“ Tell me the truth / Or tell me a lie / Tell me what I’ve gotta say to get out of this room alive

Show me the answers / Or give me a clue / There’s not enough space in the miles between me and you

Oh no / Here we go / Here come the saints of violence and innuendo

So tell me truth / Are you really surprised? / You live in a world where empathy goes to die” –

Lyrics from “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo”

“Planet Zero” ( PRESS HERE to watch the new music video) and “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo” introduce an album that sees Shinedown taking on the forces that keep us divided at a time when we need to be coming together. These songs warn of the dangerous dehumanizing consequences of cancel culture run rampant – if we shut each other down, we risk losing empathy, respect for one another, and our ability to communicate and unify in a way that leads to actual progress and understanding . Planet Zero is an incisive look at some of society’s most critical issues, including the increasingly toxic division among those of differing ideologies , the need for honesty in our public discourse , and the corrosive effects of social media and cancel culture on mental health and humanity . Part  social commentary  and part in-depth  exploration of the human psyche, there is also hope, triumph, and reminders that we all need one another. After all, it is the band’s impassioned striving for unity  that has long been at the heart of their creative output.

The high-concept, ultra-vivid, viscerally charged album was produced by Shinedown’s Eric Bass (who also produced the band’s 2018 acclaimed album ATTENTION ATTENTION ,)and recorded at  Bass’ newly built Big Animal Studio in South Carolina.

Shinedown also recently made their ATTENTION ATTENTION feature film available worldwide. A stunning visual counterpart to their 2018 acclaimed album of the same name, the film brings to life the album’s narrative about a mental health journey and the resolve of the human spirit, weaving together 14 songs into a provocative and thought-provoking cinematic story that illuminates yet another dimension of Shinedown’s limitless creativity.  PRESS HERE to watch the trailer. The film, directed by Bill Yukich (Beyoncé, Metallica, Wiz Khalifa) is now available to rent and purchase worldwide on Vimeo and is available on iTunes in select territories. It is also available on digital and cable VOD in the U.S. and Canada , and on Blu-ray and DVD – PRESS HERE to purchase and watch.

Over the last two decades, multi-platinum band Shinedown – Brent Smith [vocals], Zach Myers [guitar], Eric Bass [bass, production], and Barry Kerch [drums] – have cemented their status as one of the most vital and forward-thinking powerhouses in modern rock. Their most ambitious and masterfully realized work to date, their seventh studio album Planet Zero (Atlantic Records) firmly places the group in the pantheon of artists capable of moving the culture forward on the strength of their singular vision, uncompromising honesty, and fierce commitment to constant evolution.

A high-concept, ultravivid saga that is part social commentary and part in-depth exploration of the human psyche, Planet Zero, produced by Bass, offers an incisive look at a strange and terrifying moment in human history and its implications for the future. Featuring Shinedown’s combustible yet artfully crafted sound and urgent lyrics, lead single “Planet Zero” rings the alarm on Shinedown’s dystopian warning regarding the issues at hand: cancel culture run rampant, the corrosive effects of social media, and the increasingly toxic division among those of differing ideologies. While a raw ferocity fuels much of Planet Zero, there is also vulnerability, hope, and reminders that we all need one another. After all, it is the band’s impassioned striving for unity that deeply informed the making of Planet Zero. Not only a driving force for their songwriting, their humanitarian outlook led them to be one of the first artists to fundraise for non-profit humanitarian organization Direct Relief in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, raising more than $400,000.

Shinedown will soon embark on a world tour in support of Planet Zero beginning January 26th alongside the release of single “Planet Zero” and the album announcement, with their biggest stage show yet propelled by the undeniable power of front man Brent Smith’s voice.

CONCERT REVIEW: SHINEDOWN’s Planet Zero Tour Brings the Musical Heat to Mainsfield’s Rainy Tuesday Night (September 13th, 2022)

shinedown planet zero world tour

This past Tuesday night the Planet Zero World Tour rolled into the Massachusetts’s Xfinity Center on a very humid, on and off rainy night but that didn’t stop the fans from showing up to tailgate in the parking lot a few hours before the doors opened. Games were being played, grills were smoking, and friends were being made getting ready to rock out while waiting. Hosting this tour was the one and only Shinedown . They brought some Tennessee boys out on the road with them to kick off this leg of the tour for some long exciting nights.

Opening up the night was John Harvie , an upcoming rock and roll artist with a hint of punk. During the pandemic he decided to take the music thing seriously and being asked to tour with one of the biggest names in rock and roll, he definitely made the right choice. Coming out on stage in a leather coat and pants was a bold move considering how hot it was in the crowd, let alone the stage! He actually made a comment about how it was not the right choice. The band behind him was energetic as each song was too. The seats weren’t full just yet, but he had some fun crowd interactions with getting hands up and waving side to side. Normally I would name off the band but it seems like he is more of a solo artist with backing musicians since I can’t find anything about them. With this tour he is supporting his new album that just dropped a few months back called “Told ya.” I have listened to it a few times and it’s a solid album. All in all, J ohn Harvie was a great half an hour act to open up this show.

