Gay in Barcelona: Our guide to the best LGBTQ spots in the city

gay barcelona tours

Gay travelers in Barcelona will have no shortage of bars, cafes, and clubs to visit. There are plenty of nightlife hotspots and daytime venues where you can meet LGBTQ locals and travelers. Barcelona’s LGBTQ community is thriving and has a rich history. It was the first city in the Catalan region to protest for LGBTQ rights, and there are many activist groups continuing the campaign now. The main gay area is at the edge of the Old Town district, in the lively Eixample neighborhood, which is home to some of Barcelona’s best cultural attractions. If this is your first trip to the city, be sure to check out our guide on things to do in Barcelona and our best tips for hidden gems in Barcelona .

Is Barcelona LGBTQ friendly?

gay barcelona tours

Barcelona is considered one of the friendliest cities in the world for LGBTQ travelers. Spain legalized gay marriage in 2005, and trans people can legally change their gender with or without gender-affirming surgery. Polls consistently show that public opinion on LGBTQ people is mostly positive, and you shouldn’t have any problems being visibly gay and showing affection in public. If you do run into any issues, the LGBTI Centre can help point you in the right direction and offer assistance. Spain’s capital, Madrid, has the highest LGBTQ population, but Barcelona also has a large, welcoming local scene that gay travelers will fall in love with.

The gay area in Barcelona: Gaixample

gay barcelona tours

“Gai” is the Catalan word for “gay,” and “Gaixample” refers to the center of the Eixample district of Barcelona. This area sits on the outskirts of the Old Town and is known for its easy-to-navigate urban design. Its convenience makes it perfect for a Barcelona city break . You can find the Gaixample district between the streets of Carrer d’Aragó, Carrer de Balmes, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, and Carrer del Comte d’Urgell. Some streets, such as Carrer de la Diputació, have a higher proportion of LGBTQ establishments than others, but if you go anywhere in this area, you won’t be far from the best of Barcelona’s gay nightlife. If you decide to stay outside of the district, the Urgell and Universitat Metro stations are close by.

The best gay venues in Barcelona

gay barcelona tours

These gay cafes, bars, and clubs are just a taste of what Barcelona has to offer. We’ve selected some of the finest places in the city, with something for those who want to party and those who want to relax. Most are situated within the Gaixample neighborhood, and many are within convenient walking distance of one another.

gay barcelona tours

Punto BCN has a very laid-back pub-like atmosphere, and it’s a great spot to relax in the afternoons and evenings. You can have some drinks, grab something to eat, play some pool, and chat with friends. Punto is a lovely place to start your night out, especially if you’re looking for a sit-down meal. For the most relaxed atmosphere, visit Punto in the afternoons, and for a bigger crowd, arrive later in the evening. It gets really busy by around 10:30 pm as it’s popular with locals and tourists alike. It hosts themed nights, live music, and other similar events.

Priscilla Cafe

gay barcelona tours

Priscilla Cafe is another excellent option for those looking for a relaxed queer venue that isn’t mainly about drinking (although it serves alcohol). Named after the cult-classic Australian film, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Priscilla Cafe is located at the center of Eixample. Its interiors are the perfect blend of glitzy and cozy, with photos in bedazzled frames lining the walls. Open from 12:00 pm to 2:30 am, pop by for lunch and a show with drag queens performing throughout the week, or relax with drinks in the evening. Its Drag Bingo is especially popular and frequently held on Sundays.

Candy Darling

gay barcelona tours

This is one of the most visited queer spaces in Barcelona because it offers many functions. Named after the iconic trans actress who starred in several Andy Warhol films, Candy Darling is a place to eat, drink, socialize, and be entertained. It hosts drag performances, cabarets, and circus performances. It serves toasted sandwiches (known as Bikini Darlings) including the delicious Pastrami Cuir and the Candy Candy. There are also pizza slices on the menu as well as excellent drinks from the bar. One of the bar’s most striking features is the array of LGBTQ art that lines the walls, including photography, murals, and neon light installations. Candy Darling is located close to the Plaça de la Universitat, and it’s a spacious, welcoming establishment that everyone should visit at least once during their trip to Barcelona.

