I Tried the Backpack That's Been Hailed As the 'Perfect Travel Bag' — and Now I Use It Instead of My Purse

It also has a reputation for being the best "just-in-case" bag for travelers, so I put it to the test.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

A good tote bag is worth its weight in gold — especially one that works no matter where you are going or what you are doing. Recently, I took the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack on a trip to Mexico City because I wanted something other than my purse to use while out and about exploring the town. Much to my surprise, I'd enlisted the help of one of the most versatile travel bags I've ever encountered — it is three bags in one, after all.

This tote was convenient to pack because it folds down to the size of a paperback book and I could add it to my laptop case when not in use. But, if you were to carry it on the plane, it fits under an airplane seat without being too bulky. It is the perfect cross between a duffle bag, a backpack, and a purse. From running errands around town, hiking, shopping, sightseeing, or even going on an adventure, it carries your essentials effortlessly.

To buy: rei.com , $99

As previously mentioned, the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack boasts impressive versatility, and users can easily customize its multitasking design with its three different carrying options — by hand, over your shoulder, or even on your back like a traditional backpack. I was carrying it on my shoulder as I was shopping around the streets of Mexico City’s La Condesa neighborhood to keep my wallet handy while shopping, but seamlessly turned it into a backpack as soon as we walked into the National Museum of Anthropology because I wanted to be hands-free and careful around all the beautiful artifacts.

Travel + Leisure / Emily Belfiore

I also found the pack to be quite strong and durable. Like many of Patagonia’s products, this one is made of 100 percent recycled nylon and is weather resistant with its durable and waterproof silicone and polyurethane coatings, which is good news if your trip forecast will be plagued with inclement weather.

Beyond its multipurpose exterior, the Black Hole Tote Pack is also stocked with thoughtful features to delight any traveler. The internal compression straps and the bungee cord are game changers because you can really stuff the convertible backpack to the brim, and still have room to close it with the large zipper at the top.

There's also an internal zippered pocket, which acts as prime storage to keep essentials like your wallet, keys, and smartphone secure, whereas the external zippered pocket will prove to be more useful to stow away less valuable (but still highly precious) travel items like sunglasses, lip balm, or sunscreen — a.k.a. things that you might need in a pinch and don't want to dig through inside your bag for. I also appreciated the two stretch-mesh water-bottle pockets on the outside; I could store away both my reusable bottles as I walked around the city and did not worry about running out of water.

Pockets aside, one thing that really surprised me was how comfortable the bag was to carry. I am always cautious of how traditional backpack harnesses will fit my somewhat shorter frame. But, the ones on the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack are adjustable and made from highly breathable mesh, so not only does it fit like a glove, but it also doesn’t get too sweaty or uncomfortable with extended use. They also neatly tuck away when using the pack over your shoulder or holding it in your hand — another unexpectedly thoughtful design feature.

With a 27-liter capacity and a 15.5-inch by 10.3-inch by 8-inch frame, this pack can fit a lot of stuff, and I found it so helpful that I got rid of my hefty travel purse and put everything I needed in this bag for most of my trip. When not in use, it weighs 13 ounces and can be stuffed into its pocket for easy packing, which is why it's been dubbed as the best “just-in-case” bag by REI shoppers. One reviewer wrote, “I purchased this packable tote bag just in case my daypack was too small for the conference I was going to. This bag was a lifesaver and went above and beyond for an entire week."

Another customer called it a “perfect travel bag” because of its versatility, which is what I appreciated as well during my travels: “I love the bag because of how functional it is. The top straps are long enough to carry it under your arm (a common problem with these bags). It's perfect for conferences, groceries, walking around town, bike commutes, and trips to the dog park."

I hate to admit it, but I got the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack with the intent of shoving it in my suitcase and using it only if needed while traveling. But after it proved to be so useful in Mexico City, I find myself reaching for it regularly. Outside of traveling, it is the perfect size to carry groceries, my gym gear, or anything I need for a day out and about. So, if you are looking for a great multi-purposeful bag (and a backup for extra storage when you're traveling), this is the one for you.

I know I will be bringing the Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack along for all my travels this year and beyond. So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and get one for yourself at REI. If its almost-$100 price tag is a bit of a deterrent, don't fret; keep scrolling to shop some of the best (and affordable) convertible backpacks that can also be used as tote bags, everyday purses, and more.

The Best Thing I Bought This Year Is My ‘Secret Second Suitcase’

Portrait of Louis Cheslaw

If you’ve read any of our  Strategist editor hauls , you’ll know that our writers and editors buy a lot of stuff, and even though we think carefully about each thing that goes into our carts, there are still standouts. To close out the year, we’ve asked our staffers to write about the best thing they bought in the past 12 months. Today, associate editor Louis Cheslaw on the deceptively roomy Patagonia travel pack that he now can’t live without.

