Matilda the Musical Review: A Stunning Encore!

international tour matilda

Matilda the Musical returns to Singapore after a 5-year hiatus.

In 2019, we were treated to one of the best family musicals to hit Singapore shores. Back then, we were captivated by the catchy tunes, the sleek choreography, the lavish sets and the outstanding performances.

Matilda the Musical

This time around, the storyline endeared us to the musical. The dark underlying tones of abuse and bullying were balanced by comical physical performances.

international tour matilda

We were awestruck this time around; the magic returns with a spectacular set and ridiculously charming performances.   The comedic and witty pace had us in stitches, the choreography kept us on the edge of our seats, and the performance left us clamouring for more!

Kudos to GWB Entertainment and The Royal Shakespeare Company for producing this masterpiece-  Matilda the Musical . Presented by Base Entertainment, this is a must-see for families as laughter, life lessons, and pure theatrical delight await you.

Matilda the Musical is based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl. It centres on the main character, Matilda Wormwood, a precocious five-year-old girl who loves reading but faces abusive parents at home and a tyrannical headmaster at school. She does have a special talent up her sleeve—telekinesis, which can level the playing field.

The Royal Shakespeare Company originally staged the musical before its West End debut in 2011. The musical has since garnered 101 international awards, including 24 for Best Musical.

We are privileged to have the original company performing this musical in Singapore. This was more polished than the last run in town, with better choreography and refined performance.

The Standouts

Yolani Balfour , who played the Protagonist, was outstanding as Matilda. She was one of three performers who played the title role. Her expression was spot-on, and the vocals were superb, especially during the storytelling, which kept us engrossed. Her heart-touching performance endeared her to the audience and had us rooting for her throughout the show.

One can feel her tinge of sadness at the character's lowest post and share in her triumph when Matilda asserts herself in the play.

Special mentions to  James Wolstenholme 's scary portrayal of Miss Trunchbull and Matthew Towland as the hilarious Mr Wormwood, Emily Squibb as the hilarious Mrs Wormwood, Gemma Scholes as the conflicted Miss Honey and Ryan Anderson as Rudolpho who nearly stole the show with his sexy Tango moves.

international tour matilda

The set itself is inspiring. Think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meet Alice in Wonderland. While the stage size is limited, the way it transformed from the living room of Wormwoods to the classes of Crunchem Hall is a work of art.

There are plenty of noteworthy acts throughout the show. From the well-choreographed The School Song to the hilarious tango dance to the jaw-dropping Swinging and the foot-stomping finale, the  Revolting act  will leave you captivated in this mesmerising performance.

This is more than just a musical. The witty dialogue, the physical comedy, the immersive performances and the surprising twist in the tale bring live Ronald Dahl's book on stage.

Who is this for?

While Matilda may seem like a children show, .

This was one of the wittiest musicals we watched. Look out for Mr. Wormwood's antics and the hysterically funny rumba romp. It will make a great family musical or a dating musical. It's a musical for everyone!

Tickets information

Tickets are now available at Marina Bay Sands for $68. Maybank card members receive an exclusive 15% discount across all categories. The show runs at Sands Theatre from 9 March to 7 April. It will last 140 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission.

THE MATILDA THE MUSICAL STORY

Below is the story of how Tim and Dennis Kelly helped turn Roald Dahl’s famous children’s book Matilda into a hit musical. Updated May 2021

SKIP TO: Matilda | Photos | Videos | Quotes/Reviews | Awards | Press | Stratford-Upon-Avon | West End, London | UK & Ireland Tour | Broadway, New York | US Tour | Australia | Toronto, Canada | Auckland, New Zealand | International Tour | Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical Movie

The RSC’s Matilda The Musical website has tickets available for the West End and the UK & Ireland Tour . It also has slightly less Minchin-centric information, than this page, in the form of videos, cast and production information, clips of the cast recordings, all their social media accounts and more. But as a head-start here they are on Twitter: @MatildaMusical , @MatildaBroadway and @MatildainOz . Teachers and children will find many creative writing resources on the RSC Education Department’s interactive website MatildaSchoolResources.com .