The 90,900 capacity venue started to fill in more while the second act was getting ready to hit the stage. That being the rugged Tennessee king of music right now, Jelly Roll . Personally, I have been a huge fan since I discovered him listening to a rap playlist. Yes, a rap playlist. He has taken some hard moments in his life and has created music for a few genres connecting with so many people such as rap, rock, and now country, connecting the genres and making some amazing music. He entered the stage with a massive smile on his face and his amazing band ready to entertain us. As he introduced his band you knew it was a family.

Two badass guitarists, a rippin’ bass player, a fun jammin drummer, along with a DJ and a synth player. While introducing the band they played a mashup of music with songs rolling into one another, like ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, ‘99 Problems’ ,which by the way Zach Myers joined him to rap, and ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’ . Again, showing how clearly all sorts of music has shaped his style. Jelly Roll told the crowd he didn’t expect MA to show up for them, but the echoing of everyone signing the songs proved otherwise. People held up signs saying how his music saved their life, which he called out on stage to say he would be signing all of them which was really neat since I’ve only heard how humble this man is. Constantly pointing to fans, making eye contact, and signing along with them.

Usually photographers only get to shoot the first three songs, however, he allowed us to do what we love to do for his whole set! Again proving how humble he really must be. The stage presence was on fire. Literally, fire. Pyros popped off in almost every song at the right times when the bass drop would hit or the drummer ( Cody Ash ) would stand up to come down to smash on the toms, and all the sudden my face was melting. It was a great experience. “We came here together as a family” he said and you can just truly believe he meant it as we all felt it. Highly suggest you either check out his music or don’t miss a live show if it rolls through your town.

AT this point the arena was looking packaed, even though it was a “school night” and the weather wasn’t ideal. The twenty one year experienced band, Shinedown was about to take the stage. Not without a half hour stage set up taking place beforehand. Two massive screens stood on stage as the place went dark. It showed a montage from the tour and then into them presenting the album they are promoting on this tour, “Planet Zero” . The two massive screens then opened as the four members came out in a line to greet the screaming crowd. They then walked to their instruments and the show began.

Playing a variety of hits all night, from old to new, new to old, this polished band knows how to put on a show. An actual act. The band is a maestro and we were the orchestra. After the first two songs, they all bowed and lead singer Brent Smith said: “Welcome to our show”. Each member was charismatic, commanding the stage they stood on. They paid tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins at the end of a song playing a quick 15 seconds of “Hero” as Brent kissed up to the sky, which I thought was a class act, and they truly are.

Shinedown is represented by power house lead singer Brent Smith , well-known guitarist Zach Myers , bassist Eric Bass , and drummer Barry Kerch . As I said before they know how to put on a show: at some point Eric Bass told the audience that he wanted to bring a baby grand piano to Mansfield but it had to be suspended above the stage and it had to light up as he played it, well the hard working road crew made it happen, it was something I have never seen done before. Along with the massive light equipment that moved during every song to the band’s performance plus insane pyro and fireworks going off. It was an experience to say the least.

Watching friends, couples, and families sing to one another with huge smiles across their faces, you could feel love in the air. “What do you think the meaning of life is MA, it’s a very bold question but I ask you,” calling us a home to the band, “ Well in our opinion it’s to live it. Every single day.” said Brent Smith . He made all of us feel that on Tuesday night. After having our minds blown and our hearts filled with happiness with music, Shinedown brought out Jelly Roll to the stage to have him and the entire crowd sing ‘Simple Man’. Seeing thousands of cell phones lights light up the venue, this night ended tremendously. I could write about this performance for another page honestly, it was amazing. I never want to miss a Shinedown show again seeing this two hour performance.

The Planet Zero World Tour has been taking over cities the last few months from the UK to the US and they are not stopping til the end of the year. If you can get out to this tour, please do it. You will absolutely regret missing one of this shows.

Shinedown

Early during the pandemic, Shinedown ‘s Eric Bass began referring to the United States as “planet zero.”

“That was my nickname for it,” Bass, joined by frontman Brent Smith, tells Billboard via Zoom. “It seemed like there was zero intelligence, zero tolerance for anybody’s opinion, zero accountability for anything. We kinda looked at each other and were like, ‘Let’s write a song about what’s going on on planet zero.'”

Today (Jan. 26), Shinedown releases that song and accompanying lyric video, with a West Coast tour kicking off tonight in San Francisco. The stomping heavy rock track gave context and focus for an entire album, also called Planet Zero , that’s coming out April 22 on Atlantic Records ( pre-order here ). Bass produced the 13-song set, as he did with its predecessor, 2018’s Attention Attention , helming a high-concept treatise on societal affairs during the past 22 months, including the travails of living through a pandemic, the pitfalls of social media, mental health issues, political divisiveness, partisan media and cancel culture.

See latest videos, charts and news

“There’s a lot to unpack with the record,” Smith explains, “but ultimately this is a record about pulling the curtain back. When we started writing it was like, ‘Do we do the crystal ball method…try to write about three years from now, ’cause it’s not always gonna be like this? It’s gonna get better.’ And ultimately what happened was things just were not getting better and things were getting even more divisive. We’ve always been an honest band, so it was impossible not to write about what we saw going on…these narratives that are being pushed and are just dividing us. We feel like it’s really dangerous.”

