1. Red Bus Tour

The famous red vintage buses that are a familiar sight in the park and also part of its heritage serve as an ideal way to get around and learn more about the locality. The buses have roll-back tops which allow full views of the surrounding scenery.

The guides on the buses are seasoned veterans with much to share. Obviously, the seats are not quite up to modern standards, but maybe this adds to the authenticity. The red buses facilitate 17 people, and the daily tours usually sell out quickly.

The Glacier Park Red Bus Tours are all-round trips and set off from both the east and west sides of the park. Trips from the east side cover features such as Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, Many Glacier Hotel, and Rising Sun Motor Inn inside the park, as well as some of St. Mary’s.

On the west side departure points tour participants can take in the Apgar Visitor Center, the Village Inn at Apgar and Lake McDonald Lodge.

2. 6-Day/5-Night Bike Tour

If you think that possibly the best way to get around any natural, outdoor expanse is by bicycle, then this could be for you. On this 6-day tour, you will get to ride along the cyclist’s dream, the ‘Going-to-the-Sun Road’ and you’ll soon realize why it is considered one of the most scenic roads in America.

It’s not purely saddle-work on this trip though and you’ll also get to do a little rafting along the scenic Flathead River, and indulge in a spot of trekking and a picnic by the shore of Two Medicine Lake .

Then there is a boat ride and hike to Grinnell Lake in the midst of Glacier National Park’s peaks. Along the way, you’ll get to learn something of the history and culture of the Blackfeet Nation from a couple of tribal elders. The trip also includes a few days in the western town of Whitefish , for yet more riding and rafting through the Flathead Valley.

3. Custom Guided Day Hike

If you prefer taking things in at a slower pace and think that going on foot is the best way to experience the park – then this one-day, custom hike is for you! This is a private tour for 1 to 5 provided by local guides and they can help you decide which route will best suit your requirements.

The guide can meet you at your hotel or camp if you are staying in Glacier National Park, and the day hikes usually cover 8 to 12 miles. This is flexible though and can be tailored to your hiking abilities and points of interest.

For instance, if you want to bring children on the hike the guides may put together 2 or 3 smaller hikes over a larger area, and can be easy, moderate, or advanced in difficulty according to your preferences.

4. Half-Day Guided Rafting Trip

This half-day rafting trip can be either a white water adventure or a scenic float, depending on which you prefer. The scenic float trips are available between May and mid-October, while the white water adventures usually occur between May and early September, according to the level of the rivers.

This is a private, guided rafting trip in Glacier that accommodates up to 8 people and allows you to paddle as part of the crew on the raft if you wish, as it winds its way along 9 different rapids.

Unless you would rather sit back and take in the scenery, as it stretches for 8 miles of picturesque viewing, that is. For the rafting experience, the difficulty is rated as easy or moderate, and is considered family-friendly.

The trips last for anything between 2 and 4 hours, according to the level of the river. Private transportation to and from the river is included, as is all necessary safety equipment, and guide services.

5. Half-Day Nature Walk Tour

This is a relatively easy-going, half-day trip in Glacier and is an ideal first introduction to the park for many visitors. You’ll participate in 2 short walks, each about 1 mile in distance, with minimal elevation.

The tour starts at around 9.30 am and culminates at 1.30 pm. Participants are driven into Glacier National Park via the West Glacier entrance, 1 mile from the guide’s office.

You’ll get to learn about outdoor ethics, as well as a bit of forest fire science and river ecology, and maybe even a spot of history of early settlers. Your local guide will lead you on an interpretive tour equipped with all the necessary transportation, snacks, equipment (and bear spray).

You’ll still need to bring a daypack to carry your own water bottle, camera/phone, binoculars, raincoat, fleece, a Glacier National Park Pass – and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Once in Glacier, you will walk about the 1-mile round trip through the glaciated Lake McDonald Valley with its resident beaver and moose. Then another drive covers the short distance to Glacier’s North Fork Valley, where you’ll stop at various scenic viewpoints, such as McGee Meadows and McDonald Creek.

Finally, you arrive at the North Fork of the Flathead River , from which you’ll take another short, easy walk, 1-mile round trip.

