Baby Gear Recommendations

Packing tips: traveling with a baby.

Traveling with a baby is no easy feat. You need a baby packing list, of course, but it’s also important to know the best strategies. Here are five important tips for taking your baby on vacation.

1. Embrace being prepared

This is the only time in your life when overpacking might actually be the right thing to do. While you don’t want to go too overboard—you’re likely also traveling with bulky items like a car seat and a stroller after all—there’s something to be said for simply having the items you know you’re going to be using. You still have to haul them, but then you get to focus on just being at your destination rather than turning vacation into errand-running time

2. Consider shipping or delivery

The age of delivery translates well to vacationing with a baby. Yes, you could pack a box of diapers (if that’s your approach, see the tip on vacuum compression bags below), but depending on your destination you might also be able to schedule a delivery of necessities to show up at the hotel or vacation rental at the same time you do. Want your own stuff? Consider shipping items ahead so you have everything you need without carrying it with you.

3. Use compression bags

Traveling with a stock of diapers? Don’t want to leave the favorite blanket or snuggly sleep sack at home? The best way to increase packing density is by using  vacuum compression bags  for those bulky items.

4. Practice in advance

All those items, they’re all so little, right? But when you put them all together, they can take up more space than you’d expect. Do a quick dry run before you’re packing against the clock so that you can make any adjustments when you have time to creatively problem-solve. But first? Make a packing list. You’ll likely save both some sanity and money with this approach.

5. If it increases your chance of vacation success, bring it

This is an especially difficult approach to embrace if you’re used to traveling light, but sometimes it’s worth hauling extra gear if it means you and your family will be able to settle in and enjoy themselves more. Debating whether or not to bring the baby monitor, or the playmat, or a third set of jammies in case of middle-of-the-night leakages? If it could make the difference between 10 minutes more leisure time for you, and a happier baby to boot, it’s likely worth it.

In the world of baby travel necessities, the gear you choose really has to earn its keep. Here are my favorite road-tested baby items, from a sturdy, comfortable, and roomy diaper bag to a portable tub that packs down smaller than your next beach read.

A well-stocked diaper bag will take you far. When you’ve got the right diaper bag necessities, you’re ready for everything on-the-go. Hit the  beach , take a  drive , or see the sights. Just make sure you’ve checked these diaper-bag musts off your baby packing list.

The Perfect Travel Diaper Bag

When traveling with a baby, you’re going to want a  diaper bag  that holds everything you need for a day of sightseeing: one that has enough pockets and compartments to hold your needs, plus the baby’s must-haves, too. Look for a diaper bag with at least one insulated pocket for the bottles and food.

My pick: HapTim Multi-function Baby Diaper Bag

Cloth Diapers, Disposable Diapers, and Swim Diapers

Whether you use cloth diapers or disposable diapers, you won’t want to leave them off your baby packing list. At home I use cloth diapers, but when traveling I treat myself and pack disposable. (Let’s be honest: Is it really a vacation if you’re washing cloth diapers every night?) There are plenty of environmentally friendly disposable diaper options out there. Also, If you’re going on a  beach vacation  or somewhere with a  pool , remember to bring a swim diaper, too! No one wants to deal with poop in the pool.

My picks: Bum Genius (cloth diapers), Bambo Nature (disposable diapers), and i. play (swim diapers)

Diaper Cream

Let’s be honest, when you’re traveling you may get a little lax on diaper changing. Of course, a diaper rash is the last thing you want to get out of hand. Add some diaper cream to your baby packing list so you won’t have to spend precious vacation time figuring out where to buy some.

My Pick: Burts Bees Baby Diaper Rash ointment

Cloth Diaper Wet Bag

If you’re going with cloth diapers, a wet bag is an absolute must for your baby packing list for vacation. It’s also important to have in case of an accident, or to stash wet swimming gear.

My pick: Planet Wise Wet/Dry bag

The best part about baby wipes is they are oh-so-multi-functional. Not only will they clean up baby’s behind, you can use them for after-meal clean up, to wipe your hands, or wipe a spill. They are the secret weapon of must-have items for traveling with a baby.

My pick: WaterWipes Unscented Baby Wipes, Sensitive and Newborn Skin

Changing Pad

Most diaper bags come with a  changing pad , but always make sure you have one on your baby travel checklist. The last thing you want is to have to change your baby and discover that there’s no soft, clean spot to do it. You can whip out a changing pad on the  train , at a restaurant, on the floor — anywhere, really!—and you’ve automatically got a clean, sanitary spot to change your baby.

My pick: Comfy Cubs Changing Pad

Hand Sanitizer

Hand sanitizer should be at least 60% alcohol , so always check the back before you buy. For grab-and-go convenience in a diaper bag, consider individual packets of hand sanitizer or travel-size hand sanitizer bottles that can be attached to the outside of the diaper bag.

My pick: Purell Flip-Top Travel-Size Hand Sanitizer with Jelly Wrap Carrier

How to Pack for Baby : Clothes

Babies on vacation, like babies not on vacation, tend to get messy. Sometimes it’s from eating, other times an ill-fitting diaper, and fittingly for vacation, sometimes it’s because they’re sandy or dirty from having so much vacation fun. Here’s what to pack for little vacationers and how to choose the right baby clothes for travel.

Extra Clothes

While adults get trapped into the whole “I’ll need extra outfits in case something happens” routine, we often forget the need for extra clothes when considering what to pack for a baby. When you’re packing for baby, make sure to add extra clothes (for baby and maybe yourself, since babies tend to share) to both your diaper bag and your checked bag if you’re flying.

My pick: Carter’s

Jacket, Sweater, and/or Sweatshirt

Even if you’re going somewhere tropical, such as a  Caribbean cruise , it’s a good idea to pack  extra layers  for your baby. If it’s summer, or you’re heading to a  tropical destination , bring something lightweight. But definitely include at least one jacket or other warm layer on your baby packing list.

My pick:   Carter’s

Hat for Sun Protection or Warmth

Even if no one in your family has ever had a sunburn, your baby needs a  sun hat . In cooler weather, be sure to put him or her in a  warm hat  that covers those tiny ears.

My picks: i. play (sun hat) and this adorable Alepo Winter Beanie Hat for Baby (winter hat)

Bathing Suit

Whether you’re taking a  beach vacation  or traveling in the winter and staying in a hotel with a pool, a swimsuit is an important item to have on your baby travel checklist. Look for a  baby bathing suit  that’s slightly big to accommodate diapers, and so the baby will get the most use out of it.

My pick:   Hanna Anderson Baby Rash Guard Suit

We all know baby’s socks never stay on. You won’t want your baby to have bare feet wherever you go, so add baby shoes to your list of must-have items for traveling with a baby. Moccasins are great, as are Velcro booties.

My pick: Hudson Baby Unisex Cozy Fleece Booties

Baby Feeding Items to Pack

Unlike with slightly older kids who can eat a variation on what tweens, teens, and grownups eat, babies and very young toddlers require a BYO approach to eating on vacation. Here are common baby feeding items to pack for vacation. Adapt your own baby travel checklist depending on age and whether you rely on breast milk, formula, or a combination of both.

Pack as many baby bottles as you will need for one day. Yes, you are going to have to wash them every day, but this is one of those instances where luggage space is important.

My pick: The Medela Breastfeeding Gift Set (non-BPA; comes with bottles, nipples, travel caps, breastmilk storage bags and more)

Portable Breast Pump

If you’re breastfeeding , you may not need to bring a pump since you’ll be with your baby while traveling. However, it might be nice to still have a break every once in a while (or you may be an exclusive pumper). Bring a  portable breast pump , or, better yet, a  hands-free breast pump !

My pick: Bellababy Double Electric Breastfeeding Pumps with Touch-Panel High-Definition Display

Bottle Warmer

You can always just use a bowl and warm water if you need to save space, but if you want to bring a bottle warmer , there are loads of travel-friendly options worth adding to our baby travel checklist.

My pick: Chicco Digital Bottle Warmer

Bottle Sanitizer

If you’re like me, you’re paranoid and sanitize your baby bottles daily. Luckily, there are portable bottle sanitizers out there that clean quickly and are effective against 99.9 percent of germs.

My pick: Medela Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags for Bottles & Breast Pump Parts

When making your baby packing list for vacation, set aside the amount of formula you’re going to need for the trip (plus a little extra), then measure it out and put it in a Ziplock bag so you aren’t carting around a giant container of formula. (Or, have it shipped to your hotel ahead of time, along with your other must-have items for traveling with a baby.)

My pick: Earth’s Best Organic Dairy Infant Formula

Depending on how old your baby is, packing baby food for vacation may or may not be a concern. However, if he/she is eating solids, you can’t forget to pack the food! Pouches are easiest because you can throw them in a bag and they don’t take up too much space. A bag of baby oatmeal won’t take up too much room, for example, and all you need is water to mix it up. Make sure to have plenty of snacks on hand, too. Cheerios and teething cookies are good, easy-to-pack options.

My pick: Happy Baby Organic Superfood Puffs

Familiar Dishes and Utensils

Bringing the dishes and utensils that your baby is used to is key when on a trip. All you need is one of each, and it won’t take up too much room. It’s a case where a small addition to your packing list goes a long way toward your baby’s adjustment to vacation life.

My pick: Avanchy Bamboo Dishes

Easy-to-Clean Bibs

For several months, I kept my son in a bib at all times because he was drooling so much. Bibs are a must-have item for traveling with a baby. Pack bibs that are easy to fold up and wipe down easily (try to avoid cloth bibs for vacation).

My pick: Bumkins Sleeved Bib

Breast Milk Storage Containers

If you plan to pump while traveling with your baby, make sure to bring proper storage containers. Breast milk storage bags are your best bet because they take up less space and are easier to transport. Don’t forget to bring a small cooler so it will keep on your way back to your hotel or vacation rental .

My pick: Medela Breast Milk Storage Bags

Baby Travel Gear

Good news: As kids get bigger, the amount of stuff you will need to pack will shrink. For now, though, having the gear and items to keep baby comfortable and happy increases the chance that you’ll also be comfortable and happy. Here are more must-have items for your baby travel checklist.

Some Favorite (Small) Toys

Wondering how to travel with a baby? With  toys . Try not to go overboard with this, but toys are important, not just at your destination but for your baby packing list for the plane or car ride, too. A few things to keep your baby entertained (such as a favorite stuffed animal, a few books to read aloud, something you can hang off of the stroller) will go a long way. Keep ’em small, though!

My pick: Playgro My First Bead Buddies Giraffe

Baby Blanket

Even on vacation, you’re going to need a baby blanket in case it gets chilly. Bring a blanket the baby is familiar with, so it gives them some comfort away from home.

My pick: LeerKing Ultra Soft Baby Blankets

Baby Carrier/Sling/Wrap

Babies don’t want to be in a stroller all day, so some sort of baby carrier is a must for vacation (ideally one that both parents can wear comfortably). Opt for a baby carrier / sling / wrap so that if your baby wants to be held, you’ll still have your hands free.

My pick: Bable Baby Carrier

Foldable Stroller

If you plan on having your baby nap while you’re out and about, you probably can’t get away without a stroller on vacation. For packing purposes, a foldable stroller should be your priority. It will remain useful right through the toddler years.

My pick: GB Pockit Stroller

If you’re on a  road trip with a baby , you’re already using your favorite  car seat . If you’re flying somewhere, you can use the car seat on the plane and when you arrive. The downside of flying with a car seat is lugging it with you, but there are all sorts of  ingenious ways  to roll a car seat through the airport.

My pick: Doona Car Seat/Stroller

Foldable Play Mat

A friend of mine gave me a play mat after I had my baby. I hadn’t registered for it, and I had no idea how useful it would be. (We use it all the time .) It lives in my car, so we have it whenever we need it. It’s great for outside and inside. Pro tip: Get a play mat that folds up into its own bag. It’s as great for daily life as it is when you need to turn a hotel room into a baby playground.

My pick: mloong Baby Play Mat

Travel Crib

Your hotel, resort, or vacation rental (or grandma’s house) may provide a travel crib , but if not, you’ll need to add one to your baby travel checklist. I was worried my son wouldn’t sleep as well in a travel crib, but he had no problems adjusting.

My pick: Graco Pack n’ Play Playard

Crib Sheets

Whether you’re bringing your own travel crib or using a crib provided by your hotel or resort, don’t forget to pack your own crib sheets . My pick: Cuddly Cubs Pack ‘n Play Sheets

Foldable Baby Chair/High Chair

If your baby is old enough to sit up, you’ll need a foldable  baby chair  or  high chair  on your baby packing list. It may seem like a lot to bring, but you’ll be glad you did (and sorry if you don’t). Not every restaurant or vacation rental property offers booster seats for babies. And trust me, you don’t want to get stuck having your baby on your lap throughout your whole trip.

My pick: Summer Infant Pop ‘N Sit Portable Infant Booster Seat

White Noise Machine

No matter where you go when you travel with a baby, it won’t sound like home. Bring along a portable white noise machine to drown out any unfamiliar sounds that may interrupt sleep. You can also download white noise apps to a tablet or an old cell phone, or even bring along a small smart device like an Echo Dot that can also provide white noise.

My pick: MyBaby SoundSpa

Speaking of a tablet or an old cell phone, bring one. Not only is it useful for the white noise, there are also several monitor apps you can use, so if you’re not staying in the same room you can have a baby monitor without having to bring one separately. Plus, you can use it to play videos for older babies.

My pick: iPad or Fire Tablet

Burp Cloths

My son is a year old now and we still use flannel or muslin cloth burp cloths for everything. Pack a bunch so you have one for every bag, and plenty to spare if one gets, ahem, ruined.

My pick: Gerber Flannel Burp Cloth

Medicine and a Thermometer

You don’t want to get stuck without medications on vacation when your baby is not feeling well. Add the basics to your vacation packing list, like Infant Tylenol, as well as any prescriptions your baby may need. A thermometer is also a good idea to have on hand so you don’t have to scramble to find one.

My pick: iProven Medical Digital Ear Thermometer with Temporal Forehead Function

Portable Bath Tub

Sure, you can always use a sink, but you never know how big the sink will be. Luckily, there are several portable baby tub options that pack well and aren’t too expensive.

My Favorite: Mommy’s Helper Inflatable Tub

The Ultimate Packing List for Baby Travel (+printable checklist!)

Over the years, i’ve written a lot about how to travel with a baby..

Between leaping head first into baby travel when Evelyn was 5 weeks old, to taking our special needs baby Sophie on several trips around the country, we’ve become pretty well-acquainted with the world of travel with a baby by now.

Truthfully, traveling with a baby is not all that bad. But it does require a ton of preparation for  all the things  that you might possibly need.

We’ve covered  what to pack in your carry on  before, along with  everything you need to know before flying with a baby . I’ve even shared our favorite baby travel gear and travel-friendly toys .

But one thing I haven’t covered? A comprehensive, everything-you-must-pack guide to make the whole trip with baby go extra smoothly!

trip outfit for baby

We were reminded of just how much stuff one little human can require as we prepared for our month-long adventure around Southern California . Our packing list felt endless . And I can say pretty confidently that we left nothing behind.

So let me spare you the stress of wondering “what am I forgetting” ?

Read on for our ultimate baby packing list of EVERYTHING you might ever need when traveling with a baby!  (+a free printable checklist at the bottom of this post!)

Baby Packing List | Travel Gear

First things first, the big stuff !

You may not need all of these items for every trip, but for the most part, we bring this same travel-friendly baby gear just about everywhere we go:

  • Baby Carrier | A baby carrier is a must, even if it’s nothing more than an efficient way to move through the airport. I know not all kiddos love the carrier, but we find that having both a carrier and stroller available when we travel with Sophie is essential. You just never know when you’ll run into a place with lots of stairs or uneven sidwalks, so it’s good to have a back up that will keep you moving freely. We started out with the  ErgoBaby , but made the switch to the more lightweight and compact  MiaMily toddler carrier with Infant Insert and absolutely love it. Still on the fence? Read up and compare  all of our favorite carriers for babies and toddlers here .
  • Stroller  | Even though our carrier is indispensable, we like to have options. For newborns, I adore the Doona Car Seat & Stroller 2-in-1 . I only wish this had been around when our girls were babies because it takes so much hassle out of traveling with a baby! For us personally, we love and recommend the lightweight and carry-on compliant  Babyzen YOYO+ , which is great for older babies who can sit up on their own (don’t forget the puchase a compatible backpack carry bag – so worth it)! For newborns you can add on the bassinet pack onto the YOYO+, just keep in mind you will have to gate check the stroller with this add-on.
  • Car Seat  | Depending on where you’re going, you may or may not want to bring the car seat. If you will need one, the Maxi Cosi and  Nuna Pipa  are two that can adapt to a YOYO+ without the bassinet add-on (just get some  adapters like these , and you’re good to go!). For older babies, a popular choice is the  Cosco Scenera Next , which is super lightweight at just 10 pounds. I recommend getting a car seat bag to keep it clean while flying, and if you’re worried about it getting banged up by luggage handlers, you can upgrade to a padded car seat bag .
  • Travel Crib | We’ve always brought our own travel crib, mostly because I want our kids to feel the comfort of a familiar sleeping environment, no matter where we are. We’ve been especially happy with our  Baby Bjorn Travel Crib , which has held up with our travels all over the country these past 6 years. For infants, you can get away with a more compact option, like this Travel Pod Bassinet . And if you’re in a pinch, most family-friendly hotels will offer cribs for free, or you can rent one from a baby gear rental company, like BabyQuip . Read up on all  our favorite baby travel cribs here .

Pro Tip: Don’t want the stress of traveling with all your gear? Use BabyQuip and get bulky items like cribs, strollers, high chairs, car seats and so much more delivered straight to your hotel or rental!

Packing Cubes | Sun Hat | Baby Socks | Moccasins | Pajamas | Boys Swimsuit | Girls Swimsuit

Baby Packing List | Clothes

Sure, babies require a lot of stuff to pack, but the one area where they don’t take up much space in the suitcase: clothes!

