Asian Tour’s best go in hunt of Open Championship spots in Korea

asian tour golf korea

Scott Vincent. Asian Tour

The 65th Korea Open begins this week, will plenty on intriguing storylines to keep track of at Woo Jeung Hills Country Club — south of Seoul.

With two spots in the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool up for grabs, the event has attracted a strong field, with Scott Vincent making a return from his LIV Golf schedule for the 10th event of the season on the Asian Tour. The Zimbabwean has impressed once again on LIV, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in Singapore.

He is joined by brother Kieran, who claimed the International Series Vietnam in April and is one of five winners from the Asian Tour this year competing here, along with Hong Kong’s Taichi Kho (World City Championship), Miguel Tabuena (The DGC Open) from the Philippines and Australian Brendan Jones (New Zealand Open).

Tabuena, who has not finished worse than 22nd in six starts in 2023, is the leading player competing from the Asian Tour Order of Merit (OOM), sitting in second place. Kieran is the top golfer from the International Series OOM. He is in third place on that Merit list, which sees the winner at the end of the season earn passage onto the 2024 LIV Golf League — a feat achieved by his brother Scott last year.

The other Asian Tour winner from this season is Korea’s rising star Chanmin Jung, who recorded a surprise victory in the GS Caltex Maekyung Open in May.

The strapping 23 year old, nicknamed ‘Hulk’, is bidding to become only the second player to win the Maekyung event and Korea Open in the same season. His compatriot Sangmoon Bae, did the double in 2009.

Defending champion Minkyu Kim, who beat fellow Korean Mingyu Cho in a play-off last season, is back this year along with five other former winners: Junseok Lee (2021), Seunghyuk Kim (2014), Yikeun Chang (2017), Minchel Choi (2018), and veteran Jong-duck Kim (1997).

SCHEDULE FOR ASIAN TOUR 2024 REVEALED

Asian Tour’s thriving 2024 tournament schedule points to good times ahead.

The Asian Tour’s remarkable period of accelerated growth will continue unabated in 2024 after it recently released another impressive and substantial schedule for the new season.

Hot on the heels of the completion of its 2023 season, the Tour has unveiled an initial schedule of 20 strong events across 12 countries – with a significant number of important tournaments to be added.

Once finalised it is expected that the schedule will surpass last year– which saw 23 events staged with total prize money of US$35 million.

The IRS Prima Malaysian Open returns to the 2024 schedule of the Asian Tour

The IRS Prima Malaysian Open will celebrate its return to the schedule after a four-year hiatus by becoming the season-opening event and will be played at The Mines Resort and Golf Club, from 15-18 February. The event was last played in 2020, when American Trevor Simsby triumphed.

It will be followed the week after by the International Series Oman – the first of 10 International Series events in 2024, which provide a pathway to the multi-million-dollar LIV Golf League.

International Series events will be played in Macau (International Series Macau presented by Wynn, 14-17 March), Morocco (4-7 July), Indonesia (31 October – 3 November), and Qatar (28 November 28 – 1 December).

New Zealand’s Ben Campbell’s birdie on the final hole won him the 2023 Hong Kong Open

The Hong Kong Open will once again be part of The International Series, and making its debut on the series will be the PIF Saudi International powered by Softbank Investment Advisers, which was the Tour’s opening event in 2022 and 2023. Both events will be in Q4. The dates will be announced later along with the details of three more International Series tournaments.

The Tour will also once again return to two of its traditional tournament strongholds, Korea and Chinese-Taipei.

Three events will be played in each market, with the GS Caltex Maekyung Open (2-5 May), Kolon Korea Open (20-23 June) and Shinhan Donghae Open (5-8 September) staged in Korea; while the Yeangder TPC (26-29 September), Mercuries Taiwan Masters (3-6 October) and Taiwan Glass Taifong Open (14-17 November) will be hosted in Chinese-Taipei.

The New Zealand Open presented by Sky Sport (29 February – 31 March), the Saudi Open presented by Public Investment Fund (17-20 April) and the SJM Macao Open (10-13 October) are also back on the schedule.

Abraham Ancer went wire-to-wire to win the Saudi International last year

“The strength and depth of the Asian Tour’s 2024 schedule is reflective of the phenomenal growth we have been enjoying and we are already excited about what the new year will bring,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO, Asian Tour.

“Importantly, we are delighted to confirm the schedule so soon after the completion of our 2023 season, which will allow our members to plan accordingly and act as an enormous incentive to those heading to Qualifying School.

