A Haircut, a Heist, and a Helicopter

Twenty-two years after its release, the first ‘Mission: Impossible’ remains a perfect action movie with a perfect Tom Cruise

At the 18:56 mark of 1996’s Mission: Impossible , Emilio Estevez’s character (technology expert Jack Harmon) has his face caved into his head by a jagged metal bar in an elevator shaft. It happens because there are spikes that point downward on the ceiling of the elevator shaft that come out any time the elevator goes up toward the top floor. The spikes are there to prevent anyone from trying to hide on the top of the elevator, which is a thing people always do whenever an elevator is shown in an action movie, and what Harmon was doing in Mission: Impossible . (He was up there because he was supposed to be hacking into the security system of the building while the rest of his team—the IMF, otherwise known as the Impossible Missions Force—infiltrated the building and got what it was they were trying to get.)

This is what it looks like when it happens, and it’s very gnarly to see but it’s important that you see it because it gives weight to a point I’m going to make in a moment:

tom cruise hairstyle mission impossible 1

But I point out Harmon’s death here for four reasons:

  • I can think of no greater indictment of a man who is supposed to be the technology expert in a group than that man losing control of the system he’s supposed to be hacking and getting a pointy bar rammed through his face. It’d be like if you were a dentist and all your teeth had cavities, except worse than that, because cavities in your teeth are tiny and a cavity in your whole fucking head is not.
  • If you watch the clip , Jack stares up at the spikes for a solid five seconds before the front of his face gets pushed to the back of his head. He didn’t try to slide to the side or move back or lay down flat or anything. (There was a gap between each row of spikes that he definitely could’ve fit in between.) Instead, he just looked up, saw the spikes, waited to hit them, and then let them mash the worst part of his body he could’ve chosen them to mash.
  • I rewatched Mission: Impossible recently (because I’m rewatching all of them to get ready for the newest one, Mission: Impossible—Fallout , which comes out this Friday) and somehow, SOMEHOW, I had completely forgotten about the elevator death scene, and watching the coach of the Mighty Ducks get his head turned into a bowl is only the kind of thing that can happen in a franchise that has had as many iconic moments as the Mission: Impossible franchise (remember the dangling-from-the-ceiling scene or the rock-climbing scene or the motorcycle fight scene or the skyscraper scene or the underwater-with-no-tank scene). Which leads to the last thing, which is probably the most important of all of this …
  • Despite the bigness that the Mission: Impossible movies would eventually grow into, the first Mission: Impossible remains the closest to perfect that any Mission: Impossible movie has ever been.

A Case for Perfection

Tom cruise’s haircut.

It’s actually the best haircut he’s ever had in any movie he’s ever been in. It’s stylish and angular enough that it lives as its own thing but still somehow never interrupts or intrudes on the flawlessness of Cruise’s face. It’s a top-level haircut, really, on par with Brad Pitt’s haircut in Fight Club and Uma Thurman’s in Kill Bill . (There’s also a section in the final third of the movie when we get to see Cruise’s Ethan Hunt a little beaten up and worn down from all of the spy moves he’s had to make and he has juuuuuuuust a tiny amount of stubble and it’s very nearly breathtaking to see how perfectly he wears it.) (Brian De Palma directed Mission: Impossible and he knew exactly how to most effectively weaponize an in-his-prime Tom Cruise.) (Tom Cruise is so handsome in Mission: Impossible that you could probably argue that it’s actually a porno and not an action movie.)

The villain

Jon Voight, who plays Jim Phelps, leader of an IMF team and Ethan Hunt’s mentor, has forever had villainy running through his veins and arteries. If you’re ever watching a movie and Jon Voight shows up in it your first thought should be, “Oh, OK. That’s the bad guy. Cool, cool, cool.” I’m honestly still waiting to see how he double-crosses Nic Cage in National Treasure , because I just know it’s going to happen. (Watching Jon Voight pretend to be a sweet and sincere and well-meaning dad in National Treasure is like watching a great white shark try on a cashmere sweater.) (The only villain that’s ever been better in a Mission: Impossible movie was Philip Seymour Hoffman in Mission: Impossible III .)

The origination of an unbeatable gag

Do you know how many times I’ve fallen for someone wearing a mask in a Mission: Impossible movie? And how many times I’ve incorrectly declared that someone who was not wearing a mask of someone else in a Mission: Impossible movie was wearing a mask of someone else?

