How Pros "Barely Swing," but Hit the Ball a Country Mile

Have you ever noticed how Tour Players CRUSH the ball, even when it looks like they're swinging easy?

Dumb question, I know. We've all noticed this at one time or another.

Well, the reason pros can bomb the ball effortlessly is because...

All Great Golfers Have One Thing in Common:

Hi, I'm John Novosel, Jr., and I'm proud to say my dad was part scientist, part teaching pro, and one of the brightest minds in golf.

One day, while analyzing a Tour pro's swing, he stumbled upon something amazing:

He noticed the pro's backswing took exactly three times as long as the downswing.

In other words, a 3-to-1 ratio.

tempo 2 tours

Intrigued, we grabbed a video of Tiger Woods and noticed the same 3:1 backswing-to-downswing ratio.

And tha t's when we had our Eureka! moment.

We spent the next several days watching every video we could find of the world's greatest golfers including...

Jack Nicklaus...

Gary Player...

Arnold Palmer...

Sam Snead...

Tom Waston...

Byron Nelson.

Guess what?

They were all 3 to 1.

Yes, their swing motions were very different, but...

Nearly Every Great Golfer Has this "Magical" 3:1 Backswing-to- Downswing Ratio

This includes today's stars such as...

Scottie Scheffler

24:8 Tempo = 3:1

Wyndham Clark

18:6 Tempo = 3:1

21:7 Tempo = 3:1

Yes, some pros have faster swings...

And some have slower swings...

But virtually ALL of them have a 3:1 backswing-to-downswing RATIO.

In other words, the same TEMPO.

When we analyzed the swings of "amateur" golfers, you can guess what we found:

Yep, their tempos were all different — no consistency.

So we started documenting all this and...

Our Discovery Became a New York Times Best Seller...

tempo 2 tours

...And Yale University Scientists Verified Our Results

About eight years after we published our book...

Scientists at Yale University published their own independent research paper called, "A Biomechanical Understanding of Tempo in the Golf Swing."

tempo 2 tours

They discovered, like us, that the backswing-to-downswing ratio for nearly all great golfers is 3:1.

Yes, every time and for every player, including...

Tiger Woods 3:1

Jack Nicklaus 3:1

Ben Hogan 3:1

Gary Player 3:1

Sam Snead 3:1

Rory McIlroy 3:1

Ricky Fowler 3:1

Phil Mickelson 3:1

Louis Oosthuizen 3:1

Annika Sorenstam 3:1

Henrik Stenson 3:1

Ian Poulter 3:1

Ernie Els 3:1

Greg Norman 3:1

Most Importantly... the 3:1 Tempo Works Wonders for "Regular" Golfers Like You!

You're probably thinking, "I'm not a pro golfer. Why do I care what THEIR tempo is?"

Because the 3:1 tempo works for everyone.

"Regular" golfers who have tried it are saying this...

"So many bad habits disappear on their own...my body is finally working as one."

"Unbelievable simple concept results in wonderful gains on the course."

— Tracey S.

"Gave me one of those 'light bulb' moments...flushed my 4-iron off the tee. They were all dead straight."

"The simplicity really is quite amazing."

"This may be the golden key...so basic, but so essential"

"Immediately started playing better...and I've been playing for 40+ years"

"The 'missing link' I thought I would never find...distance and accuracy."

"Removes the mechanics...frees up your body to respond with a tempo that delivers power and balance."

"My index dropped from 22 to 15.6...amazing all golf coaches don't put this at the top of their lists."

"Instantly picked up accuracy and distance...drives were 20+ yards longer."

This Isn't Shocking to Golf's Great Players and Coaches, Who Said This about Tempo...

tempo 2 tours

"You can correct the errors in your swing by correcting the tempo."

— Jack Nicklaus, 18-Time Major Champion

tempo 2 tours

"Tempo is the glue that sticks your golf swing together."

— Nick Faldo, 6-Time Major Champion

"One of the easiest things you can do right now to start hitting better shots is improving the quality of your rhythm."

— Jeff Ritter, Golf Digest #1 Coach in Oregon

So, How Do YOU Learn the Perfect 3:1 Tempo?

For a long time, even the best-of-the-best golf instructors have said...

"You can't really teach great tempo."

And they were right.

Using older methods, it was a hard concept to learn.

That's why my dad and I invented a NEW way for you to achieve perfect tempo:

Introducing...

The tour tempo app.

tempo 2 tours

"Hear" Your Way to Perfect Tempo

Here's how it works:

The Tour Tempo app plays audible "tones."

