Music | san jose: homicide arrest made after woman found dead at home, music | review: ’80s pop music icon hits the concert trail instead of retiring, belinda carlisle kicks off west coast trek with napa, san francisco concerts..

Singer Belinda Carlisle, who performed with the Go-Go's during the band's 40th anniversary tour at the Fox Theater in Oakland in 2018, brought her new solo tour to the Bay Area for shows Aug. 18 and 20.

The year 2023 isn’t turning out the way Belinda Carlisle originally expected.

“I was planning on retiring and going up to the hills,” said the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who was enshrined as the member of The Go-Go’s in 2021.

Instead of retiring, however, Carlisle finds herself out on the road with the career-spanning Decades Tour, which kicked off the West Coast portion of its run with a solid show at the Meritage Resort in Napa on Friday (Aug. 18).

What happened?

Diane Warren happened.

The Grammy-winning songwriter — who penned Carlisle’s 1987 smash “I Get Weak” — reached out to the pop vocalist and offered up a new batch of songs for her to record.

The result is the fine new EP “Kismet,” which, as amazing as it sounds, stands as Carlisle’s first solo collection of English language pop songs in nearly a quarter century. (Her previous album, 2017’s “Wilder Shores,” was a series of Sikh chants performed in Gurmukhi, while the one before that, 2007’s “Voila,” was a collection of chansons done in French.)

Carlisle kicked off the 80-minute, 18-song show — part of Blue Note Napa’s Summer Sessions at Meritage — with a strong version of “(We Want) The Same Thing,” one of five selections on the night from 1989’s excellent, though somewhat underrated, “Runaway Horses.”

From there, the singer — who also performs Sunday at August Hall in San Francisco — pumped up the crowd by offering up the first Go-Go’s tune of the night, the classic “Head Over Heels” from the band’s third full-length, 1984’s “Talk Show.”

“It’s really easy,” Carlisle said of the always-difficult-to-time “clap” part in “Head Over Heels,” only to then watch numerous crowd members still mess up. “Well, it’s really easy for some of us.”

In all, Carlisle played four numbers from her former band — and they were the surely the four that the crowd was most hoping to hear.

The 65-year-old Los Angeles native, who has reportedly lived outside of the U.S. for roughly half her life and now calls Mexico City home, sounded good as she continued through “World Without You,” “Circle in the Sand,” “I Get Weak” and other longtime favorites.

Yet, she also scored high marks with the “Kismet” material, offering up a memorable version of “Big Big Love” early in the set and then following up a half-dozen tunes later with the stylish “If U Go.”

Backed by a solid four-piece band, Carlisle was really hitting her stride as she finished up the “Runaway Horses” track “Leave a Light On” and then charged right into her best solo hit – the dizzyingly romantic “Mad About You.”

The momentum carried over to, and even amped up with, the iconic Go-Go’s number “We Got the Beat,” as the crowd heeded Carlisle’s call for “everybody get on your feet.”

She then brought the hour-long main set to a close with a great version of the smash sing-along “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” before returning for a four-song encore highlighted by the back-to-back Go-Go’s classics “Vacation” and “Our Lips Are Sealed.”

Fans who missed the show — or who, quite understandably, simply want a second helping — can see Carlisle perform at August Hall in San Francisco on Sunday (Aug. 20). Showtime is 8 p.m. and tickets are $49.50, augusthallsf.com .

Essence, the wonderful Bay Area-based singer-songwriter, opened the show in Napa with a strong set of finely written and performed Americana/alt-country numbers.

She showcased her incredibly strong and versatile vocals time and time again during a generous one-hour showcase.

The Blue Note Summer Sessions continues through October with such shows as Madeleine Peyroux (Sunday, Aug. 20),  Gregory Porter (Sept. 15), NAPA/NOLA: A Day of New Orleans Music and Food (Sept. 23), Psychedelic Furs and Squeeze (Oct. 6) and Yes (Oct. 31). Puckish, punk spirit … Belinda Carlisle delivers a lean, focused set of timeless pop.

Belinda Carlisle review – heaven is a place in Wales

St David’s Hall, Cardiff Carlisle, sounding better than ever, unleashes her hits and pop treasures upon a suspecting audience

T here’s something in the way Belinda Carlisle moves that seems to distort time. As the final notes of Do You Feel Like I Feel? fade, she turns with a pirouette and a flick of her bare feet from beneath the spangliest of skirts. Suddenly, we’re no longer in South Wales while a rugby international day reaches its puke-and-chips phase, but in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, watching as the singer of the Go-Go’s brings puckish, punk spirit to glittering major-label pop.