A defining action moment for the franchise

Eight things here: (1) The team breaking into Langley to steal the real NOC list still stands—even to this day, more than two decades later—as a great pick if you’re talking about one of the most tense and expertly choreographed moments in an action movie. (2) I remember watching Mission: Impossible in a theater when I was a teenanger. It was the first time I’d ever been to a movie in which the biggest and best part was one that was silent. It was captivating. (3) Watching it at home, there are still parts in it when I can feel myself holding my breath because I don’t want to make any noise and set off the alarms in the room. (4) WHERE THE FUCK DID THAT RAT IN THE VENT COME FROM AND WHY WAS FRANZ SO SET ON KILLING IT? (5) The part when Franz Krieger loses his grip on the rope and Ethan drops down to nearly touching the floor and has to flatten himself out to keep from touching it is, no questions asked, no debates about it, no qualifiers needed, totally and entirely and unbelievably great. (6) THE BEAD OF SWEAT. (7) A big part of the heist is the team has to poison an employee to make him extremely sick extremely quickly. It happens in several heist movies. All I hope for in life is that I am never the guy that a heist crew has to make sick so they can successfully complete their heist. (8) Franz accidentally dropping the knife as he takes the disk from Ethan and trying to say some slick shit to him after Ethan has just pulled off this amazing feat is the most I have ever identified with anyone in a movie. ( Mission: Impossible is so good that we’re nearly done with this article and we’ve still not talked about the exploding gum, the fish tank run, the thing when Hunt tells the guy that he clocked the backup IMF team as soon as he walked in the party, the scene when Hunt first meets Max … )

A very weird but cool thing

After Franz and Ethan and everyone are back at their home base following the Langley heist, Franz demands that he go with Ethan to meet the person who is going to buy the NOC list they’ve just stolen. Ethan brushes him off. Franz tells him that he gets to make the rules now because he’s the one holding the disk with the NOC list on it. And Ethan—and I’m so happy I get to write this—and Ethan, in response to finding out that Franz is holding the NOC list and now using it for leverage, starts doing fucking sleight-of-hand magic tricks. He’s like, “Oh, what’s the matter? You’ve never seen this trick … ” and then makes the disk vanish while Franz stares at him in amazement. Ethan makes the disk reappear and then disappear a few more times, and Franz, who I guess believes in magic, snipes, “Where is it?” Ethan brings it back and Franz storms off, throwing the disk he was holding into a trash bin as he walks out of the room. (And of course it turns out that Franz was holding the actual list the whole time and Ethan bluffed him out of it.)

A neat plot trick and twist

Ethan figures out that Phelps, who was supposed to have been murdered by the same operational mole who killed Harmon, is actually still alive and the true bad guy because he accidents his way into a Bible stamped by the hotel where Phelps talked about staying earlier in the movie. And what’s better: In the very next scene, we see Phelps reappear, make contact with Hunt, and the two of them are sitting at table while Phelps tries to convince Hunt that a different person is the mole. But Hunt, because of the Bible, has already figured out that Phelps is lying. So he’s talking to Phelps about the guy that Phelps is trying to set up, but all the flashbacks we see while Hunt is talking are of Phelps. And I know that it’s a little confusing reading that, and honestly it’s a little confusing in the movie when you’re watching it the first time, too, but that’s to the benefit of Mission: Impossible because every good spy movie needs to be at least 15 percent confusing the first time you watch it because that’s how you know that spies are cooler than you and smarter than you.

A defining moment for action movies

When Phelps gets exposed as the mole and Ethan is chasing after him, Phelps attempts to escape off of a high-speed train to a helicopter flying behind the train (that’s being flown by Franz, who we find out is working with Phelps). As Ethan and Phelps fight one another, Ethan manages to hook a cable from the helicopter onto the back of the train. The train approaches a tunnel and it becomes very clear that Franz is about to get blown the fuck up because the train is going to pull the helicopter into the concrete barrier around the tunnel’s entry point. Except what happens is Franz, at the last possible instant and in a moment of desperate innovation, dips the helicopter down and flies INTO THE TUNNEL right behind the helicopter. The sequence ultimately ends with Franz (the perpetual fuck-up) accidentally crashing the helicopter while trying to use the helicopter blades to slice the top of Ethan’s head off, killing not only himself but also Phelps, who gets crushed underneath the helicopter when it smashes onto the floor and explodes. It’s all very ambitious and very creative and very wonderful to watch. (Watching Franz accidentally kill himself and his friend because he was trying to be petty is the second-most I have ever identified with anyone in a movie.)