1. Start your backswing on the first tone...

2. Start your downswing on the second tone...

3. Make impact on the third tone.

Yes, it's really easy...and REALLY effective!

Let Me Show You in This Quick Demo...

As you can see in the video, it's OK if you have a faster or slower swing speed...

Tour Tempo has faster tones (18:6) and slower tones (30:10) to suit you...

But they all get you into the magic backswing-to-downswing RATIO of 3:1.

tempo 2 tours

Improves Your Short Game, Too!

tempo 2 tours

Not only does Tour Tempo adjust the speed of the tones to match your swing...

It also adjusts so you can use it to build a bulletproof short game.

That's right: during our research, we noticed that tour pros also have the same tempo with pitches and chip shots...

But it's a 2:1 backswing-to-downswing ratio.

Yes, Swing Problems DISAPPEAR When You Have the Right Tempo!

When you get your tempo right, everything else falls into place.

You immediately get...

✅ Effortless and powerful ball striking

✅ The proper swing plane

✅ Automatic timing and rhythm

✅ The perfect release

And by focusing on tempo, you do NOT need to worry about...

❌ What starts your backswing?

❌ What starts the downswing?

❌ What should your arms and legs be doing?

❌ Where should your head be?

❌ What is the proper weight shift?

You can also stop bouncing from one swing theory to another.  Finally!

So, Does Tour Tempo Really Work?

"Thanks to John Novosel's research...we know virtually all good golf swings are built on a 3-to-1 ratio."

"20 more yards...the new 3-to-1 swing speed ratio for perfect, powerful tempo."

"Perfect score...Tour Tempo is scientifically proven, it’s easy to use, and it will help you in every facet of the game...the results are amazing: longer, straighter shots."

tempo 2 tours

"Improvement the very first time you take it to the range...There's not a single golfer who should not have it."

And Here is What Golfers are Saying...

"This thing works. Dropped 7 strokes off my game in 2 weeks. If you haven’t given this a shot you are doing yourself a disservice."

"This is unbelievable, really amazing. Better ball contact both with the long game and the short game. I am really impressed."

"The best training aid that I have bought or used in my golfing career."

— J. Miller

"It works like magic. I highly recommend this product"

"PW through 5i have picked up at least 20 yards and my driver now back to ~250!!!"

"I've never hit so many pure shots in a row...From short irons to driver, it worked."

Publisher Description

Tiger Woods...Greg Norman...Ben Hogan...What secret do these and nearly all golf legends share? The answer is identical swing tempo.    This startling discovery was made by John Novosel as he studied film footage of the PGA greats. He was searching for the key that made their swings so effortless and powerful, and he found out that nearly every champion demonstrated the same tempo in their swings, a common ratio between takeaway and downswing.  His breakthrough book,  Tour Tempo , published by Doubleday in 2004, was an instant classic, an international best-seller and has been translated into Japanese and Spanish language editions. Its central argument -- that tempo, the most important fundamental of the golf swing, can be learned quickly and easily without expensive lessons or exhaustive practice -- is now accepted by swing coaches at every level of the game. Tour Tempo's premises have been validated by an Independent Scientific Study performed by the Departments of Physics and Biomechanics at Yale University. The Titleist Performance Institute has also confirmed our research.  The book included instructional videos and the now famous Tour Tempo Tones. These gave golfers what they have been searching for all these years- immediate and dramatic improvement.  And now over 100,000 golfers worldwide, from beginners through Major Championship winners on the PGA Tour, have immediately and dramatically improved their games by using Tour Tempo.  But  Tour Tempo , now in its 11th printing, covered only the full-swing shots. Now Team Novosel and John Garrity are back with a sequel devoted to the short game -- the putts, chips, greenside pitches and bunker shots that make up the majority of strokes played in a round of golf.  Tour Tempo 2  includes a download link to the new Tour Tempo short-game tones and the videos that explain exactly how to incorporate them into your golf game. Simply by practicing to the short-game tones, the weekend golfer can master the correct rhythm in minutes. Got the dreaded "yips" with your putter or chipping club?  TT2  has the cure. Can't hit those short game shots from 40 to 60 yards?  TT2  gives you the feel for the tournament player's favorite stroke saver. Terrified of greenside bunker shots?  TT2  reveals the tempo secret that makes sand play so easy for tour pros. Tour Tempo 2  is more than a short-game tutorial. The full swing is explored in several chapters that pick up where the first book left off, including a cutting edge revelation - about how you can combine Physics and Tour Tempo to achieve a consistently powerful golf swing that you might never have thought possible! For more information about the authors and  TT2  - go to the Tour Tempo website.