I use these packing cubes for everyone in the family and almost everything for baby can fit into just one:

  • Pants & Leggings  | Usually 2-3 pairs. In colder months I’ll skip the rompers and dresses, and add more leggings, pants and sweaters.
  • Shirts & Onesies | Usually 2-3 tops, adding 2-3 more in winter months.
  • Dresses or Rompers | Usually 2-3 for warmer destinations, because they’re so easy to pack and don’t require mixing and matching tops and bottoms.
  • Socks | 2-3 pairs , even in the summer months in case we end up somewhere chilly.
  • Booties or Shoes | I’ve recently become obsessed with little baby shoes, but I try to stick to one simple pair of baby moccasins that match everything for travel, like these from BirdRock Baby .
  • Hat | A must, no matter where you’re traveling, whether a sun hat for the spring and winter, or a fuzzy hat for the fall and winter.
  • Swimsuit | Only if necessary, of course. These boy and girl options from Rufflebutts are our favorites.
  • Pajamas | I stick to just 2 pairs of footie pajamas  (plus a 3rd pair worn on our travel day).

This might not seem like a lot of clothes, but if we’re traveling for more than 5 days, we’ll wash and rewear items to keep our packing light. This means making sure we have access to laundry facilities while we travel (whether it be an Airbnb with a washing machine, hotel with a laundry room, or a wash and fold laundry service nearby).

Tommee Tippee Bottles | Formula Dispenser | Travel Mug | Slim Ice Packs | Pumping Backpack | Breast Pump Battery Pack | Bottle Cooler | Nursing/Car Seat Cover | Muslin Swaddle Blankets | Dr. Brown’s Bottle Wipes | Travel Dish Soap | Travel Bottle Drying Rac k ( similar one here ) | Stackable Snack Container | Silicone Snack Cup | Wipe-Clean Bibs | Spoon with Case | Folding Spoons | Squeeze Pouch Baby Food | Sippy Cup with Weighted Straw | Travel High Chair

Baby Packing List | Nursing & Feeding

Things change quickly with a baby, and depending on their age and feeding habits, you may need any of the following:

  • Bottles | We’ve always traveled with just two bottles and been fine. Tommee Tippee and Dr. Brown’s are our favorites.
  • Drying Rack | I love our OXO travel drying rack ( similar option here ); it’s come in handy more times than I can count! We also have a larger version of this Boon travel drying rack at home, and would highly recommend either. It’s truly one of the items you don’t think you need until you’re balancing wet bottles around a hotel sink.
  • Dish Soap | Never fails, I always forget dish soap! If you’re staying in an Airbnb, there’s no need to bring your own (unless you’re particular about what you use). But if you’re staying in a hotel, for sure pack this little travel-size one  for washing bottles!
  • Nursing Cover | There’s a good chance you’ll have little privacy for nursing during travels, and at the very least a nursing cover can help with getting little ones to fall asleep in busy places. Or for a lighter solution, a muslin swaddle is great and doubles as a blankie.
  • Breast Pump & Supplies  | It’s a pain to lug around for sure, but if you’re going to need it, consider investing in a few pieces to make pumping on-the-go easier: a special  backpack and battery pack . (and good news, the airline won’t count this against your carry on luggage allowance)
  • Cooler Bag | We love a little cooler bag with ultra-thin ice packs , or if you need room for more bottles, this Medela cooler bag is a great option too.
  • Formula Dispenser | For babies on a formula-fed diet, this little guy makes mixing bottles on the go so much easier .
  • Tall Insulated Mug  | This simple, yet useful item is a must for an on-the-go bottle warmer. Just ask your airport coffee shop to fill it with piping hot water after you get through security, and then dip your bottle in to warm milk up in no time!
  • Wipe-Clean Bib | Once baby is into solids, a wipe-and-reuse bib is awesome for on-the-go feedings.
  • Travel Spoon | Our favorite is still this one that comes with a little case for easy storage, or try these squeeze pouch food adapter spoons .
  • Snack Catcher | This travel container is perfect for little cereals you don’t want spilled all over.
  • Squeeze Pouch Baby Food | If you’re feeding while traveling, skip the mess and squeeze it from  pouch form onto the spoon!
  • Sippy Cup | We’ve tried many of the years, and these classic sippy cups from Munchkin or these sippy cups with weighted straws are both at the top of our list of favorites.
  • Bottles Wipes | It’s tough to clean bottles, pacifiers, and spoons on-the-go, but  these bottle wipes are a safe and easy way to do it when you don’t have a sink handy.
  • Travel High Chair | If you have the space for it, I can’t recommend this travel high chair enough, which folds down flat for packing. You could also opt for a cloth seat harness for an even lighter, more compact option.

Refillable Wipes Case | Dirty Diaper Baggies | Hand Sanitizer | Hand Sanitizing Wipes | Natural Bug Spray | Sunscreen Stick | Brush & Comb Set | GoToob+ Container | 2-in-1 Shampoo and Body Wash | First Aid Kit | Inflatable Bath Tub | Travel Size Pain Reliever | Travel Size Diaper Rash Cream | Travel Size Lotion | Travel Thermometer | Nail Clipper

Baby Packing List | Health & Bath

  • Diapers | My rule of thumb is to pack a maximum of 8 diapers in the baby backpack and then buy more as soon as we arrive.
  • Travel Wipes Case | These no-frills travel wipes cases have become my favorite over the years. Like diapers, I load one up with as many as I can fit and then buy more once we’ve arrived in our destination.
  • Dirty Diaper Baggies | These dirty diaper baggies have also come in handy more times than I can count.
  • Baby First Aid Kit | We keep a super simple kit that includes only the basics, like travel-size diaper rash cream , infant pain reliever , a few bandages , a small  thermometer , nail clipper , skin cream , etc. For all those other ‘what if’s’, we’ll buy it at our destination if needed.
  • Prescription Medicines | Keep liquids in their original containers to avoid any issues with TSA, and for anything needing kept cold, we use our bottle cooler bag with ultra-thin ice packs .
  • Sunscreen | These pocket sunscreen sticks are my absolute favorite because they’re easy to apply and take up so much less space.
  • Mosquito Repellent | This natural one is our favorite. No chemicals or stink!
  • Sanitizing Wipes | Especially good for wiping down a dirty airplane seat. I always keep a small travel-size pack in the diaper backpack.
  • Hand Sanitizer | For obvious reasons, I always keep a travel-size hand sanitize r clipped to the backpack.
  • Baby Shampoo & Body Wash | This 2-in-1 combo is our favorite, filled in a small GoToob+ travel container .
  • Brush or Comb | Of course.
  • Inflatable Travel Tub | Finally, this handy inflatable bath tub is an absolute favorite of ours and has gotten way more use than I ever thought it would. It’s definitely worth the purchase if you don’t have access to a tub or your baby is not sitting up on their own yet.

Baby Packing List | Play & Sleep

  • Play Mat | We’ve stayed in lots of Airbnbs with hardwood floors and little comfortable space for baby to play. I so wish this fold-and-go baby gym was around when my kids were little (or this similar travel-friendly option ).
  • Small Toys | I try to keep toys to a minimum, mostly because when you’re traveling, you’re out and about a lot anyway. Sassy brand makes a ton of my favorite simple baby toys, and I keep a little collection in one of these  mesh storage bags for easy packing.
  • Pacifiers & Pacifier Clips | We find these pacifiers with these clips  to work great!
  • Swaddle Blankets | Another must-pack item, Aden & Anais makes our favorite muslin swaddle blankets that double as a nursing cover or burp rag too.
  • Crib Sheet | Whether you bring your own travel crib or use the hotels, we like to have our own crib sheet. This crib sheet that’s designed specifically for portable cribs has traveled with us again and again.
  • White Noise Machine | We love our  Shusher and I swear it has made all the difference in helping our babies fall asleep in new places. This portable sound machine is another favorite among traveling moms.
  • Favorite Blankie | Even though it can be a bit of a pain to travel with, having a soft baby blanket sure is nice for wrapping baby up on a cold airplane or having a familiar comfort from home.

23 Best Travel Essentials for Babies in 2024: All You Need to Bring

The whole point of this blog and many other family travel blogs is to show you that you don’t need to stop traveling just because you had a baby. In fact, a baby’s first year is an excellent time to travel (we speak from experience!).

The only daunting factor is the number of items a baby needs. How do you take all the stuff on your baby registry with you on a trip? Obviously, you don’t!

We and some other family travelers have put together a list of travel essentials for babies so that you don’t have to worry about what to bring and what not.

Make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom. We’ve added a downloadable baby travel essentials list underneath this article. Oh, and it’s editable so you can remove any things you don’t need – or add them if we missed any baby travel items.

23 Travel Essentials for Babies

We traveled a lot when my daughter was a baby and the one thing that made things so much easier was keeping my hands free the majority of the time. The thing that helped me with this the most? A backpack-style nappy bag !

The usual, messenger style, the nappy bag was so difficult to carry around, I was constantly having to adjust it and the strain it caused on one shoulder was immense. So, I switched to a backpack-style nappy bag and I’ve never looked back.

As well as keeping both hands free to care for the baby, backpack nappy bags usually have a ton of different shapes and size pockets and compartments so keeping all that baby gear organized is a breeze.

The biggest benefit to me was the fact that the weight is distributed evenly across your back , so there is no shoulder pain or constant moving of the bag to get comfortable!

If you’re traveling with a baby, it’s always a good idea to bring snacks. A whole lot of snacks.

In fact… that’s also a great tip for traveling with toddlers or older kids.

Not only will this keep them occupied, but it can also help avoid tantrums (if your baby is an almost-toddler). Snacks can also help pass the time on long flights or car rides. And let’s be honest, the food on planes is not exactly suitable for babies (or anyone, really).

So save yourself some hassle and pack a few snacks for your little one. Trust us, you’ll be glad you did.

Items that can be carried along while traveling with a baby (include the ones that are appropriate for your baby’s age) :

  • cooked rice/ rice balls
  • pureed fruits/ cooked vegetables like apples, carrots, beetroot, sweet potato, peaches, green peas
  • any kind of porridge/ cereal/ cooked legumes
  • finger foods like cooked potato/ carrot/ cucumber sticks, meatballs, hard-boiled and chopped eggs, chopped ripe fruits like apples, mangoes, strawberries, watermelon, nuts and dry fruits
  • soft whole wheat pancakes in different flavours

Make sure to carry insulated containers to keep the food hot/ frozen until use, and enough serve-ware.

This tip by Ale from Universo Viajero is definitely one we use. A couple of extra onesies are part of our baby travel kit anywhere we go. Ale suggested one extra outfit, but I’m going to up that and propose 3 extra sets, just to be sure (imagine being on a plane and having a couple of poo-splosions!)

When you’re traveling with babies, disasters are imminent, no matter how careful you are at feeding hours or letting them play. They may even find a water pond on the street and decide that crawling on it is the perfect game.

At any minute there may be an explosion of food, diaper, crying and many others. Protecting yourself against any eventuality is practically impossible, but there are always some tips to make the solution more bearable.

One of my favorites is to never leave your accommodation without a complete change of clothes for your baby, it can even be more than a complete change if you are going to be too many hours away without a return option. You will not use much space in your bag and you can leave them in the stroller or backpack diaper bag until it is necessary.

Don’t forget to include a disposable or washable bag to leave the clothes that have been spoiled there, keeping odors and dirt separated from the rest of your belongings.

You might’ve thought about spare clothes for your baby, but parents usually forget to think about themselves. And yes, technically, you could keep on wearing that shirt with baby vomit for the remainder of the journey.

But, trust me, you’ll thank yourself if you threw an extra t-shirt into the hand luggage!

Travel essentials with baby: moving around

This must-have item was contributed by Chelsea from Pack More into Life. For us too, this is the most indispensable piece of travel gear for babies. In fact, when we were only traveling with our Little Elf, it was the only item we brought!

dad with his kid walking with a baby carrier on the back

Traveling with babies can be a bit daunting, but having the right gear to travel with kids can make all the difference. One of my favorite items is a soft structured baby carrier such as an Ergobaby , Tula , or Kinderpack (#AffiliateLinks).

These carriers are easy to roll up and store in a backpack or clipped onto your back when not in use. Then when your little one is ready for a nap or needs a ride , you can easily toss them into the carrier, snuggle them in, and off you go to explore!

We used our carriers at home as well as when we were traveling. They are perfect for inside airports , on public transportation , and when exploring a city that doesn’t lend well to strollers . The carriers all have multiple adjustment points and can often be shared between two adults when someone needs a break from carrying the little one.

If you are up for a bit more of an adventure, make sure to swap your baby carrier for a more outdoor-sy equivalent! Katalin from Our Life Our Travel did the same.

We are an outdoorsy family and a hiking baby carrier is essential for our travels. Strollers are great for parks and for short walks, but if you want to spend several hours hiking with your baby, the only convenient way to do is using an ergonomic hiking carrier.”

Katalin's husband with their child in the hiking carrier

With a hiking carrier, you have two free hands for taking photos or just holding hands with your partner, and neither rougher terrains nor stairs are a problem to pass. The young ones can observe the surroundings much better from your back than from a stroller, so it is easier to keep them occupied for longer periods of time. They also enjoy being carried and close to you , so it’s a double win!

Contributed by Melissa from My Travel Strollers

A photo of Baby Trend Expedition Jogger Travel System.

If you aren’t familiar, a travel system is an infant car seat and stroller that can click together . The advantage is that if your baby falls asleep in the car or on a flight , you don’t have to remove them to transfer to a separate stroller.

One of our favorite pieces of gear for traveling with a baby was our travel system.

It was perfect for traveling (as well as use around town) because we didn’t have to worry about strict bedtime or time zone changes while on vacation. For example, when we took our son to Hawaii at 3 months old, he would fall asleep on our drive to dinner (6pm locally, but 8pm back home). We could just clip his car seat into the stroller and sit back for a nice quiet dinner!

If your baby is not tiny anymore, you could use a travel stroller instead of a travel system. Chris from More Life in your Days loves bringing a compact stroller on vacations.

A photo of travel stroller.

One of our traveling-with-a-baby essentials is to take a compact travel stroller with us.

Whilst we love our baby carrier, there comes a point when your back needs a rest and your baby has had enough of being cooped up. This is where a travel stroller can be a lifesaver, giving you the chance to explore at your own pace.

A travel stroller will come in handy throughout your trip. From getting through the airport to sightseeing at your destination and even changing a nappy on the go ,  you will definitely appreciate having somewhere to put your baby down that you know is clean, comfy, and portable.

There will be no need to put the holiday on hold while your baby naps. Let them sleep in the stroller and enjoy some fresh air while you explore new places.

When we first traveled with a baby we took a full-size stroller and it was such hard work to have to haul it around with us on and off the buses and trains.

We now know better and have discovered that there are some amazing travel strollers that are as good as full-sized ones, just in a nice tiny package. Many of these have newborn setups so you can take them exploring with you from a very young age!

If you are up for a bit more of an adventure, make sure to swap your travel system or travel stroller for an outdoor-sy equivalent! Mary Beth from A Reluctant Mom will tell you all about one of her favorite travel accessories for babies.

Mary Beth and her family with the off-road stroller

We do a lot of outdoor and national park travels, so bringing the best off-road stroller  is one of our favorite travel essentials for a baby!

Its large rubber tires make it great for hiking, and we’ve been able to use it on a surprising number of park trails. It recently got us through some awesome hikes at Yosemite, Big Sur, and the Grand Canyon.

I’ll be honest, they’re a little bulky to travel with. But if your travel itinerary includes taking baby off-the-beaten-path , an all-terrain stroller is a must.

They can tackle rocky, uneven trails like a breeze, and the suspension keeps the baby comfy while bouncing over all those bumps. They’re also versatile enough for urban exploration, unlike your average travel stroller which probably wouldn’t be sturdy enough to go from city streets to  no  streets.

We promised ourselves that we’d keep traveling to the parks after the baby came along, and our outdoor stroller has made it easy to keep that promise!

Bringing along a car seat is a great idea whether you’re traveling by plane especially if you’ll be renting a car at your destination. Kate from Tear Free Travel thinks so too and always brought one when her kids were smaller.

As much as we can see the benefit of having a car seat on the plane, we don’t see ourselves dragging along such a huge travel gadget for babies.

Kate's kid chilling in the travel car seat

One of the most indispensable travel items for trips with babies is a   portable car seat for travel .

We’ve traveled a lot with our kids when they were young and bringing along the car seat always makes traveling with young babies a breeze.

We typically bring our Maxi Cosi bucket seat as this car seat is super lightweight, easy to buckle in with a regular seatbelt, approved for the airplane, and fits onto our Uppababy Vista stroller .

Although we don’t typically buy a seat for our infants under 2, we have had a few occasions where we were able to score an extra seat on the plane and brought our car seat on with us. Being hands-free while the baby slept quietly on the plane was an amazing feeling indeed!

If you’re planning on using a car eat in your rental car, but you didn’t book an extra seat for your baby, bring a gate check bag for your car seat to make transport easier.

A travel car seat is not to be missed on a trip with a baby, don’t leave yours at home!

If you do bring a car seat for your older baby or toddler, it won’t fit into the travel system anymore. If you don’t want to drag a chunky item along, think about bringing a car seat cart. Lauren from My Favorite Jobtitle is Mom will tell you all about it.

Lauren's kid sitting in the car seat which is strapped onto the car seat cart

The car seat cart is the travel item we never leave without when traveling with a baby.

The cart is made of lightweight plastic and folds into a square that easily fits in carry-on luggage.

When unfolded it has a buckle similar to an airplane seat belt to secure the car seat to the cart .

Once the car seat is attached, the child can be strapped in and pulled like roller board luggage.

This makes it super easy to travel all the way to the gate with the car seat without having to carry it .  It also allows our convertible car seat to replace a big stroller .

The cart is a basic design that fits all convertible car seats . Therefore, you don’t need to worry about finding one that is specific to your car seat brand.  This cart is definitely an indispensable part of our baby travel gear.

Traveling with baby essentials for sleeping

When you’re used to a co-sleeper on the side of your bed, bringing along a baby nest is a great way to co-sleep without having to put your baby in your bed .

Betty from MomBrite loves using the DockATot . Babies love the comfort of their own bed. When they are traveling and need to sleep in a new, foreign crib or bed, they may feel anxious and therefore not able to sleep as well. She loves that the DockATot provides the comfort and safeness from home.

A photo of baby nest for co-sleeping.

The rounded sides create a barrier between your baby and the parents so that you can sleep with your baby peacefully in your bed.

The DockATot is designed so that the baby feels snug and cuddled while sleeping, which oftentimes allows the baby to sleep better and longer.

