Peter Baker’s final round of 72 secured victory for the Englishman at the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship as he finished the tournament six shots clear of his nearest competitor, Greg Owen.

Rounds of 69, 66, 69 and 72 across the four days in Aberdeen were enough to secure Baker’s third Legends Tour victory of the year and with this victory, Baker sits on top of the Order of Merit Rankings with a points tally of 2499.6 points, 328.3 ahead of Germany’s Alex Cejka in second.

Gary Murphy finished the weekend with back-to-back rounds of 79, leaving the lone Irishman in contention on 11-over-par for the tournament and in a tie for 45th.

Murphy began the day with a pair of birdies with the 50-year-old certainly hoping to rectify a poor third-round that put him out of the running for a high finish in Scotland.

A bogey on the third ate into his fast start slightly, although a birdie on the fifth put the Irishman back onto two-under-par for the day.

Unfortunately for Murphy, he carded another double bogey on the fourth which would be the beginning of a poor run of holes as he finished the front nine with another dropped shot.

Two bogeys on either side of a triple bogey on the 11th put Murphy on six-over-par for the day, and although there was some joy with a birdie on the 13th it was short-lived as he followed it up with bogeys on the 14th and 16th, finishing off a disappointing end to what could have been a more fruitful weekend for the Irishman.

Peter Baker had a relatively mixed day in terms of scoring across both the front and back nine as he attempted to maintain his healthy lead at the top of the standings.

A birdie on the opening hole was erased by a bogey on the following hole. Another red score on the fourth put the Englishman onto one-under-par for the day but another dropped shot on the seventh sent Baker into the back nine on level par.

A bogey on the 11th brought Baker’s overall score to -11 but his lead at the top was never in jeopardy, and a final birdie on the 15th finished his final round on a bright note, finishing six shots clear of the field.

It’s very special to win an event like this, with all the names on this trophy it goes back a long way so to get my name on the trophy means a lot and I’m delighted,” said Baker.

“I put myself in a great position after the first three days.” He said. “Today was really tough and the conditions were a lot harder, so it was a real battle for me to get it over the line but fortunately I have.”

The next Legends Tour event on the schedule is the WCW Legends Open de France which is to be hosted at the Golf de Saint-Cloud course in Paris, hosted by Jean Van de Velde.

Scottie Scheffler closes with 9-under 62 to win Olympics thriller at Le Golf National

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France — Scottie Scheffler delivered the best performance of his greatest year by rallying from four shots behind Sunday with a 9-under 62 to win the Olympics in a thriller at Le Golf National.

Already a six-time winner on the PGA Tour this year, including his second Masters, Scheffler added Olympic gold to an astonishing season with a round that kept some 30,000 fans on edge.

The world’s No. 1 player matched the course record at Le Golf National and he still needed plenty of help.

Jon Rahm of Spain had a four-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood of England when he stepped on the 11th tee. Fleetwood caught him in two holes as Rahm had a stunning collapse.

Scheffler who charged to the front with four straight birdies down the stretch, none bigger than gouging an 8-iron shot out of deep rough on the 17th hole and making the 18-foot birdie putt to take the lead. He set an Olympic record for 72 holes at 19-under 265.

Fleetwood was second after a 66, and Hideki Matsuyama took the bronze medal at 17 under after a 65. Rahm tied for sixth at 15 under after a 70.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Moriya Jutanugarn emerged from a tight pack at Columbia Edgewater to win the Portland Classic for her third career LPGA Tour title.

Three strokes behind leader Andrea Lee going into the round, Jutanugarn shot a 6-under 66 in mostly calm conditions for a two-stroke victory over three players.

Jutanugarn finished at 22-under 266, playing the first 71 holes without a bogey. The 30-year-old Thai player birdied Nos. 13-15 and made an 8-footer to save par on the par-3 16th. She made a short birdie putt on the par-4 17th and closed with a bogey.

Narin An (66), Nataliya Guseva (68) and Angel Yin (69) tied for second. Guseva is the first Russian player with an LPGA Tour card.

Jutanugarn also won the 2018 HUGEL-JTBC LA Open and 2021 Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational team event with younger sister Ariya Jutanugarn. Ariya Jutanugarn, a 12-time LPGA Tour winner, closed with a 65 on Sunday to tie for ninth at 17 under.

