Details & Specs

With only so much time to explore, don’t get bogged down setting up and packing up the campsite – grab an easy to pitch tent like the Safari 350 from Darche to making touring simple.

This tent is so easy to set up as it features an internal alloy trigger lock pole design. The Safari 350 is also relatively compact, which makes it easy to travel with. Made from Darche’s high quality, proofed, 260gsm polycotton ripstop canvas – you can rely on the Safari to shelter you from the elements. The 2000mm waterhead rating and sealed seams provide protection against rainy weather, and the heavy duty 320gsm PVC bucket floor will shield you from sodden ground.

In warm conditions, open up one of the three water shedding zip up gusset windows. Or if it looks like rain is on the cards, the three gusset vents will allow you to ventilate and prevent condensation build up. If you think you’ll want extra shade and wind protection, you can purchase zip on awnings walls separately. Or if you’d like more room inside the tent, you can get an optional alternative internal trigger lock A-frame.

Great for the small group or family on the go, the Darche Safari 350 Tent is a fast pitching choice to house you on your touring adventures.

  • Compact, easy to pitch and pack up
  • One easy to use internal alloy trigger lock pole
  • Alternative A-Frame available separately

  • Pocketed zippered power cord inlet

Q&a's (24), seasoning/weathering 1 answer.

I've read that because the Safari tents are fully seam sealed, they don't require seasoning/weathering before use. Is that correct?

G'day Seth, Technically yes, but we do recommend seasoning all canvas products as best practice, regardless of previous seam sealing or waterproofing treatments. This just ensures you're getting the absolute best performance out of your canvas gear.

Door Zips 1 answer

Hi, does the door have a standard double zip with fly screen and canvas layers? The photos appear to just have a fly screen door and then just with the external canvas awning/flap that zips down externally.

G'day Andy, The style of doorway you are talking about is most common with synthetic, double skinned tent options. The Safari has an individual mesh door, and an external canvas door that fully overlays the doorway to prevent any possibility for water ingress during a rainstorm.  The external Canvas awning is an entirely different piece of canvas altogether, and whilst it is provided with the tent, it is optional whether or not you choose to use it. So ultimately the canvas door flap & the canvas awning are not the same things - if you take a closer look at the first image, you can see the doorway is rolled up & stowed, and can be closed at anytime separate to the awning. Hope that helps!

Height at rear for a bunk? 1 answer

I understand the walls are angled, but I see they are more vertical at the rear extension, just wandering what the height is back there as I may look at placing the disco or oztrail bunks crossways at the rear (still trying to squeeze my family into a quick pitch heavy duty toting tent!) thank you

G'day Shaun,

I've checked in with Darche on this one and the head height at the rear of the Safari 350, under the supporting pole, is around 135cm. Hope that helps!

Small family 1 answer

I am looking at this tent for our small family of 3, we have an inflatable mattress that is L195x w127 and a travel cot that is 117x 79 are we going to fit

G'day Brandon,

I can't guarantee it without physically trying it out, but based on the measurements and the info provided I don't think you'll have any trouble.  The slope of the walls will obviously cut the space down as you go up, which will effect the porta cot, so I'd recommend grabbing the  A Frame Kit  to ensure you have enough functional space.

Suitability for Family? 1 answer

Hi, my family currently camps in a 2.5x2.5 awning tent and I wondering if we'll actually it in this due to the angularity of the walls. We use 2x 63cm Hiking pads 2x 53cm hiking pads. We have an infant in a small cot too - but since we all fit in a 2.5x2.5 awning tent I was wondering if the 3.5x2.5 Darche here would be suitable. We like the setup simplicity but are concerned about the space. Thanks you

The footprint of this tent is a little larger than your current set-up, however, due to the shape of the tent and slope of the walls you might find you end up with a little less overall space. You should all fit, based on the mat sizes you've indicated, however we'd recommend grabbing the A-frame Kit as well, as this will stop you having to work around the centre pole.

Fly screen 1 answer

Would sand flies and midgies get thru? Is it no-see-um mesh?