For traveling, you can simply get a travel bag for the DockATot and bring it with you as part of your luggage.

This baby travel product can be used from 0 to 8 months and is lightweight and portable.

Having your baby sleep well while traveling can make a huge difference in your experience since you can feel energetic and awake while exploring the sights! Plus, you can also use it as a changing pad and activity gym (with a few extra accessories) in your room, so that’s travel baby items to bring.

As an alternative, you can bring along a travel crib, but if your baby is used to sleeping close to you that might cause some trouble. You can also just put your little one into bed with you, but always (always!) make sure to bedshare safely (especially if you’re not used to doing this regularly).

If you don’t want to bedshare with your baby – be it with or without a baby nest – a travel bassinet is a perfect solution. Another big bonus is the fact that you can take it along for naps when you’re out at a restaurant too.

A photo of Baby Delight Snuggle Nest Bassinet.

Mandi from Big Family Small Adventures loved using a pop-up travel cot when her kids were still small. She found it the most useful travel essential for babies when she went camping with her large family.

“I love the pop up travel cot because it is so light and folds away so small it can easily be stored within your suitcase . When you reach your destination, just take it out of the bag and there you have it: the perfect place for your little one to sleep.” – Mandi

However, if you don’t mind the extra space, it might be more comfortable for your baby to bring along a portable cot . Many places state that a cot is included, but you can never be sure if it will be suitable for your child, therefore taking your own with you guarantees a good night’s sleep for both you and your baby.

Or you can always do what so many parents do: ask your hotel to provide a baby bed. You can save a lot of space by not bringing your own portable crib. When you’re staying at a hotel with your baby , make sure to call ahead and ask for a crib to be set up before you arrive.

Cath from Passports and Adventures has one item which she would class as one of the best travel essentials for baby and that is a white noise item.

Her product of choice was Ewan the Dream Sheep , who became a member of their family when their son was one month old in a bid to help him nap better during the day.

A photo of Ewan the Dream Sheep.

Ewan the Dream Sheep is a cute little sheep that has a built-in white noise machine that can play four different sounds , a built-in night light , and his Velcro tail allows him to be attached to a cot bar or stroller arm .

Because he was a firm part of the family’s nap and bedtime routine, Ewan also became a baby travel essential when they took off with their son.

He has traveled to Slovenia, New York, and Ireland among many places, and they only stopped using him after their son turned four. He ensured their son was able to drift off to sleep in new surroundings without any hassle and soothed him back to sleep if he woke during the night.

Alternatively, you can download an app with white noise sounds – or any other soothing sound. We highly recommend White Noise Baby Sleep Sounds .

It’s an app with 40 different sounds ranging from heartbeats, a plane, or a hairdryer. We originally downloaded the app because we wanted our son to be soothed by the sounds of the ocean (we thought that would come in useful when traveling), but turns out he only wants to sleep with the vacuum cleaner on. So that’s what we have been listening to for the last 10 months *sigh*.

I don’t know if we are the only ones always putting up towels or bags in an attempt to clock out the light, but turns out Emily from Journey of Parenthood has a way better way of doing this: black-out curtains ! So we’ve gone ahead and purchased them and we couldn’t be happier! Little Dragon sleeps so much better when it’s dark in the room!

A photo of Portable Travel Window Blackout Curtain.

If you’re thinking about traveling with an infant or older baby, black-out curtains are a huge help. It’s a must-have for a family vacation that many parents don’t think to pack.

When driving in the car it’s perfect to help to block the sunlight coming in from the windows to allow Baby to sleep.

When staying in a hotel room the curtain can be used to cover the window (suction cups are included!) so Baby can sleep and get the rest they need in order to be happy and content for the family vacation.

We’re trying to keep things as normal as possible for our little ones, so if you use a sleeping bag at home, bring it along on your trip!

A photo of sleeping bag.

For babies under 4 months, we recommend a swaddling sleeping bag to keep them cozy and comfortable. We are a big fan of the swaddle sacks with arms up since babies like to suck on their hands to soothe themselves.

We’ve been using this sleeping bag for Little Dragon until he was about 6 months and always took it along for overnight trips.

Pay attention to the weather at your destination. If you’re going to a place with a hot climate, think about bringing a sleeping bag in a light fabric such as muslin. For example, this really cute one with hedgehogs

trip outfit for baby

Our kids never batted an eye when we didn’t bring their favorite cuddle bear or blanket as a baby ( that did change a lot when our daughter turned 3 though! ). As we usually bedshare, they always just needed their moms close to being able to sleep well.

However, many kids are much more attached to their favorite soft toy and can’t sleep without it. In that case, it becomes one of the must-have baby travel items you should bring as leaving this behind could be disastrous!

When we were travelling with a newborn by car for the first time, my daughter was very unsettled and grizzily but we just thought it was the car trip that was unsettling her. Later that night at our destination she continued being very upset and unsettled, and crying a lot which she doesn’t normally do. We then realised our rookie error, we had forgotten to pack her favourite blankie that she always cuddled when sleeping. Luckily for us my brother was joining us the next day and was able to bring the missing blankie with him ensuring a peaceful night’s sleep for baby, us and our neighbouring holidayers from our second night onwards. We learnt quickly from this mistake and ever since then, the favourite blankie has been the first thing listed on our packing lists! Ingrid from Fabulous and Fun Life

Travel baby essentials: eating

You may be debating whether a travel high chair is really essential baby gear for travel, but if your kids are as messy and wriggly as our youngest, then it definitely is!

It is hard enough to feed a baby in a new environment, but if they are sitting on your knee, can’t see you, and you’re trying to spoon feed them, it is pretty hard to keep clean, and calm.

Adding a portable high chair is key to a good restaurant experience with a baby but even if you’re just having a picnic, things just get so much easier.

There are many different types of travel high chairs , but both we and Jennifer from Backyard Travel Family went for the so-called ‘hook-on high chair’.

Jennifer's daughter chilling in her portable high chair

The Phil and Teds lobster saves the day when it comes to eating out with babies.

This travel high chair is super compact . You can keep it under the passenger seat in the car and it is pretty lightweight , so you can bring it along in your suitcase as well.  It has two “claws” that clamp onto any surface that has a decent flat overhang.

You can use it at playgrounds or camping spots, attached to a picnic table, but it will also work in restaurants (with the right tables) and kitchen benches at your Air BnB.

Safety straps will hold them in, but what’s especially great is how deep the sides are .  There is no chance of a baby wriggling out of this high chair. It is easy to clamp on and off, and if you give it a push, it is as solid as a rock.

#19 Inflatable Nursing Pillow (<6months)

I’m a breastfeeding mom and one of the things I love most is that you always have your baby’s food with you, wherever you go. You don’t need to bring anything else.

But that’s not to say there aren’t any breastfeeding essentials that can make your life easier. For Marta from Backpackers WRO , for example, an inflatable nursing pillow is one of her baby travel must-haves.

A photo of inflatable nursing pillow.

At home, I always use the feeding pillow, and this is one of my favorite baby essentials.

Fortunately, inflatable feeding pillows were invented, which makes me feel even more comfortable when traveling. I am sure that I maintain a proper feeding position , and my little fellow feels safe and cozy as well.

The main benefits of an inflatable feeding pillow are that it is light , compact , and does not take up much space in our backpacks, as it has the size of a small book!

If you’re traveling by car and have enough room, you can always just bring your regular breastfeeding pillow. Especially when your little one is still a newborn, that pillow comes in handy for a lot of things.

Another one of those travel baby accessories when you’re breastfeeding, is a travel pump.

Maybe your partner is used to bottle-feeding your baby regularly? Or you’re planning on using babysitting services offered by your family or by the hotel? In those cases, bringing a travel pump is a necessity!

Whether you choose an electric pump or a manual pump is completely up to you. The former takes up more place, obviously. It all depends on how much you will need to pump and how easy your body gives up the milk if it’s not the baby hanging at your breast.

I’ve always been very happy with my  Medela Maxi Swing  , but it’s a little on the expensive side. So you can check out the ones below for more budget-friendly travel breast pumps.

A photo of travel pump.

Alternatively, you can always express milk manually . Just bring along one bottle that you can use to store it or – if you only want to use it in your baby’s bath or just throw it away – a plastic water bottle will work fine too. Some people have noticed their breasts give milk easier by hand-pumping than by using an electrical or manual pump.

Travel gear baby: bathing & caring

Another one of those indispensable items that should be in your baby travel kit is a first aid kit. Things tend to happen when you’re traveling with a little one – especially when they start crawling and walking.

A photo of first aid kit.

My kids love to play outside and run around, but things happen and someone will trip or run into wild weeds. This is when our first aid kit comes into play. First aid kits can easily be purchased; however, we like to make our own and throw it in our diaper backpack when we travel. In our first aid kit, we typically put general items such as band-aids, vitamin E ointment, thermometer, allergy medication, alcohol wipes and sanitizer, as well as specific items for allergic reactions, fevers, inflammation, and burns.  There will be places that will not have these items readily available or families may find themselves in locations far away from any store or pharmacy. Going out into the wilderness, camping, safaris, boating, and other activities where first aid may not be available. Having your own first aid kit is essential, as a few simple items can make a big difference when traveling with kids.  Diana – The Elusive Family

Contributed by Priyadarshini from Glorious Sunrise

Baby wipes are one of my favorite family travel tips as it’s the most important item I always pack when traveling with kids. They come in super handy especially in buses, trains, or flights to clean the surface before you seat your kids.

A photo of baby wipes.

In airplanes, when you change diapers for the little ones in the bathroom, wipe down the changing table before placing the changing mat.

On road trips, when the kids are done with their snacks, pass them a wipe to clean their hands and their seat . This helps in keeping the mess in the car and sticky car seats and sticky toys at the minimum.

Wipes help clean up the toys and pacifiers that inevitably fall when you are out and about.

Tip: Having baby wipes in a plastic bottle or travel-size pouch makes it easy for dispensing.

This might seem like a little early for a baby’s first year, but as we are big supporters of Elimination Communication , I felt that it did belong on this list. Ever since our daughter was 9 weeks old (and our son was only 10 days old!), we integrated listening to her signs about needing to go to the toilet into our daily lives. It was all about communication, but not having to do ‘regular’ potty training was a big plus! She stopped wearing diapers at the age of 10 months and we were accident-free by 1,5 during the day and 2 at night. We used the Potette for a long time ourselves, both at home and while traveling.

Noelle from Diary of a Travel Family loved using the Potette travel potty as well when her kids were small.

A photo of travel potty.

The Potette folds up really small in its carry sack and comes with little disposable bags . It’s like throwing away a dog poo bag. Ew, I know. But hey, #parentlife. If you’re lucky enough to be by a bathroom when nature calls, the Potette’s sides fold out to fit on a regular toilet seat .

We think back fondly on all the places we used our Potette: near ancient ruins in Tulum, in bushes by the monkeys at the zoo, in the parking lot at Dollywood… so many memories.

Phew, you made it to the end of this list. As I said, you don’t need to bring every item you see here. It’s merely a reminder for you so you can go all “Oh yes, I completely forgot about that!”. Remember, some people travel minimalistic and some like to bring as much as possible ‘just in case’. It’s all up to you – either way is fine.

Happy travels with your baby!

The Only Baby Travel Packing List You Need (Plus a Free Printable!)

I lived off of lists before having a baby, but now I truly can’t live without them (#mombrain). So of course I had to create a baby travel packing list that I could use for all the trips we have planned with little Luca!

While I knew that traveling with an infant was going to be a whole new ball game, I honestly didn’t realize the insane number of items you have to pack until I started thinking through everything. And I’d consider myself a sensible packer!

From baby gear to baby clothes, there are just so many different things to consider. That said, I figured I’d share the baby travel checklist I created for myself with you!

If you’re getting ready to go on a family vacation, scroll down to see and shop my baby travel packing list.

I’ve also included a download a PDF version that you can print and check off as you go.

A collage of items included on this baby travel packing list including a travel car seat carrier, travel stroller bag, travel crib, baby beach tent, and more!

PS: I know this looks like a lot! But…

  • Depending on the age of your baby or where you’re traveling to, you might not need all of this. And some things (like car seats) you might be able to rent.
  • I fit most of these baby travel essentials in one carry-on suitcase. I only had to put like 2 things in my own suitcase. Thankfully, baby items are pretty compact.

At the end of the day, I wanted to make sure this baby travel packing list was thorough. But you can take what you need, and leave what you don’t. Either way, I know it’ll make those road trips or air travel days that much easier.

Before we jump into the details, subscribe below to get your printable baby travel packing list!

Meach’s Essential Baby Packing List

Here’s everything you need when traveling with a baby… and then some. 😉

So you know, I’m making suggestions assuming you will not have access to a washer and drier. If you do, you can choose to bring less and wash items during your trip. That’s totally up to you!

PLEASE NOTE: This blog includes affiliate links from partners like Amazon Associates and LTK. If you click on one and make a purchase, we could earn commission. This comes at no expense to you as the buyer, but it supports this blog and my family. Thank you in advance for your support!

Since accidents happen, especially with infants, I recommend packing two baby outfits per day of your trip. That way you always have a set of spare clothes.

I also recommend keeping at least one change of clothes handy, in a diaper bag or carry on bag, at all times. Emergency outfit changes can happen anywhere with little ones, so it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Personally, I think one pair per day is sufficient. Even if there’s an accident, it’s unlikely there will be one every night. But you know your child best, so you do you.

PS: Burt’s Bees Baby has the BEST jammies! They are great quality and fit so well.

Like the baby outfits, I think it’s a good idea to pack two onesies per day. I know Luca often gets his messy while eating, and sometimes too messy to keep wearing.

One pair per day is likely fine, but it never hurts to pack a couple extras.

Think water shoes , sneakers , sandals , boots, etc. Whatever is weather appropriate! Just be sure to pack whatever you’ll need to match the baby outfits you packed.

Outfit Accessories

Outfit accessories might not be essential baby travel items for some, but they are for me. Think bows, warm hats, sun hats , headbands, and sunglasses .

This is especially important if your travel destination is to a cold weather climate. But even if you’re going to the beach, you might want a light denim jacket or zip up in case you’re out and about on a cool evening.

Even if you’re going to a cold weather climate, your hotel might have a pool. So don’t forget to pack your baby’s bathing suit!

FYI: My favorites for kids are from Amazon (a bunch of boys and girls are linked in my Amazon storefront ) and Dillards .

Dirty Clothes Bag

I always pack dirty clothes bags to keep things that have been worn separate from things that haven’t. It just keeps the suitcase from getting unnecessarily messy. And it makes packing up/unpacking easier, too.

Be sure to bring one per suitcase to evenly distribute dirty clothes across all of your bags. They can get heavy, and overweight bags can be costly if you’re traveling by air.

A picture of baby travel essentials including silicone bibs, a travel baby bottle drying rack, bottle dish soap, and more!

Bottles and/or Sippy Cups

I think it’s best to have enough drink ware for a full day of feedings. If you’re going to be doing a lot of exploring, you don’t want to have to stop and wash things along the way. You can do all of that each night at once.

Travel Bottle Drying Rack

Speaking of washing bottles, a travel bottle drying rack is one of those essential items that sounds kind of ridiculous, but I promise it’s super handy! Especially if you’re staying in a hotel room with limited counter space.

This is the best way to keep all of your bottles organized and contained. Plus, it makes it so much easier to move all of the pieces when necessary.

Portable Bottle Cooler

A portable bottle cooler with an ice pack is strongly recommended so you can keep baby food, formula, breastmilk, etc. cool on the go.

Luca drools nonstop, lol, so we pack two cotton bandana bibs per day of our trip. Plus we bring two silicone bibs (total) for his baby food feedings.

Burp cloths

Again, two per day seems to do the trick for us. But if your baby spits up a lot, bring some extras.

If your baby needs spoons, forks, plates, or bowls, be sure to pack a few!

Travel Snack and Formula Containers

You’ll want these for the days away from your home base so you don’t have to carry a bunch of large packages.

I really like these travel snack and formula containers from Amazon.

Portable High Chair

Luca is currently eating baby food, so for the time being we’re going to just feed him in his stroller when we travel. However, we do own a portable high chair and know it will go to good use once he’s a little bigger.

That said, if your baby is a little older and eating/snacking on their own, you’ll want to get them a portable high chair with a tray. At the very least, you’ll want to bring a tray for their stroller so they have a comfortable place to eat.

Baby Food and Snacks

If you can, only pack enough food (think formula, baby food, snacks) for your travel day(s) and then one extra day beyond that in case there are delays.

These items are heavy and hard to travel with. If they break or spill, then they get all over EVERYTHING. So I recommend just picking up extras once you get to where you’re going.

Bottles of Water

Whether your baby drinks water alone or you use it to make formula, make sure you have enough of it to get you through your travel day(s). Again, you can pick up extras later.

Obviously, if you’re traveling by plane, you can’t take full water bottles through TSA. So give yourself enough time to pick some up once you get through security.

Bottle Brush and/or Sponge

You’ll want a bottle brush and/or sponge to clean your bottles, bowls, and utensils.

FYI, a travel-sized dish soap should last you a full week.

Dish Cloths

Personally, I just think it’s gross to dry dishes with hotel towels, lol. So I pack a few dish towels for this purpose.

If you’re breastfeeding and/or pumping, you’ll also want to bring your…

  • Portable Breast Pump
  • Breast Milk Storage Bags
  • Breast Milk Cooler
  • Pumping Bra(s)
  • Anything else you’ll need to clean your pump parts.

Sound Machine

Dane and I don’t go a day without using our white noise machine . If your baby uses sound machines, too, be sure to pack it.

Travel Crib or Travel Bassinet

Your hotel might have these. You could also rent them through a service like Baby Quip . If you have to buy, this travel baby crib from Amazon is well-rated and affordable.

Crib or Bassinet Sheet

Whether you’re renting or bringing your own, make sure you have the proper sheet to fit your crib or bassinet mattress.

Pro Tip: Bring one from home that has been used recently; One that smells like your home, not detergent. It could help your baby sleep more comfortably in a foreign place.

Swaddle or Sleep Sack

Dane and I forgot Luca’s sleep sack on our first trip with him and he was not happy, lol. It’s part of his bedtime routine, so we had trouble getting him down without it. Lesson learned!

Don’t make the same mistake. Be sure your bring anything and everything your baby needs to go to sleep comfortably.

