Schengen States: what types of the Schengen visa can foreigners get

  • Schengen Visa Types

How long is the Schengen visa valid?

Schengen visas have a limited validity period, which depends on the trip’s purpose and the visa category itself. The Schengen states issue short- and long-stay visas.

A short-stay visa is issued to a foreigner for the first trip to one of the countries of the agreement. A long-stay visa can be issued to those who have visited Schengen several times and have not violated visa requirements. But the decision is always made by the embassy of the country where the applicant applies.

If a Schengen visa is issued for up to 5 years, this does not indicate the possibility of staying in the Schengen states for all 5 years. The validity period of a visa and the length of stay in countries are different concepts.

The duration of stay in the Schengen Area also depends on the visa type ― up to a maximum of 90 days every 180 days. For example, if a visa is issued for five years, a foreigner can enter the region as many times as they want. The main thing is not to stay in the Schengen Area for more than 90 days within 180 days.

To avoid confusion about validity terms and stay terms, we are presenting the Schengen visa types in the table below.

A Schengen visa is pasted into a foreign passport and is often called a visa sticker. The visa has a special hologram, which is forgery protection.

The sticker contains information about the owner and the country that issued the visa. The visa validity area, validity period, duration of stay, and purpose of the visit must be specified.

Types of the Schengen visa: Visa sticker

A visa is required for all citizens of countries not part of the Schengen Area. There are exceptions: citizens of countries with which an agreement on visa-free entry to the Schengen Area was signed. For example, countries like Cyprus, Grenada, and Dominica.

Foreigners receive a visa at the embassies and consulates of the member states of the Schengen agreement. If the applicant plans to visit more than one country, it is recommended to submit documents to the representative office of the Schengen state where they will spend the most time.

With a Schengen visa, you can travel to Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The visa also allows you to visit countries that are:

  • candidates to join the European Union — Albania, Romania, Macedonia, Cyprus, and Bulgaria.
  • de facto belong to the Schengen Area due to the peculiarities of their location ― Andorra, Monaco, Vatican City and San Marino.

However, if a foreigner is travelling with a single-entry visa, they will not be able to use it to return to the territory of a Schengen Area state.

Visa for visiting Schengen Area states

Three types of the Schengen visa depending on the purpose of your trip:

  • Uniform Schengen visa (USV);
  • Limited territorial visa (LTV);
  • National visa.

A visa type depends on the visit’s purpose and the stay’s duration. All types are indicated by the letters: A, C, and D .

Type A visa ― transit, Type C ― short-stay, allows you to stay in the Schengen states for up to 90 days within six months. Type D visa is a national visa issued for a longer stay in a Schengen country, for example, to study.

Validity periods of the visa are limited and depend on the purpose of the trip and the category. For example, a transit visa is issued for up to 2 days. The maximum validity period of a Schengen visa is 5 years. Specialists of the embassy and consulate decide on the deadline.

The duration of stay in the Schengen states is limited : foreigners can stay in the agreement countries for up to 90 days every 180 days. You will need to obtain a national Type D visa for a longer stay.

“A visa sticker” is a Schengen visa’s second name. The visa itself is pasted into the passport. Each sticker contains a unique hologram that confirms the authenticity of the visa.

The sticker must contain information about the owner and the country that issued the visa. The details are the country and city of issuance, visa validity area, validity period and duration of stay, as well as the purpose of the visit.

The visa is issued to citizens from countries outside the Schengen Area.

There are exceptions for the countries that have signed an agreement on visa-free entry with the Schengen Area. Citizens of these countries do not need to obtain a Schengen visa, for instance, Cypriots, Grenadians or Montenegrins.

Foreigners apply for a visa at the consulate of one of the Schengen states. Documents are submitted to the country’s consulate, where the longest stay is planned during the first trip.

1. VAT4.1 What are the requirements

Immigration Rules for child visitors ( Paragraph 46A-F )

Children being sponsored through charities for short term stays in the UK should be treated as Child Visitors to the UK (see section of child visitors) and subject to the requirements of paragraph 46A of HC395 as amended - which requires that suitable arrangements be made for the child’s reception and care in the United Kingdom.

  • All children over the age of five must provide biometric details at the time of making an application.
  • Visa application forms should be completed in full, including a record of the name, address (not a PO Box number) and landline telephone number (where one exists) of the parent or carer in the child’s home country.
  • A letter from the parent or guardian confirming their relationship to the child and consenting to the child’s application should be presented.
  • Schooling details in the child’s home country.
  • A letter from the school if the child is travelling during school term time.

Charities should include in the visa application form:

  • Full details of the hosts allocated to accommodate the children whilst in the UK.
  • Full details of checks carried out on the hosts. These checks must be in line with the charity’s own child protection policy and any Charities Commission or Devolved Authority requirements, such as CRB checks.
  • State whether this is the first or a subsequent visit sponsored by the charity for the child.

ECOs must be satisfied that appropriate checks have been carried out by the charity prior to a visa application being submitted. As a guide, at the time of application any CRB checks should be no more than three years old.

Charities may only change host families allocated to children, and as stated on the visa application form, in exceptional circumstances. Full details of the new host family and the checks (as set out above) carried out on them must be presented.

Where children are not residing with host-families (for example in cases where they may be residing in residential centres), charities should provide full details of the arrangements.

Where a child’s visit exceeds 28 days, under child foster care arrangements the host family is required to present evidence to satisfy the ECO that they have contacted their local Social Services for a home assessment. Where a home assessment has been completed and approved, evidence of this should be provided.

Where a council declines to carry out such an assessment, their response and any relevant evidence to demonstrate that suitable arrangements have been made for the child’s stay in the UK should be presented.