6. Fly Fishing – Full Day Trip

This is a day full of fly fishing that is suitable for any level. The trips usually run between June and September, depending on guide availability. You can fish on either the Middle Fork or North Fork of the Flathead River, on waters that are federally protected, and contain Rainbow and Brook trout.

The North and Middle Forks of the Flathead River normally become fishable towards the end of June, and this continues into autumn. The fishing is done from a dory and can accommodate 3 people, including your guide.

The local guides are highly knowledgeable and are happy to show you the ropes if necessary. The all-day trips include a delicious, locally sourced, organic lunch on the river. All equipment is provided unless you want to use your own.

7. Overnight Fishing Trip with Camping

These overnight or 2-3day fly fishing trips are centered on the scenic and remote North Fork of the Flathead River. This Glacier National Park river lies on the western border and contains native Westslope Cutthroat, Rainbow Trout, and Brook trout.

The guides are knowledgeable professionals, with a few handy tips to pass on if you don’t have much experience. This overnight trip includes camping riverside at night, and organic meals prepared from locally sourced ingredients are provided.

This trip is ideal from July onwards until early September, depending on guide availability, and is best suited to no more than 2 people.

8. Four-Day Backpacking Guided Tour

If you fancy indulging in what the guides consider the perfect amount of time for a Glacier Park backpacking trek – then check out this 4-day affair. This is a moderately difficult trek that usually begins on Saturdays between May and September.

The minimum age is suggested as 15 for this trip, and you will need to pay park entrance fees yourself. You can rent equipment if required including sleeping bags and tents.

You’ll see parts of the park on this trek that many visitors are completely unaware of, as you pass through subalpine and alpine meadows among the Glaciers’ towering peaks. The guide will highlight many points of interest, and be on the lookout for wildlife.

You’ll get to camp in the Glacier’s backcountry campgrounds, many of which are close to lakes or streams, in case you fancy a spot of fishing and or swimming.

Mileage covers around 5-12 miles per day, and elevation gain and loss I around 500 to 800 feet, unless hiking over a pass when it could be more than double that. The guides prepare all meals from locally sourced and organic ingredients, and groups of 7 can be accommodated.

9. Nature Walk and Float Experience Combination

This is a split combo tour that is relatively easy and family-friendly. The half-day trip is an ideal introduction to the park, as you can learn about the nature and ecosystem as well as getting involved in a nice and laid-back water experience. So you can get 2 different perspectives in one trip!

The nature section involves 2 short, easy walks in Glacier National Park – both about one mile – and it takes just over 3 hours to complete.

After this relaxing morning walk, you get to enjoy a 2 hour long, scenic float on the Flathead River. A lunch break of about 1.5 hours is included before the float, then it’s on to the river.

10. Raft and Bike Day Tour

This full-day tour is another combination, this time involving a raft and a bicycle. You get to raft Glacier’s border river in the morning, then in the afternoon, you explore on 2 wheels, with both lunch and dinner included.

The river winds through 8 miles of the John F. Stevens Canyon, and the rapids are class II and III, which means a fun white water rafting adventure! It is considered moderate difficulty, but no experience is necessary.

This tour is usually available between May and late June, and occurs between the hours of 10:15 am – 7:30 pm, starting from the operator’s office where you meet the guide. First, you’ll get kitted out with the necessary safety equipment, and helmets and life jackets are mandatory.

Elephant attack leaves American woman dead in Zambia's Kafue National Park

Johannesburg — An elephant attack that left an American woman dead in Zambia was captured in harrowing cellphone video over the weekend. The clip, shot by tourists in Zambia's Kafue National Park, begins inside an open safari vehicle during a game drive.

In the distance, a large bull elephant can be seen coming toward the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle cannot be seen in the video clip, but someone is heard, saying: "Oh my goodness," before a man says, "it's coming fast."

The vehicle stops and then another voice, presumably the game ranger, tries to ward off the elephant verbally as the large pachyderm hooks its tusks onto the vehicle and rolls it several times.

Family members  confirmed that Gail Mattson, a 79-year-old Minnesotan, was killed in the attack. In the post on Facebook, Rona Wells said her mother had died in "a tragic accident while on her dream adventure."