Slipknot Announces 2024 North American Summer Tour

Bass adds that Planet Zero and its title track are “a glimpse into the future if we continue with the way we’re treating each other. This record is a warning, in a lot of ways, to everyone. It’s not a record for the right, it’s not a record for the left…for Black, white, Asian, Hispanic. It’s a record for all of us. There are a lot of really inspiring songs, a lot of songs with a lot of humanity in them, but it’s a glimpse into a potential future and it’s a warning that if we don’t start to view everything through a human lens…we could be headed for a really, really bad place.”

Trending on Billboard

Shinedown — which also includes guitarist Zach Myers and drummer Barry Kerch — recorded Planet Zero throughout the pandemic, mostly in Bass’ newly built Big Animal Studio in his home base of South Carolina. It employs interludes from a dystopian, A.I.-like character named Cyren as a narrator to guide listeners through the set and knit the themes together as the group roars through tracks such as “No Sleep Tonight,” “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo,” “America Burning” and “A Symptom of Being Human.”

The bar is set high, of course. Planet Zero ‘s six predecessors have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and all gone gold or better — double platinum in the case of 2008’s The Sound of Madness. Its past four releases have debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, and Shinedown has the most No. 1s on Billboard ‘s Mainstream Rock Songs chart with 16 chart-topping singles, the most of any act in the chart’s 40-year history. Attention Attention, meanwhile, was accompanied by a companion film , directed by Bill Yukich, visualizing the album’s exploration of mental health issues.

“I do like to get uncomfortable,” explains Bass, who also engineered and mixed the album. “I always want to hear something different, sonically. I have to have a goal on every record. I like to have an endpoint I’m trying to meet. If I achieve it, who knows, but I’m always looking for something different.” Smith elaborates that Bass “didn’t want to do what he calls ‘band in a can,'” which led to some different sonic approaches on Planet Zero, whether it was a “dry” presentation of the vocals or a distinct lack of reverb throughout the album.

“We’re known for making these big, cinematic records,” Smith notes. “This time around we pushed everything to the front for the listeners, not layering so many things or having a lot of effects or cues or things of that nature. Instead of taking a guitar track and stick it, like, 12 times to make it bigger, it was more like finding a great sound and turning the amp up as loud as it can go. It changes the sound of the record. It makes it meaner, raw.”

Getting to that point was not easy, however — especially for Bass, who Smith says “did not sleep for a year” during the process.

“This one tried to kill me a couple of times,” Bass acknowledges. “There was a lot of self-doubt, a lot of wondering if I should mix it or not, that type of thing. I had a lot of disdain for it the whole time I was making it. But in the end I think that’s what gives it its edge. There’s a lot of my anger about this record in the record. I’m not mad at it now. I’m really proud of it, but in a very real way this record was made with a lot of blood, sweat and tears.”

Shinedown will be filming a music video for “Planet Zero” later this week in Los Angeles with director Charles De Meyer, who’s also on board to helm a video for another track. The group is planning what Smith calls “probably the most ambitious marketing campaign we’ve ever put together for a record,” and Bass adds that there’s some discussion about bringing the Cyren character to life in some manner. Shinedown is also looking at a full year of touring, with dates currently announced through early August in North America and Europe — where the quartet will play festivals and open two shows for Iron Maiden.

Shinedown did play dates during 2021, while Smith and Myers toured as a duo last year and in 2020 to promote a pair of EPs. But the full quartet is more than ready for its global return.

“Everybody’s excited as hell about these (upcoming) shows,” Smith says. “We know how to tour, even in the midst of Covid. It’s a little different, yeah, but what doesn’t change is the energy and what you’re there for to do for people. I’m always terrified before I go on stage, and I would worry if I wasn’t nervous ’cause that lets me know I’m alive. But once you step foot on the stage, the mechanism takes over and the muscle memory ignites. We’re just ready to go, man.”

Ahead of the April 22 release of their new album Planet Zero, multi-platinum band Shinedown have announced the Planet Zero World Tour (produced by Live Nation), with special guests Jelly Roll and John Harvie, and have also released "The Saints of Violence and Innuendo," a brand-new song from the forthcoming album.

The Planet Zero World Tour begins in Bonner Springs, KS on September 3, kicking off a 20-date U.S. run of fall shows that will see the record-breaking, chart-topping band bring their new music, #1 hits, fan favorites and biggest stage show yet to cities from coast to coast in support of Planet Zero. Tickets are available today at 10am local time here .

This leg of the Planet Zero World Tour also includes festival performances at Louder Than Life on September 23 in Louisville, KY and Aftershock on October 9 in Sacramento, CA. Full routing below, including The Revolution's Live Tour kicking off April 1 with special guests The Pretty Reckless and DIAMANTE, followed by UK/Europe festival sets and select shows with Iron Maiden in June and Canadian dates with special guests Pop Evil and Ayron Jones in July and August. For tickets and all show details, please visit here .

While lead single "Planet Zero" - Shinedown's record-breaking 18th #1 - remains in the top spot at Active Rock Radio for the fourth consecutive week, the band has released album track "The Saints of Violence and Innuendo." The frenetic yet massively catchy track takes on the platforms and institutions that don't value honesty and instead use half-truths, false narratives and innuendo to push agendas that are often not reflective of the people's best interest.

"Planet Zero" and "The Saints of Violence and Innuendo" introduce an album that sees Shinedown taking on the forces that keep us divided at a time when we need to be coming together. These songs warn of the dangerous dehumanizing consequences of cancel culture run rampant - if we shut each other down, we risk losing empathy, respect for one another, and our ability to communicate and unify in a way that leads to actual progress and understanding.