Hairtology: The Real Star Of The ‘Mission: Impossible’ Films

Mission: Impossible Movies

Anyone that has sat through a Mission: Impossible film gets the gist of what they’re about. “Your mission, should you choose to accept it…”; check. Plot twist and betrayal; check. Stunts involving Tom Cruise that would make Evil Knievel shit his pants; check. Yet, there’s something else that comes along with these films that speaks volumes, and we’re not talking hair volume.

Actually, yes, we are. Sure, every movie sees Cruise sporting a new do, but each installment in the franchise comes with a level of character growth that gives the film more layers than expected.

Mission: Impossible (1996)

Mission Impossible

In the first adventures of Ethan Hunt, the IMF agent is sporting an immature hairstyle. Most of it looks butchered and was probably done by Hunt himself an hour before he got the call from Kittridge. Hunt is known to be Jim Phelps’s go to “point man” when it comes to most of his missions.

The dynamic of the two falls in the line of “father and son” but also can have Hunt seen as “babied”. When the mission goes tits up, Hunt is thrust into the harsh reality of this world without Phelps there to hold is hand along the way. It’s time for the man to grow up real fast and he has to do it with little to no experience leading a team.

Also, he kind of looks like a shark.

Mission: Impossible 2 (2002)

Hunt is in the middle of his vacation—mountain climbing only using the power of Scientology—when we catch up to the spy and his new do that screams douche bag but I’ll admit that it looks majestic as fuck. Limp Bizkit party in the front, Jack Johnson business in the back. The hair looks like a mixture of Keanu Reeves and Fabio which I’ve dubbed “Keaubio” without shame.

He’s now the leader of his own sanctioned team and wants everyone to know he looks good doing it. His attitude has turned from scared boy to a smug teenager who claims to know what the world is all about. Even when Mission Commander Swanbeck steps in to remind Hunt of his place, the IMF agent can’t help but hold back from saying “You’re not the boss of me”.

When the action ramps up, there are a number of unnecessary flips and spins during his gunfight that would fit perfectly in an action-packed L’Oréal commercial. After the mission was completed, Hunt probably went home, put on his best Ed Hardy shirt, turned on his off-hours lexicon that consists of “dude” or “bro” and drank the finest crafted beer money could buy.

Mission: Impossible 3 (2006)

Mission Impossible 3

In this film, Hunt has become a completely different person. This version of the character took the previous one and most likely bludgeoned him to death with his own longboard. Ethan Hunt decided to end that part of his life by heading down to a reasonably priced barbershop and asked for an adult haircut.

One that would be more fitting for someone that is ready to settle down and take a teaching job in the IMF agency. Unfortunately, what comes with this snip of the hair comes a portion of confidence as well. Mission Impossible 2 Ethan Hunt would’ve take any mission offered from Musgrave in a beer chug heartbeat, but instead had to find comfort and confidence in the confines his workshed surrounded by the smell of pine and tools.

Hunt is even looked at as a mentor or some type of father figure by Lindsey Farris and inadvertently becomes the new Jim Phelps.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol

With his wife out of the way, Ethan is single and ready to mingle. His hairstyle has gone back to its Mission Impossible 2 way but with less bro dog bounce. This could be called his midlife crisis stage. The IMF Secretary, who had called him friend, is killed right before eyes and, once again, he is blamed for a crime that he didn’t commit.

This causes him to question his past efforts and his self-worth to the organization that he has been a part for so many years.  More evidence of a midlife crisis comes in the form of William Brandt. Brandt is seen as a new and improved version of Hunt, and his possible replacement.

For Ethan to feel like he’s still worth a damn and not too old for this shit, Hunt embarks on wild stunts and death defying acts to prove that he’s still got it.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

MIssion Impossible Rogue Nation

This choice of hairstyle is interesting because it’s a mixture of Mission: Impossble 2 and Mission: Impossible 3 . It still has a long enough length to show a more relaxed Hunt but still, business-oriented in the front. The need to overcompensate isn’t there and his confidence level has gone up since we last saw him.

Hunt has begun thinking less of himself and wants to do more to protect the people around him.

He’s even willing to put his life on the line for Benji when the time comes, which is something we haven’t seen in his past adventures.

He’s found a balance within himself because he knows that his mission to find the Syndicate’s existence is sound despite what everyone else is telling him. He’s 100% in the right in his theory and will let his findings speak for itself instead of using the tired old acrobatic drops to do the talking.

