The Wildebeest Migrate every year between  Serengeti in Tanzania  and  Masai Mara in Kenya . For most of the year, they graze in the southern-eastern part of the ecosystem. That coincides with the calving migration season. The wildebeest colonizes the southern Serengeti from November to May. Once depleted of the pastures, they trek northern towards the Northern Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. Join us on a Wildebeest Migration safari as we follow the herds.

Our Pride of East Africa Safari Stands Above the Rest!

  • A Rare Secluded Experience, away from Crowds There’s no question East Africa draws a lot of safari travelers. The abundant wildlife in the famous national parks of Kenya and Tanzania makes them duly popular destinations. That’s why we concentrate on private reserves where wildlife abounds but visitor numbers are strictly limited. We know you don't want to come all the way to East Africa to see a lion surrounded by 15 or 20 other safari vehicles. On the exclusive private conservancies we focus on, we'll be mostly alone with the animals.
  • An Itinerary Designed Around the Migration Many companies operate the same standard “migration safari" circuit year-round, with no concern to time specific locations with the arrival of the herds. We focus on the best time to see the animals, then build our itineraries and dates around that, attempting to time our presence for peak viewing. An integral feature is our mobile base camps, strategically positioned for proximity to where wildlife is most prolific at that season.
  • Exclusive Safari Activities on Private Reserves Most safaris stay within the main areas of the most popular national parks and reserves. In contrast, we choose remote small safari camps on private conservancies within the Maasai Mara and Serengeti ecosystems, away from big lodges and roads filled with vehicles. From these adjacent reserves, we have easy access to more remote sectors of the parks while also enjoying special privileges not allowed within their bounds, such as guided safari walks, off-road driving and night drives in search of nocturnal wildlife.
  • Meet the World's Last Two White Rhinos & Witness Conservation in Action Located on the Laikipia Plateau in the shadow of Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta is a working cattle ranch, which first set aside land for rhino conservation in 1988. Today this 90,000-acre preserve is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and home to Earth's last two northern white rhinos . Visit this pair of females with their guards, and learn about groundbreaking science that's being done to save their species.
  • Coveted Early Morning Access to Ngorongoro Crater We've designed our itinerary to make sure we are at the gate to enter Ngorongoro Crater the moment the reserve opens early in the morning. Our timing ensures a full day on safari in the crater, with an early arrival to beat the crowds. With expedited access to wildlife viewing on the crater floor early in the morning, we'll be there when many animals are most active.
  • Small Groups Mean Better Wildlife Encounters We travel with a maximum of  12 guests. Many East African safaris take groups of 20 or more, packed into cramped mini-buses. Small groups mean we get closer to the herds, have better photo opportunities, and our experience is enriched by personalized interpretation from our Expedition Leaders as we watch the wildlife action side by side.
  • Maximize Comfort & Time with Internal Flights  Many safari companies transport you to and from the bush by vehicle—meaning long, dusty drives over rough roads. We’ve included flights wherever possible, maximizing time for what you have come to East Africa for: wildlife viewing on safari.
  • Count on a Window Seat & Plenty of Space in Our Chartered Vehicles We limit the number in each safari vehicle to maximize comfort, and every traveler has a window seat for unimpeded views and photography—this is not the case with every safari operator.
  • The World's Finest Safari Guides Natural Habitat Adventures is known worldwide for employing the finest naturalist guides on the planet. In Kenya and Tanzania, our own Expedition Leaders  are with our groups from beginning to end. They are among the most highly trained guides in Africa, averaging more than 15 years' guiding experience and dedicated to sharing exceptional knowledge and highly personalized service. Their training is further enhanced with resources from WWF’s top scientists. See Expedition Leader bios  and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Superior Safari Experience Natural Habitat Adventures offers an exclusive guarantee, which clearly states that we will meet the lofty expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
  • Feel Good About Your Carbon-Neutral Journey We care deeply about our planet, as we know you do. When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. Natural Habitat Adventures has been the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company since 2007.

Just saying the names of East African safari destinations is bound to cause a serious case of wanderlust. Names like Serengeti and Masai Mara resonate with anyone who loves to travel, while less well-known places like Bwindi, Tarangire or Samburu offer the promise of unique, unforgettable safari experiences.

kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

East Africa Safari Destinations

Samburu is well known for the elephant research carried out there. © Shutterstock

Samburu is the ‘other Kenya’ – this semi-arid region in the north of the country feels very different to say the Masai Mara or Amboseli. It’s much drier and the scenery is more rugged. Even the wildlife is different, with species that aren’t found elsewhere in Kenya. What’s not to enjoy about Samburu safaris?

Ol Pejeta is a pioneering wildlife conservancy. © Shutterstock

Ol Pejeta is a pioneering wildlife conservancy in Laikipia – Kenya’s high country. With the emphasis firmly on species conservation, Ol Pejeta safaris offer not only exceptional opportunities to view species that are scarce elsewhere, but also to learn about, contribute to and even participate in ground-breaking and impactful conservation projects.

Ngorongoro Crater used to be a volcano. © iStock

Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater from one of the luxury lodges perched on its rim is one of the most remarkable safari experiences available in Tanzania. Driving across an ancient volcanic caldera, the wildlife may seem familiar, but the setting is quite unique, and this makes for wonderful photographic opportunities.

