Does the Yeti Rambler Deserve All the Love It Gets?

Consumer Reports tested this insanely popular travel mug to see if it lives up to the hype

Yeti Rambler travel mug in black and silver

It feels like there are only two kinds of coffee drinkers left in America: Those who love their Yeti Ramblers, and those who are tired of hearing about how much people love their Yeti Ramblers. Something about this travel mug seems to transform even the most casual users into instant brand ambassadors.

In fact, the mug is such a hit that it now accounts for about two-thirds of Yeti’s sales, far surpassing its sales of premium coolers—the product that made Yeti a household name.

While there’s no industry data tracking the best-selling travel mugs, it’s clear that Yeti is heading for world domination: “The Yeti Rambler is one of the most widely searched-for mugs online,” says Nish Suvarnakar, CR’s market analyst for the category. It’s also the top-selling tumbler on Amazon, where it has over 91,000 reviews. Yep, that’s three zeros.

The Rambler has 4.8 out of 5 stars on Amazon, with a review section loaded with fawning fans who describe their Ramblers as “incredible,” “worth every penny,” and “the perfect mug for a coffee snob!”

All this begs the question: What, exactly, is so amazing about the Yeti Rambler? To find out, we did what we do best. We tested it. We also tested nine other mugs from brands like Contigo, Starbucks, and Thermos. How did the Rambler stack up against its competitors? Read on to find out. For more on the travel mugs in our tests, see our ratings of insulated travel mugs .

Yeti Rambler Vitals

The Rambler is a hefty-feeling stainless steel mug, sold in about a dozen shapes and in capacities ranging from 10 to 30 ounces, for $12 to $35. We tested the 20-ounce Rambler, which is available in about 20 colors. You can add monogramming, custom words, or logos. The Rambler comes with a five-year warranty. Buy at:   Ace Hardware ,  Amazon ,  Dick’s Sporting Goods ,  Lowe’s ,  Yeti

How the Yeti Rambler Fared in CR's Tests

Temperature Performance Perhaps the boldest claim Yeti makes for the Rambler is that it has vacuum insulation, “to protect your hot or cold beverages at all costs.” When CR’s test engineer Bernie Deitrick filled the Rambler with water heated to the temperature of freshly brewed coffee, he found that the Rambler kept liquids hot for 4½ hours.

“That might be plenty for most users, and enough to earn a rating of Very Good in our test, but it was far from the best,” Deitrick says. “We found eight other mugs that performed better than the Rambler, including a Zojirushi which kept water hot for 13½ hours, which is about three times as long as the Yeti.” Almost 14 hours is probably overkill for most coffee drinkers, and frankly, the 4½ hours you’ll get from the Rambler might be, too, but it’s also clear that the Rambler is far from the front of the pack.

Leaking and Spilling The Rambler isn’t a leakproof mug, but to be fair, it isn’t designed to be. The perimeter of the Rambler’s lid is wrapped with a rubber gasket, and the lid sits snugly atop a lip inside the mug. That precision fit keeps coffee from splashing, say, if you go over a speed bump while driving, and it slows any leaks if the mug is knocked onto its side, giving you the chance to turn the mug right side up before your coffee leaks all over the floor. Its simple magnetic opening mechanism allows you to sip easily, then close the latch.

Yeti makes clear that the Rambler isn’t leakproof, but we think it could fairly be called leak-resistant. For a lot of users, the Rambler’s design probably hits the sweet spot between easy sipping and a basic level of protection against the worst leaks. In our tests we found that things like extra latches, which help make a mug leakproof, also happen to make them a little more annoying to use—after all, it’s a pain to have to press a button or pop a cap up every time you take a sip of coffee.

Everyday Use and Cleaning It’s hard to find a mug that’s skinny enough to fit in a regular car cup holder but still easy to clean by hand. But the Rambler fits that bill.

That’s because it’s skinny where it needs to be. The Rambler’s tapered shape is slimmer at the base and wider at the top; it fit easily into the cup holders of four cars in our test—everything from a Toyota Prius to a Honda Pilot. And it was one of only two mugs that was a cinch to clean by hand—the others required a bottle brush.

The Rambler also has a design with almost no crevices, which limits the places coffee can linger—the mug didn’t hold on to nasty odors, even after we let coffee and cream sit in the mug and lid for 48 hours before washing.

The top of the mug has a rolled lip, so it’s comfortable to drink even without the lid in place. If you ever break or lose the lid, you can buy a replacement from Yeti for $10. And if you happen to lose or break the magnetic latch on the lid, you can buy just that piece for $3. Some manufacturers don’t offer replacement lids, or replacement parts at all, so you’d have to buy a whole new mug if something breaks.

The Bottom Line

To understand what makes the Yeti Rambler so special, you have to understand where other mugs fall short. Too many mugs feel like they’re designed with engineers in mind, not casual coffee drinkers. They’re built to be beautiful, or to keep coffee hot at all costs, often resulting in designs that make the mugs downright annoying to drink from or clean.

In many ways, the Rambler feels like it was custom-made just for you. Every mug makes some trade-off in performance to improve convenience, or vice versa. The Yeti Rambler seems to nail those trade-offs.

It doesn’t keep coffee as hot as most other mugs, but it still keeps it hot for 4½ hours, which is plenty for most commutes. It isn’t leakproof or spillproof, but it’s heavy and sits firmly on a surface, plus it boasts a spill-resistant lid, all of which reduce the likelihood you’ll suffer a serious spill. That lid is also exceptionally easy to clean, not to mention easy to drink from. The 20-ounce Rambler also manages to be slender enough to fit in every cupholder we’ve tried, plus it can be cleaned by hand with a sponge.

Given all that, it’s easy to see why the Yeti Rambler has such devotees. It’s not the mug you’d want to take to the top of Mount Everest, but it could be just what you need for your commute.

Yeti Rambler 20 oz Review: A Great Travel Mug

Yeti Rambler 20 oz Review: A Great Travel Mug

While the market is full of vacuum-insulated vessels, the YETI Rambler 20 oz offers standout properties that set it apart from the rest.

YETI is best known for its coolers. As you can see, the company calls Rambler Tumblers “personal drink coolers.” Made from an 18/8 stainless steel with vacuum-insulated walls, the YETI Rambler 20 oz regulates ambient liquid temperatures inside. The lid is made from BPA-free plastic that snaps onto the 20 oz or 30 oz version of the cup. You can also use the snap-on lid with the Rambler Lowball, a mini version of the cup we’ve grown to love.

A Little About YETI

In 2006 YETI Coolers was founded with a simple mission: To build the cooler you’d use every day if it existed. It would be one that was built for the serious outdoor enthusiast rather than for the mass-discount retailers. It could take the abuse we knew you’d put it through on camping trips and on the water.

The goal was to make a cooler that simply wouldn’t break. They decided early on that product innovation would come from necessity and firsthand experience — not from market research and data analysis. And they’d never sacrifice quality for a few extra bucks. Because having your cooler’s lid cave in when using it as a casting platform should never be part of anyone’s fishing trip.

Today it is the cooler of choice for outdoor enthusiasts, pros, tailgaters, and backyard barbecue kings. And that still gets us fired up. Ultimately, life is about having a good time doing what you love. And for the folks at YETI, that’s being outdoors hunting whitetail, catching a tarpon on the fly, and spending time with families and buddies. They’re wild at heart. So their coolers couldn’t be anything less.

YETI Rambler 20 oz Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler Features & Benefits

YETI Rambler 20 oz Stainless Steel

Don't you hate it when your favorite beverage loses its frosty (or piping hot) goodness before you have a chance to fully enjoy it? We sure do, and that's why we love YETI’s over-engineered our Rambler Tumblers with kitchen-grade 18/8 stainless steel and double-wall vacuum insulation.

The result is a tough, hard-wearing personal drink cooler that maintains ice twice as long as plastic tumblers – and it works just as well for hot beverages. The lid that keeps your liquid in its place is easy to clean, shatter-resistant and crystal clear so you know exactly how much of your drink you still have to look forward to. It’s dishwasher safe too.

20 oz Tumbler

With the Rambler 20 oz. Tumbler, your beverages will stay ice cold or piping hot longer. They over-engineered these double-wall insulated tumblers with an 18/8 stainless steel body, which means your drink still keeps its temperature no matter how much of a beating this cup takes. They’re BPA-free (obviously), have a no sweat design to make sure your hands stay dry and the design is dishwasher-safe. Plus its crystal-clear lid lets you check your drink status in a flash. Refill, anyone?

18/8 Stainless Steel

The stainless steel on-the-go cup solution. Kitchen-grade, durable, and rust-proof material that lasts a lifetime.