Some might call this attention to detail obsessive, weird, or maybe a person with too much time on his hands. I would argue that the hypnotic nature of Cruise’s hair has the power of L. Ron Hubbard flowing through it, giving the mop and the man their power to defy logic.

Just beware of falling into its gaze because once his mane has itself wrapped around you, there’s no hair removal product that will be able to set you free.

  • Goofs Although some would consider a computer room equipped with the three high-tech security systems, meant to prevent any intrusion, as missing the "most basic security measure" of video surveillance, video surveillance is often not permitted in highly classified areas where there is a risk that unauthorized personnel - such as the security personnel - may see the material. The security personnel may theoretically be cleared for that classification but they would not have a "need to know" the information contained within AND video surveillance visible in another area would defy the measures taken to keep the information in a secure room. However, a simple device to lock out the keyboard, of any other I/O devices or ports, when there was no authorised operator officially present, would be simple to implement, very efficient, and pose zero potential for information leakage.

1. Elegant and Pulled Back

popular tom cruise haircuts

For every man, it is very important how to dress for the occasion. Along with that comes opting for the right hairstyle. It sometimes seems really easy, but it’s not always that way. However, the fact that it is not easy doesn’t have to mean that it can’t be simple.

We see that on this 2014 photo of Tom Cruise from the premiere of his movie Edge of Tomorrow where he chose to grow his hair a little bit and then pull it to the side and backward to achieve a classy, elegant look.

2. Slick and Casual Hairstyle

casual hairstyle of tom cruise

Around the beginning of the decade, Cruise rocked a slick and casual haircut. He wasn’t afraid to show his cowlick and his medium length hair still falls around his face in a perfect way. We are sure that all men in their thirties admire this cool look. At least we do!

3. Cool Spikes

spiky hairstyle of tom cruise

To nurture the image of a cool guy, Tom Cruise frequently combs his hair upwards and pulls it to the side, creating cool spikes in his bangs . This is one of the haircuts of Cruise that certainly makes him look younger and looks great with a pair of cool sunglasses and nice rocker-jacker. One thing is for sure – he never fails to prove why he is considered to be one of the most handsome men alive.

4. Sexy Bedhead Hairstyle

tom cruise messy hairstyle

This sexy bedhead hairstyle Tom Cruise wore at the Los Angeles premiere of his film Super 8 in June 2011.  This was definitely not the first time that he rocked a long hairstyle , but it sometimes seems as though through the years it only gets better and better.

It sure looks like a style that not everyone can pull off, but if you like how it looks, you can try growing your hair. Tom Cruise’s long haircut makes any man look younger and doesn’t require a lot of effort on a daily basis.

5. Blonde Highlights

tom cruise hairstyle with blonde highlights

We are all witnesses of Tom Cruise’s hairstyle changes over the years. He has indeed worn a lot of different interesting hairstyles which have all suited him really well. However, one thing that is not spoken of a lot is his hair color.

Partly that is because it usually is his normal dark brown color. Here we have an example from 2011 when he was filming the movie Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol where he wore subtle honey blonde highlights , which really made his green eyes pop.

6. Simple and Short

tom cruise short hairstyle

Cruise showed once again that it doesn’t have to take a lot of work for a man to look sexy and elegant. He appeared on the premiere of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol with a short and simple haircut, slightly slicked to the side to go with his classy suit. One true gentleman, that’s for sure!

7. Classic Tom Cruise Hairstyle

classic tom cruise hairstyles

One important aspect of aging for both men and women is – dignity. From this 2018 photo of Tom, we do notice that he looks a little bit older and the hairstyle hasn’t changed much from that 2016 pulled back hairstyle that Tom Cruise wore.

But it has just reached absolute perfection and evolved into a personal trademark of this movie icon that just looks better and better.

8. Cruise’s Shaggy Hair

Tom Cruise Shaggy hairstyle

He went for a shaggy  razor cut with angled layers and slightly side swept bangs to frame his strong features. This haircut of Tom Cruise was in trend for quite a long time,

9. Tom Cruises Buzz Cut

Tom Cruise Buzz cut hair

Tom Cruise is all about style & hairdo personified. Blessed with a thick, healthy hair Tom Cruise has been experimenting with his hair often to suit a wide array of characters and to retain a fresh look. Tom sported a more casual look with buzzed clipper cut that complements his rugged facial hair.

10. Tapered Hair

Tom Cruise Tapered Hairdo

He preferred a classic tapered hairdo with short sides and a slightly more length on the crown. Cruise at times sported the fringe with full bangs across the forehead, other times he opted for a side-swept angled forelock.

