Theater Review: SIX THE MUSICAL (National Tour)
by William C. on June 14, 2023

THESE SIX QUEENS SLAY IT
The cast of Six riled up the audience at Segerstrom in this pop concert remix of Tudor history. Catchy earworms, check. Iconic costumes, check. American-Idol-esque belting moments, double-triple check. Thundering applause and cheers erupt from the crowd following every number? Check. Did I mention that the songs are earworms? It is almost impossible not to have the melodies repeat in your head days after watching the show.
Six is the marriage between Broadway and pop-star culture, with a healthy dose of history geek/fan culture (more on that later). This exciting combination enticed me to see its original Broadway production . Now, seeing the touring production, I am still convinced that shows such as Six revitalize the musical as a genre. I just simply love how writers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss (Moss co-directed with Jamie Armitage ) can be so playful and irreverent with history. And judging by the enthusiastic response from the audience, people attend to party with the fabulous ladies on stage.
The musical follows Henry VIII’s marriage to his six ex-wives. Aside from the opening and closing numbers, you get a series of autobiographical numbers in chronological order about each wife’s trauma/abuse in the hands of their shared husband. Drawn from pop diva icons of our present times, each queen’s song, choreography, and looks are nuanced and yet familiar. For example, Kelly Denice Taylor as Catherine of Aragon: Her costume, music, and vocal range are strongly reminiscent of Beyoncé, the queen bee of American pop music. In her tear-jerking number “Heart of Stone, ” Natalie Paris as Jane Seymour has timbral similarities to Adele’s hit songs. She is also the only one on stage rocking a British accent.
The six ex-wives are gathered on stage for competition to see who has suffered the most in their marriage to Henry VIII. This pain-Olympics is a strong decision as a plotline device. Still, this combination of pop cultural mimicry with the backdrop of a stage competition is equivalent to a thematic cosplay competition and all the fan banter that goes with it (except with original songs). Similar comparisons exist in other fandoms that drive a deep wedge among its citizens: “Who is the ultimate speedster? Superman or The Flash?” or “If Ninja and Pirates fight, who would win?” Both sides would argue it out at a Comic-Con fan forum with ludicrous arguments, truth bomb droppings, and cheesy jabs at each side. So, as these queens sang their hearts out and threw cheap shots and one-liners at each other, I was transformed back to Comic-Con. As a geek, I am obsessed with this open display of geek culture. Is it a suitable plot device? No. Absolutely not. But is it engaging and hilarious? Hell yeah.
The whole cast and the all-female band are superbly talented. And it is pretty fantastic to see an entire cast of ladies that are unapologetically kicking ass on stage, aided by by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille ‘s Vogue-like choreography . Gabriela Carrillo as Catherine Parr really stood out above the crowd. There is a sharpness and attitude to her movement that just gives her a choreographic edge. As Anna of Cleves, Alivia Donalson has the most infectious laughter and stage presence. Special mention to Kelly Denise Taylor and Erin Ramirez for stepping into the Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn role. They were both fabulous.
Tim Deiling ‘s over-the-top lights have really lent to the party atmosphere of the performance, while offering a substantial dramaturgical role in the story. And, aside from our bombastic leads, perhaps the most exciting people on the stage are the tight band, endearingly named The Ladies in Waiting, whose drummer Paige Durr brought the show to another level with her great solos and excellent stage presence.
Six the Musical is really different. The show has a closer blood-tie to K-pop concerts than musical comedies. And why not? We need something extra on stage, and if it takes the form of six fabulously dressed queens (by Tony-winner Gabriella Slade ), I am here for it. Now, go watch some queen slay! Actual beheadings not included.

Six things to know about ‘Six’ before its Portland run

The wives of Henry VIII tell their stories in "Six," arriving July 25 at Portland's Keller Auditorium. Joan Marcus
- Lee Williams | Special to The Oregonian/OregonLive
Listen up, Portland. British history’s about to get overthrown. Come July 25, the musical we’ve been waiting for since Showtime axed “The Tudors” kicks off its six-day reign at the Keller Auditorium.
“Six” reimagines the wives of King Henry VIII as a Spice Girl-sounding pop group, reuniting for a high-octane, high-octave concert confessional.
A monster hit on London’s West End and then Broadway (where it captured Tony Awards for its costume design and score), “Six” has taken the rest of the world by Beatles-esque storm, with productions launched in Sydney, Australia, and Seoul, South Korea, and soon Hungary, the Netherlands and Poland.
