About Wayanad

Renowned for its breathtaking vistas and natural splendour, Wayanad is a distinguished district within the verdant landscapes of Kerala, India. Nestled at elevations ranging from 700 to 2100 meters above sea level, Wayanad boasts attractions such as the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and the historic Edakkal Caves. Aptly termed the “green paradise,” it is nestled amidst the Western Ghats .

The district encompasses three key towns:

• Mananthavady
• Sulthan Bathery

Optimal for exploration between October and May, Wayanad welcomes visitors with pleasant temperatures and agreeable weather conditions during this period. However, the monsoon season from June to August blankets the region in continuous rainfall.

Wayanad offers abundant hiking trails and points of interest and beckons adventurers to immerse themselves in its natural wonders. With numerous attractions, a recommended 4 to 5 days duration allows for a comprehensive region discovery. Even after two visits, Wayanad continues to unveil its treasures, indicating the depth of its allure and the richness of its offerings.

How to Get to Wayanad?

The closest domestic and international airport serving Wayanad is located in Calicut/Kozhikode, approximately 90 kilometres away. Calicut International Airport is a hub for various airlines, including Air India and Indigo . Travellers can easily arrange for a taxi from the airport to reach Wayanad.

Wayanad enjoys good connectivity with various towns and cities, although it’s important to note that some roads, particularly during rainfall, may be narrow and less maintained.

• Calicut to Wayanad: Approximately 85 kilometres.
• Bangalore to Wayanad: Approximately 290 kilometres.
• Mysore to Wayanad: Approximately 160 kilometres.

By Public Transport

• Train – The nearest train station serving Wayanad is located in Calicut/Kozhikode, approximately 85 kilometres away. For the latest information on train routes and availability, please visit the IRCTC website.
• Bus – Wayanad’s primary bus stop is in Kalpetta, a town within the Wayanad district. For bus reservations, refer to the Redbus website.

Transportation Within Wayanad

The most convenient mode of transportation within Wayanad is by car, offering both affordability and ease, especially if you have your vehicle. However, during my second visit to Wayanad, I found myself without my car, necessitating reliance on taxi or auto-rickshaw services. While public buses are available, their schedules are not widely published, posing challenges due to language barriers.

It’s essential to exercise caution when dealing with auto-rickshaw drivers, as some may attempt to overcharge. On my initial night in Kalpetta, I hired an auto-rickshaw to reach the Windflower Resort and Spa, only to discover that I had been charged INR 800, significantly more than the standard fare of around INR 250.

Fortunately, I encountered another auto-rickshaw driver, Jason, who provided exceptional service. Jason was fair in pricing and attentive throughout our journey together, ensuring a pleasant experience despite the earlier setback.

Things To Do in Wayanad

Please note: Some attractions may be temporarily closed due to road conditions or heavy rains. Before visiting these sites, verifying their status with residents or staff at your accommodations is advisable.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Situated 21 kilometres from Kalpetta, the Banasura Sagar Dam is India’s largest earthen dam and the second largest in Asia. It spans the Karamanathodu tributary of the Kabini River and is also called the Kuttiyadi Augmentation Main Earthen Dam. The dam creates a reservoir with a series of picturesque islands rising to 38.5 meters and stretching over 685 meters.

• Accessing the dam requires guests to embark on a jeep ride, with the cost of the round trip amounting to INR 20.

Beecraft Honey Museum and Factory

Despite its modest size, the Beecraft Honey Museum is one of the most captivating museums I’ve ever explored. Upon arrival, visitors are warmly greeted by a guide leading them through fascinating information about bees and honey. From the various types of honey to the roles of different bees within a colony, the tour delves into intriguing topics, such as the reasons behind the changing colours of honey over time.

Of particular interest is the insight provided into the intricate workings of bee colonies, including the hierarchy featuring the queen bee and the worker bees and the meticulous process of selecting the queen bee. Witnessing the systematic nature of this process left me genuinely shocked.

• The museum welcomes visitors daily from 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM, offering an enriching experience.
• Admission is priced at INR 50 per person, which includes a delightful honey-tasting session, adding a sweet touch to the educational journey.

The Chain Tree is a prominent tourist attraction steeped in local folklore and history. Legend has it that it is linked to a tribal figure named Karinthandan, a member of the Paniyas tribe. Karinthandan aided the British in navigating the mountainous terrain, only to meet a tragic end at their hands. His assistance was crucial in unveiling routes through the dense rainforests, knowledge exclusive to the local inhabitants.

Following Karinthandan’s demise, eerie incidents plagued travellers and visitors along these routes, with frequent accidents and wild animal encounters. To quell these disturbances, a priest undertook extensive efforts to bind Karinthandan’s spirit to a Ficus tree using a chain.

• Entrance to the Chain Tree site is free of charge, allowing visitors to delve into its captivating tale without any financial barrier.

Chembra Peak

Standing proudly at 2100 meters, Chembra Peak reigns as the loftiest mountain in Wayanad, drawing adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Renowned for its captivating flora and fauna, this peak holds a special allure for trekkers seeking awe-inspiring experiences. Along the trail lies a picturesque heart-shaped lake known as Hridayasarassu, adding to the enchantment of the journey.

The trek to Chembra Peak spans approximately 3 kilometres one way from the starting point. It’s essential to commence the trek early and reach the starting point by 7 AM, as only 200 individuals are permitted to trek each day.

Entry to the trekking trail requires a nominal fee of INR 250 per person for joining a group or INR 850 for solo trekkers or groups, payable to the forest officials at the trail’s outset.

For optimal trekking conditions, plan your expedition between September and February. It’s advisable to avoid the monsoon season from June to August, as the trail can become perilously slippery.