This synapse-triggering muscle memory is key to Carlisle’s lean, focused set, which shines a light on solo work that has at times been enveloped by the shadow cast by her band, who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as recently as 2021. It’s an approach that’s welcomed with open arms. By the time the opening chord of (We Want) The Same Thing has been struck, the seated crowd is on its feet and, bar a few posterior-plantings during the night’s ballads, they stay there.

As befits an artist who has been releasing “best of” records for more than 30 years, Carlisle flies through a running order studded with singles, foregrounding both the melodic potency of her imperial phase and the relative paucity of options elsewhere. In footballing terms, she might not have the deepest bench but her starting side will give anyone a game.

Unsurprisingly, most of the evening’s songs come from prized solo albums Runaway Horses and Heaven on Earth , released a couple of years apart in the late 1980s. Carlisle crushes the opening “Take my hand…” of Leave a Light On , sending a surge of excitement through the audience. At each turn, her vocals are sharp and characterful, with her vibrato ticking over nicely and a pleasing raspiness added to the weepy Vision of You , a glossy confection that, all these years later, neatly splits the difference between Adele and Taylor Swift.

Carlisle plays the night’s one Go-Go’s song – Our Lips Are Sealed , introduced with a tribute to its late co-writer Terry Hall – in tandem with Mad About You , her first solo single. This is the only point when her band – two guitars, bass, drums and keys played with absolute competence by nondescript men in black – taps into the brittle hookiness of her new wave roots, imparting a welcome grit and allowing Carlisle to bounce into her higher register before pogoing off to one side.

From the outside there remains friction between Carlisle’s status as one of the pillars of Hollywood punk – she briefly played drums in a prototype line-up of the legendary hardcore band the Germs before the Go-Go’s broke out — and her later records, which studiously scrubbed any grime from the surface. But she doesn’t entertain it. Tonight she is all-in on Belinda Carlisle, solo artist. As the stage lighting explodes in the reds, blues, greens and yellows of a light-up dancefloor, the room raucously roars the chorus of Heaven Is a Place on Earth. They’re all in, too.

Review - Belinda Carlisle @ Napa's Meritage Resort (8/18/23)

belinda carlisle tour 2023 reviews

Belinda Carlisle dazzled a capacity crowd at Napa’s Meritage Resort Friday night with a concert that saw her in non-stop motion as she blended new songs and super hits of her past. Presented as part of the Blue Note Summer Sessions , Carlisle – who celebrated her birthday the day before - admitted that she had been leaning toward retirement when her son ran into songwriter extraordinaire Diane Warren and Warren demanded he get Carlisle on the phone with her. From that call, came the 2023 four-song EP, Kismet and Carlisle went back out on her extensive “Decades” tour.

Carlisle’s performance showed she’s not nearly ready to be put out to pasture and has much more in common with the “Runaway Horses” she sang about near the end of the show. Taking the stage to “(We Want) the Same thing” she was a whirling dervish of entertainment as arms flew and her feet rarely touched the ground as she spun and danced. Within seconds, she had cast her shoes aside and spent the rest of the night barefoot to go along with her sparkly long skirt and black turtleneck. Decades may indeed have passed since she was the official crush of millions of 80’s teenage boys, but Carlisle still has all the magic in her voice, smile and that unmistakable twinkle in her eyes. She went straight back to those days with The Go-Go’s “Head Over Heels” which got many in the front VIP sections up and dancing.

From there, Carlisle dug into her solo successes and it was interesting to note that when they are stacked next to each other, her solo triumphs far outnumber the hit songs that The Go-Go’s had as a collective. “Big Big Love” off the new EP was followed by “World Without You” – another Warren song from way back. “Does anyone remember 1987?” Carlisle asked before the song. “Because I don’t.” From there, mega-hits “I Get Weak” featuring a big guitar solo and “Circle in The Sand” followed. “Vision of You” a ballad that was the fifth single off “Runaway Horses” was next up and Carlisle referenced filming the video in Japan.

Carlisle introduced “Summer Rain” by sharing “This next song was a big hit all over the world – except here in the United States.” The song was a big romantic number with Carlisle taking advantage of the entirely open middle of the stage. Here supporting guitarist, drummer, keyboardist and bassist were positioned in the far corners of the stage throughout the concert and this enabled Carlisle to dance from one side to the other and constantly keep a connection with the audience. The night was warm and still, so the entirely outdoor venue was comfortable and engaged – no doubt helped by the large amount of Napa’s finest being enjoyed mostly by the bottles and carafes on attendees’ tables.