There are actually two North American tours at the moment; we get the original, dubbed the “Aragon Tour.” The show’s run at the Keller is already sold out. But you still have a chance to score seats. A lottery for $36 tickets closes Friday, July 21 .
I recently spoke by phone with Natalie Paris, who portrays Henry VIII’s third wife Jane Seymour (“the only one he truly loved”) and Courtney Mack, the king’s fifth wife, Katherine Howard (“K Howard is here, and the fun’s begun”) to get the royal dish on the majestic musical.
Here are six takeaways you need to know.
Think “Six” is a knockoff of “Hamilton”? Guess again
Khaila Wilcoxon as Catherine of Aragon (center) in The North American SIX Aragon Tour. Joan Marcus
The curse of every new historical musical is that it inevitably will be compared to Lin Manuel-Miranda’s revolutionary masterpiece “Hamilton.”
“It’s not a bad thing. ‘Hamilton’ is incredible!” said Paris. “I think people use the comparison to ‘Hamilton’ just because it’s a piece of history that’s being told in a really modern and fresh way. But, actually, the concepts of the shows are totally different.”
For one thing, “Six” is not a conventional book musical following an intricate, linear plot.
Playwrights/composers Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss structured their hummable her-story as a singing competition among Henry VIII’s wives. While belting out their biographies, the queens are backed on stage by the “Ladies in Waiting,” an all-female, four-piece band.
“Six” spotlights “women in history that didn’t get any sort of recognition,” said Mack. “Their only claim to fame is that they married the same man. It’s their personalized stories, and you get to learn about each queen, and learn about their history, instead of their history with Henry.”
The tour includes “Six” OG royalty
Paris rocked the role of Jane Seymour for the record-breaking original run of “Six” on London’s West End, which is still going.
Mack has been with “Six” since it first hit U.S. stages, performing in pre-Broadway productions in Chicago and other cities, and then as an alternate in the Broadway show. Both joined this tour in May.
Paris said she “literally had no idea” the British musical would burst into a cross-continental blockbuster.
“In this industry, when you get a job, it’s exciting. But you don’t ever think ‘This is going to be the next global phenomenon,’” Paris said. “You never think that the show that you’re doing is going to explode, even though you believe in what you’re doing and you think it’s great. It was very unexpected for us.”
Though she’s played Seymour on and off for about six years (including early workshop versions of “Six”), “There’s so much to continuously learn” about her character, she said, particularly when different actresses step into the “Six” mix.
“It’s a great show as an audience member, but also being on stage with other incredible women, and the empowerment that comes with all of that,” said Paris. “Everyone brings an essence of themselves to the part, so it feels really exciting and new when you come to it with new queens.”
Alternates were the heroes of “Six” on Broadway during COVID spikes
Courtney Mack as Katherine Howard in the North American Aragon Tour of SIX. Patrick Gray
Out of necessity, the alternates for the Broadway production of “Six” had to learn the roles of three queens. As the COVID-19 Omicron variant raced through the Great White Way during the 2021-22 season, these actors often took over roles just before a performance — or even during one.
“I went on mid-show,” said Mack, who in addition to Katherine Howard, knows the parts of Catharine Parr and Anne Boleyn by heart. “I was knitting a baby blanket backstage and I had a blanket wrapped around my legs — I couldn’t have been more relaxed — and then our stage manager over the loudspeaker said, ‘Courtney, get into wig prep, get your makeup on.’ And I did the rest of the show. I was grateful that it was Howard because she’s lived with me for such a long time.”
“It is an amazing feeling afterwards,” Mack said. “The moment that you’re in it is terrifying because you’re like, ‘I didn’t do the things that I needed to do before the show’. But after it’s done you’re like, ‘Wow, I can do anything!’”
The queens were inspired by queens of pop
Natalie Paris as Jane Seymour in the North American Aragon Tour of "Six." Patrick Gray/KabikPhotoGroup.com
In vocal styles and costuming, the show’s creators crafted their six leads around the instantly recognizable female rulers of contemporary music. (They call this “Queenspiration.”)
So, for example, Catherine of Aragon exudes the fierceness of Beyoncé; and Jane Seymour brings the elegance and money notes of Celine Dion and Adele to the Keller.
K Howard is “known as the sexy one, the Britney Spears/Ariana Grande-type,” Mack said. “Which is kind of true. But I think there’s more to her. She’s just so young and so naive and has a playful side to her.”
Those iconic Queenspirations can be a double-edged sword.