Sometimes he tried a side part to add volume and lift to his hair. The dash of color added to his hair added depth to his chestnut locks.

11. 80s Top Gun Military Cut

In the iconic 1986 film “Top Gun”, Tom Cruise sported a military-inspired haircut to fit his character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. This haircut, often called the ‘Maverick Cut’, was a classic ’80s hairstyle featuring closely cropped sides and a slightly longer top, perfectly aligned with the clean and professional standards of the military.

12. Ethan Hunt Pompadour

When you hear the name of Tom Cruise which movie series comes to your mind first? For me, it’s the Mission: Impossible series. Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, sported many cool hairstyles ranging from short to long in length.

In the picture, he rocks a pompadour hairstyle characterized by its voluminous top and shorter sides. The Ethan Hunt Pompadour perfectly complements his role as a spy in the series.

13. Maverick Returns With Hard Part Comb Over Haircut

Returning to his iconic role in the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022, Cruise sported a modern version of his ’80s Military Cut. This matured version, featuring a short hard part comb over haircut, reflects the growth and progression of his character.

Celebrities are always the talk of the town and showbiz because of their style, attire, and looks. Whatever they do it becomes a trend! Tom Cruise’s haircuts have never disappointed his fan base either!

14. The Last Samurai Long Middle-Parted Hair

For “The Last Samurai”, Cruise adopted a completely different hairstyle. He kept his hair long with a middle part. In this hairstyle, the hair reaches to his neck. This transformation made his fans go crazy over his hairstyle.

15. Tom Cruise’s Latest Hairstyle- Wavy Mullet

In his latest public appearance, Tom Cruise has been spotted sporting a trendy and unique hairstyle known as the Wavy  Mullet. This hairstyle features shorter hair on the sides and front, gradually transitioning into longer, wavy locks at the back.

This fusion of lengths creates a striking contrast and adds a touch of individuality to the overall style. The wavy texture adds volume and movement, giving the hairstyle a relaxed and effortlessly cool vibe.

In the 90s and 80s

Tom Cruise Long Hair

In the 80s and 90s, Tom Cruise was known for his iconic hairstyle, which consisted of a short and sleek haircut. He frequently styled his hair with a side part and combed it neatly, which created a sophisticated and polished look. The cut was tapered around the sides and back, with the top being slightly longer to add texture and dimension. The hairstyle perfectly complemented his chiseled features and charming persona, making him a heartthrob during that era.

Mission Impossible Hairstyle

Tom Cruise Long Hair

Tom Cruise’s hairstyle in Mission Impossible is a short and textured crop with a side part. The cut is tapered around the sides and back, with the top being left longer to create volume and texture. The hair is styled in a messy and tousled way, which gives him a rugged and daring look, perfect for his role as Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible franchise. His hair is regularly styled with some product to hold the texture and volume in place, giving off a carefree and effortless vibe.

Top Gun Maverick Hairstyle

Tom Cruise Long Hair

Tom Cruise’s hairstyle in Top Gun Maverick is a modern take on his iconic 80s and 90s look. He sports a short and well-groomed haircut, with a side-swept fringe that adds volume and texture to the top of the head. The sides and back are tapered, giving a clean and polished look to the overall hairstyle. Cruise’s hair is always perfectly styled, reflecting the precision and attention to detail required in his character. This classic and timeless haircut suits his mature demeanor and sophisticated persona.

Last Samurai Hairstyle

Tom Cruise Long Hair

Tom Cruise’s hairstyle in Last Samurai is a nod to the traditional Japanese Samurai warrior style. His hair is styled in a bun, called “Chonmage,” which is shaved on the sides and tied at the top of the head. It gives a regal and stoic appearance, which represents the disciplined and honorable nature of his character, Captain Nathan Algren. The hairstyle requires attention to detail and maintenance, reflecting the character’s strict values and training as a Samurai warrior. The hairstyle added to the authenticity and realism of the film and showcased Tom Cruise’s versatility as an actor.

Tom Cruise Long Hair

The straight, middle-part cut is one of Tom’s classic long hairstyles, which requires minimal upkeep and can be achieved using a brush, comb and styling wax. He regularly pairs this look with a beard that complements his unique facial features.

For a more dramatic appearance, Tom can also be seen flaunting a long, wavy haircut. This look can be achieved by applying a generous amount of volumizing mousse and blow-drying the hair to create texture. Tease the top layer of hair and scrunch the ends for a beach-ready appearance.