Edakkal Caves

Situated 25 kilometres from Kalpetta, the Edakkal Caves are a testament to ancient history, boasting pictorial writings dating back to at least 6000 BCE, attributed to the Neolithic era. These two natural caves offer intriguing insights into the lives of early civilizations, with the youngest paintings hinting at a potential link to the Indus Valley Civilization. Evidence suggests that the caves were inhabited at various points throughout history.

• Open daily from 9 AM to 2 PM, the Edakkal Caves beckon visitors to explore their mysteries.
• Admission to this historical site is priced at a modest INR 20 per person, offering a fascinating glimpse into humanity’s past.

Jain Temple (Mirror Temple)

The Glass or Mirror Jain Temple , dedicated to Parswanatha Swamy, the third Thirthankara of Jains, is a magnificent architectural marvel in Wayanad. Located approximately 20 kilometres from Kalpetta, this temple exudes beauty and serenity.

• Open daily from 6 AM to 4 PM; the Glass or Mirror Jain Temple invites visitors to immerse themselves in its tranquil ambience and admire its exquisite craftsmanship.
• Admission to this spiritual sanctuary is free of charge, welcoming all who seek solace and enlightenment.

Karlad Lake

Karlad Lake, nestled approximately 8 kilometres from Vythiri and a mere 3 kilometres from the iconic Banasura Sagar Dam, is a serene freshwater oasis, ranking as the second largest lake after Pookode Lake.

• Welcoming visitors daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, Karlad Lake offers many recreational opportunities amidst its picturesque surroundings.
• Entry to the lake is priced at INR 40 per adult, granting access to many activities, including boating, zip-lining, zorbing, kayaking, and more.

Kuruva Island

Encompassing an expansive 950 acres of land, Kuruvadweep, also known as Kuruva Island, is a pristine river delta teeming with diverse flora and fauna. This protected sanctuary is located approximately 40 kilometres from Kalpetta and is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

• Open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, Kuruvadweep beckons visitors to explore its natural wonders.
• Admission to the island is priced at INR 80 per adult, providing access to many activities, including enchanting nature walks, serene boating experiences, and exhilarating rafting adventures.

One must embark on a scenic 2-kilometre trek through the lush surroundings to reach the falls. Despite being situated in South Wayanad, it’s closer to Trivandrum city.

• Meenmutty Waterfalls welcomes guests daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, providing ample time to soak in its beauty.
• Admission to the falls is priced at INR 30 per adult, offering an affordable opportunity to experience nature’s grandeur.

Neelimala Viewpoint

Providing breathtaking vistas of Meenmutti Waterfalls and the surrounding valleys, the Neelimala viewpoint is a captivating vantage point and a must-visit destination in Wayanad.

• Open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM, the viewpoint offers ample opportunities to admire the region’s natural splendour.
• Access to the viewpoint is exclusively via jeep rides, each priced at INR 500 per jeep.

Pookade Lake

Pookode Lake, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Wayanad district, is a serene freshwater reservoir surrounded by verdant forests. Situated approximately 15 kilometres from Kalpetta and 3 kilometres from Vythiri, this tranquil lake sits 770 meters above sea level. Boasting commercial development, Pookode Lake offers a range of activities, such as boating and kayaking, for visitors to enjoy.

• Operating hours: Daily from 9 AM to 5 PM.
• The entrance fee for Indian nationals is INR 40.
• INR 300 for a 2-member boat.
• INR 450 for a 4-member boat.

Seetha Lava Kusha Temple

Situated in Pulpally, the Seetha Lava Kusha Temple is a revered Hindu sanctuary surrounded by lush greenery in Wayanad. The temple holds deep spiritual significance and is dedicated to the deities Goddess Seetha, Lava, and Kusha. “Seetha” etymologically refers to soil or earth, symbolizing the divine connection to the land.

Constructed by Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, a revered warrior of his era, the temple embodies rich historical and cultural heritage. Legend has it that Tipu Sultan , the ruler of Mysore, once plotted to destroy the temple. However, Goddess Seetha intervened, shrouding the area in darkness at noon, causing Tipu Sultan and his troops to retreat without causing harm to the sacred site.

Adding to its mystique, the temple and its surroundings are notably devoid of the common leeches found in other areas of Wayanad, a phenomenon shrouded in mystery and folklore. The Seetha Lava Kusha Temple is a testament to faith and divine protection, drawing devotees and visitors seeking solace and spiritual enlightenment.

Soochipara Waterfalls

The Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, also known as Soochipara Falls, is a mesmerizing three-tiered cascade nestled in the picturesque setting of Vellarimala near Kalpetta. Encircled by lush deciduous forests, this natural wonder captivates visitors with its serene beauty.

Offering uninterrupted views of Chembra Peak from the rooms, it provided a serene and picturesque setting. The accommodations were comfortable, and the staff were amiable and accommodating, adding to the pleasant experience. Despite its simplicity, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Woodrose Resort .

The resort offers various cottage options, with the deluxe room where I stayed priced at INR 4,040. Immerse yourself in The Woodrose Resort ‘s peaceful ambience and scenic beauty for a memorable retreat in Wayanad.

Wayanad Tourism And Travel Guide

Wayanad is a scenic little paradise of canopies of Deciduous and Evergreen trees, waterfalls and rolls of tea plantations. Situated at the southernmost tip of the Deccan Plateau, Wayanad is a district in the state of Kerala . It boasts of hilly, mountainous regions, old prehistoric caves, ruins of forts and temples as well as is home to some of the most rare and endangered species.  Reached easily by air with the nearest Airport of Calicut, Wayanad is best visited in its winter months (October-February). To know more about tourism in Wayanad, read on the Wayanad travel guide below. 

