History of the Mandovi River

The Mandovi River has played a vital role in the history and culture of Goa. The name Mandovi comes from the Sanskrit word ‘ mandaha ’, which means ‘ calming ’ or ‘ soothing ’. The river is associated with several legends and myths, such as the one that says that the river was created by the sage Agastya, who drank the entire ocean and released it as the Mandovi River.

The Mandovi River was the main route for trade and commerce between Goa and other parts of India and the world. It was also the site of many battles and invasions, such as the Portuguese conquest of Goa in 1510 , the Maratha invasion in 1739, and the Indian annexation of Goa in 1961. The river also witnessed the rise and fall of several kingdoms and dynasties, such as the Kadambas, the Vijayanagaras, the Bahmanis, the Adil Shahis, and the Portuguese.

The Mandovi River is dotted with many historical and cultural landmarks, such as the Old Goa, the capital of Portuguese Goa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site ; the Reis Magos Fort, the oldest fort in Goa and a cultural center; the Panjim Church, the largest church in Goa and a fine example of Baroque architecture; and the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Mandovi River Cruise | The Ultimate Guide

Best Time to Go on a Mandovi River Cruise

While Goa is a year-round destination, the best time for a Mandovi River Cruise depends on your preferences and the type of experience you desire:

1. November to February

This is the peak tourist season in Goa, with pleasant weather and low humidity. It’s an ideal time for sunset and dinner cruises as you can comfortably enjoy the outdoor decks and the beautiful sunsets.

2. March to May

These months are considered the shoulder season in Goa. While it can get hot and humid, this is a good time for budget travelers, and you can still enjoy the cruise experiences.

3. June to October

The monsoon season in Goa is a unique time to experience the Mandovi River. The lush greenery is at its peak, and the river is brimming. Some cruises may not operate during heavy rain, so it’s essential to check in advance.

Booking Your Mandovi River Cruise

Booking a Mandovi River Cruise is relatively straightforward, and you can choose from various operators and packages. Here are some tips to consider when booking your cruise:

1. Plan in Advance

During the peak tourist season, it’s advisable to book your cruise in advance, especially if you have specific dates and times in mind. Popular cruises can fill up quickly.

2. Compare Packages

Different operators offer various packages with varying inclusions. Be sure to compare packages and choose one that suits your preferences and budget. Consider the type of cruise, duration, and inclusions like dinner, drinks, and entertainment.

3. Read Reviews

Before making a reservation, it’s a good idea to read reviews from other travelers to get an idea of the quality of service provided by the operator. Online travel forums and review websites can be helpful in this regard.

4. Check the Itinerary

Make sure you understand the itinerary, including the departure and arrival times, duration of the cruise, and any planned stops or activities. This will help you manage your time and expectations.

Essential Tips for Your Mandovi River Cruise

To make the most of your Mandovi River Cruise experience, consider the following tips:

1. Dress Comfortably

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as you’ll be on your feet during most of the cruise. For sunset cruises, a light jacket or shawl can be handy, as it can get cooler on the water.

2. Stay Hydrated

Goa’s climate can be quite warm, so it’s important to stay hydrated. Most cruises offer a range of beverages, including cocktails, but don’t forget to drink water to stay refreshed.

3. Protect Yourself from the Sun

Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are essential to protect yourself from the sun’s rays, especially during daytime cruises.

4. Respect Local Customs

While Goa is known for its liberal and relaxed atmosphere, it’s essential to respect local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting temples or religious sites, and be mindful of local sensitivities.

5. Be Eco-Conscious

The Mandovi River and its surroundings are delicate ecosystems. Avoid littering and dispose of waste responsibly. Wildlife and the environment should be preserved for future generations.

Safety Considerations

Safety is a paramount concern on any cruise. Be sure to adhere to the following safety guidelines during your Mandovi River Cruise:

1. Follow Instructions

Pay close attention to the crew’s instructions and safety briefings. They are there to ensure your well-being throughout the cruise.

2. Stay Inside the Railing

When on the deck, stay within the designated areas and behind safety railings. This is especially important during rough waters.

3. Wear Life Jackets

In the unlikely event of an emergency, life jackets are provided on board. Ensure that you and your fellow passengers are wearing them correctly.