Customer Reviews

Help me realize my swing tempo, also open my eyes to why my long game is on point but my short game would suffer or vise versa during a round there are two different tempos. During a round I was stuck on one tempo either 3:1 or 2:1 for every shot, now my scoring for a golf round has drop dramatically. Thanks Tour Tempo!

Exceptional System, Regardless of Swing....

TT 2 is a great follow-up to John Novosel's initial book, Tour Tempo, which covers the long game(full swing) and also goes into the studies that lead to both books. As I said in the title, unlike most(if not all) swing theories/systems out there, that force one to adapt to that theory, the Tour Tempo system can be adapted to any swing, working on the tempo side to improve direction, distance and through two drills, the "L" & "Y" drills, will have you hitting the ball better and more consistently than you ever have. I would also strongly recommend the Novosel's apps Tour Tempo "Total Game" & the Tour Tempo "Frame Counter." And the best part of all of this? If you have questions, problems or just want to discuss the material, John Novosel is a phone call or e-mail away! How many other pros/authors on this page can you do this with? This will be the best investment that you could make in your game. Then get John's first book, then the apps. You'll be glad that you did, and mad that you didn't discover this sooner. The best to ya. Have a great season! :-)
Wow I wish I found this book years ago. Ive seen a drastic, instant improvement in my game. Shot my first eagle 162 yards out. Still have some work to do but the things I have learned in this book are truly the winning edge.

“Good golly miss Molly!!! I have spent thousands of dollars over 40 years on all kinds of gadgets, swing improvements. You name it – I’ve likely spent money on it. As I was approaching 50, I committed to getting my HC from 12 to scratch. After thousands on lessons and ~500 balls a day, I got to 4.6, suffering subsequent injuries that has now limited the amount I can play or practice. Over the last two years, I’ve lost ~10-20 yards on every club and the HC climbed to >6.5. Till today that is!!! The Tour Tempo Total Game app is absolutely the best $30 I have ever spent. I hit 200 balls on the range. PW through 5i has picked up at least 20 yards and my driver now back to ~250!!! What was truly remarkable was how a simple 21:7 ratio allowed me to work the ball again…L —> R and R —> L. BTW…all I hear is the three tones and it’s been 3 hours. Do they go away?!! Haha! Thanks John!” – Sent by Nolan in the US

Three Books,

Three revolutionary secrets..

TOUR TEMPO  started the revolution with its groundbreaking discoveries that shattered the paradigms on rhythm in the golf swing. But it also delivered the simple and effective Tour Tempo tones so golfers of all abilities could swing faster and employ the 3:1 ratio used by the greatest players of today and yesterday. The Result: Longer and Straighter shots… with less thinking!

TOUR TEMPO 2  continued the work of the original with a focus on the short game and a new ratio. The 2:1 ratio and the new Tour Tempo short game tones. The Result: wedge shots, chips and putts closer to (or in) the hole!

TOUR TEMPO FORCE  delivers the third secret by combining the tenets of Tour Tempo with the physics of harmonic oscillators and pendulums, explaining how you can optimize your long and short games by applying the proper force in the backswing and downswing. Specific drills are explained and demonstrated, plus for the first time in 10 years, we introduce new Tour Tempo tones. The Result: more focus and more speed!

I have been lnvolved in long drive and speed development for many years and I always try and work with the best. For me John Novosel Jr. is the best speed trainer on the planet and I have used his speed training tones, equipment and training routines for many years. His new Force feelings and tones add another level to his training and speed gains. If you are serious about getting faster and bringing maximum force to your swing he is the go to man.

I played men’s league and had some CAREER drives, several 300-320. Nearly all were in fairway. Until last month drives were in 270-280 range. Not only that—I shot a career best 30 (-6) for 9 holes. Four birdies, thanks to shorter irons/wedges off of the longer drives. And a chip in for eagle—from next to green on a par five, on a hole I usually can’t reach in two..! Just shows me what I suspected, that if I can gain ~20yds+ consistently it will help my scores a LOT. Already has. Needless to say we won our match. So, THANK YOU!!

Hi, John, I am sorry to keep flooding you with emails, but I am just so excited about your TT Force book. Wow! And I am only through two thirds of the book. I just finished the chapter about the case studies and the things required to enhance speed. I don’t do any of those things now! All four of the drills (e.g. the arms up drill) are places where I know that I am deficient. In six weeks (or whenever we get together) I will be much improved in all of them.

I have never seen any book that delves into long hitting as well as this book does. Hopefully, when we get together, you can fine tune, or even gross tune, my swing for some added pop. I will try to not keep alarming you with every revelation that I come across in Force.