Baby Monitor

If your baby will be sleeping in a different room, and you’re used to having them on a monitor, make sure you bring one.

This is a big reason why we chose the Nanit Baby Monitor – you can easily travel with it if you have the proper accessories.

If your baby takes a pacifier, you’ll want to bring a few. Especially if they’re particular and won’t just take whatever pacifier you can get your hands on.

A picture of baby travel essentials including sunscreen, Tubby Todd all over ointment, baby body wash, lotion, and more.

Baby Wash, Shampoo, and Lotion

If your baby’s skin is tolerant, you can get away with buying whatever travel-sized baby toiletries your local Target has in stock.

But if your baby’s skin is sensitive, I recommend buying refillable bottles and packing whatever they’re used to. That way you don’t have any issues!

If your kiddo has hair, of course. 😉

Antibacterial Wet Wipes

Babies have weak immune systems, so it’s important to try to combat germs as best as you can during a family trip.

I like to keep antibacterial wet wipes in my bag to clean my hands, Luca’s hands, and things within his reach. Not only does this help keep baby safe, it’ll help keep you sane. The only thing worse than a sick baby is a sick baby while on vacation.

One pack is fine! Add this to the list of things you can buy once you reach your destination if you need extras.

Diaper Cream

Diaper rash is so uncomfortable for babies and can make them super cranky. That said, if you want to enjoy your vacation be sure to have plenty of rash cream on hand.

We like Aquaphor Baby because it’s so multifaceted. It soothes dry skin and eczema in addition to diaper rash.

Inflatable Tub

You don’t really realize how helpful a baby bathtub is until you don’t have one. The few times Dane and I have tried to bathe Luca in a regular tub, it’s taken all of our hands…and all of our energy, lol.

So for travel we invested in a super affordable inflatable baby bath from Amazon. That way we can comfortably contain Luca while we bathe him. And if our hotel room only has a shower, we don’t have to try to stuff him in the sink.

Diaper Bag and Changing Pad

I strongly prefer the changing pads that hold everything you need for changing baby’s diaper – wipes, rash cream, etc. – so you can unroll and go. You don’t have to dig!

Disposable Diapers or Cloth Diapers

Just fit what you can, and buy what you can’t later.

If you plan on swimming, swimmers are a must!

PS: I have an entire post about baby beach gear . If you’re going on a beach trip, be sure to check it out!

Disposable Diaper Bags

If you’re planning plane travel, these are a must. These disposable diaper bags allow for easy clean up and let you put your baby’s dirty diapers in the trash without the risk of smelling up the restroom or entire plane.

Baby’s skin is extra sensitive to UV rays, so don’t forget their sunscreen !

Stain Remover

Stain remover , because it’s important to get stains out of clothes sooner than later.

First Aid Kit

You can get a comprehensive first aid kit – one with a travel thermometer, nose sucker, nail clippers, etc. – from Target for under $25! Honestly, you probably got one as a baby shower gift . I know I received several!

Other Baby Gear

Baby carrier.

We have the Ergobaby Omni 360 and absolutely love it! It’s adjustable and fits me and Dane well. Luca loves being in it while facing outward, too.

Wet Bags or Plastic Bags

Keep these in your diaper bag for soiled clothes! I prefer these reusable wet bags from Amazon.

Baby Blankets (Especially their favorite blanket!)

If your baby doesn’t have a go-to blanket yet, this baby blanket from Amazon is seriously SO good. It’s so soft can cozy. Luca loves it! He also uses this ivory baby blanket from the same store on repeat.

Travel Stroller and Stroller Bag

When traveling by plane, you’ll have to gate check your stroller. That said, you’ll want a stroller bag to protect it.

Stroller Hook

A stroller hook can hold you purse, diaper bag, and other little things to free up your hands.

Stroller Organizer

I like this stroller organizer because it has two cup holders as well as space for some extras (keys, toys, money, etc.).

Infant Car Seat and Car Seat Bag

If you plan to bring your car seat on a plane, be sure to get a car seat bag . It’ll make it easier for you to carry the car seat, and it’ll protect it if you check it.

Beach Towel

If you’ll be hitting the beach or pool, make sure you have a baby beach towel packed for your kiddo.

Baby tents are great if you plan on spending a lot of time outside during your family vacation. They shield from harmful UV rays and keep baby contained to one safe space.

Portable Fan

I love this stroller fan because you can attach it to virtually anything. Since babies can’t regulate their temperatures until they’re around 1.5-2 years old ( Snuza ), it’s important to keep them cool and comfortable.

A key baby beach essential , a mesh beach bag is easy to travel with and easy to clean.

Toys and Entertainment

Books, teethers, rattles, beach toys and more.

You know your baby best, so I left a bunch of free space on the baby travel packing list printable so you can fill in their favorite toys and forms of entertainment. That way you don’t forget them!

Important Documents

Passport or birth certificate.

A passport is truly only necessary for international travel. However, I read that that airlines can ask for proof of age, especially for lap babies ( The Points Guy ). Because of this, I recommend bringing your baby’s passport or birth certificate with you when traveling domestically.

Insurance Card

*Just in case* you end up having to take a trip to the doctor.

PHEW! If you made it here, congrats, lol. You did it! 😉

While traveling with a baby does require some extra planning and packing, please don’t let that slow you down. It’s important for your entire family to explore new places. And the memories are worth every ounce of effort you’ll have to put in to make it happen!

Whether you’re traveling with a baby for the first time or just needed a thorough baby travel packing list, I really hope this post makes your trip run smoothly!

9 Baby Travel Essentials (+ Baby Packing List!)

Sharing is caring!

Planning to travel with a baby? That first trip with a baby can be a little overwhelming with unknowns of what to pack and the logistics of figuring out how to get it all to your destination.  To help make the process a little easier (and think about what baby registry items you need for those future vacations) we put together a list of baby travel essentials. While this list isn’t too much different from our toddler travel essentials , there are some smaller items that are important to make your trip as seamless as possible.

Keep reading for our baby travel must-haves and a packing list for babies at the end!

Travel Essentials for Baby Toddling Traveler Sunrise

Travel Crib and/or Bassinet

Sleep is so important to babies whether at home or away, and having a good travel crib is one of the top travel essentials for baby. Not sure what to look for in a baby travel crib? The best baby travel cribs are usually lightweight and easy to set up. Our best recommendations for a travel crib for babies are listed below.

  • A regular  pack ‘n play  with a bassinet is a less expensive option for a baby travel crib. They can sometimes be a little too heavy and cumbersome to travel with, but you can typically request a pack ‘n play at your hotel. There’s also a standard pack ‘n play without the bassinet or a deluxe pack ‘n play that includes a travel bassinet.
  • For a lightweight travel crib that’s easy to set up and put way,  this  portable crib is awesome. It has a comfortable memory foam mattress and a zipper on the side to make it easier to get infants in and out.
  • When flying with a baby to your destination,  this lightweight works well. It can take a few more minutes to set up than other options, but it fits easily in a regular suitcase. ( This  option is also a less expensive alternative to the Phil and Ted’s travel crib.)
  • This  travel crib is another great option that we have used as well. It’s a little more expensive than the other options listed, but it’s a travel crib with a bassinet and a removeable changing table as well.

You can also rent a full size crib from BabyQuip here and have it delivered to your destination.

Pro Tip: As your baby gets older, consider using a Snoozeshade or or Slumberpod blackout crib cover. They make the crib dark and baby can’t see you when sharing a room!)

Baby Travel Crib Pack n Play Travel Sound Machine

Travel Bassinet

If you’re traveling with a newborn or younger baby, you may want to consider a baby travel bassinet that you can use both at home and when traveling.  We’ve included some of the best options for a portable bassinet for travel below.

  • This portable bassinet is great for both at home or travel. It’s also large enough for most babies to use up to 6 months or older. (We used it for both of our kiddos for the first four months and traveled often with it.)
  • This super lightweight travel bassinet is great to take outside or anywhere you go.
  • This baby travel bassinet with a sunshade that doubles as a small beach tent for babies as well. (It’s a great option for camping with babies too!)
  • You can find another travel bassinet with a cover to use both at home and for travel here . (Full disclosure, this is the only one we haven’t personally used.)

Travel Stroller For Babies

A baby travel stroller is usually more lightweight and easy to fold up than a traditional travel system. Anything that minimizes the weight and amount of stuff you have will make your life easier, making this one of our top must have items for traveling with a baby. When searching for the best baby travel stroller, be sure to look for something with adequate sunshade that reclines easily for naps on the go. Some of the best baby travel strollers for infants through toddlers are listed below.

  • YoYo Babyzen is lightweight at about 14 lbs, has a one handed fold and can be used from birth up to 40 lbs. One of the major downsides of the YoYo Babyzen is the high price point compared to other travel strollers.
  • GB Pockit+ is a very lightweight travel stroller that folds up small to fit in an overhead bin on airplanes.
  • Mountain Buggy Nano Stroller is another one of the best travel strollers compatible with an infant car seat, and it also has a lie flat option with a “cocoon” cushion. It weighs about 13 lbs and can be used for kids up to 44 lbs.
  • Zoe Traveler stroller is only 11 lbs and can be used for babies 3+ months up to 45 lbs. It also folds up small and can be brought as a carry-on backpack on planes. Zoe also makes one of the lightest double strollers for travel as well. (For $20 off, use my Zoe stroller referral link here .)
  • Summer Infant 3D Light is a more affordable (but still very functional) travel stroller that can be used from 6 months up to 50 lbs. The only downside is that it can’t be used for newborns and is not car seat compatible.

Additional Tips for Choosing a Travel Stroller

  • Be sure to check minimum age recommendations and stroller compatibility with an infant car to ensure it meets your needs. Some travel strollers can be used from birth on, and others have a minimum age requirement of 6+ months.
  • A jogging stroller is another option if you’re planning to bring it on the beach or hiking trails. (The downside is that it’s very heavy.) We’ve also used our Baby Jogger City Select Single to Double Stroller for travel, but the downside is that it’s heavy and the seats have to be taken out to fold it up.
  • If you want a for a double travel stroller for twins or more than one child, side by side strollers are usually the easiest to navigate while traveling. (And they fold up in one piece.) The Zoe double stroller or Summer Infant double stroller are two great options.
  • A car seat frame is an inexpensive alternative if you’re not planning to do a ton of walking. We’ve used this infant car seat stroller frame with both kids over the years. It was definitely one of the best baby registry items we received for everyday use and travel.

Bermuda Cruise Excursions with a Baby Toddling Traveler

Travel High Chair

A travel high chair is another one of the best baby travel items to have.  While it may not always be necessary if you’re just eating at restaurants, it’s especially useful if you’re staying at a vacation home, visiting family or spending time outdoors.

We use this portable high chair on a regular basis, and we keep it in our car for visiting friends or going to some of our favorite kid-friendly breweries. (We also use it at home when eating outside!) While it’s perfect for road trips, it’s a little too bulky to take on flights with a baby.

We also use this clip-on high chair at our home on a daily basis. It only weighs 3 pounds, making it a great baby travel high chair for flying to your destination. The only downside is that it doesn’t work with tables that have a “lip” on them, so you may want to check before arriving at your destination.

Baby Travel Essentals Travel High Chair for Babies

  • Disposable Placemats

While this isn’t one of the pricier baby travel products mentioned above, disposable placements are one of the best baby travel essentials. Most restaurants only offer breakable plates or paper placemats that babies can easily throw. These adhesive placemats stick right on the table and you throw them away after your meal, making cleanup a breeze. (Both of our kids also had a weird habit of wanting to chew on tables when they were teething. So this also covers the end of the table up to prevent extra spreading of germs!)

Baby Carrier

A baby carrier is another one of our top travel must haves for baby. If you want a baby carrier for travel from infant to toddler ages, a soft structured baby carrier like this one is the most versatile we’ve used. Whether you want a carrier for hikes with a baby or something to use on terrain that a stroller can’t reach, it’s perfect for either. It has an infant insert, and we’ve used it as a backpack style toddler carrier as well.

A few options for baby carriers for travel (or everyday use) include:

  • Solly Baby Wrap : Fabric baby wrap that’s especially great for baby wearing in the airport. The Moby baby carrier is a similar alternative.
  • ErgoBaby 360 : All position baby carrier that’s super versatile from newborns to toddlers.
  • LILLEBaby : Another baby carrier with multiple positions from babies to toddlers.

Baby Carrier for Hiking Waterfalls

Diaper Bag For Travel

Whether you’re navigating the airport or the amusement park, the best baby travel bag is typically a hands-free diaper backpack. (And fortunately backpack style diaper bags are super popular right now, so there are many options to choose from!) When searching for the best travel diaper bag, be sure to look for one that comes with a changing pad, a bottle cooler (or space for bottles) and several compartments for storing necessary items in a baby carry-on like snacks and toys.

We have a faux leather diaper backpack similar to this one and have also used our standard travel backpack before.

Travel Bottle Washing Set

You’re bound to be washing bottles or pump parts during your vacation with a baby. (Whether they’re breastfed or bottle fed!) This travel bottle washing set is one of the best baby travel items. It includes a drying rack, and bottle brush in a compact box that closes. It also makes a unique baby registry idea if you’re looking for items the mom to be may not have thought of.

Pro Tip: Be sure to also bring a small travel bottle of dish detergent with you. We just use reusable travel toiletry bottles and fill them up with our standard free and clear dish soap.

  • Sound Machine

Aside from a good travel crib, a sound machine is another item on our list of travel essentials with baby that helps the whole family sleep. Sound machines help keep their routine consistent at home and away, and they drown out noises if you’re sharing a room with a baby on vacation. There are a variety of options for baby sound machines depending on how much room you have in your luggage.

  • A standard baby sound machine that’s lightweight and still easy to pack without taking up too much space. (We use this portable sound machine at home and away.)
  • A small travel sound machine for a stroller or on-the-go is another option. We have this one .
  • There are also several sound machine apps available on your phone. We use the Guva free sound machine app for babies that also allows you to record a sound as well. (I even recorded myself shushing to help our second child fall asleep for naps.)

Baby Toys and Teethers

Babies are constantly chewing and dropping things.  So we recommend a variety of baby travel toys and teethers for your trip with a baby. A few baby travel items we don’t leave home without include:

  • A multi-sensory baby toy that can be clipped on a stroller or car seat.
  • Several teethers and different pacifiers (if your baby uses one.)
  • A lovey or stuffed animal that your baby uses for comfort.
  • A simple, small toy like these stacking cups to use at your destination.
  • An interactive book with flaps or different textures. (Shop my Usborne Books & More storefront for ideas!)

Pro tip: Bring a Ziploc bag for dirty toys that need to be cleaned at your destination. (Especially if you’re traveling with a baby on an airplane and they drop toys.)

Romper Registry

These products have been vetted by parenting editors and moms to help you truly enjoy venturing out with your new baby.

Not only do people tell you to get out and enjoy the world with your baby, but sometimes it’s really what you need, too: a change of scenery, a little stroll through Aldi, going to your favorite coffee shop so all the baristas who said you were glowing during pregnancy can now see your real live baby — it’s a big deal. To make sure you feel confident in those first outings as a new mom, we’ve curated this edition of Romper Registry to help you find the editor-tested (and real-mom-approved) essentials for getting out of the house with your baby.

In testing and choosing these products below, we asked ourselves: What is most overwhelming about taking your baby out for the first time? What are new parents worried about? What would make them feel confident and empowered and leave them coming home proud of themselves (if, yes, thoroughly exhausted)? What kind of items will make them say, “Hey! I did it! I took my baby out!” — and make them want to try it again?

We’ve considered that travel systems for strollers can make you nervous and that your own postpartum body has the potential to wreak havoc in Target. (Those boob leaks are not talked about enough.) We’ve looked at bottles and pacifiers and all of the tiny baby gear items you know you need, but are unsure how to store in a way that doesn’t make you feel like you’re packing for a trek through the mountains. We’ve thought about all the things that could happen during your first outing with baby — a diaper blowout, a fussy infant who won’t nap, a phone battery dying — and found the solution for you.

Whether you feel icky yourself (I’ve got the best lipstick for you and must-have undies to hold in those postpartum pads) or are just stressed about not having something your baby needs (wet bags and the perfect baby outfit on deck), this list has you covered.

The baby travel essentials

A Super Easy Car Seat & Stroller Combo

Car Seat & Stroller

Travel with babies — even if the “trip” is just to the grocery store — is overwhelming, and a lot of it has to do with THE GEAR. Are you taking the car seat into Target? Are you using a stroller? Save yourself some brain power and consider the Doona car seat and stroller combo . The actual car seat your baby sits in turns into a stroller with the push of a button — so you don’t need a stroller frame — and it’s just one motion to get the whole thing locked in place (while never having to disturb your baby).

Other systems involve removing a car seat from the car and locking it into a separate stroller base, but the Doona is literally all in one — the stroller folds back up into the car seat and it reattaches into the base in your car whenever you’re ready to go. And while there are plenty of great car seat/stroller options (we’ve recommended one of those for you, too), this is a great choice for new parents who are nervous about the clicking and unclicking and folding and stowing.

An Easy-To-Fold, Easy-To-Use Stroller

Single-to-Double Stroller 2.0

While we recommend the Doona for its convenient all-in-one car seat/stroller combo, the Mockingbird Stroller is a great option for parents who want an easy-to-fold option for longer trips, especially if you’re taking baby in and out of the stroller. It can easily be switched from single to double if you’re hoping for more kids in the future, and it folds up like a dream with just one hand — you will absolutely look like a pro in the Target parking lot. Our favorite part? You can also fold it up like that at home to store in a closet or in a garage.

A Bassinet For Your Mockingbird Stroller

Stroller Bassinet

And while you have that easy-to-fold stroller, you might as well complete the set with the Mockingbird Stroller Bassinet . It gives baby a perfect spot to rest flat on their back and snooze as you push them along, and once you’re home, you can transfer the bassinet from the stroller into a bassinet stand in your home and let baby finish out their nap. It’s such a great, convenient way to take the comfort of home out with you, and to ensure that you and your baby feel safe and secure on your outing.