Information regarding the performance rights for Matilda The Musical can be found here . Matilda the Musical (in 20 minutes) will be released for schools and amateur youth groups (i.e. performers aged 16 years or younger) in the UK and Ireland ONLY from 4th March, 2014. This version will be available for a limited time prior to the official release by MTI of Matilda the Musical Junior Version (currently in development).

Roald Dahl ’s children’s novel Matilda was first published in 1988 with illustrations by Quentin Blake . It is the story of a very bright and rebellious little girl, with special powers. Matilda’s parents, Mr and Mrs Wormwood, have no time for her and treat her as a nuisance. She spends most of her time reading books from the library astonishingly quickly, whilst they watch the telly and Mr Wormwood sells dodgy used cars. At school things are no better as despite the care and support of her teacher, the lovely Miss Honey, Matilda has to contend with the terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull who rules the school with cruelty and fear. Matilda fights against the injustices at home and at school. Eventually she decides the grown-ups should be taught a lesson and in the process discovers her supernatural powers

Chapter One: Stratford-Upon-Avon

In December 2008, director Matthew Warchus approached Tim about writing the music and lyrics for a stage musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s famous book, to be produced by The Royal Shakespeare Company. Tim had little hesitation: not only was the chance to write for the RSC impossible to resist, but as a life long fan of Dahl, he had – coincidentally – attempted to secure the stage rights to Matilda ten years earlier, when he was writing for theatre in Perth, WA.

Working from Kelly’s script adaptation, Tim wrote his first draft in the middle of 2009, with the first workshop production taking place in London in September. A significant restructuring and a short period of rewriting was undertaken in the autumn, and – with Tim on tour in Australia – a second workshop took place in November. Over the new year big changes took place, characters were discarded, songs were binned, scenes were conflated, and inevitable crisis talks ensued, but not until Tim returned from Australia in March did the final push begin. Warchus, Kelly, Minchin, RSC dramaturge Jeanie O’Hare, and legendary musical supervisor Chris Nightingale spent an intense two months renovating the script. The final workshop production took place at the end of June, further adjustments were made, and rehearsals started in September 2010.

Following the dress rehearsal on the 6th November 2010 the show was performed to its first public audience, three days later, on the 9th at the Courtyard theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon and was extremely well received. The previews continued for a month, with everyone working hard to tighten it up and tweak it into perfection. Finally Matilda, A Musical opened on the 9th December with the industry press in heavy attendance. The audience rose delightedly to their feet at the end and the reviews that followed in the national press were wonderful. The production was sold out over Christmas and throughout January until the run ended on January 30th.

A few days before the end of the run  Matilda was awarded the Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical . These awards recognise excellence for theatre throughout the UK and are selected by a group of professional theatre critics. The Peter Hepple Award for Best Musical (new or revival) was presented by Matt Wolf, at the Prince of Wales Theatre and was accepted by director Matthew Warchus and some of the children from the cast.

There were now high hopes for a transfer to London’s West End and for a cast recording of the show.

Back to the top of this page!

Chapter Two: London’s West End

international tour matilda

Tim visited the Cambridge whilst the outside was being adorned with Matilda-ness and scaffolding…

On the 30th March 2011 the Royal Shakespeare Company confirmed there would be a West End transfer in autumn 2011 for an open-ended run but there was a suspenseful wait until May 19th for all the exciting details. Then, at last, with the new grown up title and shiny new artwork: Matilda The Musical could stand tall and announce that it was heading to the Cambridge Theatre, in London’s West End, previewing from Tuesday 18th* October 2011 with an initial booking period to 12th February 2012. * Following a press release , on 29th September, this was amended to previewing from Tuesday 25th October 2011 with opening night on Thursday 24th November.

