Congratulations! You just recently found out that you are pregnant, but have you decided on an OB-GYN yet? Any clue about the costs of delivery? Admission? What about the support classes that they provide? Luckily, Singapore’s maternity care is one of the best in the world.

In Singapore, hospitals in both the private and public sectors are typically safe and reliable. Deciding between both is generally a matter of choice, as both systems deliver top-of-the-line medical care. The extremely low infant mortality rates in Singapore verify the high-quality of the medical systems in place. This article will guide you through the advantages and disadvantages of both, and hopefully, assist you in your decision-making process.

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE A PUBLIC HOSPITAL? The largest benefit of going public is the affordability factor. Costs are generally lower than those in private hospitals, as public hospitals are usually subsidized by the government. You will pay even less if you are a Singaporean citizen! Another advantage is that public hospitals are usually better equipped to deal with birth and delivery complications . (more…)

Hospital Maternity Tours in Singapore: Thomson Medical Centre & National University Hospital

By Pei Xin Leong

nuh hospital maternity tour

We’ve come to the last instalment of 10 hospital maternity tours in Singapore! One of these is my choice. It’s also the only maternity hospital here to offer mums-to-be the option of a water birth . Can you tell which one it is? If none of these two hospitals catch your fancy, check the other eight out. You’re sure to find one that will suit you (and the bub) best. The links are at the end of this article. Here’s wishing you a blissful pregnancy, birth, and motherhood!

Thomson Medical Centre

339 Thomson Road, Singapore 307677. Tel: 6250 2222

Bit of trivia: I was born in Thomson Medical Centre. Since the last time I stepped foot in here was a quarter of a century ago, I was excited to be back with the possibility of giving birth here myself. And since I couldn’t have remembered how the hospital stay was as a newborn, it was a unique experience visiting and learning more about the hospital I was delivered at through fresh eyes.

Thomson Medical Centre is a compact medical facility nested along Thomson Road. Wooden furnishings and clever lighting create a warm, homely ambience throughout the hospital.

A benefit to being compact is that patients don’t need to walk through long corridors just to get from one place to another. Enter the hospital through the main lobby and you’ll easily find the Patient Business Centre, the ParentCraft Centre, the gift shop, the pharmacy and Delifrance. This might just be psychological, but should I be admitted into the hospital about to pop i.e. in late labour, it would give me great peace of mind to know that I’ll reach the delivery ward in no time at all.

Hydrotherapy tubs for water immersion during labour

TMC has 12 delivery rooms and six operating theaters for C-section births . While it doesn’t offer water births, two of its delivery rooms come with a hydrotherapy tub for water immersion, a pre-birth procedure where the mom stays in water throughout her contractions and only gets out of the water tub for the birth itself. Water immersion helps in pain relief and is a natural alternative to medical means such as epidurals.

Thomson - Delivery Suite with Hydrobath

Should you be considering TMC for your baby’s birth, you’d be pleased to know that despite appearances, the hospital’s maternity rooms are generously sized. In fact, its standard 1-BD room seems to be sized around that of a suite in other hospitals!

Thomson - Single-Bedded

Each ward has individual temperature control. If you do not wish to be disturbed, you can even ask for a “Privacy Please” door tag.

Thomson - Two-bedded

There are three floors of labour and maternity wards, Levels 3, 5 and 6, with a nursery attached to each. I find this a wonderful idea because Mummy and Baby won’t be too far apart! In addition, it’s easier for the nursing staff to manage as well.

TMC encourages rooming-in, so after Baby is tagged, he or she will be wheeled in with Mummy to bond. Overnight rooming-in of Baby is also allowed as long as it’s not too tiring on Mum. Does the same apply to shared wards? Yes, the hospital is flexible as long as your roommate doesn’t mind.

For the ultimate pampering experience, you could also opt to stay in one of the hospital’s suites. Do note that suites are not covered under maternity packages and will be billed ala carte. Here’s a quick look:

Premier Deluxe Suite.

Patients enjoy concessionary parking with the number of coupons issued based on bed type. Two coupons are issued to patients staying in 4-bedded rooms, and three coupons are issued to patients staying in Premier Single, Single, or 2-bedded rooms.

