Scott leads at BMW Championship, opens up on overcoming ‘atrocious’ flaw as frustration builds for McIlroy, Scheffler

Australian Adam Scott rolled back the years as he fired a superb 9-under 63 to grab a three shot lead at the BMW Championship, the second event in the FedEx Cup playoffs, on Saturday.

The 44-year-old made his PGA Tour debut at Castle Pines Golf Club 24 years ago, the start of a career which has brought him 14 wins on the tour, but none in the past four years.

But the 2013 Masters winner equalled the course record with his bogey free round, catapulting himself into the lead.

“It’s been a long time. I can’t remember the last time I shot a 63 out here,” said Scott, who sits at 13-under for the tournament.

“But it feels good to go low, that I’ve still got that in me. Hopefully, there’s one more this week,” he added.

Getting into the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings, not only made sure that Scott would compete this week but secured him spots in the tour’s elite Signature Events next season.

The Australian only made it into the top 50 thanks to a final round 67 at the St Jude Championship on Sunday, but with that pressure off he says is playing with freedom.

“Your mindset changes so much. Leaving the range, I just wanted to keep moving in the right direction, grind out and shoot under par and keep going that way. Then by the middle of the round I was thinking of how many birdies can I make. It’s funny how that happens,” he said.

“I feel like I really don’t have anything to lose this week. I can’t go out of the top 50. I’m going to have a good schedule in the Signature Events next year. Of course I’d love to make it to East Lake, but now I’d love to win this event,” he said.

The final event of the FedEx Cup is the Tour Championship at East Lake, near Atlanta, next week.

Scott has three strokes over Keegan Bradley, the overnight leader, who made a 4-under 68, with his first bogey of the tournament coming on the 18th.

Bradley, the USA’s Ryder Cup captain for 2025, held a one shot lead over Hideki Matsuyama after the first round but by the time he teed off it was a very different situation.

Matsuyama had withdrawn with a back injury and Scott had moved well ahead of him.

“Adam is a world-class Hall-of-Fame type player. He went out and did what he does, and I’ll have to play really well to hang with him this weekend,” said Bradley.

Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg also moved into contention for the weekend, matching Scott’s 63 with a round which saw a bogey on the par-4 third and an eagle on the par-5 14th.

Aberg said that the rain at the end of Thursday’s play had allowed for more attacking approaches to the greens.

Sweden’s Alex Noren was in fourth place on 8-under after shooting a second straight round of 68.

Elsewhere, Scott also opened up on how equipment changes had helped spark his turnaround in recent weeks, specifically pointing to his iron play as a weakness that prevented him from having more success.

“It’s really my iron play has been atrocious for two years, and that’s why I’ve been moving stuff around, because I figured if I leave it the same, I’ll keep getting atrocious,’’ Scott added.

“But before the Scottish, we managed to really, like, sort my irons out, in what I’m using to shaft to grip to lofts to lie angles and club, the whole thing, complete working over, and as soon as we did that, it started feeling better.’’

Keegan Bradley is Scott’s closest competitor at this point, sitting just two shots behind the Australian with a few holes still left to play.

Meanwhile, FedEx Cup leader, world number one and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler had a tough day - making even par despite three bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4 10th.

Scheffler is one-under for the tournament and 12 strokes off the lead. Xander Schauffele, the winner in this year’s PGA Championship and British Open, also had a testing round making five bogeys in his one-over 73.

Scheffler, playing the par-4 10th, sent his second shot into the water and then on his fourth from the drop zone, the ball one-hopped over the green.

Scheffler then turned to his caddie, Ted Scott, and said, “Is that not enough club? Seriously?

“How is that possible? I thought we were pin high. How? How? How is that possible?” he added, going on to record a double bogey.

Scheffler was not the only one to be overcome by frustration, with Rory McIlroy throwing his club into the water after sending his tee shot on the par-5 17th into the right rough.