In May 2011 Tim worked on the cast recording with the original Stratford-upon-Avon cast at Air Studios, Highgate. This was released on Roald Dahl Day; 13th September 2011. This long clamoured for recording is available from the RSC Shop and the Matilda The Musical website where you can listen to preview clips of the tracks. There was an iTunes release on the 18th October.

The casting announcements came in two parts: First in August the adults and Matilda’s school friends and then on Dahl Day the four young actresses who will be playing the eponymous Matilda were revealed at a press launch at the London Eye. (See the photo below).

With opening night in the West End fast approaching Tim talks here , on his blog, about the cast recording and the preparations for the move to the Cambridge Theatre.

In late October 2011, as Matilda The Musical had its first preview, Tim and Eleanor Worthington Cox, one of the four young actresses playing the title role of Matilda , spookily graced the front cover of Time Out London’s Halloween issue . Inside the magazine Tim talks about Matilda The Musical with Time Out London’s theatre editor Caroline McGinn. You can read the full interview here and see an additional photo from the shoot on the Time Out blog here .

At the Evening Standard Awards ceremony, hosted by Dame Edna Everage, on Sunday 20th November, Matilda the Musical won the Ned Sherrin Award for Best Musical. It was presented by Miranda Hart and collected by Tim, Dennis Kelly and Matthew Warchus. In their round up of the award winners The Evening Standard gave reasons for their choice:

THE NED SHERRIN AWARD FOR BEST MUSICAL TIM MINCHIN, DENNIS KELLY AND MATTHEW WARCHUS for Matilda The Musical “The quest for a great new musical is over, at least for now: London (and before long, presumably, the world) has just that in Matilda, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s deliriously funny and moving adaptation of Roald Dahl that has arrived on the West End following cheers and not a few tears on the occasion of its premiere last December in Stratford-upon-Avon.

That rare show pitched ostensibly at children that lucky adults in their midst will doubtless enjoy even more, Matilda comes down on the side of love and literacy as well as burp jokes, bad hair, and a bravura performance from Bertie Carvel, playing a battleaxe of a headmistress with a voice by way of Hannibal Lecter. (Carvel made the ES shortlist for best actor.) The altogether buoyant score is from Australian comedian Tim Minchin, marking his musical theatre debut amid a creative team (director Matthew Warchus included) that finds everyone involved at the top of their game. Small wonder the opening song is entitled “Miracle”: it takes one to know one.”

Tim said: “Working on Matilda has been one of the greatest thrills of my life, and I’ve been aching to let her loose on audiences at home. Most of us grew up reading Dahl – the Australian sense of humour gels so well with his dark, iconoclastic tone. The last time a musical I helped write opened in Sydney, the actors almost outnumbered the audience, the theatre leaked, and my drummer was a bass player. If Matilda’s arrival is half as fun as that was, it’ll be a hoot.”

At the media launch in October, 2014, Tim gave a speech and performed songs from the show, including When I Grow Up. Clips and more images from the event can be found in the Video and Photos sections below.

March 2015 saw the announcement of four of the principal adult cast members: (in alphabetical order) Marika Aubrey (Mrs Wormwood), Daniel Frederiksen (Mr Wormwood), Elise McCann (Miss Honey) and James Millar (Miss Trunchbull).

Then, a month later, the four young actresses who’ll share the title role in the Australian Premiere Season of Matilda The Musical were announced: (in alphabetical order) Molly Barwick, Sasha Rose, Georgia Taplin and Bella Thomas. They spend the day of the announcement travelling around Sydney in a Matilda branded London taxicab! (see Photos)

To celebrate the fast approaching opening night, Tim guest edited The Sydney Morning Herald’s Spectrum on Saturday 23rd July, 2015, writing this article: Tim Minchin: I’m bringing Matilda the Musical home detailing some of the twists and turns in his life and career that led to him writing the music and lyrics for Matilda. Tim’s cover shot can be found in the Photos section below.