G'day Brendan,

Darches doesn't specify that the fly mesh is sand fly / midgeproof, however it is a fairly fine mesh, and we've not had any reports of people having issues with them. We'd recommend taking some extra repellant just in case.

Snow 1 answer

Are these tents good for snow also? Choosing between this or the darche nebula 1550

G'day Koobie,

We generally wouldn't recommend using the Safari 350 tent in snow as you'll end up with snow accumulation on the roof of the tent, especially in the rear extension section. The Nebula 1550 will be a slightly better option as there is less roof space to accumulate snowfall, and the fly will help to reduce condensation.

Pole position 1 answer

Hi, just wondering where abouts the internal pole is on the floor plan? It is obviously not in the middle of the tent and more to the front. Where does it stand from the front door in cm and from the back of the tent? Thanks

G'day Rachel,

The internal pole sits about 125cm inside the front door and approximately 210cm from the rear of the tent.

what season rating does this tent have 1 answer

what is the season rating of the Darche Safari 350 touring tent

G'day Paul,

We'd classify the Safari 350 as a 3 season tent.

Air mattress 1 answer

Will a Coleman double high queen air mattress fit or is the slope of the walls to steep to accommodate the height of the mattress.

G'day Neville,

We don't currently have a display model to try this out, but we think it should be ok, but you would need to use the A-frame kit (which removes the central pole) with the tent so that you have enough space once to fit the mattress.

Central pole? 1 answer

Does the tent have a central internal pole? If so, does that mean you can't use a double mattress?

G'day Phil,

Yes the Safari 350 has a central pole, so if you're wanting to use a double mattress we'd recommend also purchasing the A-frame Kit .

Canvas quality 1 answer

Could you please provide more information about the canvas quality. Is it comparable to the oztent canvas as the specs say it is 260gsm which is quite light for a traditional touring tent, or of a similar weight/cotten content to the rest of the darche line up/swags. Cheers

G'day Emily,

The Darche Safari 350 is made from 260gsm canvas, Oztent use 8Oz canvas, which equates to around 270gsm. Swags tend to use a canvas with greater GSM than touring style tents, as a whole tent made from a 420gsm would be very heavy and bulky!

Supplied bag 1 answer

Could you please tell me if the bag the tent comes in is durable/weather proof enough to withstand being left on the roof racks?

G'day Trent,

The Tent comes in a coated polyester oxford bag which should help to protect it fairly well in transit, but we wouldn't recommend leaving it permanently on the roof.

Close windows from inside? 1 answer

Is there a window flap on the inside so they can be closed without having to go outside to close them? So many brands cheap out and don't offer an internal flap. I mean cmon seriously who wants to get out of the tent to close the windows when you wake up at 2am freezing you're butt off

G'day Batman,

You won't be able to close the external windows from the inside but the Safari 350 has external window gussets, so you can have the windows pegged out with the gusset flap open for airflow, and protection from the rain.

Darkroom? 1 answer

Hi there, dark sleeping areas seem to be becoming very popular now. Just wondering how much light does the canvas block out when the windows and doors are closed?

G'day Adam,

In general, the canvas will block more light than nylon fabrics, however, they will block less light than a nylon tent with a darkroom style coating. If you've got the windows and doors closed it will be fairly dark inside the tent.

Setup and Packaway 1 answer

A good touring tent needs to setup and packaway easily and quickly, even by 1 person. I would like to see this before I consider purchasing.

The Safari 350 is a great option for an easy set up and packaway by 1 person. Unfortunately we don't have a NSW location, however you might be able to see one in person at a local store.

Removable roof poles? 1 answer

Hi, Are the poles in the roof removable like the Oztrail tourer tents? I am afraid it wont fit into the boot of a sedan otherwise.

G'day Rakesh,

I've just double-checked with Darche and you're not able to remove the square pole from the roof as it is stitched into the tent body itself. You might have to consider a different tent if you're needing to fit it in a sedan I think.

Air bed 1 answer

Hi would a double air bed fit between the main pole in the middle ?

G'day Claudio,

You can't fit a double airbed into the Safari 350 without the mattress touching the edges of the tent unless you set up the mattress sideways in the rear section (which will mean someone will always have to climb over the other). We'd recommend the  A-Frame Kit to give you plenty of room with a double mattress.