gay barcelona tours

If you’re looking for another bar where alcohol and art collide, then check out Museum Bar, a unique gay club filled with replicas of paintings and statues. It’s only open on Fridays and Saturdays between 10:30 pm and 3:00 am, and it gets busiest after midnight. It plays pop music all night long, and it’s best that you drop by here if you’re in the mood to dance, as there’s very little seating space. Museum Bar is in a great location for bar hopping, close to a number of other gay and gay-friendly bars and clubs, such as Moeem and Disco City Hall.

gay barcelona tours

Moeem is a smaller, more intimate LGBTQ bar that’s known for its delicious cocktails served by friendly bartenders. Gin and tonics are Moeem’s specialty, and it has a wide variety of gins to suit different tastes. It opens at 6:00 pm and it’s a popular place to kick the night off before heading to other nearby bars and clubs. If you’re after a more low-key night, you could also stay here until closing, at 3:00 am. You can relax in the plush lounge area or show off your moves on the dancefloor. It often hosts themed nights, live performances, and parties. Outside of these events, you can always rely on a steady stream of pop and reggaeton to keep the dancefloor full.

Disco City Hall

gay barcelona tours

Disco City Hall is one of Barcelona’s best party venues. While it’s not specifically a gay club, it hosts a gay party called Dirty Disco every Friday, which is one of the most popular gay events in Barcelona. The party is split between the main dance floors and a disco room, spread across three storeys, with excellent DJs keeping the music going all night long. It usually opens at 5:00 pm and doesn’t close until 5:00 am. The party starts at around midnight, so you can start your evening off at Moeem or Museum Bar and head over to Disco City Hall later in the evening. Outside of Dirty Disco, Disco City Hall is one of the best spots in Barcelona to see Flamenco dancers perform.

Barcelona’s gay events

gay barcelona tours

In 2022, Barcelona saw around 50,000 people participate in its annual Pride March, many of whom were local residents. With such a strong LGBTQ community presence, there are plenty of other gay events in Barcelona that are worth planning your trip around. Most events take place during the warm months, from mid-summer Pride to late-summer parties and film festivals.

Barcelona Gay Pride

gay barcelona tours

PRIDE Barcelona is held every year over a long weekend in late June. The event’s march usually begins at the Plaça de la Universitat and ends at the Passeig de Lluís Companys. Spain’s Pride March has its roots in the 1977 protest that took place on Las Ramblas Boulevard, organized by the Catalan Front for the Gay Liberation. The main Pride Festival is usually held at the Avinguda Maria Cristina, just by the Montjuic fountains. Previous performers on the Pride Festival stages include Aqua (of “Barbie Girl” fame) and the Dutch Eurodance group The Vengaboys. The Gaixample district organizes a street fair filled with a variety of stalls, speeches, and performances. Tibidabo Amusement Park hosts a “Gay Day at the Fair,” and at night you can head to the Matinée Pervert, Pride Edition Party, at the Input Club in El Poble Espanyol.

Circuit Festival

gay barcelona tours

Beyond the gay bars and clubs in Barcelona, one of the city’s biggest attractions is its beautiful weather, and the yearly Circuit Festival brings the party out into the sun. Held in August, it makes the most of the end of summer, with over a week of parties held at various locations throughout Barcelona. Highlights include parties hosted by the Forever Tel Aviv group, the Water Park Party held at Illa Fantasia, and the Pool Party that takes place right by Barcelona’s beaches. There’s also the Girlie Circuit Festival, held at the same time, featuring the iconic lesbian rave The Legend Party, the La Leche Lesbian White Party, and the Girlie Water Park Party. Live performances and DJs keep the music going from day to night every day of the festival. If you need a break from all the partying, the festival also hosts film screenings and art exhibits, created and curated by LGBTQ artists.