Quotes/Reviews

Sydney, Australia – Lyric Theatre:

The Australian

“Dennis Kelly adapts Roald Dahl’s story to the stage with brilliant new details, and Tim Minchin has loads of room for songs with bold, springy rhythms and razor-sharp lyrics that make you want to punch the air with delight. It’s a stylistically supple score, with exhilarating colour and energy matched by moments of deeply affecting tenderness…”

Stage Noise

“Matilda the Musical is that rare thing: a show that’s genuinely for all the family. It’s altogether remarkable and brilliantly realised.”

“…lyricist and composer Tim Minchin and book writer Dennis Kelly have turned it into a spectacularly witty, intelligent and irresistible show that engages at every turn.”

“All in all, Matilda the Musical is the treat you and yours have been waiting for if you’ve been waiting for an intelligent, beautiful, funny, sad and ultimately triumphant delivery of Australian musical theatre talent. Not to be missed.”

The Sunday Telegraph

“Matilda is one of the most thrilling new musicals of recent years: a show that isn’t afraid to be dark, sophisticated or smart, while at the same time pulsing with a gloriously funny streak of child-like, anarchic naughtiness.”

“Matilda is a gem of a show with a wonderful heart and message about standing up to bullies and fighting for what is right. It’s also a love letter to joy of words. Pure magic.”

Time Out Sydney *****

“Matilda is a freaking masterpiece. Like its heroine, this show stands head and shoulders above its peer group of bright young things, pushing its way into all-time-favourite lists.”

Limelight *****

“Indestructible Success”

“Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly’s blockbusting adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda demonstrates that the art of creating intelligent, well crafted, elating musicals that leave the brain fizzing, the heart pounding and the face aching from uncontrollable grinning is alive and well.”

New York, Broadway – Shubert Theatre:

The New York Times

Ben Brantley describes Matilda as “the most satisfying and subversive musical ever to come out of Britain, where it was nurtured into life by the Royal Shakespeare Company… even more glorious than we were promised… truly revolutionary.”

The Washington Post

Peter Marks says “ ‘Matilda’ [is] by some large and tickling measure the most splendiferous new musical of the year…”

“With a delectably clever score by Tim Minchin and a slyly evocative book by Dennis Kelly, the musical, is distinguished by its wonderful look and a caliber of choreography for young people you rarely ever experience.”

Chicago Tribune

Chris Jones hails the production as “far and away the best new musical of the Broadway season, indeed one of the best family-oriented shows of any season” and describes Tim’s score as “remarkably rich, occasionally anthemic” singling out “a simple, gorgeous Tim Minchin song, ‘When I Grow Up.’ “

The New York Post

Elisabeth Vincentelli says “Once in a blue moon, a show comes out blazing and restores your faith in Broadway. A treat for ears and eyes, brain and heart, the glorious ‘Matilda’ has it all.”

Time Magazine

Richard Zoglin proclaims Matilda “the wondrous new musical from London that has just arrived on Broadway. It would be easy to call it the best British musical since ‘Billy Elliot’, but that, I’m afraid, would be underselling it. You have to go back to ‘The Lion King’ to find a show with as much invention, spirit and genre-redefining verve.” and says “[Tim Minchin] has written a score that seems all but woven into the scenery—simple but distinctive tunes, intricate lyrics, a touch of jazz here, or wailing rock there, but all of a piece, integral to the show and like nothing else.”

London, West End – Cambridge Theatre:

The Guardian *****

“Writer Dennis Kelly and composer and lyricist Tim Minchin go to the top of the class with this anarchically joyous, gleefully nasty and ingenious musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s story.

It’s an evening of unadulterated bliss.”

The Telegraph *****

“Hilarious, moving and magical.