Packed Size 2 answers

Hi just wondering if the packed size includes the poles or do the poles come in a seperate pole bag. Thanks

G'day Mark,

The packed size of 90 x 90cm is just the tent itself folded into the square bag. The centre and rear poles will need to be packed separately.

Just to clarify this a little further. The pole bag will indeed fit into the 90cm x 90cm tent bag. However as Leece suggests, it's far better to keep them separate as it keeps the weight of both bags far more manageable. Especially if you're considering adding the A-frame kit as well.

Awning and poles 1 answer

Hi, does the awning, and poles come with this tent?

G'day Sally,

The Safari 350 is supplied with tow adjustable trigger lock awning poles and the main awning as pictured in the first image. You can purchase side panels for the front awnings separately.

Size 1 answer

In the description it lists the floor space as 350L x 260W cm. In the photos it shows the dimensions as 350L x 210W cm. Which set of dimensions is correct?

G'day Andrew,

We've just double checked this with Darche and I can confirm that the floor space is 350L x260W cm, we'll amend our floor plan to reflect the correct dimensions.

Fly 1 answer

Does Darche do a separate fly or does Snowys have a suitable fly arrangement?

G'day Simon,

Darche doesn't make a fly for the Safari 350 as the Safari style tents are a single layer canvas tent and don't need a fly. If you'd like to take a separate fly then you could use the Oztrail Camper Fly but you might need some extra poles, pegs and guy ropes.

separate a frame kit 1 answer

cost of separate a frame kit with darche 350 safari touring tent

G'day Kevin,

You can grab an A-Frame Kit for the Darche Safari 350 Touring Tent here .

Poles and beach camping 1 answer

Could you please comment on the suitability of these poles for beach camping? Namely are the hinges exposed and are the poles thick enough? Are the poles as thick as the Oztent poles or are they more like the Coleman instant tent poles?

G'day Steven,

A majority of the poles in the Darche Safari 350 Touring Tent are internal and the outer poles don't have hinges as such. Darche makes these tents with nice thick poles, definitely more like the Oztent and than the instant up tent poles. I reckon you'll have no issues with using this down at the beach!

Best 5 Person Tents in Australia [Honest Opinion]

Getting ready for a camping trip with the family or a couple of mates and need a decent tent? Great, you’re in the right place.

I have spent hours researching the best 5 person tents in Australia, and the ones that have made it to the list below are my top picks.

Before we get into it, don’t forget that most 5 man tents can’t actually sleep 5 adults in comfort, especially if you want to store your gear in the tent too. If you would like a bit of extra room, consider upgrading to a 6 person tent instead.

With that out of the way, let’s get started!

Best 5 Man Tents Australia

Zempire pronto 5 inflatable air tent.

Zempire Pronto 5 Inflatable Air Tent

Best Inflatable 5 Person Tent

  • Sets up in minutes
  • 190cm internal ceiling
  • 5,000mm waterproof rated fly!
  • Awning poles included
  • Lots of ventilation spots
  • Holds up well in heavy rain
  • 2 year warranty
  • As with all air tents, you have to be careful to not over pressurize it when setting it up, otherwise the air poles may burst.

The Zempire Pronto 5 is a very slick looking air tent. A single inflation point for the whole tent makes setup simple and fast.

It is very spacious inside and has included awning poles if you want some extra cover for your gear or a couple of chairs.

A number of people have commented on how well this camping tent holds up in wind and rain, which makes sense given the 5,000mm waterproof rating on the fly.

The 2 year warranty is great and to be expected from a reputable brand like Zempire.

Another excellent family tent, it comes in 4P, 5P and 10P varieties .

Kmart 5 Person Dome Tent with Vestibule

Kmart 5 Person Tent

Best Budget 5 Person Tent

  • Incredibly cheap at just $85
  • Very light - only 5.5kg
  • Very small when packed
  • Front vestibule
  • No warranty (other than Australian statutory warranty)
  • Internal ceiling very low (160cm), no standing up inside
  • Very small sleeping space - better suited to 3 people or less
  • Not waterproof - only water repellent
  • Material very thin - prone to rips and tears

This 5 person dome tent from Kmart is an unbelievably cheap $85. Compared to the others on this list, it is also much, much lighter and packs down to a very small volume.

