Tips for Choosing the Best Safari Shirt

Divergent Travelers on safari in Africa - Best Safari Shirt

Color Choice Matters

Choosing the color of your safari shirt is more than just a style preference. Certain colors and patterns can attract unwanted attention from both wildlife and people.

That is why understanding the potential repercussions of your color choices is so important. Here are some colors to avoid and some to consider before you buy them.

COLORS TO AVOID:

  • Bright colors including white:  When you are out in the brush, scouting for animals the last thing you want is to be flashy. Bright colors, especially red and including white, can be seen from far away in the desert wilderness and can alert the wildlife you are hoping to catch a glimpse of.  The last thing you want is to be the reason everyone’s safari is a bust. Instead, try for more neutral tones.
  • Blue: Blue is another important color to avoid especially if you are on safari in Eastern Africa. This is because blue is known to attract the tsetse fly. Tsetses can transmit diseases that can cause severe illness, so it is best to take the appropriate measures to avoid them as much as possible.
  • Black: Black is another color that should be avoided on safari. Like blue, black has been proven to attract tsetse flies and it also absorbs the strong heat from the desert sun which can lead to its own health risks.
  • Camouflage: While camouflage is more of a pattern than a color, and may help you blend into the natural environment, it is still best to avoid. In most African countries camouflage is associated with soldiers and the military. You don’t want to confuse people as to your purpose on Safari or become an unnecessary target in potentially hostile areas.

COLORS TO WEAR:

  • Khaki, Brown & Tan: Khaki, brown and tan are the recommended colors when out on Safari. These colors will help you blend into the environment especially during the dry season which will help increase your odds of an animal sighting.  Beyond that, the roads you will be traveling are dirt and can be extremely dusty. This dust will settle in your clothing and chances are you won’t be finding a laundry mat anywhere nearby. Tan, khaki and brown colored shirts have the ability to conceal dirt and keep you looking fresh even after a full day excursion.
  • Dark Browns & Greens: During the rainy season, the vegetation becomes lusher and the soil becomes darker from the moisture. If going on Safari during this time, you may want to consider darker browns and/or greens as a better way to blend in. Make sure to do your research on the area you will be traveling to, so you can evaluate which season they may currently be experiencing.

Materials to Consider

The best safari shirts are going to be those made to combat harsh environments. They need to be durable, lightweight, resistant to the sun, quick to dry and have the ability to protect against bugs.

All of these elements start with the type of material the shirt is made from. Here are some of the pros and cons of the most popular materials used in safari shirts.

Synthetic materials are man-made fabrics like nylon or polyester. These tend to be extremely lightweight, great at wicking away moisture and quick to dry even when soaked all of the way through.

Safari shirts made from these fabrics are soft to the touch making them tremendously comfortable in any environment. They are also thin which helps you to stay cool even when wearing long sleeves to avoid sun exposure.

The downside to synthetics is that they are not great at trapping in heat. This is a concern as most safari’s drives are done at dawn and dusk when the desert is at its coolest.

These are also the times of day that mosquitoes, gnats and flies are at their prime and the thinness of synthetics offers little protection. That is why if you choose the synthetic option it is best to use these safari shirts with layers to make up for these weaknesses.

PROS:

  • Moisture-wicking
  • Lightweight
  • Quick-drying

CONS:

  • Best in warm weather
  • Less durability
  • Less protection against bugs

walking safari in Africa - Best Safari Shirt

Cotton is the most accessible fabric used in most shirts we find at the store. It is cheap to manufacture and is one of the softest materials we can put on our bodies. It has the ability to trap body heat keeping you much warmer than your average synthetic and comes in every style you can imagine.

That being said, the downfall of cotton is moisture. It does not have the inherent ability to wick away sweat like nylon or polyester and will take forever to dry if caught in a downpour.

This is why cotton is never recommended for other outdoor activities such as hiking. If you get caught in an afternoon rainstorm and stay out in the Sahara once the heat of the sun dissipates, you may run the risk of hypothermia on the ride home. Or at the very least extreme discomfort.