Dennis Kelly’s script actually improves and deepens Dahl’s original. Meanwhile, Aussie comedian Tim Minchin has come up with a smashing score that combines take-home melodies with delicious lyrical wit in songs that consistently develop both the plot and our understanding of the characters.

A thrilling, warm-hearted production, which constantly combines comedy with a sense of wonder.”

The Evening Standard *****

“Matilda is a gem…enchanting. At the heart of this satisfyingly fresh adaptation of a cherished Roald Dahl story are Australian comedian Tim Minchin’s music and lyrics, which ooze humour…Dennis Kelly’s book switches smartly from grubby fun to a grown-up idiom.

This generous, big-hearted piece is already being spoken of as one of the best new British musicals in years.”

Time Out, London *****

“The RSC’s ‘Matilda’ is the best British musical in years. And it’s not just a kids’ show… It is guaranteed to delight anyone who’s ever been a child.

Writer Dennis Kelly has enlarged Dahl’s book brilliantly, making ‘Matilda’…an upliftingly stageable story of collective rebellion… we have the mini-heroes of Year 1, rocking out and fighting for their right to be ‘a little bit naughty’.

Tim Minchin’s catchy, satirical music and lyrics include a couple of spot-on anthems [and he] gives his Revolting Children a fantastic hackle-raising finale – but subtle songs like ‘When I Grow Up’, staged beautifully on swings, ensure there’s an achingly wistful conversation between childhood and adulthood along the way.

It’s smart, quirky and sublimely good fun.”

Stratford-Upon-Avon – Courtyard Theatre Run:

“Director Matthew Warchus, … brings the show to life with a buzzing vitality that proves irresistible…But the biggest laurels should go to Dennis Kelly, whose script has both deepened the emotion of Dahl’s story while adding loads of splendid jokes of his own, and Tim Minchin, the Aussie comedian, who has written the music and lyrics.

The songs fizz with humour and great take-home melodies. Kelly and Minchin suddenly look like the brightest prospects for British musical theatre since Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.”

WhatsOnStage.com *****

“Tim Minchin’s music and lyrics sparkle with wit and energy, demonstrating a touch of genius to rival that of the eponymous Matilda. Complemented by Dennis Kelly’s book, they make up a piece which is by turns riotously funny and gut-wrenchingly poignant …, all brought vividly to life by Matthew Warchus’ masterful direction.”

The Times *****

“Dennis Kelly’s adaptation grips from the start… Jokes and numbers come thick and fast…Tim Minchin’s lyrics, to his own music, are so good that the temptation to write them down could, at any point, make you miss some extraordinary sight.”

The Independent ****

“The Royal Shakespeare Company has struck gold with this wildly entertaining musical… Dennis Kelly’s clever adaptation and the witty, intricate songs by Aussie comic Tim Minchin create a new, improved version of Dahl’s story”

“Matthew Warchus’s wondrously well-drilled production finds just the right balance between gleeful grotesque humour and heart-warming poignancy”

Evening Standard *****

“The RSC’s new musical version of Roald Dahl’s Matilda is a triumph: enchanting, bold and ingenious… In Tim Minchin, it has found the perfect spur for a wildly tuneful reimagining… The Australian comedian has crafted a succession of witty songs: his lyrics are full of trickery, his melodies instantly winning.”

“In this lovingly created show, Matilda’s magic positively sparkles. There’s a cleverness in the writing which ensures that, while it appeals to children, there is plenty for adults to savour… it’s blissfully funny…There’s a playfulness throughout that proves intoxicating.” More quotes and reviews can be found here and here .

Taylor Swift is about to go back on tour: Here's what to expect on the Eras Tour in Paris

international tour matilda

After a two-month break, Taylor Swift is revitalizing her titanic Eras Tour in Paris, and fans believe there are changes coming to the show.

If you are wondering where she's playing, if there will be changes and how to score tickets, here's everything we know.

And if you're new to the Eras Tour party, you can get caught up on the first 83 shows here .