How to Reach

Wayanad may be located in the lap of forests and mountains but it is easily accessible by rail, road as well as air.

By Air : Calicut is the nearest airport, 65 km away. It is well connected to most cities of Kerala as well as rest of India .

By Road : The road network is pretty well-developed to Wayanad. State run as well as private buses ply many routes from Kozhikode . Some major cities like Bangalore, Mysore and Chennai are connected to Kozhikode by regular buses.

By Rail : Wayanad does not have its own rail connectivity but is only 110 km away from Kozhikode Railway Station. You can take a taxi, book a car or board a public bus from Kozhikode to Wayanad.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Wayanad has a pleasurable weather all year round but is best visited in winter months between October to February. This time brings cool, chilly breezes and dry skies, perfect for outdoor activities.

Summer (March-May)

The temperatures in summer are not so high, anywhere between 20-30°C. Because of the green cover and waterbodies, Wayanad is not as hot as the rest of the country in summer.

Monsoon (June-October)

Wayanad receives an average rainfall of 300 mm with temperatures varying from 15-25°C. Because of frequent rain, most outdoor activities are unavailable. Therefore it is not advisable for first time travellers to visit during monsoon.

Winter (October- February)

Winter in Wayanad marks the peak of tourist season with temperatures ranging from 10-25°C and cold breezes. There is a rather pleasant nip in the air and outdoor activities are most fun during this time. 

Things to Do

Sightseeing :

Wayanad boasts of some of the best natural sights as it is blessed with lush evergreen forests, rocky waterfalls, rich flora and fauna.  You can visit the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and sight herds of elephants, deer, guars, peafowls and tigers. Sentinel Waterfall offers some great picnic points with an overview of the rolling tea plantations below. There is also Pazhassi Memorial, to witness the history of Veera Pazhassi who fought a guerrilla war against the East India Company. 

Adventure Sports:

Treks up the Ambukuthi Hill are memorable and you can reach Edakkal Caves for more sightseeing. There is also the usual rock climbing and white water rafting at Sentinel Waterfalls. Hiking up the highest peak in Wayanad is another adrenaline rush. For this you can head to the Chembra peak.

Pilgrimage:

With a beautiful mix of churches, mosques, temples and Jain shrines, Wayanad is home to many religions and one spirituality. Nature becomes an unbreakable part of each of these shrines, be it the Pallikunnu Church of Mount Mary or the Thirunelli Temple of Maha Vishnu, Varambetta Mosque or Sulthan Bathery Jain Temple.  You can visit each and find out more about how religion is inspired as well as amalgamated with history, culture and nature of this place.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary Safari:

Take a jeep safari in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. Sight the rare Bengal Tiger, deer, vultures, monkeys, elephants etc. Learn about the native medicinal plants and weeds with healing properties too on your way.

Edakkal Caves:

Home to one of the oldest and most perused petroglyphs, Edakkal is said to be 6000 years old. The images carved on stone walls are those of kings, queens, animals and prehistoric tools. Get your historic nerd glasses on and trek up to this time machine of humankind.

Cycling through Wayanad:

Wayanad has a few adventurous cycling routes for those willing to experience this place like a hermit traveller. Take your helmet and ride down through some pretty tricky bends and rocky curves, through untouched roads in the middle of rolls of tea gardens. You can also cycle across the border to Nilgiri in Tamil Nadu .  A few cycling routes start from Chudale, Kalpetta etc.

Wayanad is THE place to eat authentic Malabar cuisine, made from fresh, simple, local ingredients. Try their fish moilee, a curry prepared in rich coconut milk, mustard seeds and tempered curry leaves. Appams are usually best eaten with chicken stew and to treat your sweet tooth, indulge in some payasam (the kheer of South India ).

The district enjoys a pleasant climate all through the year which might be responsible for its flourishing Wayanad tourism. The year is categorised into four seasons here – chilly climes during December-February, summer during the months of March-May, the south-west monsoon which is characterised by copious rainfall and windy days during June-September and the north-east monsoon during October-November.

If your idea of the perfect vacation is being surrounded by tangles of vivid greenery and heavy rains that bring with it the scent of the earth, then it is recommended you visit between May and October. However, for those who’d like to enjoy the best of Wayanad tourism without getting drenched, the best time to visit is anytime between October and May.

  Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the major highlights of Wayanad tourism is its wildlife, and you’ll find plenty of it in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. It was started in 1973 and became a key part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the first biosphere out of 14 biospheres in India. Comprising two major sections named Muthanga and Tholpetty, the sanctuary shares borders with other regions famous for their biodiversity. 

  Both Muthanga and Tholpetty are closed from mid-March to mid-April but are open during Wayanad’s soaking monsoons. The drive towards Muthanga and Tholpetty is beautiful with a wall of green on both sides. Paddy fields, plantations and thickets of bamboo trees and ginger bushes keep pace with you.

Wayanad tourism offers a two-hour jeep safari to get your fill of the awe-striking flora and fauna here. Ride under the dappled sunshine of the deciduous forest with patches of evergreen forests alive with the calls of around 216 bird species including peacocks, babblers, owls, cuckoos and black woodpeckers to mention a few. You’ll spot bamboo groves and trees like teak, rosewood, eucalyptus and silver oak plantations. 

Book a safari at one of the two entrances to gape at langurs, bison, bonnet macaques, sambar, wild boars and herds of majestic elephants in their habitat. If luck favours you then you might be able to spot a fiery-eyed tiger or a graceful leopard in the forest. Snakes and monitor lizards slither in the undergrowth and crocodiles and termite hill geckos lurk in the shadows.

Banasura Dam

The largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in Asia, the Banasura Dam features prominently in the list of Wayanad tourist spots. 