4. Respect Weight Limits

Follow weight limits for any water sports or activities that may be included in your cruise package.

5. Drink Responsibly

If you choose a cruise with alcohol service, drink responsibly. Excessive drinking can lead to accidents and jeopardize your safety.

Mandovi River

A visit to Goa’s capital city, Panjim is a must if you are on a state tour. Not only is the city aesthetically located along the bank of River Mandovi, but it is also scenically highly appealing at night due to the floating casinos and all the glitz this place has on offer. Not to forget the new bridge named Atal Setu ,  which stares at the city from a 70m height, often gives a feeling that one is actually watching Mumbai’s Marine Drive with all the glitter of night on display ala a Queen’s Necklace.

With the threat caused by the COVID19 pandemic still looming over the State and the government grappling with this crisis, things have opened up for the public and tourists at large as Unlock 4.0 unfolds with the new domestic season gets underway. But with the monsoon not over yet a visit to Panjim can still offer a lot. In a nutshell, Goa is a perfect getaway destination from the city hustle and bustle and a ride on the river Mandovi gives you the best value for money. An hour’s ride is a worthwhile experience for family and kids.

Wildlife of Mandovi River

The city streets are dotted with classy restaurants that will serve you various local delicacies and fish while the market has a lot to offer shopping-wise. As and when things open-up fully, the river cruise over Mandovi to view an enchanting sunset and a boat ride towards the Divar Island to witness the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary or to spot the Mugger crocodiles on the banks, could be a great experience.

Crocodile Dundee is a new craze gripping tourists. It’s a novel introduction as far as the backwater boat cruise is concerned. This trip involves a quiet sail in the serene backwater of Goa covering Mandovi River and the adjoining Cumbharjua canal where spotting Crocodile is something adventurous in the backdrop of thick mangrove forest. The trip offers lunch at a village spice farm by a local operator and is optional.

Tourism Packages

Even the state’s tourism department has chalked out tourist-friendly packages to boost river tourism on Mandovi which entails dinner cruise, sunset cruise, boat rides, and various other introductions. The magnificent and historical Adil Shah Palace or the Fort Aguada and its towering lighthouse will definitely greet you once you are on your way on river cruise .

Mandovi River Cruise in Goa: Experience Goa Beyond Beaches

I am back from a short holiday in Goa. This time I broke the Goa tourists’ rule of visiting beaches. I didn’t visit a single beach in the 7 days I spent there. Deliberately I did different things. There are several other things to do in Goa beyond beaches.

It was a cruise through Mandovi River Road in Goa! The river is 81km in length; 35km of which flows in Karnataka, 1km in Maharashtra and 45km in Goa.

Mandovi River Cruise: Experience Goa Beyond Beaches

For a part of my holiday I stayed in a students’ hostel and then for a couple of days in a reputed home-stay and then another day in a guest house. Days spent in the students’ hostel are most dear to me. Of course that had to be, I was with my elder daughter there.

The fun part was I had food in their canteen. I queued up behind other students and ate the same food they were eating. That reminded of my student days, made me feel a lot younger! The home-stay part was result of my prize winning entry in one of the contests held by Indiblogger some time back. Read the entry: Bringing Nature to Our Balcony .

Mandovi River Road in Goa

To start with, I didn’t do the sea but I did the river. I cruised along the river road in Goa. Did you know Goa is crisscrossed by 9 rivers?   Yes, 9 of them flowing from Western Ghats to the Arabian Sea. These rivers are a huge support for Goan life.

We did three hours of speed boat ride. We cruised along the Mandovi River almost till Aguada Fort when we spotted dolphins! And how they thrilled us!

The meeting of Mandovi River and the Arabian Sea at Miramar and sighting the dolphins diving around was a spectacular sight! Humpback dolphins and the finless Porpoises can be seen in plenty along the Sinquerim Bay, as this bay with shallow waters is an ideal habitat for them.

Reading about these dolphins forever in blogs and news articles had become such a sour affair: all those feelings got wiped off when we saw so many of them bobbing up down the river surface.

Noteworthy historical sights that we spotted along the river are: Aguada Fort, Reis Magos Church and Fort . Casinos too dotted the river line, they must be a sight to behold at night when they are fully lit up.