Adam Scott makes BMW Championship history, puts FedEx Cup within reach

Adam Scott went low Friday at the BMW Championship

Kendall Capps

Adam Scott with eyes on fire

Longtime PGA Tour veteran Adam Scott played the back nine last Sunday under incredible stress. He needed to perform down the stretch to ensure he would even make it to Colorado for this week's BMW Championship . He did just that and now Scott suddenly finds himself with a shot at the FedEx Cup after Friday's second round.

Scott posted a course record 9-under 63 at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado, per the PGA Tour. That performance vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard at 13-under. He currently holds a five shot lead over Alex Noren, who is also in the clubhouse. First round leader Keegan Bradley is six back, but still has much of his round remaining.

Nevertheless, Scott was thrilled with his play and is in great shape heading into the weekend.

“…It's a great round. I think I took advantage of good conditions this morning and hopefully set myself up to have a real run at this thing on Sunday now,” Scott said following his round.

“I played within myself. I picked fairly conservative targets. But it was a good day to be aggressive when you had the right number, like on 16… I didn't play overly aggressive, but I think I executed well, and I putted very well today.”

Scott nearly hit a hole in one on the par-3 16th, coming up just short. He followed that up with another birdie on 17 to post a clean card.

Adam Scott goes from stressful to stress free at BMW Championship

Aug 23, 2024; Castle Rock, Colorado, USA; Adam Scott after putting for birdie on the sixth hole during the second round of the BMW Championship golf tournament at Castle Pines Golf Club

Adam Scott has not won a tournament since 2020. He has had a very tumultuous few years since that win, with inconsistent play.

As he played his final round at last week's FedEx St. Jude Championship , Scott did not even know if he would even make it to this week. A strong finish allowed him to climb to 41st on the FedEx Cup standings, earning exemption into this event as well as key Signature Events in 2025.

That apparently took a lot of pressure off.

“It's a big deal for anybody to make it through to the top 50 on TOUR, and I think that was a relief last week. I have to say playing the last — the back nine last week was quite stressful. I knew I was a shot here or there from being in or out, and getting through that was good.”

With that out of his way, he was able to bring that momentum to the BMW Championship. He entered the week 41st and needing to reach the top 30 to earn his way into the Tour Championship next week in Atlanta. Now, Scott is projected fourth in the standings. That would put him squarely in the mix for the 2024 FedEx Cup title.

“Of course I would love to make it to East Lake, but now I would love to win this event.”

He will certainly have his chance.

A Wild Day at the BMW Championship Changes Little for Cal Golfers

Jeff faraudo | 1 hour ago.

Collin Morikawa

  • California Golden Bears

Collin Morikawa took the long way to finishing where he started the day at the BMW Championship on Friday. Fellow Cal golfing alum Byeong Hun An stayed the course as both moved through the FedEx Cup playoffs toward next week’s season-ending Tour Championship.

For Max Homa, the second round at Castle Pines Golf Club outside Denver was a strange trip that only confirmed the reality he won’t make the cut among the top 30 golfers who will play next week in Atlanta, chasing a first-prize of $25 million.

The 33-year-old began the day in 38th place and sunk to 47th in a field of 49 golfers after shooting a 3-over 75. How he got there we’ll explain later, but the bottom line are the FedEx Cup standings, and Homa is now 47th — 17 spots away from advancing to next week.

Morikawa, 27, began the day in 10th place in the second leg of the playoffs and at No. 5 in the FedEx Cup points standings. The 27-year-old included two bogeys and a double-bogey on the front nine, then got hot.

He ran off four straight birdies from No. 12 through 15, then made a fifth birdie in a span of six holes on No. 17. With a par on 18, Morikawa finished with a 2-under 70 for the second straight day, leaving him a minus-4 and tied for 10th. He now resides comfortably at No. 6 in the points standings.

An included an eagle on the 17th hole on his way to a 3-under 72 and now is tied for 15th, along with Rory McIlroy, at minus-3. The 32-year-old South Korean also is 15th in the points standings, just where he was after Thursday’s first round.