Planet Zero is an incisive look at some of society's most critical issues, including the increasingly toxic division among those of differing ideologies, the need for honesty in our public discourse, and the corrosive effects of social media and cancel culture on mental health and humanity. Part social commentary and part in-depth exploration of the human psyche, there is also hope, triumph, and reminders that we all need one another. After all, it is the band's impassioned striving for unity that has long been at the heart of their creative output.

The high-concept, ultra-vivid, viscerally charged album was produced by Shinedown's Eric Bass (who also produced the band's 2018 acclaimed album ATTENTION ATTENTION,) and recorded at Bass' newly built Big Animal Studio in South Carolina.

Shinedown also recently made their ATTENTION ATTENTION feature film available worldwide. A stunning visual counterpart to their 2018 acclaimed album of the same name, the film brings to life the album's narrative about a mental health journey and the resolve of the human spirit, weaving together 14 songs into a provocative and thought-provoking cinematic story  that  illuminates  yet another dimension of Shinedown's limitless creativity.

Shinedown Brought Their Planet Zero World Tour to Bridgeport Connecticut’s Total Mortgage Arena on April 7, 2023

  • April 9, 2023
  • International Concert Reviews
  • by Jody Wilk Photographer/Writer

Bridgeport rocked out with Shinedown , to a full house, at The Total Mortgage Arena . Upon arriving, I could feel the excitement of the fans that were lined up in front of the arena, almost all the way to the parking lot. Lots of people already had Shinedown shirts on, many newly purchased as they had a merch booth set up outside. Shinedown is on their Planet Zero World Tour with From Ashes to New and Three Days Grace opening the night.

From Ashes to New was the youngest band on the bill having formed in 2013, and releasing their first album, Day One , in 2016. Their most recent release of the Blackout album, “Hate Me Too” was recently tied for #1 on active rock radio. The stage was dimly lit with saturated red lights and smoke. Danny Case commanded the front of the stage while singing “Nightmare,” the first release off Blackout . He was donning what appeared to be a bullet proof vest with the band’s logo on it and matching Fabric of The Universe cargo pants. He was at the front of the catwalk along with rhythm guitarist, Matt Brandyberry who keept the audience’s attention while belting out the vocals on their most popular songs along with the latest releases. When lead guitarist, Lance Dowdle came to the front of the catwalk, he was wearing a creepy half mask with devil-like teeth clenching a knife. I wished they did the cover of The Hu’s “Yuve Yuve Yu” that they released in 2019, but not on this night. Mat Madrio was perched high on a riser at the back of the stage surrounded by his drums and video screens. During the song “Hate Me,” the screens were displaying “I Wish I Hated You,” and “You Should Hate Me Too”. These guys cranked through a short seven-song set, leaving the crowd wanting more!

Three Days Grace was next to take the stage as the crowd was already packed in. They have won many awards over the years, but most recently “So Called Life,” which is what they opened their set with,  from their most recent album, Explosions. The song was nominated for MTV music video award for best rock video in 2022, and this year at the iHeart Music Awards was nominated for song of the year.

The stage backlit with red lights and hearts that looked like they were on fire! Looking down the catwalk, the red lights reflected off of it as Matt proceeded down toward the front until white lights illuminated the entire stage.  The second song, “I Am Machine,” off the album Human , Matt Walst’s first album with the band released in 2015. The audience was standing throughout the show, some moshing, most with their hands in the air, and everyone singing along to “I Hate Everything About You”. I was trying to figure out what the structure was next to the guitarist. Was it a combination C02 cannon, or just an excessive pick holder. I am guessing latter, as nothing ever came out of it.  They rocked their way through a 45-minute set. During the next to last song, “Never Too Late,” the crowd had their cellphone lights lit up and waving back and forth. Matt got the crowd on their feet chanting “Riot, Riot”, they ended a killer set with the song “Riot”.

The house was packed to the brims as Shinedown came walking down the catwalk on a dark smoky stage with huge Planet Zero logos illuminated in blue and purple. It reminding me of Close Encounters of the Third. This was the third stop on this tour and their first time ever playing in Bridgeport, Connecticut. I was in great anticipation of this, as this was my first Shinedown concert, and they certainly delivered a performance for all the senses. Performing their hits spanning their 22-year career, from hard-rockin’ tunes to a stripped-down acoustic duet.

Starting the set with 2008’s “Diamond Eyes” with the entire crowd on its feet, you could tell this was going to be one killer show. Flames billowing through the stage, air bursts, and concussion flashes stimulated and added to the explosive performance, which made for a sensory overload. They followed this up with the recent single “Dead Don’t Die” which you can watch below.

Suddenly a piano descended from the ceiling outlined in LED lights at the front of the catwalk. This was for the song “I’ll Follow You” in which Eric Bass plays the piano. It was a sight to see looking up from the photo pit when Zach Meyers hopped up on top of the piano to do his part.

There was a pretty good mosh pit going on the right side of the stage up until they played “A Symptom of Being Human.” At this point, everyone in the mosh pit put their arms on the shoulders of their neighbors and were rocking side to side enjoying the unity of the music bringing them together.