Food options include Delifrance and the staff cafeteria which is open from 9.30am to 5pm. You can also bus to Novena Square, or walk across the road for local food at Balestier and Whampoa.

Cost of tour: Free Cost of 1-BD normal delivery 2-day stay: $3,036.66 (excludes doctor’s fee)

National University Hospital

5 Lower Kent Ridge Rd, Singapore 119074. Tel: 6779 5555

As this hospital provides the only option for water birth (update: as of March 2024, the water births service is currently unavailable) in Singapore, NUH is my choice!

Each of its 12 delivery rooms is alternately equipped with water birth facilities in its ensuite bathrooms. Its deluxe delivery suite even comes with a built-in water tub. Exercise balls are also available on hand should Mummy require them for relaxation and pain relief. I like that the hospital has made the bathrooms spacious. After all, there will be a sizable medical team inside during the water birth: the doctor, the midwives and your doula , if you choose to have one.

NUH - Deluxe Delivery Suite (edited)

NUH TOILET

NUH’s deluxe delivery suite comes with a built-in water tub to facilitate water births.

NUH - Standard Delivery Suite

While some other hospitals allow doulas in the delivery room as long as you pre-registration yours (most of them) and some do not allow doulas at all (Mt Elizabeth (Orchard), NUH not only allows doulas, the hospital also offers its own alternative: Emma Care nurses.

Emma Care Service at NUH

Short for Enhanced Midwifery Maternity Care, Emma Care nurses provide a unique holistic approach to childbirth and labour. Emma Care nurses accompany you on your journey during pregnancy and post delivery as well. That includes prenatal and postnatal clinic appointments, coaching your hubby to provide the support you need as a new mom, and nursing care and support during labour.

So your Emma Care nurse is more like a friend who also happens to be a trained nurse and midwife. Having somebody who understands your birth preferences and has the medical knowledge to back your decisions in the delivery room means a lot in terms of reassurance and emotional support. I like it!

For many mums (and dads), cost is not so much a concern as privacy and the option to lodge are. Hence the 1-BD rooms are often in high demand. NUH has 18 1-BD rooms. We hear that you have an 80 to 85% chance of getting one if you’ve requested for it during preregistration. Of course, there’s no guarantee, so please do not fume at the nurses if you don’t get one.

NUH - 1BD 2 (edited)

The 1-BD maternity room. Pretty spacious, don’t you think?

Each 1-BD room comes with a sofa bed, a TV set, a desk, and a couch for one person. Lodging is $37.45 (without meals) or $64.20 (with 3 meals) per day.

NUH - 4BD

4-BD maternity room. Baby is allowed to room in with you at night in shared wards too.

Parking shouldn’t be a problem with 330 lots in Carpark D and 390 lots at the Medical Centre. The maximum rate is $18 for a full day of parking. If you are rushed to the hospital in mid-labour, the Dad-to-be can leave the car with the valet ($6 per entry).

There are plenty of amenities for visitors. These include food places, Duyi bookstore with a florist counter, and 7-Eleven.

NUH - squirrel playground

The squirrel playground outside the Children’s Clinic (Level 4) is a great place for the kids.

Cost of tour: Free Cost of 1-BD normal delivery 2-day stay: $3,110.50 to $4,608.50 (includes doctor’s fee)

Where to deliver your baby: Maternity hospitals in Singapore

Where to deliver your baby: Maternity hospitals in Singapore

With 10 maternity hospitals in Singapore, deciding where you want to deliver your baby can be pretty overwhelming, whether you are a first-time parent or not.

Should you splurge on an upmarket maternity hospital package with five-star perks or go with the more cost-effective one? A nearer hospital or one that is further away, but offers water birthing option?

While some of the five-star perks may seem tempting, it is also important to do your sums beforehand . Additionally, find out if the hospital has a multidisciplinary team to deal with high-risk and complicated pregnancies and newborn issues.

These considerations are especially important if you are in a high-risk pregnancy or have other medical issues.