  • Soft and extremely comfortable

CONS:

  • Retains moisture
  • Takes a long time to dry
  • Can be too warm in peak heat

David Stock on safari in Zimbabwe

Natural materials

Natural materials have made their way into much of outdoor apparel, so it only makes sense that they are found in Safari shirts as well. Materials such as hemp, linen, and wool fall under this category and each come with strengths and weaknesses.

Natural fabrics are responsibly sourced without producing as much waste through their manufacturing. They tend to be highly durable (especially hemp) and are well suited for a variety of environments.

However, due to their organic nature, these materials tend to lead to a more expensive product. Also, all of these natural materials are much more prone to wrinkling, wool and hemp can be too warm during peak heat hours and linen offers little protection against bugs.

PROS:

  • Reasonably sourced and recyclable
  • Highly durable
  • Extremely warm
  • Expensive
  • Prone to wrinkling

UV Protection

When spending any amount of time in desert climates, protection from the sun should be a major concern. Here there is very little to protect your skin against the harsh rays, that is why you need to rely on your clothing. You may believe that as long as you are covered UV radiation cannot reach you, but that is not always the case.

A standard cotton t-shirt can let in more than 20% of UV radiation, which is a lot if you are planning for extended exposure while on Safari. That is why you want to look for shirts with a UPF, or UV protection factor, rating.

This indicates what percentage of UV-rays can penetrate through any given fabric. UPF rating of at least 30 is recommended in a Safari shirt, and if you can find one with a UPF rating of 50, which will protect you against 99% of UV-radiation, it will definitely be worth the extra money.

Gear Review: Outdoor Research SoDo Shirt – The Only “Safari Shirt” You Need

By Contributing Editor Steve Casimiro, editor of Adventure Journal . See more of Casimiro's gear recommendations in our Ultimate Hiking and Camping Gear Guide > >

There’s a reason why what I call the "safari shirt" hasn’t changed substantively since Hemingway was shooting elephants in it: The lessons learned from a hundred or more years of use across the wildest hot-weather terrain in the world are every bit as valid today. And while I have a whole closet full of these kinds of shirts, one of my favorite’s is Outdoor Research’s SoDo ($68).

A month or so ago, I headed into the Mojave Desert for a couple nights of backpacking and the SoDo was the only on top I took. During the day, when temps climbed well into the 90s, I rolled down the sleeves and protected my arms with its SPF50 coverage and turned up the collar to keep the sun off the back of my neck. Hanging in the shade, I simply rolled the sleeves all the way up. And when night’s cooling temperatures arrived, made colder by the strong gusting winds, I rolled them back down and took advantage of the nylon shirt’s wind resistance.

Some safari shirts pack so many pockets you don’t want to wear them anywhere but into the bush, but the OR version has just two pockets and once of them is zippered and hidden behind a flap. The effect is much more subtle and gives the shirt a chameleon quality—you can wear it to dinner, wear it to travel, and you don’t need a pith helmet accompaniment.

The SoDo has mesh arm pit vents and mesh lining on the shoulders to enable a skoch of circulation. It’s not huge, but it helps. And the nylon dries reasonably quickly, though not in an instant. Indeed, as the styling of the shirt makes it more versatile, so does the weight—the SoDo isn’t the lightest or fastest drying shirt in my closet, but whatever it gives up in the hottest temps you get back in the cooler ones. Very rarely is it overwhelmed; much more common is that it’s the one and only shirt you need.