It is made of massive stones and boulders and is built along the Karamanathody river. This quaint dam has occupied pride of place in Wayanad tourism. The dam helps provide for irrigation, drinking water and electricity to the surrounding areas. The climb is well worth the effort when you arrive at the top of the dam to look down at the gleaming expanse of the reservoir below. 

  The water is dotted with small, verdant islands which are home to elephants. The monsoon lends the view an ethereal touch. You can hike up to the Banasura Peak to cross tinkling streams, waterfalls and lush greenery. Look down upon the Banasura lake framed by the Banasura hills which owe their name to the son of a famous ruler, King Mahabali. 

  Wayanad tourism has built a children’s park with tree swings to keep them busy. There are also some food stalls you can browse through to load up on snacks to go with the sensational view. Go speed boating on the lake to feel the wind in your hair and your adrenaline coursing or take a pedal boat to relax and enjoy the sight around you.

Kuruva Dweep 

This river delta is a hidden gem of Wayanad tourism and comprises a cluster of islands all carpeted with greenery and spread over 950 acres. The island is inhabited with exotic species of birds and plants such as rarely found orchids and herbs. Surrounded by streams, Wayanad tourism has come up with bamboo rafts and fibreglass boats that glide across the water for ten minutes until you reach the thickly forested islands. Take the rafts around to explore all the islands, each more charming than the last. Delve deeper inside the island to come upon bridges made of bamboo and towering trees which are rare and wizened with age. Stroll through the pristine island to soak in its beauty or trek around to cover more ground. This ecologically delicate island is well protected by Wayanad tourism and hence no parties or picnics are allowed here.

  You must get passes from the Forest Department to visit the island which are readily available at the counter. Visits to the cluster of islands are restricted during the monsoon. They remain open during October to May and you can feast your eyes on this beauty at a nominal fee. Just make sure you get here between 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.

Thirunelli temple 

  This attraction has to have a spot in your Wayanad tourist places list. The Thirunelli temple with ancient temple architecture stands pretty beside the forest-covered Brahmagiri hills in Wayanad and paints a pretty picture, making it one of the gems in the crown of Wayanad tourism. 

  Known as Wayanad tourism’s ‘Kashi of the south’, the temple was built around an interesting legend. The story goes that while going around the world, Lord Brahma came upon the Brahmagiri hills which left him smitten with their beauty. He descended to explore the place and had a vision of Lord Vishnu under an amla tree. According to Wayanad tourism, Lord Vishnu’s three incarnations namely Parasuram, Ram and Krishna have visited the temple on separate occasions during different ages. Lord Vishnu, in turn, promised that the water around the temple could wash away all earthly sins and gave birth to the stream of Papanashini (destroyer of sins). 

  The temple is imbued with an air of devotion and soul-soothing serenity, surrounded as it is with lush forests. All rituals of the temple are performed on the banks of the Papanashini stream which is believed to have medicinal properties. A sacred pond lies next to the stream where earlier five streams would pour in. Fringed by dense bushes, the pond holds in the middle a stone slab with the foot imprint of Lord Vishnu. These religious elements make the temple a hotspot for Hindu pilgrims in Wayanad tourism.

There is a holy rock in the temple where people pray for peace for their ancestors. On the western side of the temple lies the cave temple Gunnika which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Sit down by the temple to stare at the grand pillars and stone carvings against the mesmerising backdrop of mist-covered peaks to sense the tranquillity seeping through your being.

Trek to a heart-shaped lake

Lace on your trekking shoes to hike to Wayanad tourism’s highest attraction, the Chembra Peak. The climb is well worth it when you come across a stunning heart-shaped lake called Hridaya Saras set on rolling green meadows. Naturally shaped into a heart, the lake has a glassy surface and is so clear that you can see all the way to the bottom. 

The climb itself is a treat. Starting off, you’ll be treated to green plantations and rolling hills which are one of the delights of Wayanad tourism. As the climb steepens and your legs start protesting, you’ll be compensated with valleys opening up before you to give you sweeping views of the panoramic hills and countless treetops. There is a five-kilometre hike to get to the watchtower and a three and a half kilometre trek through dappled forests and grasslands to get to the summit. The trek is spread over five hills; sing a cheery tune along with the birds in the forest to break through the foliage and look at the unique lake. 

Wayanad tourism has made permits available for the trek at the VSS office, which is two kilometres away from the town of Meppadi. You’ll need a ticket which is valid for a group of ten people and comes with a guide who will meet you on the observation deck. The only downside is that a single person, without a group, will still have to shell out the same amount regardless of whether he’s travelling with a group or not.

Pakshipathalam

If you’re a hardcore trekker who’d like something more challenging then head out for this 7 km-trek which has large boulders studded deep in the forest for clambering. The lush forest has deciduous trees through which sunlight streams in shafts. With numerous kinds of birds chittering in the trees, bring your binoculars along for a good session of birdwatching.

The Chain Tree is a lesser-known attraction of Wayanad tourism and is set in the mist-shrouded ghats of Lakkidi. The Britisher wanted to grab credit for the route and killed the tribal. Since then, the outraged ghost of the tribal started haunting passerby who pleaded with a priest to rid them of the spirit. The place is thus named Sultan’s Battery or Sultan Bathery. The Jain temple still exists today and helps tell the fascinating story.

One of the folktales details that these caves were formed by arrows of Luv and Kush, the brave sons of Lord Rama and Devi Sita.

Wayanad is a beautiful mountainous district in the Malabar region of Kerala located on the western ghats. It is sparsely populated and rural, with most of the land area covered with forests. The district abounds with hill stations , wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, dams, tea estates and trekking opportunities, with temples and heritage locations thrown in for good measure. Spread over 2,132 square kilometres, the district lies at an elevation of 700 metres, with its highest point reaching 2,100.