When does the Eras Tour start again?

Swift kicks off the European leg of her tour on Thursday, May 9, in Paris. She will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well, in the City of Light.

What are Taylor Swift's tour dates in Europe?

There are 69 shows left in the Eras Tour: 51 in Europe, nine in America and nine in Canada.

The European leg stretches from May all the way through a five-night stand at Wembley Stadium in London in mid-August.

See a complete list of international dates here .

After she wraps up in Europe, Swift will stop in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis before wrapping up in Canada.

See the remaining U.S. dates here .

What is the Eras Tour set list?

The Eras Tour has featured a massive 45-song set list you can check out here . But speculation is swirling it won't look the same when Swift takes the stage in Paris.

Will Taylor Swift add 'The Tortured Poets Department' to her set list?

The tortured poet has been on hiatus keeping her stamina up by releasing a double album of 31 tracks. The 2-hours-and-2-minutes project broke a number of Billboard records as the superstar did zero press to promote it. Fans flocked to stores and streaming services to listen to all the songs from "Fortnight" to "The Manuscript."

Although the singer has not confirmed whether her 11th era album will be added to her Eras Tour set list, she did post a YouTube shorts video with two scenes that sent Easter egg decoders into a frenzy. In one of the shots, the singer is next to a railing where a "TTPD" logo appears to be (at 0:11). In the succeeding shot, her back-up dancers perform holding canes and wearing top hats, something they have not worn previously.

Swift's dancers and bandmates posted to their Instagram stories as they left for France last week. The singer did not appear at two media events with her boyfriend Travis Kelce: the Kentucky Derby and a Formula 1 race in Miami , Florida. Patrick Mahomes, Kelce's friend and Kansas City's quarterback, attended the car racing spectacular with his wife, Brittany.

Can I still get Eras Tour tickets?

Swift's show is completely sold out in Europe and North America. There are resale sites with tickets, but be wary of scams. The best way to avoid getting swindled is continuously checking links on Swift's website . There are some for resale on the sites verified by her camp.

Singapore was a hotbed for fans who traveled thousands of miles only to get turned away at the venue. In Tokyo and Australia, last-minute ticket drops happened a few days — without announcement — ahead of the shows.

Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis — the three U.S. cities Swift is visiting in the fall — have some of the heftiest price tags with Canada closely behind. In may be cheaper to travel to Warsaw, Poland, or Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Here's a list of cities with the cheapest resale tickets, according to travel website  Islands.com .

10. Vienna, Austria — total average cost: $1,089, safety score: 69.72

9. Cardiff, U.K. — total average cost: $1,061, safety score: 61.83

8. Lyon, France — total average cost: $1,047, safety score: 44.3

7. Lisbon, Portugal — total average cost: $1,028, safety score: 70.15

6. Munich, Germany — total average cost: $1,000, safety score: 78.88

5. Paris, France — total average cost: $971, safety score: 41.83

4. Stockholm, Sweden — total average cost: $935, safety score: 53.86

3. Hamburg, Germany — total average cost: $903, safety score: 57.51

2. Gelsenkirchen, Germany — total average cost: $749, safety score: 51.33

Who are the opening acts?

Paramore launched the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023, so it's fitting the American rock band is opening the tour's second year. The act will open for Swift for 51 shows across Europe . The band was dubbed the 2024 Record Store Day global ambassador and surprised fans in Nashville the weekend following the release of "The Tortured Poets Department."

When the tour comes back to North America in October , Swift's opening act will be Gracie Abrams.

Where can I watch if I don't have tickets?

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. A few Swifties have learned how to host their own shows over social media including Tess Bohne , known as the livestream queen. Bohne goes live for (almost) every show pulling streams from Instagram and TikTok. When a livestream goes down, she fills the time with banter.