Meanwhile, Homa’s challenging season reached perhaps a new height for up-and-down performance. He shot 75 despite making seven birdies — six of them on the front nine.

But he also carded three bogeys, a triple-bogey and, yes, a quadruple bogey. All of that more than neutralized the spate of birdies and left him, somehow, three strokes over par for the day.

Adam Scott, the 44-year-old Australian, leads the field at minus-13 after shooting a bogey-free 9-under 63 in the second round.

The one-time UNLV golfer, who has to add this season to his career total of 14 PGA wins, began the day in the precarious position of No. 41 in the points standings. Now, after rapidly soaring 37 slots, he heads into the weekend at No. 4.

First-round leader Keegan Bradley is second at 11 under after posting a ??.  Bradley is now No. 11 in the points standings. Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg is in third at minus-9 after a stacking eight birdies and an eagle to score 63.

Hideki Matsuyama withdrew Friday morning with a lower back injury the day after he shot a 67 to sit one stroke off the lead. Masuyama won the first leg of playoffs last week, capturing FedEx St. Jude tournament to climb to No. 3 in the points standings. He will retain that position and qualify for the Tour Championship.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who also enjoys a huge lead in the FedEx points standings, is unaffected by the fact that he is tied for 29th place at Castle Pines after an even-par 72 on Friday.

2023 Tour Championship leaderboard: Collin Morikawa tied on top breaking Tigers Woods' record at East Lake

Moriakwa's 125 through 36 holes is two strokes better than woods' previous record mark in atlanta.

Collin Morikawa is off to a record start at East Lake Golf Club, following his Thursday 61 with a Friday 64 to shoot 125 through the first two rounds of the 2023 Tour Championship. That mark bests the prior best set by Tiger Woods, who shot 127 through 36 holes in 2007.

Morikawa remains tied atop the Tour Championship leaderboard with Viktor Hovland, who was similarly on fire in Atlanta on Friday. Hovland, last week's BMW Championship winner, once again utilized a back-nine sizzler to pull ahead of the competition and into pole position alongside Morikawa at 16 under as the weekend begins at East Lake.

Rattling off four straight back-nine birdies and needing only 30 strokes across his final holes, Hovland remained on top with Morikawa with the duo now sitting two strokes ahead of Scottie Scheffler, who entered the Tour Championship two shots in front of Hovland in an advantage provided by the FedEx Cup standings.

With $18 million awaiting the eventual winner, there is still plenty of golf left to play entering Moving Day. Keegan Bradley (-13), Xander Schauffele (-12), Jon Rahm (-12) and Rory McIlroy (-10) all sit within six shots of the lead with 36 holes left to play.

If Hovland is to become the first player since Patrick Cantlay in 2021 -- fourth overall -- to pull off the BMW Championship-Tour Championship double, he will need to putt like he did Friday. Ranking 29th in strokes gained putting in Round 1 -- besting only Scheffler -- Hovland found his groove in Round 2 gaining nearly three strokes on the green and ranking first in the field. He has proven to have the complete game and a champion's mettle, but so have his American counterparts as the list of potential FedEx Cup winners has shortened.

Morikawa made his move Thursday, and while he matched Hovland with a 64 on Friday, Hovland finished hotter on the day with a back-nine 30. Carding a bogey-free 6-under 64 to sit at 16 under, Morikawa finds himself needing to match the hottest player in the world stroke for stroke if he is to make history and become the first FedEx Cup champion to start the week nine off the pace.

Meanwhile, Scheffler has been flawless since his triple bogey on the 15th hole in Round 1, playing his next 21 holes in bogey free fashion at 6 under. The FedEx Cup leader (at the tournament's start) and No. 1 golfer in the world is within striking distance of retaking the lead entering Saturday's third round.

