7 Affordable, Yet Best Cruises in India That You Can Actually Experience Right Now!

Opinions on cruises are divided.

Some consider them a massive waste of money and time, abhor their readymade tours and contrived performances and miss the action of the real world while on board. And I have to agree. Those expecting travel experiences out of a cruise are set to be disappointed. You won't be meeting any locals, hunting for new places to see on a map, making impromptu plans or indulging in authentic local flavours, even if you are on some of the best cruises in India .

But for when you need to shut your mind off and hand over the controls to someone else, a cruise makes for an excellent vacation. The only thing you are expected to remember is buffet time. You can spend the rest of the day lying on a deck chair staring at the sea making waves. Perfect for a rejuvenating break.

If you live in this country, here's the list of best cruises in India

Secret of Sunderbans Jungle Cruise by Antara Cruises

The 4 best cruises to take in India this year

Wildlife enthusiasts look no further. The five-day Sunderbans Jungle cruise aboard the Ganges Voyager traces the culture and wildlife along the majestic Hooghly River. The vessel embarks from Kolkata and makes its way towards the fishing port of Namkhana, the gateway to the Sundarbans. The ship cruises past towns and villages till it enters the protected mangrove forests. Hereon, there are stops at various watchtowers and islands for sightings of endangered crocodiles, terrapins, migratory birds and if you are lucky, the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger . The Sundarbans with its unique and fragile biodiversity has a wealth of flora and fauna that will be pointed out by an expert naturalist on board. This apart, there is plenty to take in by way of culture and history—from centuries-old temples to glimpses of local life in the surrounding villages. The days are spent either meandering down the river or excursions onshore, evenings are usually reserved for unwinding over drinks and watching folk dances and musical performances from the region. The Ganges Voyager is an all-suite ship which can accommodate up to 56 guests and is done up in a heritage colonial style with Burma teak, vintage furniture and hand-stencilled walls. There are five categories of rooms across three decks, all of which offer expansive views from floor to ceiling windows or balconies. The ship has a restaurant offering an array of local delicacies as well as Continental fare, a lounge, sun deck and a fitness centre and spa for some quick rejuvenation after a day of sightseeing.

Included in most cruises are transfers, accommodations, onboard meals, and excursions as described in the itinerary.

Dishes vary from region to region.

Cruise Around the World: Must-see Cultural Locations in India

Planning a cruise around the world ? Don't miss out on some of the top cultural experiences in India. Book a cruise with a stop in Mumbai, where you can visit the breathtaking Jain Temple, legendary sporting venues such as Wankhede Stadium, and the popular Chor Bazaar. Or cruise to Cochin where you can explore the bustling area of Fort Cochin and take in picturesque views of the legendary Chinese fishing nets. Here are five cultural sites worth seeing on your cruise to India.

Jain Temple, Mumbai

Put the Jain Temple on your list if you have a passion for exploring religious venues and learning about their origins. Officially named Babu Amichand Panalal Adishwarji Jain Temple , this adorned temple is a must-see attraction, complete with two stone elephants guarding its entrance and a host of artwork portraying famous Jain saints and deities.

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

With a capacity of 32,000, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is great for die-hard cricket fans and newbies alike. This famous stadium, which was home to the 2011 Cricket World Cup final, has produced more cricket legends than any other sporting venue in India.

Chor Bazaar (Thieves Market), Mumbai

Literally meaning "thieves market," the popular Chor Bazaar has a history that sprawls over more than 150 years. Visitors and locals find crafts, jewelry items, antiques, and more at this bustling attraction. The shops in Chor Bazaar are open almost every day from 11:00 am to 7:30 pm, but close on Friday, which is Muslim prayer day. Prices are negotiable, so score the best deals at the market by using your bargaining skills!

During your stay in Mumbai, there are many other excursions to experience. Don't miss out on popular places such as the Taj Mahal, the Elephanta Island Caves, and Dhobhi Ghat — one of the largest outdoor laundry facilities in the world.

Fort Cochin, Cochin

Today, the city of Cochin boasts a heritage that's woven deep into its cultural and architectural fibers. That heritage springs from its role as a popular spice trading center and seaport since the 1300s.