A Roomy Stroller Organizer

Clearly we’re big fans of Mockingbird — their designs solve problems before they even crop up. Case in point: this parent organizer for your stroller. You’ll do a whole lot of fussing over where to store baby’s things and how to easily access baby bottles and pacifiers and outfit changes. But in order to enjoy a day out, you need your things organized, too. This organizer clips onto your stroller handles (it’s a pretty universal fit), and holds a wealth of stuff. It does have two insulated spots for drinks, as well as a zippered pouch on the front where you can store your keys, phone, wallet, and other necessities. The larger part on top can also be used for baby things that you don’t want to dig for, like a pacifier or maybe a bottle and formula just waiting to mix.

A Baby Carrier You Can Totally Put On Yourself

Omni 360 Baby Carrier

Baby carriers come in so many varieties and types that it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all of the options. Believe me, I have tried them all. After three babies, I swear by the Ergobaby Omni 360 Carrier for everyone, but especially new parents. Not only is it comfy for your infant and does all the right things for their hips and back (and yours), but it’s also the easiest carrier to put on yourself and then get baby all safe and secure. Trust me — you can do it. And soon you’ll be doing it in the grocery store without a second thought and everyone will marvel at you. It’s kind of the best feeling.

A Portable Sound Machine For Easy Snoozing

Hatch Rest Go Portable Sound Machine

One thing I truly love about taking newborns and little babies out is that they fall asleep easily. The movement of the car or the stroller or you carrying them is usually enough to get them snoozing. But sometimes even the best sleepers need extra help. The Hatch Rest Go Portable sound machine creates a soothing layer of sound that will help dull any loud noises and soothe a fussy infant. If you have a Hatch at home already, you’re familiar with this brand and why it’s a parenting favorite, but the portable version is a literal lifesaver for many parents. A full charge will make it last for a few days, and it’s small enough to clip onto strollers, car seats, or even your baby carrier. This particular model comes with 10 sounds, and here’s the best part: the sound always starts low and gradually increases when you turn it on, so you don’t have to worry about crashing waves blaring out of your hand and startling your sleeping babe.

A Powerful Mini Fan

RYOBI ONE+ 18V Cordless 4-inch Clamp Fan

If you search “stroller fan,” you will find tons of options, but I already know exactly what you need: this RYOBI cordless clamp fan . They say that circulating air is great for babies in general, so this will be useful regardless of the season. During the summer, though, this is key for keeping babies safe and cool. If you have them tucked snugly into a bassinet stroller or have a sunshade covering them, a fan can really help keep the air moving. And this RYOBI one, like all RYOBI products, holds a charge forever (up to 40 hours) and is truly lightweight, even with the battery attached. You can easily clamp it onto a stroller handle, it has two speed settings, and the head can be rotated to direct the air exactly where you want it to go.

A Wristlet Changing Pad & Essentials

Pronto Signature Changing Station

The first few times you try to pack a bag with everything you could possibly need for your baby during an outing, it will be deeply overwhelming. Over time you’ll develop a system (trust me), but let me recommend this shortcut: the Skip Hop Pronto Signature Changing Station . It looks like a stylish clutch, but inside it has a wipes case (that’s see-through, so you know when it needs refilling), a detachable changing pad you can wipe clean, and space for up to four diapers and creams. There’s even an ideal spot for your phone and keys. This pops easily into bigger bags when you’re traveling or need more stuff, but if you want to grab a coffee and take the baby, just throw this on your wrist and head out the door — you could even shove a onesie in here if you fold it up.

A Protective Shade For The Car

Extra Wide Car Window Shade

It doesn’t have to be a hot day for the sun to make its way through your car windows and irritate a fussy baby — and truly there is nothing more stressful than a crying baby in the backseat while you’re driving. Enter the Dreambaby Extra Wide Car Window Shade . This fits all windows with suction cups and can be rolled up or down to whatever size you need — plus, you can easily pop them off if you’re moving the car seat to another spot/car, and they’re easily stored on days you don’t want the shade up. This is basically like putting sunglasses on the window, and whether it’s blazing summer or bright winter sun, they’re sure to make the travel portion of taking your baby out a little less stressful.

A Fun Tent For Shady Tummy Time

Babymoov Anti-UV Tent with Sun Protection

Whether you’re heading to the grandparents’ backyard or the local park with your baby, this Babymoov tent is exceptionally handy. It pops up in no time and has UV protection to keep those scary sun rays away from your little one’s skin. Since babies under 6 months can’t wear sunscreen , this is a great option for enjoying the sunshine and breeze without panicking. It’s also small and compact enough to take with you if you’re going to enjoy a picnic or head to the zoo and want to make sure you and baby both have some shade to rest under.

An Adorable Set Of Packing Cubes To Keep You Organized

Itzy Ritzy Packing Cubes Set of 3

It doesn’t matter how great your diaper bag is or how organized you are, you’re always going to need one more compartment. I am obsessed with these packing cubes from Itzy Ritzy. Not only are they so cute, but they’re also the perfect size for throwing into your car, your diaper bag, or even a bigger duffel bag if you’re traveling far with baby. No more rummaging in the bottom of the beach bag for the diaper cream; you have a cube stashed in there with a diaper, wipes, and even a change of clothes just in case.

A Soft, Outdoor Blanket

Outdoor Blanket

Look, you don’t have to make your first outing with your baby super overwhelming; sometimes all you can muster is a walk down to the mailbox. And that’s OK! But if you’re hoping to sit and enjoy the great outdoors with your baby, whether it’s a big green area in your town or just a patch of grass by the brewery, the Little Unicorn outdoor blanket is a great piece of gear to take with you. Available in three different sizes, these blankets are not only adorable but they’re also durable and water resistant. (This means they also make a great impromptu tablecloth or bench cover if you’re somewhere a little grody.) The blanket folds up into its little portable pouch, so you literally just unfold it with nothing to stuff back in or take out, and they are great to just throw down wherever you are.

An Activity For Big Bro or Sis

Mickey & Minnie Birthday Train

If you're leaving the house with a new baby *and* their older sibling, might we recommend an age-appropriate toy for the toddler crowd? Even if you don't take this whole 22-piece LEGO® DUPLO® playset along for the outing, your 2 year-old (or older ) is sure to love choosing their favorite pieces from a 3-part train, beloved Disney characters, a birthday cake, number bricks, and accessories.

A Sturdy Car Seat Mirror

Baby Car Seat Mirror

The first couple of times you drive with your baby will be nerve-wracking — it’s a huge source of anxiety for new parents, and with good reason. While you may still be a little “eek” about being in the front seat and operating a large piece of machinery with your precious bundle in the backseat, a good car seat mirror can help. Not all car seat mirrors are created equal, however; this one from KeaBabies is excellent. It is nice and sturdy, with two buckles to keep it from slipping or falling off the headrest, and it also has a wide angle so you won’t be craning your neck to check the baby. The mirror can also be easily rotated once it’s clipped in, so you’ll get just the right angle.

A Cute Wet Bag *Just In Case*

Travel Happens Reusable Sealed Wet Bag

Here’s the thing about being postpartum — you expect baby messes, but you also have to be aware of you messes. Things happen, breasts leak, formula gets spilled, you sweat straight through the baby carrier — it’s all incredibly normal. But that’s why we’re recommending the Itzy Ritzy Reusable Wet Bag . Wet bag was not an item I heard about until I had kids, and now I think they’re genius and everyone should own one, even if you don’t have babies. This cotton bag is lined with a thick BPA-free and PVC-free material to keep any kind of wet item — from spit-up-soaked clothes to blowout-stained onesies — from getting all over everything else in your diaper bag. With the heavy-duty zipper, all of the wetness (and the smells, let’s be real) stay firmly locked in place so that you can deal with it when you get home. No worrying about shoving dirty pajamas or ruined burp cloths into plastic bags — just dump this wet bag straight into the washer when you get home and have it all ready for the next outing.

A Car Seat Accessory To Keep Germs Away

Peg Perego Visor Car Seat

One of the biggest worries parents have when taking their newborn out is other people getting too close or too touchy-feely with the babe. It’s stressful and can make you feel icky, which is where this car seat visor comes in handy. We don’t recommend driving with it on, but if you pop your baby’s car seat into a grocery cart or a stroller, the visor offers a nice layer of protection. It pops right into place and is see-through, so you don’t have to worry about baby being in the dark, and it also doesn’t cover the whole area, so there’s plenty of air circulation and breathing room. It’s just like a nice “do not disturb” sign.

A Stylish Backpack

Levy Diaper Backpack — Black Herringbone

I’m a big believer in “less is more” when it comes to diaper bags, but I also know that one major thing about taking your baby out and building confidence in doing so is knowing that you are covered in every possible situation. Extra baby clothes, extra bottles, extra diapers — all the things can fit easily into the Levy Diaper Bag Backpack . Not only does it have tons of compartments, but it’s also a backpack that is easy to sling on. Plus it’s cute . It’s also a nice size to clip onto your stroller or stow underneath, and the entire main compartment lays flat when you open it so that you can see everything instead of digging blindly into a Mary Poppins valise. The best.

Essentials to keep your baby happy

A Perfect Outfit For Baby

Zippy

You no doubt already have plenty of gorgeous outfits for your baby, from frilly dresses to tiny little polo shirts and matching shorts. But when you’re taking baby out, you want to feel confident in their comfort, and that’s why we recommend the Little Sleepies Zippy . Not only does this perfect little one-piece feel like jammies while still looking like an adorable outfit, the fabric is a luxury bamboo that’s nice and breathable. It comes in tons of colors and patterns (and plenty of sizes!), and it has both fold-over mittens and fold-over feet. The fabric’s also nice and stretchy so you get lots of wear out of it, and you don’t have to worry about anything bunching up under car seat straps or in the stroller or carrier while you’re out and about. (Bonus: if you’re into bows, there are matching ones for the Little Sleepies Zippys.)

A Light, Wearable Blanket

Organic Cotton Gauze Wearable Blanket

Whether your baby wears a sleep sack or a swaddle at home, it helps to have something to mimic that if you want them to nap while you’re on the go. Many babies are adept at snoozing in the stroller without any accessories, but if you want one — especially if you’re heading to a friend or relative’s house for a longer visit — this organic cotton gauze wearable blanket is fantastic. It’s nice and light and can be rolled up into your diaper bag, but it’s also still soothing enough to make baby feel comfy and cozy in the stroller. It’s also a great option if it’s a little cool out, but you don’t want to use a blanket or anything loose on top of them in their bassinet or stroller.

A Sweet Little Sunhat For Babe

Sunsafe Swim Hat — Peppa Pig

Babies under 6 months of age can’t wear sunscreen, so protecting your babe from the elements on your outings is a must. Unlike a lot of sunhats, the Mori Sunsafe Hat is so soft, and doesn’t have any big flaps to get in the way of baby’s comfort or that weird plastic vibe on the outside that just doesn’t feel great on soft baby skin. It also boasts a UPF of 50, and the flap on the back keeps baby’s neck covered if you’re carrying or walking with them outside of their stroller. It folds up easily to stash in a stroller or diaper bag for permanent storage, so you’re never caught outside without it.

A Set Of Soft, Easy Bibs

Baby Bandana Bibs — Bailey

If your child is prone to spitting up or excessive drool, a pack of these soft bandana bibs from Copper Pearl is a must. Throw these in your bag for your first big outing so that you know you can protect baby’s outfit or keep that sticky formula spit-up out of their sweet little neck folds. These come in a pack of four and are unbelievably soft. I’ve never loved the look of big old bibs, but these almost look like a cute accessory for any outfit, and they also work well to just have on hand as a napkin to sop up boob leaks or the little bits of milk that dribble out of the corners of their mouth as they fall asleep.

A Pack Of Easy-To-Change Bodysuits

Baby 5-Pack Farm Animal Bodysuits

Whether you’ve got an easy outfit on baby already or one of their fancier looks, going out for the day (heck, even the hour) means you need a backup outfit in your diaper bag. The Carter's baby bodysuits come in a sweet pack of five featuring plenty of gender-neutral patterns and colors with these adorable farm animals. Over time, I’ve come to realize that few bodysuits are as good as Carter’s. They have that big stretchy shoulder-neck thing so that you can take messy outfits down baby’s legs instead over their heads, potentially spreading poop on their hair or onto their face ( shudder ), and they fold down so tightly, they’ll even fit into a compact diaper bag. Keep a couple of extra bodysuits stuffed in the car and stroller organizer, just in case.

A Super Cute Pacifier Clip

Eric Carle Beaded Pacifier Clip

I have tried so many pacifier clips, but the LOU LOU LOLLIPOP ones are the absolute best. They attach easily, but not so easily that they’ll be ripped off by your baby or pinch their perfect little fingers. They’re made of food-grade silicone, so they’re also safe if your little one gets them in their mouth or chews on the beads a bit. And they’re cute. We managed to keep one clipped into our car seat, as well as on our stroller straps so that we always had a paci ready to go. Throw one in your diaper bag or clip to your own shirt if you want to carry baby, and you’ll know the pacifier’s secure and ready to go.

A Super Light Silicone Pacifier

Ultra Light Silicone Pacifier 2-Pack

There are a billion types of pacifiers out there (and that’s my conservative estimate), but all three of my daughters loved the Tommee Tippee ultra-light silicone pacis , and we’ve never had a single issue. I like that they don’t have the little plastic ring (which can potentially break off), nor do they have any painted designs that could flake or chip away. The whole pacifier is made of silicone, and I swear, these things will actually bounce in a way that doesn’t require you on your hands and knees looking for them — they’re just there. The silicone itself is medical grade and 100% BPA free, and even if you pop it in baby’s mouth upside down, the nipple is still the right shape and design for their mouth. You can also easily use the open holes on the side for pacifier clips, and they’re small enough to pop into any pacifier case or diaper bag.

A Case To Keep Your Pacis Clean

Itzy Ritzy Pod Duo Pacifier Holder

Pacifiers are basically gold nuggets when you have a fussy newborn who finds them soothing, especially when you’re out and about. But the minute one of them falls to the filthy floor of the tire shop lobby, they’re instant dead weight. This sleek little pacifier case clips onto your bag or stroller so one is always in reach, but it also has two sides so you can pop a dirty paci in one end and know that the other side has a clean one ready to go. This case will tide you over until you eventually become one of those parents who just licks the pacifier clean and pops it into your baby’s mouth.

A Pack Of The Cutest Baby Socks

Unisex 10-Pack Ankle Socks for Baby

You just know that somebody, somewhere, is going to point out that your baby’s feet “must be freezing” without any socks, so go ahead and toss a pack of the Old Navy baby socks in your bag. We’ve tried a million socks, but these are my favorite because they are so ridiculously soft (and stay soft, despite multiple washes), come in tons of patterns and colors, and are stretchy enough at the cuff to stay up on baby’s leg/foot all day long. And bonus: if you do happen to lose one or two (I mean, it’s bound to happen), these are budget-friendly so you can just keep another pack in the diaper bag at all times.

A Super Cute Hat For Any Weather

Top Knot Beanie

Much like baby socks, you need a little baby beanie in your diaper bag at all times, lest someone accuse you of letting all the heat from your baby’s skull travel out into the world. The adorable top knot beanie from LouLou Lollipop is nice and light, but does an excellent job of regulating baby’s body temperature so you don’t have to worry about them getting too hot or too cold. Also these top knot beanies have the perfect amount of stretch, so if your baby has a large head, don’t fear — these will keep all the worriers at Target from stressing you out.

A Super Soft, Breathable Swaddle Blanket

Cotton Muslin Swaddles 4-Pack — Disney + Friends

No parent escapes the early-baby stage without acquiring an embarrassment of baby blankets. You’ve no doubt already got velcro swaddles and zippered sleep sacks and heirloom quilts. But hands down the most useful blanket is a light, breathable muslin swaddle. And the Aden + Anais cotton muslin swaddle has earned cult-level loyalty from parents. You can use them to cover baby on a warm day, drape them as a nursing cover, rig one up as a shade, and yes, use them to swaddle baby in their stroller. They clean up messes, work as picnic blankets or napkins, and act as changing pads in a pinch. They wash easily and dry quickly. They come in the four-packs, so you can stash them all over the place to grab whenever you need, and the patterns and designs are so good.

A Cozy Outfit To Impress Grandma

Baby Striped Ribbed Matching Set

OK, I know, you already have the perfect outfit for baby and you’ve got extra, easy-to-wear bodysuits in case of disaster, but if you want your baby to look a little fancy while still being cozy, this ribbed set from Janie and Jack is just the ticket. It’s soft enough that baby won’t fuss while in the car seat or stroller, but also cute enough to impress grandma. The little pockets are just the best, and I love imagining what a newborn might shove into them. Add a sweet little hat and you’ve got a jaunty, comfy look for baby.

A Sweet Little Soft & Fancy Outfit

Baby Striped Crochet Romper

You know, half the fun of having a baby is dressing them up, so we must also recommend a really cute outfit, like this cozy and soft striped crochet romper from Janie and Jack. If you’re really feeling excited about Baby’s Day Out and want your little one to look her very best, this is the outfit she needs. It’s light enough and soft enough for baby skin while still looking cute enough to show off to everyone who’s been waiting to see your babe. (You know that cashier at Target is wondering where you’ve been.) You can even pair it with leggings and a sweater if you need additional layers.

A Spill-Proof Bottle

MAM Easy Start Matte Anti-Colic Bottles 2-Pack

There are so many reasons to have a great pack of bottles on hand, whether you’re breastfeeding or formula feeding. Sometimes you want pumped milk so someone else can feed baby, maybe you’re combo-feeding and need some easy to clean bottles that will make that process easier. The MAM Easy Start Anti-Colic Bottles are a great option for on-the-go. Even if your baby doesn’t experience a lot of gas or spit-up with their regular feedings, feeding baby when you’re out and about can mean a bottle that sloshes around in the diaper bag or holding a bottle to your baby’s mouth while walking them through a store. These anti-colic bottles can reduce the bubbles that form, and the nipple also flattens like the nipple of a breast when baby is actively nursing.

An Easy-To-Use Formula Dispenser

Munchkin Formula Dispenser

There are tons of different formula dispensers out there, but I personally love this Munchkin formula dispenser for when you’re on-the-go. With three divisions, you can pour in enough formula to make three 9-ounce bottles, and the little flexible seal makes sure to keep the other sections full as you empty one. You don’t have to worry about spillage in your diaper bag, and unlike so many containers, this one pours like a dream, so the formula will go straight from the dispenser into the bottle. No spill, no cloud of formula dust, no food lost.

