2021 Tata Safari Review - 12 Pros & 12 Cons

car

Tata Safari Pros:

  • The iconic brand “Safari” is back! We agree with using the legendary nameplate for this car
  • Stunning looks & strong road presence. Solid build too
  • Classy, spacious cabin with comfortable seats & a chilling air-con
  • Extra 3rd row of seats brings lots more practicality & utility
  • Superb captain chairs available as an option for the middle row (top variant only)
  • Extras over the Harrier include rear disc brakes, TPMS, e-parking brake, auto-hold, boss mode…
  • Fantastic 9-speaker audio system. Sound quality & bass are enjoyable
  • 168 BHP 2.0L diesel offers good driveability and a punchy mid-range
  • Smooth & competent 6-speed automatic transmission
  • Sufficient ground clearance + terrain response system for rough and wet roads
  • Topnotch safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP, rest break reminder, hill hold, brake disc wiping & more
  • Features such as the panoramic sunroof, Eco & Sport modes, auto headlamps & wipers, cruise control…

Tata Safari Cons:

  • Heavy steering gets cumbersome at parking / u-turn / crawling speeds (<5 km/h)
  • 3rd row access is too difficult in the captain seat variant
  • Negligible boot space with all the seats up - a paltry 73 liters
  • Safari AT’s focus is on smoothness & comfort; gearbox is not the most responsive
  • Concerns over niggles & long-term reliability. Our test car had a problem too!
  • Service visit every 6 months / 7,500 km (12-months is the norm today)
  • Diesel engine does get loud above 3,500 rpm & its engine note is quite sad too
  • No petrol option (almost all competitors offer it). No AWD for enthusiasts either
  • Although improved, the Safari's steering @ 120 km/h is still a level too sensitive
  • Tata's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble
  • By 2021 standards, we’d expect wireless charging + front / 360 camera + ventilated seats
  • We don’t agree with the excessive chrome (outside), impractical white interiors & 18” rims (firmer ride)

Expert Review on Tata Safari

  • Solid Road Presence
  • Spacious And Comfortable Cabin
  • Well-Specced With A Host Of Features
  • Heavy Weight Is Quite Noticeable In Traffic
  • Automatic Gearbox Could Be More Responsive
  • Infotainment System Feels Not The Most Reliable

Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode.

Tata Safari

The Tata Safari carries the rich legacy of the original SUV that was a hit on Indian roads. The new Safari has been completely revamped and comes with more equipment and a whole new look and feel.

How’s the Design?

The Tata Safari has a front fascia that is almost similar to the Harrier. The split headlamp cluster is the same and there is a differentiated tri-arrow pattern for the front grille with chrome finishing. There is a third row of seats now and the roofline is also higher for the SUV along with a rear overhang which is longer. It also comes with a rear quarter glass that is full-sized and the tail-end is also very upright. The tail lights are different from the Harrier though. There are chunkier roof rails which are designed to indicate a stepped roof. The Safari is longer and taller while the wheelbase and width remain the same.

How does it perform?

The Tata Safari’s engine has high levels of refinement while there are Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The engine offers a wide and punchy power band, while the Sport mode is the best for higher drivability. You can easily get the SUV up to higher speeds although there is some noise when you rev the engine hard. There are 6-speed manual and automatic transmission systems and the driving experience is also neat. The clutch is a little heavy if you are using the manual transmission unit. Slotting the gears will require a little more effort in turn. The automatic version comes with a unit from Hyundai and shifts smoothly engine. The Safari is responsive and agile enough.

How’s the mileage?

  • Diesel Manual- 16.14 kmpl
  • Diesel Automatic- 14.08 kmpl

How’s the driving experience?

The Tata Safari offers a mixed bag in terms of the driving experience and the ride. The steering feels heavier at lower speeds while higher speeds are not as comforting or balanced. However, the Safari is a good highway cruiser and offers more confidence and stability. The suspension system is more robust and is softer as well, leading to better absorption of bumps at lower speeds. The Safari can readily tackle bad roads, potholes and uneven stretches.

What’s the interior like?