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the three-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric , is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has played an acoustic set she customizes at each stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mashups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

  • "Taylor Swift" (debut album): "Mary's Song" and "A Perfectly Good Heart"
  • "Fearless": "The Way I Loved You," "Change," "Superstar," "We Were Happy," "That's When," "Don't You" and "Bye Bye Baby"
  • "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan," "Forever Winter" and "Run"
  • "1989": "Sweeter Than Fiction"
  • "Reputation": "I Did Something Bad"
  • "Lover": "London Boy," "Soon You'll Get Better" and "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
  • "Folklore": "Hoax"
  • "Evermore": "Happiness" and "Closure"
  • "Midnights": "Paris" and "Glitch"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department": all 31 tracks

Will Taylor Swift perform in 2025?

There have been many rumors that Swift will continue her show in 2025, but they are only rumors. Nothing has been announced for next year, and as of now, the tour will end in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 8.

First-Timers Stray Kids Wear Custom Hilfiger to the 2024 Met Gala

Many of our favorite K-pop stars have attended the Met Gala, including Jennie (2023) and Rosé (2021) of Blackpink and NCT’s Johnny , but never have all members of a group shown up to the first Monday in May together and wearing the same designer—until tonight, that is. All eight Stray Kids flew from Seoul to make their red-carpet debut at the 2024 Met Gala in custom looks by Tommy Hilfiger. “Representing Tommy Hilfiger as eight members for the first time on the Met Gala carpet is truly a rare and honorable moment for us,” said Felix, a doe-eyed blonde Australian who has 22 million Instagram followers and counting.

The Tommy Hilfiger most of us are familiar with is preppy and all-American, but for the Met Gala, he wanted to be sure to channel the evening’s theme while staying true to his brand DNA. His signature red, white, and blue color scheme is incorporated throughout the eight members’ ’fits, with elegant floral detailing finishing off the looks. And if you thought that Hilfiger was taking an understated approach tonight, you thought wrong. This evening the members first walked on the carpet in what looked like your everyday wool peacoats but soon pulled them open to reveal that the linings formed the American flag.

Underneath their patriotic coats, Bang Chan, the leader of Stray Kids, wears a classic navy three-piece wool suit lined with red piping and topped off with a gold floral pin at the lapel, while Felix (who you may recognize from Nicolas Ghesquière’s fall 2024 Louis Vuitton runway) is in all white, sporting a silk suit embroidered with intricate flowers that goes exceptionally well with The Garden of Time dress code.

Hyunjin and Lee Know, who form the group’s dance and visual line, have opted for red, the former in a red double-breasted suit with gold crested buttons and the latter in a double-breasted blazer featuring red buttonhole details on the lapels.

Rappers Changbin and Han, meanwhile, are wearing matching button-ups. The shirts feature a translucent classic Tommy Hilfiger Ithaca stripe finished off with a gold floral button at the top. Rounding out the octet, I.N and Seungmin both paired their cotton shirts with satin suits. For Seungmin, as a longtime fan of Hilfiger, the evening is an unreal experience. “Tommy Hilfiger was a brand that I loved growing up, so it’s unreal to me that I grew up to become the model for the brand and even attend the Met Gala as its ambassador. It is such a great honor,” he said.

The group has sold out stadium tours across Asia, Australia, and North America, but walking the biggest event in fashion didn’t come without some nerves. “I’m nervous since this is our first Met but will power through to be the most presentable for this amazing opportunity,” Han told Vogue . “We couldn’t have done it without Stays, our fans, for always supporting us.”

Hilfiger was in his feelings too. “Dressing all eight Stray Kids—a global force in pop music—for a Met Gala red-carpet experience has been one for the books,” he said. “One of the special things about Stray Kids is each member has a completely individual style, and they all complement each other perfectly. This enabled us to design a sartorially cohesive yet distinctively personalized ensemble for them, reflecting their different personalities. The outfits blend our classic American cool style with floral and botanical details that pay homage to the story by J.G. Ballard and the time flower at the center of the tale. It was tailored with a distinctive Tommy twist to make this one night to remember.”