Wayanad borders Karnataka to its east and Tamil Nadu to its southeast. The districts of Kozhikode , Kannur and Malappuram form its eastern, northern and southern borders respectively. Wayanad is a popular weekend destination for travellers from Bangalore and Mysore .

Understand [ edit ]

Wayanad is the best place in Kerala for hill tourism. Most parts of the district are protected forest and the remaining area is lush green cultivation with a relatively thinner population.

Urbanization has reached only 4% of the district. The altitude reaches up to 2,100 ft in some parts of Wayanad.

History [ edit ]

Wayanad gets its name from Vayal Naadu, or "The land of the paddy fields". It shares much of its history with Karnataka, having been a possession of many of the dynasties that ruled that state, including the Kadambas, the Chalukyas and the Hoysalas. This history accounts for the existence of Jain temples in this region, though Jainism has a negligible presence in modern Kerala.

In the 18th century, the region of Wayanad was at the centre of a tripartite conflict between Hyder Ali (and later his son Tipu Sultan), Pazhassi Raja, a ruler of the kingdom of Kottayam , and the British. Wayanad changed hands multiple times. When it was with Tipu, he stationed his artillery battery in the village we now know as Sultan Bathery. After Tipu was defeated and killed by the British, Pazhassi Raja rebelled against the British over the status of Wayanad that ultimately resulted in the killing of the Raja, whose tomb can still be seen in the district.

Wayanad finally came under the British who made it part of the Malabar district of the Madras Province. After independence, Madras province became Madras state. When the states were reorganized on linguistic lines, Wayanad became part of Kerala due to the prominence of its Malayali speaking population

Talk [ edit ]

Malayalam is the most commonly spoken language. English is understood by about half the people, but most lack conversational fluency, so you may not get a reply. According to Wikipedia, there is a Kannada-speaking population in Wayanad, but Kannada is not understood widely.

Get in [ edit ]

The district has neither an airport nor railway lines, so the only way to get in is by road. The nearest airport and railway stations are located at Kozhikode , around 100km away. Bangalore and Mysore are the other two nearby cities with airports, Of the two, Bangalore is the more realistic option as there are few flights to Mysore at the moment.

Driving in from Karnataka via Mysore or Madikeri is easier than from other districts of Kerala, Access from Kerala is difficult because of the mountain passes or 'ghat roads'.

Buses are available from Kozhikode and Mysore .

Night traffic is banned towards Mysore, Bangalore side. However, night traffic is allowed through Mananthavady .

• Thalassery-Kuthuparamba-Nedumpoyil-Periya-Boystown-Mananthavady. 82 km

Get around [ edit ]

• Autorikshaws charge ₹15.00 per km
• Buses charge only ₹.00 for three km.
• Walking is impossible as numerous noisy motorcycles pester you even in village roads.

KSRTC buses are available to longer distances.

• bus stations in Wayanad tend to disappoint you with the shortage of buses and no facility for sitting. But the KSRTC bus station at Sultan Battery has good connections to places inside Wayanad or outside Wayanad.
• Cars can be rented for as cheap as ₹1800 a day with a driver. The rate is even cheaper if you rent without a driver.

You can drink coffee at this bus station, but any snacks purchased will be immediately snatched by the ubiquitous monkey groups.

Eat [ edit ]

Kerala food is available in restaurants. European food is available in resorts and home stays only.

Bamboo rice (called Mulayari by locals) can be found in Wayanad. These are seeds of the Bamboo plant, richer in protein than rice and wheat, but tasting like rice. Bamboo rice payasam stalls can be spotted near Edakkal caves walkway. Bamboo is said to yield seeds after a long span, so it is said that harvesting bamboo rice is a 'once-in-a-lifetime' experience.

Home-made chocolates and local Wayanad tea and coffee are also sold in many places. Shops near Edakkal caves offer many options such as spiced versions.

Drink [ edit ]

Beer and wine are easily available. Stronger drinks are prohibited. Kambalakkad though does not have beer- you'd have to get it from Kalpetta or a neighboring town.

Sleep [ edit ]

Lodges in Wayanad have the cheapest tariff compared to other parts of Kerala. Resorts and home stays are expensive options. Accommodation below ₹500 per night are available in Kalpetta and Sultan Bathery towns. Mananthavady is even cheaper. Resorts and homestays charge between ₹2,000 and ₹4,000 per night. They can also arrange tours and trips.

Stay safe [ edit ]

• The eastern hills of Kerala are vulnerable to attacks from an Indian communist group called Maoists. In early 2015, they attacked the ticket counter of Silent Valley National Park, Mukkali. As the Maoists are armed and dangerous, be careful when you trek in lonely areas.
• Leeches are common in the hills. Carry some table salt to dislodge the leeches.
• Monkeys can be a nuisance, especially at places like Lakkidi viewpoint. Be careful and keep your car windows closed, and food items hidden. Try to keep a wooden stick with you in order to scare monkeys away.

4 day Wayanad itinerary | Wayanad travel guide

I’ve visited Kerala five times, but this was my first trip to the tea plantations region of Kerala. We were visiting Wayanad in the summer to escape the city heat. Wayanad had great weather, cool and pleasant, to soak in the beauty of the tea gardens. But that’s not all – there was more we did! Bookmark this 4-day Wayanad itinerary on how we spent our time there.

Day 1 Wayanad itinerary: Sprawling tea plantations in Vythiri

On our first day, after checking in, we kept it light and easy with a short hike around our homestay at the foothills of Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. We walked past banana, guava and wild coffee plantations and followed the marks left by an elephant wandering on this side of the jungle the previous night.