Carlisle introduced “If U Go” off the new EP as her first single to chart in a long time. The song leaned heavily on a cool synthesizer sound and was performed with an exuberance and energy that put it near the top of the evening. The big chorus had people heading to the sides of the venue to find room to dance. “Leave a Light On” – a song from “Runaway Horses” that was originally recorded with George Harrison playing lead guitar – was the first of seven straight big hits that Carlisle played to wrap up her show. “Mad About You” saw Carlisle once again dancing and tambourining across the stage as the audience continued to dance. “We Got the Beat” came next and now the entire audience was swinging and swaying to a very fast paced version. To end the regular set, Carlisle encouraged the audience to sing along to a slow, quiet opening of “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” The crowd’s vocal participation came up audibly shot with Carlisle remarking half-jokingly “That was a mess,” before the full band kicked in and set the song back on the right path.

Carlisle and her band returned to the stage for a fast version of “Runaway Horses” and then asked the audience “Hey. How about some Go-Go’s songs?” The band kicked into “Vacation” and a quick-paced “Our Lips Are Sealed.” Though some of the punk-era defiance may no longer hang in the songs, Carlisle seemed to not have aged a bit as she moved and sang with all the energy and enthusiasm she displayed in the 80’s. Carlisle introduced her last song as being words of good advice and sent the audience home with “Live Your Life Be Free.”

Opening the night, San Francisco-born Essence and her band brought a modern country set to the resort crowd. “My name is ‘Essence’ because my parents were hippies. My Dad was an artist in San Francisco and we went to a lot of concerts and festivals when I was younger.” Essence was supported by a strong backing band featuring David Phillips on pedal steel, Gary Kaye on banjo, Danny Uzilevsky on guitar and Joshua Zucker on standup bass. “Good Mom” stood out as the best song of the night (you should definitely check out her terrific YouTube Video). It was a hilarious romp through the typical difficulties of a mother’s day with kids. It had the crowd up, dancing and singing along with its chorus:

Essence performance was terrifically engaging with songs like “The Gamble” featuring outstanding slide guitar from Phillips and Essence demonstrating superior note-holding vocal abilities and “Love Like Ours” which she dedicated to her late father. “Turn Up the banjo!” she requested before performing “Steel River.” “There’s something you won’t hear often,” she added with a laugh. The crowd gave her a warm round of thank you applause after her supporting set.

CONCERT REVIEW: Belinda Carlisle starts tour in Atlanta with self assurance, spirit

A raft of singers in the 1980s left their bands and embarked on solo careers: Dennis DeYoung of Styx, Peter Cetera of Chicago and Steve Perry of Journey. Belinda Carlisle was one of the few women to make the leap, and she arguably had one of the most successful runs among her MTV-era peers.

Carlisle has over the years reunited with her original band the Go Go’s, taken a few forays outside of pop music ( French standards, anyone? ), and pondered almost retiring altogether .

But as she said on stage at The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheatre in Peachtree City Saturday night for the opening date of her latest summer solo tour, her son James Duke Mason ran into songwriter extraordinaire and her long-time collaborator Diane Warren and placed her on the phone with Carlisle. Warren persuaded Carlisle to record a few new pop ditties she had written, and the result was this spring’s five-song EP “Kismet.”

She performed two cuts from that EP Saturday that blended well with the rest of the set: the bright, airy “Big Big Love” and the retro cool ditty “If U Go.”

Over a span of 20 songs and 90 minutes, Carlisle covered all her notable solo hits, giving “Mad About You” a more guitar-heavy sound and opening her No. 1 1987 hit ‘Heaven is a Place on Earth” with a lovely acapella segment before going whole hog with the band.

Carlisle, 64, wearing a sparkly dress, black top and no shoes as is her wont, moved with a spirited carefree vigor as if it were still 1982. At one point, she appeared to have communication issues with her drummer, who signaled the start of a backing track of a song before she had a chance to finish on-stage banter. And during the bridge of “Mad About You,” she literally said, “I have a lot to say about this song but I won’t say” in part because the backing track dictated her to keep going.

Anybody who has seen Carlisle live over the years knows that she isn’t always pitch perfect. Saturday was no exception. But her voice sounded consistently strong throughout, whether she was tackling some of her cherished solo hits like “Circle in the Sand” and “I Get Weak,” or underrated delights like “Do You Feel Like I Feel?” and “Fool for Love.”

She also expressed pride that she got to collaborate with some of the biggest names in rock, including Lindsey Buckingham and George Harrison, who provided a nice slide guitar solo on the recording of her 1989 hit “Leave a Light On,” which was a definite highlight of the night live.

Carlisle started her set at 7:45 p.m., about 45 minutes earlier than originally scheduled because the weather report indicated rain after 10 p.m. She ironically performed what she said was her favorite solo song she ever recorded “Summer Rain,” which did well in several countries worldwide but stalled at No. 30 on the top 40 chart stateside.

