utopia's Central Park will be the new home for Izumi hibachi and teppanyaki, including the offshoot Izumi in the Park, a walk-up outdoor venue that serves fresh sushi and Japanese-inspired sweets.

One thing Oasis-class ships have that Icon of the Seas won’t is the popular 10-deck spiraling dry slide, The Ultimate Abyss. Utopia’s is set to be 43 feet longer than its sister ships’ versions, and will feature transparent windows and “zoom boosting rollers” within the tube to make the mat ride even faster.

Princess Cruises' Sun Princess

Debuts in February sailing the Mediterranean, but begins sailing from Port Everglades on Oct. 14 on seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries.

The first of a new Sphere class, with a 4,314-passenger capacity based on double occupancy, it’s the largest ship in the Princess fleet, coming in at 21 decks and 175,500 gross tons, which is about 30,000 more tons and 750 more guests than its last class of ships.

Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyards in Italy, its design will feature more balconies, a supersized 1,000-seat main theater called Princess Arena with an in-the-round layout with movable seats, and a three-deck main dining room.

A pair of unique offerings on the ship will be a bistro called The Butcher’s Block by Dario, from celebrity Tuscany butcher Dario Cecchini, and the Spellbound by Magic Castle venue in partnership with Hollywood landmark Magic Castle, a private club for the Academy of Magical Arts. The cruise venue will feature Victorian-era stylings amid themed rooms where servers will perform sleight-of-hand tricks while delivering theatrical cocktails.

Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Treasure

Debuts from Port Canaveral on Dec. 21 sailing seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries.

The 144,000-gross-ton, 4,000-passenger vessel sister ship to 2022’s Disney Wish will have a slew of unique features many of which pull from theme park nostalgia, including bars themed to the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It’s currently under construction at the Meyer-Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

Similar to Wish, its top-deck feature will be the AquaMouse, a mix of a dark ride themed to the animated Mickey Mouse cartoons and a water coaster similar to the AquaDuck found on Disney Dream and Fantasy.

A new Broadway-style stage show based on “Moana” will join existing shows “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Day” as it takes on the longer sailing duties while Disney Wish continues short Bahamas sailings. A new dinner theater concept around the Pixar film “Coco” will debut as well.

Other unique touches for the ship include Peter Pan and Captain Hook stern characters, an Aladdin-themed Grand Hall atrium and a new dessert venue with a "Zootopia" theme.

New at the ports

Port Canaveral isn’t just welcoming two new ships in 2024 with Disney Treasure and Royal’s Utopia of the Seas, but is also bringing in two new brands, as both Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises will begin regular service for the first time. Caribbean Princess arrives on Nov. 27 to sail six- and eight-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, while Celebrity Equinox arrives on Dec. 3 to sail mostly seven-night Caribbean itineraries. The older ships are the lines’ first forays into the Central Florida market, but Princess Cruises has already announced it will send one of its newer ships, Sky Princess, to the port in 2025.

PortMiami, meanwhile, expects MSC Cruises to finish its new terminal, which will help solidify its reclamation of the title of world’s busiest cruise port. MSC’s offering, which will be able to handle three megaships and 36,000 passenger movements daily, will join new and refurbished terminals from Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian and Virgin Voyages that have redefined the Miami skyline in the last few years.

Port Everglades will continue to welcome Disney fans to the revamped Terminal 4, the cruise line’s new second Florida home that opened in November. The 104,000-square-foot space will host both Disney Dream and Magic through the year, and will expand further in 2025.

Beyond Florida

Disney Cruise Line will open its second private Bahamas destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, welcoming the first ship on June 8. Over the summer the line is limiting visits to the 700-acre site on the southern tip of the island of Eleuthera to mostly sailings on board Disney Magic from Port Everglades during three-, four- or five-night voyages.

Disney Fantasy, though, will also make a pair of stops during longer trips from Port Canaveral, and then make several trips in the fall, while Disney Wish sailings will be limited to Disney’s original private destination, Castaway Cay.

Lighthouse Point includes a main beach, family beach and adults-only beach plus an arts and cultural pavilion, water play area with two slides, gaming pavilion, market-style dining, shopping and kids club.

It’s the first of three new cruise line projects coming online in the Bahamas, but neither Carnival Cruise Line’s Celebration Key on Grand Bahama Island nor Royal Caribbean’s tinier Royal Beach Club in Nassau will be ready until 2025.

Disney Cruise Line’ s new destination on the island of Eleuthera will be a vibrant beach retreat infused with the color and energy of Bahamian artistry. In addition to the pristine sands, families will enjoy a recreation center, dining, shopping, a water playground, a cultural pavilion and more. A brightly colored interactive family water play area will include...