Korn Ferry Tour

FARMINGTON, Utah — Karl Vilips of Australia won the Utah Championship in his fourth Korn Ferry Tour start, finishing with a 5-under 66 for a two-stroke victory.

Vilips had a 25-under 259 total at Oakridge Country Club. The 22-year-old former Stanford player jumped to 44th to 15th in the season standings, with the final top 30 earning PGA Tour cards.

Joe Weiler (64) and Matt McCarty (68) tied for second, McCarty shot 61 on Saturday.

U.S. Golf Association

PITTSBURGH — Leta Lindley won the U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Fox Chapel after finishing second the last two years, closing with a tournament-record 7-under 64 for a two-stroke victory.

The 52-year-old Lindley, birdied five of the first eight holes and added two more on the par-4 14th and 15th. She finished at 9-under 275, a record for total strokes in the event first played in 2018.

Kaori Yamamoto of Japan, five strokes ahead entering the round, birdied the final two holes in a 71 to finish second.

Other tours

Ian Gilligan won the Western Amateur on Saturday by beating Florida teammate Jack Turner in 29 holes at Moraine Country Club in Dayton, Ohio. The 11-hole playoff was the longest in the 125-year history of the Western Amateur. Gilligan and Turner each won semifinal matches in 19 holes. ... Barend Botha of South Africa won the BioSteel Championship for his second straight PGA Tour Americas victory. Botha shot 64-63-64-63 at Ambassador in Windsor, Ontario, to finish at 26-under 254. He won the Commissionaires Ottawa Open last week, also finishing at 26 under. John Keefer (62) and Matthew Anderson (64) were a stroke back. ... Robert Coles won the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship at Trump International in Aberdeen, Scotland, for his first Legends Tour title. The Englishman shot a 1-under 71 for a one-stroke victory over local favorite Paul Lawrie (76). Coles finished at 4 under. Legends Tour chief executive says PGA Seniors Championship at Trump International Links will be bigger and better in 2024

It was confirmed earlier this week that the Aberdeenshire venue will stage the tour’s flagship event for the next three years.

Legends Tour chief executive Phil Harrison says this year’s Staysure PGA Seniors Championship at Trump International Links completely surpassed expectations – but he believes the 2024 edition will be even better.

It was confirmed earlier this week that the Aberdeenshire venue will stage the Legends Tour’s flagship event for the next three years.

Harrison, a former European Tour player turned business management consultant who was appointed Legends Tour CEO in 2021, believes Trump International Links is the perfect setting for the tournament.

He said: “The players absolutely loved it this year.

“The course already has an incredible reputation. A lot of the players were playing the course for the first time and they thought it was fantastic.

“The amateur players were all putting their name down for next year and the celebrity pro-am was a hugely successful day.

“It is fantastic news we have got the tournament coming back here for the next few years.

“We expected decent crowds but it turned out to be a record week for us.

“I think we had more than 15,000 people over the course of the week.

“The tournament exceeded our expectations but next year, with it being during the school holidays and the week after the Senior Open at Carnoustie, I think we’ll get great crowds.

“We will try to get some players to stay on after the Senior Open so I’m hopeful we will have a really strong field.

“For lots of reason, we can elevate this tournament in the second year.

“We know where everything goes in terms of the tented village and hospitality.

“It is going to be great.”

pga senior tour aberdeen

Excellent spectator experience

Harrison, who has been visiting Trump International Links this week, said the feedback from spectators who attended this year’s event was hugely positive.

He said: “It felt like rolling back the years when you saw the spectators walking the fairways behind the players.

“You don’t really see that at golf events now.

“A lot of the players enjoyed that – some of them felt it was almost too close – but from a spectator point of view it was great.

“On the television, it looked great seeing the spectators walking the fairways.

“A lot of the spectators saw the course for the first time.

“It was spectacular.

“It is a course designed for spectators because of the elevation of the dunes.

“It is just a great venue.”

pga senior tour aberdeen

Good times for senior golf

With players such as Padraig Harrington still competitive on the main tours after turning 50, Harrison believes seniors golf is in a strong place.

He said: “Padraig is a bit of a one-off as the speed in his golf swing is still there and he has worked hard to maintain that.

