The Best Backgammon Sets, According to Backgammon Players

Backgammon has been around for thousands of years — Wikipedia clocks it at around 5,000 — and it is still a favorite of board-game players around the world. We can see why: The classic game doesn’t require much setup, often comes in a case that is easy to take anywhere (including the beach, as one toy-store owner told us ), and is available at every price point. “There are backgammon sets you can find in Sears or Target that are low end and then there are sets on Madison Avenue or Rodeo Drive that are made of the most expensive leathers,” says Tommy Kunu, president of Bello Games . “At the end, they are all the same — meaning you can play on them, but some you might want to leave out on your coffee table or in your game room as a showpiece.”

One of the first things to consider when buying a backgammon set is the size, according to the game-store owners and backgammon-set manufacturers we spoke to. How you plan to use it will help you choose the right size, according to Mike Kilbret of the Compleat Strategist , who says to consider whether “you will be traveling with it a lot or just using it in the house.” Kunu equates choosing a backgammon set to picking a TV screen , explaining that “you can watch a program on a 15-inch TV screen and also on a 38-inch screen, but it’s just better and more fun to watch TV on a larger screen — same with different sizes of backgammon.” Beyond size, sets come in many different materials, such as wood, cork, and leather, to name a few, some of which are more popular among certain types of players, according to our experts. Read on for a variety of sets, including some you can take on trips , one that will give you a touch of European sophistication (maybe), and even one that’ll make you look like a pro who plays in New York City parks.

Best overall backgammon set

Several of the experts we talked to recommended backgammon sets with corkboard, which make for a quieter game as you roll the dice and move the checkers around. “Professional players , especially Americans, prefer a quieter game, so the playing field of choice is either felt or leather or cork,” says Imad Khachan, the owner of Chess Forum . Quentin Turner, president of Your Move Chess and Games , says, “Here in the States, people tend to not like the ‘clang’ noise of the dice on wood, while it’s preferred in Europe .” This board is from Crisloid, a backgammon-set manufacturer that Khachan calls a “brand of choice” and says “makes excellent quality sets with a vinyl exterior but a cork playing field.” Turner also mentioned Crisloid, calling it “high end.” We reached Jeff Caruso, the owner of Crisloid , to hear more about the cork that makes his sets so popular; he told us that it “functions as a little bit of a springboard, and it helps give more action on the dice.”

A travel set

Khachan says that people often come into his store looking for smaller, travel-size backgammon sets. “There are nine-inch magnetic sets, and these are ideal for backpacking or to carry to the park or to a bar or a restaurant. They are mostly vinyl, and the prices are under $30,” he tells us. This nine-inch set zips shut, ensuring it won’t pop open while you’re on the go, and is from the brand Wood Expressions (WE for short), which Lauren Bilanko, owner of Twenty Sided Store in Brooklyn, calls “high quality.”

A set to look like a regular player at New York City parks

Khachan says that the favorite set for serious players who are not playing at the tournament level is a 21-inch black vinyl attaché set ( which, as its name suggests, folds up into a briefcase ) . “It’s also the most popular amongst New York City parks backgammon hustlers,” he adds. “It’s big but not too bulky or too heavy to carry around everywhere and everyday, and it is in the professional size so each player can easily see what’s happening on the board. And it has good contrast because the playing field is gray and the points are black and white.”

A (less expensive) black attaché set

For a set like the one that Khachan describes, you could also try this one from Middleton Games, which has a similarly gray playing field with black and white points.

An (even less expensive) red attaché set

“The basic attaché sets with the felt interior and stitched-on points are the option that almost everyone recognizes as that backgammon set lying in their closet from the ’70s or ’80s,” says Turner. If you want to embrace the retro aesthetic, try this maroon set, which feels very ’70s living room to us.