The cabin is quite similar to the Harrier. The dashboard looks neat although the Oyster White interior theme is the stand-out feature here. There is also the electronic parking brake now. There is a great view from the driver’s seat with mostly high quality materials inside. The central console, however, may eat into the driver’s knee room. The 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit appears small inside the car. The quality of the rear view camera could also have been better. There is a lengthy feature list including the JBL audio system, panoramic sunroof, and the powered seat for the driver along with connected tech features. Wireless charging is unavailable though. The middle row has theatre-esque seating with a higher placement for the seats. Comfort is great and the overall experience is good enough, with the 60:40 sliding function. There is a Boss  mode for adjusting the co-driver’s seat from the back itself. The top-end variant also gets a six-seater configuration with captain’s seats in the middle. These come with great cushioning and comfort, while offering several adjustments and a folding armrest. The rear windows however skip sun blinds and USB slots are hard to find when you venture near the central tunnel. The third row is accessible with the one-touch fold and tumble mechanism. Once you are in position, the space is not that bad. Adults will find decent legroom and the big windows create an airy feeling with blower control and two USB charging slots as well.

Tech and infotainment

The Tata Safari comes with its 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system with connected car and remote tracking functions, a reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, USB charging slots, JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat, and a lot more.

Safety equipment

The Tata Safari comes with six airbags along with ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, and brake assist. There are other features including fog lamps, parking sensors, and hill-descent control.

Which variant to buy?

You may check out the XT option if you are on a tighter budget. The XMA is the value pick from all the variants, while if you are okay paying more, then the XZA or XZ variants are par for the course. The XE variant has decent equipment at the entry level including good safety features, projector headlamps, remote central locking, power outlets, and more. The XM trim comes with the automatic transmission option, a 7 inch touch screen infotainment unit, driving modes and more. The XT gets more premium features including TPMS, automatic wipers and headlamps, rear view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, LE3D DRLs, iRA connectivity suite, ambient lighting, and a lot more. It comes only in the manual guise. The XT offers a panoramic sunroof for an extra amount. The XZ comes with an automatic transmission system and is a value offering with more airbags and safety features, the 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit, 7 inch semi-digital instrument console, terrain response modes, JBL audio system, Xenon headlamps, and more. The XZ+ and XZA+ take it up a notch with captain’s chairs and the sunroof but are costlier. The XZ+ Adventure is more popular with buyers due to its interior changes.

Which cars compete in the segment?

The Tata Safari takes on the Mahindra XUV500 and the MG Hector Plus in its segment. It is the tallest and widest of the lot, while the MG Hector is the longest here. The Hector Plus has the biggest boot space while the Safari has the lowest volume. The Safari and Hector Plus both have more powerful diesel engines in terms of output. However, the torque output is the highest for the XUV500’s diesel engine. The Safari manages to hold its own in terms of features, design, handling, performance, and interior space.

Verdict (Value for Money)

The Tata Safari offers a spacious and comfortable last row of seats along with a rugged and durable vibe. It offers good performance, a refined engine, and a long list of features. The SUV’s design is also a head-turner on the road. However, the driving dynamics and heavy steering could be minor hindrances. If you talk about a muscular and attractive three-row SUV with good performance, then the Tata Safari certainly makes a strong case for itself.

Tata Safari Price List (Variant Wise)

Tata Safari Ex-Showroom price ranges from ₹ 15.49 to 27.34 Lakh. Tata offers Safari in 29 variants. The top variant of Safari is Accomplished Plus 6S Dark AT and the base variant is Smart.

With its bold design, robust build, and comfortable interior, it has remained a popular choice among SUV enthusiasts. The facelifted version of the Tata Safari has brought about several updates that make it even more appealing.

One of the standout features of the Tata Safari is its spacious and well-appointed interior. The Tata Safari interior has been revamped in the facelift, offering a more modern and luxurious feel. It now features a revised dashboard design with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. When it comes to pricing, the Tata Safari 2021 price in India starts from ₹16.19 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base model. The top model, which includes more advanced features and premium trims, is priced higher. The Tata Safari's top model price reflects the additional tech and luxury features packed into the SUV. The Tata Safari's on-road price varies depending on the location and the chosen variant, as it includes registration, insurance, and other charges.