ECOs should only issue visas when they are satisfied that children will be adequately accommodated and duty of care obligations have been met.

2. VAT4.2 How charities register their details

Charities facilitating child visits to stay with UK host families should be encouraged to register their details with the Embassy on the charity registration pro-forma below prior to submitting applications on the child’s behalf.

Child visitor charity registration form can be downloaded from this guidance page.

Charity Registration details to include:

  • the Charity Commission registration number*,
  • list of trustees,
  • charity details in both the UK and home country,
  • charity’s child protection policy,
  • outline of the selection process for inclusion of children in scheme,
  • details of host families including their CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checks and
  • assessment of suitability.

*To note: If a charity’s income does not reach the threshold of £5,000 per annum it does not need to register with the Charities Commission under the Charities Act 2006.

Charities should notify posts of any amendments to their registration details, which should be recorded accordingly. It is recommended that charities re-register and provide up-to-date details every 12 months

3. VAT4.3 When is the visa valid for travel?

Where children are sponsored to travel to the UK through charities, ECOs should limit the entry clearance to a single entry visit visa valid for six months - for more information see VAT01 Visitors: general for visa validity.

4. VAT4.4 What is the visa endorsement for an accompanied child?

Where a child is travelling in the company of the group leader(s) the ‘Child Accompanied’ endorsement should be used and their details should be identified on the child’s visa vignette:

C: VISIT CHILD ACCOMPANIED LTE 6 MONTHS, CODE 3. Only valid if accompanied by [adult’s passport number and first name initial and full surname] or [adult’s passport number and first name initial, and full surname] (space allowing).

If the child sponsored by a charity is travelling to the UK with one adult:

C: VISIT CHILD ACCOMPANIED LTE 6 MONTHS, CODE 3. Only valid if accompanied by [enter the accompanying adult’s passport number, first name initial, and full surname] (space allowing).

5. VAT4.5 What is the visa endorsement for an unaccompanied child?

Where a child is travelling unaccompanied, the ‘Child Unaccompanied’ endorsement should be used. The ECO should pay particular attention to the applications and circumstances of a child - recording full details on Proviso of the host in the UK.

C: VISIT CHILD UNACCOMPANIED LTE 6 MONTHS, CODE 3

Child Visit Visa Issued

Discussion in ' UK Visa and Immigration Help ' started by joyclarke , Nov 8, 2013 .

I have mixed emotions as I have received an email from my best friend with my kids visas attached. I was so excited because finally I can now finalise their travel arrangements and then I noticed that there is/are annotations on the visa and to my dismay, they have categorised it as C-Visit Child Accompanied and is only valid if either myself or my husband accompanies them i.e. pick them up in the Phils, and then take them back to the Philippines. I know I should be jumping for joy but the thought of spending thousands of pounds for my airfare just to pick them up and then take them back will make a huge dent on our budget! I mean it's alright if you got loads of cash hanging around, a husband with disability, two young kids and oh yeah a business to manage. My husband and I run a small housing association for the disabled, homeless and elderly and it does take up a lot of our time. I clearly emphasised these situations on my letter to the embassy and also to DSWD who has by the way understood our scenario hence they have issued a 2 year travel clearance. My kids are 11 and 13, and we have inquired with Emirates Airlines about their Unaccompanied Minor Service and they said you are not the first and you won't be the last, and they do it on regular occasion. I am just blown that I have to spend thousands of pounds, I mean I am not putting any price but the money that we would spend on my airfare could be put on better use. I rang UKBA who was very helpful and they said that although the condition of their visa states that it is only valid if accompanied by me or my husband, we are expected to accompany them but it is not mandatory. It is the discretion of the receiving port whether they would allow it or not and also the airlines. I didn't want to take any risk so my husband rang emirates who was also very helpful and said they are surprised that the UK Embassy made a remark as Accompanied when their situation is not isolated and they accompany minor children who are even younger than my 2 kids as long as they are not 5 years old and below. Emirates then reserved their seats for Dec 15 and requested us to send an email detailing their visas, passport and their contact person. They are going to have words with the Manager of UKBA in Manchester Airport and I am hoping that they allow them to fly without me or my husband. If approved, they will put this in writing and inform the relevant authorities as we don't want to take any chances, as my middle name is complicated. I just would like to share this story as I know that my story won't be an isolated case and hopefully UKBA allows them to travel on their own. I don't have that huge money to fork out for my airfare and hopefully this time they can see it from my side.

Hi! If you don't mind can you share the outcome of your predicament? I have a similar problem now. My 12 year old daughter and her 14 year old cousin will be travelling to the UK this summer to spend time with their aunt. I specifically mentioned in the application form that the two kids will be travelling unaccompanied to the UK (even mentioned our intention to enroll them in the Unaccompanied Minor Program of Singapore Airlines) and will be met in the UK by their aunt - who will be flying to the UK earlier in April. Even their DSWD Travel Clearances state categorically that they will be travelling alone. I got their visas today and the notation they put there was: C-Visit-Child Accompanied (only valid if acc by MVC Sulit) - which is my sister in law who will already be in London weeks before! My problem now is this - SQ has told me that the kids will not be able to leave the country on their own because of that notation on their visas. We tried to chat with the visa help website but they were not very helpful. Their suggestion was to just cancel the visa and apply again - this after 15 working days of waiting for the visa to be issued! Then they told us to just consult a solicitor if we wanted to insist on ammending the visa. There is no way to contact the British Embassy - even VFS Global couldn't help us. I would appreciate if anyone can enlighten us on what we can do. Definitely we dont want to cancel the visa and apply again - the time and money wasted. We need to purchase the airline tickets soon also. Thanks!
