Where to Hop-On, Hop-Off on the Paris Bus Tour:

Eiffel Tower

Known locally as La Dame de Fer (the iron lady), the Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognized landmarks in the world – and some might argue it’s the most popular attraction in Paris. Built originally as a temporary structure for the World’s Fair in 1900, it still stands over 100 years later! Take a step back to admire the 301.8m of iron, comprising of 18,000 individual pieces – you can forgo the hard hat but make sure you have your camera at the ready! Note: entry to the Eiffel Tower is not included in The Paris Pass

Champs de Mars

Spanning an impressive 60 acres this stunning landscaped garden was first created in the 17th century to grow grapes and vegetables. Later, it became the training ground for the École Militaire (or military school) where a young Napoleon attended. Now it is the site of the Eiffel Tower and a hot spot for a picnic on a sunny day, and if you’re in Paris for the 14th July, you can catch the impressive Bastille Day festivities on the grounds too, a must-see if you like fireworks!

Louvre Museum

Home to the famous Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo - among many, many others - the Louvre is a must-visit in Paris for its huge breadth of art. Originally built as a palace, it’s now the most visited art gallery in the world with a staggering 9.7 million visitors a year! Buy your Louvre Tickets from the Paris Museum Pass for less!

Notre Dame Cathedral was constructed on the Île de la Cité as it was the power center of the city back in 1160. Now, it remains one of the most central hubs of Paris and is an iconic landmark where visitors can explore the huge nave and buttresses, as well as climb the towers for stunning views along the Seine.

Orsay Museum

Originally a train station, the Orsay Museum is an architectural feat and its old structure is still very much visible to this day. With the original station clock, the art gallery displays an array of masterpieces from the years 1848 to 1915, including the likes of Cézanne, Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh.

Paris Opera House

One of the most elaborate buildings in Paris, this stunning late 19th-century building is also known as Palais Garnier or Garnier Opera House. As the most important ballet and opera house in Paris, it is adorned with mirrors, mosaics and chandeliers – not to mention the impressive Grand Staircase. Well worth a visit, you’ll feel like royalty within its walls.

Champs Elysées Étoile

The Champs Elysées is one of the most famous shopping streets in Paris, much on Par with Fifth Avenue in New York, and Regent Street in London. Stretching 1.8miles, this long avenue is an iconic promenade in Paris, lined with high street shops and some of the most expensive real estate in the world. The bus route whips around the Arc de Triomphe as well, so you will get a chance to visit the deck with the Paris Museum Pass.

Grand Palais

This historic building in Paris was built to glorify the arts in Paris, especially the Beaux-Arts movement from which its architecture was inspired. With its stone facades, glass vaults and steel frames it’s an impressive landmark and right on the banks on the Seine it’s got one of the best views in Paris!

Trocadéro

The Gardens of Trocadéro span nearly 94,000m² and with fountains and statues lining its paths, it leads up to the Eiffel Tower on the north side of the Seine, and the Champs de Mars to the south. Within the gardens is also an aquarium, the National Theatre and Chaillot Palace.

And don't forget to make time for a Montparnasse Tower tour while in Paris. It has sweeping views that are not to be missed!

Or the amazing Ballon de Paris Generali hot air balloon ride .

Paris Big Bus Tour Review

T he Paris Big Bus Tour is the gift that keeps on giving. Truth be told I love to walk and see cities on foot, but Paris is a must by bus because it makes financial sense, and it will save you a lot of time.

The Big Bus Tour in Paris

Is it worth it.

When traveling, I am a fan of taking public transportation and traveling like a local. It’s environmentally friendly and you can save money on car rental expenses.

Taking the Big Bus Tour was one of the best decisions that we made because the tourist attractions are spread apart, and you can see many more points of interest while saving time and money.

Paris is made up of 20 neighborhoods (or arrondissements) and the Big Bus Tour will travel through 7 of them.

We spent a total of 9 days and Paris and had a pretty full agenda which included lunch at the Eiffel Tower , a river cruise on the Seine, a day trip to Versailles, a classical concert at La Sainte Chapelle, trips to outdoor markets like Marche des Enfants Rouges, visiting the rooftop of the Arc de Triumph, souvenir shopping, Sacre Coeur, the Louvre Museum, the Champs Elysees, the Catacombs, Rue de Cler, Pont Alexandre , a croissant making class with a Parisien chef, Ile de la Cite, Berthillon, and more. We also ventured out to see Paris at night and the views were stunning!

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in Paris

The Red Route is the main tour, and it takes about two hours to see everything if you don’t exit the bus. We stayed on the bus from start to finish to get a idea of places that we wanted to visit on foot.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in Paris

The ticket fee will vary based on the number of days that you want to join the tour bus. I recommend the combination ticket where you can see the points of interest for the Big Bus, and take a cruise on the river Seine.

It is possible to do both the tour and the cruise in one day. If you join the tour and finish by 5 PM, you can then join the cruise on the river and catch the sunset depending on the time of year that you go.

Check for tickets on the Paris Big Bus Tour here .