Thanks for a great book. For what it’s worth, while I got a lot out of the initial part of the book, these latest couple of chapters have been eyeball popping. I can’t wait to get back to the book.

With 36 years of competitive amateur and professional golf, working with John and performing his drills was the most fun I’ve ever had with an instructor. With little or no more added effort I went from 255 to a 293 carry just after seven swings, and that was the real fun! His approach brought out the athleticism in my golf swing.

The Left Rough

Putting Tempo: The Rhythm of Better Putting

Putting is so simple yet so complex at the same time. One of the most important topics but not often discussed is the need for the right  putting tempo .

The right putting tempo will improve how the putter head moves and ensure good speed control from all distances. Because let’s face it, is there anything worse than when your first putt ends up way short or too long on a lag putt. Then you’re faced with a tough second putt and unfortunately a lot more total putts per round .

When you master the tempo of your putting stroke, your speed control will improve like never before. Today we’ll discuss a great drill, why most players fail with a consistent stroke, and how tempo can help you become a great putter.

Putting Tempo 101

In an old YouTube video called “Secrets of the Short Game” by Phil Mickelson he said that most amateurs do two things incorrectly with their putting stroke.

First, they take too long of a backstroke, which leads to deceleration and missing a lot of putts short. This is from inconsistent rhythm and altering their tempo based on the length of the putt. Second, they under-read putts 90% of the time which makes it nearly impossible to make a lot of mid and long range putts.

To make more from short range and make the hole feel like a bucket, you need acceleration with the right tempo.

Key Takeaways

  • Putting tempo plays a key role in getting putts to the hole and mastering distance control.
  • Short game tempo (including putting) is different from long game tempo and slightly faster.
  • Having the right tempo with your putter will help improve your strike, get the ball to the hole, and hopefully improve your confidence.

Keep reading to learn more about this important concept so you can make more putts than ever.

Putting Tempo

Short Game Tempo

So, what is the correct tempo for putting?

According to the book Tour Tempo 2, the short game tempo is 2:1.  This means the backswing for chips/pitches) takes twice as long as the downswing. For putting this means the backstroke takes twice as much time as the forward stroke.

This is a big difference from a normal tempo on the full swing which is 3:1. This concept is discussed in detail in the original book,  Tour Tempo , and one of the best golf books you can read. When you master your tempo – with a driver, irons, and putter – your game will change.

So first things first, putting tempo is faster than a full swing.

Here’s the thing, great putters have the same tempo for all putts – whether they’re 5 or 50 feet. The only thing that changes for different length putts is the stroke length. Longer putts require longer strokes and shorter putts require shorter strokes.

But the tempo does not change. Unfortunately, most everyday golfers alter their tempo to try and putts of various lengths. This is one of the most common reasons why so many golfers struggle on the greens.

What’s the solution?

Measure your tempo with one of two golf apps to finally understand the perfect tempo and practice until it becomes habitual.

Here’s how…

Tour Tempo Review

Download Tour Tempo

Tour Tempo is a great book (as is the sequel) but the app is even better. This is a paid app in the App store but has different voices and tones to help you understand both long and short game tempo. Inside the app it’s easy to set the tempo to different speeds while maintaining the proper tempo for long or short game.

  • After downloading the app select the short game tab and choose voice or tones.
  • Then, select your speed (ex. 14/7, 18/9, 22/11) as some golfers are slower or faster than others.
  • Finally, use it in practice to develop a more consistent putting tempo. Plus, don’t forget to use it with your full swing too.

Please note that there are different speeds but all have the same tempo (2-1). Here’s how they described this concept in the book, Tour Tempo 2.

“Good putting tempo is invariable. If your optimal stroke is 18/9, you should time out at .90 seconds from takeaway to impact on every one of your putts. It doesn’t matter if the putt is a four-footer or a cross-country lag putt. The tempo stays the same.”

Use a Metronome

While I’m a big fan of Tour Tempo , it’s not the cheapest app. If you want to save money, opt for using a free metronome app instead. If you’re like a lot of people you might be thinking, what is a metronome anyway?

According to Wikipedia,  “A metronome is a device that produces an audible click or other sound at a regular interval that can be set by the user, typically in beats per minute (BPM). Metronomes may include synchronized visual motion. Musicians use the device to practice playing to a regular pulse.”

While these devices were originally used for music, they’re also an underrated golf accessory. Plus you don’t need to buy a physical metronome anymore as there are free apps that do the same thing for you.