Double-Wall Vacuum Insulation

The insulation keeps your drink as cold as science allows. It also keeps hot drinks hot.

No Sweat Design

The no sweat design makes for a secure grip with no condensation. Keeps fingers dry and you won't need a coaster.

The lid is dishwasher-safe and shatter-resistant. Construction is heavy duty. The lid’s suction is so effective that you can pick it up by the lid and it doesn’t come off of your cup. All in all, this is a great purchase. The only thing that we would have you keep in mind is that it’s perfect for cold weather, as hot beverages take a very long time to cool down inside the mug.

The Rambler Series

YETI Rambler 20 oz - Rambler Series

And, yeah, they over-engineered these YETI Tumblers to be virtually indestructible and keep your drink as cold (or hot) as science allows. With 18/8 stainless steel construction, double-wall vacuum insulation, and a no sweat design, they’re perfect for the deer lease, cleaning table, or just the times in between your outdoor adventures.

We Tested It Out

YETI Rambler 20 oz - Tested It Out

We had to see for ourselves if the YETI Rambler 20 oz was as good as the reviews said. And we’ve got to say – we were pleasantly surprised with what we found. The perfect on the go cup is one that can hold both hot and cold liquids and keep them at their desired temperatures. We took the rambler out for its first test, coffee.

The Hot Coffee Test

If you’re anything like us, you drink way too much coffee in the morning – about three cups to be exact. During cold winters, nothing is better than pouring your coffee into a travel mug and having something warm and caffeinated to accompany you on your way to work. Want to know the best part about using the YETI Rambler 20 oz? You won’t have to reheat your coffee. If anything, your coffee will probably be too hot by the time you get to work. This mug seriously delivers when it claims to hold temperatures.

The Cold Drink Test

Do you also pour a drink and then forget about it when you’re doing something around the house? We’ve always thought of ourselves as multi-taskers but maybe this is the area where we fail. You come back and your drink is all warm. But hey, don’t worry too much. The YETI Rambler 20 oz has solved this problem for the both of us. How? It actually keeps cold drinks cold. Walk away and forget about it for hours. It won’t matter. When you come back, your drink will be just as cold as when you first poured it. Magic.

Minor Flaws

The only minor flaw we noticed in the YETI Rambler 20 oz is the design of the lid. It spilled a few times while we sipped; some sort of closing mechanism would be helpful. If you’re taking this tumbler along on a road trip just don’t fill your cup to the bring and you should be fine. Avoid the sloshing around.

What Travelers Are Saying About the YETI Rambler 20 oz Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler

At the time of writing, the YETI Rambler 20 0z Tumbler has over 5,300 reviews on Amazon with a four and a half out of five-star rating. This is such a great cup for when you’re on the go. Fill up some hot coffee in the morning or bring something cold with you on a hot summer’s day. Overall, travelers absolutely love this Tumbler. As far as the coffee temperature maintaining capabilities, we were impressed.

Other Options

While the YETI Rambler 20 oz is the perfect size for an on the go drink, YETI also offers the rambler in two other sizes that really come in handy. Check out these tumblers.

10 oz Lowball

The Rambler 10 oz. Lowball is the ideal drinking companion at the deer lease or around the campfire. Whether it replaces your morning coffee cup or serves as your nightly whiskey glass, the Lowball's double-wall vacuum insulation will keep your hot drinks hot and your cold drinks cold far longer than standard drinkware. And unlike your favorite bourbon glass, this Lowball will never shatter or leave a ring on your coffee table.

30 oz Tumbler

Days on the dock are made better with the Rambler 30 oz. Tumbler. It’ll keep your dinnertime drink cool well past sundown or your coffee nice and hot throughout the morning. The Rambler 30 oz. Tumbler is made of 18/8 kitchen-grade stainless steel, has double-wall vacuum insulation, and no sweat design. This means that you’ve got one heavy-duty, over-engineered stainless steel tumbler on your hands with the Rambler. It’s dishwasher safe, BPA-free, and ready for just about anything.

Alternative Travel Mugs You May Like

Do you want to look around a little longer? No worries. We’ve got you covered. Here are some picks for travel mugs. We’re pretty sure you will love them just as much as we do.

Thermos Stainless King 16 Ounce Travel Mug with Handle

Thermos Stainless King

We’re sure you know all about the Thermos brand. After all, they’ve been around for more than 110 years. Just like traditional containers, heat and cold find their way in through convection. Pour yourself some hot tea, coffee, or cold water inside, the heat or cold is retained in your mug through vacuum insulation. Your drink will stay steamy or icy no matter what the forecast says.

Make sure that before you use it and as soon as possible after each use, make sure you wash all parts of the mug with warm, soapy water. Rinse all of the parts thoroughly and let them dry. While this mug is easy to wash, I’m conflicted about the assembly. There are several moving parts you have to put in place for it to function before each use. Overall though, this mug has more pros than cons. It’s also top-rack dishwasher safe.

  • Ultra-durable travel mug with handle for hot and cold beverages; 16-ounce capacity
  • Durable stainless steel interior and exterior
  • Leak-proof Drinklock sealing lid
  • check Hand wash only
  • check Stays cool to the touch with hot liquids and is condensation-free with cold

AA Products Tumbler Vacuum Insulated Double-Walled 18/8 Stainless Steel Mug

Double-Walled 18/8 Stainless Steel Mug

Are you looking for the best travel mug? Well,  you’ve found one of them here. The AA Products Tumbler is a  high-quality stainless steel mug that will not break. It’s designed to last and resist rust and corrosion.

We particularly love that the stainless steel repels any lingering flavors. Slip this travel mug into your gym bag, backpack, or briefcase as your daily companion. It won’t leak. Furthermore, it fits perfectly into your cup holder, making it the perfect road trip companion.

Your cold drinks will stay cold for up to 24 hours. Your steamy beverages will stay hot for up to eight hours. This easily portable bottle can be brought just about anywhere. Take it while you’re hiking, camping, biking, or around the streets for your city explorations. A signature powder coat offers slip-free grip and extra durability.

  • Double wall vacuum insulated 18/8 stainless steel tumbler, with crystal clear lid (tritan), spill proof
  • Naturally BPA free, highly resistant to rust and retaining beverage taste, great for health and environment
  • Keeps the perfect temperature of your beverage. Cold for 24 hours, hot for 8 hours
  • check Top rack dishwasher safe tumbler, easy to clean and fits any standard size cup holder

Bottlebottle 20 oz Insulated Tumbler Cup Stainless Steel Coffee Mug

Bottlebottle 20 oz Insulated Tumbler Cup

Yes, the Bottlebottle tumbler is also made from durable stainless steel. But what makes it a good choice for the best travel mug? The inner wall and shell are combined together by welding technique, then condensing the air into the interlayer of the inner wall and the outer shell to achieve the effect of vacuum insulation. Your beverage will keep hot and cold as long as possible.

Vacuum insulation technology comes in handy too. No matter how cold or hot your beverage is, the exterior of your tumbler will stay dry and mild to hold. It won’t leak or spill in your car, bag, or on your desk. It’s important to note that this travel mug is not dishwasher, freezer, or microwave safe. The exterior is finished with gloss/matte colored powder. It is BPA free, durable and sleek. I love the variety of color choices it comes in. This is such a fun mug to take for your adventures on the go.

  • Superior Temperature Retention: This travel mug is designed to keep your beverage ice cold up to 24 hours and warm up to 8 hours. Double wall vacuum insulation technology eliminates the transfer of temperature to the outside
  • Drinking friendly and BPA Free Lid: I love that this clear lid is BPA free, designed for either sipping directly or using a straw; Large open mouth allows adding ice into the tumbler and makes it easy to clean
  • Food Grade Stainless Steel: Made from 18/8 stainless steel with super thick structure, highly resistant to rust, absorbing odor, and retaining taste. Reusable, great for health and environment
  • check No-sweat Exterior: A double wall vacuum insulation ensures the tumbler condensation and sweat free regardless of the temperature inside, guarantees a mild temperature for you to hold. No messy moisture or water stains will be left on table, car holder & bag
  • check Colorful Powder Coating: Powder coated with gloss/matte finish, stylish tumbler of various color are available, durable, provides a comfortable touch feeling, makes your tumbler distinct in the group of your friends

In this comprehensive review, we'll delve into the features, performance, value and our own experience using the Yeti Rambler Travel Mug. So let's take a closer look and discover if this travel mug will become your daily commute companion!

PROS AND CONS - Our Key Takeaways

At a glance:.