“A lot of golfers see turning 50 and playing seniors golf as a new career for them.

“Look at Bernhard Langer – he is 66 and still winning tournaments which is incredible.

“They still have the skill level and the equipment and golf ball has helped.

“Bernhard is hitting the ball the same length now as he did when he was 35 or 36.

“In terms of the Legends Tour, Covid was a difficult starting point for us.

“The European Tour kept tournaments going but it was more difficult for us.

“Our starting point was eight or nine events but this year we have 15 and next year we will have 20 events outside of the majors which is good growth.

“We are taking the tour to Asia, the Caribbean and Africa.

“It is very much a global tour now.

“Our relationship with Staysure – with eight million travelling customers – helps when it comes to promoting countries or venues.”

A winning partnership

Sarah Malone, executive vice-president of Trump International Scotland, believes the partnership is perfect for both parties.

She said: “We have been working towards this for many years.

“The timing was perfect.

“The first year is always the year where there are lots of unknowns but everything came together beautifully.

“We have a great chemistry with the Legends Tour.

“We can do things going forward knowing we are hosting the event year on year.

“It is great news for the north-east and golf in the area.

“The partnership feels great.”

Opportunity knocks for PGA’s senior Members

The PGA’s 2024 tournament schedule for its senior Members reflects one of golf’s key attractions that age is no barrier to playing the game, either competitively at an elite level or socially. In addition to the traditional and popular Senior PGA Professional Championship and PGA Super 60s Championships, the programme includes two events that increase Members’ chances of qualifying for the Legends Tour’s Staysure PGA Seniors Championship.

The top two finishers in each of these two PGA-organised 36-hole tournaments will qualify for the Legends Tour’s Staysure PGA Seniors Championship (won last year by England's Peter Baker) which returns to the Trump International Golf Links, Aberdeen, in August. Furthermore, players occupying the next three places in each event will gain exemptions for final qualifying.

Introduced last year and known as the Staysure Q-Series, the two events will each have a maximum field of 144, carry a prize fund of £20,000 and be staged at Royal Ascot Golf Club on May 28-29 and Rockcliffe Hall Golf Club on June 24-25.

The Series is bookended by the Senior PGA Professional Championship, which will be staged at Moor Park Golf Club, Hertfordshire, from May 15-17, and the Super 60s Championship at Formby Hall, Merseyside, from August 14-15.

The former, contested on the High and West courses at the prestigious venue, carries a prize fund of close on £40,000 and rewards each of the top 15 finishers from an anticipated field of 288 with a place in the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship.

Richard Dinsdale, who is attached to PGA Partner Asbri Golf, booked his place in the Trump International showpiece last year thanks to a top 15 finish and, reflecting on the experience, said: “I loved it. I played well but missed the cut by one or two due to a couple of poor drives.

“It’s a fantastic place and I’m keen to qualify again. It’s on my to do list for this season and hopefully that will be via the Senior Pros. If not, then it’s great there are a couple of other chances through the Q-Series.”

At 51, Dinsdale is not eligible for the PGA Super 60s Championship, not so Graham Laing, the head PGA Professional at North Wilts Golf Club.

Laing is a regular participant in the Senior PGA Professional and Super 60s, an event he won in tandem with his amateur partner Steve Cook at Tewkesbury Park, Gloucestershire, in 2021.

Laing has also entered the Super 60s Championship and added: “I don’t play a lot these days but always enter the two PGA Seniors events. Not only are they competitive, but they are also great social occasions and give us the chance to catch up with old friends and meet some of the younger seniors.”

This year’s Super 60s Championship carries a prize purse of £10,000 which takes the amount on offer to The PGA’s senior Members to almost £90,000. In addition, and if fully subscribed, the four events comprise more than 600 playing opportunities.

Commenting on the event programme, Richard Barker PGA, Executive Director – Business Development, said: “We are delighted to continue the Q-Series for a second year. We remain committed to providing significant playing opportunities to PGA Members over the age of 50, and this year’s events are testament to that.

“With an increased prize fund, some prestigious host venues and multiple opportunities to qualify for the Legends Tour’s Staysure PGA Seniors Championship, I’d urge all those eligible to take part.”
