He takes you around the streets of Yogyakarta to let you taste the typical dishes and you can immediately see his personal touch in the selection of places and dishes. The Kopi Joss is good but probably the only really touristy experience on the tour. The tour is very enjoyable exactly because you get the feeling of walking around with a friend who takes you to discover his favorite dishes. Read more Written November 6, 2023

Plaosan Temple

Prambanan-Cycling-Tour

Plaosan temple is a heritage twin temple located in the east side of sewu temple. The temple is an ancient building compound comprising of two building complexes, Plaosan Lor Temple complex (lor is a Javanese word that means north) and Plaosan Kidul Temple complex (kidul is a Javanese word for south). The relief sculptures seen at the compound are fine and detailed, similar to sculptures found at Borobudur, Sewu and Sari Temples.

The North Plaosan Temple has middle courtyard encircled by wall with the entrance at the west side. In the middle of the courtyard, there is a hall as wide as 21.62 m x 19 m. At the eastern part of the hall, there are 3 altars, namely north, east and south altars. The pictures of Amitbha, Ratnasambhava, Vairochana, and Aksobya are at the east altar. Samantabadhara statue and Ksitigarba figure is at the north altar, while Manjusri picture is at the west alter.

The South Plaosan temple also has a hall at the center that is encircled by 8 small temples that is divided into 2 ranks and each rank consists of 4 temples. There also pictures of Tathagata Amitbha, Vajrapani with vajra attribute at the utpala and Pranjaparamita who was considered “the mother of all Buddha”. Some other pictures can still be found but not at their original places. Manujri figure that according to a Dutch scientist named Krom is significant can also be seen.

Part of this bas relief has unique picture of man and woman. There is a man described as sitting cross-legged with worshipping hands and a figure of a man with vara mudra and vse at his leg encircled by six smaller men. A woman is described as standing with vara mudra hands, while there are book, pallet, and vase around her. Krom explains that figures of those man and woman are descriptions of supporting patron from two monasteries.

Prambanan Temple

Prambanan or Rara Jonggrang is a 9th-century Hindu temple compound in Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, dedicated to the Trimūrti, the expression of God as the Creator, the Preserver and the Transformer. The temple compound is located approximately 17 kilometres northeast of the city of Yogyakarta on the boundary between Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces.

The temple compound, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and the second-largest in Southeast Asia. It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu architecture, and by the towering 47-metre-high central building inside a large complex of individual temples. Prambanan attracts many visitors from around the world.

The high structures are typical of Hindu architecture, and the plan of the temple complex is a Mandala, as is Borobudur. As a symbol of the Hindu cosmos, the temple is vertically divided into three parts, both vertically and in plan. The three part is divided into Jaba/Bhurloka, Tengahan/Bhuvarloka, and Njeron/Svarloka.

At the Garbagriha (innermost sanctum) of this temple sits a three meters statue of Shiva. Prambanan as a Hindu Temple was made High and slim compared to Borobudur, with the main Shiva shrine stands 47 meters in the middle of the complex surrounded with smaller temples. Prambanan has a bas-relief on the inner side of the gate around the three main shrine. The bas-relief tells the story about Ramayana and can be read from the east gate clockwise around the inner compound.

The Village Tour offers an enchanting contrast to the historical journey, as participants embark on a cycling expedition through the serene countryside and traditional villages that envelop the Prambanan area. As cyclists traverse picturesque landscapes of rice paddies, lush fields, and quaint settlements, they encounter the warm hospitality of local villagers who are eager to share their way of life. From witnessing traditional crafts to partaking in village rituals, participants gain an authentic insight into the customs and daily routines of these communities.

Biking Around Prambanan Temple

We go to Prambanan temple complex by bicycle. We go to Prambanan temple complex by bicycle.

Biking Around Prambanan Temple – The history cycling activity is a couple of interesting landscapes about historical sites, rice fields and rural culture daily life. This trip provide a different style to enjoying Yogyakarta’s tourism especially its historical sites, so this is a sensational experience in your visit to Yogyakarta.