Barcelona LGBTQ film festivals

gay barcelona tours

Mostra FIRE!! was first held in 1995, making it the oldest-running LGBTQ film festival in Barcelona. Most screenings are held at the French Institute, near Eixample, but there are also open-air screenings throughout the festival. The Barcelona International Gay Film Festival is usually held in mid-August and features LGBTQ movies from around the world. Along with the screenings, you can watch panels discussing films and issues facing LGBTQ creators. Both festivals program documentaries, feature films, and short films.

Gay hotels in Barcelona

gay barcelona tours

Spain has strong anti-discrimination laws, so generally, you won’t experience problems with any establishments. We’ve put together a list of some of the most inclusive hotels that offer comfort and convenience for LGBTQ travelers.

gay barcelona tours

Cram Hotel is a popular gay-friendly hotel in Eixample, close to gay bars and clubs. It’s housed in a gorgeous 19th-century building that’s been outfitted with all the modern amenities. Be sure to head up to the seventh floor to try a meal at its Anemos Terrace Bar. It serves appetizers and tapas and offers incredible views of the city while you eat.

gay barcelona tours

Axel Hotel is one of the most popular gay hotels in Barcelona. In fact, it has such a strong LGBTQ clientele that it bills itself, amusingly, as “hetero-friendly.” This adult-only hotel in the center of Gaixample recently opened up a second branch down the road to keep up with high tourist demand. The hotel’s Sky Bar offers amazing views of the city (and you don’t need to be staying at the hotel to visit). There’s a wellness club, complete with a gym and sauna, and complimentary breakfast. Many of the best gay bars in Barcelona are close by, and if you’re traveling alone, it’s an easy spot to meet fellow LGBTQ travelers. Its popularity means it’s often booked up months in advance, so try to get a room early.

Hotel Villa Emilia

gay barcelona tours

Hotel Villa Emilia is situated at the edge of Gaixample, just a block away from the Rocafort metro station. This is a great option for travelers who need a pet-friendly hotel in Barcelona. One of the hotel’s highlights is the Zinc Bar, which features live performances from singers and musicians. Try to arrange your dinner here during the live performances for at least one night of your stay— the wonderful old-school atmosphere is worth the trip. There’s also a terrace where you can enjoy the fresh air or enjoy its barbecues held every Sunday.

Acevi Villarroel

gay barcelona tours

Acevi Villarroel is in an ideal location for many travellers. It’s in the heart of the Gaixample district, close to many gay bars, cafes, and clubs. What stands out for many travelers is the hotel’s friendly, helpful staff and its spa that offers massages, saunas, and steam baths. Hotel guests receive significant discounts on all services. It’s also close to attractions such as the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and Casa Batllo. The Universitat Metro Station is very close by, so getting around Barcelona is easy. Detours Travel gave me the trip of a lifetime and one of the best weeks of my life in a castle in Italy! I booked this trip for the first time a little less than a year ago based on raving reviews from a friend of mine and Detours lived up to the reviews and then some. Every single detail gets thought through meticulously, leaving me to focus on nothing but relaxing and enjoying the sites. Optional lead tours are available at times, if you choose and each day has the perfect balance of planned activities that you can opt in or out of. I was able to pay for my trip in installments which made financial sense, and any time I had any issue or change needed, a quick email did the trick with no work needed on my end. Travel to and from the destinations are all planned ahead, and trip leaders are knowledgeable, friendly and create an inclusive environment to ensure everyone feels welcome and like friends. The masterminds behind the scenes go out of their way to make sure that this trip is unforgettable, I'm already planning my next one. Thanks Detours!