With my family living in London and my girlfriend’s in California, we fly a fair bit. And because I loathe checking luggage, I’m forever trying to squeeze as much as I can into my carry-on allowance . That’s always meant wearing two coats to fly and stuffing various totes and backpacks to the brim, only to disassemble them when I need to pull out my passport. But this year everything became so much easier as soon as I purchased a 26-liter travel pack from Patagonia, one of the smallest pieces of luggage in the brand’s Black Hole series that so many Strategist writers and editors also use for their own travel.

Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC 30L

Editor’s note: Patagonia says that as a result of “production and shipping delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” this bag is temporarily out of stock. You can join the waitlist to be notified as soon as it’s available again.

The first thing to know is that when it comes to volume, 26 liters is as large as a bag can be while still qualifying as the “personal item” you can bring on board with your main carry-on suitcase and slide under the seat in front of you. (The MLC in the full product name actually stands for “maximum legal carry-on.”) Within that capacity, I can easily fit two pairs of shoes as well as a week’s worth of underwear, socks, and thin shirts, relieving a ton of pressure on my suitcase — TravelPro’s Platinum Elite Softside Spinner, if you’re interested . Unlike the totes that came before it, my Patagonia bag is now such a useful part of my packing process that I’ve taken to calling it my “secret second suitcase”; I still feel like I’m cheating the system whenever I get it into the cabin. And just like a suitcase, the bag lies flat on the floor when you pack it with a deep and structured interior.

And that’s just focusing on the main storage section. This bag has three added zip pockets on the outside, all critically useful in their own way. There’s a large padded laptop pocket on the back panel; a small zip pocket at the front for quick access to passports, charging cables, and keys; and — my favorite — a larger zip pocket just behind it that can fit a book and plenty of magazines.

According to my research, the MLC series has the most carrying options of the entire Black Hole line. There’s a cushioned sling strap that can go across your chest, two padded backpack straps — which are what I use the most — and handles on the top and side if you’d rather carry it like a duffel . There’s an outer sleeve that allows the bag to slip down over the handles of any suitcase, freeing me up to commute to the airport with a spare hand available at all times and without carrying any weight on my body.

Taking into account that the bag is also coated in Patagonia’s light, water-repellent Black Hole material — and comes with their lifetime warranty — I feel it’s likely that the best thing I bought this year might also end up being the most useful product in my life for years to come.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments , rolling luggage , pillows for side sleepers , natural anxiety remedies , and bath towels . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.

Red Lightweigh

The Patagonia Lightweight Travel Pack is a must have for anyone that likes to travel light. As the name suggests, the Lightweight Travel Pack is truly light and weighs a mere 11.4 ounces. Despite its lightweight status, this daypack is thoughtfully designed with nylon rip-stop fabric and features a silicone finish and polyurethane coating to add to its’ durability. The Travel Pack can haul a full days worth of gear when needed or it can be tucked away into its’ own zippered compartment when not in use. Once in the zippered compartment, the Lightweight Travel Pack measures 8”x6”x2” (length, width, depth). This tiny package can get stowed in your main pack or luggage without taking up much space or adding weight, yet be ready for action in under 15 seconds.

photo

The Lightweight Travel Pack features a large main compartment with a cinch draw-cord to help keep your gear secure inside. There is also a small zippered pocket located at the top of the main compartment; this pocket was great to stash smaller items, such as your camera, sunscreen, etc. and the pocket features a carabiner too. This pocket doubles as your stash compartment when inverted. The lid of the pack also supplies a decent amount of storage space and could accommodate my lighter items on our recent European trip; hats, gloves, and my lightweight rain shell for easy access. My only complaint with the lid is that if the pack is not fully loaded, the lid—despite being cinched down all the way with the clip supplied to the main body of the pack, would flop from side to side while walking or running. Not a huge deal, but when sprinting through an airport for a connection I did keep checking to ensure that the pack had not burst open. The pack also features two mesh compartments for your water bottle, or in my case coffee mug. The pockets are deeper then they appear, as they continue well below the mesh opening.

image

Overall, Patagonia’s Lightweight Travel Pack was an excellent addition to my travel go to’s as it can be used for a ski day in the Alps, a day on the trails, or to carry lunch, snacks, or camera equipment while site seeing. The pack is available in 3 colors, Paintbrush Red, Black, and Larimar Blue. Patagonia also makes a messenger, tote, and sling styled bags, composed of the same materials if you are looking for something that is not in the form of a daypack. Right off the bat, let’s clear a couple of things up. Yes, a hip pack (or waist pack) is the 2019 term for a fanny pack. And, yes, fanny packs—sorry, hip packs—are back.