The leaders

T1. Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa (-16): If it felt like déjà vu, that's because it was déjà vu. Hovland's back-nine 30 looked awfully similar to his back-nine 28 at Olympia Fields from last Sunday. He began the homeward half with a par before carding scores of 3-3-3-2-3 to speed past his counterparts. Not only did Hovland claim the lead at the halfway point, he effectively trimmed the potential names engraved on the FedEx Cup trophy. For much of the afternoon, the leaderboard was packed like sardines. Hovland has since cracked open the tin and made it so those at the top have plenty of room to swim.

The contenders

3. Scottie Scheffler (-14) 4. Keegan Bradley (-13) T5. Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm (-12) 7. Rory McIlroy (-10)

Outside the mess on the par-5 finisher, Scheffler's second round was what we expected from the world No. 1 this week. Getting around the par 70 without a blemish and adding five birdies along the way, Scheffler remains in the thick of it at the halfway point. Like Hovland, Scheffler was much better on the greens Friday gaining nearly two strokes with his gamer. If he putts like that, he should win the FedEx Cup and make up for last year's blunder. However, it's a big if.

Xander's love affair with East Lake

Stop, if you have heard this before: Schauffele is in contention at East Lake. The winner of the Tour Championship in 2017 -- the final year of the shadow leaderboard -- Schauffele now eyes his first FedEx Cup crown. In his 26 rounds at East Lake, Schauffele has shot under par 23 times (including a 64 Friday) and not once has carded an over-par round.

"It's just you got to sort of plot around the property well and if you can get your putter going, the greens are so pure you feel like you can start rolling anything in," said Schauffele. "So, it must just fit my eye. I'm not really sure. But, yeah, I mean, I played pretty well around the property and I'm going to need some more of that magic here on the weekend."

Rory's back still an issue

The three-time FedEx Cup champion looked somewhat looser Friday compared to Thursday, but McIlroy continues to struggle with his back. A 3-under 67 has him on the periphery of contention at 10 under, six adrift of the leaders. However, his eyes may already be on the Ryder Cup despite confirming he will be playing in the Irish Open and the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour before the action in Rome.

"I would rather it pop up now than in three or four weeks' time," said McIlroy. "Yeah, again, I've managed it well and I think I did well to get through yesterday. I've got through another day. Hopefully it feels a bit better over the weekend"

2023 Tour Championship updated odds and picks

  • Viktor Hovland: 17/10
  • Collin Morikawa: 23/10
  • Scottie Scheffler: 33/10
  • Jon Rahm: 10-1
  • Xander Schauffele: 14-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 22-1
  • Keegan Bradley: 25-1

These are the only seven players listed below 150-1. The top three on the board command the most respect, and rightfully so. I think you can cross off Bradley and McIlroy, due to his health, making this a five-man race for the crown. Let's take a shot on Schauffele at 14-1 to track down the three-headed monster.

Rory wraps up

It is a round of 3-under 67 for the three-time champ, and he will head into the weekend at 10 under. It is likely he finds himself a touchdown behind Hovland or whoever claims the 36-hole lead, but the main concern has to be his back and if he can stretch it even further.

Hovland makes his move

The Norwegian remains en fuego and now holds the lead at 15 under. The Americans trail by one and separation has officially been made as the next closest player is four strokes behind Hovland. It is likely Hovland, Scottie or Collin will be your FedEx Cup champ.

Leaderboard beginning to separate

Three young guns now have a two-stroke lead over the rest of the field with Collin Morikawa leading the way at 14 under. Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler find themselves at 13 under before Jon Rahm and co. at 11 under. If the three at the top can finish strong, they could conceivably trim the number of potential winners to 5-6.

POY conversation heating up

They are running 2-3 behind Collin Morikawa, and they have been the best players all year. Scottie Scheffler stands at 12 under and one behind is Jon Rahm at 11 under after starting his back nine in style. The Spaniard missed a 5-foot chance to get to 12, but he now heads to the difficult 14th looking to hold serve before a potential fast finish.

Morikawa marches ahead

A birdie on the difficult par-4 8th has Collin Morikawa at 3 under for the day and 13 under for the tournament. He leads by one over Scottie Scheffler and could be on the move as he heads to the difficult ninth. This is the most separation we have seen today as congestion is the name of the game at East Lake.