A European-style set

While players in the U.S. tend to prefer a felt- or cork-lined board, it’s much more common to find backgammon players using a wooden set in Europe and the Middle East, according to the experts we spoke with. Jon Freeman, founder of the Brooklyn Strategist , told us that when it comes to a wooden backgammon set, ones with mother-of-pearl inlays on the exterior and interior are often the most popular among those who want a wood set and are willing to pay more than you would for a typical leatherette set. “These are really fantastic to look at and have an old-school vibe about them,” Freeman says. He didn’t recommend a specific wooden set, but this one we found is made of wood, features mother-of-pearl inlaid designs, and costs less than $60. It also has inlaid points, which Turner says can make for “really nice and smooth” playing and might appeal to more serious players who want to move their checkers quickly.

A set for playing more than backgammon

Louise Simon, the owner of Brooklyn-based store Toy Space , told us about this 3-in-1 backgammon set when we asked her to recommend some good games to bring to the beach. Why buy checkers separately? If you’re buying a custom backgammon set, it’s best to start with the checkers, and then build the board around them. Or perhaps you already found a board you like, but don’t like the checkers that came with it. When buying checkers separately, make sure to take into account the thickness of the checkers as well as the diameter, so they’ll store properly in your checker tray. Crisloid’s standard 1.75″ and 1.5″ checkers are .5″ thick, giving them a nice “chunky” feel and which incidentally make it a bit harder to roll dice up on top of them requiring a re-roll. The extra thickness is well-suited to Crisloid’s standard “attache” portable sets, which have a deep 1.75″ frame (1″ playing depth is more typical these days), so take this factor into consideration before buying Crisloid checkers for a non-Crisloid set.

Crisloid does offer a wider variety of checker options with some of their “signature” or custom backgammon offerings, so if you see something you like, try contacting them directly to see whether they’re available on their own.

Generic Plastic / Melamine / Acrylic

Apart from material, finish, and size, you will need to decide whether you want checkers with “finger dish” depressions in them (elsewhere called “finger dip” or simply “dipped” checkers). Some people find that these depressions make checkers easier to grasp as you slide them across the playing surface, but most playing surfaces are smooth enough for this to be a minor factor. The biggest difference is probably aesthetic, as the bowls create curves that catch the light, adding some extra visual texture to your set. A potential downside that some find annoying is that dipped checkers tend to catch a die more readily, requiring more frequent re-rolls.

Zaza & Sacci

Also intriguing is a more expensive “weighted” option which, while the same thickness as the standard checker, have a metal lozenge embedded in the center, providing extra 12 grams of heft and also a distinctive white ring along the edges. Of course, this will add to your set’s carrying weight, and many players will find the checkers more difficult to play with.

American equipment purveyors Gammon Guys sell Artgammon products for the American market, but appear to haver a smaller assortment of color and style options available on their website.

NEBC organizer David Kornwitz owns an Artgammon board with the brass-bound checkers, so ask him for a test-drive!

Vintage Bakelite

As a popular 20th-century decorative material, bakelite was a popular checker materials from the 1930’s backgammon heyday through the 1960’s, when production of the colorful plastics was phased out due to the toxic formaldehyde and asbestos materials used in its production. Since Bakelite is no longer manufactured, these checkers are “collectible” and therefore fairly pricey, particularly for sets in unusual colors or with carved surfaces or edges.  For a more information on bakelite pieces, and a large gallery of images, please see this additional page devoted to the topic.

Dice & Doubling Cubes

Since the invention of doubling around the year 1930 , there have been a lot of variations on the standard 6-sided cube. The only real requirement is that the numbers be legible.

Precision Dice

Even a modest-quality backgammon board will get a boost in dignity if you invest in a couple pairs of precision dice. (See the entry on dice in the ‘Backgammon Sets’ area of this website .) Precision dice for backgammon are typically available in three sizes (1/2″, 9/16″, 5/8″ — which is easier to think of in common denominators: 8/16″, 9/16″, 10/16″) and a wide variety of colors.

The medium-size dice are most popular.  Larger ones are somewhat easier to read, but may not seem to get sufficient tumble on the playing surface, while also getting jammed in some baffle boxes or smaller dice cups. Smaller dice get plenty of action in shaking and rolling out, but are a little harder to read.  No one hates 9/16″ dice.