The Go Go’s as a group have only played a handful of times in Atlanta over the past 30 years, including a private concert at Centennial Olympic Park in 2013, a visit to Chastain in 2011 , two stops at Center Stage in the mid-2000s and a pairing with the B-52s at Lakewood Amphitheatre in 2000. So fans had to make do with solo Carlisle last night giving love to that seminal band’s four biggest hits: “Head Over Heels,” “We Got the Beat,” “Vacation” and “Our Lips Are Sealed.”

Sure, the songs aren’t quite the same without her brethren Charlotte Caffey, Kathy Valentine, Gina Schock and Jane Wiedlin, but Carlisle and her band gave them all plenty of verve and power. The audience happily sang along.

We’ve got the windy city covered., belinda carlisle “got the beat” in north shore center pop comeback, plus the go-go’s greatest.

Belinda Carlisle

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Belinda Carlisle began as a defining vocal and visual personality of the 1980s into the ‘90s, initially fronting the groundbreaking pop/punk group The Go-Go’s, followed by a similarly stratospheric solo career.

Although the act may no longer be together, despite continued influence on countless ladies who came after (and tons of guys too, including Green Day), it was one of the many subjects on the fearless leader’s “Decades” Tour, which stopped by a packed North Shore Center For The Performing Arts in Skokie.

Belinda Carlisle

However, the headliner quickly erased the gap, along with her flawless 64-years, as she figuratively leaped off MTV with “(We Want) The Same Thing” into The Go-Go’s “Head Over Heels.”

The brand new “Big Big Love,” which reunites her with all-star songwriter Diane Warren, evoked shades of those days, yet was firmly planted in the now, plus the older “I Get Weak,” “Circle In The Sand” and “Leave A Light On” each came across fabulously fresh.

The mood reached sheer euphoria come “Mad About You” and continued climbing towards “Heaven Is A Place On Earth,” as Carlisle made the lyrics come to fruition while bouncing around the stage barefoot.

The encore gave the North Shore Center several more chances for a “Vacation” and eventually sent faithful home with the empowering mantra “Live Your Life Be Free,” further confirming all bets that Belinda’s still “Got The Beat.”

Sold out audience turn out to see Belinda Carlisle at Birmingham Symphony Hall

At the age of 64 and embarking on a 15 date 'Decades' tour in Birmingham on Friday night, Belinda Carlisle certainly showed no signs of slowing down.

belinda carlisle tour 2023 reviews

And a sold out Symphony Hall showed there is still a healthy appetite for pop nostalgia - in the former Go Go's singer's case she has been having solo hits since 1986.

That first single – Mad About You – went top 10 in the USA but was a prelude to the song that really launched her worldwide a year later, that being Heaven on Earth.

Both of course featured here, Heaven on Earth as the final song before two encores. A number of hits from that album, in fact nearly all of her singles, many that did better in the UK than the US were played including I Get Weak, Circle in the Sand, Summer Rain, Live Your Life be Free, Big Scary Animal and In Too Deep.

The crowd were on their feet from the first bars of opening number, (We Want) the same thing, and stayed there for around 90 minutes as the pop princess held them in the palm of her hands.

She also entertained between songs with bright chat, including listing some surprisingly big artists she has worked with including George Harrison. The song he played guitar on Deep Deep Ocean off the Runaway Horses album featured in the concert as well as album tracks so there was plenty for the super fans to enjoy

Carlisle also looks as beautiful as ever which might have something to do with the healthy lifestyle she is known for.

The rapport with her familiar four piece band is impressive as well as her voice which has held up over the years and it is to be hoped it does for some more as the audience lapped up hit after hit.

Earlier The Christians entertained in fine style, with their carefully crafted pop again bringing back memories for the mainly 40 plus audience.

They had five top 40 singles in the UK and their first album in 1987 sold over a million copies. Again lead singer Gary Christian's voice showed no sign of waning and it was great to see a band and musicians genuinely enjoying themselves on stage.

Belinda Carlisle is still on the go-go-go

The singer has returned from retirement with a new collection of anthemic pop and a us tour.

Belinda Carlisle's summer tour comes to Hyannis and Cohasset this weekend.

The band was hoping to get arrested.

When the Go-Go’s filmed the video for their 1982 hit “Our Lips Are Sealed,” the quintet, manically grinning in their thrift shop finery, capped the shoot by splashing in a fountain on Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards in Los Angeles. They did it hoping to get cuffed and hauled into police custody. Instead, they simply attracted a few curious stares and endeared themselves to their Gen X fans.