Tom Cruise proves that long hair is not restricted to hippies, rockstars, and trendsetters. With a bit of creativity, effort, and dedication to bold hairstyles, anyone can make an impact with long hair.

We love the Tom Cruise’s long hair . He  has sported a signature long hairstyle for decades, now considered one of the most iconic looks in modern pop culture. Tom Cruise looks completely different with all new hair for Mission Impossible 8 filming

Top Gun star Tom Cruise flaunted his new lightly coloured hair-do as he boarded a helicopter in London, England, to finish filming the eighth unnamed Mission: Impossible movie

Tom Cruise showed off his brand new hairstyle as he arrived in London this week, before hopping into a helicopter to fly to filming for Mission Impossible 8 .

The Top Gun star had a new highlighted hair-do that was a lighter colour than previously seen on the actor. His luxurious locks were windswept from the helicopter blades and Tom had a big cheesy smile on his face.

Tom flew into the UK from Tampa, Florida, aboard his private jet. He then was photographed getting on a black helicopter that would take him to the set for his upcoming project, Mission Impossible 8.

Tom wore white Nike trainers that were left untied. He donned a pair of jeans and a long-sleeve navy, knitted shirt that was rolled up to his elbows. In his left hand, he held a black backpack.

The 61-year-old has finally been allowed to work on the film since the SAG-AFTRA strike ended recently, letting actors go back to work. It was the longest strike in union history, starting back in July.

Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part Two, as the film is rumoured to be called, had started filming before the strike but had to halt production. The film was also set to premiere on June 28, 2024 but with the strike has now been pushed back to May 23, 2025.

Tom wasn't just a passenger in the helicopter, he was seen climbing into the pilot's seat. The star got his flying qualifications in 1994, giving him almost 30 years of experience flying.

The previous Mission: Impossible movie, subtitled Dead Reckoning Part One, premiered in July. It underperformed at the box office compared to the other Mission: Impossible films.

It grossed about $567.5 million (about £454.5 million) at the box office. Industry professionals weren't surprised, as the same weekend it hit cinemas was the same weekend as the famous Barbenheimer event.

Barbenheimer was what many people called the fact that Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer movies were released on the same day. Fans flocked to the theatres for a double feature watch of the films.

In comparison to the Mission: Impossible film, Barbie grossed $1.442 billion (about £1.15 billion) and Oppenheimer grossed $950.5 million (about £751.2 million).

Mission: Impossible Director Praises Tom Cruise’s ‘Sensational Wig’ For Dead Reckoning Reshoots

Apparently not every scene in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One features Tom Cruise's actual hair.

Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise

The Mission: Impossible franchise took on its toughest challenge when it made the decision to film two M:I movies back-to-back. The decision was only made more difficult by the global pandemic that first delayed Mission: Impossible 7 entirely and then caused shooting to run at a snail's pace once it could begin again. This caused a lot of new and unexpected complexities in production, including the fact that Tom Cruise needed a wig for some scenes.

We already know that the Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning reshoots were a little wild, with some shots taking place at Tom Cruise’s garage because director Christopher McQuarrie realized he needed some new shots at the last minute. But speaking with the Empire Spoiler Special Movie Podcast ( via ScreenRant ), he also reveals that reshoots required Tom Cruise to be in a wig for a few scenes, including the final moments between Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and Haley Atwell’s Grace. McQuarrie explained…

The one I absolutely love is Ethan and Hailey [Atwell] when he says goodbye to her at the end. And she says, ‘Go.’ That shot was shot two years later than the shots on either side of it. Originally they had a different piece of behavior that, in the course of the new ending of the movie, it just didn’t work.

Apparently the first of the two Mission: Impossible movies being filmed evolved enough over time that by the end the original version of the farewell scene wasn’t right, so it needed to be redone. The problem was, Tom Cruise had very different hair by that point.

The issue was the reshoots for Dead Reckoning Part One were taking place while principal photography for Dead Reckoning Part Two was happening , and apparently Cruise has very different hair in that movie, so it needed to be covered in order to work in the earlier scene. McQuarrie continued…

Tom’s wearing a wig in that shot because he’s got his [Part Two] hair. So keep in mind that any pickups and reshoots that we did after we started shooting Part Two, Tom’s got a different hairstyle. He’s wearing a wig in a lot of the movie. In the [food delivery scene] he’s wearing a wig. And it’s a sensational wig by our amazing makeup department.

Tom Cruise has gone back and forth between his Top Gun -style short hair and a shaggier style throughout his career, and even within the Mission: Impossible franchise.  It sounds like he may be doing that even within the two parts of Dead Reckoning .

