MU Legends v Celtic Legends

Manchester united take on celtic.

Manchester United Foundation has signed some legendary players to take part in a charity match between Manchester United and Celtic at Old Trafford on 7th September.

Football icons like Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Antonio Valencia, Dimitar Berbatov, Nicky Butt, and Paul Scholes are among the star-studded lineup set to face the Celtic Legends, and you can buy tickets now .

Bryan Robson returns to the helm as the manager of the United Legends, going head-to-head with Celtic’s Paul Lambert. Andy Cole will also be back as assistant manager. Robson, a former United captain and a steadfast supporter of Manchester United Foundation, has been involved in every Legends match since the inaugural event in 2012.

Reflecting on his continued involvement, Robson shared, “Each time I've had the privilege of participating in these matches, the competitive spirit is always alive. The players may have retired, but their desire to win remains strong. We’ve had some incredible games over the years, and I’m thrilled to be managing the team once again.”

Dimitar Berbatov, who found the net against Liverpool in the 2022 Legends match, is equally excited about returning to Old Trafford.

“It’s always great to reunite with the boys, share some banter, play football, and most importantly, raise money for a worthy cause,” Berbatov said. “It’s wonderful that we, as former players, can contribute to the Foundation's various initiatives while doing what we love.”

  THE CAUSE

In May 2022, the Legends match against Liverpool raised over £1.3 million. All proceeds from this upcoming event will once again support the Foundation’s vital work with young people across Greater Manchester and beyond.

Manchester United Foundation offer a range of educational projects for young people in the local area. From educating youngsters about the inner workings of a football club to improving confidence, life skills and employability, our programmes are innovative and inspiring - everything you would expect from Manchester United. “ Greatest day of my life ”

Exhilarating

Manchester United Stadium Tour for Two Adults

“ Excellent Stadium Tour ”

Excellent Stadium Tour and Tour Guide. The guide was not only knowledgeable, but also kept the group entertained. I went with my 10 year old granddaughter, who was enthralled throughout the tour doing and seeing so many amazing things from going through the players tunnel and sitting in the dugout to getting 'lost' amongst the hundreds of magnificent trophies. The Stadium was clean and tidy, the tour was totally safe for all and each member of staff we came into contact with was most helpful.

Manchester United Foundation

Wayne rooney confirmed for legends match.

Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer will feature in Bryan Robson’s Legends squad for the first time in next month’s charity match against Celtic

Wayne Rooney is set to represent Manchester United’s Legends team for the first time when the Reds host Celtic at Old Trafford on 7 September.

Twenty years on from linking with up with United for the first time, when the then teenage sensation switched Goodison Park for Old Trafford in the summer of 2004, Rooney can now look forward to a second debut with the Red Devils – this time, a maiden outing lining up alongside fellow United legends.

One of the club’s greatest ever players, and all-time leading goalscorer, Rooney’s name is one to transcend generations of not just United fans, but lovers of football worldwide, as one of the brightest sparks to have graced the game.

After bursting onto the scene with his boyhood club Everton, Rooney spent 13 years at United, going on to win every club honour available to him along the way, not to mention countless individual awards, too.

In his first two years as a professional, a 16-year-old Rooney scored one of the Premier League’s most iconic goals with a wondrous last-minute winner against Arsenal, made his international debut just a few months later, and then stole the show for England at Euro 2004 – scoring four goals and earning a place in the team of the tournament.

Though injury kept him waiting for almost a month to make his United debut, his career only continued to reach new heights when he finally set about Old Trafford’s home team dressing room, after joining the Reds from Everton in August 2004.

Armoured with a rip to the collar of his shirt, and a fearlessness and self-assurance about his own ability, Rooney’s combination of physical and technical excellence was apparent as he soon as he stepped out at the Theatre of Dreams as a Reds player – netting an unbelievable hat-trick on his debut against Fenerbahce in M16.

Two of his three strikes that night came from outside the box, including a sumptuous free-kick, as he notched 17 times in his debut Old Trafford campaign – with another particularly memorable effort at the back-end of that season seeing him unleash a rocket of a volley in at the Stretford End against Newcastle, all the while continuing to contest a decision of the referee!

Rooney scored twice in the following season’s league cup final as he earned his first piece of silverware with the Reds, forming a formidable partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo – with their fearsome link-up play quickly becoming a key pillar of another fast-improving and ferociously attacking Sir Alex Ferguson side.

The 2006/07 campaign brought Rooney’s first Premier League title, scoring 20-plus goals in a season for the first time. The Manchester United machine kept on rolling, as Rooney again played a key role in 2007/08, when we retained our domestic title and memorably won the Champions League final against Chelsea in Moscow, with a Club World Cup title duly following in the 2008/09 season.

Rooney had admirers across the globe not only for his ability, but his selflessness and willingness to support his team-mates. He played in all manner of attacking roles – notably from the left in that Champions League final – but always provided goals, in the way of both quality and quantity.