That’s not to say you still won’t feel dorky while rocking one, but you can at least rest easy in the fact that you’re trendy and everyone side-eyeing your waist is not.

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack

Plus, waist packs are just so convenient. Including the Patagonia Lightweight Mini Travel Hip Pack, which is an ideal size for when you need the essentials and your pocket just can’t cut it. And it folds into its own pocket, which is a great feature for traveling.

We’ve been testing Patagonia’s Mini Hip Pack for two weeks now around southeast Michigan and, despite the sudden urge to listen to Nirvana, we’ve been loving it. (Also, the Nirvana thing is definitely not a downside…)

Our Experience

We’ve been testing this Patagonia fanny pack in black (how unlike us, right?), but as of this review, it’s also available in such fun colorways as Tasmanian Teal/Peach Sherbet, Balkan Blue, and more. So you can be as subtle or in-your-face about your newfound love of waist packs as you want.

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack in Detroit

Because the Patagonia brand is so closely tied to the outdoors, the pack naturally has a pretty outdoorsy aesthetic. Take the hip pack with you on a quick jaunt to the top of Mount Rainier and no one will bat an eye (unless it’s all you take with you). And because there’s not a lot going on styling-wise, it doesn’t feel out of place in a city either. We’ve been liking this simple aesthetic—too much detailing on such a small pack just doesn’t work (in our opinion).

While mini, the pack is still large enough to hold all of your essentials easily, although the opening is smaller than the pocket itself, so you will have to do some finagling. You can toss your phone, keys, wallet, headphones, maybe even a snack or two, and your passport in there.

Patagonia Lightweight Travel Mini Hip Pack Full

However, we have found that the more you stuff the pack, the harder it will be to access said stuff. Just because you can shove a ton of things in there, doesn’t mean you should.

In fact, we’ve found a huge upside to this mini hip pack is how it encourages you to pack thoughtfully. Instead of lugging a full daypack’s worth of gear with you while you roam the streets of wherever, you can figure out what you really need and only take those things. (And your back will thank you!)

There’s also not much in terms of internal organization—with two external pockets and a zippered security pocket inside the main one, which doubles as the hip pack’s stuff sack. We think Patagonia has done a nice job finding the sweet spot between too much organization and too little.

Patagonia Lightweight Travel Mini Hip Pack Secret Pocket

The front pocket is ideal for items you want to access quickly—like your phone—and the main pocket works for everything else. The main pocket also has a plastic key leash, although we didn’t find ourselves utilizing it too frequently, and the security pocket—which is a great place to stash valuables like your passport.

Speaking of security, fanny packs get a lot of praise for being a safe way to carry your valuables while traveling. It’s partially true as the Patagonia waist pack, and thus your stuff, sits directly against your body and in your line of sight. However, Patagonia’s fanny pack attaches to your waist via a buckle that sits on your lower back. It is possible that someone could unbuckle your waist pack and run off with it somewhat easily. So that’s definitely something to keep in mind. And if security is a top priority for you, you might consider a waist pack that has some additional safety features, like a lockable or hidden buckle.

Patagonia Lightweight Travel Mini Hip Pack Lower Back Buckle

On a lighter note, let’s talk about how comfortable it feels to wear this Patagonia fanny pack. It nicely contours to your body and the strap is easy to adjust if you need to tighten or loosen the fit. Where exactly you want to wear it is up to you, although we’ve found it’s slightly more comfortable sitting lower on your hip as opposed to your waist. But you do you.

Patagonia Lightweight Travel Mini Hip Pack On Hip

Either way, you may encounter some shirt-bunching as you clip the hip pack around your body (depending on your shirt). Not a big deal, but we thought we’d mention it so you’re prepared. The back is also nicely padded and there’s some mesh to keep the sweat to a minimum.

Additionally, Patagonia claims you can wear this hip pack over your shoulder, sling style . You can, but it looks like, well, you’re wearing a hip pack as a sling. Compare that to packs like the Peak Design Everyday Sling —which are designed to fit across your body—and you’ll see why we’re not huge fans of this method.

Patagonia Lightweight Travel Mini Hip Pack Sling Carry

A quick side note: While this pack isn’t built for runners, it’s actually not the worst to run with (it doesn’t move around too much), so if you want to keep up your jogging habit while abroad but don’t want to bring an additional running vest, this hip pack will do.

Or, if you’re not a runner but are a chronically-late-person, you’ll be nice and comfortable sprinting through airport terminals with this pack securely fastened to your hip.