After lunch, we took a Thar jeep ride to venture deeper into the rural land and discovered endless tea plantations that stretched as far as our eyes could see. The lush green carpets of tea leaves were a breath-taking sight, and we couldn’t resist prancing around the tea gardens, spending hours here. A little ahead, we stumbled upon an abandoned British planter’s bungalow, its weathered walls whispering tales of a bygone era. As the day drew to a close, we returned to our homestay to a lovely homecooked meal of Prawns stew with appam.

Day 2 Wayanad itinerary: An Adventure-day at 900 Kandi

From Vythiri, we checked out, towards Sulthan Bathery in the South Wayanad district. Along the way, we made a stop at 900 Kandi. The plan was to take the rugged jeep ride to reach the glass bridge or skywalk at the top of the hill. While the jeep ride was thrilling (and neck-breaking), the glass skywalk was underwhelming, overcrowded and worth skipping.

From there, we checked into our hotel in Sulthan Bathery after a two hour drive and rested the night.

Day 3 Wayanad itinerary: Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary and Edakkal Caves

On this day, there was a mix of history and wildlife. We booked ourselves on the morning jeep safari inside the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (also Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary). This region shares the forest with Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai and Karnataka’s Bandipur Sanctuary, making it an ideal place to spot Asian Elephants in the wild.

Next, we headed to Edakkal caves. Perched on Ambukuthi Hills, these caves offer a fascinating glimpse into a Neolithic settlement. It reminded me of Yana Caves in North Karnataka. Edakkal can be crowded on weekends, which may not be a great experience to immerse yourself in the history of this place. Also, prepare to climb some stairs to reach the caves.

Day 4 Wayanad itinerary: Ziplining through tea plantations, Banasura Dam and Karlad Lake

On the last day, after checking out from our hotel, we utilized our time to do a few more activities as we had the rental car to carry our luggage.

We started with Karlad Lake, which was okay. Instead, you should check out Pookode Lake, which is larger and better. There is no need to visit both lakes.

Next, we visited the Banasura Dam – the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia. The dam offers a great view of the Karamanathodu tributary of the Kabini River with the Banasura hills in the background.

The best, however, was yet to come! Our last stop was Meppadi, where we signed up for ziplining in Wayanad’s tea gardens. It was a great way to witness this stunning landscape from a different perspective and appreciate Wayanad’s natural beauty.

With a touch of sadness, we finally bid farewell to Wayanad, as we headed back to Kozhikode. Since we were continuing towards Gokarna, we drove to the Kozhikode railway station for our overnight train (Gandhidham Express) to Kumta.

Where to stay in Wayanad?

You’ll find some excellent hotels in Wayanad , although they might seem slightly expensive compared to other locations because it is a popular tourist destination, especially during summer.

We stayed at Club Mahindra’s affiliate, Vythiri Village Resort in Wayanad in the north district. You can check out Club Mahindra reviews online before booking!

Another good homestay is Wild Courtyard Vythiri . It offers some great views of the Chembra Peak and home-cooked local food.

We also stayed at Thejas Resorts in the Sulthan Bathery area, south of Wayanad district. This area is closer to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Edakkal Caves. Thejas was a beautiful boutique hotel with olden Kerala-style architecture and a buffet breakfast fit for a king. It is centrally located in the heart of the city and yet away from the bustle.

Local food to try in Wayanad

We enjoyed the food in Wayanad – from puttu and kadala curry to appam and prawn stew, idli and dosas. We also ate Meen (fish) biryani and beef parotta at a local restaurant in Kalpetta.

I also highly recommend trying Chatti Choru – a Wayanad-style rice pot with fish and meat gravies, and pappadum.

You should also definitely visit Wilton Restaurant in Sulthan Bathery or Lakkidi – we ate some excellent rabbit pepper fry with parotta. This place is quite popular as personalities like Mamooty and Rahul Gandhi have visited here.

Lastly, don’t forget to buy some hot tapioca chips to take home.

Top travel tips for Wayanad

• We took a flight from Mumbai to Kozhikode after comparing prices on Skyscanner. You can also check cheaper flight options to Kannur , equidistant from Wayanad – 3 hours drive.
• We took a car rental for the entire duration of our Wayanad trip. It is the best recommended option for travellers since public transport in Wayanad is not easy to navigate, and places to visit are far and scattered. Uber and Ola are not available.

• If you want to keep one location as your base for your stay in Wayanad, I suggest Vythiri because the tea plantations and most activities are in that area, whereas Sulthan Bathery is more developed as a city.
• If you have time on hand, also visit the Honey Museum. We stopped here on our last day – it was very informative. Of course, you can also buy some local honey to take home. Along the way, there’s a tea factory and museum for a quick stop for tea.

• If you have an extra day, visit Kuruvadweep island – a cluster of islets in the Kabini River – it is known for its untouched landscape. Kuruvadweep Island will take an entire day, so account for that time in your itinerary.
• To save money, you can club some sightseeing like Banasura Dam, Karlad Lake and the Honey Museum on your last day before leaving Wayanad, as they are along the same route, instead of making a separate visit.
• Carry comfortable shoes for the small hikes and prancing around the tea gardens.

Kuruva Island in the river Kabani is an ideal spot for picnics and Pakshipathalam and Chembra peak is an ideal spot for adventure tourism and trekking. Pookot fresh water lake is also an ideal spot for entertainment with boating facility, green house and an aquarium. Food & Cuisines

Most of the hill resorts in Wayanad serve excellent south Indian cuisines. Some of the special cuisines are Poricha kootu, Moru kootan, and Avvial and Pal payasam. Tourists can also have north Indian foods, biriyani and Jain cuisine as per their choice. The people of Wayanad are fond of rice and it is their staple food and Rasam, Sāmbhar, Moru koottan and Poricha koottu are some of dishes taken with rice. Some of the Kuruma tribal foods are boiled wild tubers with honey, fried rock crabs, karakkundappam, bamboo rice payasam, fried mushroom, muddha ada and vada, coconut rice, kallu puttu and pollayappam.