Chose colors to suit your set. Hard to go wrong with simple black & white, but it’s often nice to have a third set of an accent color matching one of your checker or point colors, allowing your opponent a choice. Many people don’t like translucent dice, particularly in lighter colors, as you can see through to pips on the far side of the die and misread your roll.

Dice Cups & Baffle Boxes

Dice cups and baffle boxes serve the common purpose of ensuring a truly random roll of the dice. The latter invention is generally regarded as most effective in foiling “dice mechanics” who may be able to manipulate dice in ways that even “lipped” cups cannot prevent (since adept mechanics may not even be putting both dice in the cup). But such cheating is very rare, and many players regard the ritual shaking and rolling of dice as an integral part of the backgammon experience. (Dropping dice into a baffle box doesn’t yield quite the same sense that  you rolled that magical number.) On the other hand, dice emerging from a baffle box rarely result in “cocked dice” requiring a re-roll — and almost never wind up somewhere on the floor. A final factor: sound . While plastic / acrylic dice scramblers are suitable for bustling tournament rooms or taverns, they’ll earn glares in quieter public settings like a local coffee shop or restaurant. Most dice cups just sound better.

While NEBC doesn’t require use of clocks except in exceptional instances of slow play, playing “on time” is worth getting used to if you intend to play at larger events on the ABT tour or elsewhere. The standard time controls are 2 minutes times match length in your “bank” and a 12-second countdown delay for each turn. So in a 9-point match you would have 18 minutes of “thinking time” to use as you like over the course of the match in addition to the 12 seconds you get each turn to roll the dice, make your move and tap the clock. For Speed Gammon events, the controls are tighter!

Rather than employing a mechanical plunger or rocker, the touch-sense buttons are activated by the slightest touch of a finger for highly reliable activation. (But note that tapping the plunger with a dice cup won’t work!) Four ‘C’ batteries purportedly allow for 1600 hours of play before needing replacement.

ZMF-II clocks are available in several color options (pink! clear!), and there is also a larger ZMF-Pro model with a large LCD display available on their site.

One consideration you should take into account is how well any clock will fit onto the checker tray of your backgammon board, or at its side. It is very annoying to use a clock that wobbles or shifts every time you hit it!

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Cait Bailey Can’t Avoid the Spotlight

The publicist is by the side of famous people like Zayn Malik, Alex Cooper and Alix Earle. She’s dating a famous chef. But she’d prefer to keep a low profile.

“Not tonight,” Cait Bailey told a photographer trying to take her picture inside an area cordoned off for special guests at a Louis Vuitton party at the Miami Beach Convention Center. “Not this time.”

Ms. Bailey, 34, suggested he instead aim his camera at Alix Earle, an influencer , and her boyfriend, Braxton Berrios, a professional football player with the Miami Dolphins.

“I’m not used to being the subject,” Ms. Bailey said as the photographer snapped Ms. Earle at the event, held during Art Basel Miami Beach in December.

Anonymity has become more elusive for Ms. Bailey, a publicist and brand strategist who runs the New York office of Align Public Relations, as her clients have grown to include people with large followings like Ms. Earle, the “Call Her Daddy” podcast host Alex Cooper , the sibling influencers Charli and Dixie D’Amelio and the singer Zayn Malik . Last month, Ms. Bailey and several of her clients, including Ms. Cooper and Ms. Earle, attended the South by Southwest Conference and Festivals in Austin, Texas, where Ms. Cooper hosted an event promoting her podcast network.

Ms. Bailey’s relationship with Mario Carbone, 44, a chef and an owner of Carbone restaurant and other establishments, has also made it harder for her to avoid attention. (Mr. Carbone was at Ms. Cooper’s SXSW event, too; he prepared Carbone’s spicy rigatoni for guests.) He and Ms. Bailey, who live in Miami Beach and in New York, have been together for six years.