The music picked back up quickly with more flames blowing up through the stage, airbursts, and concussion explosions as the band played “Sound of Madness”. The entire arena smelled like a full-on fireworks festival. The crowd singing along to “Second Chance” and “45” was almost deafening. During their acoustic duet of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” the crowd was singing the chorus by themselves, and I think every single person was participating.

Picking it back up and ending the night on a high note, they performed “Monsters” and “Cut the Cord” with more flames and pyro. The band was told Bridgeport would be the loudest crowd on the tour and Brent was making them live up to it by taunting them to get louder and louder. He commented that it was so packed “that you couldn’t fit a damn fart in this place!”.

If you want to experience this sensory overload of a show by Shinedown, on their the Planet Zero World Tour, you can catch them at a major city near you from now through September.

Shinedown tickets, xfinity center | mansfield, massachusetts.

This fall, record-breaking American rock band Shinedown, brings The Planet Zero World Tour to Massachusetts! The 20-city trek will have the band and special guests Jelly Roll and John Harvie traverse across the U.S. and Canada, making a stop at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield on Tuesday 13th September 2022! Shinedown, who currently holds the record for most number 1 hits on the Mainstream Rock Charts, are anticipated to perform songs from their latest album, Planet Zero. Moreover, fans can also expect the Floridian band to perform hits and fan favorites from their previous albums. Grab your tickets now to this exciting rock concert before it’s too late!

Shinedown’s latest and much-anticipated album, Planet Zero, will drop this spring. Planet Zero is the band’s seventh studio album and the second to be recorded, produced, and mixed by Shinedown’s bassist Eric Bass. Planet Zero was written and recorded during the pandemic lockdown, which for the band conveniently took place in Bass’ new recording studio in Charleston, South Carolina.

Shinedown’s frontman Brent Smith described Planet Zero’s sound to be more stripped-down compared to their previous albums. The singer also mentioned that the album’s lyrical content might be controversial for some as they tackled sensitive subjects such as politics, beliefs, social and mental issues. During an interview with Grammy.com, Smith expressed that Planet Zero’s lyrical content is anecdotal. "It's the reflection of what you just went through." He continued that Planet Zero is much like a twenty-song storyteller. "We're really talking to those forces that divide us — forces in government, forces in media, forces in Big Tech," he adds. "We're saying, 'Is this what you wanted? For us to be at each other's throats?’”

Planet Zero is anticipated to perform well in the charts, much like its predecessor, Attention Attention. The sixth record was also produced and mixed by Bass in his studio. The highly-regarded sixth album performed impressively on the Billboard charts – peaking at number 1 on the Top Rock Albums, Top Alternative Albums, and Top Hard Rock Albums charts and number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. Attention Attention was later certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Shinedown announces planet zero world tour, releases new song.

Posted by Buddy Iahn | Mar 25, 2022

Album drops Apr 22nd

Ahead of the April 22nd release of their new album Planet Zero , multi-platinum band Shinedown has announced the Planet Zero World Tour, produced by Live Nation, with special guests Jelly Roll and John Harvie, and have also released “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo,” a new song from the forthcoming album.

The Planet Zero World Tour begins in Bonner Springs, KS on September 3rd, kicking off a 20-date US run of fall shows that will see the record-breaking, chart-topping band bring their new music, No. 1 hits, fan favorites and biggest stage show yet to cities from coast to coast in support of Planet Zero . This leg of the Planet Zero World Tour also includes festival performances at Louder Than Life on September 23rd in Louisville, KY and Aftershock on October 9th in Sacramento, CA. Shows include The Revolution’s Live Tour kicking off April 1st with special guests The Pretty Reckless and Diamante, followed by UK and Europe festival sets and select shows with Iron Maiden in June and Canadian dates with special guests Pop Evil and Ayron Jones in July and August.

Tickets are available now via Ticketmaster .

While lead single “Planet Zero” – Shinedown’s record-breaking 18th No. 1 – remains in the top spot at Active Rock Radio for the fourth consecutive week, the band has released album track “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo.” The frenetic yet massively catchy track takes on the platforms and institutions that don’t value honesty and instead use half-truths, false narratives and innuendo to push agendas that are often not reflective of the people’s best interest.

“Planet Zero” and “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo” introduce an album that sees Shinedown taking on the forces that keep us divided at a time when we need to be coming together. These songs warn of the dangerous dehumanizing consequences of cancel culture run rampant-if we shut each other down, we risk losing empathy, respect for one another, and our ability to communicate and unify in a way that leads to actual progress and understanding. Planet Zero is an incisive look at some of society’s most critical issues, including the increasingly toxic division among those of differing ideologies, the need for honesty in our public discourse, and the corrosive effects of social media and cancel culture on mental health and humanity. Part social commentary and part in-depth exploration of the human psyche, there is also hope, triumph, and reminders that we all need one another. After all, it is the band’s impassioned striving for unity that has long been at the heart of their creative output.

Multi-platinum, chart-topping rock band Shinedown just wrapped up its Planet Zero World Tour, that was in support of its seventh studio album of the same name. Shinedown has announced their upcoming fall The Revolutions Live Tour, prior to which they will play a round of smaller venues and festivals this summer. Having been with the band for the past five years, Production and Lighting Designer, Mitchell Schellenger, Principal Designer of Denver, CO-based Station Six, provided them with a radical new design with a massive thrust for this tour. Lighting Director, Carter Fulghum, who has been with Shinedown for 11 years, is back as the Lighting Director. PLSN spoke with both Schellenger and Fulghum about the design and gear choices that support Shinedown on the road.