To get a better idea of your estimated hospital bill size for a normal birth, visit the Ministry of Health website .

Other important things to consider when choosing a maternity hospital: Services such as a supportive parentcraft centre and follow-up support after discharge.

You may also wish to consider if the hospital is accredited as a baby-friendly hospital under the World Health Organization’s Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) . Hospitals that are BFHI-accredited meet best practice standards in supporting mums to breastfeed successfully.

Covid-19 situation: What mums need to know about choosing a hospital

Ideally, you should pick your hospital well ahead of time around the seventh or eighth month of your pregnancy.

Mary Jane Sangalang, deputy manager at Raffles Hospital’s maternity ward, says being in an environment where you feel relaxed helps you cope with labour better, which is why it is advisable to tour the maternity facilities before your delivery day.

However, with the ongoing Covid-19 situation, maternity tours in all the hospitals have been temporarily suspended.

Most of the hospitals offer virtual tours, so you can still check out the delivery and maternity suites online before you commit if you have to make a decision soon. (Check out the links below.)

Before deciding on a hospital, mums should also check that their preferred gynaecologist-obstetrician is practising at their hospital of choice.

This is because the Ministry of Health has directed doctors in the public sector to restrict their work to one hospital to reduce the risk of cross-institutional transmission of the novel coronavirus. Patients and healthcare staff should also limit their movement across different healthcare premises .

Young Parents understands that the private hospitals are also following the guidelines closely.

To help you decide where to deliver your baby, here’s a roundup of the 10 maternity hospitals’ regular rooms and premium suites in Singapore.

KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital

Private patients can choose to stay in the Class A single bed room (pictured), which comes with a sofa bed, mini fridge, personal safe and daily newspaper delivery.

Mums staying in the Class A and B1 wards can opt for a confinement meal menu with red date or ginger tea.  There are also lactation consultants on hand to provide complimentary care on breastfeeding techniques and personalised parentcraft education by nurses.

Nurses in the wards would also arrange for little heart-warming gestures to make the hospital stay memorable for new mums. For example, they would put together a small celebration for inpatients to celebrate their birthday during their stay.

KKH has the largest facility in the region for neonatal intensive care to handle complex needs of newborns. Should the need arise, there is a multidisciplinary perinatal team on standby around the clock.

The estimated bill size for a Class A1 single-bedded package is around $5,110* (two days, normal delivery). For B1 four-bedded package, the estimated bill size is around $3,763* (two days, normal delivery). KKH is BFHI-accredited.

Take a virtual tour here . To find out more, visit www.kkh.com.sg , call 6394-1268 or e-mail [email protected] .

My Experience of Giving Birth at NUH

The Bossy Flossie family recently grew by one with new recruit little Jammy! My little cherub is now seven weeks old and, mercifully, his delivery is fast becoming a foggy memory. The labour was both a joyful and a traumatic experience. I am so glad I chose to give birth at NUH, as discussed in an earlier post . The nurses were great, the facilities were modern, and the final medical bill did not horrify.

A latecomer

When I hit my 37th week of pregnancy I started receiving regular messages such as, “How are you feeling?” and “Has the baby arrived yet?”. Naturally, I responded with good humour and anticipation. After all, I was super excited. At that point, I could go into labour at any time! But as the days and weeks passed, my feelings curdled into impatience and irritation.

A due date is based on a 40-week pregnancy. However, a healthy baby can be born anytime between 37 and 42 weeks. My own due date came and went, and still, there was no baby. So, my doctor advised me to have an induction.

A painful induction

I was 41 weeks on the day of my induction. I arrived at the National University Hospital (NUH) at 8.30am with a small bag of personal essentials. I’d packed toiletries, a mountain of home-made sultana biscuits, a change of clothes, and an exercise ball with pump.

Shortly after arriving at ward 48, a medical belt was strapped around my waist to measure contractions. According to the machine, I was already contracting although I didn’t feel a thing! The nurse then gave me a prostaglandin vaginal suppository to speed things up. This is one of the many ways you can induce labour and it works by stimulating the uterine contractions. The nurse asked me to return again in the afternoon, leaving me free to roam the hospital grounds.