Ms. Bailey’s Instagram account has no photos but more than 72,000 followers — a disproportionate ratio that some who spend a lot of time online have noticed. “Anyone know what happened with Cait Bailey?,” a Reddit user posted in a forum called NYCInfluencerSnark. “She deleted all her photos.”

Ms. Bailey removed all of her photos last year because they “were just all really outdated,” she said. Posting new ones “was just starting to feel like a chore,” she added. “It was starting to feel like work.”

That’s not to say Ms. Bailey — who has long blond hair and whose appearance has been likened to Margot Robbie’s — doesn’t use social media.

Her Instagram Stories have often featured pictures of her clients at fashion shows (many of which she has attended with them), snapshots of designer items she has acquired or photos of her and Mr. Carbone with influential people like Michael Coste, an employee at Hermès who works with its notable customers .

A Networker ‘Like No Other’

Days after the Louis Vuitton event at Art Basel in December, Ms. Bailey glided through the crowd gathered outside manicured hedges along North Bay Road in Miami Beach. Behind the bushes, a party was being held at the waterfront home of Wayne Boich, a billionaire who runs a company that invests in real estate and energy businesses, and who started another company focused on the pickleball-like sport padel .

A song by the rapper Snoop Dogg was blasting through the shrubbery. He was performing live on the other side.

It was a Friday night around 11:30 p.m. and Ms. Bailey, after sliding past a bouncer, said hello to Sergey Brin , a founder of Google, who had a deck of cards in his hand.

“He’s a great magician,” she said loudly enough for Mr. Brin to hear, prompting him to perform a trick. Then, he asked Ms. Bailey if she could help get some people into the party. “Of course,” she said. Ms. Bailey typed a little on her phone and, like magic, those people were let inside.

As Ms. Bailey made her way through the party, she was greeted by Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami, who gave her a fist bump. Then she stopped to chat with a group that included Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber . At one point, Ms. Bailey congratulated a man and a woman with a big diamond on her ring finger. The couple had recently become engaged.

“When are you and Mario going to get engaged?” the woman asked Ms. Bailey.

“Oh, I can’t take on one more project right now,” Ms. Bailey replied with a laugh. “He’ll know when I’m ready.”

During Art Basel Miami Beach, Ms. Bailey went to some 20 events. Mr. Carbone, a self-described introvert, said Ms. Bailey’s “social ability” and “the way she controlled a room” were among the first things that had drawn him to her.

Ms. Earle, who started working with Ms. Bailey in February 2023, echoed Mr. Carbone’s sentiments. “When I first met Cait, no matter where we were or where we went, she knew someone important in the room and always took the time to introduce me,” Ms. Earle said. “She can network like no other.”

Ms. Bailey’s networking ability also appealed to Remi Bader, a plus-size influencer who started working with Ms. Bailey in 2021. Since then, Ms. Bailey has helped Ms. Bader develop relationships with brands like Valentino and Balmain.

“I feel like if I didn’t have Cait pushing for me and fighting for me, they wouldn’t have worked with me,” Ms. Bader said.

An Unexpected Plot Twist

Ms. Bailey, who grew up outside Baltimore, has built her network through several jobs, including positions at blue-chip and up-and-coming public relations agencies.

The path she has taken has deviated significantly from what she envisioned after graduating from Georgia Southern University in 2012, which she described as: Return to Baltimore’s suburbs, marry a lacrosse player and raise children who would go to the same private Catholic school that she attended.

“It was the dream,” Ms. Bailey said. “And I was excited for that future.”

Her mother, Patti Caudill, an assistant clinical professor of speech pathology, helped put her on a different trajectory. Not long after Ms. Bailey graduated from college, Ms. Caudill participated in a charity auction where she bid and won a prize for her daughter: an internship opportunity in New York at PMK BNC, a public relations firm.

“I came home one day and my mom was so excited,” Ms. Bailey recalled. “She said, ‘I just secured an internship for you.’”