Here’s how to use it to master your putting…

  • Download a metronome app on your device.
  • Then, test out different beats per minute to find what works best for you.
  • Most players will benefit from BPM that is between 85-110 but don’t be afraid to experiment.
  • Keep hitting putts in practice to test out speed control and find the BPM that is right for you.
  • Make sure to save that number and use the app in the future when working through putting drills.

Check out our favorite putting drills  here .

Putting Tempo Drill

To make a metronome even more effective this is a good putting drill from JJ Putting on  YouTube . Here’s how to get started…

  • Download the metronome app if you haven’t already.
  • Place three tees in the ground in a straight line like a ladder – each tee is about two feet apart (or slightly less). The further you separate the tees the longer you will hit the putt.
  • Set your phone or table with the app in front of the middle tee and grab three golf balls.
  • Putt next to the middle tee and play the metronome app between 85-110.
  • With each beat you want to try and hit it each tee for proper timing. Focus on speed more than anything else and adjust as needed.

Most golfers will feel this is quite fast but as you can match the beat with the tees and you’ll get your speed dialed in no time. The goal isn’t to try and make putts with this drill, simply dial in your tempo. Recreate this feeling without a ball then with golf balls to create a cluster of balls in nearly the same place on the putting green.

Putting Tips

FAQs About Mastering Your Putting Stroke

Do you have more questions about putting, developing a consistent tempo, and dialing in your speed control? If so, check out some of the most commonly asked questions and answers.

What is a 2-1 putting ratio?

A two to one putting ratio is the ideal tempo for putting. This means the backstroke takes twice as long as the forward stroke. This is different from the full swing which is 3-1 and why it’s so important to measure your tempo.

Click here to learn more about long game tempo now.

What is the PGA Tour average putting tempo?

As mentioned in the YouTube video above, most professionals average 100 BPM on a metronome. This is why they are so good with distance control, make more putts (especially short putts) and have a wildly consistent putting stroke.

Is tempo important in putting?

Yes, tempo is important from tee to green in golf.

The incorrect tempo on the greens can lead to speed issues which will have a big impact on reading greens. While incorrect tempo on the driving range and course can cause all sorts of ball striking issues as well.

What should I set my metronome to for putting?

Using a metronome is a great way to improve your putting. Set it between 85-110 bpm to find what works best for you.

While there is a preferred tempo, there isn’t a perfect speed as all golfers are slightly different. Keep your smart phone on the green near the golf ball you’re hitting so you can test out different speeds.

Lag Putting

How hard should you hit a putt?

One of my oldest coaches always said that a putt that is short has 0% chance of going in. He’s not wrong either – but the problem is that some golfers take this advice too literally and try to bang every putt in the hole.

Here’s the thing, the harder you hit a putt, the more you shrink the hole.

This is why you want to try and make putts with a dying pace as the hole will catch it more often. If you hit it too hard you’ll get a lot of burned edges and lip outs. The proper speed if you do miss is to get the ball past the hole by 12–18 inches.

How do you hit consistent putts?

Hitting putts with consistency comes from the proper ball position when putting , finding a putter that is suited for you, a good pre-shot routine, and the right tempo. A tempo and rhythm you can repeat with your eyes closed is truly one of the most important parts.

Half the battle is finding the right putter so don’t skimp on that part of the equation. Click  here  to learn how to choose the right putter.

My Experience

Ever since I read the book Tour Tempo and the followup, Tour Tempo 2 it’s had a big impact on my game. The second book is all about short game tempo which I never knew was different from long game tempo. Speeding up my tempo from inside 60 yards and on the greens has helped my strikes and overall consistency.

Ever since I read the book and downloaded the app I’ve shared it with my friends and fellow golf buddies too. I can’t tell you how many times I’ll play with guys who have a slow tempo which leads to a jabby, non-fluid putting stroke. Using the app and/or a metronome can help you dial in your putting tempo for more consistency on the greens.

If you’re going through a putting slump, work on your tempo more than anything else. I promise it can have a big effect on gaining more confidence on the greens.

Final Thoughts

Putting is one of the most important parts of the game but oftentimes the least discussed. But when you start to master your flat stick, everything in your game can change. Plus, there’s nothing worse than hitting the ball well all day only to miss putts and end up 3 putting all day.

To hit consistent putts and hopefully have fewer per round make sure to:

  • Record your putting stroke regularly.
  • Work on your tempo consistently for a solid strike.
  • Spend a lot of time practicing putts inside five feet.
  • Develop a pre-shot putting routine to putt more consistently and perform under pressure.

I’m confident that when you develop a 2-1 tempo, your putting will improve faster than ever. Plus when you add in a metronome into your practice routine you’ll be more consistent than ever.