Mattson, a retired loan officer, was 11 days into a month-long vacation overseas, her family told WCCO, describing her as "adventurous" and "loved by everybody."

Wilderness Safaris, which operates the tour in the Zambian park, said in a statement that it was cooperating with national authorities to investigate the incident and it offered condolences to Mattson's family.

Wilderness said the other tourists traveling with Mattson were also Americans, four of whom sustained minor injuries in the attack.

"Our guides are extremely well trained, but sadly the terrain and vegetation was such that the route became blocked," the company said, explaining that the ranger "could not move the vehicle out of harm's way quickly enough."

Mattson was evacuated to a hospital in South Africa after the incident but succumbed to her injuries.

Kafue National Park is Zambia's largest national park at 8,650 square miles. It's a popular tourist destination as it's home to five of sub-Saharan Africa's iconic big animal species, lions, elephants, leopards, rhinoceros and buffalo.

Warren Clinton stands on a muddy riverbank where his jetty and pontoon once stood.

He recounts his recent tribulations while they are still fresh in his mind but is frequently interrupted by the sound of his mobile phone ringing.

Each caller wants to take the riverboat tour of the mighty Barron River in Far North Queensland's rainforest mountain village of Kuranda.

Each time, Mr Clinton disappoints his caller — he does not know when he will be able to get back on the water.

"It's been very mentally draining, that's the most difficult part of it," he said.

Operators still waiting

More than three months have passed since the ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper caused Barron's largest flood in more than a century.

Far North Queensland is heavily reliant on the tourist dollar, with one in five people employed in the industry, according to Tourism Tropical North Queensland.

But some tourism operators, including Warren and Melissa Clinton, are still not back on their feet.

The business owners managed to save their boat from destruction in the flood, but the sheer deluge of water washed away their pontoon and a nearby weir.

"I've blocked out [tours] on our online booking system into May," Ms Clinton said.

"Because it's just taking so long and the weather is against you, getting the riverbank fixed and the weir fixed."

Peak season approaching

Governments have been encouraging tourists to go to far north Queensland ever since tropical cyclone Jasper struck in December, with discounted flights and accommodation packages .

Almost a three-hour drive north of Cairns is Cape Tribulation, a spot world famous for being the juncture of the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.

Businesses there only opened to visitors in March for the first time since December, in time for the Easter weekend.

Café owner Lawrence Mason could not hide his relief at being able to work again.

But he is realistic about the "massive amount of repair work" still to be done on the road into his northern community.

A $10 million grant program to rebuild infrastructure will close mid-April.

Applicants are also waiting to find out whether they will receive a share of money set aside to support those who've lost income.

Tourism Minister Michael Healy said he hoped to advise all 119 applications of the outcome "in coming days".

Wildlife recovering

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive Mark Olsen said it had been a "very stressful time".

"This is typically the launch pad for our main season but many of these businesses are coming in with very little cash flow," he said.

"So, we're hoping that in the next couple of days, we start to see those grant announcements coming through."

The Clintons expect it wil be at least five or six weeks before they can show people the wonders of the Barron again.

The visitors who make it there will see a very different landscape but the wildlife has shown signs of recovery.

"It's sort of helped clean the river, bring it back to its original wild state, I think," Mr Clinton said.

"The wildlife has been here longer than us, so they're used to this river flooding.

"It's amazing every year we go back after a flood, and the same fish are still there and the same crocodiles are still there."

Charging elephant kills an American woman on 'bucket list trip' in Zambia

An American woman who was on what she had called her "last big trip" was killed when a charging elephant flipped over the car she was traveling in at a national park in Zambia .

The “aggressive” creature buffeted the vehicle carrying six tourists and a guide, tour operator Wilderness said in a statement Tuesday. It said the 79-year-old victim died after Saturday's incident on a game drive at the Kafue National Park in western Zambia.

The company did not name the victim but Rona Wells, her daughter, identified her as Gail Mattson in a post on Facebook. She said her mother died in a “tragic accident while on her dream adventure.”