As the oldest European settlement in India, Fort Cochin is full of life and history. You can opt to cruise a lagoon in Alleppey, explore Mattancherry Palace with its many murals and art exhibits, or see the famous Chinese fishing nets that are hoisted above the harbor.

Chinese Fishing Nets

When you arrive in Cochin, you will notice the Chinese fishing nets. Standing 10 meters high and made from bamboo, these nets were thought to have been introduced to the area by Zheng He, a Chinese explorer. As one of Cochin's most recognizable sights, these nets were first installed between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

The Chinese fishing nets are still in use today. Visitors can purchase seafood in the late afternoon when the nets come down, and have it cooked on the spot. If you can, spend an evening taking in a stunning Indian sunset while enjoying a succulent dinner that's fresh from the Arabian Sea.

Iconic Collection: India land tour and Ganges river cruise

cruise routes in india

Don’t miss your opportunity to sail the scenic Ganges and explore the diverse culture, cuisine and attractions India holds. This is a hosted cruise, meaning you can join James Cole and a select group of Panache Cruises customers and invitees to experience this magical part of the world together.

Here’s what James had to say about it:

“On this one we will be spending a few days pre-cruise in New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, soaking up the sights, sounds and tastes of India on a brilliant Golden Triangle tour. We’ll visit the majestic Taj Mahal at sunrise and sunset, stay in immaculate Oberoi hotels and explore palaces and temples by tuk tuk.

I can’t wait! I just know that India is going to be a life-changing experience for me to tick off my bucket list, and I hope you can join me on this adventure. You might’ve also seen this sailing recently on Channel 5's "Cruising with Jane McDonald!”

Land tour: New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur

Day 1-2: trip commences in new delhi.

You have the opportunity to explore the heart of New Delhi in a two-night luxury hotel stay. The national capital of India is bustling and embedded with a unique heritage which you can experience first-hand. Your expertly-led city tour is included and provides an ideal first foray into this fascinating land. To cap your day of taking in the sights of scenic New Delhi, relax this evening over a delicious dinner at the Oberoi Hotel with your fellow travellers. Refuel for another day of exploring tomorrow!

Take a trip to the local markets and experience the famous Indian fashion alongside the local cuisines on offer. Why not try some authentic New Delhi street food; paranthas and chicken chaat for example? Immerse yourself in the traditional Indian culture and visit the beautiful Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, a white-marble Sikh Temple. Inside the majestic temple you can explore a gurdwara, which is a kitchen that accepts everyone to dine there, regardless of religion or nationality.

Day 3: Explore the wonders of Agra

The second destination you will be exploring is the cultural city of Agra, which is home to the monumental Taj Mahal! This stop offers the opportunity to embark on the bucket list experience of capturing a golden, dramatic sunset behind the architectural and majestic Taj Mahal. This is truly one of the most sought-after tourist attractions and UNESCO World Heritage Sites; a bucket list experience.

taj-mahal

As well as the iconic Taj Mahal, you can take a tour of the breathtaking Mehtab Bagh, a park which was originally built by Emperor Babur and is embedded with fruit trees and impressive fountains. After a busy day exploring the bustling city, relax in a five star hotel handpicked by Uniworld to create the most memorable experience.

Day 4: Enjoy the architectural Jaipur

Wake up early this morning to see the white marble monument of Taj Mahal for the second time, this time aglow with the rosy tinge of dawn.

After transferring to Jaipur, take the chance to visit the majestic Amber Fort (included in your fare), which is located on top of a small hill roughly 11km away from the main city. Once inside you can explore the four courtyards, palaces and the array of gardens which have been created from sandstone and marble. The intricate details inside the fort are magical and the warm colours create a sense of abundance.

Another must-see attraction is the Jantar Mantar, an architectural project by Jai Singh II. This UNESCO World Heritage site is devoted to astronomy, it utilises the sun and the direction of shadows to work out the time.

Day 7: Explore cultural Kalna

Uniworld India finds hidden gems that are bursting at the seams with culture.

Kalna is home to over a hundred Shiva temples and the magnificent Rajbari Complex, which is not one to miss. Its extensive range of temples, palaces and gardens will mesmerise you! Kalna is famous for its annual traditional festivals, the most popular one being the grand Durga Puja celebration. The town comes alive with bright, bold colours and a spiritual feeling fills the air attracting locals and tourists, creating an incomparable atmosphere.