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

Sorry, but no matter what the city it is very likely that you won’t find any restrooms. However, you can ask the driver or attendants on the bus to guide you. The wonderful thing about Paris is there are public restrooms available for just a euro.

When is the Best Time to Visit Paris

We went on the bus tour at the end of March for Spring break. The weather was a bit chilly and in the high 50s to low 60s. It was sunny, but not incredibly warm.

The prime months are April, May, September, and October when highs reach a comfortable 60-70°F (15-21°C).

Big Bus Tour Review

We purchased our tickets online using a smartphone after touring Notre Dame. Because the cathedral was one of the tour stops, we thought we were close, but the stop was a 7-minute walk away.

To add, the area was congested, and the instructions were confusing. After calling the tour company, we found the stop heading west but then learned that the bus stop was across the street and coming from the south direction.

Fortunately, we caught it in time and were able to get nice seats on the upper deck.

It was a sunny, cool day and one would think would be an excellent opportunity for photos. The problem for me is that I don’t have great photography skills and I was using my smartphone.

When we got to a landmark or icon, it was difficult to take a good shot due to the speed at which the bus traveled, bumps in the road, construction equipment, or overgrown trees, not to mention the hands, heads, and cameras of other passengers.

On our tour there were two routes in operation, the red route, and another color (which may no longer be available). The red route took about two hours to see everything. Then we had to exit the bus at the last stop to catch another bus that went into other neighborhoods.

The most interesting point on the second route was The Moulin Rouge. Otherwise, the sights were non-eventful, so we caught up on rest and napped on the lower level during the ride.

Overall, it was time well spent. And since we planned activities at a few of the attractions we had the chance to make up for bad photos taken on the bus.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in Paris

There are 10 stops on the red route and the buses will arrive in frequent intervals. During peak visiting months, like spring to summer, you can expect longer waits and slim pickings for a good seat.

3 – Notre Dame ( 3, Rue Lagrange (outside souvenir shop, opposite park entrance)

4 – Musée d’Orsay (58 Place Henry de Montherlant, facing the museum)

5 – Champs-Elysées (156, avenue des Champs-Elysées, facing the Arc de Triomphe)

6 – Grand Palais (Avenue Winston Churchill, facing Grand Palais and Petit Palais)

7 – Trocadéro (Avenue Paul Doumer, next to the Musée de l’Homme)

8- Tour Eiffel (Quai Branly, Entrée 2 Tour Eiffel, at the north pillar of the Eiffel Tower)

9 – Champ de Mars (Avenue Joseph Bouvard)

10 – Opéra Garnier (Facing 15 rue Scribe, next to the Roissy airport shuttle bus stop)

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The tour is pre-recorded and the audio narratives can be heard in English, French, Italian , Spanish, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Mandarin, and Korean.
  • Be mindful of potential traffic delays, especially during peak hours so that you can plan your tour for off-peak times to avoid congestion.
  • Be aware of any events that may alter the experience (rallies, protests, huge sports competitions).

I can’t emphasize the awareness of events enough. There was an enormous parade outside our hotel on one trip, and protests that caused the Champs Elysee to be boarded up during another trip.

Final Thoughts on the Paris Big Bus Tour

Overall, it was a pretty fun girls’ trip but the last thing I wated to do was spend most of our time and money riding the subway all over Paris.

The Big Bus is a no brainer if you want to see the best of Paris without wearing yourself out.

As a US citizen, I try to make the most of my visits to Europe.

The more countries I visit, the more I am convinced that I’ve made the best use of a 10-hour flight.

A quick trip to the Covent Garden in London, Venice , Italy, or any another country is always must for me.

And as always, you can see whether you are in New York , Paris, or Chicago , you experience so much in a short amount of time with a Big Bus Tour.

No one communicated this to us at all, it is not written on any literature and is showing as being in use on the map. It is stop 9. Because of this one of our party, who was only there for the day, missed getting off and seeing the Eiffel Tower. You need to communicate this. Also on day 1 the bus completely missed out stop 10 but on day 2 it stopped there. It all seems a bit hit and miss. Read more Written April 4, 2024

  • 937janined 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Alright if you want a whirlwind visit with limited time Not much to say really. It's a double-decker bus that you can get on and off at various stops around the city centre and view bits and pieces as you go. It was included with the Paris Pass and at the time we went they had a special promo on so we had 2 consecutive days instead of just the one day to journey. The buses themselves are pretty bog standard, not particularly pristine and there's more muzak than commentary with the complimentary, if somewhat intermittent, audio guide (earphones provided). I certainly wouldn't fork out over 40 Euros for this if it hadn't been included with my Pass - I just don't see the point of it. If you attempted to visit places whilst hopping off and on again, I don't think you'd end up with much actual visiting time anywhere. Read more Written March 21, 2024

Soon we’ll find ourselves on New Arbat, that was founded in 60-s, and was conceived as a government road. This New Arbat dramatically differs from the Old Arbat.