I spent the next few hours walking around NUH, drinking coffee, and working on an essay for my Master’s degree. I tucked into some nasi lemak for lunch and at 3.00pm I headed to ward 9A to check into my hospital room.

I had a private A-class room at NUH charged at $535.00 per night. The room was clean and spacious, containing a separate bathroom, TV, hospital bed, desk with chair, and a recliner for visitors to sit and sleep. Extra sheets, blankets and pillows were available in the cupboard. Best of all, plenty of natural light and lush views of Kent Ridge brightened the room. I felt super comfortable chilling here while I waited for my labour experience to begin.

The “fun” begins

It wasn’t until 5.00pm that I really started to feel the contractions. From then on, things escalated quickly! I called my husband to hurry on over. He arrived with a bag of baby items including a car seat for the eventual trip home. By 6.00pm I was in agony and my clothes were soaked through with sweat. The contractions were happening every 1 minute and felt like giant iron talons crunching and clamping on my insides. I applied all the techniques learnt during my antenatal classes to work through the pain. I stretched and bounced on my exercise ball, paced the ward, breathed deeply, and took a hot shower. The speed of contractions did not ease up and I quickly went from 1cm to 5cm dilated. By 9.00pm I was in active labour and ready to push the baby out!

Remaining graceful under the circumstances was not easy. I howled all the way to the delivery suite. One of the nurses gave me an injection to temporarily slow the contractions while they prepped me for labour. That’s when the bomb dropped… The anaesthetist gravely informed that due to my previous broken back , the risk of infection with an epidural was too high and that I was going to have to proceed without it. I felt shattered, exhausted, and ready to give up. Was this level of pain, more akin to torture, really normal ? I later learned that contractions are significantly more intense when pregnancy is induced.

The head nurse could see I was flailing. With much enthusiasm and vigour, she persuaded me that pushing the baby out would be a piece of cake. “Stop thinking about the epidural and just get on with it” she implored. The contractions were starting up again at 5 minutes apart. With all the strength I could muster, and a few sucks of laughing gas, I got ready for the grand finale.

Labour is nothing like in the movies. To push properly you must use your abdominal muscles. If you are screaming then you are doing it wrong! During each contraction, I pushed and heaved with all my might while the nurse and my husband supported my legs. In the breaks in between, I rested my eyes and breathed the laughing gas. The gas itself doesn’t really ease the pain so much as provide a distraction, as you place the cup over your mouth to deeply inhale and exhale.

A blogger is born

The doctor pulled little Jammy out at 12.05am. He entered the world full of energy (and hair!) – waving his arms, clenching his fists and screaming his lungs out. We were overjoyed to welcome a healthy, bonny boy.

I remained at NUH for two nights. During this time the nurses taught me how to swaddle, change a nappy, and breastfeed. Jammy slept in the same room as me in his own bassinet. However, for tired mummies, NUH also has a nursery where babies can be cared for while you rest.

While recovering from the trauma of labour, and as I bonded with Jammy, I developed a ravenous appetite for sweets. I gulped down cups and cups of milky milo, courtesy of NUH, and feasted on the homemade biscuits I had packed with me. I decided to give the hospital food a miss.

On the last day of my stay, just before I went home, the nurse on duty assured me that I would be a good mother. She said all I needed to remember was that babies cry for only one of three reasons: hunger, a dirty diaper, or because they are in need of a cuddle.

Throughout my stay, all of the nurses at NUH were wonderful. They attended to my every need in a manner that was attentive, kind and patient. I wrote them a thank you note before departing.

Jammy is now growing well and gaining weight rapidly. It will be no time at all before he is also blogging with his mamma Bossy Flossie !

How much did it cost?

In a previous blog , I shared the typical prenatal costs you can expect at NUH, KKH and Raffles Hospital. Delivery costs are charged separately.

My delivery with induction at NUH cost $6,453.00. This included $679.45 per day for both room and medical treatment. I was charged an additional $993.62 for baby-related costs including use of the baby cot, doctor’s check-up, and vaccination. The total bill was $7446.62.