Foodies are spoilt for choice here too, it’s home to delicious Bengali cuisine.

Day 8: Revel in pastoral Matiari

Take a trip to the rustic town of Matiari, and explore the traditional lifestyle the locals live outside of the loud, bustling cities.

Matiari has been home to many generations of artisans creating a unique lifestyle, which is prominent in the town to this day. The locals live in mud houses which are covered in intricate carvings and designs that showcase their heritage. Artisans have been making ornamental brass objects, such as vases and figurines, for over a century. The brass used is created from melted scrap metal that then gets pressed into new sheets of brass ready for the craftsman to work their magic.bEach craftsman has a specialised skill and therefore works on individual steps in the process.

The town is embellished with natural beauty and is full of local art, allowing you to immerse yourself and gain an understanding of their culture and how passionate they are about upholding traditions. Once you arrive back on board you can watch a skilled practitioner of mehndi demonstrate the intricate henna process and discover the meaning behind the patterns and how they are created.

Day 9: Silk heritage in Murshidabad

Murshidabad is famous for its silk production, and you have the chance to visit the azimganj sericulture research and training institute to gain knowledge on the silk-making process, learn about the various stages of silk production, including rearing silkworms. you can even purchase souvenirs to cherish the unique experience.

silk-production

Climb aboard a horse-drawn buggy for a ride to Katra Mosque, built in 1723 by the first nawab Murshid Quli Khan who named the town after himself. The monumental mosque was damaged by an earthquake which resulted in losing two of its great four towers, but is still an unmissable attraction.

You will then return to the ship for lunch and cruise to the town of Baranagar, where Rani Bhabani built beautiful brick temples in the 18th century. Goats frolic among them now and vines attempt to take them over, but the terra-cotta carvings are considered among the best in Bengal and the temples are well-tended.

Day 10-11: Get active in Mayapur

The next two days will be spent in the scenic city of Mayapur where you can marvel at the beautiful views and keep a look out for the endangered Ganges river dolphin. Mayapur has religious significance and is a pilgrimage site for devotees from all over the world, as it has some of the most important temples for the followers of the Vaishnava faith. For those who enjoy action, why not take part in some of the activities Mayapur has to offer such as kayaking and river rafting.

Finish the evening by enjoying a Farewell Dinner and take in a lively cultural performance, complete with music and dancing.

Day 12-13: Revisit Kolkata

Last but not least on this rejuvenating and cultural trip, you will revisit the city of kolkata. the city is embedded with the legacies of mother theresa and the colonial-era british raj which you can learn more about through a guided walking tour of the city. if you are a sports fan then this is a must-visit destination for you, as it holds the second-largest cricket stadium in the world alongside an impressive football stadium that holds 120,000 fans.

Cruises are a fantastic option for Indian families, offering a blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural experiences that cater to your preferences. The appeal of cruises lies in their ability to provide a well-rounded vacation that balances family time with diverse activities suitable for all ages.

Tailoring the Experience for Indian Passengers

On many cruises, you’ll find tailored experiences designed specifically for Indian passengers like yourself. From traditional Indian cuisine options to onboard cultural performances, these customized offerings ensure that you feel at home while exploring new destinations. Additionally, staff members often speak Indian languages, making communication effortless and enhancing your overall cruise experience.

Cruise lines also recognize the importance of religious considerations for Indian families. You’ll typically find dedicated spaces for prayer on board, accommodating your spiritual needs during the journey. These thoughtful inclusions showcase an understanding of your cultural practices and make your cruise experience more comfortable and enriching.

Multigenerational Travel Benefits

One of the significant advantages of cruising for Indian families is the opportunity for multigenerational travel. Whether you’re traveling with children, parents, or grandparents, cruises offer something for everyone. With a wide range of activities catering to different age groups, from kids’ clubs to entertainment options for adults, everyone in your family can find enjoyment on board.