The Tata Safari mileage is another aspect that appeals to buyers, balancing performance and fuel efficiency. The SUV is powered by a 2.0-liter diesel engine that delivers satisfactory mileage, making it suitable for both city driving and long road trips.

Tata Safari Storme and Tata Safari's old model hold a special place for those who follow the safari lineage. The Safari Storme was known for its rugged performance and off-road capabilities, while the older models laid the foundation for the SUV's reputation for reliability and durability. The new Safari builds on this legacy with modern advancements and improved features.

The Tata Safari XE variant offers a more affordable entry point into the Safari lineup, providing essential features and the same strong build quality as the higher trims. Additionally, the Tata Safari black edition is available for those who prefer a more striking and bold appearance.

Overall, the Tata Safari car is a versatile and reliable SUV that offers a compelling mix of comfort, technology, and performance. With the latest facelift, Tata Motors has ensured that the Safari continues to be a strong contender in the SUV segment, appealing to both long-time fans and new buyers looking for a robust and stylish vehicle.

Pick from popular cities, 2021 tata safari: which variant to buy.

With a total of 11 variants on offer, we tell you which Safari variant is the best one to spend on.

2021 Tata Safari: Which variant to buy?

The Tata Safari launched back in February 2021, with introductory prices starting at Rs 14.69 lakh. Tata offers its flagship SUV with a sole diesel engine, two gearbox options and seven trims, which means there are a total of 11 variants to choose from. Read on to know which one of these 11 is right for you.

  • Tata Safari priced between Rs 14.69-21.45 lakh
  • Automatic option is expensive but adds convenience
  • Opt for the Safari XT for a budget manual gearbox car
  • Safari XMA is the choice for the budget conscious automatic buyer
  • Buy the Safari XZ/XZA variant if price is no object

2021 Tata Safari: Automatic or manual version

The Safari shares its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with the Tata Harrier . In both SUVs, this unit, dubbed Kryotec 170, makes 170hp and 350Nm of peak torque, and comes with manual and automatic gearbox options.

The 6-speed manual gearbox works well with the 2.0-litre diesel engine - the clutch is relatively light and the gates are well-defined, though it isn’t among the slickest of shifters. The Hyundai-sourced 6-speed torque convertor automatic transmission also gels well with the engine and does add a much-needed dose of convenience in urban environs. However, it is priced at a not insignificant Rs 1.25 lakh premium.

2021 Tata Safari XE: Well-kitted for an entry-level variant

With kit such as dual front airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), hill-hold assist, traction control, rollover mitigation, corner stability control, ABS with EBD, front and rear disc brakes and rear parking sensors, the base XE variant (Rs 14.69 lakh) doesn’t skimp in the safety department.

In terms of convenience features and creature comforts, the Safari XE does get essentials like projector headlamps, 16-inch steel wheels with covers, daytime running lights, roof rails that can carry up to 75kg, remote central locking, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering, power windows, air conditioning with second and third row vents, 12V power outlets in the second and third row, reclining second row seat backrest, 50:50 split-folding third row and a boss mode that allows the co-driver’s seat to be adjusted from the rear seats.

However, the entry-level trim is only available with the manual gearbox.

2021 Tata Safari XM: Gets an auto option

The next trim in line, the Safari XM (Rs 16.00 lakh) is also available in automatic form (XMA: Rs 17.25 lakh) and adds features like a display for the rear parking sensors, follow me home headlights, fog lamps, a rear wiper, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a six-speaker audio system, steering mounted controls, driver’s seat height adjust, electric adjust for the wing mirrors and drive modes for the engine – Eco, City and Sport.

The additional features do come at a significant Rs 1.31 lakh premium over the XE. However, the XM/XMA does get you more than necessary safety kit and a decent amount of convenience features too. If you’d prefer an automatic Safari on a budget, the XMA makes for a sensible choice.