Mitchell Schellenger,

Production & Lighting Designer

Schellenger started working with Shinedown in 2018/19 on their Attention, Attention tour. “I was brought in to do lighting programming, and that evolved into some screens direction and other things,” recalls the designer. “The band invited me back for this new album cycle to do full production and lighting design, along with a bit of creative direction. Zach Myers, the guitarist, wears the creative director’s hat with this band, so he and I collaborated quite a bit to put this new show together. We’re quite pleased with how it turned out.”

Schellenger tells us about the aesthetic they were going for on the Planet Zero tour. “It had a very kind of futuristic feel to it,” he describess. “It was a concept album, so it had these pillars throughout. The music itself, there was this siren voice, basically this kind of futuristic woman that would speak throughout the album. So, we wanted to play off that futuristic, almost spacey vibe and aesthetic, but we didn’t want to overdo it. I didn’t want it to feel like in-your-face outer space thing, nothing like that, instead we wanted to have a modern, futuristic feel to it.”

It was important to Schellenger to create something that, no matter where the audience was in the venue, they felt close and part of the show. “That’s where the choice to use this ridiculously long thrust came into play,” laughs Schellenger. “The band performs the entire show on the thrust, which is cool, because basically anybody on the floor is right there at the barricade and very close, and if you’re in the bowl, you still don’t have a bad seat.”

In keeping with the futuristic, space aesthetic, clean lines came into play. Schellenger has always been a fan of having the show look really clean at times. “I always say, ‘It’s easier for me to make a clean stage look messy than a messy stage look clean.’ There are a lot of very linear components, and the whole system is automated so that we can suck everything up to the grid. There’s really no height variation to the stage. We can make it look sterile at times. The lighting is all high, and really flat. The stage is very flat. There’s nothing on the stage. We’ve hidden all the floor lights underneath the grated deck so that the light beams pop through the decking, but you don’t see the actual fixture. To keep the show dynamic, we build various looks both structurally, as well as with the lighting devices, so we can keep it continuously moving into a new look and vibe; heavy songs can be gnarly looking.”

With Cybermotion automation, they can rake all the trusses so that there’s really no sense of what’s going on. And then, to contrast that, “we can put everything in a really clean, simple look with a simple lighting focus, and it looks like a completely different show,” explains Schellenger. “I think that that clean look, that can evolve into something messy using the Cybermotion system, that we have on everything, allowed us to progress the show in a dynamic fashion.”

The lighting equipment was supplied by Bandit Lites, a longtime vendor for Shinedown. Bandit’s Brent Barrett was the Account Executive who supported this tour. “Shinedown is the first time I’ve personally—apart from festivals—worked with Bandit on a show of this size,” Schellenger says. “It was great. They’re really great people, and the gear is really good.” Schellenger noted some key gear choices that supported the versatility in his design. “The first thing I always choose is the control, especially since I programmed this show myself. I don’t program a lot of my shows these days, but this one, I thoroughly enjoyed programming. The music’s fun to program to, and the band is really great to work with. When I’m wearing the programmer hat, I always choose MA. Then, for my lighting choices, I really wanted a whole clean look, clean lines, and a quantity of fixtures. I’d rather take 100 of something than 12 of this, 16 of that, or whatever. I reached out to Bandit to see what they had. We used the Ayrton Khamsin as our workhorse. Every single truss has Khamsin. The floor has Khamsin on it. There’re no wash lights, per se. I’ve always been a fan of these new profile fixtures that they can zoom so wide, they’re still punchy in a saturated color, and they can serve as a wash when needed.”

For the strobes, they went with GLP JDC1s, since they “do what they need to; nice and punchy, and look great,” says Schellenger. For remote followspots, they’re using Robe’s RoboSpot system with BMFLs. Each band number has two, so there’s eight total. There is a rear spot and a high side light for each band member. “We chose not to pair them to speed up load-in,” says Schellenger. “They, like every rock band, don’t want any front light. However, the audience obviously wants to see them, so my favorite trick is to take an eight-foot stick of [Tyler] GT [truss], hang it high, one per side with a couple of lights, to serve as a key light. It’s steep, moody front light, and you don’t get that big ‘pop star circle’ from a traditional FOH followspot. Plus, like all of us, we love the ability to black out eight spots simultaneously and have them snap between color and strobe. So, the RoboSpot system, from a key light standpoint, is the perfect choice.”

Under the stage, they have a grid of Claypaky Mythos to shoot up through the grated stage deck. The reason for that fixture choice was, “Bandit had the quantity that we were going for, it’s punchy, but still has a small form factor,” Schellenger comments. “Since they were under the deck in inverted Tyler GT truss, we wanted something that could move, get really tight, or be fairly washy at times, and be comfortable for the crew to deal with in that fairly tight space.” He wanted a linear light to line the trusses so Bandit hooked him up with “the sexiest light on this tour, the Elation Seven Batten,” he states. “I wanted something to draw attention to the automation movements. We took a bunch of those out and they are stunning.”