A Stash Of Diapers That Won’t Leak

Pampers Swaddlers 164-Count

You need diapers. Shocking, I know. As you get more comfortable and confident in taking baby out, you’ll be able to judge more accurately exactly how many you need. But above all, we recommend you shove a stack of Pampers Swaddlers into your diaper bag for baby outings. Swaddlers truly do not leak and I think they’re ideal for babies who aren’t on the move just yet. They also are super absorbent, so if it takes you longer to change a soiled diaper, you don’t have to worry that your baby’s going to be soaked or covered in a fiery red rash.

A Pack Of Gentle Baby Wipes

Pampers Free & Gentle Baby Wipes 156-Count

Newborn poops and messes are not for the faint of heart. The Pampers Free & Gentle Wipes can literally pick up hunks of curdled milk off of a car seat without leaving a trace behind, and for that reason alone, I will always keep a stash in my car and in my bag. These wipes are plant-based and plastic-free with 0% alcohol or dyes, and best of all, these puppies are thick .

A Super-Soothing Diaper Ointment

Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment

Just in case of drool irritation, spilled milk in the neck folds, or diaper rashes, throw a tube of the Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment in your bag as you head out the door, too. This stuff is fantastic, and honestly, it would probably work great on any of your own itchy, irritated, or inflamed skin. If you notice your baby has some dry patches or needs a little relief, just dab a bit of this on and let it live in the diaper bag forever so you never have to be without it.

travel essentials for mom too

A Nice Water Bottle

Hydro Flask All Around Travel Tumbler 32-Ounce

I know, it feels like the absolute height of consumerism to be like, “You need this special water bottle,” but take it from me — it’s necessary. When you’re gearing up to spend the day out with baby, whether it’s for a 30-minute walk or an all-day excursion, hydration is key, especially when you’re still dealing with major postpartum changes. (And Lord, the hormonal hot flashes.) So invest in the Hydro Flask All Around Travel Tumbler with Flex Straw . This baby holds a ton of water, is cute, fits into every stroller cup holder I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried a lot), and the best part — it doesn’t spill. So whether you need to shove it into your diaper bag or wedge it into the basket of the stroller, it’s going to stay full and everything else will stay dry. The straw is also bendy at the top so you don’t have to do that giraffe neck thing to get a sip of water. Look at you with your water bottle, going outside with your new baby! You’re doing it!

A Perfect, Leak-Proof Coffee Thermos

Contigo Byron Vacuum-Insulated Stainless Steel Leak-Proof Travel Mug 2-Pack

I would testify in court that this is the absolute best travel coffee mug in the entire world. The Contigo Byron Vacuum-Insulated travel mugs have been in my cabinet for four years now and they are perfection. They keep your coffee piping hot for hours (literally), I’ve dropped them in the middle of soccer fields without a single spill, and the design is pleasingly simple — it’s just a screw-on lid with minimal nooks and crannies for gunk to grow. When you take your baby out for that first walk or to head into town to your first mom group, go ahead and fill this bad boy up with your coffee of choice and you’ll be able to sip on it freely without worrying about it spilling over your baby, going cold, or being a nuisance to carry around.

A Nursing Bra That Won’t Make You Feel Frumpy

Simply Sublime Nursing Bra

Look, there are nursing bras and then there is the Kindred Bravely Simply Sublime Nursing Bra . This nursing bra doesn’t give you that dreaded mono-boob or leave you fussing with ill fitting straps; it’s easy to open up to nurse your baby, but actually holds your breasts like a real bra does and gives you the shape you want and the comfort you really want. It’s wire-free, but comes in tons of inclusive sizes so you don’t have to worry that it isn’t going to hold up your boobs. And yes, it has the hook and eye closure — no getting stuck with your arm pinned to your head and your engorged boobs leaking all over the place here. It’s perfection.

A Comfy, Won’t-Ride-Up, Fits-Your-Body-Well Pair Of Undies

All-In Panty Multi-Pack

I’ve bought maternity undies, I’ve bought postpartum undies, I’ve bought thongs, I’ve bought shapewear — but the Bodily All-In Panty is hands down my favorite underwear. The high-waisted, soft, and stretchy undies are meant to fit you through pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond, but these aren’t the kind of undergarments you feel silly wearing when your kid’s reaching toddlerhood. They’re that good, and they are perfect for holding those ice packs and pads if you’re still feeling tender or worried about bleeding through your undies on your first outing with baby. They’re also super cozy for sleeping and just lounging around the house, so get yourself the five-pack so you’re never without a pair. (Maybe even two of those packs so you can ignore the laundry a little longer.)

A Pack Of Postpartum Pads That Will Actually Keep You Mess-Free

Frida Mom Postpartum Catch-All Pads

Going out after baby means feeling fully prepared to handle the continuous bleeding and shedding as you push a stroller through Starbucks. Enter the Frida Mom Postpartum Catch-All Pads . These things are nice and big, but don’t feel like a diaper in your pants, and they literally catch it all. I’ve had plenty of leaks and “accidents” with other pads while on my period or postpartum, but never with these catch-all pads. They’re also great for urine leaks and sweat because let me tell you, nobody prepares you for the postpartum sweat either. Keep a stack of these at home and throw a few in your diaper bag so you can feel fresh and clean while you enjoy your big day out.

A Nipple Cream For Any Aches & Pains

Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream

People love to tell you breastfeeding doesn’t hurt — and once you really get the hang of it, that’s mostly true — but the beginning can be rough. There are scratchy little newborn nails at your breast and scabbing on your nipples as baby learns how to suckle. The Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream is the gold standard for soothing those injuries and speeding up healing, plus it’s safe for baby’s mouth. A tube of this in your diaper bag will be your friend when you’re out and about.

A Cuty & Comfy Postpartum Dress

Fit & Flare Cami Midi Dress

One thing that was a shock for me after having babies was how much my body was not ready for anything restrictive. Finding things I felt good in that were also easy to wear, could handle the many postpartum challenges like extra sweating, and were also good for breastfeeding was a major priority to me with my third baby, and I swear by this fit and flare cami midi dress from Old Navy. In comes in several colors and is a dream to wear. You can dress it up or down; you can wear it with heels or sneakers; you can breastfeed in it; you can wear a baby carrier over it (it won’t bunch of pull in weird ways); and it’s just perfect for those postpartum days when don’t want to sacrifice comfort for vanity. This style will make you feel put together, even if you just throw your hair in a bun and run out the door.

A Perfect Pair Of Shoes For You

The Starling — Navy Raffia

You really don’t think about “easy” shoes until you have kids and then suddenly, you need shoes that will do a bunch of things. They need to be easy to put on, they need to handle all kinds of terrain and weather, they need to be comfy enough to stand in while rocking babies, and they need to be cute. Nobody wants to swap out shoes for different outfits while you’re tending to a newborn, and that’s why you need the Starling flats from Birdies. Wearing leggings? These will work. Want that cute Old Navy dress? Throw these on. Need something that can handle pacing the sidewalks with a coffee in hand? Birdies are the way to go. These shoes are so comfortable and cute, but can also be popped on while you’re cradling your baby and a diaper bag. Also, postpartum sweat is a real thing, but never once have my Birdies had a smell to them, despite wearing them without socks. You’re welcome.

A Portable Hand Sanitizer For Every Spot

Eucalyptus Spearmint PocketBac Hand Sanitizers 5-Pack

Germs are terrifying when you’re a new mom — and they’re everywhere. But one way to keep yourself from losing your mind every time you leave the house is to stash these mini PocketBac hand sanitizers from Bath & Body Works everywhere. These come in a pack of five and you can drop one in a diaper bag, leave one in the car, tuck one into the stroller or baby carrier — wherever you want. Then you know you always have one handy, and you can even pick your favorite scents from Bath & Body Works so that something as clinical and boring as hand sanitizer is actually a fun little treat.

A Reliable Portable Charger

Anker Portable Charger Power Bank

You can remember every piece of gear for your baby, but nothing will ruin an outing faster than realizing your battery is at 3%. Popping the Anker Portable Charger Power Bank into your diaper bag or stroller can make you feel a little less anxious about getting stranded somewhere without a phone. I mean, how else are you going to document every single moment about this big milestone? This charger is slim and durable, and it holds 2.25 full charges for your phone. Just make sure whichever power bank you choose from Anker is compatible with your phone.

A Perfect Pair Of Earbuds

Google Pixel Buds A-Series

If you’re taking baby on a legit walk or just a little breeze up and down the street, you should throw the Google Pixel Buds A-Series in your bag. These bad boys last forever on a charge, and you can charge the case itself while you’re using them. They also have a tap-to-control feature if you need to pause your music or answer a call, and they work with Google to give you answers right in your ear if you’re suddenly wondering how long babies should sleep in their strollers. It’s also just nice to have them nearby so that you can be hands-free as you push your baby’s stroller and chat with your mom about all the new things you’ve already discovered about motherhood.

An Entertainment Companion For You

Kindle

You know, screentime for you is a thing, too. And while it’s easy to lose yourself in Instagram Reels for the entirety of a nap, you might not feel so great at the end of that hour of scrolling. So grab yourself a Kindle and throw it in the bag on your way out to enjoy the sunshine with your baby. It’s so much easier than carrying around a big heavy book, and nobody will know what smut you’re reading at the dentist or sitting outside of Starbucks. A Kindle is also a must in the diaper bag if you realize your baby has fallen asleep in the car seat and you’re too terrified to attempt a crib or bassinet transfer. (Been there.) And you know what else? You can totally hold a Kindle in one hand while breastfeeding or rocking your babe. Trust.

A Dry Shampoo To Help You Feel Put Together

Volumizing Rice Protein Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo might be my favorite beauty invention of all time, especially the KITSCH Volumizing Rice Protein Dry Shampoo . When this thing says “volumizing,” it 1000% means volumizing . My hair is diabolical with this stuff — she literally grows her own brain and everything — and it’s just so, so good. It makes me feel like I got a blow-out, and if I use some dry shampoo and then give it a blast with my blow dryer brush? Well, then nobody can tell me nothin’ after that. This is a great option for postpartum hair, too, and all those little flyaways and to help volumize the bits you have left.

An All-In-One Hair Dyer For Busy Mornings

Hairitage Up in the Air Volumizing Brush + Hair Dryer

I truly hate the idea that once you have kids you have zero time to do the hair and skin and makeup routine you actually want to do, but like... sometimes you do have to cut corners to get out of the door. The Hairitage Up in the Air Volumizing Brush + Hair Dryer is such an incredible hair tool, and when I tell you it gives me tons of volume (even on those pesky, wispy postpartum hairs), I mean it. I have super thick hair, so the idea of washing it, blow drying it, styling it, and then leaving the house? It’s just not happening. But here’s my hack for this tool: fill your pre-washed hair with dry shampoo and then run this bad boy through it. You’ll still get that blow-out feel, but you won’t be trying to do it while jiggling a baby bouncer with your foot.

An Adorable Hair Claw

Deli Sandwich Hair Claw

Look, postpartum hair is a whole thing. You might have tiny little wispy parts by your temples and you might lose a lot of it in chunks. Maybe you’ll find that the postpartum night sweats have made it greasy, or that it suddenly has some weird wave to it that wasn’t there pre-pregnancy. It’s a whole thing, and that’s why you need some adorable hair accessories. I’m particularly obsessed with the Jenny Lemons Deli Sandwich Hair Claw because of how desperate I was for cold cuts and a non-toasted ultimate sub during my pregnancies. Pay a little homage to the subs you can eat freely now that you’ve had your baby, and also keep your hair out of your face and feeling cute.

A Confident-Boosting Lipstick For You

REVLON Super Lustrous Lipstick — Candied Rose

Yes, lipstick is a postpartum necessity. The REVLON Super Lustrous Lipstick is my daily go-to — I use the Candied Rose color — and I never leave home without it. It’s the perfect shade — not too bright or red, almost a natural pinky color that just gives you a little somethin’ somethin’ — and it’s a creamy lipstick that lasts literally all day long. Swipe it on as you head out because you deserve to feel like the main character, always. A dot on your cheeks also works as a cream blush in a pinch.

A Bottle Of Fast-To-Dry Nail Polish

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Polish — Beet-ing Heart

Nothing makes me feel more pulled together than having my nails painted. I can’t handle sitting in a manicurist chair (or paying for it, to be honest), but I have several bottles of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Polish stashed all over our house for a super easy way to make myself feel like I have my life together. Whether you were a nail polish girly before kids or not, this is an easy way to feel good and like your old self again when you head out the door. The Sally Hansen nail polish here is super fast-drying, and you can literally swipe it on just before you leave the house to pull a look together or to just give yourself some pretty nails and toes on your first big adventure out with baby.

Remember — every item on this list is not a necessity. But hopefully you’ve found enough confidence through these items to handle any and all of the things you’re worried about when you take baby out for the day.

Home » 21 Must-Have Baby Long-Haul Flight Essentials (Make It Easier!)

Parents sometimes deserve a gold medal for flying with a baby. Traveling with a baby can be challenging, especially over long haul flights. It requires extensive preparation to ensure you and your baby have a comfortable and safe trip.

Trying to puzzle out what to pack and which baby gear to take with when traveling can be overwhelming, especially for a first family vacation abroad. Here are some essentials on what to pack and what you need to fly with a baby for a peaceful flight.

Top 21 Long Haul Flight Baby Travel Checklist Essentials

For those who like to be organized and prepared (don’t we all?), here’s a handy list of everything you should take with you on any trip.

Flying with a Newborn Baby

Tip : When creating your baby travel packing list, be sure to add extra supplies in case of any unexpected event.

For Comfort

Your baby’s comfort is the main objective, whether you’re on a short or long haul flight. There are certain essentials to add to your baby travel checklist to ensure a pleasant flight for all.

1) Swaddle Blanket

Small blankets are ideal for wrapping your baby up and keeping those little toes warm. Swaddle sheets are a great choice and perfect for keeping warm and wiping up any messes as well.

Swaddle Blanket

They also save space compared to regular blankets because they are so light.

2) Dropper Stopper

Another must-have, unless you enjoy doing your stretches every two seconds to retrieve an item, is a stopper. Any item your baby plays with on the plane is attached to one of your or your partner’s wrists so that it’s never more than 2 feet away.

Dropper Stopper

Check out the price for this dropper stopper on Amazon here .

3) A Few Small Toys

Young children can get somewhat cranky while traveling for long periods. A collection of airplane toys is usually the last thing we cram into the bag. So they’re easy to grab when needed.

best travel toys for toddlers

Stuffed animals, music toys, teether blankie, teething keys; take whatever is compact and is loved deeply by your little one. It is best to take a few different options to keep the little one occupied.

4) A Sky Mattress

A fantastic new product from SkyBaby is the travel mattress. It enables young babies to sleep snug on your lap during a flight. There’s a loop underneath the bed that attaches to the lap belt to keep your baby secured.

Sky Baby Mattress

This means a peaceful sleep for the baby and minimal discomfort for mom or dad.

Check out the price for this baby mattress on Amazon here .

5) Pacifier and Clip

If your baby uses a pacifier, it may come in really handy while on a long-haul flight. A clip attached to your baby’s jammies will ensure the pacifier is not spat out onto the dirty airplane floor, and then lost forever.

Pacifier and cllip

Check the price for this pacifier with a clip on Amazon here .

6) Extra pair of jammies

We usually always pack in an extra pair of pajamas for the plane.

Baby Pajamas

Check out the price for these pyjamas on Amazon now .

Firstly, they’re comfortable. The best ones come with attached booties to keep their feet warm. Plus, it’s much easier to change a diaper in an airplane bathroom if all you have to undo is a few buttons. Rather than need to pull pants off and back on.

Taking an extra pair is crucial, as well. If there’s a messy accident on the plane (most likely to happen), you will definitely want a backup.

7) An airplane travel bassinet

Not even the most doting parents want to hold their baby for an 8-hour trip. For a long haul flight, parents can request a free bassinet (cot) for the baby to sleep in.

Note: It’s best to request a bassinet early as most planes usually only offer one per plane. Also, there is a limited number of seats to accommodate this space.

For Diapering

On any flight, diapering is a challenging task. To get the job done quickly and cleanly, ensure you have the right tools. To make life even more convenient, find yourself the best diaper bag possible.

Check out our favorite diaper bag here!

When you’re getting ready for a long flight, you should pack a diaper in for each hour you’ll be in transit – and some extras. A rule of thumb when packing is to add one and a half times more than what you think you’ll need for the trip.

Baby Diapers

9) Diaper rash cream

Diaper rash cream comes in small travel-sized versions and should be a staple in your carry-on.

Weleda Baby Diaper Rash Cream

10) Dirty diaper bags

These dirty diaper bags are fantastic for bagging up smelly diapers on the plane. They are also great to have on hand for any additional trash. Take a couple of these with you at a time instead of taking the whole dispenser – this will save you room.

Diaper Sacks

Check out the price for these diaper disposal bags on Amazon now .

Tip : Use a waterproof-lined diaper bag with a shoulder strap.

11) Travel case wipes

Wipes are great to carry with you, especially during the awkward diaper changes on a long flight. A travel case is great to use. It allows you to refill the wipes to last you a full 8-hour day.

Travel Wet Wipe Case

Check out these travel diaper wipes case on Amazon now!

Personal Health & Hygiene

Keeping your baby healthy is of the utmost importance. Here are some baby bag must-haves to ensure your infant is hearty and happy.

12) Nail clipper

The nail clipper is a baby bag foremost that should be carried with you at all times. You would never want your little one cutting themselves with long nails.

Baby Nail Clippers

Check out the price for these baby nail clippers on Amazon here .

13) Infant Tylenol and Ibuprofen

Infant Tylenol should be packed just in case of emergencies. Keep this in small measures with your other travel-sized liquids.

Ibuprofen sachets come in handy in 5ml sizes and are available from most supermarkets and chemists.

Tylenol

Check out the price for this Infant Tylenol Medicine on Amazon now .

14) Comb or brush

Yet another baby bag staple, though not so exciting. Keep the whole family looking presentable for that ‘just landed’ photo. A soft brush for baby is convenient and always comes in handy.

Baby Hair Brush

Check out the price for this baby hairbrush on Amazon here .

15) Antibacterial wipes

Keep antibacterial wipes on you to wash down any grimy tray tables, sticky hands, etc. Wet Ones are perfect for sensitive skin and they’re safe to use on infants.