So can we expect a Stray Kids appearance at New York Fashion Week? Bang Chan, Changbin, and Lee Know (the members who have yet to make a Fashion Week appearance) sure hope so, pending the team’s schedules next September. Bang Chan said, “All the members are very interested in fashion, and attending shows is an experience that we can’t forget. There are still members among us who haven’t been able to experience the wonders of the shows yet, but I can assure you that we are all very willing to attend! Fingers crossed for New York Fashion Week!” We’re willing to bet that Stays are also crossing their fingers.

Day Five as the Cork International Choral Festival Winds Down

Today was totally a schedule given to us by the festival. We were slated to officially begin the day with an 11 am Mass at the Church of Christ Our Light in Ballincollig, just a 10 minute walk from our hotel. They graciously allowed us to rehearse there twice before the festival competition, so this was a little thanks from us.

**Remember that if you're on a computer, you may click the first photo to enlarge it, then proceed through the gallery at that larger size by using the arrows below the image. Click the "X" in the upper right to exit the large size.**

Between Drs. Crane and Wells and choir members, they came up with a list of pieces that would work in this setting. The first was "Were You There," arr. Patrick Dupré Quigley. Then a quickly pulled-together "I Feel My Savior's Love," by Janice Kapp Perry; "Peace" by Paul Mealor, conducted by Stevie Dugdale; and the ""Agnus Dei" from the Fauré Requiem that was performed at BYU last February. With Dr. Wells conducting again, Dr. Crane at the piano, and music either on digital devices or some printed copies, they sang it beautifully.

There wasn't much time to meet and greet the congregation, but the choir tried. They exited through a lovely reception with drinks and treats, headed to the local grocery store to pick up a quick lunch, and readied themselves for the three mini-concerts this afternoon that the festival thought we should sing in Cobh. No one knew what would be sung until we arrived and could scope out the situation. It pays to be flexible on these tours!

There were small but enthusiastic audiences at all three spots, though some people weren't quite sure who we were or why we were there. Inside locations were much dryer than outside.

We then headed back to the Cork City Hall, where the awards ceremony was due to take place at 5 pm. There were five special awards given to different choirs that can be read about at https://www.corkchoral.ie/international-participation/fleischmann-international-trophy-competition/ .

Then they finally got down to the three awards we were waiting for—first, second, and third place. Third place was given to a very fine choir from Puerto Rico: Coralia. Second place went to Mt. San Antonio College Chamber Singers from California. And first place went to BYU Singers!! This was an award that was very much deserved. The choir and Dr. Crane did everything possible to be ready for this competition, and it showed in their professional-level performances. One judge spoke about how they expected good tone, good intonation, good diction—but beyond those basic requirements they were looking for "musical intelligence," and repertoire that required that musical intelligence. BYU Singers exhibited that, and received the Fleischmann International Trophy. Of course, Dr. Crane only was able to hold the large trophy for 30 minutes or so before returning it. The choir's name and 2024 will be engraved on the trophy to commemorate the win. But we have photos to prove it!

After the room calmed down a bit, the choir went up on stage to perform "Caedmon’s Hymn" by Blake Wilson. There was thunderous applause and a standing ovation. We heard from many how pleased they were that BYU Singers took first.

There was a break for dinner, then we returned for the final Gala Concert. BYU Singers were next to the end, and performed the Ligeti and the Herrera pieces from their competition set. They were stunning, and were met with another standing ovation. This was the final performance of this edition of BYU Singers, though that is just beginning to feel real after such a triumph. It is never easy to say goodbye after a year of working hard and singing together and learning to love repertoire and each other—and this year many who have been in the choir for several years are moving on to a new phase of life away from BYU. The BYU Singers experience will always remain a highlight of their university and musical lives, and the strong friendships will remain across the years and miles. This truly has been a very remarkable choir and a memorable year.