This is actually a potentially interesting detail as it would seem to confirm that Part Two isn’t going to pick up immediately after the events of Part One , or at least there will be a significant time jump at some point in the film. How else will Cruise's hair be changing so much? It makes a certain amount of logical sense. When you’re busy saving the world, who has time to get a haircut?

The New Tom Cruise Haircut is Mission Possible

Tom Cruise Haircut

Just when you thought there couldn’t be yet another Mission Impossible movie, a new one arrives and Tom Cruise is as tough and tantalizing as ever. It does beg the question – how many more editions to this sequence of films must there be before they realise the mission is actually quite doable? Say what you like about Tom Cruise and his choice of a motion picture, but if there’s one thing which we can agree on it’s his immaculate appearance. This is the appearance which scored the likes of Holmes and Kidman in their heydays, so we should take it seriously and examine the magic close-up.

First of all, you may think Tom has had a pretty consistent haircut throughout his career but there have been some slight differences. Cast your mind or run a Google search to 2010 and 2009 Tom Cruise and look at the cut he’s cooked up there. Much like his long, successful career, Mr Cruise has managed to subtly keep the fire roasting with little tweaks and evolutions to keep himself cool.

The 2018 Tom Cruise Haircut

This is 2018 Tom and it’s the ‘do you will see being ruffled by explosions in his next blockbuster. This style is scissor-cut close to the head with a clean finish along the edges. The top is left lengthy enough to sweep back slightly and let your very own Holmes or Kidman play with. This look will need maintaining once a month by a visit to a reliable barbershop in New York City like Pall Mall Barbers (located at the Rockefeller Centre). Your expert barber will advise you as to which product you need for shine and hold.

What Product to Use?

We recommend a Light Dressing Cream as a general starting point for this simple but stylish appearance. The light dressing cream helps to obtain the style all day long, whilst still being exceptionally easy to wash out at any chosen time. Perfect for short styles like that of Tom Cruises without any added feeling of stiffness.

Apply a small amount using the fingers to damp or dry hair, and work from roots to ends.

Tom cruise films london protest scene for mission: impossible 8 in new set video.

Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg film a hectic scene together in a new Mission: Impossible 8 set video, which shows the pair amidst a protest in London.

  • Tom Cruise hugs Simon Pegg as a crowd protests around them in a new Mission: Impossible 8 set video.
  • The scene is filmed in London and features a heavy police presence.
  • Whether Mission: Impossible 8 is the last entry in the franchise probably depends on how well it performs at the box office.

A new Mission: Impossible 8 set video shows Tom Cruise filming a scene in the middle of a large London protest. After first playing superspy Ethan Hunt back in 1996, Cruise has returned for six sequels, the most recent of which, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning , came out last summer. The movie star is reteaming with director Christopher McQuarrie for an upcoming eighth film, which has now been filming on and off for essentially two years.

As the planned Mission: Impossible 8 release date approaches, a new video shared by UnBoxPHD on YouTube shows Cruise and costar Simon Pegg, who plays Benji, filming a scene together in London as a protest kicks off around them.

Click here to see the Mission: Impossible 8 Set Video

The video, which is available at the link above, shows Cruise and Benji embracing each other before walking off through the crowd as a cameraman captures the action. Extras can be seen pumping their fists in the air and looking angry, though the context of the protest is not yet clear. There's also a heavy police presence in the scene, with London officers shown in the background holding rifles.

10 Biggest Details & Reveals From Mission: Impossible 8's Set Photos & Videos

Will mission: impossible 8 be the last one, what tom cruise has said about the franchise's future.

Originally, Mission: Impossible 8 had the Dead Reckoning: Part Two subtitle, with the film serving as a continuation of last summer's sequel. When the seventh film underperformed at the box office, however, this subtitle was dropped, and the next installment now doesn't have an official title. Though the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning reviews were glowing from critics and audiences, the somewhat muted box office (due in part to the behemoth that was Oppenheimer and Barbie 's dual release) has evidently resulted in a bit of a course correction, the extent of which remains to be seen.

There was talk before the release of Mission: Impossible 7 that the eighth installment could serve as the last, but this was never officially confirmed. Cruise himself said last summer that he hopes to continue making new entries in the franchise until he's nearly 80. McQuarrie, too, said last June that there are already ideas for Mission: Impossible 9 and potentially beyond . These comments, however, were before the seventh movie failed to meet expectations.

