A Ultimate Guide to African Safaris for Singles

More and more solo travelers are seeking the adventure of exploring Africa on their own. However, African safaris can be pricey, especially for singles who often have to pay a single supplement rate for accommodation. This additional fee can significantly increase the cost of a safari, making it unaffordable for some solo travelers.

Planning ahead is essential for singles looking for affordable African safaris. By booking accommodations in advance and choosing the right season, solo travelers can find more budget-friendly options. It’s also beneficial to work with travel agents who specialize in solo travel, as they can help find accommodations that cater to singles’ needs.

Key Takeaways:

  • Best African safaris for singles offer affordable options.
  • Planning in advance is crucial to secure budget-friendly accommodations.
  • Choosing the right season can lead to more affordable safari experiences.
  • Working with a travel agent experienced in solo travel is beneficial.
  • African safaris provide unique adventures for solo travelers.

What is a Single Supplement for Solo Travelers?

When it comes to solo travel, one aspect that often catches travelers off guard is the single supplement. The single supplement is an additional fee that solo travelers may incur when booking accommodations for their safari. This fee is charged because most safari accommodations are priced for two guests sharing a room or tent.

The single supplement is meant to cover the costs of operating the lodge and paying staff wages. It can vary greatly, ranging from a small percentage to as much as 75% of the per-person rate. For solo travelers, this can make safaris considerably more expensive compared to couples or groups.

It’s important for solo travelers to understand the concept of the single supplement and consider it when planning their budget. By being aware of this additional cost, solo travelers can make informed decisions and explore options that cater specifically to singles, helping them find more affordable safari accommodations.

While the single supplement may add an additional expense to your solo safari, there are ways to mitigate its impact. Working with a travel agent experienced in solo travel can help you find accommodations that cater to singles and minimize the single supplement. Additionally, planning your safari in advance and choosing the right season can also lead to more affordable options. By being proactive and well-informed, you can embark on an unforgettable African safari without breaking the bank.

Yes, A Solo Safari Is Possible

By Mary Holland

Serengeti National Park Tanzania

Whether it's to see the Great Migration in Kenya or go lion-spotting in Botswana , the African safari is a trip usually reserved for once-in-a-lifetime family getaways or a honeymoon to beat all honeymoons. Yet there I was, soaking up the sights and sounds of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania —solo. Early each morning, I drank tea in bed, alone and undistracted, my only companions the morning birds. During the day, my guide, Zawadi, and I traversed the park’s grassy plains scanning for animals. In the evenings, I joined the other guests—a group of Dutch tourists—for dinner at the communal dining table, and around the campfire. At first, it felt awkward, a lone traveler joining a group of lifelong friends for a meal, but the camp’s manager Angel, who also joined the table, was quick to make everyone feel comfortable. We launched into conversation about what we’d seen that day: a leopard stalking an antelope; a clan of hyenas lying outside their den. Did anyone else hear the lions roaring late last night? This was one thing that connected us all—we were filled with stories we couldn’t wait to share.

A few days in the middle of nowhere with just the hotel staff and a few other guests you don’t know for company? Yep, that can be intimidating. But it also has the potential to also be an incredibly rewarding experience. “Africa can be daunting to tackle as a solo traveler, but it needn’t be,” says Adrian Kaplan, general manager of marketing at Singita. “There is no better place than an African safari to recharge, center, and reconnect with nature.”

And reconnecting with that nature, even if you're traveling solo, isn't as daunting as you'd think. “ Gorilla trekking in Rwanda (which Singita will offer from August 2019) is a perfect, life-changing adventure [for a solo traveler], as tracking gorillas is an easy expedition to do on your own,” says Kaplan. For the trek—which any traveler can book, and isn’t exclusive to Singita—guests are divided into groups of eight (dependent on their fitness level) where guides take them into the Volcanoes National Park to track gorillas. Whether you’re entirely alone or with a group of five people, staying in a five-star lodge or a hostel, you’re still clumped together in a group of eight.

It's not just gorilla-trekking that's a fit for solo travelers. “Active trips that include activities like walking (with Khoi/San people in the Kalahari), boating (on the Boteti River to see elephants), Mokoro canoe in the Okavango and day/night drives looking for predators and prey are the kind of trips solo safari goers are most interested in,” says Dave van Smeerdijk, co-founder of safari company, Natural Selection . Even game drives require a large amount of time with other guests, as you generally share a vehicle. Towards the end of an evening game drive, the guide will generally stop the truck for sundowners. Here, huddled beside the vehicle, guests share stories over gin and tonics and biltong (jerky).