Mount Kilimanjaro guards Amboseli. © Shutterstock

Amboseli is known as Kenya’s land of giants, and it’s not hard to see why. Africa’s tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, towers over the national park, and it’s also one of the best places in East Africa to encounter elephant in numbers. No wonder people use superlatives to describe Amboseli safaris.

Tanzania is a wilderness paradise. © Shutterstock

Tanzania is an East African safari powerhouse, not least because in the Serengeti it features one of the greatest of all wilderness areas, and the backdrop for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. Factor in Indian Ocean Islands, too, and it’s clear that Tanzania safaris can be all things to all people.

Lions certainly rule the Masai Mara. © Shutterstock

The place that launched a thousand clips, and millions of images. There’s no more iconic safari destination than Kenya’s Masai Mara, with its eponymous tribespeople, millions of thundering hooves, and equal parts drama, magic and romance. Kenya itineraries without Masai Mara safaris are almost unthinkable, and every moment spent there is unforgettable.

Uganda is famed for its mountain gorilla. © Shutterstock

Uganda, an East African country known as ‘the pearl of Africa’, offers the warmest of welcomes and an incredible diversity of wildlife experiences. Uganda safaris can include savannah and mountain moments, excursions into cloud forests and discovering the source of the Nile. It’s this variety of habitats that explains Uganda’s remarkable biodiversity.

At times, Lake Elmenteita appears glass like. © Shutterstock

Lake Elmenteita offers a more secluded safari destination than either of its neighbouring lakes (Naivasha and Nakuru), which can make it feel more exclusive. The unique volcanic landscape adds to the sense of being wonderfully removed from all that’s unimportant – and the unusual wildlife species seen on Lake Elmenteita safaris only reinforce this impression.

Beautiful giraffes roam the Serengeti. © Shutterstock

The Serengeti takes its name from a Maasai word meaning ‘where the land runs on forever’. It’s one of the most evocative and iconic safari destinations of all – not least because it’s the stage on which much of the drama of the Great Wildebeest Migration is played out each year.

Giraffe find refuge in Kenya's conservation areas. © iStock

Kenya has as good a claim as anywhere to being the country where modern safaris began, and where they’re done best, and it still regularly features high on travel magazines ‘must-visit’ lists. Kenya has been doing what it does best for decades, and yet there’s always something new to discover on Kenya safaris.

Mountain gorillas are at home in Rwanda's wild places. © Shutterstock

Rwanda has completed a remarkable transformation as a nation and has reinvented itself as a superb safari vacation destination. Rwanda safaris have traditionally focused on mountain gorilla encounters, but visits to the land of a thousand hills also offer more conventional – but no less remarkable – safari experiences, plus insights into its rich cultural heritage.

Safaris in Volcanoes National Park enable an entry into the unique ecosystem on which the gorilla depend. © Shutterstock

Volcanoes National Park is perhaps the quintessential Rwandan safari destination, and one of only a handful of places where iconic mountain gorilla can be encountered at close quarters. Volcanoes safaris enable an entry into the unique ecosystem on which the gorilla depend – a world of soaring summits and mysterious, misty forests.

You'll never forget seeing a silverback mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. © iStock

Despite its name, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is not quite as inaccessible as might be imagined. Indeed, given that the forest contains around half of all the world’s remaining mountain gorilla, Bwindi safaris are actually perfect for travellers wanting to experience one of Africa’s most moving and engaging species up close and personal.

Lake Naivasha's shore is full of game. © Shutterstock

Lake Naivasha safaris take you to a literal and metaphorical oasis, offering a change of pace without any reduction in wildlife-viewing opportunities. Renowned for its spectacular birdlife, Naivasha nevertheless has a number of other feathers in its cap. While easily reached from Nairobi, it feels a million miles from the hustle of the city.

Picking the Perfect Season: Best Time to Embark on a Kenya Tanzania Safari

Safari in Kenya

The Ideal Time For Your Visit

Kenya and Tanzania, two gemstones of East Africa, offer varying climates throughout the year. As a safari guide might advice, the season you choose can drastically influence your experience. Dry seasons, from late June to October and January to February , offer optimum wildlife viewing with less vegetation obscuring your sight.

Serengeti National Park, Serengeti, Tanzania

The Great Migration Timing

The grand spectacle, The Great Migration , is a scene like no other. From July to September , a mesmerizing display of over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move between the Serengeti in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya. If a Kenya and Tanzania safari tour is on your bucket list, timing it with this natural wonder is a must.

Yet, every season has its charm; a Kenya safari might allure with calving in February, while a Tanzania safari entices with predator action during migration. Regardless of when you plan your Kenya and Tanzania tour, nature’s raw beauty promises to captivate.

Dive deep into Kenya’s pristine wilderness at the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Often highlighted by any seasoned safari guide, this reserve stands as a crowning jewel of Kenya safaris. Less commonly known, the Mara offers unique nocturnal safaris, unveiling a secretive world where nature’s nocturnes come alive.

Two Adult Lions, Serengeti National Park, Serengeti, Tanzania

The Serengeti National Park

Across the border, Tanzania offers the vast expanse of The Serengeti National Park. While many associate this park with the Great Migration, fewer realize that it houses one of the largest lion populations globally. A Kenya and Tanzania safari tour bridges the experience of both these iconic locations, showcasing diverse ecosystems.

Experiencing the Delightful Kenya and Tanzania Cuisine

Kenya’s Signature Dish: Ugali

Kenya’s Signature Dish: Ugali

Paired often with sukuma wiki (collard greens) or Nyama Choma (grilled meat), it captures the essence of Kenyan comfort food. Each bite not only offers a taste of home-cooked goodness but also provides insights into Kenya’s culinary heritage. It’s a must-try during any Kenya safari, adding a flavor-packed experience.