The tale of the “Our Lips Are Sealed” video tidily encapsulates the Go-Go’s and the band’s lead singer, Belinda Carlisle. The Go-Go’s were viewed as America’s sweethearts. Meanwhile, they were either drunk, coked up, or cranked on horse. Fans of the band know the story. It was the subject of everything from an episode of VH1′s “Behind the Music” to an acclaimed documentary.

The story, first of the Go-Go’s, and then of Belinda Carlisle’s years as a solo artist, appeared to be finished, ending with the band’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 — a neatly told tale of the trajectory from punk pioneers to revered pop priestesses.

That is until Carlisle decided to write an epilogue. This spring, she released “Kismet,” her first English-language collection since 1996′s “A Woman & a Man.”

“Kismet” was born of a chance encounter between her son, Duke Mason, and songwriter Diane Warren, who’d been responsible for Carlisle’s 1988 hit “I Get Weak.” Their reunion was magic. The first single from the five-song EP is “Big Big Love,” an anthemic pop song that harkens back to the slick, sing-to-the-rafters tunes that Carlisle perfected during her late 1980s and early 1990s salad days as a solo artist.

“I thought that I had pretty much done everything that I’d wanted to do in my career,” Carlisle says on the phone from her home in Mexico City. “I thought my days of doing mainstream pop music were over because great material goes to younger artists, or artists that are charting. I’m 64 and I haven’t had a hit since 1997.”

But Warren had a batch of songs for Carlisle that the singer “freaked out” about. Shortly thereafter she found herself back in the studio.

We chatted with Carlisle about her career longevity, the future of the Go-Go’s, and her die-hard European fan base. She performs Friday at the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis and Saturday at the South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset.

Q. Had you officially retired from music before “Kismet” came along?

A. There really wasn’t anything left for me to conquer. I’ve worked with some of the best songwriters in the world. I made some of the most iconic music out there. I was fine with it. These past couple of years were more about making up tour dates that had been postponed because of the pandemic. Then I was going to head into the mountains of Mexico and that’s it. Then, of course, it didn’t end up happening. I went to the studio to meet with [Diane Warren] more out of courtesy than anything else. I heard the songs, and I loved them. I was really surprised and humbled by the whole thing.

I think people can go on too long in this business. I’m very mindful of that. I’m quite happy that this is it, but I’m also not going to say never because I’ve said that too many times, and I’ve been proven wrong, so who knows?

Jane Wiedlin (left) and Belinda Carlisle perform with the Go-Go's.

Q. Did retiring from your solo career also mean that the Go-Go’s were done as well? The band has stopped and started so many times it’s hard to keep track.

A. Yes. It wasn’t a unanimous decision to end the Go-Go’s, but it was time. I’d been doing that for so long, plus balancing my solo music and my family. There are some very complicated dynamics in the Go-Go’s, and that’s how it’ll always be. Even if we’re not on great terms, we still love each other. It’s familial. More than half the band felt the same way I did. I think there’s something to be said for going out on top. That’s where I felt we were after we got into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Q. I don’t think a lot of people in the US are aware that your solo career has far eclipsed your fame with the Go-Go’s, particularly in Europe. I saw that you sold out the London Palladium earlier this year, and your setlist didn’t contain a single Go-Go’s song.

A. The Go-Go’s were known on a cult level outside of the States. My solo career is and always has been much, much bigger and more successful than the Go-Go’s. It’s different in the States where people know the band better, so I tailor my setlist depending on where I’m performing. At this point, switching gears between my songs and Go-Go’s songs feels pretty natural.

I just got off a UK tour that was sold out. The venues were about 3,000 to 5,000 capacity. But about 20 years ago I had such a fall from grace. I did a little UK tour and like 20 people showed up. I thought, “Oh my God, this is how it all ends.” I had a lot of issues going on at the time. But people still love these songs, and I have the privilege of singing them. I think there’s a real need for uplifting pop music

Q. It’s a tough question, but if you had to pick a favorite song from your discography, which would it be?

A. “Summer Rain” off of the “Runaway Horses” album. It’s my favorite song to sing live. In some countries there’s like a whole choreography and dance routine that the audience does to go along with it. I think the choreography started in Asia, or maybe Australia. But I love the string arrangement on the record. I like that it’s melancholy. I always gravitate to those songs.

Q. Will you teach the audience the “Summer Rain” choreography when you’re here?

A. If I can ever learn it, I’ll be happy to teach it.

Belinda Carlisle

Of all the things Belinda Carlisle has been mad about in recent years, her career as a pop solo artist has not been high up there, from all appearances. That changed with the May release of “Kismet,” a five-song EP that finally found Carlisle dipping a toe back into the recording studio with her first new collection of English-language pop music since 1996, including a single titled “Big Big Love,” which really did have the beat (as opposed to her last album, a mantra record).