Of course, if you don’t want to interact with other guests at all, you can book a private guide and vehicle through your safari outfitter or the lodge itself, but this does come with a heftier price tag. What’s key is finding a travel company that can tailor to your needs, whatever those might be. Judi Wineland of Thomson Safaris recommends you select a company that will look after you throughout your trip, and with whom you have a good rapport. “Are they calling you back quickly? Are they hearing your needs? Also, it’s great to be completely on your own, but it really elevates the solo experience when you can meet like-minded people along the way, so choose a company that shares your ethics,” says Wineland.

"Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a perfect, life-changing adventure [for a solo traveler]," says Adrian Kaplan, general manager of marketing at Singita.

Some safari outfitters like Robin Pope, which specializes in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, offer various experiences that cater to guests who have similar interests such as birding and boating, and Abercrombie & Kent invites solo travelers to journey as part of a large group of like-minded people in their solo journey program. It also comes down to the safari property itself, as some are more ‘solo friendly’ than others.

“I would guide someone towards properties that have more of the old-school, communal dining programs,” says Suzanne Teng, Abercrombie & Kent product manager, Africa. She cites Kenya’s Lewa Wilderness camp, where all guests dine together with the lodge owners, as an example. Other camps—like Dunia in Tanzania’s Serengeti and Jack’s Camp in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi —also have communal dining tables where guests can interact with each other during meal times. “These types of camps encourage guests to mingle (even couples) and share their stories from the day,” says Teng.

When it comes to rates, many lodges offer a rate per room, but there are tour operators that have specials for single rates. As part of their solo journey program, Abercrombie & Kent has special offers and discounted single supplements. With Thomson Safaris, they can even pair you up with another traveler. “In terms of rooming, if we have another solo traveler of the same gender on the trip, we can match you up to share some of the cost. More than one lifelong friend has been made this way!” says Wineland. You can also save more cash depending on the time of year you choose to go. Dave van Smeerdijk recommends solo travelers visit during the rainy ‘Green Season’, from January to March, which is the low season but still offers great game viewing, as there are often specials for single rooms.

The idea of travelling to Africa on your own can be very daunting! All our safari adventures are small group trips which offer a friendly and safe way for single travellers to visit Africa. Exploring Namibia, Botswana or Zambia with a small group allows you to enjoy your holiday in the company of like minded African enthusiasts. Tailor-made holidays staying at lodges and safari camps often incur expensive single-person supplements making your trip much more than that of someone travelling with a partner. Many of our adventures have very low or no single-person supplements at all, making these very economic options for solo travellers. Others offer the opportunity to have the single supplement waived if you are willing to share a tent or room with another traveller of the same gender.

Safari is a wonderfully rewarding holiday for anyone wanting to travel alone. Whether you want to join a small group of like-minded single travellers in Africa or have a tailor-made safari itinerary planned just for you, there are literally hundreds of possibilities. In fact of all the trips we organise, it’s probably only self-drive itineraries we wouldn’t recommend to a solo traveller.

If you are looking for company when you holiday in Africa then one of the best things to consider is to join a small group, of typically no more than eight people. These safaris operate on frequent departure dates throughout the year and vary in length, style and types of activity.

If group travel doesn’t appeal then we can plan a safari specifically for you. The majority of camps and lodges we use are small and have an atmosphere akin to that of a sociable, informal dinner party.

Travel Tips

  • If you would like to join a ‘set departure’ itinerary then gorilla tracking safaris in Rwanda and Uganda, or walking safaris in Zambia are great options.
  • It’s possible to join a riding safari as a solo traveller, in fact many of our clients do just that.
  • There are some excellent small group trips in Botswana and Tanzania, where single travellers are made very welcome.
  • We spend a lot of time travelling solo ourselves so are well placed to advise on this style of safari.
  • The inclusive atmosphere at small safari camps means Africa is a great destination for single travellers.

Masai Mara Camping Safari Tour

  • Christmas & New Year

Masai Mara Camping Safari

Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

Absolutely fantastic! I was with a lovely group of people, the guide and driver were brilliant and the accommodation was out of this world. Only down side is lots of travelling but the experience made up for it. Loved the Fig Tree and masi mara.