Cruise is expected to appear in the in-development Top Gun 3 and is gearing up to make a movie aboard the I.S.S. in outer space. If Mission: Impossible 9 does happen, it could be a number of years away.

Unlike the cliffhanger Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning ending , it seems likely that the next movie will feature a more definitive conclusion for Ethan and his team . This way, if the movie is met with a more muted box office response, it can serve as the final chapter if need be. If Mission: Impossible 8 is a success, however, it seems very likely that Cruise and McQuarrie will team up for yet another action-packed adventure.

Mission Impossible: Why Tom Cruise loves Paris

Inspiration

Paris Cultural Heritage Cities

Image de la bande-annonce de Mission Impossible Fallout.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 15 March 2024, updated on 26 April 2024

We’ve just seen the latest instalment of the Mission Impossible film series, and as expected, it delivers! At the world premiere of the film, Tom Cruise was full of praise for Paris, chosen as the main location for his impressive stunts. Here are 6 good reasons to go see Tom Cruise in Paris on the big screen…

1. Helicopter flight over the Eiffel Tower

When you’re Tom Cruise and you have just 120 minutes to save the world (the plot is about a race against time to recover a stolen consignment of plutonium) the most practical solution is by helicopter. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the Seine, the three floors of the iconic Eiffel Tower, and action along the quays of the Seine. Panoramic views are the upshot.

2. Parachute landing on the glass roof of the Grand Palais

Dropped (for real) by a plane over Paris, Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill land on the glass roof of the Grand Palais and pitch into the middle of a huge party. A little stunned by the fall (plunging 10,000m will do that), they cross the dance floor (what a fabulous place for a party) before completely destroying the men’s room during a violent punch-up. A memorable scene.

3. Betrayed at the Trocadero

For secret agents, treachery is as common as drinking a glass of water. But, if you’re going to even think about plotting against Tom Cruise, you’d better do it well - and big time. The action takes place far from indiscreet ears, on the esplanade of Trocadero, facing the Eiffel Tower. Classic.

@tomcruise just posted a new photo from Mission: Impossible- Fallout! #MissionImpossible Une publication partagée par Mission: Impossible (@missionimpossible) le 27 Janv. 2018 à 11 :56 PST

4. Rendezvous in the gardens of the Royal Palace

There’s nothing quite like a secret rendezvous with a former love interest to heat up the action. The perfect place for a meeting? The gardens of the Royal Palace, between the arrow straight paths and iconic columns created by artist Daniel Buren. Save the world, love art and each other, nothing else matters. Sizzling.

5. Wrong way round the Arc de Triomphe

As you can see from the picture, Tom Cruise/Ethan Hunt is about to take enter the vicinity of l'Etoile, a junction of twelve avenues. Going the wrong way around the Arc de Triomphe, the most rock'n'roll traffic intersection in France, our hero realizes the fantasy of every self-respecting Parisian motorist. Insane.

6. Speed boat chase through underground canals

Our very well-informed hero knows perfectly how to traverse the underground tunnels of the Canal Saint-Martin, which stretches between the Bastille and the basin of Villette. This is one of the trendiest districts of Paris, a place of tranquil daytime delights and lively evening outings. This time, the canal saves his life. Ah that Tom...

Several images of the actor sprinting either away or towards the latest global threat have also emerged, and offer our first look at the next Mission: Impossible sequel, which was formerly titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two before changes were made behind the scenes .

Released in July last year, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen. The Mission: Impossible follow-up finds Tom Cruise back as Ethan Hunt, who this time must save the world from a rogue AI known as “The Entity.” You can check out the official synopsis and trailer for Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning below.

“Ethan Hunt and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: to track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.”

What Will Mission: Impossible 8 Be About?

It is currently unknown exactly what Mission: Impossible 8 will be about but, considering that movies 7 and 8 were initially intended to be a two-parter, we can no doubt expect the next movie to carry over some of the plot elements from its predecessor. This likely includes both the AI enemy known as The Entity , and the villainous Gabriel (Esai Morales), a terrorist with ties to Ethan Hunts's past. We can also expect to see the core cast return, including Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, and Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, as well as newcomer Hayley Atwell as Grace.

How the Mission: Impossible Title Change Could Save the Franchise

The rest of the ensemble will reportedly include Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Pom Klementieff as Paris, and Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, alongside Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Lucy Tulugarjuk. Following the apparent fate of Ilsa Faust , it is currently unknown whether Rebecca Ferguson will be involved.

Mission: Impossible 8 is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 23, 2025, by Paramount Pictures.