Cycling to Prambanan

The terrain between Yogyakarta and the ancient temple complex is relatively flat, and thus ideal for tackling by bike (rather than getting stuck in suburban traffic!). We recommend heading out in the late afternoon as heat of the day subsides. Starting from Sambisari temple, the trail leads along tarmac paths through villages and through fields, giving a glimpse of the daily life of local farmers.

You will are welcome to stop and learn how they still cultivate and irrigate the land in the traditional way, and if travelling in season we you may well see locals busy planting, tending and harvesting – all by hand. The route will also take in Boko temple – visible amongst the green cluster of coconut trees high on a hill. A typical ride will take around 2.5 hours, at which point you will reach the Hindu temple of Prambanan. After exploring the temples you will be transferred back to the city by private car.

Before his Mexico Open rounds, Tour winner docked himself 4 and 3 strokes. Here's why

M att Wallace had a Thursday problem. And a Friday affinity. He was stuck. So the pro with the Thursday problem and the Friday affinity did something any wise person with a Thursday problem and a Friday affinity would do.

He punted on Thursday.

He went right to Friday.

And just like that, his week looks promising. Through two days in heavenly Vidanta, Mexico, Wallace is your 36-hole Mexico Open leader.

"Good focus, good determination," Wallace said, "and yeah, happy with the score."

How the 33-year-old Englishman arrived at this point will require a quick examination into the mental gymnastics we sometimes play. Along with a bit of math.

Wallace, for whatever reason, said he'd been struggling of late during Thursday opening rounds. He's not lying. Two weeks ago, at the WM Phoenix Open , he shot a 75. Two weeks before that, at the Farmers Insurance Open , he shot a 73. He said he got angered.

He also said he then got in gear. The next day at the Phoenix Open? Wallace fired a 64. The next day at the Farmers? He fired a 70.

Here, Wallace, a four-time DP World Tour winner and one-time PGA Tour winner, and caddie Jamie Lane started to think.

What if they tricked themselves? What if they were already down strokes to start a tournament, instead of after one day? They'd get fired up - from the opening bell. Couldn't hurt. They would take it seriously, too.

So Thursday, during the Mexico Open first round, Wallace believed he stood on the first hole - at four-over.

He birdied that hole, so he was three-over. Bogeyed the fourth, so he was back to four-over. Birdied 6, 7 and 9 and bogeyed 10, so he was two-over. Birdied 15, 16 and 18, putting him at a decent one-under.

Only, yeah, he had actually shot a five-under.

"Yesterday obviously in the afternoon Jamie came up with - well, basically we started tournaments pretty poorly this year," Wallace said Friday, "and it’s kind of been like, OK, we’ll see how it goes to start the tournament on Thursday. We find ourselves behind the 8-ball and then we’ve played really well on Fridays because we’ve been determined to get the score back.

"So we kind of came up with a system of starting over par so we’ve already played one round, right? To make the cut, you’ve got to get yourself into it. So yesterday was four-over and we managed to shoot one-under, which is five-under."

Would they do it again during Friday's second round?

Absolutely. This time, Wallace believed he was three-over. Starting on the back nine, he bogeyed the 10th hole, so he was four-over. He birdied 12 and 14, bogeyed 15 and birdied 18, so he was two-over. His final nine holes were special. He birdied 2, 5 and 7 and eagled 6, so he was three-under.

But really six-under.

And tied for the lead going into the weekend with three others.

"It’s not nice standing on that 10th tee three-over already," Wallace said. "Then I bogeyed it, so I was four-over so I had to get it back.

"That sort of determination and focus really helped."

Indeed.

Notably, Wallace said he didn't have a number in mind yet for Saturday or Sunday. Player and caddie will check the leaderboard first. The pins and the wind, too.

But yeah, in his head, Wallace will again be over par before he even swings the club.

"It’s just something to really focus me at the start of the day," he said, "rather than be joint leader or behind by two, whatever it may be."

UAE Tour: Olav Kooij wins tight sprint finish on stage 5

Dutchman claims victory in photo-finish with Merlier, Welsford third

How It Unfolded

It was the closest sprint yet at the UAE Tour , with Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) narrowly denying Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) his hat-trick of stage wins on stage 5 in a photo-finish victory.