For classic safari shirts Lost Worlds has patterned very authentic shirts and bush coats. A hand full of different materials are available (IIRC a poplin rip stop too) If someone were dressing the cast of move about 1970s Rhodesia, this would be the place to shop. TAG (not to be confused with TAD) also make authentic safari shirts; old Willis and Geiger knock offs I have a couple Filson "safari" shirts, one with and one w/o epaulets. I prefer w/o. (in Boston, shirts w/ epaulets can draw a lot of unwanted attention from guys who insist on being called by their full first name) TADs Overland Shirt is very clever contemporary safari type shirt (epaulet less). Only problem is the pretentious zippered passport pocket on the tail, I have taken a stitch ripper to mine.... TADs Work Shirts (NLA) are my favorite shirts for wear in Central America. Heavy duty cotton, short sleeved, hangs correct length (for outside the pants wear), and has generous pockets with easy open buttons. Shirt is very low key and doesn't say tourist.

I started this thread way back in 2015. Since then, I'm very embarrassed to admit I have only browsed the forum intermittently without posting. This is LONG overdue but thanks to everyone who responded. I eventually settled on 2 different shirts I felt were close to ideal for my purpose. For our Cooler months the Cabelas Serengeti Safari II shirt was great. Well, it was great after I had a local tailor remove the large shoulder epaulets. The shirt was comfortable, had nice pockets, held up great in the washer, has never torn, or shown any loose stitching. For casual wear the shirt had a nice quality look as well. The other great thing is they were available in Tall sizes, something I needed. Now the bad part. What has happened to Cabelas is a real Tragedy! Since the BassPro buyout they have discontinued almost everything that was sold by Cabelas including the Safari shirts. I have never been a fan of the BassPro stuff, most items have a cheap Wal-Mart feel to them. Thankfully, I bought three of the Cabelas Serengeti Safari II shirts in different colors before they stopped making them. One now has a bad stain from some splashed wood finish during a weekend project. The other two I hope last me a long time. In the Warmer months here in the southeast temps climb into the 90's with a humidity to match! The Cabelas Shirts were just too warm for me to wear without sweating. So I swapped over to the Magellan Laguna shirt sold by Academy. The shirts are available in Tall sizes, are lightweight synthetic and quick drying. They are also very affordable and come in many colors. They are also great for fishing or the beach when sunscreen will cause a cotton shirt to stick to your skin. The only problems I have had is some fading on the colors due to washing. Also the threads in the stitching will sometimes fray a bit, but none have come loose. For the price they are a great value. I only wish they came in a version without the vented back. It may help a bit with range of motion, but I've never felt like they actually permitted much airflow. If anything new has come on the market recently, feel free to post a suggestion. I plan to be more active as a forum member from now on. .

I like the Ex Officio air strip shirts. Found one for $4 with a stain on it at a thrift store....stain washed right out. Have since picked up 3 more on Ebay. I use them in the summer when hot instead of sun screen. Didn't think long sleeves in the summer would work, but it seems to be cooler than the sun beating on my skin with sunscreen all over. Dry really quickly and light weight. They did change the material at some point, as I have 2 different material composition percentages on my shirts.

I highly recommend the TAD Highland shirt for cooler weather, it's wool, breathes great, and wicks moisture well (it also just came along with me for a 3 week backpacking trip through Europe.) Then for warmer weather, the TAD Latitude Field shirt is great, super breathable, strong ripstop, vented mesh armpits, and also has buttoned rollup sleeves for when it gets really hot out. Perfect for the South Carolina summers here.

Good info...hence why I used to be a medium and now I am a small. As much as I would like to think its because I chiseled, I'm not as lean as I once was but sizing is definitely different these days.

What’s a good African Safari Shirt to protect against biting tsetse flys and nats?

Andrew62

To ward off tsetse flies you best wear something cotton and with some weight to it. They can easily bite through a nylon type of shirt, trust me, I learned this in Uganda this year.

I wear long sleeve cotton t's from Bass Pro Shop, I buy 10 or more at a time, all drab colors, comfortable, protects me from the sun (melanoma survivor) I can use them as a rag if needed, as they are cheap. They aren't too hot despite being cotton. I have probably 30 of them in my drawer. The more I travel the simpler I get, no more fancy clothes for me. Simple shoes, shorts or pants and cotton t's