Schellenger is very pleased to be working with Carter Fulghum as the Lighting Director for the tour and would love to work with him lots more. “Carter is awesome. I wish I could use Carter for every show I ever do!” enthuses Schellenger. “I mean no disrespect to the other people I have on tour. I love to surround myself with great people. I think the team really makes the show. You can have all the gear in the world, but if you don’t have the right people, what’s the point? Carter is certainly no exception to that. He’s such a go-getter. He’s one of the hardest working lighting directors I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. He’s perfect for the role and he’s perfect for this band, too. He really respects the musicians. He gets them everything they need. If they ask for a change, it’s done. And he’s just such a pleasant human, too. I love doing the late nights in the arena with Carter because he is just such a great dude to be around. Again, I would steal Carter and use him for all sorts of stuff if he wasn’t such a loyal Shinedown Bandit Lites guy.”

Schellenger similarly feels that Shinedown is one of his favorite bands to work with. “They are the most humble human beings on the face of the planet,” he says. “I would drop everything to go work on a Shinedown show, just because they are truly the most sincere, pleasant human beings I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to work with them. I think we all collaborated very well together. In addition to the band, their whole team, [PM] Charlie Terrell’s great; everybody involved from the top down, it is a great camp. I always joked, ‘If I was still touring, I’d be jealous of Carter because this would be a fun one to go on the road with.’”

Carter Fulghum,

Lighting Director

Fulghum has been with Shinedown for over a decade, and he takes care of maintaining the lighting design on the road as well as responding to changes and requests from the band. He feels that this design is easy to maintain. “It’s really about the trusses and automation. You just have to get the grid in the right spot and then all the truss moves work properly. You have to stay on top of where the points end up in the mornings and make sure that all of that’s working out right, and then try to cut off any potential problems depending upon the room. Dealing with scoreboards is usually a lot of fun.”

Fulghum and Schellenger planned out dealing with the automation during programming so there wouldn’t need to be a lot of updating of focuses. Fulghum says, “We made it so the specials are only happening in certain spots during the show, and during that time, the rig is in home position—as high as it goes, so, I have to update the home positions. The rest of the positions are all fans, just straight out, doing a lot of aerial type effects.”

Fulghum likes the fixtures that were chosen for this tour, especially the Khamsins. “I can’t say enough good things about the Khamsins, those LED spots are just amazing,” the LD says. “They’re incredibly bright, and they’re very, very good at what they do. They held up well, especially because there’s a lot of pyro in this show, so there’s a lot of dust being thrown everywhere. The Mythos running under the stage held up well too. The Mythos and BMFLs are the only arc sources in the rig, but the LED Khamsins held up against the Mythos and were brighter, in my opinion.”

Like Schellenger, Fulgham enjoyed working together on this tour. “He was great, and he’s been very helpful with making sure that we didn’t have anything that would need to be updated which was critical to the show;  nothing that would cause problems with the trusses moving. He didn’t just go, ‘okay, well we need a special here, now we need to move it into this position and do specials here.’ None of that ended up happening, which helped with the day like crazy. He gives great advice that is very helpful with everything.”

The Lighting Director was very happy with Bandit Lites’ support for the tour. “They’ve been doing a great job keeping everything updated,” says Fulghum. “With most of the lights we haven’t had any problems, but whenever we did have problems, they were sending out new parts, or whatever we needed. Bandit, as always, did a great job of giving us any support we needed. Both Matt King, the Project Manager, and Brent Barrett, the Client Rep, have done a wonderful job with staying on top of everything and making sure that everything was coordinated properly.”

Like Schellenger, the LD really likes working with Shinedown. “The guys are great, they’re a wonderful band to work for, very appreciative,” says Fulghum. “I remember when I got hired on the first tour, and Brent Smith, the lead singer called me directly to welcome me to the tour, before I’d ever even got out the door! I’d never had that happen before. As soon as I walked into the first rehearsal, the rest of the guys, were right there saying, ‘hey, how you doing? Nice to meet you. Great to work with you’. They’ve been like that ever since. Zach is very creative and watches a lot of other bands, and other things. He sees a lot of things that happen and is very much in the middle of all of it.”

SHINEDOWN 's seventh studio album, will be released on April 22 via Atlantic Records .

On "Planet Zero" , SHINEDOWN is serving up an incisive look at some of society’s most critical issues, including the increasingly toxic division among those of differing ideologies, the need for honesty in our public discourse, and the corrosive effects of social media and cancel culture on mental health and humanity. The "Planet Zero" single rings the alarm with a cautionary warning that if we shut each other down, we risk losing empathy, respect for one another, and our ability to communicate and unify in a way that leads to actual progress and understanding.

Over the last two decades, SHINEDOWN has cemented its status as one of the most vital and forward-thinking powerhouses in modern rock. Their most ambitious and masterfully realized work to date, "Planet Zero" is a high-concept, ultra-vivid, viscerally charged saga. A critical yet optimistic look at the fractures and frays of a society that has undergone many challenges in recent years, the album is part social commentary and part in-depth exploration of the human psyche.