Zanzibar Pizza

Tanzania’s Culinary Gem: Zanzibar Pizza

Tanzania surprises with its Zanzibar Pizza, a delightful street food unique to the islands. Unlike any traditional pizza, this treat is a blend of meat, veggies, and egg wrapped in thin dough, fried to perfection. It’s a testament to Tanzania’s blend of cultures and flavors. Kenya Safari

Accommodation, Travel, and Guided Tours

When budgeting, consider three pivotal aspects: where you’ll rest after a day’s adventure, your travel logistics within and between Kenya and Tanzania, and the expertise of your chosen kenya tanzania safari guide. Opting for package Kenya and Tanzania tours can sometimes provide better value, merging accommodation, travel, and guided explorations into one cohesive, memorable experience.

Daily Costs and Budgeting Tips

nyama choma

Daily Expenses: Food, Travel, and More

When exploring Kenya and Tanzania, daily expenses are more than just accommodation. Savory local dishes, intra-region travel, and unexpected souvenirs can quickly add up. Sample traditional meals like “ugali” or “nyama choma” in Kenya, and perhaps “chapati” or “ndizi kaanga” in Tanzania. Additionally, consider the costs of short flights, local taxis, or buses connecting popular safari destinations.

Eco-friendly Travel

The Importance of Eco-friendly Travel

Safaris have become synonymous with the Kenya and Tanzania tour experience. With the surge in popularity, the commitment to eco-friendly travel is paramount. It’s less of a commonly known fact that sustainable lodges and camps in these regions use solar energy and rainwater harvesting. Opting for such accommodations can significantly reduce your carbon footprint on your next Kenya or Tanzania safari.

Leave No Trace Principle

Leave No Trace Principles in Safaris

While the role of a safari guide is to enhance your experience, their teachings on Leave No Trace principles are golden. These guidelines, although simple—like not feeding animals or littering—ensure the pristine nature of the wild remains undisturbed for future Kenya and Tanzania tours.

When embarking on a Kenya and Tanzania safari tour, your choices matter. Through sustainable practices, every traveler can play a part in safeguarding the treasured ecosystems of Kenya and Tanzania.

Travel Considerations: Health, Safety, and Visas

Embarking on a Kenya and Tanzania safari tour is the stuff of dreams. Yet, beneath the majestic wildlife encounters, meticulous planning ensures your journey is magical and worry-free. Dive into the essentials that shape the perfect Kenyan or Tanzanian experience.

Furthermore, respecting local customs and etiquettes not only safeguards your experience but also deepens your connection with the destination.

Thorough preparation is the cornerstone of adventure. Let Allied Travel be your compass, guiding your Kenya or Tanzania safari to be an unforgettable, hassle-free journey.

Starts Nairobi/Ends Nairobi – We’ll pick you up from the airport or your hotel. Travel comfortably in your own private 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep.

Enjoy this amazing safari in a customized pop-up roof 4×4 Safari Jeep that includes: Cooler Box, long-range high-frequency radio, Power Outlets AC 230V, First Aid Kit, and above all, a professional multi-lingual safari guide   who will ensure you have an unforgettable safari experience.

Imagine two weeks of safari discovery! You’ll get to explore the depth and beauty of East Africa’s game parks in a manner few will ever know. There will be lots of time for viewing wildlife, soaking up the beauty of the land, and connecting with the local cultures. This is a complete yet comfortably paced journey.

Over the course of this two-week adventure, you’ll get to experience Kenya’s finest parks up close plus the immense sweep of Tanzania’s Serengeti. From the iconic Masai Mara to the world-famous Ngorongoro volcanic crater, from Lake Naivasha to Lake Manyara, you will journey through the richest landscapes of Africa while encountering literally hundreds of species of wildlife.

Get ready to begin your perfect adventure on Natural World Safaris ’ biggest and most complete safari.

We start out heading northwest, passing Mt. Kenya as we travel on to Ol Pejeta Conservancy . This private reserve is well known for its large population of black rhinos and its chimpanzee sanctuary. But you’ll also find the big cats here as well as buffalo and other plains wildlife.

Next up our 4 x 4 takes us to Samburu National Reserve . This is a rugged but scenic park and you’ll find many unusual species like Somali ostrich, oryx, and reticulated giraffe stalking these expansive plains. You’ll also have the option of visiting nearby Shaba and Buffalo Springs Reserves. Shaba was the setting for the films Born Free and Out of Africa .

We’ll shift gears at our next reserve – Aberdare National Park is a cool upcountry respite with thick forests, mountain streams, and waterfalls. From your elevated “tree hotel” you’ll spot buffalo and elephants emerging from the woods below.

You can partake in several types of safaris at our next destination, Lake Naivasha National Park . Gliding the blue lake on a water safari, you’ll sail by hippo with giraffe and zebra along the shore. At Crescent Island, we’ll take a guided walking safari amongst the giraffe, zebra, impala, and waterbuck. And if you choose, there’s also an optional visit and bike ride through Hell’s Gate National Park .

Picture Africa and most likely images of the Masai Mara Reserve will come to mind. Great vistas of rolling grassland accented with distinctive acacia trees and thundering herds of wildebeest announce you’ve arrived at this world-famous park. Here, the big cats roam including lion, leopard, and cheetah.