About the author

John novosel.

As an avid golfer and inventor, John Novosel studied films of the PGA greats, searching, along with countless others over the last century, for the key to what made certain golfers' swings so effortless, artful, and effective. Viewing the films, Novosel made a startling discovery. Nearly every champion demonstrated identical timing in their swings. An extensive review of archival footage of the greats throughout confirmed his findings. From Ben Hogan to Tiger Woods, whether the swings were fast or slow, the winning rhythm remained constant.

I'm sure many of you have tried this and some not liked it but this is my story and what has been happening over the last 3-4 weeks since I started using Tour Tempo. Please be nice and enjoy the read.

I had heard a lot about Tour Tempo and decided to read the book. I was really impressed with the data from in the book and the reviews I've read of the process so I decided to buy the phone app. For those who don't know, the whole premise of the book is that a large majority of tour players swing with a 3:1 ratio of backswing to downswing on full swing shots. In frames of video that ranges from 27 frames on the backswing to 9 frames on the downswing, or 27/9, to 24/8, 21/7 and 18/6 being the fastest. On short game shots, including putting, the ratio is 2:1 so 18/9, 16/8, etc. Also, in the book they describe that most amateurs swing too slow in their full swings and way too fast in the short game shots. I found this to be very interesting and was skeptical even with the abundance of data they provided about amateurs that they worked with. I would soon find out they were exactly right.

So I headed to the range with my ear buds and Tour Tempo phone app to try this out and boy was I all messed up. I set the app to the 27/9 tones and started hitting. I felt rushed, I felt confused, I felt all out of whack and I found it extremely hard to follow the swing tones in the app even on the slowest setting of 27/9. I got frustrated and took the earphones off and was pissed because I now totally threw everything off. I left and came back the next day and had the same results. I thought maybe this just wasn't for me.

The next day I decided to try the short game tones. I am very inconsistent with chipping and pitching so I went to the short game area at the course and started practicing with the tones. Now these I could follow because it made me realize that I was jabbing at the ball way too much and was WAY too quick with my chipping and putting swings. Slowing things down, staying with the 2:1 ratio and following the swing tones REALLY helped me. I was actually holing some chips and hitting them much more pure than I had in the past. I left there with a huge smile on my face and went back several times that week to continue to work on it and I feel more confident and more in control with my short game. I know it is a process but this gave me great improvement in a short period of time.

At this point I was even more frustrated about the long game tones and why I couldn't follow them so I decided to email the Tour Tempo guys through their website and just ask for some advice. They told me to send in video of my swing so they could analyze and provide some advice. I anxiously awaited a response. In the meantime I kept using the short game tones and continued to have success and had a few very solid rounds with no chunks or skulls in my short game. Then I received a response that my swing timing was 30/9, just above the highest Tour Tempo speed and that they thought the problem was that I was starting my swing after the first tone and not reacting to the tone well enough. They also stated that I should start with the 27/9 tones but try to get down to the 24/8 ratio and I would see 15-20 yards more on my driver, which I hit about 260-275 consistently. So, it was back to the range to test this out. I started to anticipate the tone better and really started to get in a flow with it. Normally my drives take a few hops and hit the net at the range I go to. That day when I started to groove the 27/9 tones I was hitting the net on a fly. A few drives actually made me laugh. I went to the range and just continued to use the tones with almost all my clubs and started to see great results. I think I needed to just give myself some time to get used to the tones instead of getting frustrated and also to start to anticipate the tones and the start of my swing instead of reacting to the tone and starting slow.

After several more range sessions with the tones I was really excited for the next round that I played. I knew I was going to hit the ball well. I had confidence in my new tempo and listened to the tones on the way to the course and during my warmups. I used my GPS to track some of my drives and I hit a few over 280 (284, 289). On the last hole the ranger was rushing us because they had a shotgun start after we completed 18. He told me to hit my drive and I said I was striking it well and wanted to wait for the guys in the fairway to walk a little further out. He scoffed at the idea and said we needed to move and I should hit. I was thinking about the tones, got into position and just unloaded. We all, including the ranger, started to scream "FOUR" and the guys in the fairway did the duck and cover. The ball flew over their heads by about 10-15 yards. I turned to the ranger and told him to go tell them he forced me to hit and he apologized and drove up and told them. I used the GPS to track it at 308 yards. HOLY #$%^!!!!

The past few times out at the range I started to feel as if the 27/9 tones were too slow so I started using the 24/8 tones and they felt great. It's amazing that when I first started using the tones I thought there was no way I could swing that fast but I got used to it. I might even try to get down to the 21/7 tones at some point. I am very interested to get on the trackman and see how much I've increased my swing speed.