In conversation with Variety over Zoom, Carlisle talked about pleasing her fan base with the new EP (her fanatical European devotees finally having something to obsess over besides the endless repackagings of her ’80s and ’90s material), where her wanderlust comes from, and the odds of a collab with near-namesake Brandi Carlile .

Did the title “Kismet” come up out of conversations between you and Diane Warren, about how the two of you got together for this? The story goes that your son, Duke, ran into her at a coffee shop and that’s how you reconnected after a period of decades.

I’ve always used that word, because I love the way that it conjures up mysticism, magic, things that can’t be explained, coincidences. So it’s always been part of my vocabulary.

Fast forward to about a year and a half ago, when my son ran into Diane at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and she said, “What is your mom doing? Let’s call her.” So they did, and she said, “Get down to the studio. I have hits for you.” And I thought, weeeell … I was planning on slowing down and retiring and living the quiet life. And I thought, do I really wanna make this commitment? But nobody says no to Diane. So I went down to the studio and she played me a couple tracks. And I’ve always been black or white. I know what I like; I have no confusion about that and never have. But I loved the song (“Big Big Love”), so I thought, OK, let’s do it. You know, I haven’t been in the studio and I haven’t done English-speaking pop for a long time. I did a few little projects here and there, but nothing like this since 1997.

“Big Love” is a song with some tempo to it. Some people expect, when you’re doing quote-unquote adult pop, that you’re gonna slow it down. So fans may be kind of happy to hear something that has some bounce to it.

They are. They seem to respond to the three up-tempos. They respond to “Big Big Love,” “If You Go” and “Insanity.” And the other two they like, too… I think I made my fans really happy with this EP.

You’ve said maybe you were ready to be semi-retired. At the same time, you’ve said that in the past 15 years, you’d really spent a lot of time on your voice, which doesn’t sound like someone who just wants to wind it down and get out.

Well, I’ve always done vocal lessons. But I also do a daily yoga practice, and I do a lot of pranayama. And then when I started getting into breath work — and I do Wim Hof- type stuff too, which is like the ice bath with the heavy breathing — I noticed that my voice changed completely, as far as what I was able to do: better voice control, more lung capacity. That really inspired me to even do more of it and to really take it seriously. So usually for a month before I go and do a run of dates, I do it every day. I do vocal lessons and breath work every single day anyway, but I do heavier breath work. I know that as you get older, you sort of lose control of your voice, and older singers sometimes can’t sing anymore. That hasn’t happened yet. And I think it’s actually stronger than it was.

You certainly have not been reclusive since your last solo pop album in 1997. There’s a long list of things, everything from being on “Dancing with the Stars”…

Uhhh. Yeah…

Not a happy memory…

But then you’ve had lots of other things you were more in control of — your memoir, intermittent Go-Go’s reunion tours, your French album, your spiritual album. So it’s not like you disappeared off the face of the earth or anything. But in terms of making pop solo albums… a lot of people who are in your position continue to make albums just to make albums.

I won’t do that. I actually said after my mantra album that I really didn’t think that I’d be doing another another English-speaking pop album, with original material. Because most of the great songs go to younger artists or to artists that are already in the charts. So that’s why this whole thing was kind of a surprise to me, because Diane could have easily given it to somebody else who was… I was gonna say “20 years younger,” but… 40 years younger. [Laughs.]

So was there a real shift as a result of doing this EP where you feel like being more active in the studio arena again, and/or more touring?

To be honest, I don’t know. There’s no plans to go back in the studio, at this point. I do have another project that I started before the pandemic, but it’s different from this one. But I don’t know. The touring thing… Touring is hard, and it’s not like it used to be. No matter what class you go, five-star or two-star, it’s still physically challenging. But I don’t know. I’ll just take it as it comes and see what happens.

When you refer to the pre-pandemic project, wasn’t that an album of California-related covers, songs from when you were growing up?

Yes, that’s the other project. I probably will finish that up next year — probably — and we’ll see what happens with that.

You’ve talked about how you were judged a lot on your appearance back in the Go-Go’s days. It seems like it could be challenging because, even when people are telling you how great you look now, there can be an undertone to “compared to how you looked before,” which undercuts the compliment. To the extent that you haven’t worked constantly like some of your contemporaries do, and you have some reluctance about it, is there an ambivalence that’s part of that where you associate the work with being judged or evaluated in some way that goes beyond music?