The density and variety of wildlife here can be agreeably overwhelming with zebra, giraffe, monkey, baboon, and hundreds of bird species. If you wish, join several optional activities like guided nature walks or a visit to one of the Masai homesteads to meet and learn about these indigenous people.

We’ll also have a picnic lunch at the Mara River, the site of the great migration where millions of animals cross during the season.

Then, we cross into Tanzania to arrive at its greatest park, the world-famous Serengeti National Park . The immense vistas hold a wonder of wildlife – easily two million creatures await your arrival. All the big game are here stalking these savannahs – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, plus hartebeest, waterbuck, crocodile, and the heart of the great migration – wildebeest.

Within the Serengeti region lies one of the most unusual land formations anywhere – the Ngorongoro Crater . This huge caldera is the remains of an extinct 3 million-year-old volcano. But what’s more amazing are the wildlife treasures awaiting down on the crater floor. You will descend to this isolated world to view an awesome concentration of lion, buffalo, rhino, wildebeest, zebra, eland, gazelle, and much more.

Next up, your choice of two special but little touristed parks – Tarangire or Lake Manyara . Come to Tarangire to view its multitude of elephants and a mini migration of big cats, zebra, warthogs, ostriches, and more. Lake Manyara will dazzle with its thousands of pink flamingoes and tree-climbing lions!

Now it’s time to cross back into Kenya as the great vista of Mt. Kilimanjaro comes into view. We’re traveling to Amboseli National Park . This is the best place in Africa to view elephants in the wild. But also, be ready to spot lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffe and zebra. The rich ecosystem here with towering Kilimanjaro in the background is a perfect end for your two-week safari holiday. Then it’s back to Nairobi.

All-Inclusive. Your Two-Week Safari includes park entrance fees, accommodations, and meals. Natural World Safaris always offers a wide choice of accommodations. Depending on your budget and style choose from economy, comfort, or luxury safari lodges or tented camps.

Your Guide . For your entire 14-day journey you’ll be guided, hosted, and looked after by your own experienced driver/guide.

East Africa - Kenya & Tanzania Tour in 14 Days

7:00 am –  Your Natural World Kenya Safaris driver/guide will come to your hotel, the international airport, or another place of your choosing to pick you up in a private 4 x 4 Jeep. Climb aboard and your two-week safari begins!

NAIROBI – OL PEJETA (208 km – appx. 4 hrs.)

Meal Plan: Lunch, Dinner

Heading north, we’ll pass Mt. Kenya on our way to Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

At the park, you’ll find a wonderful assortment of large and small game – all of the “Big Five” and also more rarely seen species like the African wild dog and the chimpanzee.

We can visit the special rhino sanctuary, protecting these rare and endangered creatures

We’ll spend the evening at your choice of Ol Pejeta safari lodge or tented camp.

OL PEJETA – SAMBURU (131 Km – Appx. 2.5 hrs.)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Take a scenic route via the central highlands to the  Samburu National Reserve  in the semi-arid northern frontier of Kenya.

Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo springs game reserves are a place of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers.

The reserves lie on the fringes of the vast and arid desert once known as the Northern Frontier District.

The combined landscape of the Samburu game reserve features rocky battlements, craggy scarps, dry river beds and fallen boulders rising out of the thorn scrub against a backdrop of the far-distant hills and the great red Table Mountain known as Ololokwe.

Overnight at your Samburu lodge or tented camp.

FULL DAY AT SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE

Samburu game reserve.

Day spent at the Samburu game reserve with game viewing drives.

Game viewing is concentrated along the Ewaso Nyiro River, the lifeline of this semi desert environment.

You can explore further the adjacent Shaba & Buffalo springs reserves.

SAMBURU – ABERDARE PARK (221 Km – Appx. 4 hrs.)

Aberdare Park is different – not your usual African safari with its sun-baked savannah or rolling hills. Here we’re up-country – think rich green forests, waterfalls, and mountain lakes.

Even our lodging is different here – you’ll be staying in a “Tree Lodge”, high above the park’s forests and its moorlands. From your balcony look for elephants, hyenas, buffalo, warthogs, and monkeys, strutting or scampering out from the forest to the nearby watering holes.

Though not too common, there have been sightings of rarities like the golden cat, giant forest hog, and the bongo, an unusually large antelope.

Overnight at the Ark Lodge.

Note: only overnight bags are allowed at your tree hotel.

ABERDARE – LAKE NAIVASHA ( 88 km. Approx. 3 hrs.)

Our 4 x 4 will next take us to lovely Lake Naivasha , a freshwater retreat with surrounding green lands harboring antelope, zebra, and more.

Want to go on a bicycling safari? Nearby Hell’s Gate Park offers the chance to do just that! Pedal past zebra, giraffe, and antelope for a very unique perspective as they graze just feet away.

We’ll spend the night at your Lake Naivasha safari lodge or tented camp of your choice.

LAKE NAIVASHA – MASAI MARA (285 km Appx. 5-6 Hrs.)

Let’s begin our day with a fun boating safari over the lake’s smooth waters, gliding by curious hippos as we take in the grazing impala and buffalo on the shore.

More explorations await at the close-by Crescent Island Game Sanctuary. This private reserve treats us to quiet closeup views of waterbuck, wildebeest, gazelle, and much more in this special out-of-the-way park.

We’ve had a busy week so far, but our African safari is about to get a lot more intense. Get ready for Kenya’s most popular park, the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve.