A video circulating on social media apparently showing the incident shows a large elephant running toward a car, which slows down as the animal approaches its left side. The elephant then flips the vehicle over and the passengers can be heard gasping as the car rolls over.

NBC News does not know the condition or identity of the person who filmed the video.

Photos shared online of the car, which is emblazoned with the logo of the tour operator, show it tipped onto its side after the incident, with a deep dent in two of its side doors.

Wilderness, which describes itself as a “leading conservation and hospitality company” operating in eight African countries, including Zambia, did not respond to NBC News when asked to confirm the authenticity of the video and the photos.

But the tour operator’s CEO, Keith Vincent, said in the statement that the company’s “guides are all extremely well trained and experienced.”

"Sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” he added.

Another woman was also injured in the incident and taken to a medical facility in South Africa, the Wilderness statement said, adding that four others were treated for minor injuries.

“It’s extremely rare to see an elephant that irate,” Marlon du Toit, a wildlife photographer and safari guide, told the “TODAY” show Thursday. “Across Africa, there are thousands and thousands of guests on safari on a daily basis with no negative consequences.”

The exact cause of Mattson’s death was unclear, but the company said her body would be repatriated to her family in the United States with the support of local Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Lusaka.

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died,” the statement added.

NBC News has reached out to Mattson's family for further comment.

Kafue National Park is Zambia’s largest and oldest national park, according to its website, and spans an area of more than 8,000 square miles. Vast regions of the park remain unexplored and the website says it is home to a variety of untamed wildlife.

A 'bucket list trip'

Mattson spent her winters in Sun City West, Arizona, playing bridge and cards, but during the rest of the year, she "travels all over the world," her friend Brenda Biggs told NBC News. Biggs and her husband, John Longabauth, became friends with Mattson when they moved to the area 6 ½ years ago.

Longabauth said Mattson spoke to the couple about her upcoming safari trip about two weeks ago, and called it "one of her bucket list trips." He said she was very excited for the adventure.

Before she left, she gave the couple concert tickets for a show that would happen while she was traveling, telling them to enjoy the concert and "I'll see you when I get back," Longabauth recalled of the conversation.

Biggs said Mattson, who was almost 80 years old, told her that the African safari was her "my last big trip." She said Mattson was "super excited because it was like the culmination of all the trips that she had gone on."

An avid traveler, Mattson took to trips to Europe and Asia, Longabauth recalled, noting that she might have been to South America, too.

Biggs called her friend "flamboyant," "friendly" and "fabulous" and said she loved bright colors. Mattson had taken over Biggs’ job as the event planner for their 200-member bridge club, she said.

"Gail was one of the more up people you'd ever want to meet," Longabauth said. "She was always up. She was always optimistic. She was always seeing the good side of everybody."

UM Research Discovers New Way to Generate Human Cartilage

MISSOULA – University of Montana researchers and their partners have found a new method to generate human cartilage of the head and neck.

Mark Grimes, a biology professor in UM’s Division of Biological Sciences , said they have induced stem cells to become the cell type that normally makes up human craniofacial cartilage. Stem cells can replicate themselves and also develop into different types of cells.

“The cells that normally give rise to this type of cartilage are called neural crest cells,” Grimes said. “We found a novel method for generating craniofacial organoids from neural crest cells.”

Organoids are a simplified, miniature version of an organ that mimic the architecture and gene expression of the organ. “Organoids are a good model for certain human tissues that we can study in ways that are not possible using tissue from human beings,” he said.

Grimes said there is a critical unmet need for new methods to regenerate human cartilage for the 230,000 children born annually in the U.S. with craniofacial defects. Growing cartilage in the laboratory also could lead to effective treatments to repair craniofacial cartilage damage due to injuries.

The researchers studied gene expression data at the RNA and protein level to reveal how cartilage cells arise from stem cells. They revealed that stem cells communicate in the early stages to become elastic cartilage, which makes up human ears.

To accomplish this, the team used extensive analysis of biological markers and machine-learning pattern-recognition techniques to understand the cell signaling pathways involved when cells differentiate into cartilage.        

It is difficult to reconstruct natural features such as a person’s ears, nose or larynx with current plastic surgery techniques, and transplanted tissue is often rejected without immunosuppressants.