So, I’ve always been really sensitive. I don’t have thick skin. And social media is great, but it can be really toxic too. I just try not to read anything about myself now. And I have my own Instagram page that I set up, but … It is weird. I don’t think it impacts whether I’m gonna continue or not. I think that depends on how fun things are. But as a woman who’s done this for over 40 years … well, how do I put this? You’re treated differently in the press than a man is, for sure.

We were always wondering how the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was going to treat the Go-Go’s. It finally happened two years ago, as part of this kind of valedictory lap that involved everything from getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to having the musical “Head Over Heels” go to Broadway to the documentary — and then, finally, the induction. But in talking with you prior to that, it seemed like it mattered less to you to than for some of the other members. But when it happens, you’re gonna take it…

Actually, it was one of the most amazing nights of my life. But I was kind of over caring about it, and really, if it hadn’t been for the documentary, we might still be waiting. Or not waiting; you know, just forgetting about it. But when you actually get the phone call that you’re gonna be inducted, it’s like, “Wow, this is great.” You change your mind.

You do think the documentary made all the difference?

Yeah, it was like, they can’t ignore us anymore — it would be ridiculous. I think people that were into that genre knew the story. But most people, especially now, they assume that you come from a TV show or you’re put together by some Svengali, like a Simon Cowell. I think Alison Ellwood captured the essence of the band in that documentary, and that was a difficult thing. Besides telling a great story, it was a charming story, too.

You’ve had some great shows or tours in recent years, including locally playing with an orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl in 2018 and doing Crypto.com Arena in 2022. But you’ve come out and said you think the Go-Go’s are done ?

It’s done. It has to be done at some point, you know. I think bands can go on too long, and without naming names, there are a few. And singers as well. I always tell my manager, “I hope you’re gonna tell me when it’s time.” I don’t think that he’s gonna have to, because I probably will have pretty much felt like it’s time for me. I think I have a good sense of that. But, I mean, we did it all. I think that the Rock Hall induction was a really wonderful way to cement the legacy of the band. There’s something to be said for leaving at the top.

You’ve said you had some kind of television treatment of your life in the works, although probably not immediately?

One reason a mini-series like that could have potential is that you are intriguing as someone who’s kind of been more than one person in your life. The Alison Ellwood documentary did such a good job of establishing that back in the day, when you’re crashing in the house with all these people and hanging out with Darby Crash, you’re kind of the quintessential punk-rock girl. There’s the pop success, and after that, people have this very glamorous image of you, as your image changes with your solo career. Then years later you’re doing a mantra album and practicing Buddhism and living in Thailand — a life that maybe seems esoteric compared to what peoiple remember from the ‘80s. Then there’s the journey to sobriety you’ve had. It may be inspirational or aspirational for fans to look at someone like you and go, OK, here’s someone who really has changed her life at various points.

Well, for some reason, I was born without the fear chip. I do have a chip missing when it comes to that. And I was also born a contrarian.

I think that all the changes and everything that I’ve done in my career has really been a very honest sort of representation of where I was at in my life. With my solo album, I went from the Go-Go’s, I became a young woman, I lost weight, and I was going back to sort of being influenced by the music that I grew up with on Southern California radio. Then, living in France for so long and speaking French, I got really into French pop, and I always felt like I had a chanteuse side, so why not do that? And then of course, I chant every day …

I mean, I think it was just that I was kind of born without fear. And I don’t know why that is, because I grew up in a super-Christian family where everybody played their traditional role, and there’s a lot to be afraid of. So I’m lucky in that way.

All grist for the mini-series… if it happens?

Yeah, every episode a different persona.

There’s been a seeming stability there, in the form of your marriage, for as many changes as you’ve made.

I’ve been really lucky that we’ve lived together for 38 years, and married for 36, 37, something like that. I’m really lucky that we’ve always had that sort of foundation for both of us to do our thing. Of course, like with any relationship that goes on that long, there are ups and downs and challenges that come along. But I’m so glad we stuck it through, because it’s better than ever now. And now we’re at a time in our life where we spend a lot of time together. And yeah, I think that helps we with my stability. Like I said earlier, I have a daily practice too that definitely helps with that too and centers me. I do feel more centered than I’ve ever been, but that’s also taken a lot of work.

You’re speaking with us from home in Mexico City, which you’ve called “the most exciting city in the world.” Why is that?

Good, good art, good food, lots of culture, so many things to do. In the city, Sundays is bike riding — the whole city closes down. It reminds me a lot of New York in the early ‘80s and late ‘70s; it has that kind of buzz. It’s beautiful. You know, we’ve lived over out of the country since 1994. We tried coming back, and it was impossible, because it was the curse of the expat —nowhere is really home. We always loved Mexico, so we thought, well, let’s try Mexico City, because we’re gypsies. And it’s amazing. I think this is it. I’m 64 now, so I can’t see doing an international move again. We’ve done it plenty of times.