Noteworthy Features

Patagonia Lightweight Mini Travel Hip Pack Pocket

Probably the most noteworthy feature of the Patagonia Lightweight Mini Travel Hip Pack is its ability to fold into its own pocket. We love the design of this feature—it’s easy to use and very convenient for travel. Plus, the hip pack’s name doesn’t lie. The pack weighs almost nothing (3.2 ounces if you want to get technical about it), which is a great feature in itself. When you couple that low weight with its compressibility, it means you can toss this thing in a backpack and barely tell it’s there.

Patagonia Lightweight Travel Mini Hip Pack Material

And, as per usual for Patagonia, this fanny pack is made with some durable stuff. The body is made of a 70D nylon ripstop with an additional polyurethane coating, and the base is reinforced with a 210D nylon ripstop—also with a polyurethane coating. Nylon ripstop, as you may have guessed by the name, is a fabric that’s specially woven to prevent tearing. And that polyurethane coating adds some weather resistance.

The zippers are YKK #5 Reverse Coil zippers and have little garages where you can “park” them if your pockets are fully zipped. And just to clarify, YKK is a company that owns a huge percentage of the zipper market, and for a good reason—their zippers are built to last. The Reverse Coil bit means the zipper teeth are internally, rather than externally facing, further protecting your stuff—and the zipper itself—from the elements.

Patagonia Lightweight Travel Mini Hip Pack Strap

Finally, you’ve got the herringbone-webbing strap, which is equally durable and comfortable, as well as a buckle from Nifco, which is a company known for its high-quality products. And, of course, you’ve got some strap keepers as well to keep those straps nice and tidy.

Usage Timeline

  • At 1L it’s just big enough to hold the essentials.
  • Available in a range of different colors.

Love this pack!

I picked one up so that I could have a light weight rope bag & essentials carry bag, that top loaded for a windy multi pitch climb I hadn't prepared for. Ran to an REI and this seemed light weight and the price was right. I thought it wouldn't be that durable and that it was more of an emergency, one time use option. Boy was I wrong!! It's super light weight (almost weightless), can fit a harness, shoes & quickdraws when carrying a rope separate (and is strong enough). It square & holds a good shape even when not filled all the way (much better than a flash pack of any sorts!). I found myself using it all the time for good weather, quick single pitch days when I didn't want to carry much. What's nice is that it completely rolls up when empty :) Not the most comfortable for longer days with lots of hiking (I'd grab another bag for that) but soooo glad I picked it up!

Reliable daily bag for 7 years now

I’ve used and beaten up this bag nearly every day for the past 7 years and it has never let me down. I wish it was a little more water proof but other than that, it’s nearly perfect.

Very versatile carry tote/backpack

This ultralight Tote/backpack is made of recycled plastic and is super versatile. It packs very nicely into it's inside pocket. It greatly exceeded my expectations. Buy it!!!!

Love this tote!

Fantastic tote! Great size for running errands or if you just don't want to carry a bunch of things loose in your hands. Great pockets, love that it can be a backpack and a tote back. Strongly recommend this pack!

NYC backpack

Perfect backpack for where I live in nyc. I’m always commuting and need my hands free so a backpack works better than a purse for me. I got the black color and it’s the most awesome shade of deep jet black — really living up to its name! (Black hole) I love the material. The lightweight Nylon is great and doesn’t add any extra weight. I use it for picking up some groceries and whatever else. Thanks backcountry!!

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

things to do in Moscow in one week

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Perfect itinerary for spending a week in Moscow! So many places to visit and it looks like you had a wonderful time. I would love to climb that tower. The views I am sure must have been amazing!

I was lucky enough to see the skyline of Moscow from this TV Tower and it is definitely mind-blowing.

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

Wondering what to pack for Russia in the summer? Our Russian-born author shares her tips and tricks on dressing for both day and night!

What to Pack for Russia: Summer

Written By: Julia K.

If you made it to Moscow, Russia during summer, you’re in luck. Moscow offers a plethora of beautifully landscaped parks and festivals all over the city. If you want to know how to visit all those locations in style, continue reading!

Traveling to Russia in the winter? Read this post instead.

Packing List for Russia in the Summer

Summers in Moscow can get hot. It can range between 77-86°F (25-30°C) and sometimes be humid. Dressing appropriately, comfortably, and accordingly will save you a headache and make your stay more enjoyable.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a travel capsule wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Must-see attractions during summer include many parks, such as VDNH, Chistyye Prudy, Izmaylovo and Izmailovsky Park, and of course the famous antique and flea market called Vernisaj.