After we arrive at the park, we should have time for an afternoon game drive. You’ll get a feel for this green sprawling park, adorned with Africa’s distinctive acacia trees.

The Mara is a busy ecosystem, one of the richest in East Africa. During your time here don’t be surprised to see great numbers of wildlife in a variety not experienced elsewhere.

We’ll spend the next two nights at the Masai Mara at our safari lodge or tented camp.

FULL OF DAY OF GAME DRIVES AT MASAI MARA

Today is a day of unlimited safari action. You will have the opportunity to take part in as many game drives as you wish. The Masai Mara is famous for its many prides of lions, leopards, and cheetahs, plus uncountable grazers.

During the season of the Great Migration (July – October) get ready to witness the largest movement of animals on the planet. You’ll be treated to immense herds of wildebeests, zebras, gazelle, and even more flooding into the park from the neighboring Serengeti.

We will visit the Mara River, site of the great herds’ crossing where they must traverse the treacherous currents and even more threatening crocodiles that lay in wait.

Of course, most of the crossing wildlife makes it through but the drama here is unmatched. And then, once in the park, these masses of migrating animals must evade the numerous big cats that depend on them for their own survival.

We offer several optional experiences to enhance your safari. Enjoy a cultural moment with the local Maasai people. Visit their village and learn about these pastoral people closeup. And perhaps get some of their beaded handiwork as souvenirs.

Ever been on a balloon safari? Take an optional early morning hot air balloon over the park as the land and the animals come to life in the dawning light of the new day. Your driver/guide will be happy to arrange this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Our final night at the Masai Mara will be at your safari lodge or tented camp.

MASAI MARA  – SERENGETI  (139 Km – Appx. 3 – 4 hrs.)

Let’s enjoy one more game drive through this bountiful reserve before we cross the border into Tanzania to visit another world-class park, Serengeti National Park .

Remember all those wildebeests and zebra herding into the Masai Mara? This is the park from which they came, searching for taller grasses and water for their survival.

The Serengeti is immense with boundless wildlife, big cats and elephants by the thousands, and grazers…  up to several million.

We will have many opportunities to view this wildlife over our three days in this immense park.

We’ll spend the next two nights at Serengeti at our safari lodge or tented camp.

FULL OF DAY OF GAME DRIVES AT SERENGETI

Today, we will have plenty of time to explore the reaches of this world-famous reserve. Besides the big cats, zebras, and wildebeests, we’ll be looking for all manner of wildlife such as honey badger, otter, African wild dog, mongoose, monkey, eland, impala, hippo, and warthog.

Should you be here during the calving season, (January – March) prepare to witness the most amazing scene of up to 500,000 wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle newborns dropping onto the fields.

If you wish, we will also explore the park’s forests and marshlands looking for hippos and crocodiles.

Our second night at Serengeti will be at your safari lodge or tented camp.

SERENGETI  – NGORONGORO  (227 Km – Appx. 4 – 5 hrs.)

Our expedition continues as we turn toward another wonder of the world, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with its magnificent caldera basin.

Along the way, we will make a stop at Olduvai Gorge , perhaps the greatest archeological site in the world. Great caches of early humankind’s tools and artifacts have been discovered here, illustrating our physical and social development from millions of years ago.

Arriving at the Ngorongoro Crater, we’ll take in the vast expanse of the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera – 263 sq km (101 sq mi). This ecosystem is cut off from the rest of Africa, filled with green woodlands, swamp, and grasslands that is home to over 25,000 animals.

We’ll descend the steep crater walls in our Jeep and spend an action-filled day tracking for big cats, black rhinos, buffalo, and even pink flamingoes on the shores of Ngorongoro’s Lake Magadi.

As the day begins to wane, we’ll head back up the crater and take in one of Ngorongoro’s spectacular sunsets at the crater’s rim.

We will spend the night at our Ngorongoro safari lodge or tented camp.

NGORONGORO  – TARANGIRE OR LAKE MANYARA (180 Km – Appx. 4 hrs.)

Tarangire park.

You will enjoy this lightly touristed park as it is short on other safari-goers and long on wildlife. This park even has its own smaller migration – about 250,000 animals. Look for lions, leopards, elephants, impalas, warthogs, ostriches, and lots more.

And during your game drives here you can’t miss the park’s famous baobab trees – a highly unusual species with an inverted trunk and wild branches that resemble a root structure. The poor tree appears like it was planted upside down.

Lake Manyara Park

Another lightly touristed park, Lake Manyara delights its visitors with its signature flocks of bright flamingoes feeding at the lake’s shoreline, creating a living carpet of fluttering pink feathers. The birdlife here is rich and you’ll also find egrets, spoonbill, and heron.

The park’s wooded areas are just as enchanting, gifted with Africa’s very special acacia trees. And sometimes if you look up, you’ll find resting felines on the acacia branches. The park is known for these very unique tree-climbing lions!

We will spend the evening at our Tarangire or Lake Manyara lodge or tented camp with lots of stories of our two-week exploration.

TARANGIRE/MANYARA  – AMBOSELI PARK (255 Km – Appx. 4 hrs.)

Today we will return to Kenya and head to its second most popular reserve, Amboseli Park , resting near the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. On route, the snow-capped peak of the great peak will be our beacon, guiding us to the park.

Often called the “Land of the Giants”, Amboseli is home to a multitude of elephant families which you are guaranteed to see as they amble to their favorite feeding spots and watering holes.