“The International Series events combined with our central column of established tournaments form the backbone of the Tour while we look forward to being able to announce other premier events in due course.”

The Asian Development Tour schedule will be released later in 2024 and will feature an expanded line-up of tournaments, for what is the Asian Tour’s constantly evolving feeder circuit.

asian tour golf korea

The tournament was officially announced at Lotte Hotel, Seoul and will be staged at the Rainbows Country Club from June 17-20, 2021. As Korea’s national title tournament, DB Group Korea Women’s Open marks the start of an exciting journey for the region’s best women golfers as they embark on their journey to be crowned the AGLF (Asia Golf Leaders Forum) Asian Player of the Year at the end of the season.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, only a small group of key personnel were present at the signing ceremony between the AGLF and the Korea Golf Association ( KGA ). They consist of Mr. Jung-tai Kim, chairman of the AGLF & KLPGA, Mr. Jong-myung Lee, chairman of the Korea Golf Association, Mr. Hyung-mo Kang, vice chairman of the Korea Golf Association and Mr. Paul Park, secretary-general of the AGLF.

“The DB Group Korea Women’s Open is the first tournament of the LAT series and is indeed a significant milestone for Asian Women’s golf. These tournaments will give us the opportunity to enhance international sporting relations and promote friendship between  Asian countries through golf,” said Kim.

Backed by the R&A, the LAT Series aims to boost Asian women’s golf starting with the DB  Group Korea Women’s Open followed by the Hana Financial Group Championship in late September and the Hana Financial Group Singapore Women’s Open in early December.  In addition to the existing KLPGA tournaments, other tournaments across the Asia region such as the Taiwan Women’s Open with SBS in November and the Hyosung Championship with SBS  in Vietnam during the first week of December will also form part of the series in 2021.

The LAT Series committee is already in discussion with several key stakeholders including the Indonesia Golf Association and Thailand Golf Association on the hosting of their national women’s open in their respective countries. There are at least six tournaments planned for  2021, expanding to 10 by 2023. Plans are also in the works for LAT Series’ own ranking system and establishing the AGLF Asian  Player of the Year Award. The AGLF Asian Player of the Year will be awarded to the player who earns the most points from each LAT Series tournament played this year.

What is the International Series on the Asian Tour? Is it linked to LIV Golf?

The International Series marks a ground-breaking and unprecedented investment into the Asian Tour by LIV Golf Investments.

asian tour golf korea

The International Series was unveiled by the Asian Tour and LIV Golf back in February, marking a huge investment and development for the circuit.

The International Series is integrated into the Asian Tour schedule and it began with its Thailand event at Black Mountain Golf Club in March.

Related: Patrick Reed actually just said THIS ahead of competing on the Asian Tour

LIV Golf, commissioned by Greg Norman, increased their investment of $200 million to $300 million into the Asian Tour, supposedly showing LIV's commitment to improving golf on a global scale.

10 events are set to be played on the International Series each season for the next 10 years. Some of the key aims of the series include driving fan engagement, attracting commercial interest and stabilising professional golf.

The series will visit countries such as England, Korea, Vietnam, China, Singapore and Hong Kong while prize purses will range from $1.5 million to $2 million.

What is the International Series on the Asian Tour? Is it linked to LIV Golf?

The first event of The International Series in Thailand was won by Sihwan Kim. Scott Vincent won the second event at Slaley Hall Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort at the start of June.

There are two more events on the series scheduled for 2022. International Series Singapore is taking place this week at Tanah Merah Country Club where Patrick Reed will be teeing it up having most recently played in the Bedminster Invitational on the LIV Golf Tour .

"I have heard a lot of amazing things about the area and the golf course. To be able to come and experience it myself is amazing and watching the (National Day) fireworks last night was great," Reed said.

"There is a lot of things that go into it, and when the people treat you like family as they have here, it makes the experience that much better."

International Series South Korea is up next from August 18 to 21 at Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club. This will be the fourth event of the series to be held in 2022.

Currently, Vincent leads the International Series Order of Merit from Kim in second place. Travis Smyth, Phachara Khongwatmai and Sadom Kaewkanjana make up the top five and all of these players have competed on the LIV Golf Tour this year.

The Asian Tour kicked off its season with the Saudi International in February which was sponsored by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia . The PIF is the majority shareholder of LIV Golf Investments.