This probably speaks to the fact that it is made of cheap, thin material, that is likely to wear out quickly and rip or tear easily.

The sleeping area is much smaller and more cramped than the others, and the ceiling is only 160cm high, so you can’t fully stand up inside the tent.

The tent is also not considered waterproof, only water repellent, so I don’t recommend that you take it on trips where you expect there to be anything more than a light drizzle.

It also doesn’t come with a warranty.

The only reason I have included it in this list is that is very, very cheap, so it is a viable option for those who want to go camping on a shoestring budget.

Oztent RV5 Touring Canvas Tent

Oztent RV Touring Canvas Tent

Best Canvas/Touring 5 Person Tent

  • Outstanding build quality - excellent reputation
  • Canvas construction
  • Fast setup, especially for a tent this big
  • Large awning included
  • 1,500mm waterproof rating
  • Very heavy at 25kg
  • Over 2 metres long when packed
  • Sleeping area a bit tight for 5 people

This tent is widely loved by Australians and generally considered to be one of the best, if not the best, touring tents. If you want a high quality 5 man tent and budget isn’t an issue, then look no further.

It is a tough, rugged canvas tent designed for Australian conditions. It will keep you warm and dry no matter the weather you face.

Keep in mind that it is quite heavy, so it is more suited to car camping.

It comes in a variety of sizes, including the RV1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 .

Darche Urban Safari 350

  • Sets up in minutes - instant up technology
  • 260GSM canvas construction
  • Windows on all 4 sides
  • Surprisingly small when packed
  • 1 year warranty
  • Super heavy at almost 30kg

An alternative to the Oztent RV5 is the Darche Urban Safari. Another option in the 5P range, the Darche is considerably cheaper yet still a solid option.

It sets up within minutes, has tons of ventilation and windows yet is still a rugged, tough tent that can handle a variety of weather conditions.

The included awning can be set up with walls to provide extra protection from the elements, if desired.

OZtrail Fast Frame Roamer Cabin 5 Tent

OZtrail Fast Frame Roamer Cabin 5 Tent

  • Near vertical walls and 200cm internal ceiling make it very roomy inside
  • Sets up within minutes
  • Front vestibule can be entirely zipped up, almost doubling the size of the tent
  • Huge front doors for easy access and ventilation
  • Large windows in inner and outer tent
  • Quite heavy at almost 20kg
  • Fairly bulky when packed (almost 118cm long, 27cm diameter)

This is one of my favourites in the 5 man tent category. It is a fast frame tent, which means that it can be set up within just a few minutes, thanks to the poles being pre-attached to the inner tent.

The main room of the tent is very spacious. It has near vertical walls and an internal ceiling of 200cm, which means that you can fully stand up inside. The front vestibule of the tent is huge and can easily fit a table and some chairs, or a whole lot of gear.

The thing I love about the vestibule is that it can be fully enclosed by zipping up the side and front walls. The floor size is also the same as the main room, so it really is an second, separate room for your tent.

If that wasn’t enough, you can also set up a large awning (included) in front of the vestibule for even more shade cover.

This is a fantastic tent that is great for family camping or for a trip away with a group of friends.

5 Man Tent - Buyer's Checklist

Found the tent of your dreams? Use the checklist below to make sure you haven’t overlooked anything important before locking in the purchase!

Camping Style

Within the 5 person tent category, there is huge variety in terms of price, size, weight and much more! Think about the kind of camping that you will be doing and what attributes are most important to you.

Size/Dimensions

As I mentioned earlier, most 5 person tents can’t actually comfortably sleep 5 adults and their gear. The exception to this is the OZtrail Fast Frame Roamer , which can actually sleep 5 adults in relative comfort, with plenty of space for gear too!

If you have a lot of gear or bags that need storing in the tent, either go with this tent or consider upgrading to a 6 person tent instead.