Without a doubt, the first thing that struck me was the overall appearance of the Rambler. I'm a sucker for vibrant colours and the Seafoam version reminds me of the colour of the sea off the Harris coastline. From an aesthetics point of view, the Yeti Rambler looks fantastic and this is further enforced by the feel of the mug - it's solid and feels good in your hand. I'm really looking forward to trialling the Rambler and also to see if it lives up to it's hype but my first impressions are extremely positive!

Under The Microscope - putting the Yeti Rambler Travel Mug through it's paces.

In order to give the Yeti Travel Mug a thorough testing, we made a cup of tea to go and headed out to Loch Tummel to see how long our brew stayed hot.

We put the Yeti Rambler through our rigorous testing criteria to evaluate it's overall performance and functionality, design and construction, our own user experience and value for money and overall, the Yeti Rambler excelled on the Design and Construction criteria, gaining a 5 out of 5 but we only gave a 3 on Value for Money giving them a 4 out of 5 fireside rating.

We ranked 3 on Value for Money as there are a multitude of similar travel mugs on the market that do pretty much the same thing as the Yeti Rambler but with a much lower price point. What redeemed the Yeti, in our eyes, was the superior build and feel of the travel mug that is lacking with most of it's competitors.

Under the Microscope - Our Testing Criteria

Performance and functionality 🔥🔥🔥🔥.

We popped some tea into the Yeti Rambler and headed up to the shores of Loch Tummel - a good 2 hr 30 min drive away to see how well the travel mug fared at keeping our brew piping hot with it's vacuum insulation wall. After a good 3 hours, the tea was as hot as when we first poured it and even an hour later, was still hot enough to enjoy.

The Yeti Rambler is not spill or leak-proof so avoid lying it on it's side for prolonged periods but upright, the Stronghold™ Lid does an excellent job of keeping your tea where it's supposed to be when driving. The fact that despite it's larger base, it will fit in most cup holders from cars to camping chairs.

Yeti Rambler Travel Mug in Seafoam

Design and Construction 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

The design of the Yeti Rambler is outstanding. Quite simply it looks and feels fantastic. It fits extremely well in your hands and has a heavy, satisfying weight to it that is immensely appealing. The base of the mug is wider than most, which means the mug is less inclined to tip over. The handle works well for both lefties and right handed users and the lid rotates to accommodate various placement options to suit you.

The travel mug is constructed from 18/8 stainless steel, a set of metal alloys that are resistant to corrosion and combined with their DuraCoat™ tech, the colour and finish of the mug will resist fading and peeling. It's a mug that's as stylish as it is rugged but with one small flaw with the lid.

User Experience 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Using the Yeti Rambler was not as straightforward as I assumed it would be! Firstly, I struggled to open the Stronghold™ lid which had me wondering whether this thing was so air-tight that I was never going to get in! Once opened, it did rotate easily to the various placement options for either left-handed or right-handed users but it wasn't as smooth as I had envisaged.

The dual slider took a bit of getting used to but once conquered, seemed to work very well and kept my tea from sloshing around and spilling. The major issue I had with the lid was how difficult it seemed to drink from it. Maybe I'm not seasoned enough to know the correct way to do this, but I found that my tea came rushing out all at once and ended up mostly down my jumper.

Yeti Rambler Stronghold™ Lid with Dual Slider

The feel and look of the travel mug are outstanding and it felt lovely having a cup of tea from my Yeti mug sitting on the shores of Loch Tummel but it was dampened somewhat by my inability to drink properly from the mug.

Comparison 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Compared to other vacuum insulated travel mugs, the Yeti Rambler stands head and shoulders above the competition with it's instantly recognisable iconic design and colours. It's superior rugged construction gives excellent performance but it's higher price point will be a deterrent for budget-conscious buyers. It's worth weighing up the price versus Yeti's strong brand reputation to see if it's the right fit for you.

Value for Money 🔥🔥🔥

The Yeti Rambler is an expensive piece of kit. For a travel mug used on your daily commute, it seems an excessive price point due to the few flaws it has. However, from the point of view of durability, excellent design and appearance, then the Yeti Rambler is worth the investment.

Got some questions about the Yeti Rambler Travel Mug? We've got you covered! Check out these frequently asked questions for valuable insights, tips, and practical information to help you make the most of travel mug.

How long does the Yeti Rambler Travel Mug keep drinks hot or cold?

Yeti state that the Rambler will keep cold drinks cold for 24 hrs and hot drinks hot for up to 6 hours. We found that the Rambler kept our tea piping hot for just shy of 4 hours and then it became luke-warm at 5-6 hours.

Is the Seafoam finish durable?

Yeti use a DuraCoat™ finish on all their mugs which protects against colour fading or any scuffing or scratching on the outer layer giving extended durability to the mug.

Is the Stronghold ™ Lid spill-proof?

The Stronghold™ lid is leak-resistant but not spill or leak-proof. If the travel mug is laid on it's side for extended periods of time or chucked in your bag for your daily commute, there will be some spillage.

Our Final Verdict on the YETI RAMBLER 20oz TRAVEL MUG: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I will definitely be keeping my Yeti Rambler travel mug but I don't know if I would necessarily buy the same model again.

The Seafoam Rambler looks incredible and you are instantly drawn to it's pleasing shape and design and the solid, comfortable feel of the mug but it does have it's drawbacks. I'm not particularly bothered with how long it will keep my tea hot as I don't want to drink a cup of tea that's been stewing for over 6 hours so the fact that it stays hot for a good, few hours, is more than sufficient for me. What bothers me more is the trouble I have drinking from the lid without it spilling all over me, especially when I'm driving on the motorway. I also struggled to take the lid off and found it quite sticky which irked considering it's price tag.

It will definitely be accompanying me on my morning commute and will be a welcome member of my gear collection but if I'm honest, I think this may have more to do with its rugged construction and stand out design and colour more than anything else!

YETI Rambler Review: Pros, Cons, and Verdict On YETI Rambler Mugs

Many people reading this YETI Rambler review may need no introduction to YETI. The YETI brand has gained huge popularity and recognition for their high performance, rugged but stylish drinkware. Whilst the products are designed with adventurous and active lifestyles in mind, their appeal has been far reaching, making them one of the most popular options for insulated coffee mugs on the market. In this article I review the current range of YETI Rambler mugs, including how they stood up to our travel mug tests, our team’s experiences and whether they are worthy of their cult following.

Photograph showing YETI Rambler mugs side by side, 10oz, 14oz, 20oz and 30oz.

YETI Rambler Review Highlights

  • None of the Rambler mugs are designed to be leak proof so these are not an option for throwing into your handbag or backpack.
  • Great performance on insulation tests, kept drinks hot (>120 f) for 3-9 hours depending on size.
  • The 10oz, 14oz and 24oz versions do not fit in car cupholders and are not meant for travel. If you want a YETI travel mug with a handle that is designed for hot drinks, the 20oz and 30oz are the options.
  • Each of the mugs can be taken apart for thorough cleaning and are dishwasher proof.
  • The larger mugs are quite heavy when full so may not work for you to carry around.
  • Overall based on quality, performance and aesthetics I think the mugs are worth their premium price tag if you don’t need a mug that is 100% leak proof. If you need a leak proof YETI for hot drinks you can find out the options in our article on the best YETI for coffee .

The current options if you are looking for a YETI mug with handle:

  • 10oz stackable mug with magslider lid
  • 14oz stackable mug with magslider lid
  • 20oz travel mug with stronghold lid
  • 24oz mug with magslider lid
  • 30oz travel mug with stronghold lid

The Rambler Magslider Lid is an uninsulated plastic lid that comes with some of the YETI Rambler drinkware products to help avoid splashes and spills. The lid is not a screw fit, you press this lid onto the mug or pull it off when you want to remove it. There is a small tab on the rim of the lid to help with removing the lid. The lid has a rubber seal which helps to make it fit snugly onto the mug and prevent leaks. I talk about the leak resistance of the lid later in this article.

Photograph showing the the YETI rambler magslider lid with its slider in the closed position.

The lid has a black slider mechanism that you can easily slide opened and closed to access the drinking spout. The slider is attached to the lid with a magnet, so that it can be quickly removed from the lid for cleaning. One downside is that the magnetic slider can pop off if you drop the lid or the mug so I have had to search along the floor for the slider a few times. I tried a quick test of dropping the lid onto a rubber mat from around a 1ft height. The slider popped off the lid about 25% of the time when it had been in the open position and about 50% of the time when it had been in the closed position.

YETI do sell replacement or additional magsliders, either singly or in a magslider color pack of three if you want to match your slider to your mug color for example. If you really like your magslider lids then you may want to go ahead and get some spare magsliders so the magslider color pack might be a good purchase. I picked up the pack shown below as we have mugs and tumblers in these colors already.