The park hosts all the “big five”, so we’ll also be tracking for lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos during our stay here.

We will spend the first of two nights at our Amboseli lodge or tented camp.

FULL DAY OF SAFARI ACTION AT AMBOSELI

As with the Masai Mara and Serengeti, this is a day of unlimited game drives. Explore as much as you wish.

Amboseli is a compact park which makes game spotting easier as the rangers are well-informed about where certain wildlife can be seen.

Besides the big game, we’ll undoubtedly discover some of the smaller species as they roam the park, like zebra, fox, monkey, baboon, and more. The reserve is also known for its variety and number of avian life – look for heron, falcon, eagle, and the Egyptian goose accenting the skies and the marshes here.

An ideal place to spot the animals and birdlife is on Observation Hill , an excellent vantage point that we’ll drive up to view the park’s wild inhabitants in all directions.

Toward evening, we may be lucky and the mists covering Kilimanjaro’s snowy summit could part revealing one of Africa’s most memorable sights.

We will spend a second night and our final safari evening at our Amboseli safari lodge or tented camp.

AMBOSELI – NAIROBI: (250 KM: APPROX. 4-5 HRS.)

Meal Plan: Breakfast, lunch.

Early pre-breakfast game viewing drive in search of the predators and grazers.

Extra exit game viewing drive as you leave Amboseli.

Depart Amboseli for Nairobi to arrive in the late afternoon.

Transfer to your Nairobi hotel / Nairobi airport for your outbound flight

From the northern reaches of Ol Pejeta and Samburu to the southern savannahs of the Masai Mara and Serengeti, to the depths of Ngorongoro and heights of Kilimanjaro, you have seen and experienced the best of East Africa.

We hope you had as much fun as we did showing you our parks and reserves. From all of us at Natural World Kenya Safaris , thank you for your passion, your time, and your curiosity about our magnificent world of safari.

It’s the bucket list break with wildlife and wilderness – and the safari holiday continues to elevate game reserve glamping to new levels of luxury.

But with big-name safari destinations spanning Africa and treks to see tigers and jaguars in Asia and South America , choosing the right canvas to tuck in for the night can be a challenge.

There are tents supporting conservation projects, desert sanctuaries and treetop lodges to zip into after jeep rides rolling with the prides, herds and packs.

Think private watering holes, sundowner cocktails and barbeque campfires with high-end creature comforts weaved into close encounters with the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo).

With grand lodges from Kenya to India , here are the top camps to go wild for on your next safari.

Madikwe Safari Lodge, South Africa

Best for: spotting the big five.

Make your way to Madikwe for a seriously swanky safari

The South African bush provides one of the best safari settings in the world, and at Madikwe Safari Lodge the chances of seeing the Big Five are high. There are three lodgings – family-friendly Lelapa, intimate Kopano and deluxe Dithaba – as well as a spa, restaurant and bar. All-inclusive dining experiences are plenty beneath the thatched roofs, while plunge pool dips promise unrivalled views of the plains.

Hotel Amenities

Health & wellbeing, shipwreck lodge, namibia, best for: desert discovery.

Shipwreck Lodge is a unique safari stay on the Skeleton Coast

For a stay on Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, Shipwreck Lodge features wooden rooms that mirror stranded ships. Even in the desolate environment, hardy elephants, lions and brown hyenas wander near the eco ‘wreck’ of 10 cosy cabins and sandboarding, quad biking and beach lunches are all on the itinerary.

Puku Ridge, Zambia

Best for: leopard lovers.

The South Luangwa National Park is primed for walking safaris

If it's leopards you’re trying to spot, Puku Ridge could be your perfect stay – it sits in the South Luangwa National Park, otherwise known as ‘Valley of the Leopards’. Local art blends with classic safari-style furnishings – of course, khaki and beige – in the Zambian lodge’s eight tents with plunge pools and a communal campfire overlooking the plains and lively local watering hole.

Wilderness Jao, Botswana

Best for: bush interiors.

Recycled steel, wood and glass built the Botswana safari lodging

Botswana’s Wilderness Jao has unrivalled game-viewing on land and water in the Okavango Delta. Here, antelope meet zebra, and hippos swim shallow lagoons. Inside, recycled wood and glass designs bring the wild to the five safari suites, the library and the museum, and there’s even a star bed experience to get some shut-eye under the African sky after a mokoro canoe ride.

Mara Plains Camp, Kenya

Best for: wildlife photographers.

Stay at Mara Plains to snap the best big cat shot

In the Olare Motorogi Conservancy on the boundary of the Maasai Mara , Mara Plains’ safari suites ooze old-world opulence with rich accents, canopied ceilings and copper bathtubs. Budding photographers will find a professional camera and a selection of lenses for shooting images of wildlife – particularly hippos and leopards – and you won’t have to go far before a big cat poses on your path.

Cherero Camp, Tanzania

Best for: the great wildebeest migration.

The wildebeest migrate from the Serengeti into the Masai Mara to follow the rainfall

Forget the king of the jungle, Tanzania is often hailed as the king of the safari – with the Serengeti the stage for the annual Great Wildebeest Migrations to and from the Masai Mara. At Cherero Camp, six tented suites champion a slow safari experience with tipples on their private verandas. Think guided walks, golden hour drives and campfire stories deep in the Musabi Plains.

SUJÁN Sher Bagh, India

Best for: trekking with tigers.