Antibacterial Wet Wipes

Check out the price for these wet wipes on Amazon here .

16) Nose Frida – the snot sucker

You can never tell when your child will need a good old nose suck. It’s not the most important, or exciting item, but it is another baby bag essential.

NoseFrida Nose Sucker

Check out the price for this Nose Frida on Amazon here .

Feeding Time Must-Haves

With any human being on the planet, traveling with comfort food is essential, especially with your infant – through with a baby, it can be a messy job!

Comfort food can make a fussy baby a very happy one in a few seconds. Pack in these handy items to keep feeding time simple and stress-free.

17) Extra bibs

A bib is a great device when you’re trying to feed your baby. The bumkins SuperBib is terrific to use. It’s waterproof, making it easy to wipe off any spills. It folds into a small pouch for storing and is big enough to keep an extra spoon there when feeding.

Baby Bib

Check out the price for this baby bib on Amazon here .

18) An extra bottle

For those formula feeding , an extra bottle is a lifesaver. Fill it up with the exact amount of water and then just keep it handy at airport security.

Baby Bottle

Check out the price for this baby bottle on Amazon here .

This will help if one is dirty and you need an emergency comfort feed.

19) Spoon with a travel case

Take a soft baby spoon with a travel case. There’s a great one from Oxo that comes with both the travel spoon and case. During a flight, you would certainly want a place to put the dirty spoon, and that’s where a case comes in.

Infant Spoon

Check out the price for this infant feeding spoon on Amazon here .

20) Formula dispenser

The formula dispenser is yet another staple on your baby packing list. It’s an absolute lifesaver, especially when you’re trying to balance a baby and mixing up a bottle while flying 35,000 feet in the air.

Munchkin Formula Dispenser

Check out the price for this baby formula dispenser on Amazon here .

21) Baby milk and food

You are allowed to take baby food and milk onboard. If it is for the duration of the flight, it may be over 100ml. This includes; breastfeeding or formula milk , baby food in packaging, and sterilized water.

Infant Formula

Check out the price for this infant formula on Amazon here .

A food squeeze pouch makes feeding solids during a flight much more manageable. Instead of buying plastic jars of food, taking up much-needed room in your travel bag, the pouch is easy to tuck into a side pocket and is a lot more compact.

Besides the vital foods, bring your baby’s favorite snacks, such as crackers, fruit, puffs, or cereal, to keep them happy.

Final Thoughts about Your Baby Travel Essentials

When traveling with a baby, keep in mind that most major international airlines have a limited supply of baby items such as formula milk, nappies, baby food, etc. Also, be prepared for unexpected stopovers or flight delays.

Traveling with and packing for a baby can be tricky. Fitting the stroller, the right FAA-approved infant car seat , toys, teddies, and clothes can seem impossible. But exploring the world with your little one makes it all worth it. And, it gets easier as they grow.

One thing you can have some sort of control over is your carry on. Take advantage of that, and get ready for a fun, exciting flight with your little nugget.

The Ultimate Packing List for a Beach Vacation with A Baby

This post may contain affiliate links.

Sharing is caring!

Are you headed on vacation with a baby? Check out my essential baby travel packing list here! These tried and true items made beach vacations with a baby SO much easier! I call this my ultimate packing list for a beach vacation with a baby because I’ve tried to cover everything you need! I’ll highlight the best baby travel gear and baby travel essentials to make traveling with a baby a breeze.

Save this baby travel packing list for your next beach vacation *HINT* You can access the PDF version of this baby packing list at the bottom of the post!

Packing List for a Beach Vacation with A Baby

Baby clothes.

I typically bring 2 outfits for every day because baby clothes pack light and my babies LOVE to make a huge mess! If you have access to laundry, you can definitely bring less! Laundry is one of the many reasons I love to Airbnb with kids .

My babies have always been really good at being, well, exhausting! To keep my sanity, I have to have some fun with adorable baby outfits on vacation. I always make sure to have a few ‘picture-perfect outfits’ on my packing list with baby, because they are just so darn cute in them!

For a beach baby packing list, I try to keep the outfits lightweight and breathable. I’ll also pack a few long sleeve outfits in case it gets cool at night.

Baby Swimsuits and Swim Gear

Under 6 months, my babies didn’t spend much time in the pool. We always took them in for a few quick splashes, but mostly kept them out of the sun in the shade. I usually only put 1-2 swimsuits on my baby packing list when they are that young.

Once my babies were closer to the 9-12 month mark they LOVED the water. I usually bring 3-4 swimsuits at that age because we are often in and out of the pool all day! Add these adorable swim outfits to your baby beach vacation packing list!

When it comes to baby beach gear, I have a lot of favorites! You can find out all my favorite beach hacks in my post here on the best beach gear for toddlers and babies .

Baby Beach Accessories

I LOVE the Ro Sham Bo sunglasses for babies as they are completely INDESTRUCTIBLE. I also love reusable swim diapers to save on space. We have a wide brim sun hat with a back flap for the maximum sun protection.

If you are looking for the best baby floatie, be sure to check out my post on ‘the best floaties for toddlers and babies’ .

Baby Travel Sleep Essentials

We are VERY SPECIFIC about our sleep routine and we try to keep this up on vacation. We have two TOUGH sleepers, so we need all the help we can get in the sleep department! I have a whole post about the ‘ 8 tricks I use to get my kids to sleep anywhere’ if you want to read more!

Our packing list for traveling with a baby MUST include our sleep tricks! They are so essential to us! We pack a noise machine, blackout curtain, sleep sack/sleepsuit, and a baby monitor. When it comes to getting a baby to sleep on vacation, I don’t think you can be overprepared!

Baby Feeding Supplies

Lots to remember on this list! One of my favorite vacations was when my youngest son was 3 months old.  We went to Costa Rica because I was nursing him exclusively and I didn’t need to bring anything with me at all!

Other times I have brought formula, pumping supplies, and bottles and MAN OH MAN was it a pain. Washing baby bottles is already the worst, and it’s not any better on vacation.

On our Disney Cruise with our 8 month old they provided a bottle sterilizer and that was amazing. They also provided pureed food for babies at all the restaurants. It’s those little touches that make a huge difference! If you are planning to use bottles on a breast pump on vacation, be sure to add these items to your baby packing list.

I usually bring 8 disposable diapers for every day we are on vacation. If I’m tight on space I will buy diapers on arrival because they really do take up a lot of space! I bring two large packages of wipes for a week-long vacation and that’s usually enough for diaper changes and the millions of spills and messes my kids will make.

One travel hack that I ALWAYS bring is disposable doggie bags. There is nothing worse than a stinky garbage in a hotel or Airbnb and having a disposable bag to wrap it in makes a huge difference!

Another vacation lifesaver is Zincofax SRAY diaper cream . I love this stuff and it is great when you are out and about. I love that my fingers don’t get messy and its perfect for hot humid days when kids are more likely to get a diaper rash.

We use the Ju-Ju-Be BFF Diaper bag for everyday and travel and I love this bag. I love the backpack style that is so much easier on my sohulders and allows be to be totally hands free with my kids. There are so many gorgeous designs, and I’ve found that the quality has been superior to a few other diaper bags I had before this one.

I have an entire post dedicated to the ‘ top baby travel gear’ – be sure to check it out for all my ideas! It’s a running joke among my friends that I could open my own daycare with all the baby gear and gadgets that I own. I’m more than a little obsessed.

On vacation, I do try to pare down, but there are some things I am not willing to ‘downsize’! Although we occasionally bring a travel stroller , I usually opt to bring my ‘full size’ stroller. I can see the appeal of a travel stroller with an older child, but with a baby, the stroller is your go-to!

We always have so much stuff when we are going to the beach that I want a full-size stroller to lug it all! Especially if your baby is still in a bucket car seat, a full-size stroller makes the most sense.

I also LOVE babywearing on vacation. I have a baby carrier collection that rivals my stroller collection and I’ve used them all on vacation. Babywearing is perfect when you want to travel light, or if you are going to be going to places that aren’t stroller friendly.

We did a lot of babywearing on our Disney Cruise because the hallways are narrow and it’s a bit harder to navigate with a stroller. Check out my post on the ‘ best baby carriers for travel ‘ for more details on my favorite carriers for each occasion and age!

Baby Toiletries

Babies don’t need a lot in the toiletry department, but I do have a few favorite products that are perfect for travel.

My favorite sunscreen for babies is the ThinkBaby Sunscreen. This is a sunscreen that is completely safe for babies, as it made from the same ingredient as diaper cream!

I also LOVE boogie wipes for my baby and toddler as they aren’t as harsh as regular wipes on the face and provide a gentle saline cleanse.

I come prepared on vacation, so be sure to check out my OVER PREPARED mom travel first aid ki t for everything I bring!

A few toys can go a long way on vacation with a baby. I’ve added a few simple toys to my packing list with a baby – and these are great to throw in your carry-on for the plane!

I traveled with my young son at 6 months on a 5-hour plane ride to Victoria, BC. You would not believe that I completely forgot to bring any toys with me on the plane!! I was so not on my Pinterest game that day! All was well, it’s amazing how much airplane cups, the seat tray, and the safety instructions can provide a lifetime of entertainment. Older babies might enjoy the iPad as well, and there is nothing wrong with that on a plane!

The Ultimate Toddler Packing List With Free Printable

Traveling with a toddler can be both exciting and overwhelming. It’s crucial to ensure your toddler is comfortable and happy during your trip, but you don’t want to pack too much stuff. Creating a toddler packing list that includes all their necessary items is essential for a successful trip.

We recently took our toddler on our first road trip of the year, and I was amazed at how quickly our suitcase filled up. I didn’t want to forget anything important, but I didn’t want to overpack for our short trip.

When preparing a packing list for your toddler, it’s important to consider the length of your trip. If it’s a long journey, you may need to bring extra supplies to ensure you have enough for the entire duration.

Additionally, the mode of transportation is another necessary factor to consider. Traveling by car means you’ll have more space to bring more than when flying. However, if you’re flying, you’ll need to be mindful of the airline’s baggage restrictions and pack accordingly.

Let’s get started!

Note: Remember to grab the free printable toddler packing list at the end of this post! 🙂

Toddler Travel Packing List: Clothing

Daytime Outfits: Toddlers are known for getting into a mess in the blink of an eye. Plan on packing one outfit for each day of your trip and then a couple of extras because you never know when they might accidentally spill something on themselves.

One thing to consider is if you can do laundry while on vacation. If so, you can get away with packing a little less and washing your toddler’s clothes after a few days.

Pajamas: When packing pajamas for your toddler, you’ll want to bring one pair for every night you’ll be away, plus a couple of extras, just in case. Again, if you can do laundry, you can skip the extras and wash what you bring if need be.

Underwear: If your toddler is potty trained, you’ll want to pack a pair for each day, plus a few extras for backup in the event of an accident.

Socks and Shoes: Remember to grab one pair of socks for each day of your trip to your toddler packing list. Then, you’ll want to bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes and/or sandals.

Swimsuit: If you are going to a beach, waterpark, or staying near a pool, don’t forget a swimsuit for your kiddo!

Weather Appropriate Jacket/Coat: Remember to bring a suitable jacket for your toddler. If you are traveling to a warmer climate, a light hoodie or sweater would be appropriate, but if it’s cold, you should pack a thicker jacket. It’s just as important as packing an appropriate hat.

Weather Appropriate Hat: When traveling with your toddler, pack a hat suitable for the season and your destination. For instance, if it’s winter, bring a warm hat, while a UV-protecting sun hat would be ideal for a warmer beach vacation.

Toddler Travel Packing List: Sleep

Sound Machine: Keeping your child’s sleep routine as close to normal as possible is crucial. Well-rested kids equal a more fun vacation! One thing both of my kids love having is their sound machines.

Both of my children love this sound machine , and it’s been so helpful in creating good sleep habits. It’s undoubtedly one of the things I would hate to forget when packing for a trip!

Cozy Blanket: Bringing your toddler’s coziest blanket will help them feel comfortable and familiar. Also, having a cozy blanket for your toddler to cuddle up with when going on a road trip can be nice.

Pillow: Bring your toddler’s pillow to ensure they can get the best rest possible while away. My son has this toddler pillow , and he loves it! It’s the perfect size, and it doesn’t flatten out.

Travel Blackout Blinds: Blackout blinds are crucial for maintaining a consistent bedtime for your toddler. Consider bringing travel blackout blinds like these ones, which will keep your baby’s bedtime routine as close to normal as possible.

These blinds are easy to set up as they have suction cups to attach to the window. They are also affordable, with the option of purchasing a pack of one or two, and available in a variety of colors and patterns to choose from.

Baby Monitor: If your toddler will be sleeping in a separate room from you, be sure to pack your baby monitor.

Toddler Travel Packing List: Gear

Car Seat: Clearly, you’ll need a car seat when taking a road trip. But you also must remember to bring it when flying so your toddler has a safe seat when you reach your destination.

Backpack/Diaper Bag: Bringing a diaper bag or backpack is a very beneficial thing to do. It allows you to have some essentials with you wherever you go!

When we travel, I tend to pack an extra outfit and some things we often need, like snacks and small toys. Also, if your toddler isn’t potty trained yet, you’ll want to bring diapers and wipes in your bag.

Travel Cot With Sheets: If you’ve moved your toddler out of their crib and into a big kid bed, bringing a travel cot can be a lifesaver! Not only will you have your bed to yourself, but a travel cot is much lower to the ground, making it easier for little kids to use it safely and independently.

We got our toddler this travel cot , and he absolutely loves it! It comes with a soft sheet to protect the cot and has plenty of room for him to grow into.

Stroller: Depending on where you’ll be going and how much waking you’ll do, you’ll want to consider if you need to bring a stroller.

Toddler Travel Packing List: Play

A Camera: One of my toddler’s favorite items is this camera we got him for his third birthday. He loves taking pictures any chance he gets, and he can get some surprisingly good ones!

Giving your toddler a camera while on vacation is a fun way to get some pictures you might not have necessarily taken.

Security Item: If your toddler has a security item like a lovey or blanket, you won’t want to forget it at home.

3-5 Favorite Toys: Toddlers don’t always have the longest attention spans, so it’s ideal to bring a few toys you know will hold their attention.

A Couple Books: Books are always a great option to have when traveling. Reading books together can help pass the time when waiting in the car or on a flight. And if you read bedtime stories, you won’t want to stop that routine! Check out this list of some of our favorite board books !

Toddler Travel Packing List: Mealtime

Bibs: If your kiddo still uses bibs, you’ll want to pack a few to prevent clothing stains while you’re away.  These ones are a great option that can be easily washed.

Utensils: Some might think bringing kid-sized utensils is unnecessary. But if you have enough room, small utensils can help your child eat more efficiently.

Sippy Cups/Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is vital while traveling. Ensure you add sippy cups or water bottles to your toddler packing list.

Snacks: Besides water, snacks are another essential thing to bring while traveling. Nobody wants a hangry toddler!

When packing snacks, you’ll want to bring easy options. Foods like bananas, crackers, and granola bars are a great place to start!

Toddler Travel Packing List: Bathing and Health

Diapers and Wipes/Pull-Ups (if needed): If your toddler hasn’t started potty training or is in pull-ups, you’ll want to ensure you bring enough for at least your travel days.

To save space in your suitcase, you can always buy a small pack of what you need when you get to your destination.

Portable Potty Seat: If your kiddo is potty trained (or is working on it), you need this portable potty seat ! This little seat folds up quickly to fit in a diaper bag or backpack and secures most toilet seats.

Plastic Bags: Plastic bags are handy for many things when traveling, especially with a toddler. I carry these ones with us so we can easily use them for garbage, wet/dirty clothes, or dirty diapers.

Toiletries: You’ll need to add your kiddo’s toiletries to your toddler packing list. Remember things like soap/shampoo, lotion, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

Nail Clippers: I’ve found that it’s better to have nail clippers with you and not need them rather than need them and not have them. So throw some nail clippers in your purse or toiletries bag!

Hairbrush/Comb: Hairbrushes and combs are easily forgotten; I can speak from experience! Be sure to add them to your list so they aren’t overlooked.

Also, ensure you pack any hair bows, headbands, or hair ties if your child uses them.

Hand Sanitizer: Adding hand sanitizer to a bag that’s easily accessible is recommended. Hand sanitizer can be very helpful when you need to quickly clean your hands when there isn’t a bathroom nearby.

First Aid Kit: A first aid kit is important because you never know when you’ll need it. This one is a great option, especially if you are taking a road trip and can easily slide it under a car seat.

Attorneys for a teenager who was ordered into jail clothes and handcuffs during a field trip to a Detroit court filed a lawsuit against a judge Wednesday, accusing him of humiliation, false arrest and unlawful detention.

It is the latest fallout since Judge Kenneth King singled out 15-year-old Eva Goodman for falling asleep and having what he considered to be a bad attitude while she was visiting 36th District Court on Aug. 13.

King was removed from courtroom duties last week until he completes training, which hasn't started yet.

His actions were “extreme and outrageous and calculated for the purpose of inflicting fear and severe emotional distress,” according to the lawsuit, which seeks more than $75,000.

Goodman was on a field trip led by a nonprofit group, The Greening of Detroit, when she fell asleep. Her mother later said she may have been tired because they don't have a permanent address.

King said it was her attitude that led to the jail clothes, handcuffs and stern words — all broadcast on livestream video from his courtroom. He also threatened her in front of her peers with juvenile detention before releasing her.

King “acted as producer, broadcaster, complaining witness, arresting officer, finder of fact, judge and disciplinarian,” attorneys Gary Felty Jr. and James Harrington said in the lawsuit.

A message seeking comment from King's lawyer wasn't immediately returned Wednesday.

“I wanted this to look and feel very real to her, even though there’s probably no real chance of me putting her in jail,” King told a TV station last week.

The teen's mother, Latoreya Till, told reporters that her daughter is struggling a week later.

“It's been pretty devastating,” Till said. “Eva doesn't want to come outside. She doesn't want to be involved with no one else but her family, relatives. It's hard for her to sleep at night. She’s asking me, ‘Why the judge do me like this out of all the kids?’”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A former babysitter pleaded guilty to manslaughter Wednesday for the 2019 death of a man she was accused of disabling as an infant 40 years ago and was sentenced to three years in prison, finally admitting that she hit him numerous times.

