Cypriots are generally known for their warmly, hospitable quality, and the high value they place on family. There are really two kinds of Cypriots though: Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, since Cyprus is divided in two. Greek Cypriots are the Greek-speaking Greek Orthodox community; they occupy the south. Turkish Cypriots are the Turkish-speaking Muslim community, who occupy the northern part of the country (roughly a third of it).

Before the 1974 military coup and the subsequent split of the island, the two groups were largely mixed. Their cultures were more intertwined. Nowadays, however, with the island formally divided, there is more of a cultural divide. There are still many signs of cultural harmony, though. One need only look at the Home for Cooperation, a community centre and NGO hub located in the Green Line (the UN Buffer Zone between north and south) to see signs of hope for unification. Indeed the reopening of border points in 2003, allowing domestic travel between north and south, was a step forward.

While southern Cyprus has seen rapid tourism growth and environmental degradation, tourism in the north is growing at a much slower rate. The Republic of Northern Cyprus (formally recognized only by Turkey) is characterized by a Turkish–Cypriot dialect, warm hospitality and friendliness, and Islam (though its practice is not as overt as in many other Muslim countries). The culture of northern Cyprus is strongly influenced by Turkey, but Turkish Cypriots consider themselves Cypriot first and foremost.

Geography & environment

Located in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus is an island that lies west off the coast of Lebanon and Syria, north of Israel and Egypt, and south of Turkey. At 9,250 square kilometres in size, it’s relatively small. Cyprus is essentially split in two: the northern part of the country (roughly one-third of the land mass) is controlled by Turkey, and has been ever since the coup of 1974. The lower two-thirds of the country is occupied by Greek Cypriots.

Northern Cyprus boasts a diverse and scenic land mass of beaches, mountains and sweeping plains. The Kyrenia Range is a major geographic feature of the north, and its highest peak is Mt Selvili (1,023 m). East of this mountain range, there is a peninsula called Karpas, where the quiet town of Rizokarpaso and various beaches are found. The holiday towns of Kyrenia and Famagusta lie in the north and east of the main land mass, respectively.

Shopping guide to Cyprus

Cyprus is a fantastic place to shop for locally produced items, from handcrafted textiles to fresh fruit and vegetables. Perhaps the most tempting souvenir in Cyprus is a kilim – an Ottoman style rug woven by hand. There’s also some wonderful Turkish pottery, silk, scarves and tiles to be found.

Lefkara embroidery is a uniquely Cypriot item, originating in the village of the same name in the south; northern versions of Lefkara embroidery have a slightly different aesthetic. North Nicosia is a great place to shop for handmade lace like this, as well as baskets which are handmade in island’s more remote villages. Often rugs and baskets are not cheap, and it pays to shop around a little before you buy.

Thanks to the strength of Cypriot farming communities, market-fresh local produce is never too far away in Cyprus. Start with Nicosia’s markets – both the ‘open’ and ‘closed’ markets are worth a good stroll around, and great for local interaction.

Festivals and events

The Cypriots are a festive bunch, which shows in their jam-packed calendar. The Limassol Carnival is a major event in the south – it’s one of the best-known carnivals in Europe. In the north of Cyprus, food is a major theme of the festival calendar, with an event to celebrate just about any Cypriot food imaginable: the orange, grape, lemon, date, tulip and walnut, just to name a few. Famagusta, meanwhile, has a reputation for regular music festivals.

North Cyprus Olive Festival, Kyrenia

It started in 2001 and, before too long, grew to attract visiting artists from many neighboring countries. Olives are certainly not the only focus; dance performances, market stalls and seminars have all been known to feature in this multi-day affair.

International Famagusta Art & Culture Festival

Spanning hip hop, reggae, pop and classical, this 20+ year-old event has steadily grown into one of the most significant music festivals of the Mediterranean. With a strong world music bent, it’s a great place to experience just how much more there is to the region than sun, surf and sand.

Eco Festival, Buyyokonuk

For many years, the village of Buyokkonuk has been a bastion of sustainable tourism and all things local. This late-summer festival is a place to taste Cypriot food done in a slow, proper way. While the cuisine is the main focus, music and market stalls feature among the festivities.

Food and drink in Cyprus

The cuisine of Turkish Cypriots comes from Mediterranean, Southern European and Middle Eastern influences. The beauty of eating in Northern Cyprus is that ingredients tend to be local, as food production is more agrarian in the north than in the south.

Must-try food and drink in Cyprus

Meze is a major pillar of Cypriot food culture, in the same way tapas is to the Spaniards. It’s the share-plate style of eating, the perfect accompaniment to a few drinks with friends. Meze dishes might include hummus, beetroot, yoghurt, grilled halloumi, spicy pastourma (cured sausage), koupepia or dolma (stuffed vine leaves) … the list goes on.