Mack met a group of fans at a recent Los Angeles show who were dressed as the “Six” queens. “And they all had different names on the backs of these little capes that they were wearing. One guy goes, ‘Oh, you got the slutty one, that’s who I am!’” Mack said. “OK. Um, I guess… ‘Thank You?’” Mack chuckled.
“Heart of Stone” is not a “Stand by Your Man” moment
Midway through the show, Jane Seymour sings the ballad “Heart of Stone.”
“All the numbers before that we’ve been giving sass and fun, and there’s so much choreography and so much going on, and then I stand and sing a sad song,” said Paris.
The song begins with these lyrics:
You’ve got a good heart
But I know it changes
A restless tide, untamable
You came my way, and I knew a storm could come too
You’d lift me high, or let me fall
But I took your hand, promised I’d withstand
Any blaze you blew my way
In a show about six women finding agency and their own voice away from a cruel husband, this may well sound like a stand-by-your-monarch declaration of love.
It’s not that simple, said Paris.
“I’ve never really called it a love ballad,” Paris said. “I see it more as Jane showing her strength actually because I think what she’s saying is that she went into this knowing what could happen, and also knowing that his intentions were getting a son, and the confusion behind whether she was the one he truly loved because he truly loved her, or whether it was because she managed to give him a son. But I think the point is that she went in knowing all of that and she still stuck to her guns. And she was loyal. To me, that’s strength.”
Another emotional layer unfurled in the number is the queen’s longing for her son “that she, unfortunately, never got to see,” added Paris.
Tudor schmooder: You don’t have to be an English history scholar to dig the show
Olivia Donalson as Anna of Cleves (center) in The North American SIX Aragon Tour. Joan Marcus
Whether you aced that unit on Henry VIII’s reign in European history class or you’ve never heard of Anna of Cleves, you’re good to go for “Six.”
“The way that the show is written and how modern it is, and the genius of Toby and Lucy’s work is that it’s so relatable to any audience,” said Paris.
Audiences, Paris said, can connect “in some way with what each queen is saying and talking about and feeling, whether that’s just like, ‘You go girl!” or whether that’s ‘Oh, wow, I feel that strength. I’ve gone through loss and I can relate.’”
“And it’s fun as well,” added Paris. “There’s six queens and then four band members — all women, on the stage — and you can’t help but go away and feel inspired.”

How 'Six' in the West End took over the world
From the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to the West End and Broadway, here’s how Six took over the musical theatre world.
We all know about Henry VIII, the Tudor monarch who, during his 24-year reign, married six women. The sextet of ladies were previously consigned to the history books under the simple rhyme: “divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived.” But what became of the six women? And more importantly, why was all the focus on Henry VIII?
Enter Six . The chart-topping musical shines a spotlight on Henry’s wives, allowing them to take to the mic and share their stories with a girl-power pop flair. The six wives now have musical personas: this celebration of female empowerment channels Beyoncé, Adele, Alicia Keys, and more. Six continues to take over the West End and Broadway, and the original Six album has clocked up over 100 million streams. But how did Six develop into a 21st-century musical smash-hit?
Check out all the Six productions and milestones throughout history, all the way from early performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to its Broadway debut that triumphed at the 2022 Tony Awards.
Book Six tickets on London Theatre.
2017: Six at Cambridge University
The two Six creators, Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow, penned Six while in their final year of university. Moss’s studies mainly focused on feminist history, while Marlow read English. Moss and Marlow were offered the opportunity to take a musical up to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe through their university’s musical theatre society. Together, they created a musical based on the lives of the six women who married Henry VIII.
2017: Six at Edinburgh Festival Fringe
After creating the musical, Moss and Marlow took Six for a cold run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Six received a plethora of positive reviews, with critics praising the show’s feminist take and tight choreography.
The original Six cast featured Megan Gilbert as Catherine of Aragon, Ashleigh Weir as Anne Boleyn, Holly Musgrave as Jane Seymour, Tilda Wickham as Anna of Cleves, Annabel Marlow (Toby Marlow’s younger sister) as Katherine Howard, and Shimali de Silva as Catherine Parr.
2017: Six in the West End
Following the Six success in Scotland, Six played a limited engagement at the Arts Theatre. A new Six cast joined the musical for London performances: Renée Lamb as Catherine of Aragon, Christina Modestou as Anne Boleyn, Natalie Paris as Jane Seymour, Genesis Lynea as Anna of Cleves, Aimie Atkinson as Katherine Howard, and Izuka Hoyle as Catherine Parr. If you’re listening to the original Six cast recording, you'll hear this London cast sing.