The Ranthambore National Park is a haven for Bengal tigers

Away from Africa, Ranthambore in India is a haven for wild tigers. Here, game drives travel the ancient forest past ruins and palaces in search of the ultimate big cat. Better still, SUJÁN Sher Bagh’s 12 tented jungle suites have private verandahs to search the surrounding canopy for the swish of an orange tail while waiting to feast on an Indian farm-to-table dinner cooked in a clay oven.

Tembo Plains Camp, Zimbabwe

Best: conservation camp.

The canvas and stone wall design is a nod to the Zimbabwe Ruins

On the Zambezi River, the Tembo Camp – or elephant camp in Swahili – sits within 128,000 hectares of wildlife conservation land. Aside from the show-stealing trunked giants, you’ll find painted dogs, lions and leopards paddling the waters of the Zambezi, and guests can spend afternoons playing games of cricket on the river’s banks before cosying up in one of four spacious double suites.

kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

The best places — and best times — to take a safari

In some African cultures, the combination of rain and sunshine means that a leopard and a lioness have given birth to a cub.

I was hoping that this was the case as we traversed Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve in a four-wheel drive jeep in the midst of a sunny downpour.

In the seven years that I've been a travel journalist in Africa, the game drive experience has always been one of my favorites.  Wildlife is Africa's treasure, and tourists revel in watching the animals — particularly the cats — in their natural habitats.

There are 10 countries in Africa that have a strong wildlife focus: Kenya (my motherland), Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, Mozambique, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Namibia and Rwanda.

Here are highlights that I recommend.

For more than 25 years, professional safari guide Geoff Mayes has taken tourists to the best parks in Africa. He believes that many choose Kenya — and in particular, Maasai Mara — for their first trip to Africa because it's safe and fairly accessible.

"It's easier to catch flights to Kenya, making it high on peoples' bucket list," he said. "Also a game drive experience in Kenya will be able to meet the travelers' expectations in terms of catching 'the Big Five.'"

Less than an hour from the capital city of Nairobi is Nairobi National Park, where there's a good chance of seeing lions and rhinos, he said.

And "if you come to the Maasai Mara, you'll see the elephants and leopards and lions," he explained as we drove through it.

In total, Kenya has 25 national parks and 16 national game reserves with countless private conservancies, which are smaller, private-owned wildlife reserves.

Amboseli National Park is known for its massive elephant population and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. It was added to UNESCO's Tentative List in June 2023, which lists properties that countries intend to consider for nomination to the World Heritage List.

Tsavo National Park, Kenya's biggest park, is one of the world's largest game sanctuaries. It was highlighted by President Barack Obama in the five-part Netflix docuseries " Our Great National Parks ."

South Africa

Kenya is not the only country where I've gone on game drives.

South Africa is another and is home to some of the oldest and most iconic national parks in Africa. It's a year-round safari destination, but the best game-viewing conditions are in the cooler winter months from May to September.

There are 20 national parks, including the world - famous Kruger National Park — which has Africa's "Big Five" game animals: lions, leopards, elephants, rhino and buffaloes.

There's also Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, near the border of Botswana, and Pilanesberg National Park . The latter is about 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Johannesburg. It's smaller than Kruger, but rich in wildlife — and, fascinatingly, it's inside the crater of an ancient volcano believed to be some 1.2 billion years old.

Another highlight, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park , has the "Big Five" as well as a thriving population of African wild dogs.

I've also been to Addo — the biggest park in the Eastern Cape and third-largest in South Africa — which is famous for its elephants. According to Ncediso Headman Nogaya, a game guard at Addo , October to April is the best time to visit.

"We are more likely to receive rains from May to September and while the season is great because it gives food to the wildlife … it might be a slippery drive and muddy," he noted.

Uganda is known for its diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes in its 10 national parks and 12 game reserves. Of the national parks, seven are located on savannahs and three in forests. In those three, one can track mountain gorillas in Mgahinga National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park .

My favorite memories at Queen Elizabeth National Park are of tracking chimpanzees in Kyambura Gorge, watching tree-climbing lions and a herd of elephants walking majestically on the plains, and observing buffaloes, warthogs, hippos and Nile crocodiles while cruising the Kazinga Channel.

Another park to consider is the Kidepo Valley National Park , with its sweeping plains and valleys overshadowed by the brooding Mount Morungole. The mountain is sacred to the Ik tribe, one of the smallest tribes in Uganda. The park ranks among the best birding safari destinations in the country too.

I loved my game drive experience at Lake Mburo National Park, even though it's one of the smallest national parks in the country.

It's the only park where travelers can enjoy boat cruises, walking safaris and horseback riding, tour operator Dennis Kahungu told CNBC Travel.

Plus "it's the only national park in Uganda with the impalas," he said. "It's also where you will find the big horned Ankole cows."

Located in eastern Rwanda, Akagera National Park is a protected wetland and the last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species in Rwanda. Park visitors can take boat safaris along Lake Ilhema, the second largest lake in Rwanda, for wildlife and birdwatching.

Travelers in search of mountain gorillas usually go to Volcanoes National Park in the northern part of the country. It's also home to golden monkeys, and well regarded for hiking and mountain climbing.

Recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Nyungwe National Park is another part to explore and is situated in southwest Rwanda and is known for its chimpanzees and colobus monkeys. It's also popular for canopy walks on a suspended bridge some 70 meters (230 feet) above the forest floor.

While the parks can be visited all year round, it's best to avoid April, as that's when Rwanda typically receives heavy rains.