2. Halloumi

Is it Greek, or is it Turkish? No matter where you stand on the debate on its origins, this rich brined cheese is one of the must-eat foods in Cyprus. If it’s grilled (it usually is) it’s best consumed within minutes of it being served, preferably with copious lemon juice.

3. Molihiya

A spinach-like dish often seen in Northern Cyprus, Molihiya is perhaps of Arabic origin. It uses sun-dried Molihiya leaves which have a distinct and potent flavor. Garlic, lemon, tomato and chilli are incorporated, and often chicken is too.

4. Cicek dolmasi

Another beloved Turkish-Cypriot dish, these zesty and spicy parcels are squash blossoms (or zucchini flowers) stuffed with a mixture of rice, onions, tomatoes and herbs.

To call it the local ‘firewater’ may be a little harsh – the Cypriot drink of choice certainly has a character of its own, though colourless and sugarless. It’s distilled from grapes but has a subtle raisin aroma, and is as refreshing in the summer (served cold) as it is heart-warming in the winter.

Ayran is a savory yogurt-based beverage that is mixed with salt and served cold. Though filling, it’s quite refreshing and a great option for those who don’t drink alcohol. To get the full authentic dose, go for one with some dried mint in it.

7. şeftali kebabı

Pronounced Sheftalia Kebab is a traditional Cypriot food. It is a type of sausage without skin, that uses caul fat, or omentum, the membrane that surrounds the stomach of lamb, to wrap the ingredients rather than sausage casing, thus ensuring a very juicy kebab

Reliable internet access is increasingly common in Cyprus, especially in the major towns. Internet cafes tend to be more prevalent in the north. Wi-Fi is free in many hotels and cafes in both the north and south. Internet access will be more scarce in remote and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Cyprus?

International roaming is possible in Cyprus in the South.  For European travelers, as of 2017 this will no longer incur a fee. Traveling in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus roaming may not be available and if so it may be expensive, better to check with your provider before traveling. If you’re staying for longer than a few days, inexpensive SIM cards with data are easy to purchase.

What are the toilets like in Cyprus?

Toilets in Cyprus block easily when paper goes into them, hence the separate wastebaskets you’ll see for paper disposal. This is the norm throughout Cyprus.

Can I drink the water in Cyprus?

The tap water in the south of Cyprus is fine to drink, but in the north it’s best to stick to filtered (or, when it’s the only option, bottled) water. The high mineral content can upset your stomach if you’re not used to it.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Cyprus?

Most major credit cards are widely accepted in Cyprus. Dinners and Amex may not be accepted.

What is ATM access like in Cyprus?

ATMs are widely available in Cyprus. However, it’s best to carry ample cash with you if you’re travelling to more remote areas in the north.

Is Cyprus a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Homosexuality is legal in Cyprus, and the country is quite a popular destination among gay travelers. In the north, however, homosexuality was only decriminalized as recently as 2010. LGBTQIA+ travelers should exercise caution when traveling, and be aware that conservative attitudes may still prevail in many areas.

The main clubbing spot in Cyprus is Ayia Napa which is one of the most popular Mediterranean party destinations, competing with the likes of Ibiza, Magluf and Mykonos. The city’s main square and Ayias Mavris street are lined with bars, clubs, attracting thousands of party goers all summer long. Limassol , a city by the sea, is one of the largest cities on the island, great for families with its waterparks, restaurants, fabulous beaches and tons of historical attractions, especially the ruins of Amathus to the east. Protaras , situated on the east coast of the island, exists primarily as a tourist resort. Here, you’ll find plenty of sandy beaches and a fantastic variety of watersports, including scuba diving, both for beginners and advanced divers. Top dive sites nearby include Green Bay, the Blue Hole and Malama Bay. Pernera offers some great sandy beaches with beachfront bars and restaurants perfect for visitors traveling with children. You’ll want to check out Larnaca for it’s fabulous beach, Finikoudes. The city is a popular destination as a mooring spot for luxury yachts and the harbor is surrounded by chic cafes and stylish boutiques. Larnaca is also home to the most one of the most religious sites in Cyprus, the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque and the church of St Lazarus. Nicosia , the capital of Cyprus, is unique in that it is split between Greek and Turkish Cyprus. It is often referred to as the ‘Last Divided Capital city of Europe.’ This is because the northern part of the city, along with the northern part of the island, is under military occupation by Turkey. Visitors can walk up to the UN Buffer zone, known as the ‘Green Line’ which runs through the city and divides the island. It is possible to cross over to the Turkish Republic, but you will need your passport to do so. The city is sophisticated and cosmopolitan with many beautiful landmarks. You'll also find plenty to do when it comes to history and museums, along with plenty of shops and restaurants to enjoy.