2021 Tata Safari XT: Premium features make an appearance

Although you pay a hefty Rs 1.45 lakh premium for the Safari XT (Rs 17.45 lakh) over the XM, you do get additional safety kit and more than a few premium features. Auto headlamps and wipers, a tyre pressure monitor and a rear-view camera are on offer with this trim, along with 18-inch alloy wheels and LED DRLs enhancing its exterior. Features such as auto climate control, an eight-speaker sound system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, Tata’s iRA in-car connectivity suite (a 1-year subscription is free), power folding wing mirrors, keyless entry and go, cruise control, a rear centre armrest and ambient lighting are also available on the Safari XT.

As the Safari XT is only available in manual form, it is the best option for those who don’t mind shifting gears themselves and are on a budget.

2021 Tata Safari XT+: A panoramic sunroof is all you get

The Safari XT+ (Rs 18.25 lakh) just adds a panoramic sunroof to the XT’s list of equipment for an extra Rs 80,000. While the massive sunroof does uplift the cabin and give it a sense of airiness, it may not be for those who are more budget conscious.

2021 Tata Safari XZ: Most value for money variant

Like the XM trim, the XZ is also available with the automatic transmission option in the XZA. The Safari XZ (Rs 19.15 lakh) and XZA (Rs 20.40 lakh), add side and curtain airbags, hill-descent control, an electronic parking brake, an auto dimming rear view mirror, ISOFIX child seat anchors, 18-inch machined alloys, fog lamps with a cornering function, xenon HID projector headlamps, Oyster White leatherette upholstery, an 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a nine-speaker JBL audio system, a 7.0-inch part-digital instrument cluster and Terrain Response Modes – Normal, Rough and Wet.

With this much equipment added, the Rs 90,000 premium over the XT+ is more than justified. However, the XZ and XZA variants do not get the panoramic sunroof.

2021 Tata Safari XZ+: Expensive for what it is

The fully-loaded Safari XZ+ (Rs 19.99 lakh) and XZA+ (Rs 21.25 lakh) add a sunroof to the XZ’s package. They also come with the option of getting six seats instead of seven - the second-row bench is replaced by a pair of captain’s chairs. These updates come for about Rs 85,000 more than the XZ.

2021 Tata Safari XZ+ Adventure: More popular than the XZ+

Despite the Rs 20,000 extra buyers pay for the Safari Adventure Persona (Rs 20.20-21.45 lakh), it is in higher demand than the XZ+ . That’s mostly down to the cosmetic changes on the inside - the Adventure Persona gets beige-on-black interior trim with brown leatherette seat upholstery instead of the Oyster White one. The former is seen as easier to keep clean. The Adventure edition also gets an exclusive blue colour called Tropical Mist, along with blacked-out 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails and bits on the grille. Opt for the Adventure over the XZ+ if price is not a limitation.

Engine and Performance

Left Front Three Quarter

The 2023 avatar of the Tata Safari retains the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic unit. This motor meets BS6 Phase 2 emissions standards and produces 168bhp and 350Nm of peak torque. The automatic transmission still works very well, with the shifts that remain quick, smooth, and in sync with the engine’s characteristics and power delivery. There is enough torque for pulling from low speeds, and the transmission's responsiveness to both upshifts and downshifts makes the driving experience enjoyable. It also gets paddle shifters, and they respond well, making the driving experience more engaging.

Engine Shot

The Eco, City, and Sport driving modes remain unchanged, offering responsive throttle inputs. The Safari has sufficient load-carrying and people-hauling capabilities in both urban and highway settings, and it can overtake effortlessly despite its size and weight. This Tata SUV remains planted and stable at triple-digit speeds, and its performance is not compromised despite being larger and heavier than the Harrier. The terrain mode selector, which efficiently alters the response through software maps, has been retained too. However, some off-road enthusiasts may argue that all-wheel drive (AWD) would have made the SUV more capable in hilly regions and slippery conditions. Nonetheless, our experience suggests that the Safari can tackle trails and rough terrain with poise for the most part.