Altogether, I had a very positive experience during my pregnancy and giving birth at NUH. I am grateful for their care and expertise in helping me deliver a precious boy and future blogger! Now, me and my boy enjoy staying healthy with these pram-friendly walks around Singapore .

Nottingham University Hospitals

We are excited to be able to officially launch the Maternity and Neonatal Redesign programme!  You can read a copy of the media release here: QMC Neonatal Unit takes exciting next step in expansion plans | Latest news | NUH

We are also excited to be able to share with you the 3D flythrough video which shows how our new, expanded Neonatal Unit will look.

Through the Maternity and Neonatal Redesign Programme, we are taking forward plans to expand our neonatal facilities at the Queen’s Medical Centre.  The construction of the new neonatal unit which is scheduled to begin in January 2024 will take around 10 months and we hope to move into the new expanded unit in December 2024.  This will give us 21 more cots, taking the total number to 38, and will create a better working environment for our staff and more space and privacy for families.

Nottingham University Hospitals provides care for premature babies and their families at both the Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital, and we are the main Tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for this part of the East Midlands.  At the moment, pregnant women who should be able to access neonatal care for their babies at Nottingham, and some babies who are born prematurely, have to be transferred to other hospitals in the East Midlands or even further afield because we do not have enough available cots locally.  Thanks to this expansion programme, that situation will be much less likely in the future.

The expanded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Queen’s Medical Centre will include intensive care, high dependency and low dependency cots.  The neonatal service at City Hospital will become what is known as a ‘Local Neonatal Unit’ (LNU), where babies can be supported in intensive care, before being transferred to the Queen’s Medical Centre for longer term care if needed.  The City Hospital Neonatal Unit will reduce down to eight cots so we will have an overall net increase of 13 cots. To enable the expansion of the QMC neonatal unit, the current unit has temporarily moved to within the Nottingham’s Children Hospital Surgical Unit (NCHSU) on B floor in West Block from September 2023.   We undertook building works to ensure that NCHSU had the necessary requirements to allow the neonatal unit to continue to give the same level of medical and surgical neonatal intensive care to the babies of Nottingham and out network hospitals.

The temporary relocation of the QMC neonatal unit has not affected the number of cots we have available for babies within Nottingham or those babies in the East Midlands requiring neonatal intensive care.  In addition, parents will continue to be welcome on the unit at any time.

A timeline of the programme can be seen below:

Opening of a new elite maternity hospital in Moscow (Russia)

Opening of a new elite maternity hospital in Moscow (Russia)

Head of the EMC maternity hospital is the famous Paris obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Claude Debache, who has extensive experience in taking birth and managing pregnancy among many famous people (movie stars, show business stars, etc.). Total professional experience is 25 years. Accepts more than 100 births per year.

The team of obstetrician-gynecologists, neonatologists and pediatricians of the new elite maternity hospital in Moscow worked and trained at the leading medical centers of the world: - Medical Center of the University of California (UCLA), USA. - Clinic Yale New Haven, USA. - Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, California, USA. - Maternity hospital Kaiser Permanente, California, USA. - Hospital Port Royal, Paris, France. - American Hospital, Paris, France.

Opening of a new maternity hospital in Moscow (Russia)

For future mothers and newborns in the maternity hospital there is not only a comfortable stay but everything is thought through to the smallest detail. In the wards there are: multifunctional medical bed, baby cot, changing table, dining area, LCD TV, refrigerator (mini bar), telephone, Wi-Fi. Wards are equipped with air conditioning and a button for a call of staff.

The main advantage is safe childbirth!

Preference is always given to natural childbirth, if there is no threat to the health of the mother and child. Your loved ones can be near at the moment of birth. Modern types of anesthesia are applied: epidural and spinal (with cesarean section) anesthesia, in rare cases - drug anesthesia.

In the clinic there is a department of pathology, where modern methods of preserving pregnancy are used. I would like to particularly note the department of neonatology, equipped with the latest technology. You can safely give birth in Moscow at the EMC hospital, where you will be provided with a European level of service, and the high professionalism of doctors and the latest equipment - the safety of your life and your future child.