The best time to visit Cyprus is the spring which often arrives as early as February. Weather is still favorable in March and April with wild flowers, including over 40 species of orchids, popping up across the ridge of the Besparmak Mountains and the hillsides towards the Akamas headland. The temperatures really start to rise in May and the sun usually lasts all the way through to October. Summer is the best time for sea turtles with conservation projects to be found on Lara Bay and Alagadi Beach. Prices start to fall in autumn, so consider a getaway before the cold and rain of December to January.

Cyprus is small enough for you to get around easily. Roads are good and well-signposted, and traffic moves smoothly. Public transport is limited to buses and service taxis (stretch taxis that run on predetermined routes). There is no train network and no domestic air services in either the North or the South. Four-lane motorways link Nicosia (Lefkosia) with Lemesos and Larnaka, expanding west to Pafos and east to Agia Napa. In Northern Cyprus there is only one motorway, which runs between North Nicosia and Famagusta. Note: The buses don`t run late during the evening so if you want to travel around it`s a good idea to rent a car. For more information visit Getting Arround .

The official currency of Cyprus is the Euro. There are seven denominations in Euro banknotes: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500. They are all distinguished by a different colour and size, with the higher the denomination, the bigger the size. One Euro is divided into 100 cents. There are eight Euro coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent, and 1 and 2 Euro. Currency Exchange: All banks operating in Cyprus offer foreign currency exchange services and quote the exchange rates of the Euro against all major foreign currencies daily. Foreign currency can also be exchanged at hotels.

Just south of Turkey in the eastern  Mediterranean Sea  lies the island of  Cyprus , famed for its rich history, excellent gastronomy and beautiful, rugged landscapes. The Greek poet,  Leonidas , described the island as a land of “ wild weather and volcanoes ”’, and if you  travel to Cyprus  today, you’ll still encounter the dramatic landscapes that inspired his words all those years ago. A meeting point of  Asian and European influences , the island is separated in two, with a Turkish Cypriot northern region and the Greek Cypriot Republic of Cyprus in the south, representative of the two populations that inhabit the island. 

If you love excellent Mediterranean cuisine, beautiful beaches and fascinating historical sights, you’ll savour a  holiday in Cyprus . The capital city of  Nicosia  is an ideal starting point for  tours of Cyprus , although the port city of  Larnaca  and the resort town of  Paphos  are among the most popular holiday destination on the island. Furthermore,  honeymoons to Cyprus  are eternally popular, since the island is said to be the home of  Aphrodite , the Greek goddess of love. 

History of Cyprus

A  trip to Cyprus  is the chance to encounter over  10,000 years of human history . Neolithic villages, such as  Khirokitia , and the remains of some of the oldest wells on earth are among the ancient sites to explore on the island of  Cyprus . Many great powers have left their mark on the highly-coveted island of Cyprus, including the ancient  Greeks, Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians  and  Romans . After a period of  Venetian  rule,  Cyprus  came under the control of the  Ottoman empire  for over 3 00 years , between the 16th and 19th-centuries. To understand the civilizations that have shaped the island, be sure to visit the Greco-Roman ruins of  Kourion , the  Tombs of the Kings  necropolis, the  Sanctuary of Aphrodite  and the Roman-era city of  Salamis  if you  travel to Cyprus. 

In more recent times, Cyprus was  annexed by the UK in 1914 , which soon led to clashes between the Greek and Turkish populations on the island. Many Greek Cypriots believes the British would transfer the island to Greece, and therefore welcomed the occupation, whilst Turkish Cypriots opposed this notion. Major political divisions ensued with violence, coups and military invasions taking place in Cyprus throughout the middle part of the 20th-century. In  1960,   Cyprus gained independence  from the UK, although in  1983  a separate Turkish Cypriot state was established in the north of the island. This  de facto  separation continues today, and the island is home to both the southern  Republic of Cyprus  and the northern  Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.  A narrow  UN buffer zone  exists between the two regions, although hostilities have been absent for a number of years now, with both sides dedicated to maintaining peace.

The  third-largest island  in the Mediterranean,  Cyprus  is bursting with unmissable natural sights. Furthermore, its idyllic climate ensures long, hot and dry summers, perfect for a  beach holiday to Cyprus , alongside mild winters, ideal for getting out and exploring the rugging interior of the island. One of the most photographed natural sights on the island is  Aphrodite’s Rock , said to have transported the  Goddess of Love  to the island in Greek mythology. For hiking trips, visitors can head to the lush scenery of the breathtaking  Cedar Valley.  The trees that grow here are closely related to the famous  Lebanese Cedar.  Alternatively, the dramatic landscapes of the  Akamas Peninsula  and its national park invite you to adventure off the beaten path.