I have other problems with my swing that I need to work on, swaying and being too handsy but I am hitting the ball straight and far right now, feel a lot better with my short game and will continue to practice and use these tones religiously when I practice.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to be more consistent. I can't say that I have this down or that I don't have problems with my swing but I feel I am playing better golf using this process and am excited to continue the process. If you got this far, thanks for reading!!!

Golf clap. Like you I tried this, got frustrated and said the heck with it. I'll have to revisit this little baby. Thanks for sharing. Good stuff. Did you make the birdie on 18 is what I want to know!?
Golf clap. Like you I tried this, got frustrated and said the heck with it. I'll have to revisit this little baby. Thanks for sharing. Good stuff. Did you make the birdie on 18 is what I want to know!?
Thanks for reading, I really appreciate it and good question. I hit a PW to about 15-18 feet. Putt got to the hole and actually rolled back an inch. I didn't hit it hard enough but there was also a little hump around the entire hole. Ended up shooting an 84. My putting was horrible, with 37 putts. Also, I've never had a ranger rush me like that. I was pissed.

I'm a relative beginner, and started using Tour Tempo after reading the book over the winter. I started right off with the 24/8 tones, which was actually much slower than my swing. No wonder my friends said I looked like I was trying to kill the ball! I'm not a long hitter by any means, but after a large bucket of a 6 iron just trying to ingrain that tempo, my average distance with that club went from 125 to 145-150. I haven't tried it with the driver yet, as that beast is nothing but a slice machine for me. Just trying to really ingrain the feel of the smooth tempo and transition, along with the 78 other swing thoughts I have from reading too many threads online.

Shot 80 today. Felt really good and it could have been better but I missed the green way too many times on shorter shots.

I agree with what you're saying. If you have a slow backswing like most amateurs, even the 27/9 seems impossible at first.

Have the app and deleted it off my phone from frustration. Reading this is making me want to re-download it and really give it a try. (more than 10 min) Thanks. Good luck with it.

I played really well for a while after reading Tour Tempo. The only problem is I would still get in modes where I hit my dreaded pulls or pull-draws. Other than that it allowed me to play some really good golf. Eventually I moved on to a more pivot driven swing (less conscious use of arms and hands). I still recommend Tour Tempo to people though. Great method. I don't think it is going to cure all swing flaws but get you more into swinging with a good, solid tempo without a lot of thoughts pre-swing which can sometimes throw you into fits of 20 swing thoughts. I find that the less I think and the more I concentrate on tempo, the better I seem to hit the ball.

I bought all the Tour Tempo stuff and was pretty disappointed. I started with short clubs and no ball for about a week or two before even trying it on the range. I did feel an immediate increase in clubhead speed however I felt this was due to shortening the backswing more than anything else. (Anticipating the tone made me shorten my swing), and that's what I credited the higher swing speed to. However I did not like how I was hitting the ball. So I gave up on it. I'm glad you had a good go with it. It's something I may try again, but to be fair, I haven't heard too many long term success stories with it. I have found most people are like me and gave it up. I bought the whole kit too... DVD's, ear device, book, etc. I'd love to find some real success with the device!

i like alot of tour tempo's stuff but have never really got down to applying it. i think there are generally on to something good. was watching horschell on weekend and seems like he has superfast tempo. i am skeptical of some of their analysis though. i would much rather have some software/service where your driving range swings can be analyzed for tempo as opposed to listening to tones.

Not something I use every day, but I do go to it frequently when I'm feeling off, particularly when I notice my transition getting a little too quick. As fast as the TT swing felt at first, now it really slows down my backswing to a comfortable pace. I've got the iphone total game app, and while i really don't use the short game part, I'm a fan of the product.

I'm a fan too. I've helped a lot if people speeding up their backswing. I use JC Video at my studio. It has a bunch if swings loaded. I will notice a slow deliberate backswing and ask someone to pick a favorite Tour player. 8/10 will pick Freddy. I'll put the Am and Freddy side by side and sync the beginning of the takeaway. In most cases, Freddy has hit the ball before the struggling Am has finished their backswing and they complain of being "quick." Quick is a 5:1 and not a 3:1.

I think there are two novel parts of the tour tempo app, (1) it creates a consistent tempo swing and (2) it takes you mind away from swing thoughts and instead focuses on a beat. (2) is probably the biggest gain as it helps clear your mind and lets your body do its thing.