Mandovi river cruise Goa

Up the Mandovi River

After spotting the dolphins we moved on along the river road in Goa. A little up stream, Mandovi River splits to Mapusa River , we moved on along Mapusa River .

We crossed Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary , I looked at it longingly, some day I should visit this place I jotted in the pages of my mind. ( How to reach the sanctuary: Take a bus or car ride from Panaji, capital of Goa, to the Ribandar ferry wharf. From there, take a ferry across the Mandovi River to the island of Chorao. The sanctuary is within walking distance from the ferry wharf. )

Soon I spotted a flying fish scurrying across the river. It was too fast for me. That made me alert to capture any other interesting sight that would come my way. And I was not disappointed. A little further we spotted a water snake cross our path. This time I was ready with my camera and I could get a few decent snaps.

It’s always great to go against the norm and find new magic in an old place. Admittedly, I visit my fair share of tourist attractions…but I also love to find hidden gems as well and the 3 hr speed boat ride sounds like a great time.

' data-srcset=

This is a refreshingly different perspective of Goa. Yes indeed, there is so much to Goa, beyond its beaches. One needs to explore the interior villages of Goa for an immersive experience in the regions culture and heritage.

' data-srcset=

Awesome photos! That snake looks scary though. I love seeing off the beaten path places.

' data-srcset=

I have great respect for travellers who find new ways to travel a frequently travelled destination in a new way altogether! You have just earned a new fan Indrani!

GOA, here I come!

' data-srcset=

This must have been a delightful experence. Criuse through a small, calm river should be soothn. And great shots of the snake and dolphins. Are these river dolphins?

' data-srcset=

Looks like you had an authentic journey in Goa! I had no idea it is crossed by 9 rivers! Would love to see the dolphins as well but honestly I would check the beaches for sure! Staying at the student hostel/dorm probably can give you a more local and homely feeling.

' data-srcset=

I usually run away from beaches when I travel, so I don’t blaim you. This trip up the river looks great actually, very nice views and it looks like you’re in the middle of nature!

' data-srcset=

Wow nice getaway! Never been to Goa but sounds really great to be there with your post and wait, Is that a snake? Love your shots by the way 🙂

' data-srcset=

Wow.. This blog is just what I want to do in my next trip to Goa. Stay away from beaches and romance with the architecture and culture of the villages. Concept of River road travel is so interesting. I am copying your itinerary in my next trip. Thanks for the lovely article.

' data-srcset=

Ah, Goa. I haven’t been there and didn’t know one can see dolphins around! I love dolphins and often opt of dolphin and whale watching tour in the Philippines just to get glimpses of these beautiful creatures. But what is that? A sea snake? Something I wouldn’t want to see while swimming though.

' data-srcset=

I’ve never been to Goa before. I was in India last February, but I never made it to Goa. My friends did and they seem to like it very much. I’m glad that I get to see a part of Goa from your post, seems like you had a great time!

' data-srcset=

Really lovely post through the rivers of Goa. Something that I hadn’t explored before and plan to do so soon.

' data-srcset=

9 rivers crossing? Very cool!! Look at that snake too! Kinda creeped out by that lol Thank you for sharing!

' data-srcset=

Great photos! 9 rivers wow! Can you swim in them? Or is it only the snakes that enjoy it. I saw one in Prague while rafting, after swimming in the river, and I was quite freaked out to be honest 😀

' data-srcset=

I love snakes, I like the one swimming carelessly in the water! Since I’m curious, I wanted to see a map of Goa to spot all the different rivers, and I realized that Goa is not an island! I mean, I always heard about Goa beaches that in the end I was kind of sure it was an island, not a western region of India! Shame on me 😀

' data-srcset=

I had no idea that Goa was criss-crossed by so many rivers although that would certainly account for the abundance of life there. I’ve heard however, that there is a large amount of population there. Does this affect the dolphins? They are a creature that I would imagine are very susceptible to changes in their environment

' data-srcset=

I have been to India but not Goa. Goa is on the list of places to visit, thank you for the information. I love the snake snap, you must have been so quick. I love India.