Arts & Culture

Wayanad has a good tradition in the field of art and culture and most of the tribal events and folk dances of tribal’s are performed during February and may. Tribal’s art forms performed by Paniyas are Vattakali and Koodiyattam using instruments like thudi and kuzhal, Gadhika by Adiyas, Kolkali by Kurumas and the Nellukuthu pattu by kurichias tribes. Onam is celebrated with great pomp and show during the month of August/September. Other festivals like Maha shivrathri and vishu are also celebrated with pomp and show.

Wayanad is a lush green paradise situated in the Western Ghats of Kerala with a long history dating back to Stone Age. This blessed land is clean, quiet, pristine, hypnotizing and enchanting with a cultural and social understanding still to be discovered. During the ancient times this land was ruled by the rajas of the Veda tribe and later on ruled by the Pazhassi Raja of Kottayam. After the Sreerangapattanam truce Tipu Sultan handed over the entire Malabar region including Wayanad to the British. The British changed the whole geography of this land with plateaus being used to cultivate tea and other cash crops and roads being laid across the dangerous slopes of mountains extending up to Mysore.

ENJOY PRIMAL ADVENTURES AT WATERFALLS IN WAYANAD- The Kalakkayam Waterfalls in Thiruvananthapuram is the place to go if you're looking for pure adventure. Wayanad's Chembra Peak is the highest in the region and lies 2100 meters above sea level. From the base of the peak, you can witness the clouds gliding by the top. When you reach the top, you can enjoy a surreal 360-degree view of the entire region.

Monsoon is the best time to trek in the rain forests of Wayanad. The trek hardly takes 6-7 hours and usually involves fewer threats from the Jungle. It is known for its spices, and all through the forest, you can find your kitchen stuff hanging on trees.

Places to Visit Wayanad

Pookode Lake is a popular tourist destination in Kalpetta, in Wayanad. It is the second-largest freshwater lake in Kerala and the highest freshwater lake in the state.

Bird watchers can also have a good time here, especially during migration season.

Soochipara Falls in Wayanad is a popular tourist destination. The waterfall descends from a height of 656 feet and is located in Vellarimala Hills.

The water from these waterfalls later joins the Chaliyar River that flows across the Vellarimala Hills. The waterfall descends from a height of 656 feet and is also a great place to enjoy rock climbing.

Pookat Lake Wayanad is located three kilometers south of Vythiri town. The pathways around the lake are lined with shrubbery and tall trees.

The Panamaram rivulet is one of the main tributaries of River Kabani.

The Muthanga wildlife sanctuary houses a diversified flora and fauna, one of the best bets to catch a glimpse of Asia's largest elephant population.

Best Time to Visit WAYANAD

Wayanad offers a pleasant atmosphere all year long. Wayanad continues to experience temperatures that range from a high of 25°C to a low of 15°C. The months of October through May are ideal for travel to Wayanad. The weather in Wayanad at this time of year is often pleasant, cozy, and cool. Additionally, it's a great time to go sightseeing and engage in other activities like boating, hiking, and camping. Winter is considered the finest time of year to spend a vacation since you, your family, or your friends may participate in outdoor activities in Wayanad without enduring the summer's sweltering heat and risking dehydration.

The winter months of December through February are cool, with the lowest temperature reaching 10°C. Many visitors to Wayanad like this chilly, cozy atmosphere. How to Reach WAYANAD

Being one of the most visited tourist spots in the South, the city of Thrissur is well-connected to all routes by all means of transport, i.e., by air, by road, and by train.

Wayanad is about 65 kilometers from the Calicut International Airport in Karipur. It is the closest airport to Wayanad..

Regrettably, Wayanad is still not connected to the railway system. Kozhikode is one of the closest railroad stations. The Calicut Railway Station is what it is called. The distance is 62 kilometers. At Kozhikode, the Poona and Rajdhani Express frequently connect.

There are KSRTC buses available. Due to the lack of rail service in most areas, it is a wise decision. Many people depart from Bangalore by car. The rationale is that you can visit Nagarhole, Bandipur, and Mudumalai national parks.

A bit into the history of the land

From time unknown, communities settled here despite all the odds a hilly forest land could offer for humans. Neolithic rock engravings are found at Edakkal caves, near Ambukuthimala. Wayanad was part of the Ezhimala kingdom, a prominent dynasty in the northern Malabar region of Kerala, and has got mentions in Sangam literature, the first orderly presented literary works in south India. Wayanad was the site of Kerala Varma Pazasshi Raja’s place of resistance against the British East India Company and eventually his martyrdom. This makes it more significant in the history of Kerala. The Pazasshi tomb at Mananthavady is a spot for historians.

As I mentioned earlier, I have been there at various times of the year, so I could recommend you the best places to visit at the best time. 

The Best Time to Visit Wayanad

The tourist months (august to february).

The tourist season in Kerala starts in the second half of August when the south west monsoon , the provider of more than 75% of Kerala’s annual rainfall, slowly starts to retreat. From September to May, it is the most convenient time to be in Wayanad. 

The Best Months (September to November)

If sightseeing is your priority, September to November are the best as the natural beauty of Wayanad can be seen in its full might. Set your base at Mananthavady and you could explore Meenmutty waterfalls, Banasura Sagar dam, Kuruva islands, Thirunelli hills, and Muneeswaran Kunnu in two or three days.