Hovland cards first bogey of the week

It took him more than 20 holes, but Viktor Hovland has finally dropped a shot and returns to -11. He sits one behind Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler and is joined by Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley. If either of the latter two win, would they garner a U.S. pick for the Ryder Cup? I lean no despite what would be a great season.

Ludvig Åberg, PGA Tour, BMW Championship

Adam Scott set the course record earlier in the day at the BMW Championship , and young Swedish phenom Ludvig Åberg matched it in the afternoon.

The Ryder Cup star shot a 9-under 63 during the afternoon wave to soar up the leaderboard by more than 20 places. Having carded an even-par 72 on Thursday, Åberg now sits at 9-under at the midway point.

“The course is gettable. Felt like I was hitting it well,” Åberg said.

“I was hitting a lot of fairways, and then you can be quite aggressive into the greens.”

A nearly three-hour rain delay halted play towards the end of Thursday’s opening round, thus setting up a softer golf course on Friday. Åberg, like Scott, took advantage of the benign conditions, making eight birdies and an eagle to vault into contention. But unlike Scott, Åberg made a lone bogey at the par-3 4th.

Still, Åberg had a feeling a low score was out there.

“It was funny, me and [my caddie] Joe [Skovron], walking down one of the first couple of holes. We talked about it yesterday, too, that we could see a low one, and we were just fortunate that it was us today,” Åberg said.

“It’s fun to play good golf. I will keep being aggressive even though I shot even par yesterday. I was still very aggressive, which I like. But I will keep doing that and try to keep up and make a few birdies to catch Adam.”

Åberg sits four shots behind Scott with 36 holes remaining.

“Adam, for me, is an inspiration,” Åberg added.

“He’s been out here for a long time, and what he’s doing with that longevity is amazing. I look up to him a lot. It’ll be fun to try to catch him this weekend.”

Even though Scott leads by four strokes, Åberg has made 15 birdies this week, leading the field. But two double bogies during his opening round on Thursday set him back a bit. Still, the young Swede has a chance. If he keeps the pedal to the metal, he will have as good a chance of catching the Aussie as any.

Scottie scheffler shrugs off tweaked back in round 1 of 2024 bmw championship: 'it's fine', share this article.

champions tour scoreboard

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. – It’s never good to see a professional golfer reaching for their lower back after hitting a shot. It’s even worse when that golfer is World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is trying to win the FedEx Cup for the first time to cap off a spectacular season.

But on the 17 th hole, Scheffler hit his second shot and touched his lower back with his left hand. PGA Tour XM Radio’s Mark McCumber described it as if “it took his breath away” and Scheffler leaned on his club for an extra second.

Scheffler finished with a couple of pars and posted three birdies and two bogeys for an opening-round, 1-under 71. After the round, Scheffler downplayed any potential injury, saying, “It’s fine.”

Scheffler did concede that he woke up with a sore back and had trouble loosening it up.

“It was hard for me to get through it, and I was laboring most of the day to get through the ball,” he explained. “On 17 I was trying to hit a high draw, and that’s a shot where I’ve really got to use a big turn, big motion.”

Asked to elaborate on what happened, he said, “Maybe I hit a few too many balls yesterday or something. It was just a little sore. I’m sure I’ll get some ice on it and stuff, and I’ll be totally fine tomorrow.”

Would he do any special treatment? “Just normal routine. Just like always,” he said.

Scheffler was paired Thursday with Xander Schauffele, who is second in the FedEx Cup and shot 69 to best Scheffler, the FedEx Cup leader, by two strokes.

Schauffele said he noticed that Scheffler’s back was stiff when he tried to turn his head but joked that it may be a bigger problem for the field than for Scheffler, noting that Scheffler needed treatment on his neck at the Players Championship and elsewhere when he won. “I guess it’s a bad sign for everyone else,” he said.