Photograph showing magslider color pack with magslider in 3 colours - white, seafoam and navy

You can also purchase magslider lids separate from the mug itself which is useful if it becomes worn or damaged. Since this type of lid is used on some of the mugs, tumblers and lowballs you may be able to use them interchangeably however be careful as there are 3 different sizes.

Magslider Lid Sizes

  • Small fits the 10oz Wine Tumbler and 10oz Tumbler
  • Medium fits the 10oz Lowball, 10oz Mug, 24oz Mug, 16oz Pint and 20oz Tumbler
  • Large fits the 14oz Mug, 26oz Cup and 30oz Tumbler

The Rambler Stronghold lid is made for travel mugs and fits the 20oz and 30oz travel mug. It is a thick but uninsulated plastic lid very similar to the magslider lid but is a screw on lid and its magnetic slider opening works a little differently. On this lid you have to press down on the slider before you can slide it open or closed. You quickly get used to this movement however it may be a little difficult for anyone with hand weakness. The lid has some grooves on the edge to help grip when screwing the lid on or off the mug.

The stronghold lid is designed to provide better leak resistance than the magslider lid. It is also designed to enable more thorough cleaning. The rubber seal on this lid is more easily removed and both parts of the magnetic slider mechanism are fully removable for cleaning .

Photograph showing the YETI rambler stronghold lid with its slider in closed position.

I repeated the testing I had done with the magslider lid, dropping the lid onto a rubber mat. This time the slider very occasionally popped off when it had been in the closed position. The slider still came apart about 20% of the time when the slider had been in the open position.

YETI do not yet sell replacements or additional colors of the slider for the Stronghold lid. You can purchase complete Stronghold lids, there are separate sizes for the 20oz and 30oz travel mugs. This isn’t really ideal; one of the team did loose the top part of the slider on their travel mug and the only solution was to replace the entire lid. What We Like

What we don't like.

  • Size works well for smaller coffees at home as it will keep them warmer for longer than the larger 14oz mug.
  • Expensive for a mug to use at home, but worth it if keeping your coffee hot for longer is important.

The YETI Rambler 10oz mug is intended to be used at home in place of a traditional ceramic or glass mug if you want to keep your coffee hotter for longer. This is really useful for example in the mornings when I’m busy serving breakfasts, packing kids lunches etc as it means I’m not left with a cup of cold coffee after 30 minutes. I find it just the right size for that first cup of coffee in the morning as well as for when I make a Latte or Cappuccino with my bean to cup machine as those are about 8oz. It obviously doesn’t provide the same beautiful presentation of a latte in a glass mug but sometimes it will be more important for me to keep the drink warm. The other downside to insulated mugs is that the mug itself will not become warm to touch, so you may miss that comfort. You can read more on how the 10oz Rambler mug performs vs ceramic and glass mugs in my review of the best coffee mugs for home .

The 10oz YETI Rambler comes with a magslider lid. Like all of the other Rambler mugs it is not leakproof but the lid works well to prevent splashes when you’re walking around with the mug. It keeps coffee hot for hours and if you usually drink coffees under 10oz then this will give the best performance. If for example you used the 14oz Rambler mug for a smaller coffee it will not keep it hot for as long as the 10oz.

Read below for lots more info on the Rambler mug range including details on performance and full spec of the mug.

  • Versatile with multiple uses.
  • Good size for coffee at home if you don’t want to refill too often.
  • Wide base makes this super stable.
  • Only stackable without the lid.

YETI markets the Rambler 14oz as a versatile camp mug that you can reach to for serving your soup and ice cream as well as your hot or cold beverages. The bowl-like width lends itself well to these alternative uses and whether using this at home or on a trip there is something comforting about eating soup from a mug! My kids have also enjoyed eating breakfast cereal from this mug and its wide base means it is really sturdy and not easily knocked over. Its also a good option for taking hot food to the office though bear in mind it is not leakproof.

The width of Rambler 14oz mug means that its insulation performance isn’t as good as the other mugs in the range, but for a mug thats intended for use at home or camp it is more than adequate . See how it performed in the hot and cold drink tests with other YETI Rambler mugs. I’ve also compared it to other coffee mugs for home , where as expected it was much better at holding heat than ceramic or glass mugs.

The stackable feature of this mug could come in useful for households where you may have more than one mug, however we were disappointed that these are only stackable with the lid removed which creates other issues with storage and lids going missing.

The 14oz mug comes with a magslider lid . I’ve described the difference between the magslider and stronghold lids here but I really felt there was no big disadvantage with the magslider lid on this mug.

photograph showing the yeti rambler 20oz mug front profile in charcoal colour.

  • Keeps drinks hot or cold for a long time.
  • Size works well for most scenarios outside the home.
  • Easy deep cleaning help prevents mould.
  • Handle is a little small, not comfortable for larger hands.
  • Slow flow through the lid opening.

The YETI 20oz mug is designed for use as a travel mug. Its narrow base should fit in most car cup holders and its handle, lid and drinking slot make it ideal for sipping when on the road. It performs really well at keeping coffee hot and is equally as good at keeping drinks cool. A few of the team commute to work and they have really liked this as an option to use in the car and then take along into the office to finish off drinking through the morning. They did find though that the handle feels a bit small for larger hands. My brother in law found himself holding the mug around the base without the handle, so he would have preferred a tumbler over this or the 30oz Rambler with larger handle.

The main weakness of this travel mug is not being leak proof . There are other travel mugs on the market that will perform as well but also provide 100% leak resistance. The YETI travel mug does win on cleaning , its stronghold lid can be fully disassembled for deep cleaning. A lot of other travel mugs have problematic cleaning which lead to mould developing in the lids.

The stronghold lid twists or screws onto the mug with a 90 degree turn and I found that you might have to try placing it a few times to get the drinking slot in the right position for you to drink comfortably. It does however work well for left and right handed users as you can position the drinking slot where needed. The drinking slot on the 20oz mug also seemed a little smaller than on the other mugs and this made the flow of coffee a bit slow for some of us.

Read below for lots more details including how long the 20oz Rambler mug kept coffee hot for.

photograph showing the yeti rambler 20oz mug front profile in seafoam color.

  • Large size and heat retention worked well when away from home all day.
  • Quite heavy when full, difficult to carry around.
  • Top heavy, more easily knocked over than others.

The 30oz Rambler mug is the largest coffee mug in the YETI range and one of the largest coffee mugs I have used. For alot of people this will be too large for coffee but it will work well if you drink coffee all through the day or are going on a long drive and don’t want to have to refill. If you prefer to have a handle then you might also choose this instead of a tumbler for your cold drinks. The size allows you to fit lots of ice with your drink if you like to drink it icy cold. As with the other Rambler mugs, the 30oz is really good and keeping drinks hot or cold for hours, which is especially important for this size where you will likely be drinking over a longer period of time.

The 30oz YETI mug does fit in most car cup holders due to its narrow tapered base. I did find though this narrow base makes the mug top heavy and it was more easily knocked over than other mugs which has led to a few spills. Do also think about weight as this mug weighs 3.5lbs when its full!

YETI coffee mugs kept coffee hot (>120°F) for up to 9 hours in our testing.

YETI don’t publish any specific insulation capabilities for their mugs, so I ran some tests to see how the mugs perform for keeping drinks hot or cold. There isn’t a single answer to the question though as there are many variables that affect the results and everyone may have different requirements. I’ve tried to capture some data for you to make an informed decision on whether the YETI Rambler mug is right for you.

I performed 3 different tests to confirm whether or not YETI mugs do keep coffee hot.

During each of these tests the mug was filled to capacity for the duration of the test. Insulated cups perform best when they are full, so you can view these as best case results. If the cup were less full, or as you drink from the cup, the performance would degrade a little.

At the start of each of these tests the temperature of the coffee was 180°F/82°C. The recommended brew temperature for coffee is around 200°F, resulting in typical poured temperature of around 180°F.

With the exception of the second test, the mugs had their lids on and slider closed for the duration of the tests (slider was quickly opened and closed for temperature testing only during the test).

The table below includes a summary of the testing, as you can see the results were pretty good and the mugs likely perform well enough for most people’s needs. The 14oz mug has a wider structure which results in heat being lost more quickly. The 30oz mug results are a little better than the 20oz and this is likely due to the larger volume of liquid rather than the mug actually performing any better.

I’ve included some photographs below to give an understanding and visibility of how the tests were performed.

YETI mugs kept drinks cold for up to 16 hours in my testing.

I performed 2 tests to see how well the mugs keep drinks cold.

Per the hot drink tests, during each of the tests the mug was filled to capacity for the duration of the test. Insulated cups perform best when they are full, so you can view these as best case results. If the cup were less full, or as you drink from the cup, the performance would degrade somewhat.