' data-srcset=

Great photos; Goa looks like an amazing place, even without visiting the beaches! I’m not too sure about the huge snake in the water but loved the shot of the dolphins 🙂 Such beautiful creatures!

' data-srcset=

This post made me really happy! When I visited Goa last year, I realized there’s so much to see in Goa apart from the beaches which most of the travelers miss. And, I loved the rivers in Goa, specifically Baga and Salcete. Great info there!

' data-srcset=

Wow.Goa has so many rivers. That’s really awesome.Lovely clicks. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers, Sriram & Krithiga

' data-srcset=

Beautifully captured Indrani. So envious of you right now for doing the unexplored in Goa. Would love to know more…

' data-srcset=

That’s awesome..been to Aguada Fort and just love the places..also we were trying to get a peek of Dolphins. Didn’t know about the rivers surrounding Goa and yeah, the Casino on boat, I remember it:)

' data-srcset=

7 days in Goa without visiting a single beach – hats off to you for bending the rules of Goa travel! 🙂 The pictures look so serene, and I love that glimpse of dolphins in the Mandovi river. I had no clue Goa was crisscrossed by as many as 9 rivers! So far I'd only heard of Mandovi and, to a less extent, Chapora. Thanks for this great post. 🙂

Lovely captures and good read Indrani. I have been to Goa and it is indeed a Lovely place…but my spaces were concerned with art 🙂

Nice post & vivid description about holidays in Goa. Beautiful pictures, especially the one with snake running under water… 🙂

I have just returned from Goa on Sunday. Very true the sight of Dolphins from Aguada fort is worth. I spent some time in the casino too not pride 2 but pride 1. Its good. Goa is good if you just one to stay lazy and enjoy.

Good Snaps.

off the beaten path…..the hidden treasures that we find…..good post…..good choices made….

Lovely captures… 9 rivers sound interesting because I thought Goa was so much about beaches.. I too have seen some lovely dolphins in my Oman trip.

Clicks are lovely as always. Enjoyed reading the post. Could relate to the experience of queuing up with students for food in canteen as I had a similar experience at Manipal. 🙂

I've been on the Mandovi river and yes it's beautiful! Goa is very close to my heart and I just went there last December at the exposition of the remains of Saint Francis Xavier. Do check out my posts on Goa and tell me what you think (if you can).

Nice Narration of the visit to Goa with the beautiful pictures of the Place! A visit to Goa is truly an experience of its own kind compared to the other tourist Places…. And the train travel between Londa and Mud Gaon is really seen as worth of the visit as it passes thru Dudh Sagar Water Falls!

Nice Pics. Yes who wouldn't love to watch the dolphins.

Nice to know that you skipped the beaches and explored the other side of Goa. It is truly a magical land – it has so much to offer.

Nice information and pictures – never knew about the rivers 🙂 And the snake is a variety addition 😀

Loved the way you told the story. Very interesting! Photographs are superb!

Nice place and good shots. Must have been really good to see Dolphins.

Very nice clicks

all pics are lovely but the one with snake is really scary!

Taking a boat to explore sounds fun and exciting… glad you enjoyed being unusual with Goa and also way relaxed! Great photos spotted with dolphins and snake

Glad to hear you avoided the beaches. There is much more Goa than its popular beaches.

Oh wow, did not know about the rivers in Goa, it's all about the sea and the beaches. Goa is still in my bucket list.

I really love the snake shot!

Hello Indrani! The river boat tour looks like a lot of fun! And I love to see the dolphins! Wonderful series of photos..Sounds like you enjoyed your time with your daughter too. Have a happy Friday and weekend ahead!

Goa and no beaches is an achievement 😉

Nice photos. ~ Have a nice weekend ~

What a beautiful trip, very nice pictures!

These are all great shots and I love the last one.

Wonderful photos. I love the last pic too with feet up enjoying the relaxing boat ride. Happy weekend. x

I knew you would be an expert in Goa in time to come and explore the unexplored. I love Goa too. Wish one can spend a couple of month each year there.

I have not yet been to Goa, but will go and also visit the beaches! Nine rivers; that's impressive.