Produced by SHINEDOWN 's own Eric Bass (who also helmed the band's 2018 album, "Attention Attention" ),and recorded at Bass 's newly built Big Animal Studio in South Carolina, "Planet Zero" matches its immersive world-building and takedown of authoritarianism with a deliberately unvarnished sound. The album is spliced with interludes featuring Cyren , an insidious and unsettling robot character that appears throughout the "Planet Zero" journey. While a raw ferocity fuels much of "Planet Zero" on tracks like "The Saints Of Violence" and "Innuendo" , "No Sleep Tonight" , and "America Burning" , there is also hope, triumph, and reminders that we all need one another on songs like "Daylight" , "Dysfunctional You" , and "A Symptom Of Being Human" . After all, it is the band’s impassioned drive for unity that has long been at the heart of their creative output and deeply informed the making of "Planet Zero" .

SHINEDOWN will kick off "The Revolution's Live" tour beginning April 1, propelled by the undeniable power of Smith 's voice and their biggest stage production yet. Following this April and May run with special guests THE PRETTY RECKLESS and DIAMANTE , SHINEDOWN will head to Daytona Beach for Welcome To Rockville 2022 where they'll headline Saturday, May 21 alongside GUNS N' ROSES and RISE AGAINST . In June, SHINEDOWN will head overseas for a European run featuring festival appearances at Rock Im Park and Rock Am Ring in Germany, Download festival in the U.K. and Hellfest in France along with select shows with IRON MAIDEN . The band will then embark on a run of Canadian dates beginning in July with support from POP EVIL and AYRON JONES .

Ahead of the April 22 release of their new album Planet Zero , multi-platinum band Shinedown have announced the Planet Zero World Tour (produced by Live Nation), with special guests Jelly Roll and John Harvie , and have also released “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo,” a brand-new song from the forthcoming album.

The Planet Zero World Tour begins in Bonner Springs, KS on September 3 rd , kicking off a 20-date U.S. run of fall shows that will see the record-breaking, chart-topping band bring their new music, #1 hits, fan favorites, and biggest stage show yet to cities from coast to coast in support of Planet Zero . Tickets are available today at 10am local time at www.livenation.com . This leg of the Planet Zero World Tour also includes festival performances at Louder Than Life on September 23 in Louisville, KY, and Aftershock on October 9 in Sacramento, CA. Full routing below, including The Revolution’s Live Tour kicking off April 1 with special guests The Pretty Reckless and DIAMANTE, followed by UK/Europe festival sets and select shows with Iron Maiden in June and Canadian dates with special guests Pop Evil and Ayron Jones in July and August. For tickets and all show details, please visit  www.shinedown.com .

While lead single “Planet Zero” – Shinedown’s record-breaking 18 th #1 – remains in the top spot at Active Rock Radio for the fourth consecutive week , the band has released album track “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo.” The frenetic yet massively catchy track takes on the platforms and institutions that don’t value honesty and instead use half-truths, false narratives, and innuendo to push agendas that are often not reflective of the people’s best interest. PRESS HERE to listen to “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo” and HERE to check out the lyric video . Pre-order Planet Zero HERE . Each pre-order includes an instant download of “Planet Zero” and “The Saints of Violence and Innuendo.”

You live in a world where empathy goes to die ” –

The high-concept, ultra-vivid, viscerally charged album was produced by Shinedown’s Eric Bass (who also produced the band’s 2018 acclaimed album ATTENTION ATTENTION ,)   and recorded at  Bass’ newly built Big Animal Studio in South Carolina.

It is believed that the Y2K…

It is believed that the Y2K style revival evolved into an intriguing journey through the visual timeline of the latter 20th and 21st century. This fashion trend is a mix of vibrant patterns, futuristic motifs and unique accessories that convey the essence of a time characterized by optimism and technology. It is a time of innovation and nostalgia in the fashion world as designers draw inspiration from iconic Y2K styles, blending them with modern-day sensibilities. https://y2k-fashion.over-blog.com/ The era's obsession with logos, rhinestones, and shimmering fabrics has reemerged with a contemporary twist, reflecting a desire for both glamour and individual expression. The Y2K style, once considered to be eccentric, today is enjoying a revival which proves that fashion's cyclical nature permits the re-invention of styles, which makes the Y2K revival not only the result of a trend, but also a vibrant dialog with the past as well as the future. Fashion lovers continue to play with and incorporate Y2K-inspired features and styles, they highlight the timeless appeal of a time that is marked by bold experiments and open self-expression.

shinedown planet zero world tour

Multi platinum rock band  SHINEDOWN  have announced the UK and European leg of their  Planet Zero  World Tour, set to arrive on these shores in November 2022.

Tickets go on general sale  here  at 10am local time, Friday June 17th. Full itinerary below.

SHINEDOWN  frontman and vocal icon, Brent Smith states:

“We have always been inspired by the UK and European audiences. Their passion for music is extraordinary.

We are beyond excited to be returning as headliners, with our biggest show yet! We are overwhelmed by the love and support of our new album,  PLANET ZERO  and look forward to sharing our new songs, along with all of your  SHINEDOWN  favorites!!! Cheers!!!”

The last time the Florida band were this side of the pond in 2019, they recorded their O2 Arena show for the spectacular ‘Live In London’ concert film which you can watch  here .

Meanwhile,  SHINEDOWN ‘s hotly anticipated seventh studio album,  Planet Zero  arrives on July 1st via Atlantic Records. The collection serves up an incisive look at society’s issues at hand: cancel culture run rampant, the corrosive effects of social media on mental health and society and the increasingly toxic division among those of differing ideologies.