The mugs had their lids on and slider closed for the duration of the tests (slider was quickly opened and closed for temperature testing only during the test).

In the first test, we tested how long the mug could keep water cold at an ambient room temperature of 72°F/22°C. The water temperature at the start of the test was 61°F, this is thought to be an optimal temperature for hydration. We measured how long the water stayed below 72°F, which is at the top end of the scale for comfortable water drinking temperature.

The table below shows a summary of the results, with each mug performing well in this test.

In the second cold drink test I wanted to see how the mugs would perform at keeping drinks cold in hotter climates and used a temperature of 95°F/35°C. We started with the water a bit cooler for this test, at 51°F and tested the water temperature after 12 hours. As you see from the results below the outside temperature had a clear impact on the ability to keep the water cold when compared to the first tests.

YETI describe their Rambler Mugs with magslider lid as splash proof and Rambler Mugs with a stronghold lid as leak resistant but not leakproof. YETI recommend other products in their range if you want a 100% leakproof option.

I tested whether the mugs were spill proof and how leak resistant they were. I looked at whether the mug would spill when shaken upright, mimicking a car ride or walking with the mug. I also checked whether the mug would spill when knocked over as can happen from time to time.

I found no difference between the mugs I tested regardless of whether they had a magslider or stronghold lid. Each of the mugs leaked a little when tipped upside down or knocked over.

YETI offer a limited 5 year warranty on their Rambler products. The YETI mug warranty applies to products purchased directly from YETI or from one of their approved distributors and covers product defects. The warranty does not cover normal wear and term such as scratches, dents or punctures. This can be a little subjective however from what I’ve experienced and read claims under warranty have been overall positive.

Whilst our team have found YETI products to be high quality, they have encountered a few issues and made some successful claims under the warranty. In one instance a new 20oz mug didn’t seem to hold heat as expected and was replaced as defective. To claim against the warranty you have to complete an online form providing details of the issue and some photographs for review.

In our experience claims have been reviewed and approved within a couple of days. I have read reviews of claims being disputed and additional photographs being requested. It appears in most cases where there was a reasonable claim it was approved though sometimes only after escalation.

There have also been some YETI product recalls over the years but at present there aren’t any active recalls for Rambler products.

Other FAQs.

What are yeti mugs made of.

The body of the Rambler mugs are made from 18/8 stainless steel. 18/8 refers to the percentage of chromium and nickel in the steel. This is one of the most common food grade stainless steels; no chemicals can leak from the material into your drink. 18/8 stainless steel is strong and rust resistant.

The lids of the Rambler mugs are made from BPA free plastics. YETI state that all of the products and  accessories are BPA free so this means that the lid itself, the slider and the rubber gasket/seal are all BPA free. Inside of the lid sliders there are also metal magnets.

How are YETI Mugs Insulated?

YETI mugs use a very common double wall vacuum insulation technology. In simple terms there are two layers of steel with a vacuum sealed cavity between. This construction protects the liquid from the outside temperature helping to keep your drinks hot or cold.

Are YETI Mugs Dishwasher Safe?

YETI Rambler Mugs are suitable for the dishwasher. So far in our ongoing use we haven’t encountered any issues with washing our mugs in the dishwasher. We have been following YETI’s instructions to place the body on the rack, and lid in the top away from heat (at least when the mums are loading the dishwasher).

Are YETI Mugs Microwave Safe?

Since the YETI Rambler mugs are made of stainless steel they are not microwave safe. As with other metals it would create a fire hazard if you were to heat a YETI mug in the microwave. You will need to heat your liquid in a microwave proof container before decanting to your YETI mug.

How Long Does a YETI Last?

Unsurprisingly this is not an easy answer as it will come down to how often you use it and how careful you are with it. We have quite a few YETI products across the team and we’ve found them to be very good quality. Some have developed a few scratches and dents and slight peeling on the paint coating however those issues are much fewer than with some other brands. I’ve read alot of reviews of the Rambler mugs to find out if we have just been lucky but the consensus seems to be mostly positive.

I think the most easily damaged part of the Rambler Mugs is the plastic lid. I tried a  few drop tests with some brand new mugs. I dropped the mugs from around 4ft onto my concrete driveway. With one of the mugs, on the first drop the lid suffered some scuffing which I have also seen on our other YETIs which we’ve had for a few years. I included a photograph below, hopefully you can see the scuffing at the front of the picture on the lid rim.

None of the mug bodies picked up any damage during those specific drops. I think there will always be an element of good or bad luck on how something like this hits the surface.

Photograph showing scuff mark damage to YETI Rambler mug lid

When Does YETI Release New Colors?

YETI usually release some limited edition colors every season like the cosmic lilac color I pictured the 10oz mug in. As well as seasonal colors they sometimes release additional limited editions to mark events and occasionally change the permanent color lineup.

How To Clean A YETI Mug

As mentioned above YETI mugs are dishwasher safe, so I usually either give a quick hand wash or go ahead and put through a dishwasher cycle. I do like to deep clean all of my cups every so often to prevent any potential mould or dirt buildup. With YETI mugs, the deep clean focuses around the lid.

With the magslider lid, the slider and rubber gasket can be removed. With the stronghold lid, the magnetic holder below the slider can also be removed which allows for a slightly more thorough clean. Once taken apart I use a toothbrush with soap and hot water to gently scrub the pieces before drying and replacing. Its important to make sure the pieces are dry before reassembling otherwise you might encourage mould to grow.

YETI provide these instructions for disassembly and reassembly of the stronghold lid.

Photograph showing how to disassemble and reassemble stronghold lid for cleaning.

How To Remove Coffee Stains From YETI Mug

The easiest option is to add a couple of spoons of bicarb or baking soda (barkeepers friend also works well) to the cup with a few drops of water to form a paste. Then scrub around the inside of the cup with the paste and a scratch free scrubber before rinsing with hot water and soap. This will leave your mug looking like new!

YETI Rambler 20 oz Tumbler Review(A Comprehensive Review)

Nasir

This is a detailed review of the YETI Rambler 20 oz tumbler stainless steel vacuum insulated mug. This review is based on my personal experience. I am a frequent hiker and camper, and the YETI Rambler has been with me during my recent hiking and road trips. This is one of the best camping mugs that we ever used.

I also used this tumbler regularly at home and carried it to my office. After using it so much and under different conditions, I must say that this is an excellent tumbler.

Related: Best Camping Mugs

The tumbler is not backpack friendly, which may be an issue for you. It is better to go for the conventional mugs or bottles in that case.

During my trips, there were different weather conditions ranging from warm sunny days to cold thunders, rains, and even snow. The review is a complete version as I made the tumbler undergo everything that it may go through within its expected lifespan.

Table of Contents

Performance Comparison and Testing Results

The YETI Rambler 20 oz Tumbler is loaded with excellent features. These features make it an excellent tumbler and also justify its price. First, the material used is stainless steel, making it very durable. The tumbler is also BPA-free and dishwasher-safe. It can hold 1.3 pounds of liquid.

YETI Rambler 20 oz Tumbler- Insulated Mug

The company promises to be leak-proof, but my experience tells otherwise. Apart from being excellent in all the other aspects, you cannot unthinkingly trust the tumbler when it comes to leakage from the lid.

My experience showed that the lid caused leakages in quite a few instances, which can be dangerous under particular conditions.

The absence of a rubber gasket under the mag slider on the lid causes the leakage. However, the lid itself is of excellent quality and doesn’t leak.

Another feature that most people will ignore is the high quality of the paint. The paint is of extremely good quality. It didn’t fade or develop cracks over long-term usage.

My only concern regarding safety in tumblers and mugs is plastic’s wear and tear, making the drinks impure. However, there was no such thing with the YETI Rambler, even after countless washes.

However, carrying it in your backpack is unsafe as the lid often leads to leakages during my testing.

Temperature Retention

Whenever I purchase a tumbler, my biggest question is always the insulation. What is the point of spending my money if it cannot keep my drink hot or cold long enough? I would not like to fill my tumbler with ice-cold cola only to open it after 2 hours to drink warm cola.

The Rambler did a great job in this aspect. I tested it several times with different hot and cold drinks. The insulation was always excellent. The reason is that this tumbler is cleanly insulated from the lid to the bottom.

A great insulation mug with secure lid

The heat transfer is extremely slow, and it held my drinks sufficiently warm or cold for an average of 5 hours. The time may vary depending upon your liking for the extent of hotness or coolness and the climate. The significant change starts after 5 hours, and the drink remains drinkable for around 10 hours.