Actually, if it wasn’t for the pandemic, we might still be in Thailand. That was one of the very few good things that came out of the pandemic. It just got too weird there, and we were stuck in the country for a year and a half and we couldn’t really get out. And my dad died; we hadn’t seen our son for a year and a half. We just thought, this is crazy — this could go on — so maybe it’s time to go to Mexico. We left in a hurry because there were less and less flights arriving and leaving. We had the movers pack up our staff and, long story short, here we are.

Whatever the opposite of xenophobic is, that’s you. In interviews, you might be talking about how you want to go to Bolivia, and how India’s your favorite place to go in the world.

I just got back from southeastern Turkey, near Iran and Syria, and there were so many archeological things that I wanted to see. It’s considered a red zone, and you’re not supposed to go there… it’s dangerous. But we had no problem. I have a friend that I plan a crazy trip with every year. We didn’t during the pandemic, obviously, but we did the Silk Road and all the stans — we’re doing Pakistan next year. I eat it up. And when I’m not traveling and working, I’m an armchair traveler. I read classic travel books like Freya Stark or Martha Gilhorne. For whatever reason, I guess I was sort of born with that gypsy spirit.

Where does that come from, do you know?

I’m fascinated by different cultures around the world, and ever since I was a little girl I have been.  My parents would get National Geographic and I would just eat it up. And then I thought, “I want to be a travel agent so I can see the world.” And then when the Runaways happened, I thought, well, being in a band is probably a much better way to see the world.

For some people who toured as much as you have, they think, OK, I did enough traveling for one lifetime.

I don’t mind it because it used to be that I’d go to all these places and I didn’t have a day off to actually see what was around me. So now I make sure that I have time to actually learn about where I am. Even with American cities, it’s the same thing. I still love it. Traveling isn’t as fun as it used to be, as we all know — it’s a big drag — but when you get there, it’s great, wherever you’re going.

One last question. You met Brandi Carlile once at an event and posed for a picture, and people loved that just because of the name thing. The other day, somebody wrote on Brandi’s Twitter timeline, “Why don’t you do a duet with Belinda Carlisle?” She emphatically responded, “Make it happen.” Could you see that happening, as a lark, someday?

Why not? I think she’s great. We both had a big laugh meeting each other, because people confuse both of us — I mean, all the time, still. Which is probably annoying to her and annoying to me at times, too, and funny at times as well. But I’m a huge fan of hers. And I would love it; if something appropriate came up, I would be totally into it.

One of my absolute favourite live acts.

Belinda always puts on an amazing show.

The set lists are fantastic and so many hits. The runaway anniversary tour was great from start to finish.

Lost count of how many times I’ve seen Belinda live but will definitely be going again for as long as she tours

Fantastic concert last night

Fan of Belinda since I saw her on the Eurochart top 50 on Sky channel presented by Pat Sharp in 1988.

Waited thirty years to see her playing. Every track was sung along to and I knew the words to all!

Cannot believe she is 61 years old. She looks and performed like a 31 year old

Out of 10, I would rate it 11. I speak for everyone there last night

Hope it isn’t another 20 years before she plays in Dublin

Belinda...you are a legend

Belinda was as amazing as ever, it's just a shame that many of the venues don't lend themselves to the get up and dance feeling of her songs.

This was the same with the Barbican. How can you sit in you seat when she is singing Live Your Life Be Free?

We got up numerous times only for the miserable moans of people behind.

For god sake people this a music concert with one of the icons of pop.

Enjoy yourselves!

A message from Belinda…

I am incredibly disappointed to announce that I have to postpone my upcoming Australian tour, again! I was so looking forward to finally being able to play these shows for you, especially after having had to reschedule them before because of covid, I’m devastated not to be able to come.

A couple of weeks ago I was diagnosed with a severe injury to my left knee, which was then made even worse by an infection. I’ve tried all sorts of therapies to give me a short term fix, but nothing has worked and now I have to have surgery to clean it out. It’s severely incapacitating, the pain makes it very hard to walk or even just stand for any extended period of time and my orthopaedic doctor has advised me I run the risk of doing long term damage if I don’t take care of it properly.

I’m unbelievably sad and I feel like I’ve let everyone down. I really hope you can all forgive me as this was totally out of my hands and there is nothing I can do except reschedule to September next year. I’d really love to come sooner but if it turns out I need major surgery on my knee I could be out of action for quite a while.

I hope to see you all in September 2024.

Belinda Carlisle was undoubtedly the right singer for these songs.