Start by reading these general tips on packing for summer travel:

  • Capsule Wardrobe for Summer
  • Top Summer Dresses Perfect for Europe
  • Lightweight Jackets for Easy Layers
  • Best Walking Shoes for Europe’s Cobblestone Streets

One can see a range of different styles in Moscow. After all, it’s a hub for many travelers, businesspeople, and locals. However, if you’d like to be perceived and treated in a particular way, then pay attention to the way you dress.

You may attract unwanted attention if you wear clothing that’s inappropriate to the local culture. Observe what people are wearing around you and these tips should help point you in the right direction before you arrive.

The following suggestions are based on the perspective of a local born in Moscow.

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to any of the parks:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Blouse | Shorts |  Hat | Scarf | Watch | Sunglasses | Purse  | Flats

  • Flat sandals or flats
  • Dressy shorts or a midi skirt (no shorter than one hand above the knee)
  • A nice blouse
  • A crossbody bag
  • A hat and sunglasses
  • Jewelry and a watch

If you’ll be staying out all day into the evening, wearing layers is key. Pack a shawl or a cardigan for romantic walks next to the Moscow River.

Pro tip: Take a mosquito repellent just in case and apply sun protection wherever you go.

What not to wear:

As a local, I wouldn’t recommend wearing flip flops, short shorts, mini skirts, bright makeup, or see-through clothes. It’s a good idea not to show cleavage, unless you have a layer underneath. Choose understated jewelry instead of flashier pieces.

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to a festival:

Dress |  Hat  | Umbrella |  Crossbody  | Earrings | Lipstick | Watch |  Flats

  • A nice day dress
  • A pair of comfortable wedges
  • A light purse
  • A scarf for the evening
  • Light jewelry
  • Light makeup (bronzer, mascara, lip gloss, blush)
Find out the top ten wedges readers recommend!

Travel shoes:

Flats  |  Wedge |  Oxfords

If you’d like to explore Moscow, then comfortable shoes are a must!

The summer weather is pretty predictable. Based on that, you’ll need three pairs of shoes. One to explore the city, a pair to wear in your hotel room, and something for going out. Think: wedges, dressy flats with a thick sole, and flip-flops.

What are the most comfy shoes? These experts are giving you the inside scoop on their twenty-one top picks. Take a look !

What to pack for Russia if you’re going to enjoy dinner and a ferry ride along the Moscow River:

Top  | Skirt | Jacket |  Sunglasses  |  Wedge  |  Lipstick  | Clutch | Earrings

  • A midi skirt or cropped dressy pants
  • A dressy blouse
  • Comfortable but dressy shoes
  • An evening clutch
  • A jacket for any unexpected chill

Make sure your clothes are clean and neat, and that there are no flashy colors or over-the-top prints.

Summer is also a perfect opportunity to take a short trip to St. Petersburg, one of the most iconic cities in the world. It’s full of heritage, architecture, galleries, and art, even for the most discerning travelers and art lovers. You can get there by train or plane. Whichever is in your budget, pack with comfort and style in mind!

Whether you’re spending a summer abroad or finally taking that vacation you’ve been dreaming about for years, TFG has the ultimate long term packing list for your European adventures !

What to pack for Russia for a 3-day getaway to St. Petersburg:

what-to-pack-for-russia

Dress  |  Earrings | Clutch | Wedge |  Cardigan  | Tank  | Pants |  Flats | Purse  |  Blouse  | Pants | Jacket |  Scarf | Hat | Flats

  • Day/night dress that’s easy to dress up or down with some jewelry
  • Comfortable flats to explore the city in
  • A change of clothes that covers your knees and shoulders
  • A scarf and sweater for when the city becomes cooler during the evening
  • A windbreaker
  • Everyday jewelry
  • A hat to protect yourself from the sun
  • A small umbrella
These are the most cute and comfortable ballet flats for travel!

Some museums and churches might refuse service or admission if shoulders and knees are uncovered. I also recommend avoiding jean cutoffs and tank tops, as they may get unwanted attention.

When entering any religious building modesty should be considered, these tips will help you learn how to pack!

Shopping tips:

Moscow has every single store you could think of! From global luxury brands to everyday wear, it caters to many budgets.

If you want to arrive during sale season, then arrive one to two months before the end of the season. You can pick up European-made goods cheaper than in North America. Good shopping malls include Afimall located in Moscow City (another must see) and Evropeiskii located at Kievsky train station.

I’m traveling to Moscow in five days and was wondering if I should really not wear shorts. I’ve been to Nizhny Novgorod in the summer and Moscow in the winter so I have a few ideas about what to wear, but I thought that shorts wouldn’t be so bad.