I did a car test to further examine this. The temperature was around 30 degrees, and I left the tumbler inside the car for 4 hours. The bottle was warm, but the drink inside was still ice cold.

This duration is more than enough and way higher than the cheaper Tumblers. Ice cold drinks become warm in 3-4 hours.

Magnetic Lid Design

In my opinion, the magnetic lid is an excellent option that makes the tumbler much more easy to access. I have seen different ranges of mugs out there which are vacuum insulated, but the lids are not magnetic. It means that you must use both hands to screw and unscrew the lid.

YETI Rambler 20 oz Tumbler Magnetic Lid

I find it very inconvenient. The underlying question was the performance of the YETI Rambler with the magnetic lid. There is no point in using the magnetic lid if I have to compromise on the vacuum.

I found the magnetic lid very tight and precise. It just compliments the insulated body of the tumbler. However, the slider is the problem and the only weakness of this tumbler. I experienced leakage due to the slider on multiple occasions.

Quality & Durability

The tumbler is quite durable. I had it with me during all types of weather conditions. I didn’t feel any modification in structure over time. During my trips, I also accidentally dropped the tumbler several times. This is where the stainless steel showed its resistance to shattering.

The sweat-free design makes it easy to carry in your hands for longer.

Cleaning & Maintenance

The YETI Rambler is extremely low maintenance and easy to clean. There were several occasions when I didn’t have access to any kind of dishwasher, but I could still clean it thoroughly without any taste retention.

I don’t remember spending any time on the maintenance of this cup. It is pretty durable, so I really think that no maintenance is required.

Versatility & Portability

The YETI Rambler is extraordinarily versatile & portable. I have used this tumbler for a wide variety of drinks ranging from cold-flavored drinks and shakes to hot coffee and tea. The tumbler did surprisingly well in dealing with the different types of drinks.

YETI Rambler A quality and well designed mug

Portability is the only factor that causes inconvenience. The magnetic lid has a slider mechanism and can pop off and damage your belongings inside the bag.

The lid can sometimes leak; therefore, I will never recommend carrying it in your backpack. Apart from that, it does fit quite well in the standard cup holders.

Value to Money

The YETI Rambler is an excellent product worth the money. The only weakness of the tumbler is leakage which only occurs under specific conditions. You don’t have to worry about leakages if you have a standard cup holder that can keep it upright.

The excellent temperature retention, build quality, versatility, and durability justify the price.

What I Like

  •   Temperature Retention.  The temperature retention is excellent; drinks are ice cold even after 5 hours under the sun.
  •   Build Quality.  Stainless steel ensures durability. The body is resistant to shattering, which ensures high durability.
  • Easy to Clean.  The Rambler is very easy to clean. Even without a dishwasher, rinsing with water made it clean.

What I Don’t Like

  • Leakage from Lid.  The magnetic slider and the lid cause leakage sometimes. I was not pleased with the lid’s performance.
  • Not Easy to Carry.  The portability of this cup is an issue. It is not backpack friendly, and you may have to carry it in your hand or get a portable cup holder.

Comparison with Similar Mugs

With  stanley classic trigger action.

The Stanley Classic trigger action features a boring design that features a trigger action. Some people may find it a better option, but I didn’t find it assuming.

The reason is that the YETI was better regarding heat retention, usage, and design. One advantage that it does have over the Rambler is that it doesn’t have a magnetic slider.

There is no chance of leakage, so that you may slide it inside your backpack, but the other features of the YETI Rambler make it the clear winner.

With  CamelBak Horizon 12 oz Camp Mug

The CamelBak may be a good bet in your office or study table. However, it isn’t perfect for hiking and camping. One of the major reasons is the lower capacity compared to the Rambler.

Also, it won’t fit in the standard cup holders because of the mug grip.

Most of the complaints regarding this mug were about its heat retention. It doesn’t outperform the YETI Rambler in any way. So, the YETI outshines this mug with ease.

Is a YETI Rambler worth it?

Yes, the YETI Rambler is worth the money because of its temperature retention, cup holder compatibility, and built-in straw that can make you drink all day long without worrying about finding a glass or cup.

Does the YETI Rambler 20 oz fit in a cup holder?

Yes, the Yeti Rambler 20 oz easily fits inside all standard cup holders. You can keep it inside the cup holder of your car easily.

Final Verdict

The YETI Rambler 20 oz is worth the price. I tested it through rough and tough situations, and it came out clean 99% of the time.

The 1% is the leakage problem. The magnetic lid is compact and helps with the insulation, but the mag slider can cause leakages, so I would not recommend keeping the Rambler inside your backpack. It is an ideal product as it is easy to clean, durable, highly insulated, and camping friendly.

I Used The YETI Coffee Mug For A Year — & This Is My Unfiltered Review

We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.

The YETI 10-ounce mug is my go-to everyday mug

I used to love the ritual of getting my daily dose of caffeine from a coffee shop, but when the pandemic hit, I decided to bring the whole operation in-house. Espresso maker, milk frother, coffee bean grinder , French press. And yet, it wasn’t until I got a YETI coffee mug that my setup truly reached the zenith. It’s not an overstatement when I say that it’s completely changed my coffee drinking experience. So what makes the YETI Rambler coffee mug so worth the price tag? Here’s my in-depth, unfiltered review — and yes, it covers a range of different mug sizes and styles from the Rambler line because my YETI obsession (and growing collection) has no bounds.

  • YETI Rambler Stackable Mug (10 Ounce), $25, Amazon

Is The YETI Coffee Mug Worth It?

The answer to that question is a resounding yes, and it should be noted that I’m not usually the kind of person to shell out top-dollar simply for a name or label. The YETI Rambler 10-ounce mug was my first foray into the world of double-wall vacuum insulation, and it immediately proved that I’d been drinking coffee wrong this whole time. With the YETI, my coffee stays hot for hours on end, completely eradicating the need to reheat. And I’ve put that insulation to the test: I’ve left a full mug in my car for over an hour — in Wisconsin winter temperatures — and come back to enjoy still-warm sips. (That said, if you’re looking for a mug with the absolute most heat-retention on the planet, I’d probably recommend the Zojirushi — which my partner has and swears by — but in my opinion, it keeps liquids almost too hot and I burn my mouth.)

The Yeti Rambler 10-Ounce Mug

Yeti Rambler Stackable Mug With MagSlider Lid (10 Oz.)

Why Is YETI So Popular?

This YETI Rambler mug feels substantial in your hand and comes with a nice handle. (Regardless of the latest mug designs out there, I still crave a handle for slow sipping and general ruminating while I work.) I also appreciate that the MagSlider lid makes it easy to carry without any splashing or spillage when I’m on the move. However, it’s important to note that the size of the mug isn’t compatible with cup holders. I considered buying a nifty cup holder expander designed to accommodate the Rambler, but I ultimately decided to just spring for the Yeti Rambler 20-ounce tumbler for travel (but more on that later).

In terms of cleanup, there’s no fuss. I just pop it into the dishwasher, and that fact alone is why this mug is my go-to over other brands that might have an aesthetic leg up. (I love the look and feel of my Fellow Carter Everywhere mug but, real talk, it tends to sit unwashed in my sink because I’m too lazy to keep up with the hand-wash instructions.) In contrast, the YETI has endured literally hundreds of spins through the dishwasher to date and is holding up beautifully. The rubber gasket around the lid (which is designed to keep the lid firmly in place) is going strong, and there are barely any chips to the pretty powder coating around the cup.

yeti rambler 20 oz travel mug review

I will say that the only place where the YETI falls short is in its leakproof-ness. While its sturdy, stainless steel construction makes it less likely to tip over in the first place, there will be some leakage if you happen to drop or knock it. I have a small coffee stain on my living room rug to prove it. (If you’re in need of complete coverage, and don’t mind a little hand washing, I would recommend the aforementioned Fellow Carter mug because of the twist-lock lid.)

If you’re liking the sound of the YETI 10-ounce mug but need a larger capacity, there’s a Rambler waiting for you. The large, né giant, 14-ounce size is perfect for when you need a serious amount of caffeine to see you through.

The YETI Rambler 14-Ounce Mug

YETI Rambler Mug With MagSlider Lid (14 Oz.)

I keep this lumberjack size in my arsenal for when I want extra-frothy lattes because it can accommodate the foamy milk without overflowing. The downsides to this mug behemoth? It is heavy and a bit cumbersome to drink out, and again, definitely not cup-holder-approved.

Of course, no YETI review would be complete without talking about the brand’s most beloved mug around: the YETI Rambler 20-ounce Tumbler . Many people find that this is their go-to mug, period — just look at that near-perfect Amazon star rating it has after more than 25,000 reviews.