Choosing Detours Travel was the best decision I have very made seriously, without a doubt the best vacation I have ever had!!!!! I have never traveled with a group of 16 Gay Men of various backgrounds, interests; to be very honest this was an "out of the box" moment for me which caused much anxiety going in. From the moment I arrived in Athens a day early I reached out via What's App to see who was in town, hooked up with 3 guys in a few hours and the adventure began. Our Leader Brandon who was in contact with us as soon as we began the adventure and continued to check on all the group several times either in person or on line, everyday this man is on top of everything! He instantly wins everyone over with his amazing energetic, positive, humorous, welcoming, kind, warm, personality he knows his business inside and out nothing stumps him he always comes thru even after hours. What a beyond excellent representative for Detours Travel Bravo Brandon!!!!! The trip every detail looked after amazing transfers, hotels, restaurants, scheduled and extra tours offered ( no hard sell just suggestions you may want to pursue or not ) Any of my friends knows I am a tough demanding customer with high standards. I can honestly say all were met no complaints whatsoever ever I would go on another Detours adventure for sure maybe only travel this way from now on Two more things I will share: 1/ I had a little incident with an ATV vehicle no injury to me whatsoever Brandon managed me and was the go between with vendor keeping me informed with calming grace and figuring all out. 2/ before reaching our last destination Brandon shared there was problem with my room but assured me it would be handled as it was; when we reached hotel the management was amazing laid out the options which I agreed to - Amazing Property & Service. That is it...... having a tough time..... without Detours & Brandon getting thru may days without their guidance Cheers to you all,

As a solo traveller I was a little worried about going on a group trip.  I saw all the other positive reviews and booked. Well there is a reason why the reviews are all 5 stars, I had the most amazing trip to Greece. I felt so relaxed right from the start after meeting all the other guys and our tour guide Oliver. The next 12 days was like having a holiday with all your friends and as a group we got to see and do so many fabulous things together. Oliver was our guide and how lucky were we to have him. He just did everything for us from booking taxis, restaurants, tours and putting information into our group chat so we always new exactly what was happening. He would even put a link in there to find our way back to our hotel after a couple to many drinks which was needed a few times. Detours is 5 star from the moment you make contact with them and continue even after your tour is finished. I just recommend them so much if you are looking to have that trip of a lifetime that you will never forget. I can’t wait for my next adventure with them.

Just finished up my 9th trip with Detours Travel and it was yet again another incredible trip! My first trip was in Costa Rica in 2015. Since then I have traveled with Detours to Peru, Thailand, South Africa, Croatia, Israel/Jordan, Italy, Scandinavia and New Zealand. If you are looking for a memorable trip with amazing adventures, I highly recommend you book with Detours! I am less than a week from returning from New Zealand and already thinking about my next trip.

A Detours travel experience is like no other and I simply cannot recommend them more highly. If you enjoy well-planned, yet flexible itineraries, experienced trip leaders, knowledgeable local guides, high-quality accommodations, and small groups that breed new friendships, then you'll love Detours. We've taken 2 trips with Detours. One to Egypt and one to Thailand & Cambodia. In both cases, our trip leader, Shane, was the ultimate host. We've loved every minute of these trips and will go on another as soon as we can. Detours was started ten years ago (we got to celebrate their birthday in Cambodia!) by guys who are passionate about travel and wanted to build a brand that could extend that passion to their guests. They've cracked that code and we are thrilled to have been referred to them by friends. Detours balances hundreds of factors to build amazing travel experiences that are affordable yet lean into higher quality. This is no budget vacation package but it's also not a luxury package. And speaking of packages, while there is a framework of itinerary and pre-booked activities, there is also a lot of flexibility built-in. With small groups up to about 15 guests, this allows time to go off on your own or in small groups with newly-minted Detourse friends to explore your location. That's perfect for seasoned travelers as well as those who are just beginning to experience international travel. Happy 10th Birthday, Detours! We are so thrilled to have found you and highly recommend that readers of this review visit your website and find their next trip of a lifetime!

Tim and I had an amazing time on our Detours trip to Costa Rica. This was our first time on an all-male trip, so we did not know what to expect. We have already registered for our second trip with Detours, so you know where this review is going. Everything leading up to the trip was handled with professionalism and ease by Detours. That same vibe continued once the trip started. Brandon, our trip leader, was high-energy, fun, kind, inclusive, organized, connected, and on top of his game. He did not miss a beat, all details were attended to, and he made the trip enjoyable for all. Clay was equally kind and fun, and we look forward to one of his guided trips in the future. Costa Rica is a beautiful country. We loved the variety of our locations (the beach, the mountains, the hot springs / Volcano). A little bit of everything was perfect. We participated in so many unforgettable activities (ziplining, Tarzan swing, ATV, white-water rafting, canyoneering, sunset cruises, beaches, waterfalls, pool parties, park tours, . . . ) that filled our days and brought us even closer to the group of guys we traveled with. The beauty is you get to choose your own adventure. Do it all, or do nothing, no pressure. If that is not enough, you get to experience it all with a diverse group of men from across the globe. The friendships and connections we made were easy even for introverts and heightened our positive experiences. We hope to continue these friendships in our future travels. If you are on the fence, get off. A Detours experience is worth it. Enjoy your trip!