The first Six London performance took place on 18 Dec. 2017 and ran for four performances during one week. After initial performances, two more were added, totting up to ... six performances. During the West End run, the “megasix” was added. It’s a final medley of songs in the show, and audiences are encouraged to film the curtain call.
2018: Six begins its first UK tour
After London performances, Six played a nationwide tour, which began in Norwich. Natalie Paris and Aimie Atkinson continued with the show. The company included five new members: Jarneia Richard-Noel as Catherine of Aragon, Millie O’Connell as Anne Boleyn, Alexia McIntosh as Anna of Cleves, Maiya Quansah-Breed as Catherine Parr, as Grace Mouat as an alternate.
Six played in regional theatres before returning to Edinburgh Festival Fringe for a second year — a decision which sent the musical’s popularity into the stratosphere.
2018: Six returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Six played a sold-out monthlong run at the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, performing in the Underbelly. During the festival, Six gained a legion of celebrity fans including Graham Norton, Phillip Schofield, and Michelle Visage, as well as picking up a theatre community buzz.
2019: Six begins an open-ended West End run
After two festivals and a nationwide tour, Six eventually began its open-ended run at the Arts Theatre. Six commenced Arts Theatre performances in January 2019 and would eventually play at the Arts Theatre to March 2020, when performances were cancelled due to the pandemic.
2019: Six takes over the Olivier Awards
A few months into its West End run, Six received five Olivier Award nominations: Best New Musical, Outstanding Achievement in Music, Best Theatre Choreographer, Best Costume Design, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical (for all six lead company members). Even though Six didn’t win any Oliviers, the ceremony introduced the musical to a wider audience and affirmed its multi-generational popularity.
2019: Six heads to North America
Following the West End success, it didn’t take too long for Six to travel Stateside. The North American premiere of Six took place at Chicago’s Shakespeare Theater in May 2019. Following Chicago, Six transferred to the American Repertory Theater in Boston in August 2019, and then made its Canadian premiere at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton in November 2019.
2019: Six is performed on cruiseships
Even if you were going on holiday, you could still see Six . In 2019, Six was commissioned onboard three Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Six is still performed on select cruiseliners today!
2019: Six tours the United Kingdom
If you couldn’t make it to the West End to see Six in 2019, you could see Six at regional theatres. Six started a UK tour on 24 Oct. 2019 at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford. The musical is still on tour today and is currently on its third cycle of touring cast members.
2020: Six in Australia
It was time for the Tudor queens to go down under at some point. Six made its Australasian premiere at Sydney Opera House before playing across Canberra, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, and New Zealand.
2020: Six heads to Broadway
It was a tough time for Six on Broadway at first. After Six began performances in March 2020, the original opening night was cancelled the night Broadway theatres shut — 12 Mar. 2020. Thankfully, that wasn’t it for this ruling show. Six reopened at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on 17 Sept. 2021 and continues to play in New York.
2021: Six at the Lyric Theatre
A year into the pandemic, Six was one of the first musicals to reopen in the West End. Six moved London venues, though, transferring from the Arts Theatre to the Lyric Theatre, a larger performance space.
2021: Six at the Vaudeville Theatre
Six didn’t play at the Lyric Theatre for too long. Six moved into its current home, the Vaudeville Theatre, in September 2021. It’s considered the musical’s “forever home.” Six is currently running at the Vaudeville Theatre through April 2023.
2022: Six tours the United States
There’s no way US audiences would miss out on Six . After the West End production went on tour, the Broadway show soon followed suit. Six began its debut US tour — dubbed the Aragon Tour after Henry VIII’s first wife — at the CIBC Theatre in Chicago.
2022: Six at the Tony Awards
Six received eight Tony Award nominations: Best Musical, Best Costume Design in a Musical, Best Lighting Design in a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, and Best Original Score. During the ceremony, Six walked away with two awards: Best Costume and Best Original Score. Find out more about Six at the Tony Awards.
2022: Six performances at Hampton Court
In June 2022, the Olivier-nominated cast of Six return to their roles to star in two performances at Hampton Court Palace. There’s plenty of Tudor history attached to the English palace, as Henry VIII lived there during his rule. We wonder what Henry would say about his wives getting all the attention centuries later.
2022: Six musical film
The Olivier-nominated Six cast will also star in the Six musical film , which is being recorded at the Vaudeville Theatre. The Six recording will take place in late June 2022, culminating in an audience performance on 1 July 2022. It’s unknown when the Six film will be released, but we can’t wait to watch it already!