Botswana is a fast-emerging ecotourism destination — visitors are drawn to the vast elephant herds of Chobe National Park and the canoe-based wildlife safaris in the Okavango Delta.

One can also see the "Big Five" at Moremi Nature Reserve, Nxai Pan National Park, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park as well as Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

In Tanzania, I visited the iconic UNESCO-listed Serengeti National Park, which rivals Kenya for one of the best wildlife experiences in Africa.

My first time there was during the calving season when the wildebeests and the zebras give birth on their way to Kenya during the Great Migration.

Another wonder is the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the largest calderas in the world.

Some consider it one of the best places to go on safari in Africa.

Apart from the renowned Hwange National Park, I have also visited Matobo National Park, which has a wide diversity of fauna and plenty of white rhinos. The area around Matobo Hills is home to the remains of early settlements and the graves of historical figures like Cecil Rhodes.

The best time to visit the parks is during the dry season, from June to October. That's when the bush is thinner — making wildlife easier to spot.

Mayes said the best time for safaris in Kenya and Tanzania is, of course, during the migration season. But he recommends visiting Zimbabwe and Zambia from July to October.

In other parts of the continent, months like February, June and September can be very rewarding too.

"The wildlife is fantastic and there are fewer vehicles around," he said. "And you can often benefit from a low season price structure which of course is always nice."

Correction: This article has been updated to reflect the distance between Nairobi and Nairobi National Park, and to reflect Amboseli National Park's status on UNESCO's Tentative List for world heritage consideration.

Seven safari destinations you MUST check out in Africa

Africa’s safari destinations offer wildlife experiences like no other. Here are seven prime safari spots to visit in Africa…

safari

Africa is a continent of unparalleled beauty, rich in diverse landscapes, vibrant cultures, and some of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on Earth. For those with a thirst for adventure, a safari in Africa offers a chance to witness nature in its rawest form. Here are five must-visit African safari destinations that promise unforgettable encounters with the wild…

1. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

safari

The Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is one of the world’s most renowned safari destinations, celebrated for its incredible biodiversity and cultural heritage. The reserve is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, particularly during the annual Great Migration. Between July and October, over a million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles journey across the Mara River in a perilous trek from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara, a spectacle often referred to as the “World Cup of Wildlife.”

Visitors to the Masai Mara can also expect to see the “Big Five” – lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos – in their natural habitat. The open savannahs make it easier to spot these majestic creatures.

The best time to visit is from July to October.

2. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is synonymous with safari, known worldwide for its vast, endless plains that stretch as far as the eye can see. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is teeming with wildlife, making it one of Africa’s most iconic safari destinations. The Serengeti is famous for its large predator populations, including lions, cheetahs, and leopards, which can often be seen stalking their prey across the plains.

The best time to visit is from June to October.

3. Kruger National Park, South Africa

As one of Africa’s largest and most accessible game reserves, Kruger National Park in South Africa offers a safari experience that combines adventure with comfort. With a well-maintained infrastructure of roads, camps, and lodges, Kruger is ideal for both first-time safari-goers and seasoned travellers. The park is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including the Big Five, as well as over 500 species of birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

The best time to visit is from May to September.

4. Okavango Delta, Botswana

kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a unique and breathtakingly beautiful safari destination. Unlike the savannahs of East Africa, the Okavango is an inland delta, creating a lush, water-rich ecosystem that attracts an incredible variety of wildlife. During the seasonal floods, the delta transforms into a labyrinth of waterways, lagoons, and islands, making it one of the best places in Africa for water-based safaris.

Exploring the Okavango Delta by mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, is an experience like no other. Gliding silently through the crystal-clear waters, visitors can get up close to animals such as hippos, crocodiles, and an array of bird species.

5. Etosha National Park, Namibia

Etosha National Park in Namibia offers a safari experience that is distinct from other African destinations. The park’s most striking feature is the Etosha Pan, a vast, shimmering salt flat that covers nearly a quarter of the park’s area. During the dry season, the pan is a dramatic, white expanse where animals congregate around waterholes, making wildlife viewing easier and more predictable.

Etosha is particularly well-suited for photography enthusiasts, as the stark landscapes and abundant wildlife provide stunning opportunities for capturing memorable images. The park is home to elephants, lions, giraffes, and even the endangered black rhino. With its accessible roads and well-equipped rest camps, Etosha offers a unique and self-contained safari experience.

The best time to visit is from May to October.

6. Chobe National Park, Botswana

safari

Chobe National Park, located in northern Botswana, is famous for its massive elephant population, which is one of the largest concentrations of elephants in Africa. The park’s diverse ecosystems range from lush floodplains and dense forests to dry savannahs, providing a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.

One of the park’s highlights is the Chobe River, where visitors can enjoy boat safaris that offer a unique perspective on wildlife viewing. From the water, you can observe elephants bathing, hippos wallowing, and crocodiles basking on the riverbanks. Chobe is also home to lions, leopards, buffaloes, and a rich array of birdlife, making it a top destination for both wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers.

7. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda

For those seeking a more intimate and unique wildlife experience, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda is a must-visit destination. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The park is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a prime location for gorilla trekking.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that allows visitors to get up close and personal with these magnificent primates. The trek through the dense, misty forest is challenging but incredibly rewarding as you encounter gorilla families going about their daily lives. Bwindi is also home to other primates, including chimpanzees, as well as over 350 bird species.

The best time to visit is from June to August, and from December to February.