Having a decent ceiling height on your tent is important too. A high ceiling will let you stand up while in your tent (useful for getting changed), and will also make it feel much roomier and spacious. All tents in this article other than the Kmart tent have decent internal ceiling heights.

Larger, more feature-rich tents (such as instant up tents) tend to be heavier. Hiking tents, on the other hand, are much lighter. Consider your needs and think about whether tent weight is important for you.

Season Rating

Some tents are more suitable for certain weather conditions than others. This is typically expressed with the ‘season rating’. 2 and 3 season tents tend to be for mild to moderate weather, whereas 4 season tents are suitable for use even in cold conditions.

Geweare have a good article on tent season ratings if you want to read more.

Waterproofing

Storms are unpredictable in Australia, with sudden, unexpected downpours very common. You don’t want to be woken up at night with water dripping on your face, so make sure that you choose a tent with a decent waterproof rating.

Waterproof ratings range from 1,000mm (the lowest rating that is considered waterproof), all the way up to 10,000mm.

The Zempire Pronto 5 comes with an impressive 5,000mm rating for the fly! On the other end of the spectrum, the Kmart tent is not considered waterproof, only water repellent, so don’t use it if you think that there is a chance of some rain.

Ventilation

We all know how brutal and unforgiving the Australian sun can be. Tents can act as greenhouses, trapping in hot air. Make sure that your tent has some ventilation windows to let the hot air escape, otherwise you’ll be in for a hot and sweaty evening.

Lack of ventilation will also contribute to condensation forming overnight.

The OZtrail Fast Frame Roamer has plenty of ventilation.

Few people enjoy setting up and packing down tents. Trying to fit both ends of the tent poles onto the pins, clipping the outer layer to the poles, banging tent pegs into rocky ground. It’s not a whole lot of fun.

Thankfully, instant up and air tents can make the tent setup process much easier.

Many of the tents in this article are instant up tents, and the Zempire Pronto 5 is an air tent that you can fully inflate in a short space of time, thanks to a single inflation point.

A warranty lets you sleep easy knowing that your tent is covered if it is defective in any way. It is also a good sign that the manufacturer has faith in the quality of their product, and that they stand behind this quality. The Zempire Pronto 5 and the Oztent RV5 both come with 2 year warranties.

Build Quality

Poor build quality means a painful tent setup experience, higher risk of accidental damage to the tent, as well as frustrating and flimsy pegs, poles or zippers. Cheaper tents naturally have poorer build quality, as the manufacturers save on material to keep costs low.

The Kmart tent is an example of a cheaper tent that most likely has a correspondingly lower build quality.

An awning can be a great way to store some extra gear that doesn’t fit inside the tent. With some tents (like the Oztent RV5 ), you can also fit a table and a few chairs underneath the awning, which is a nice way to keep cool while enjoying some food or a few drinks.

Group of people at campfire near 5 man tents

There are a wide variety of 5 person tents on the market, and the right one for you will largely depend on the kind of camping that you will be doing.

The Zempire Pronto 5 is the best 5 man tent Australia. It is a high quality, waterproof air tent. The set up is fast and there is plenty of ventilation.

If you are more of a canvas kind of person, then the Oztent RV5 or the Darche Urban Safari are great options.

Product Info

The Safari 350 is perfect for sleeping 4 – 6 people, room for the whole family! It features a zippered front entry and 2 large windows on either side that can be gusseted in wet weather. With gusseted air vents low to the ground on 3 sides there is plenty of ventilation to help keep you cool on those hot summer nights out camping.

It also includes a large zip on awning and awning poles for added shade and protection from the weather. The large rear window storm flap also includes eyelets giving it the ability to be used as an awning also. Super fine mesh on all the windows and doors will keep the bugs away while still allowing a nice cool breeze through the tent. So if you are looking for a classic old school canvas tent that ticks all the boxes, the Darche Safari 350 is perfect for your next outdoor adventure.

Safari

Exotic Africa is the scene for the Safari Party.  Enter the village through a large communal hut and be entertained by African drummers and dancers while you sample foods from Morocco, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. We set up an exhibit of exotic animals where your guests can get an up-close experience with a monkey, lemur, African porcupine, alligator and an assortment of other gently raised and respected creatures.