Patriarch Ponds

One more beloved place among the Muscovites with a very rich history. A lots of famous and outstanding personalities lived in this area: poets, scientists, militaries and even criminals. In 17 century Patriarch Hermogenus founded a Patriarch's village here, hence the name. Moreover, this place is famous all over the world thanks to the genius Russian writer M. Bulgakov. He chose Patriarch's ponds as the scene of his novel "The Master and Margarita".

Hermitage Garden

The next coziest and memorable place for all of Muscovites is Hermitage Garden. Before the Revolution it was a Bohemian place, frequently attended by the great actors and writers, art workers, and patrons. Here for the first time in Moscow a movie of Lumiere's brothers was shown. Today tradition continues and there are two theaters inside the park, lots of memorials and fun.

Museon Park & Gorky Park

Today Muscovites can't imagine their leisure activities without visiting Museon Statues Park and Gorky Park. These are fun areas. Take a look at Soviet monuments of Communist rulers, take a walk along the embankment, note what's wrong with the Peter's the Great monument, enjoy big musical fountain in Gorky park and observe how Russians spend their free time.

Crimean bridge

The last part of our Moscow bus tour you'll spend walking over the Crimean bridge. Long time ago on that place was a ford, which the Crimean Tatars used in order to attack Muscovy, that's why it was called Crimean. This hanging bridge is the one of a kind in Moscow. Moreover, it serves as a fabulous observation point, it is really a mysterious place.

On the tour you will find out:

  • why Stalin was mad when he saw the building of Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • how Muscovites truly call New Arbat;
  • the real reason why Bulgakov chose Patriarch's ponds as the scene where Devil arrived for the first time;
  • who suggested to build Moscow rings;
  • where are hidden all the gardens on the Garden Ring;
  • why Crimean bridge is very dangerous.

On the tour you will see:

  • Historical buildings of 19 century;
  • Stalin's Empire;
  • 4 out of 7 Stalin Skyscrapers;
  • Old and New Arbat;
  • Most popular Moscow Parks;
  • First electric street lamp in Moscow;
  • Main squares of the city;
  • Fascinating non touristy places;
  • Muscovites daily life and transportation.

Fun Facts from our Bus Tours:

What is the garden ring in moscow.

Actually, we call the Garden Ring  a series of streets, separated by the squares.

A great number of fascinating and historical places a re situated on the Garden Ring.  Traveling along that street, you can briefly learn about all main areas of Moscow, learn its history and meaning. It will help you to navigate Moscow better and surely you can feel more like a local on this tour.

Every square on the Garden Ring has its own historical background. For example, Sukharevskaya square in 19 century hosted a market. It was very popular among Muscovites, but usually stolen things were sold there. Often people had to buy there their own stuff again after it was stolen. The Smolenskaya, Crimean, Serpukhovskaya, Taganskaya squares were market places too.

Triumphalnaya square bears its name in memory of triumphal arch that stood here to commemorate the victory over Sweden, built by the order of Peter the Great, as well as Red Gate square placed another triumphal arch. In the beginning of 20 century Triumphal square was a cultural place. Several theaters were situated there, Meyerhold’s theater among them, a circus and a park.

Three squares of the Garden Ring became real battlefields during the revolution between the bolsheviks and tsar's supporters in 1917. And finally capitulation of royal regime was signed in the building, situated on the Garden Ring.

"And the Garden ring became a wedding ring to us…"

These are words from the official soundtrack to the very popular soviet movie "Moscow does not believe in tears" that has won an American Academy Award for the best foreign language film in 1980. Not coincidentally Garden Ring is mentioned in this song as a symbol of Moscow. As it is very important part of our city, it reflects all historical events beginning from the end of 16th century.

A Garden Ring? No. An earthern rampart!

The territory outside White city's wall was called Earthern city . The Earthern city was an area were traditionally poor citizens used to settle: peasants and craftsmen. In comparison with the White city this area has always been dirty and less prestigious. For example, in White city streets were paved in stone and buildings stood on the stone basements while Earthern city had only wooden houses.

This area was proclaimed as a part of Moscow only in 1593. And great fortification wooden wall, that surrounded the territory of Earthern city, was erected by the order of tsar Fyodor Ioannovich only in a year and was called "Skorodom" - fast-built house. Outside Skorodom was additionally fortificated with the moat and the rampart.

In Times of Troubles Skorodom was burnt down by Poles and restored by the Great Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich the Silent. Finally it had 57 towers and 11 entry gates.  Nowadays on that spots, where gates once stood, you can spot the main squares of Moscow.

Skorodom was destroyed and restored a lot's of times: during the Times of Troubles, Napoleon's invasion, in frequent Moscow fires. And finally in 1830 Skorodom was demolished as it lost its functions.

Miraculous transfiguration on Stalin’s orders

In 1917 the Great October revolution blew up everything that seemed to be right at that time. And in 1930-s Moscow was reconstructed… again. This time communists were making Moscow a model of communistic city. Surely that large-scale reconstruction touched the Garden Ring. The road was widened up to 60-70 meters, paved and became a ring with the help of new bridges: Crimean and Krasnokholmskiy. Since that time the Garden Ring is considered the main artery of Moscow.