Merlier was majorly out of position in the final kilometre, forced to launch from way down in the peloton with Kooij starting his sprint on the right-hand side of the road off the back of a strong Astana Qazaqstan lead out for Mark Cavendish .

As the Brit ran out of steam, Kooij made his dart for the line and just managed to pip Merlier by a few millimetres at the line with a great bike throw. Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe) was third after a significantly better leadout, but was just overhauled by Merlier and Kooij.

This was Kooij’s sixth win at WorldTour level and equally most prestigious, given the quality of the sprint field, alongside his stage victory at Paris-Nice in 2023.

“I’m really happy. I didn’t know, so we had to wait a bit, but after the first two sprints where it got better, you need to get everything to get the win and luckily today I did,” said Kooij immediately after the finish.

The tactics were clear for the Dutchman who nailed his targets for the final kilometre, in contrast to second place Merlier who started his sprint way down on the eventual winner after an absent leadout, albeit only narrowly losing out.

“Never hit too much with the headwind and try to get a good position in the last roundabout,” said Kooij of his tactics in the final.

“I thought maybe it was a bit far but then I could follow Mark Cavendish on the right and luckily saw a little gap to pass.”

It was victory number 30 for Kooij and another continuation of his journey to the upper echelons of sprinting. He is set to head to his first Grand Tour at the Giro d’Italia in May where he’ll hope to repeat his success with Wout van Aert as leadout.

The longest stage of the 2024 UAE Tour kicked off with the second early attack in as many days from Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Dstny), but this time the Belgian had a teammate with him in Lennert Van Eetvelt.

Jacopo Mosca (Lidl-Trek) also joined them, with Mark Stewart (Corratec-Vini Fantini) deciding against a fourth day in the break.

Van Eetvelt started the day 43 seconds down on race leader Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) and 12th overall after Rainer Kepplinger (Bahrain Victorious) was unfortunately forced to abandon with a broken hand sustained in a crash on stage 4.

The Belgian became the virtual leader on the road as the trio’s advantage grew to more than five minutes. He wasn’t hoping to make it to the finish with that lead but instead wanted the six bonus seconds available on the 182km route from Al Aqah to Umm Al Quwain.

Van Eetvelt swept up both intermediate sprints at Al Saadi Roundabout and Al Lebsa, moving him up to equal ninth overall with Vine’s teammate Mikkel Bjerg with a 37-second deficit to the Australian.

There were signs of chaos breaking out in the peloton as Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Dstny) crashed and Alpecin-Deceuninck and Soudal-QuickStep threatened to split the peloton in the increasing wind with 84km to go.

Nothing came of the accelerations and with Mosca reeled in around 60km from the finish, all focus turned to the approach to the sprint and planning how to stop Merlier from taking a hat-trick of stage wins at this year's race.

Roundabouts and a series of turns inside the final 10km reshuffled the pack and the positions of the sprint trains. The nerves were increasing with each change of direction stringing out the peloton and no team establishing full control.

The speeds flew up with 3km to go and Bora-Hansgrohe and Movistar were best placed at the front of proceedings. Merlier and Soudal Quick-Step remained calm in the bunch and were again looking to leave it late as they had done on stages 1 and 4.

Mark Cavendish’s Astana Qazaqstan train finally found its form with the Manxman entering the final in the first ten spots, but as Michael Mørkøv pulled off and Cavendish started his sprint, it was clear he didn’t have the speed.

Kooij had latched onto his wheel and the Brit allowed him enough of a gap up the inside of the barriers to come around. On the left-hand side of the road, Welsford had been piloted successfully enough by Danny van Poppel and launched his charge with Merlier in close pursuit.

The trio came to the line in a blanket finish with neither Merlier nor Kooij sure if they had taken the victory. As the photo-finish came in, it was the Dutchman who had just come out on top with Merlier just a tyre’s width behind at the line.

Tomorrow’s sixth stage will give Merlier and Soudal Quick-Step an immediate chance to exact revenge after missing out today with a poor leadout.

The 138km stage from the Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum to Abu Dhabi Breakwater will be the final chance for the fast men in the UAE, so expect a desperate and furious charge to the line as they try and get something out of the race ahead of the summit finish finale on Sunday at Jebel Hafeet.