  • YETI Rambler Tumbler (20 Ounce), $30, Amazon

For me personally, since the Rambler Tumbler doesn’t have a handle, I tend to use this one exclusively for taking coffee on the road. It effortlessly fits into my cup holder and the MagSlider lid keeps coffee in place over speed bumps or patchy roads. It has all the same features I love about the 10-ounce stackable mug (dishwasher-safe, durable coating, great heat retention), but in a car-friendly package. To quote my partner, who steals this mug from me for his own travels, this mug is “essential” for long drives.

The Yeti Rambler 20-Ounce Tumbler

YETI Rambler Tumbler (20 Oz.)

By this point, my family loyalty to YETI is probably abundantly clear, but, as one more example of how YETI converts skeptics into loyalists, I present: my dad. This man is the opposite of a coffee snob, routinely drinking ground Folgers without complaint. I gave him the YETI 10-ounce mug for Christmas and now he takes it with him everywhere. When I asked him what he likes about it, he said, “It’s simple. It keeps your coffee hot. Like a Thermos but in a mug.” It’s the best gift I’ve ever given him. Solidifying favorite-child status? Maybe.

YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug Review

This popular mug gets points for appearance, but that’s about it

YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug

The Spruce Eats / Suzie Dundas

Very durable; can survive tall drops

Modern design and fun color options

Very easy to clean

Only kept coffee hot for an hour

Included lid can’t be fully closed

Those who value aesthetics will love the YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug. If you’re looking for heat rentention or a spill-proof design, however, you’re bound to be disappointed.

  • Insulation Performance
  • Competition
  • Final Verdict

We purchased the YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug so our reviewer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

If you enjoy drinking coffee on the go, you’ve probably looked into travel mugs before. There are tons of options on the market, each which claim to keep your drink hot/cold for hours on end—and without spilling. Despite similar promies, few have drawn as much attention as the YETI Rambler Stainless Steel Mug. To determine if the popular travel mug was worth all the hype, we decided to pick one up see how it performed in our day-to-day. Keep reading to see our thoughts on the mug’s design, material, insulation performance, and price.

Design: Modern and appealing, but hard to travel with

At first glance, we really liked the design of the YETI Rambler. It comes in a variety of fun colors—we chose the seafoam green—and has a clean, modern aesthetic. Of the travel mugs we’ve tested, it’s the most similar in shape to a standard coffee mug, though it’s certainly more durable.

The mug comes with a plastic lid with a rubber gasket, ensuring a tight fit. Unfortunately, unlike other YETI mugs (and every other travel mug we’ve owned), there’s no way to fully close the lid. If you want to cover the spout to prevent leaks and spills (whether you accidentally knock it over or hit a pothole on your ride home), you have to pick up a YETI MagSlider Lid . We were a little annoyed to see this was sold separately for additional $10.

A feature of this travel mug we do like is the handle. At 4-inches in diameter, the mug is rather wide, so this helps reduce hand fatigue. The downside of the handle, however, is that it doesn’t fit in a standard car cupholder. This is a major drawback for those who like to bring coffee on their morning commute.

Material: Extremely durable, but too heavy

The YETI Rambler is made of thick-gauge 18/8 stainless steel, which feels very durable. In fact, it held up well in test drops from heights of 15 and 30 feet. Even the lid managed to stay on at 15 feet, which speaks highly of its durability. Of course, the mug hails from YETI—a brand that makes outdoor adventure products, so it’s no surprise that it feels made to last.

It held up well in test drops from heights of 15 and 30 feet.

While the stainless steel’s durability is an obvious plus, it does make the mug quite heavy at 11.2 ounces. We carried it while walking our dog for an hour and we had to keep switching hands to avoid wrist fatigue.

Each mug is sprayed with DuraCoat industrial paint to prevent chipping and scratching. When we accidentally dropped the mug in our paved driveway, we picked it up to find only the faintest of marks. If you know even the tiniest stratch will bother you, though, you may want to opt for the plain stainless steel mug.

Insulation Performance: Not as good as we’d hoped

As much as we wanted to like the YETI Rambler, it way underperformed when it came to temperature retention. To test the YETI’s vacuum insulation, we filled the mug with hot coffee at 8:40 AM then checked in on it throughout the next few hours. At 9:12 AM, the coffee was still quite hot; by 9:47 AM, it was an ideal temperature for drinking without burning our mouth; by 10:10 AM, however, the coffee was barely lukewarm as heat had been escaping through the opening of the lid’s spout the entire time.

As much as we wanted to like the YETI Rambler, it way underperformed when it came to temperature retention.

Unfortunately, due to its steel makeup, this mug can’t be microwaved, so we had no way of reviving the coffee once it went cold. In the small information tag that comes with the mug, YETI claims that “Hot beverages will stay hot for several hours.” Depending on how generous you are with the term “hot,” we’d say it keeps liquids hot for about an hour, and warm for maybe an hour after that.

All in all, we were disappointed with the YETI’s performance—especially considering how reputable the brand is. It is worth noting, however, that some online reviewers said they were able to double the length of heat retentioin by using the compatible MagSlider lid.

Cleaning: Can be cleaned in a matter of seconds

The YETI Rambler is a winner when it comes to cleaning. There are only two parts: the lid and the mug, both of which can be quickly and thoroughly washed in the sink. Better still, the whole thing is dishwasher safe, which makes cleaning a breeze.

Price: Higher than more effective options

Compared to similar options, the YETI Rambler is a bit on the pricey side. The mug retails for roughly $25 and the additional spill-proof lid (it comes with a standard lid) is another $10. Sure, $25 isn’t a ton money, but if you need to spend even more to keep it from leaking, you’re effectively throwing $35 at a mediocre travel mug.

Competition: Better options are out there

Contigo Autoseal West Loop Stainless Steel Travel Mug: If durability is your primary concern when choosing a mug—perhaps you’re an adventure traveler or need something for an upcoming hiking trip—then a mug from YETI is a smart move. But for the average commuter or office worker, the features of the Contigo Autoseal Mug will be much more useful. The YETI Rambler won’t fit in a car cupholder and will spill if knocked over, unlike the Contigo Mug, which has two locking mechanisms that effectively prevent leaks. The Contigo’s vacuum-insulated construction also delivers on heat retention, keeping your coffee piping hot for hours on end.

Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug: The Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug surpasses the YETI Mug in almost every way. It retains the temperature of both hot and cold drinks much better, it fits in standard cupholders, and it can be locked to prevent spills. Considering the Zojirushi costs the same as the YETI, we’d say it’s a no-brainer purchase.

Likely not worth your money.

The YETI Rambler has an appealing design and solid build. But the mug’s flaws—specifically the poor insulation performance and inability to close the lid—mean it’s not the best option for most buyers. Other mugs at a similar (or even lower) price point do a better job of keeping your drink hot/cold for longer.

YETI Rambler 20 OZ Review: The Complete Review

Getting the best insulated tumbler for you can be a difficult task. There is a lot of competition on the market, but one mug which stands out is the YETI Rambler.

It combines a stylish design with fantastic insulation. Here we will delve deeper into its features with our intensive research to see whether or not this is going to be the right option for you.

A Quick Look

YETI know a thing or two about insulation. They are known for producing high-quality coolers, and they have brought that quality into this tumbler. It’s highly durable and able to keep drinks hot or cold for a whole day.

More: Best Tent and Sunshade For Beach

The magnetic lid is a great feature, but it does mean that the tumbler isn’t waterproof. It’s great for long-term use, and there are many different color options available which are going to allow you to choose the perfect mug for you.

Who are YETI?

They might have only been around since 2006, but YETI has developed a fearsome reputation for making insulation products that have the very highest level of quality. YETI Rambler is another excellent example of this.

YETI earned their reputation from making coolers but are now expanding that into other areas. They have a reputation that you can trust to always deliver on their promises.

Who is this product for?

The YETI Rambler is perfect for anyone who wants a hot or cold drink on the go. It will last for a very long time and is capable of traveling on many outdoor adventures.

It isn’t leakproof, and that might restrict some of the uses it has. For most people, it will be an excellent tumbler that is going to keep their drinks at the right temperature for a whole day.

Key Features

YETI Vacuu Rambler 20 oz Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler

Insulation

If you want the ultimate in insulation, then a vacuum is the way to go. Heat can’t travel through a vacuum, but some mugs have weak points where heat can travel. The YETI Rambler is one such product which has minimal weak points.

More: Osprey Fairview 40 Review

That means that the heat loss is going to be very low. With travel mugs, heat can be lost out of the lid, but here it is minimal. The YETI tumbler is going to be able to keep your drinks hot or cold for a full day without any problems.