So many rivers in one place! It sounds a lot like Heaven there, 🙂

Goa and no beaches! Breaking the league. Staying in hostel and having food them sounds sweet. I miss my hostel days. …and must say that you have caught some awesome frames. 😀

What a wonderful getaway!

sounds and looks like a lovely getaway! especially sharing time with your daughter!

Love your pics for the day!! Wonderful to see the dolphins in the water and the river boat — that one reminds me of the river boats in New Orleans!! Hope your week is going well, Indrani!!

Nice photos.

Mandovi River Cruise Timings

While most tourists know Goa as a place of seawater, this state also has large amounts of freshwater flowing through it. Of all the rivers that flow in the smallest state of India, Mandovi holds a special importance.

Mandovi river is not just popular as a source of freshwater fish but also as a venue for leisure activities such as cruises.

About the Mandovi River

Also known as Mahadayi River, Mandovi River originates from the Western Ghats and meets the Arabian Sea. Spanning a total length of 81 km, this river has a basin area of 3,612 square kilometers. The average discharge of the Mandovi River is 200 metric cubes per second.

Types of Cruises available on Mandovi River

There are different types of cruises that you can enjoy along the River Mandovi which is also called Mhadei. Each type has its own timing, charm and a unique aspect of the river that it allows you to relish. Take a look at some of the cruising options:

Dolphin Cruise

Typically priced around INR 300 per person, a dolphin cruise on the Mandovi River lasts for 1 hour. The main aim of this cruise is to sight dolphins. Different species of these cetaceans can be spotted in Goa.

Thanks to the friendly nature of dolphins, many will even come near your cruise boat to offer you a closer look at them. You will mostly find dolphins swimming together in pods and leaping rhythmically in and out of the water.

Along with dolphin spotting, the cruise will give you a glimpse of Portuguese architecture as you sail along the coastline and get a view of the Light House, Fort Aguada and Millionaire’s Palace from the water.

Sunset Cruise

Lasting from 60 to 90 minutes, sunset cruises in the Mandovi River are one of the most romantic things to do if you are traveling as a couple. The cost of a sunset cruise starts from INR 500 per person for the 1-hour cruise and increases as per the duration.

Apart from the chance to catch the sunset from the water, you can also get a glimpse of some of the sightseeing places in Goa that are located along the shoreline. Most cruise boats are equipped with a dance floor so you can dance to the beats of the live DJ and groove to the music.

Some of these cruises also have a cultural performance onboard. Often, Goan folk dances are performed by trained artists. Some of the cruise boats have two decks and separate areas for air-conditioned seating. You may even have access to a bar counter to order your own drinks from.

Many cruise providers along the Mandovi River offer discounted rates for children. Some also let children under the age of 5 experience the cruise for free. This cruise usually starts at around 5:30 PM or 6 PM.

Dinner Cruise

Dinner cruises on the Mandovi River generally last for 2 to 3 hours. Beginning at 8:30 PM or 9 PM, some of these cruises go on until midnight or even past it. The package usually includes a selection of welcome drinks, starters, the main dinner and some dessert.

Apart from the food, the dinner cruise has activities such as karaoke where you can sing live along with the background music and even have lyrics that you can follow. Music and live DJ are a given as the mood they aim to set is that of a party.

Bollywood songs are played along with live performances of Goan folk dancers on some cruises. A well-managed dinner cruise also engages its passengers through games and other interactive activities.

Dinner cruises are a great way to see Goa at night and admire its skyline which is lit in fancy colors. Some of the cruise boats too are decorated in neon lights so as to glow in the dark and offer good pictures in the dark backdrop of the night. Dinner cruises are priced upwards of INR 1,000 for children and INR 1,500 for adults.

Casino Cruise

The Mandovi River is so long that a number of bridges go over it. This river connects a number of islands that form the entire state of Goa. The route of the river also passes by some of the famous casinos such as Deltin Royale and Casino Carnival.

You can sign up for a river cruise that specifically follows the casino route and get a glimpse of the dazzling exteriors of these gambling houses. There are 10 on-shore casinos and 6 off-shore ones in Goa.

Majestic Pride is one such offshore casino that sits right on the Mandovi River. Located inside a vessel that does not sail, a visit to this gambling house will give you all the thrill of the Goan nightlife without the experience of an actual cruise.