5 Days Mount Kenya Circumnavigation Trek Using Sirimon Chogoria Routes

We were delighted with our Mount Kenya 5 day package. John’s communication was brilliant from our first contact and he was happy to answer any questions. Our guide Michael and the wonderful team of porters were outstanding-experienced, friendly and professional, tailoring the hike to our needs. The food in particular was spectacular. Overall the excursion of a lifetime and great value too-we would not hesitate to recommend this hike.

Our 5 day Kenya Masai Mara safari was fantastic. Everything was very good. Martin our driver guide, extremely hard-working, knowledgeable and helpful. From airport reception to on time performance all very good. Good company I can recommend.

7 Days Kenya mid range Joining Safari Tour

7 Days Kenya mid range Joining Safari

We hired a vehicle and driver through John, CKC, both organized by John. We booked the service before leaving Australia. John maintained contact with us throughout. He was able to secure our driver/guide, George, who was fantastic. The vehicle was very comfortable. We visited Tsavo East, on a private tour, quite a drive away from Nairobi. We considered a self-drive, but very pleased we didn't. George was amazing in the madness of Kenyan highway driving. We'd have no hesitation in recommending CKC and John if you are considering a private tour of Kenya. Excellent value for money.

7 Days, 6 Nights Safari To Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha And Amboseli With Complimentary First Night Accommodation at After 40 Hotel and free airport pickup.

We loved the variety of this tour - safari by vehicle, hot air balloon, bike, boat, and foot. The accommodations ranged from basic to good, so this tour is best for those who don’t need luxury accommodations, which we did not. The food was always very good and plentiful. We had 2 guides - Nathan and Tony, and both were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and good drivers. The optional tours need to be updated on the description of the tour, as inflation has caused an increase in prices. The hot air balloon safari was $450/pp (a wonderful experience with a nice champagne picnic breakfast afterwards). The Massai village visit was $25/pp. We recommend both. Bring lots of cash for drinks, souvenirs, and tipping. We underestimated and ran out, but our guide made a stop at a bank for us to get more. Good communication and customer service from the tour company as well. Overall an incredible vacation. We will be back in Kenya in the future and would definitely use this company again.

5 Days Kenya medium range safari for Amboseli and Tsavo Parks from Nairobi to Mombasa Tour

5 Days Kenya medium range safari for Amboseli and Tsavo Parks from Nairobi to Mombasa

I would highly recommend CKC Tours. John responded to all our queries promptly and went back and forth until we had an itinerary we were happy with. We were then met by John at the airport and given all the documentation for our trip which included lodges at Masai Mara and Amboseli and internal flights. It was all very easy and well organised. I also found it to be very competitively priced considering the service we received and the standard of accommodation.

5 Day Kenya Flying Safari Tour

5 Day Kenya Flying Safari

John organized safari lodges for us in Amboseli and Masai Mara, as well as a night in Nairobi and domestic air transfers. Throughout the booking process and the trip itself, John was very communicative and helpful. The price was competitive for the level of personal service we received.

Safari holidays

Incredible safari holidays with kuoni.

No matter how many wildlife documentaries you’ve seen, nothing can prepare you for the real thing. Let us take you on an African safari holiday .

The term ‘safari’ comes from a Swahili word meaning ‘journey’. Take Jeep rides deep into the wilderness or fly into tiny national park airstrips where lions roam the runway. Soar over herds of zebra at sunrise in a hot-air balloon, sleep out in a luxury treehouse under a blanket of stars, or book your seat for the greatest wildlife show on Earth where over a million wildebeest migrate across the scorched plains.

We’ve spent more than 40 years finding the best African safari experiences and places to stay. We can put you in touch with incredible local guides and tell you about the safari camps where elephants walk right through the lobby. Our safari experts love sharing their tips and advice to make sure you have the best safari holiday possible – in fact, we were voted Best Medium Safari, Nature & Wildlife Holiday Company at the British Travel Awards 2019.

We know that some guests enjoy a more sociable experience with like-minded travellers, while others love the thrill of an independent adventure, so with us you can choose an escorted small group safari or an independent tailor-made safari where you’ll have your own private driver/guide.

Whether it’s your first trip to Africa or you just can’t stop going back, talk to us and we can help create the perfect tailor-made safari for you.