Ride and Handling

Right Side View

The Safari's high ground clearance, tall stance, and well-tuned suspension allow it to effortlessly absorb bumps, potholes, and ruts on broken roads. Occupants are not unsettled, and there is minimal noise inside the cabin — whether driving at low or high speeds. Its robust build quality and Land Rover underpinnings are evident in its ride and handling.

Left Front Three Quarter

Previous Safari owners complained about the heavy hydraulic steering, but the new electronic power steering has addressed this issue. It feels lighter at low speeds but adds weight as the speed increases, as is also noticeable in the Sport mode. The ADAS, meanwhile, is not intrusive and gently guides the car back into the marked lane if it starts to veer off. Then, all the disc brakes provide good stopping power and work well with the emergency automatic braking system. Overall, both systems functioned flawlessly, with the adaptive cruise control responding to commands instantly.

Left Rear Three Quarter

Exterior Design

Right Front Three Quarter

Despite being a facelift, the new model has been significantly redesigned, giving it a concept-like appearance and a more upmarket feel than its predecessor. The new single grille is unique, with accents that match the exterior body colour on this version. The connected LED bar is a welcome addition, and the new squared-off headlamp housings on the re-sculpted bumper further distinguish it from the previous model.

Right Rear Three Quarter

Moreover, the new 19-inch wheels have an attractive design similar to the Sierra concept's wheels showcased at this year's Auto Expo. The rear section has been updated with tweaked taillights and a new LED bar that gets the welcome and goodbye animation in line with the front. There's also a faux skid plate on the redesigned bumper with vertically stacked reflectors and reverse light housing.

Interior and Features

Dashboard

The interior has also been updated, but the overall design remains largely unchanged. The most noticeable change is the new steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, which was first seen on the new Nexon. Tata has also addressed our previous criticism of this new steering’s horn placement, which was awkward and difficult to use. The horn has now been repositioned and is more responsive to inputs.

Front Row Seats

The new Safari also features touch controls for the AC. Other major updates to the dashboard include a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a fully digital instrument cluster. The latter gets readable fonts, fast response time, and high customisability, and is packed with information, including ADAS. The touchscreen is also highly responsive and has a clean UI, but it lacks haptic feedback and knobs for quick control.

Front Row Seats

The seating layout remains unchanged, with ample space in all rows. However, a major improvement that elevates its interior's premium feel is the high-quality materials used for the upholstery, dashboard, and most surfaces. Nothing feels cheap or out of place, and the cabin remains robust. The Safari has been known for its 'boss mode', and it continues to offer a laid-back seating position with power adjustments. The seats also get adjustable headrests for enhanced comfort. To further delight passengers, ventilated seats are now available in both rows, which will be a blessing in our hot and humid climate.

Second Row Seats

The carmaker has also taken the safety aspect up a notch. For example, all variants/personas now come standard with six airbags, while the top-spec version gets an additional driver's knee airbag. In addition, the Safari gets a 360-degree camera and a host of ADAS features, including new ones like adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, high beam assist, lane change alert, and lane departure warning. Other ADAS features include door open alert, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Additionally, other important safety features include rear collision warning, forward collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking, which worked effectively. The SUV also gets disc brakes on all four wheels.

Third Row Seats

The new Safari is also equipped with a new e-call feature for emergency assistance. With a touch of a button, the breakdown call can notify the roadside assistance service. Other impressive tech features that worked flawlessly include the new TFT cluster, terrain mode selector with TFT screen, audio controls compatible with Alexa, powered tailgate opening, and the connected car experience. Finally, whether you choose the six- or seven-seater version, every variant, from the entry-level Smart to the top-spec Accomplished+, offers a good variety of exterior colour options and material choices.

Instrument Cluster

Tata Motors wants to broaden the appeal of the new Safari with a wider range of exterior colours, including a segment-first dual-tone option, and a plethora of new features. The Safari retains its macho appearance, making it a symbol of authority while offering a premium and spacious cabin. Prospective buyers also get new technology and added connectivity, all while cocooned in safety. Tata Motors also has kept the premium reasonable, making the new Safari an easy choice for buyers, given its many appealing features.

The Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter both have their own strengths and weaknesses. The Tata Punch offers a good riding experience, attractive design, and good build quality, but it is criticized for being overpriced and lacking certain features. On the other hand, the Hyundai Exter provides a rugged appeal, loaded with features, and competitive pricing, but it has limited engine options and interior space. Ultimately, the choice between the two would depend on your specific priorities and preferences.

Can Hyundai improve its market share in mid-large SUV segment with Alcazar 2024?

The entry-level variant of the 2024 hyundai alcazar is rs 1.78 lakh cheaper than that of the outgoing model..

Listen to Story

Hyundai Alcazar

  • The 2024 Alcazar price starts at Rs 14.99 lakh (ex-showroom)
  • The SUV has both petrol and diesel powertrains
  • It rivals Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Safari, among others

The Hyundai Alcazar 2024 has finally entered the market. The 6/7-seater SUV has been launched at a starting price of Rs 14.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The playing ground for this model is the mid-large SUV segment, which is dominated by the Mahindra Scorpio. The important question is whether the updated vehicle will be able to make a mark for itself given the major enhancements that have been made.

At present, the SUV segment has a share of over 53% of the total car sales in India. Within the SUV segment, the mid-large SUVs have a contribution of nearly 14.5%. The overall monthly volumes for the mid-large SUVs are around 20,000 units. On average, the Alcazar sells almost 2,000 units per month.

While the old Alcazar was available at a starting price of Rs 16.77 lakh (ex-showroom), the base variant of the new model is Rs 1.78 lakh cheaper, which is a smart move by Hyundai, considering how price-sensitive the Indian market is. The Scorpio-N starts at Rs 13.85 (ex-showroom) and the Scorpio Classic at Rs 13.62 lakh (ex-showroom).

Like its predecessor, the Alcazar 2024 has both petrol and diesel engine options. The 1.5-litre Turbo GDi petrol engine (160PS and 253Nm) can be clubbed either with a 6-speed MT or a 7-speed DCT. The 1.5-litre CRDi diesel engine (116PS and 250Nm) gets 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT torque converter choices.

The Alcazar was initially launched in India in June 2021. Hyundai has sold more than 75,000 units of this SUV till now, with the diesel variants making up 57% of the total sales and the petrol variants 43%. Also, the share of manual and automatic variants has been 44% and 56%, respectively.

Hyundai is known to load its vehicles with segment-leading features. A similar treatment has been given to the new Alcazar. It comes with quad-beam LED headlamps, H-shaped LED DRLs, connected LED taillamps, new LED turn signals with sequential function and redesigned 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.

There is a new dual-tone colour theme in Noble Brown and Haze Navy inside the cabin. There are new front and second-row ventilated seats, powered driver and co-driver seats, memory function for the driver seat, integrated 10.25-inch infotainment and 10.25-inch instrument cluster screens, and new dual-zone automatic climate control with a touch-type AC control panel.

The feature list is long, something that is sure to make Hyundai buyers quite happy. There is an 8-speaker Bose premium sound system, second-row wireless charger, magnetic pad (on the driver console) and voice-enabled panoramic sunroof. You get more than 70 Bluelink connected-car features along with smartwatch and smartphone connectivity, over 270 embedded VR commands, 10 ambient sounds of nature, multi-language UI support with 10 regional and two international languages, and Digital Key with NFC technology.

Focussing on the massification of premium features , Hyundai has now introduced Level 2 ADAS, which offers 19 functionalities, in the Alcazar 2024. The SUV has more than 40 standard safety features and overall 70+ safety features.

There is no doubt that the Hyundai Alcazar 2024 is a much better package than before. But apart from the Mahindra Scorpio, the mid-large SUV segment also has the Tata Safari and the MG Hector Plus. These three SUVs are bigger in size than the Hyundai Alcazar 2024, and size does play a crucial role in this space. Although the Hyundai Alcazar 2024 checks most of the important boxes (price, powertrains, features and new technology), we will have to wait to see how things pan out for this updated SUV.