“To use patient-derived stem cells to generate craniofacial cartilage in the laboratory, you need to understand the human-specific differentiation mechanisms,” Grimes said. “Our aim is to develop a protocol for craniofacial cartilage generation for transplantation using human stem cells.”

The research was published in the journal iScience . Besides Grimes, contributing UM authors include Lauren Foltz, Nagashree Avabhrath and Jean-Marc Lanchy. Millions of people are traveling to see the total eclipse. Hotels, motels, and skydiving operators are making bank on it.

• Millions of tourists are expected to boost economies in Texas and New York during the eclipse.
• Hotels, an eyeglasses manufacturer, and even skydiving companies are preparing for increased business.
• One study predicted that the eclipse could benefit the US economy with nearly $1.6 billion.

As millions of Americans get ready to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday — an event NASA has described as rare and "spectacular" — the phenomenon stands to lift local economies.

Various industries are poised to benefit from the millions of tourists flocking to cities in Texas, Ohio, and New York , which are on the eclipse's "path of totality" and offer the best views of the ring around the sun.

According to NASA, this year's eclipse is set to last three to four minutes, longer than the last solar eclipse , in 2017. People who miss this one will not be able to see another in the contiguous US until 2044 or 2045, the agency said.

Up to 3.7 million people are set to travel to the path of the eclipse, joining the 31 million people already living along the stretch, according to predictions by the eclipse-tracking website Great American Eclipse .

Visitors are expected to spend big: They'll shell out up to $1.6 billion on lodging, activities, food, and gas, the Texas economic consultancy Perryman Group estimated .

Here are some of the industries seeing big boosts from Monday's eclipse.

Hotels and Airbnbs book out

The budget hotel chain Super 8 has over 300 locations within the path of totality, per The New York Times. About 100 of these hotels are sold out for Sunday or Monday, according to the chain's website.

One two-star Super 8 branch in Grayville, Illinois, is advertising rooms for between $765 and $950 from Sunday through Tuesday. On most days, the rooms typically cost $80, the Super 8 website shows.

Higher-end hotels are seeing similar spikes. A JW Marriott in Dallas listed a standard room for $1,039 for Sunday night. It typically costs between $355 and $482, the website said.

Visitors are flocking to Airbnbs, too. As of March 25, occupancy rates for April 7 soared to 88% across 110,000 active listings on the path of totality, according to the vacation-rental-data company AirDNA.

The biggest glasses manufacturer has sold out

People can permanently damage their eyesight by looking straight into the sun during an eclipse, so NASA recommends specific solar-filtering glasses .

The eye-protection guidelines translated into huge sales for some glasses manufacturers.

Tennessee's American Paper Optics, the country's largest producer of protective eclipse eyeglasses, has seen a big jump in sales compared with the total eclipse in 2017.

The company started taking eclipse orders two years in advance, John Jerit, the company's founder, told NPR on Friday. The glasses sold for $1.50 to $2 apiece.

"We've shipped already about 70 million glasses, and I suspect I'm going to approach right at 75 million by the time next week comes," Jerit said.

American Paper Optics sold out of glasses this year after producing about 30 million more glasses than it did for the total solar eclipse in 2017, according to a sales figure on the company's site .

Eclipse skydiving attracts thrill seekers

Some adrenaline junkies seeking a novel vantage point are planning to jump during totality to enjoy the darkness from the sky.

A group of 30 skydivers plans to jump in northern New York on Monday, Fox News reported . Tickets for the dive, hosted by the local company Skydive the Falls, sold out in seven minutes after they went live in January.

"We're going to jump one minute prior to totality, so we can enjoy totality in full under our parachutes," Jason Berger, a co-owner of Skydive the Falls, told Fox News.

A similar event in Dallas sold out of its $250 eclipse skydive tickets, too.

For sun observers on the ground, restaurants are making the most of the celestial phenomenon with eclipse menus and specials. Establishments like Smoothie King, Applebee's, and Sonic are offering special eclipse-themed smoothies and margaritas, as well as "blackout" drinks to mark the occasion.