Terry McKirchy, 62, accepted a plea deal for the death of Benjamin Dowling, who died at 35 after a life of severe disabilities caused by a brain hemorrhage he suffered in 1984 when he was 5 months old while at McKirchy’s suburban Fort Lauderdale home.

Investigators have long believed she caused the injury by shaking him, but she had always denied hurting him even after pleading guilty in 1985 to injuring him.

Rae and Joe Dowling said after the hearing that they are glad McKirchy admitted to hurting their son, but nothing will bring him back or get him the life he would have had if she hadn’t. He never walked, talked or ate on his own and spent his life in a wheelchair.

“She will have to live with this,” Rae Dowling said.

“We just have to be strong and move forward,” Joe Dowling said.

In a letter of apology read to Dowling’s parents by her attorney, assistant public defender David Fry, McKirchy said she was feeling overwhelmed and exhausted by taking care of numerous children and struck him, causing his injuries. But she provided no details.

Before the plea deal, she had been charged with first-degree murder and faced a possible life sentence.

“It was in a state of impulse and anger that I struck Benjamin while he and other children were crying,” she wrote. “Your life and Benjamin’s life were truly harmed by me and I am truly sorry.”

Shackled and dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit, McKirchy never showed any emotion during the 90-minute hearing while her letter was read, as Dowling’s mother and sister talked about his life or during a photo montage showing him through the years with his family.

“Benjamin taught us all many valuable lessons, and everyone who knew Benjamin was better because they did know him,” Rae Dowling told Circuit Judge George Odom Jr. during the hearing.

Pam Chestnutt, her former best friend and Benjamin’s cousin, told the court she knew McKirchy had a bad temper but would not have not believed her capable of hurting an infant like that, though eventually came to the realization she could. She said what especially hurt is that in the days after Benjamin was injured, McKirchy repeatedly told her she had not hurt him.

“You sat with me face to face and you denied doing anything to that baby. You told me Benjamin fell off the couch,” she told McKirchy. “You lied straight to my face.”

A Broward County grand jury indicted McKirchy, who now lives in Sugar Land, Texas, with first-degree murder in 2021 after an autopsy concluded Dowling died from his decades-old injuries. She had voluntarily entered the Broward County Jail in May to begin her sentence after the deal was close to being finalized. Prosecutor Pascale Achille said the case took three years because McKirchy’s attorneys had to do their own investigation and then a plea had to be negotiated.

This isn’t the first time McKirchy has taken a deal in connection with Dowling’s injuries, receiving an exceptionally light sentence after pleading no contest to attempted murder in 1985. Then six months pregnant with her third child and facing 12 to 17 years in prison, she was sentenced to weekends in jail until giving birth. She was then freed and put on probation for three years.

At the time, she insisted she was innocent, telling reporters that her “conscience is clear.” She said then that she took the deal because wanted to put the case behind her and be with her children.

Prosecutors called the sentence “therapeutic” but didn’t explain at the time. Ryal Gaudiosi, then McKirchy’s public defender, said the sentence was “fair under the circumstances.” He died in 2009.

Achille said she can’t explain why McKirchy was given such a light sentence 40 years ago except to say “it was a different time.”

Rae and Joe Dowling had been married four years when Benjamin was born Jan. 13, 1984. Both Dowlings worked, so they hired McKirchy, then 22, to babysit him at her home.

Rae Dowling told investigators that when she picked up Benjamin from McKirchy on July 3, 1984, his body was limp and his fists were clenched. She rushed him to the hospital, where doctors concluded he had suffered a brain hemorrhage from severe shaking. McKirchy was arrested within days.

The Dowlings told reporters in 1985 they were stunned when prosecutors told them minutes before a court hearing of the plea deal McKirchy would receive. They said Wednesday that they are still stunned by that sentence.

The Dowlings had two more children and would take Benjamin to their games and performances as they grew up. The photo montage during the hearing showed his family worked hard to make him part of school and family outings, weddings, vacations and other milestones.

“Growing up, Benjamin taught me and countless others invaluable lessons about compassion, empathy, patience and understanding,” said his younger sister, Melissa Dowling. “Benjamin’s presence was a constant source of inspiration. He never walked or talked or got the chance to say, ‘I love you.’”

The family moved to Florida’s Gulf Coast in the late 1990s. Benjamin died at their home on Sept. 16, 2019.

“He was so strong. We thought he would live forever,” his mother said.

CASUAL & EASY OUTFITS

You can find hiking trails, parks, and much other adventurous stuff to do in Russia. So pack casual and easy outfits in which you can feel comfortable all day.

Instead of heels, I suggest you carry sneakers because you will walk a lot there. You can wear shorts, there’s no harm in that, but jeans are more prevalent among locals.

21 – Yellow Top With Black High-Waisted Pants And Green Silk Oversized Shirt For Airport

For the airport, always select comfy clothes. Whenever I choose my airport outfits , I remember that the fabric shouldn’t be too tight because it can be irritating if the flight is long. You can always choose oversized hoodies for the airport, but this outfit is perfect if you want to look chic.

Pick a yellow crop top with black high-waisted pants. You can pair it with any oversized button-down shirt. Roll the sleeves up for a chic look.

Lastly, choose your comfiest pair of sneakers to complete your look. Accessorize your look with black shades and carry a tote bag for all your belongings.

Another casual outfit you can easily wear on a sunny day is an olive spaghetti strap camisole with beige shorts. You can wear an oversized shirt and tie it from the front to create a cover-up, or you can also wear a cropped jacket.

For footwear, sneakers are the best option if you plan to walk. Otherwise, white slides will also look fine.

While in Russia, you had to travel from one city to another. Russia has one of the largest rails, so you should definitely experience it while you are there.

Don’t bother to wear anything too fancy for your train ride. Just wear a hoodie and light blue flared denim jeans. Pair your outfit with a mint green sherpa jacket.

Another tip if you are visiting Russia for the first time is don’t carry too much stuff. Instead of taking many handbags, go with a staple crossbody bag and a big tote bag that can fit your important stuff.

Russia has a lot of monuments to visit. Cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg are famous for heritage and culture, so you can see museums, galleries, and architecture.

Although Russians are not the biggest fan of bold and bright patterns, but you can wear dark shades for the night outs, like a fancy dinner at a yacht.

I suggest wearing light colors for the churches and museums and going with dresses because they look more formal. If you are on a business trip, then choose skirts.

18 – Purple Crewneck Full-Sleeves Midi Dress With Pink Belt And Purple Hat

If you want to wear modern clothes in Russia, but for a formal gathering, then there’s nothing a better option than a crewneck midi dress.

You can add a pink belt and a purple hat for a voguish look. Go with transparent heels if you are attending a party or brown boots if you are just out to admire the beauty of the place.

Accessorize your outfit with a few bracelets and rings. A little tip for you is to avoid neck pieces with crewneck dresses. Keep your makeup minimal, and a bright shade of lipstick is all you need to

What To Wear In Russia

17 – Red Silk Front Knot Bishop Sleeves Top With Matching Red Skirt

A Red Silk outfit is the perfect option for clubbing when you are in Russia. You can wear lace-up heels with this dress for an evening glam look.

Keep your makeup dewy, and use minimal jewelry to complete the look. Lastly, do your hair in a beachy waves style, so you don’t have to tie them up.

What To Wear In Russia

SUMMER & SPRING OUTFITS

Summer is a perfect time to travel to Russia if you want to explore this country’s hidden gems. The temperature ranges from 20 to 30-degree celsius. Remember that Russians wear modest clothing, so don’t bring anything too short. Otherwise, you will feel uncomfortable around the locals.

Although you can enjoy good sunny days in Russia, you will soon find out that the temperature is unpredictable. So always carry light wear jackets and umbrellas with you.

16 – Black And White Stripe Sweatshirt With Beige Pleated Skirt And Fleece Stockings

An easy way to wear skirts in Russia is to pair them with stockings. You can wear any top from your wardrobe or a sweatshirt and wear a skirt. Choose chunky white sneakers to complete the look.

What To Wear In Russia

14 – White Sports Bra, White Pleated Skirt, And Pink Sheer Button-Down Shirt

What to pack for Russia in summer is the most asked question by first-time visitors. You don’t have to go over the board while packing. Keep your luggage minimum, so you don’t have to worry about that. Since we are talking about summer, an all-white outfit is a must. Pair a white sports bra with a white pleated skirt.

You can add a feminine touch by wearing a pink button-down shirt over it. Keep the buttons open, or tie them from the front as you like. Lastly, choose white pair of sneakers to finish the look. Keep your jewelry minimal, and that’s it.

What To Wear In Russia

13 – White Crop Top, Ripped Blue Jeans, And Denim Crop Jacket

Another important question I have mostly heard is what not to wear in Russia. When you search your query, you might get answers like don’t wear ripped jeans in Russia. However, the reality is that tourists in Russia have no dress code.

Pair a white tank top with blue jeans and wear a blue denim jacket. Choose white sneakers and match your belt with the color of your footwear. For the accessory, add silver hoops to keep your look elegant. Last but not least, don’t forget to carry a sling bag.

What To Wear In Russia

WINTER & FALL OUTFITS

Russain winters are extremely cold, and you can face heavy snowfall, so always come prepared for that. The temperature varies from -2°C/28°F to -28°C/-18°F. Therefore, it’s wise to pack a lot of layers.

Whether going to Moscow’s Red Square or Hermitage Museum at the Winter Palace, you need to wear a lot of warm clothes. I suggest wearing a thermal first, then a sweater, and lastly a long coat – basically you want to layer like a pro . Wear waterproof boots and don’t forget to pack gloves.

12 – Blue And White Turtle Neck Sweater With Black Jeans And Black Fur Coat

Winters are always extreme in Russia, especially from November to March. Try to pack according to the season, and I suggest checking the weather app for dates of your stay beforehand because Russia’s cold weather can freeze you to death. Another factor to consider here is which cities are on your list.

Wear a sweater with your warmest jeans. Now layer a black fur coat and white cap. You can also add wool gloves; trust me, you will need them. Use a crossbody bag; it will be easy to carry around.

What To Wear In Russia

11 – Black Crop Top And Pink Sweatpants With Black Denim Jacket

If you are visiting an area that is not so cold, pair your black sweatshirt with pink joggers. Add a black leather jacket to give you a comfy yet stylish vibe. Choose chunky sneakers for that extra height. Lastly, add black shades to complete your look.

10 – Light Blue Turtle Neck And Leather Blazer With White Sherpa Coat

If you like leather blazers and trousers, pair them with a light blue turtleneck and a white sherpa coat. You can accessorize minimal jewelry. Also, for snowy areas, wear boots instead of sneakers. Add colors with pink sunglasses, and that’s it.

trip outfit for baby

09 – White Turtle Neck And Black Pants With Long White Coat And Checkered Print Muffler

A white turtle neck and white coat are a great combination with black jeans and black boots. But to elevate the look of your outfit, add prints with mufflers or caps. Checkered print in white and black is an excellent option for pairing.

trip outfit for baby

08 – Off-White Co-Ord Set With Boots And Long Oversized Brown Coat

Co-ord sets are pretty common these days; almost everyone has a pair of them in their wardrobe. You can layer your white co-ord set with thermals and put on a brown wool coat for extreme weather. Wool coats are best for Russian winters, so don’t forget to pack them with you.

trip outfit for baby

07 – Greyish Black Turtleneck Dress With Black Wool Coat And Checkered Bucket Hat

Turtleneck dresses look super cute and are easy to style. Thanks to the legging makers who came up with the idea that you can wear leggings in winter, and thanks to Tiktok for making it so popular. Also, add a black wool coat and a bucket hat to finish the look.

trip outfit for baby

06 – Green V-Neck Pleated Midi Dress With White Strap Sandals

Midi dresses are the perfect option for desi moms on vacation. Not too fancy but not so casual, wear green midi dresses with white strap sandals. Either go with sandals or choose sneakers, depending on your comfort level.

What To Wear In Russia

05 – White Hoodie And White Straight Pants With Colorful Printed Coat And White Mary Jane Shoes

White hoodies, sweatpants, and a colorful cardigan are the best ways to spend your lazy days in Russia when you want to roam around the streets. Also, the colorful cardigan is a staple piece because you can style it with many outfits.

What To Wear In Russia

04 – Black Spaghetti Strap Mini Dress With White Detailing And Long Fur Coat

When it comes to styling statement pieces, no one can do it better than Hailey Bieber. Choose a black mini dress and pair it with a long fur coat. Add long boots to finish the look. It’s a perfect outfit for clubbing in Russia.

What To Wear In Russia

03 – Beige Turtle Neck And High Waisted Skirt With Brown Belt And Beige Coat

If sophistication and elegance could be defined with one picture, then this would be it. Pair the beige turtleneck with a high-waist skirt. You can add a beige or brown long beige coat. Style long brown boots with this outfit and match your belt with boots to add colors to the look.

What To Wear In Russia

02 – Grey Top With Black Elastic Waist Trousers And Black Blazer

A grey ribbed shirt with black elastic waist trousers is perfect for comfortable sightseeing in Russia. There is no specific dress code for tourists in Russia so you can style everything. Choose a black blazer if you want to keep your look subtle. Accessorize your outfit with golden hoops, and a chain necklace would be a nice addition.

Carry a vibrant or bright color bag to contrast the outfit. Lastly, sightseeing means a lot of walking, so pick your most comfortable sandals, and you are all set to go out for the day.

What To Wear In Russia

01 – Green Printed V-NeckFront-Knot Pleated Midi Dress With Black Sandals

Another excellent outfit if you want to dress apart from traditional clothes in Russia is a flowy midi pleated dress. You can choose a V-neck long sleeves dark green dress with embellishment of black detailing on it. Choose black sandals with laces so you can wrap them around your foot.

Roll up the sleeves if the weather is too hot. By the way, it is the best look to go with if you are searching for what to wear in Russia in summer. Wear a smartwatch as an accessory. Lastly, pick up your colored shades so you can enjoy the sightseeing without getting your eyes affected by sun rays.

What To Wear In Russia

Q: Can you wear jeans in Russia?

Ans: Russia never directly bans jeans. However, in the past, there were restrictions on clothing from the western world, but now jeans are pretty popular in style here and will serve as an adjustable base for your outfit when paired with lighter layers in the summer and heavier ones in the winter.

Q: Is there a dress code in Russia?

Ans: For Russians, there are some standard norms for dressing. However, for tourists there’s no dress code in Russia.

Q: How should I dress in Moscow?

Ans: Because of how conservative Russia is, bright colors will make you stick out, especially in the winter. Moreover, denim is very popular in Moscow in the summer and throughout the year.

Summers in Moscow can get hot. It can range between 77-86°F (25-30°C) and sometimes be humid. Dressing appropriately, comfortably, and accordingly will save you a headache and make your stay more enjoyable.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a travel capsule wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Must-see attractions during summer include many parks, such as VDNH, Chistyye Prudy, Izmaylovo and Izmailovsky Park, and of course the famous antique and flea market called Vernisaj.

Moscow has every single store you could think of! From global luxury brands to everyday wear, it caters to many budgets.

If you want to arrive during sale season, then arrive one to two months before the end of the season. You can pick up European-made goods cheaper than in North America. Good shopping malls include Afimall located in Moscow City (another must see) and Evropeiskii located at Kievsky train station.

I’m traveling to Moscow in five days and was wondering if I should really not wear shorts. I’ve been to Nizhny Novgorod in the summer and Moscow in the winter so I have a few ideas about what to wear, but I thought that shorts wouldn’t be so bad.

Russia Packing List

Whether you're heading to Russia for vacation or business, there are a few absolute essentials that you can't forget to pack. Beyond the appropriate wardrobe, you should bring a power converter; your passport and visa; and much more. Make your list and plan ahead of time so you don't leave anything important behind.

You can't travel to Russia if you don't have a Russian visa. In order to get one, you should apply well in advance of your trip through an embassy. You will also need an invitation (issued by the hotel at which you plan to stay or through a travel agent), and you can use this invitation to apply for your visa. Double check that the visa is valid during the dates of your trip, and carry your visa with you wherever you go in Russia as sometimes police do random checks.

Bring some cash with you, as you will likely need it. Euros and USD can be exchanged almost anywhere in Russia. There will be ATMs in the airport (or wherever you are arriving), but it’s possible in Russia that they’ll be out of order—so don’t take that risk. It’s quite difficult to pay by credit card in Russia (and practically impossible to pay by debit card), so having cash is essential. Make sure the bills are in crisp, good condition, as it’s quite common in Russia for people (and even banks) to reject damaged bills.

If you’re traveling to Moscow or St. Petersburg and are planning on seeing the tourist attractions , make sure you have a good way of securing your money. Either wear a money belt or get a small bag that sits close to your body with a secure closure—and keep an eye on it!

If you are going to be staying with a host family, or interacting extensively with Russian people in general, it’s nice to bring some small souvenirs from your country (mugs, t-shirts, keychains, and so on). This is a small gesture that will be greatly appreciated.

Toilet Paper

Russian toilets are notoriously dirty and unkempt, and you will often not find toilet paper inside. Carry some with you (or a small pack of tissues) just in case. You may also want to pack a travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer as well.

In general, it’s good to bring layers. A scarf will be particularly useful for covering your head if you’re a woman planning to visit religious monuments. This is usually not obligatory, but it is appreciated.

Russian weather is quite unpredictable, and even if you’re traveling at the height of summer, it would be wise to bring an umbrella. This is especially true in St. Petersburg or northern Russia , where it's more likely to rain.

When you're packing your toiletry bag, make sure to include prescription drugs and contact lens solution. Although you can buy most household items in pharmacies and shops in Russia, these particular things are surprisingly difficult to find.

Fancy Outfits

If you plan on going clubbing, you'll need to bring nice clothes. Many clubs, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg , have a strict dress code and will not let you in if you’re not up to their standards. So don’t show up wearing jeans and a T-shirt, which may be fine if you're  going to a casual, local bar  but not to an exclusive club.

Duffel Bags

Packing light is recommended no matter where you're traveling to. But in Russia, try to leave your oversized luggage and rolling suitcases at home. Instead, use a duffel bag that you can easily throw over your shoulder. Many Russian metro stations don’t have escalators but they do have huge staircases that must be climbed to get around the station, which is difficult to navigate with a bulky suitcase.