I took my first and certainly not the last Detours trip. It was to Portugal and Morocco, in October. My tour Guides Ollie and Shane were awesome. They helped with any questions and looked into any additional activities that you might want to do. I specifically asked about a balloon ride in Morocco that was one of my highlights. The accommodations were all great. This trip exceeded all my expectations. I have always been a solo traveler and it was nice to share this with fellow travelers. I found I did activities I most likely would have not done on my own. Taking a Tajine cooking class, gone on a camel ride, private dinner for the group at someone's home. This gave me the opportunity to explore and understand the culture and perspective of life that I would have missed otherwise. There were many planned activities but also plenty of down time, to do your own thing. I look forward to many more Detours adventures.

My husband & I recently returned from the October 2023 Spain trip. We really loved our Detour Tours travel experience. Our trip was made up of 16 fellow travelers - 4 couples & 8 singles who were all personable and easy going. We had a wonderful Tour Leader, Scott, who was very knowledgeable, experienced, approachable and looked out for all of us.  He went out of his way to be inclusive and was a great source of information on the local sites and activities.  Detours arranged the hotel accommodations, the airport transfers, and the travel between the 4 amazing cities of Barcelona, Granada, Seville, and Madrid. The tour included walking tours and a major attraction at the start of each destination city, but the rest of the time we were free to explore, join a group activity, or just chill in our hotel room or a nearby cafe. Our favorite experiences were the walking tours because the local gay tour guides were so knowledgeable, informative and personable. We learned a lot about the rich local history and culture of the Spanish cities we visited.  Our second favorite experiences were the fun group dinners and pre-and post dinner drinks that Scott organized and which most of us joined in. Although there was no pressure to join in other optional activities, we ended up signing up for a number of them such as cooking class, watching a flamenco show, and seeing the Prado Museum. They were all memorable and fun. Thank you Scott & Detours. If you are looking for a well run LGBT group travel experience, we strongly recommend Detours Travel. Victor and Jim from Palm Springs CA.

Wonderfully run tours for gay men. I took their 12 day tour of Spain which included Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla and Madrid. I enjoyed their helpful yet flexible format so much I'm planning my next tour with them. Unlike other group tours, you're not stuck on a bus and forced into their schedule. You can go with the group to popular locations or you can spend time on your own, or both! It's really the best of both worlds, having a reliable tour leader to take you to see the sites--as well as having all the free time you want to explore on your own. There's a walking tour of each city, and a list of the most popular sites. You choose what you want to do, and the tour leader creates a schedule so your interests don't conflict. You go to big attractions, like Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, as a group because they've arranged for tickets in advance (without which you can't get in). Our group leader, Dan, was always helpful, organized, kind, cheerful, always calm, and funny. He made sure we got to see what we wanted to see, either as a group or individually. The 14 gay guys on the trip were all good-natured and easy to get along with. As well as having a great format, Detours is also an excellent value as travel gets more expensive. You stay at lovely, centrally located hotels, with a buffet breakfast included to keep you going all day. The group meets for dinner which you can attend or not, as always, it's your choice. Transportation between cities on the tour are also included. It's a low stress, great fun way to discover the world with like-minded people.