Multigenerational travel on cruises allows for shared experiences and bonding time, creating lasting memories for your family. You can partake in activities together, such as shore excursions, cultural workshops, or simply relaxing by the pool. The variety of options ensures that each family member can tailor their experience to suit their interests while still enjoying quality time together.

Cruises provide a unique setting for Indian families to unwind, explore new destinations, and create precious moments together. By offering tailored experiences and catering to multigenerational travel, cruises ensure that every family member, regardless of age or background, can enjoy a memorable vacation on the high seas.

Top Factors Indian Families Consider When Booking a Cruise

When booking a cruise, Indian families focus on specific factors that cater to their preferences and requirements.

Onboard Cuisine: Finding the Flavors of Home

The cuisine offered onboard plays a significant role in the decision-making process for Indian families.

Indian families often look for cruise options that provide authentic Indian dishes and flavors to enjoy during their travels. Having familiar food options available can make the cruise experience more enjoyable and comfortable for them.

Some cruise lines understand this need and ensure that their menus include a variety of Indian dishes, ranging from traditional curries to regional specialties like dosas and biryanis. By offering a taste of home, these cruises cater to the culinary preferences of Indian families.

Entertainment and Activities for All Ages

Entertainment and activities that cater to all age groups are essential considerations for Indian families when booking a cruise.

Cruise lines that offer a diverse range of entertainment options, including shows, performances, and activities suitable for both children and adults, are highly preferred by Indian families.

For instance, onboard cultural performances, Bollywood nights, or traditional dance shows can provide a familiar and enjoyable experience for Indian passengers. Additionally, activities like cooking classes, language workshops, and family-friendly excursions appeal to multigenerational groups traveling together.

Budget-Friendly Options with Value for Money

Affordability and value for money are crucial factors for Indian families when selecting a cruise vacation.

Indian families often look for budget-friendly cruise options that offer inclusive packages or special deals to make the trip more economically viable.

Some cruise lines provide promotions or discounts for families, making it more feasible for Indian travelers to experience a cruise without overspending. By focusing on budget-friendly options that provide value for money in terms of onboard amenities and experiences, Indian families can make the most of their cruise vacation.

Considering these key factors can help Indian families choose the best cruise that aligns with their preferences, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone on board.

Tips for First-Time Indian Family Cruisers

Booking strategies for the best deals.

When booking your first family cruise, start planning early to secure the best deals. Research different cruise lines that cater well to Indian families, such as those offering Indian cuisine onboard or cultural programs to keep all generations entertained. Keep an eye out for special promotions or early booking discounts that could help you save on your cruise expenses. Remember that flexibility with travel dates can often lead to more affordable pricing, especially if you can travel during off-peak seasons. Don’t forget to inquire about any family packages or group discounts that might be available.

Packing Essentials for a Family Cruise

Ensure you pack wisely for your family cruise by considering the essentials. Don’t forget to bring necessary travel documents like passports and visas, as well as any cruise-specific paperwork required. As Indian families often prefer to have traditional clothing options available, make sure to pack a few outfits for cultural events onboard or shore excursions. Additionally, remember to pack swimwear, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and any medications your family may need. Having a small first aid kit can also be helpful for minor health issues that may arise during your cruise.

Navigating Onboard Cultural Sensitivities

Respect cultural differences while onboard the cruise to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for your family. Be mindful of appropriate attire for various onboard activities and dining venues, as some may have specific dress codes. If your family follows particular cultural practices or dietary restrictions, don’t hesitate to communicate these with the cruise staff in advance. Participate in cultural events and activities onboard to enrich your family’s experience and learn more about different traditions. By being open-minded and respectful of diverse cultures, you’ll create lasting memories on your first family cruise adventure.

You’ve now explored a world of tailored experiences on cruise lines that cater to Indian families. From savory Indian cuisine to vibrant cultural performances, the options are endless. Consider setting sail with Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Line, or Disney Cruise Line for a memorable family adventure. Whether you’re dreaming of the Mediterranean’s charm, Southeast Asia’s allure, or the Middle East’s mystique, there’s a perfect destination awaiting your family. Remember, early planning is key to snagging the best deals and packing essentials like traditional clothing can add a special touch to your journey. By respecting cultural nuances and embracing the diversity onboard, you’re sure to create lasting memories on your next family cruise.