Ms. Caudill said she never had any doubts that her daughter would be successful, but that she never envisioned Ms. Bailey having the career she has today. “She’s kind of blazed her own path,” she said.

Ms. Bailey’s internship led to a full-time job that involved keeping track of press about clients at PMK, which has since merged with Rogers & Cowan to form a new agency . Her desk was in a hidden-away area — “basically the supply closet,” as she put it. Its location made it a place where some employees “would come and cry,” she said, or vent.

Michael Cohen, an assistant at PMK when Ms. Bailey worked there, described her as his “work wife” back then. “It was clear she was a people person,” said Mr. Cohen, who is now the president of film and television at Lena Dunham’s Good Thing Going Productions. “She valued relationships.” He tipped Ms. Bailey off to what would be her next job: a position as an assistant to a publicist at PMK whose clients have included Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez.

After four years at the agency, Ms. Bailey left to work at a start-up digital concierge service. But it wasn’t long before she started to miss working in publicity, she said.

She quit and started working as a freelance publicist — a line of work she said she might still be in were it not for a phone call she received in 2019 from Nicole Perez-Krueger, a former publicist at PMK, who at the time was building a new company called Align Public Relations.

Good Instincts (and Timing)

Ms. Bailey, after being hired at Align, took a particular interest in influencers, or content creators, on TikTok. The app arrived in the United States in 2018, only a year or so before she started at Align.

Among the first potential clients she approached were Charli D’Amelio and her elder sister, Dixie, influencers who have parlayed their social media fame into a TV show .

Charli D’Amelio recalled that Ms. Bailey came to the sisters’ family home in Norwalk, Conn., for a meeting in March 2020, with a bag of bagels in tow. By the time Ms. Bailey left, the D’Amelios had made a verbal agreement to become Align clients.

“I had never heard of a publicist before and I didn’t know what that was or why I would want one,” Charli D’Amelio said. “Cait came over and explained what they do and how they would be able to help the family.”

By then, Ms. Bailey and Mr. Carbone had been dating for about two years. They met in 2018 at his namesake restaurant on Thompson Street in the Greenwich Village in Manhattan.

Mr. Carbone was there with a friend, he said, when he received a text message from Shay Mitchell, an actress with whom he is friendly, asking for a last-minute reservation. She was with Ms. Bailey; Ms. Mitchell, who is a client of Ms. Bailey’s, first met her when she was working at PMK.

“I told her we were full, but if you want to join us, you can,” Mr. Carbone recalled telling Ms. Mitchell. “She said, ‘Great, I’ll take it.’ And that’s how I met Cait.”

Introducing them, Ms. Mitchell said jokingly, “means reservations for life!”

Mr. Carbone said he grew up in a family in which “working hard was standard.” To be in a relationship with someone who has a similar work ethic “makes it easy,” he added, noting that Ms. Bailey’s achievements have had very little to do with his.

“There is no piggybacking on Major Food Group,” Mr. Carbone said, referring to his company, which has recently opened a string of restaurants in Florida.

A telling sign that he had fallen for Ms. Bailey, he said, was his decision to get rid of a beloved vintage U-shaped sofa in his New York apartment.

“It was beautiful, but it was impossible to sit on, to lay on,” Mr. Carbone said of the couch, a piece by the furniture designer Maurizio Tempestini. “In the beginning, she was nice about it because we were in the courting stage, and you don’t want to say anything. But eventually she was like, this is the worst couch ever.”

As Ms. Bailey has inspired Mr. Carbone to give up certain things, he has influenced her to take up new pursuits like backgammon. “She got better than me, and I admit that,” Mr. Carbone said, describing Ms. Bailey as a “bad loser and a worse winner.”

“If she wins, she gloats; if she loses, she finds an excuse at why I got lucky,” he said. “This goes for all games. It’s not a lot of fun to play with Cait.”

Not that Ms. Bailey has much time to play.

“She is really working away,” Mr. Carbone said.

Having a partner who is ambitious “and is just as passionate about what they do is a beautiful thing,” he added.