The 12-day tour of New Zealand was an absolute adventure from start to finish! Exploring Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, and Queenstown provided a diverse and captivating experience that left us in awe of this beautiful country. Highlights included ascending the Sky Tower in Auckland, where the panoramic views took our breath away. The wine tour on Waiheke Island introduced us to some of the finest local wines in a picturesque setting. Hobbiton was a dream come true for any Lord of the Rings fan, with its charming hobbit holes and lush landscapes. The thrill of Zorbing in Rotorua was unlike anything we've ever experienced, adding an exciting twist to our journey. And who could forget the majestic beauty of Milford Sound? Flying back from Milford Sound to Queenstown on a Cessna plane was an unforgettable highlight, offering unparalleled views of the stunning fjords and rugged landscapes below. Throughout the trip, our tour leader, Chase, went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly. From organizing activities to providing insightful suggestions, Chase's expertise and enthusiasm enhanced our experience tremendously. In conclusion, the journey through New Zealand was nothing short of extraordinary. From its vibrant cities to its breathtaking natural wonders, this tour showcased the best that this remarkable country has to offer. We returned home with memories that will last a lifetime and a deep appreciation for the beauty of New Zealand. Highly recommended for any adventure seeker!

Steamy Windows – The Top 4 Gay Saunas in Barcelona in 2024

Saunas have existed since Ancient Roman times and even then bathhouses were always far more than just a place to relax. Back then, the public baths – or “thermas” of Rome served as social meeting places. Separated by sex, it isn’t hard to imagine that Roman men would indulge in activities not that different from what the gay community use them for in the modern age. Either way, the tradition of saunas has very much been inherited by gay/bi men as places to unwind, socialize and find some no-strings attached fun.

Barcelona honors this Roman legacy with its saunas filling every day from dusk till dawn – and indeed dawn till dusk as the majority have 24/7 open hours. Barcelona being abundant with gay tourism plays a role and its saunas have become an international reference standard – with designs from quality interior designers and coming equipped with clean reliable facilities. Within them you’ll always find tourists from all over the world mixing with hot local men – and what more could you really want?

The individual saunas of Barcelona are different enough from each other to make every escapade a unique experience, ranging from the luxurious and modern to the small and cozy. Some sadly closed over the pandemic, but these four have stood the test of time and are each worthy of exploration during any trip to Barcelona.

Sauna Casanova

Eixample – better known to the locals as “Gaixample” – is Barcelona’s principal gay area and where you’ll find most of the saunas, sex clubs and cruising bars of the city. Sauna Casanova is found in the heat of the action in Gaixample, on the street of the same name. It’s the most famous bathhouse in Barcelona – making it the busiest. Recently renovated, it is huge – at 1400 square meters – also making it not only the biggest sauna in Barcelona, but also the biggest in all Spain.

Casanova has a massive jacuzzi, which fits more than twenty guys – at a pleasant squeeze – and its other facilities across three floors include dry and wet saunas, a steam room, big dark rooms, a maze in the basement filled with cubicles, a fetish area equipped with a swing, a video room and even an actual swimming pool – not that a lot of swimming goes on there. In the center of Casanova is a lively and somewhat stylish bar – by sauna standards – making it a great place to socialize as much as find action.

The men are generally of the younger muscled variety, although everyone is likely to find someone to their tastes due to the influx of tourists. During the weekends there is a flurry of activity as the nightclubs close and party goers are looking for a way to close the night – saunas basically serve as the unofficial afterparties of Barcelona. During big parties like Barcelona’s (in)famous Circuit party , or Pride, you can expect a long line to enter. Totally worth the effort though as the atmosphere on such occasions is palpable and with the hotness on offer, you’ll no doubt find someone(s) with which to form the kind of memories you won’t easily forgot. The only real negative is the cost: at 21 euros on average, or 23 on holidays.

Sauna Thermas

Once the biggest sauna in Spain until Casanova stole its crown, it is also found in Gaixample but on Calle Diputacion. Being the same group of saunas as Casanova – Grupo Pases – it is also open 24/7 and its 900 square meters is packed with a lot of the same facilities. There are two pools in Thermas and its own jacuzzi – this time for 12 people – as well as darkrooms, cruising area and cabins. The cozy bar downstairs serves as a welcome respite from the action upstairs.