The magnetic lid

With vacuum insulated tumblers, the lid can be difficult to get right. You want it to be able to form a good seal but also make it easy to use. A lot of users don’t want to have to unscrew and airtight lid every time they want a drink.

This magnetic lid is an excellent solution as it is easy to slide but will help to keep your drinks at the right temperature. It allows you to open and use the tumbler with one hand which can’t be said for many other types of mug out there.

Safety features

Safety might not be the first concern people have when it comes to drinks, but it’s essential. Some plastics can wear away over time and contaminate your drinks. Other tumblers can be very hard to clean and can gather dirt.

More: Osprey Aether 70 Ag Backpack Review

This tumbler is BPA free and also dishwasher safer to be able to give it a thorough clean. Even without a dishwasher, cleaning is easy to make it safe. It ensures that this is a tumbler which should be able to last for many years.

The tumbler is marketed as having a 20oz capacity. But the lid fills some of that space, and therefore it’s a little bit less. It still has good size and will fit into most standard cup holders, but smaller cup holders will struggle.

The tumbler is very nearly 7 inches high with a lip diameter of 3 1/2 inches, which makes for a comfortable drinking experience and allows you to have a very secure grip.

Durability

The build quality of this tumbler is excellent. It can resist any impacts with the outside of it being shatter-resistant. The 18/8 stainless steel gives it that durability and makes it sure to last.

More: Garmin eTrex 10 Handhold GPS Review

It’s not just the metal which makes it impressive, the plastic is high quality, and even the paint isn’t going to fade over time. You get what you pay for, and in this case, it’s an incredible level of strength and durability.

Pros and Cons

  • Many color options available
  • Magnetic slider
  • Safe for long-term use
  • Double-wall insulated
  • 20 oz capacity
  • Durable paint
  • High heat retention
  • Doesn’t fit small cup holders
  • Lid will spill
  • Quite heavy

The YETI Rambler vs. the competitors

Yeti rambler vs. rtic double wall vacuum insulated tumbler.

yeti rambler 20 oz travel mug review

RTIC has developed a terrific challenger to the YETI tumbler. It also comes in a range of colors with that double-wall insulation. It is more resistant to spills when the lit is closed, but the top-heavy design can make it more liable to being knocked over.

YETI Rambler Vs BEAST 20oz Stainless Steel Tumbler

yeti rambler 20 oz travel mug review

If you want to drink out of straws, then this will be perfect. It makes it an excellent option for cold drinks but perhaps not hot drinks. It still offers excellent insulation and has been highly rated by those who have used it. The Beast also has impressive build quality.

YETI Rambler Vs Ozark Trail 20-Ounce Double-Wall Vacuum-Sealed Tumbler

yeti rambler 20 oz travel mug review

The Ozark can do everything that the YETI tumbler can do, but not quite as well. It’s very grippy which is ideal for camping or jobs where you might have slippery hands. Its insulation is excellent but a slightly inferior tumbler compared to the YETI.

YETI Rambler Vs Thermos 18 Ounce Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel Tumbler

yeti rambler 20 oz travel mug review

Thermos are usually masters at making vacuum insulated products, but this one is a little wide of the mark. The lid is poor quality, which can often lead to spilling coffee all over you. Thermos is excellent for secure tumbler, but if you want an on-the-go drink, it’s best to look at the other options.

YETI Rambler Vs Contigo AUTOSEAL West Loop Travel Mug

yeti rambler 20 oz travel mug review

This beats the YETI hands down in one area, style. It’s a very stylish mug, but it also performs very well too. It can be a little hard to clean and doesn’t have the highest level of insulation, but this could be a great option for you if you love the way it looks.

Customer Reviews

The reviews echo the reviews you get on ay YETI product. They are overwhelmingly positive with the insulation being commended. It’s also noted as being low maintenance as well as being pleasurable to drink from.

It is cold to touch and ticks all the boxes you’d expect from a great tumbler. Some bemoan the lack of a leakproof lid, but YETI doesn’t hide that fact. A lot of negative reviews note some delivery issues, but this is clearly very rare.

Those that have used it for a long time are very happy with the performance and durability.

FAQ & Additional Tips

Is it value for money.

You’d see a lot more YETI products put there to buy if it wasn’t for one thing, price. You get what you pay for, and you know that you’ll be getting a tumbler which will last for a long time.

More: Exped Down Pillow Review

The price may put off some, and that’s understandable. There are other slightly inferior tumblers out there at a cheaper price point. These YETI tumblers, however, are worth their money, especially as they’ll last for a long time.

Where can I get the YETI rambler?

The tumbler is available from YETI’s website. Also, online retailers such as Amazon will be able to deliver it to you in a matter of days. There isn’t much in the way of a guarantee with the product, but if there is anything defective on delivery, then you are going to be able to return it.

Is it leakproof?

No. This tumbler isn’t leakproof and instead has been designed for convenience. The liquid won’t come pouring out if you knock it over, but it will start to leak. The magnetic slider is designed to make it as easy as possible to drink while you’re on the go.

How long will drinks stay hot or cold?

With YETI you know that the insulation is going to be brilliant. The lid compromises it somewhat, but the contents of this tumbler are still going to be able to stay hot or cold for the whole day, and therefore you don’t have to worry about it changing temperature too much.

Final Verdict

The decision on whether or not to buy this YETI Rambler will depend on a couple of crucial considerations. Firstly, if you want quick access to a drink on the go, then you’re not going to care about the fact that the lid isn’t completely leakproof.

The second is your budget. If you want the highest quality, then this is the tumbler for you. If you’re looking for something a little cheaper, there are other options available. Overall it’s a perfect tumbler and one which is highly recommended.

Whether you’re on vacation or commuting daily, a travel mug can help you stay hydrated (or caffeinated) on the go. Studies say that trading in single-use cups for a reusable one can also benefit the environment. Plus, buying the right one could mean the difference between having a hot drink for hours and settling for lukewarm coffee after just 30 minutes.

How we picked the best travel mugs

To find the best travel mugs, we consulted an expert and prioritized the following criteria based on her advice:

  • Style/Lid type: We chose a range of different options, including mugs that are best for tea infusion, cup holders, single-serve coffee machines and more. All of the lids are also either leak- or splash-proof — a must according to Sahara Rose De Vore, founder of The Travel Coach Network . “With traveling, there’s a lot of bumps in the road,” she says. “You want something that, when it tips over, it won’t spill right away.”
  • Materials: A travel mug’s material will determine its durability and how easy it is to clean. De Vore prefers stainless steel mugs because they’re sturdy and don’t require rigorous washing.“I usually don’t find a dishwasher while traveling,” she says.
  • Temperature Control: The travel mug’s ability to keep drinks hot or cold in transit is one of the most important factors. We chose options that can maintain one temperature for multiple hours, so your drink always tastes fresh.

This stainless steel travel mug was designed with tea lovers in mind — once you remove the inner tea press, you can add tea leaves, fill the mug with hot water and steep for your desired amount of time before simply pushing down on the tea press to stop the infusion. It’s 100% leak-proof, and has double-wall vacuum insulation to keep tea hot for hours, along with a tapered lip design, so tea flows evenly from any angle, according to Firebelly. Although not dishwasher-safe, the mug can be easily disassembled for hand washing, and is also available in five colors, including Mer, Saumon, Noir and Foret.

This is Malin’s favorite mug for cold beverages like iced coffee and smoothies. She’s especially fond of the straw lid —“there’s a little silicone seal around the straw that holds it in place and makes sure liquid does not spill or splash out of it,” she says. She also likes that the mug’s design isn’t bulky, and easy to wrap her hand around.

How to shop for a travel mug

When shopping for a travel mug, there are a few important questions to consider:

  • Is the mug insulated? Insulated travel mugs can keep your drinks hot or cold for much longer periods of time. Most of the top-rated options on the market have stainless steel or glass interiors. Some options are also double-walled (or double-insulated), meaning there is an air pocket between the two layers of insulation to keep liquids hot and prevent the cup from overheating.
  • Does the mug have a spill-proof lid? Arguably one of the most important features of a travel mug is a leak-proof lid. When you buy a reusable cup, look out for ones with vacuum-sealed lids and screw-on caps.
  • How big is the mug? When shopping for a travel mug, it’s important to consider how much liquid the mug can hold. If you intend to use your mug in the car, you should also consider the shape and size, and whether it will be able to fit inside a cup holder.
  • Is the mug dishwasher-safe? Some travel mugs are made with many small, intricate parts that can be difficult to clean around. If you don't want to hand-wash your cup, make sure the one you're buying is dishwasher-safe. Please note that some insulated travel mugs are made with several silicone gaskets, which can be difficult to clean — especially if they aren’t removable.