He enjoyed two 30-plus-goal seasons between 2009-2012, and en route to regaining the league title in 2010/11, he scored perhaps his most famous goal as a Red: an over-head kick - both crucial and stunning in equal measure - to beat rivals Manchester City.

He became club captain in 2014, when Louis van Gaal took over as boss, and he was also awarded the armband at international level in 2016 by Roy Hodgson.

Rooney completed the set of club honours during his final two years as a Red, with FA Cup and Europa League successes to bring down the curtain on his magnificent 13-year spell with United – during which he made 559 appearances and superseded Sir Bobby Charlton’s previously unchallenged goalscoring record for the club, bettering his tally of 249 by four, with 253 goals.

Rooney represented Everton, DC United and Derby County in the final years of his playing career, before moving into management and taking charge of the latter two of those sides – and he’s now boss at Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle.

Rooney will temporarily switch the dugout for the pitch when he returns to Old Trafford as a player for the first time in seven years next month – and having previously spoken of his admiration for Celtic, the Scottish side provide an apt opponent.

United and Celtic have only faced off four times competitively in history, with all four meetings coming between 2006-2008 in Champions League affairs. Rooney featured on each occasion, scoring once against the SPL heavyweights.

The competitive edge will remain for the Legends match, but charity will be the name of the game this time around – with all funds raised going back into Manchester United Foundation and its work with young people in Greater Manchester and beyond.

Rooney was a staunch supporter of the Foundation during his time as a Red, and maintained a connection with our work following his retirement, most prominently through our Inclusive Reds programme.

It will be an extremely fond reunion for all involved when Rooney can once again take the acclaim of the Old Trafford crowd on 7 September – and you can be there to witness it, with tickets now on sale to all supporters.

Ethan Wheatley and Sam Mather of Manchester United applaud the fans after a pre-season friendly match between Manchester United v Real Betis at Sna...

Sam Mather signs new Manchester United contract, what’s next for FA Youth Cup winner

Manchester United have given a show of commitment to young talent Sam Mather, signing him to a new deal.

Earlier this year Sam Mather signed up to a new agency, SEG . It was a sign of a fresh start for the winger, one way or another. Was he gearing up for a permanent exit?

This cannot be ruled out, yet, Mather has just signed a new deal. An expected extension for Mather was reported in July. Now it’s official.

The young winger has been pictured putting pen to paper on a new contract which runs to 2027, with an option for a further year.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SM (@sammather.11)

Sam Mather has busy summer

Sam Mather had a busy summer, featuring during Manchester United’s pre-season campaign for the first time, and selected to go on tour in the US .

Mather did not make a meaningful impact in his limited minutes , yet simply playing with the first team squad and getting face time with the manager and coaching staff was valuable for him.

The teenager has begun the season in the under-21s, starting in the EFL Trophy game win away at Barnsley .

Mather seemed to flit in and out of the game, coming close with a long range free-kick from 30 yards out which tested the goalkeeper. He played 73 minutes before being replaced by Ethan Williams.

What is next for Sam Mather

Sam Mather was a FA Youth Cup winner alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo and played a key role in the team’s victory and wins through the competition.

Mather’s progress has been stunted a little by injuries since then, but he has been fit through 2024, and showed his quality with a four-goal haul for the under-21s against Norwich earlier this year.

The 19-year-old was sent on loan to Rochdale in February, where he scored his first ever professional goals, netting twice.

We now expect Mather to head out on loan, and this new contract sets him up to head out on a season-long deal.

The questions is where? Can Mather land a move somewhere in the Football League? And how high?

Or could Ineos try something more creative, similar to Radek Vitek’s loan to the Austrian top flight ?

How about a move to partner club Lausanne in Switzerland?

Mather needs a good season for his development, he needs to play, grow his confidence, and return stronger if he is to force his way into Erik ten Hag’s plans, and play alongside Garnacho and Mainoo again.

Wayne Rooney will play for the Manchester United Legends team for the first time when they face Celtic at Old Trafford on Saturday, September 7.

Rooney will return to Old Trafford to pull on the shirt 20 years after he first signed for the club from Everton, joining Bryan Robson's Legends squad alongside Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia.

The United Legends team regularly play fixtures but this is the first time Rooney, the club's record goalscorer, will feature for them. The game takes place during the September international break, which means Rooney, now manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle, will be available.

The game will raise funds for the Manchester United Foundation and a spokesperson said: "One of the club and country’s greatest ever players, Rooney’s name is one to transcend generations of not just United supporters, but football fans worldwide, as one of the most celebrated players to have graced the game.

"Wayne will temporarily switch the dugout for the pitch when he returns to Old Trafford as a player for the first time in seven years on 7th September – and having previously spoken of his admiration for Celtic, the Scottish side provides an apt opponent."

Rooney spent 13 years with United, scoring 253 goals in 559 games, which meant he bettered Sir Bobby Charlton's previous haul of 249 goals.

The forward went on to play for Everton, FC United and Derby County as he wound down his playing days and has made the leap into management. Plymouth is the fourth club on his CV and he joined the Pilgrims in May.

Tickets for the Legends game are on sale now and are available from tickets.manutd.com.