Shift your base to Kalpetta or Sultan Bathery and visit between February and May if trekking is your top priority. Chembra peak, Muthanga wildlife sanctuary, Edakkal caves, Sunrise Valley, Wonder Caves,Sentinel Rocks, and Pookode Lake are the best places around here. Guides are available at reasonable rates and will be helpful overall. 

The Busiest Months(November to January) 

If you are here to experience the soothing effect of nature, Wayanad offers that too. Book a decent resort as per your budget, as they are available in plenty. From November to January is the best time for a resort stay . 

The Christmas and New Year celebrations in the winter here will definitely be a memorable one . Well, it doesn’t matter if the places and times mentioned here do not match, Wayanad still won’t disappoint you. Avoid visiting here in the months of July and August. You will be welcomed by heavy rainfall, and this may jeopardize all your travel plans. It’s also a bit dangerous as landslides are common during this time and chances are high of getting trapped for days if you are in any remote areas.

How to reach Wayanad

Wayanad is not connected by rail or airports. The Kozhikode railway station, Thalassery railway station, and Mysore railway station are the nearest railway stations (detrain at your convenience and place of stay), and Kannur international airport is the nearest airport. The Kerala tourism department handles almost all the locations, and there are entry fees ranging from 20 to 50 rupees. 

** Skip Mondays as most of these locations are closed for maintenance.

Things to do in Wayanad

Explore their culture..

As it’s one of the least urbanized districts in Kerala,agriculture and animal husbandry are the major sources of income for the Wayanad population. Farm tourism is the newest attraction here.

The best way to explore cultural diversity is to visit religious sites and tribal villages.

Museums, temples, and landmarks of historic importance are also found in equal numbers. The Thirunelli temple complex, the Jain temples at Bathery and Panamaram, Valliyoorkavu temple at Mananthavady, and Seetha Lava-Kusha temple Pulpally are the main religious places to visit.

The diversity of beliefs is the major attraction here. Various religious communities co-exist peacefully and in harmony, something Kerala as a state in general is famous for. People here are peace-loving and are broad-minded in welcoming guests. Home to various tribal communities, the soul of Wayanad is related to the forests and its resources. En Uru, a tribal heritage village project, set up at Pookode, showcases the traditional knowledge and livelihood ways of the ancient communities of Wayanad. Many areas of the districts have wayside shops that sell tribal goods like pickles, tea, coffee, handicrafts, and also the new-age chocolates and sweaters. Buying them will be a boost to those communities. 

Try authentic cuisine.

You can find ample multi-cuisine restaurants in Wayanad. The Malabar cuisine of Kerala waters our mouths and even activates our unknown taste buds. Wayanad cuisine does justice to that legacy. The most popular dish is, of course, biryani, which comes in a variety of flavours. Another marvel is the Baked tapioca. Try it with fish and meat combinations. Chatti Pathiri is another addition to that famous list. 

Bakery culture in Wayanad is on par with the Malabar standards, new varieties of sweets and fries pop up every year and it’s hard to recollect all those names. Well, vegetarians may suffer a bit if you are in search of pure veg restaurants, as fish and meat are an integral part of Wayanad cuisine.

Enjoy the unpredictability of the weather.

 Located at an altitude averaging around 1500 meters above sea level, Wayanad offers a cool climate all year round. Monsoon in Wayanad has a niche of its own, carrying an umbrella or a waterproof jacket will be helpful as rains may bless you any time irrespective of the seasons. Each time I passed through Lakkadi, the gateway to Wayanad, through the Thamarassery pass, this land offered something new and fresh. Rocky mountains, giant trees, fresh waters,in this southern tip of the famous Deccan plateau we could see Western ghats in all its glory. 

Say no to plastics

A small piece of advice I would like to offer is to refrain from carrying plastic bags because they are generally prohibited in most places. This is advantageous because plastic waste management is a major issue in many tourist destinations. So kindly consider not to give plastic enough room in your backpacks as our responsibility towards nature. Do visit this part of earth at least once in your lifetime, I assure you will not regret it.

Top 5 places to see in Wayanad

Edakkal Cave

One of my favorite places to visit is Edakkal Caves. It houses ancient rock inscriptions that date back to 8000 years. A large rock’s natural fissure created the cave. The inscription, which shows both human and animal figures, has not yet been fully deciphered.

It is at a distance of 25 km from Kalpetta town and 45 km from Mananthavady town. 

Kuruva Island

Kuruva Island, or Kuruva Dweep, is formed by the river Kabani. Brimming with exotic flora and fauna, this island is one of the best places to visit in Wayanad. Tourists are permitted with a small entrance fee as this is a section of the protected forest area.

There are bamboo rafts to take you to the island, and once you are there, you can explore the island. The forest guards will be there to help. 

Soochipara Waterfalls

This waterfall is an absolute joy for those who visit here. Wayanad is blessed with many waterfalls, both small and big. Soochipara Waterfall stands out due to its elegance and rage. The rainforest and the wilderness around it make the perfect setting for a nature lover to fall in love. It is at a distance of 23 km from Kalpetta town. 

Chembra Peak

It is the highest peak in Wayanad and is a paradise for those who love hiking and spending time in the peacefulness of the mountains. This is a no smoking and plastic free zone.

One thing to note here is that if you are here for trekking, they charge you a fee (800 to 1500) for 10 people. Even if you have a head count of less than 10, you still need to pay for the minimum of 10 people. So plan your trips accordingly. 

 Banasura Hills and Banasura Sagar Dam

The Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earthen dam in India and is the second largest in Asia. There is a nominal entry fee here and there is speed boating available for an additional fee.

The rolling Banasura hills backdrop the dam reservoir, an ideal place for a picnic and a spellbinding and picturesque hotspot.