I just thought they might have some advice. Also, if you haven't read the second book then you should. It's really great for short game tempo but also has a lot more information about the initial Tour Tempo including a lot of player research from the years after the initial book came out. Great stuff. For the Tiger lovers there is a whole chapter on one of his seasons and his tempo throughout and his performance in those tournaments.

When he was up 1-2 strokes with 3 holes left he said he thought only about tempo to avoid bad swings.

It might be the biggest break through I have made on my own.

Just an update. I had a few bad rounds recently and my swing felt all off, shot 90, 88, 94, 85 last weekend on a golf trip at some tough courses. I couldn't find the fairway off the tee. I practices a bunch with the tour tempo tones this past week. I shot an 81 this morning and my swing felt balanced and 'smooth' and I hit a bunch of fairways and if I missed it was by a few yards. Fun day!

  • 3 weeks later...

^ I'll add in an update as well. I had a decent period of hitting the ball, but got away from a solid tempo by trying out too many different things with the backswing and transition. As a result, I was hitting a lot of pulls and saw my average distance drop. While at the range last week, I started griping under my breath over some more bad pulls (and a few driver slices) and the golfer in the next bay chuckled and said that the range balls never did anything to me, there was no reason to try and kill them the way I was. I laughed it off, but went to my car and grabbed my iPod and headphones. Sure enough, playing the 24/8 tones made me quickly realize I was once again WAY TOO FAST with my transition and downswing. As soon as I slowed down to the tones, I was able to work my whole body, as the faster "kill the ball" swing was all arms which resulted in a lot of OTT swings. Just listening to the tempo tones allowed my to clear my mind and slow everything down, resulting in my downswing being more in sync and (you guessed it) more distance and tighter dispersion.

  1. Tour Tempo App

Tour Tempo is the best selling book and 5-star app that helps THOUSANDS of golfers improve their games by modeling the swing rhythm and tempo of tour players. In addition to Tour Tempo, I have patented or co-patented 4 golf training aids... I authored the book, Tour Tempo Force, which hit #1 on Apple for all sports.

  2. Tour Tempo

On the strength of this review I bought the Tour Tempo 2 book on iTunes and the app… Practicing putting in the hallway on the carpet with the tones as it suggests and my 8 year old son wants to 'play too'. Got him to concentrate on the tones and he was hitting 50% of his putts in the cup at 10 feet and his misses were close.

  3. Tour Tempo 2: The Short Game & Beyond

But Tour Tempo, now in its 11th printing, covered only the full-swing shots. Now Team Novosel and John Garrity are back with a sequel devoted to the short game -- the putts, chips, greenside pitches and bunker shots that make up the majority of strokes played in a round of golf. Tour Tempo 2 includes a download link to the new Tour Tempo short ...

  8. Tour Tempo Review: The Magic Ratio to Better Golf

Tour Tempo App Review. The Tour Tempo app is a paid app that costs $24.99 and there isn't a free version. But $25 is only the price of two sleeves of golf balls or a few golf gloves, which is a very low cost compared to the insane value it delivers. Plus, much cheaper than most training aids.

  10. Tour Tempo 2: The Short Game & Beyond

TPI's researchers concluded that "Tour Tempo is the only golf training aid that has been validated by an independent scientific study." In Tour Tempo 2, Novosel offers scientific proof that tour players putt, chip and blast from bunkers with a consistent 2 to-1 elapsed-time ratio of backswing to forward swing. Amateurs, however, display ...

  13. Tour Tempo Speed

The Tour Tempo Total Game app is absolutely the best $30 I have ever spent. I hit 200 balls on the range. PW through 5i has picked up at least 20 yards and my driver now back to ~250!!! 15. Tour Tempo 2: The Short Game & Beyond Review

Jeff Richmond. Before I start this review, I just want to say that I purchased this book on my Kindle. Not long after I finished reading this book I saw that they brought out a hard copy version of the book. I had previously read the original Tour Tempo book, and I found it very good. The idea of having a 3:1 tempo made a lot of sense, and they ...

  16. Putting Tempo: The Rhythm of Better Putting

Here's how they described this concept in the book, Tour Tempo 2. "Good putting tempo is invariable. If your optimal stroke is 18/9, you should time out at .90 seconds from takeaway to impact on every one of your putts. It doesn't matter if the putt is a four-footer or a cross-country lag putt.

  20. Tour Tempo

Total Rating 100%. Posted June 21, 2013. I think there are two novel parts of the tour tempo app, (1) it creates a consistent tempo swing and (2) it takes you mind away from swing thoughts and instead focuses on a beat. (2) is probably the biggest gain as it helps clear your mind and lets your body do its thing. Quote.