For many Thermas is the second option after Casanova and is slightly less busy as a result – a good thing for those who don’t like getting lost in the throng. It does however cost the same amount to enter. The selection of cute guys who attend are endless, but it is also a well-known location for rent boys, so make sure you clarify beforehand because some of them may expect to be paid in return for their company.

Sauna Condal

Grupo Pases largely hold the monopoly on saunas and this is yet again one of their venues, meaning it costs the same to enter. However, Condal is best known for being welcoming to everybody. As in…every body type, making it is a firm favorite of bears, chubs and older guys – who mix with a few of the more typical muscular guys you’d expect to find in saunas. It also tends to draw those of the kinkier persuasion. Perhaps this variety is due to the themed nights they organize like bears, leather, and naked nights. Its four floors include enormous darkrooms and fetish areas as well as the usual saunas and jacuzzi.

Sauna Condal has a lot of tradition and character surrounding it making the people – and staff – feel a little friendlier with a more local feel. The entrance can be found close to Plaza Catalunya through a discreet cul-de-sac in the Gothic neighborhood.

If you like a little style in your saunas and prefer relaxation over intensity, then Sauna Bruc might be more up your alley. It’s located a little out of the gay part of town, near the port and in Urquinaona – try pronouncing that! Sauna Bruc is slightly smaller than the previously mentioned saunas, but what it lacks in size it makes up for with effort – always a good trait.

Inside there’s the usual dry and wet saunas, jacuzzi, steam room, dark rooms, glory holes and cubicles, but their pride and joy is their hydromassage pool that uses pressurized jets great to massage those hard to reach zones on the back – the wall contains pictures of male pop idols like Elvis to add the touch of culture often lacking in other venues. In fact, the whole sauna has a stylish chic to it with its blue interior, plants and artwork dotted around the place. The bar especially exudes a more laid back vibe than you’d typically expect from a sauna and it serves drinks and snacks at very reasonable prices.

The entrance fee stands at 14 euros, making it one of the cheaper saunas in Barcelona. Just like Condal, they host themed parties like naked nights and a 2-for-1 offer for mature men – should you want to bring your partner. Some nights even host local DJs to add a club type vibe into the mix.

Sauna Etiquette

The gay saunas in Barcelona are perfect places for tourists and locals to come together – so to speak. They are undeniably more direct, and based in reality, than apps like Grindr. Not to mention more comfortable and relaxing than cruising areas. However, there are certain rules – both written and unwritten – in saunas, which are in no way unique to Barcelona.

Approaching guys can be nerve wracking – no one likes being rejected – but there are various tactics that can be used. Visitors who don’t speak Spanish may find language an issue sometimes – although most people in Barcelona speak at least some English – but sex is an international language as is the “I think you’re hot” eye! Good ways to hook-up with your prey of choice are leaning on the wall opposite them and waiting for eye contact to approach, sitting in the jacuzzi, pool, bar etc and chatting to men before inviting them to a more private space – or not going to a private space for the exhibitionists amongst us – or waiting inside a cabin with the door ajar. What is important, whichever tact you choose, is learning to take no for an answer and moving swiftly on from rejected advances. Adopt a “plenty more fish in the pool” attitude because in saunas, there’s always someone for everyone.

Then there’s learning how to say no yourself. A tried and tested technique for someone who misreads your interest and touches you is to lightly move their hand off you by the wrist, smile and give a slight squeeze to show you aren’t offended then move away – remember we’re all there for the same reason and there’s no reason to be cruel. If they persist however, never be afraid to give a more direct no. Never accept harassment for your preferences.

Cleanliness is next to Greek godliness in saunas and so don’t leave things like used condoms on the floor. Remember you can swap your towel for a cleaner one at any point and douching facilities are available in all saunas… you might have to wait in line for it though. Finally, when making your exit be sure to return your towel and flip-flops into the given receptacle, give your keys to reception and thank the hardworking staff you’ll find there.

With so many options available to you, all that is needed is the will and a little Roman-like courage to pursue it. So, as the expression in Rome once said – slightly adapted to the modern age – “’when in Barcelona, do as the Catalans’.