The cruise boats that essentially act as casinos offer jackpot slot machines and games such as roulette, baccarat, blackjack, andarbahar, mini flush and paplu. Food and drinks are available all night on these casino cruise boats along the Mandovi River.

Yacht Cruise

In Goa, you can cruise not only on regular boats and houseboats but also on luxury yachts. Yachting on the Mandovi River is a unique experience as you can charter the yacht all to yourself and indulge in some water activities such as island hopping, swimming, kayaking and even snorkeling and diving.

Prices for yacht cruises usually begin at INR 2,000 per person or INR 20,000 for the entire vessel. This price sometimes also includes wine and some food onboard. If you would rather charter a catamaran, you will be paying upwards of INR 1,000 per person.

From Mumbai to Goa: a journey aboard The Mandovi Express

After departing Mumbai, providing glimpses of India’s largest city in all its guts and glory, the  12-hour Mandovi Express heads southwards down the coast towards the tropical idyll of Goa.

With the same level of joy I felt on my wedding day, I’m eyeing the saucer of chicken curry coming out of the kitchen and rolling up my sleeves in anticipation. It’s chicken masala fry, to be precise, a leg portion pooling in rich gravy flecked with coriander with strips of raw onion, lemon quarters and green chillies on the side. I’ve been coming to Olympia Coffee House in Mumbai’s Colaba neighbourhood for more than 10 years, although the beloved spot has been around since 1918. In truth, jet-lagged and in search of breakfast, I came for its kheema pav curry, but it had sold out by 10am. But my dish is an excellent consolation. Wiping up the remnants with buttery roti, my fingers turmeric-tinged and stinging, I pay a bill of barely £2 and stroll out onto Colaba Causeway, making a beeline towards a Fabindia clothing shop to buy dhoti trousers for the train ride to Goa.

Bombay to some, Mumbai to others, the seven jungled islands that make up the city are like a thousand cities condensed into one. Banyan trees spread their roots around art deco buildings and moss grows on multiplex walls, while the long-established and the rootless live side-by-side in a state of yin and yang. Home to live jazz, literary festivals, dive bars, beach clubs, fashion houses, fishing villages, dhobi wallahs (laundry men), dabba wallahs (lunch box deliverers), mansions and slums, the curious and cosmopolitan city took hold when I first felt its heat on my skin — and I’ve never found cause to let go. My time in Bombay is fleeting so I prioritise my favourite activities: after my curry and clothes shopping I go for garlic pepper crab at Trishna; wander through Kala Ghoda’s art galleries; and enjoy a chicken roll at Bademiya, behind the famous Taj Mahal Palace hotel. Then, it’s a good night’s sleep at the Abode hotel, one of the few boutique-style hotels in Colaba, before catching the 7am Mandovi Express to Goa, a state famed for its golden coastline.

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, a showstopping example of Victorian gothic revival architecture and a symbol of the city.

Perhaps it’s strange to come to a city for the sole purpose of leaving it, but taking the Mandovi Express down the coast is an adventure in itself; the embodiment of Indian Railways with its food, characters, views and history. Stretching 460 miles from Mumbai to Mangalore, the Konkan Railway is the one segment of India’s railway built entirely by Indian engineers, who conceived and completed a plan that had terrified the British. Fording 1,500 rivers, boring through mountains, enduring landslides and fending off snakes and tigers, they constructed 2,000 bridges and 92 tunnels to create a line that navigates the most spectacular landscape. Above all, it has the most praised pantry car on the network, with chicken lollipops, crisp pakoras and chicken biryani that draws rail fans from Kolkata to Nellore.

Departing from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus — more gothic cathedral than railway hub — the train is already at the platform when I scan the carriage numbers and board in sleeper class. A burst of rain throws up the scent of earth and florals as I watch commuters sail into the station on local trains, jumping from the open sides with satchels slung over their shoulders. With a shunt, our train glides out of the station and a smile spreads across my face as I settle in for the 12-hour ride.

There’s no hiding the truth from passengers on an Indian train, and this one carves through Mumbai, laying bare its guts and glories. Aerials and air-con units hang off high-rise flats, black and stained as though fire-damaged, and I spot more Indian flags than I’ve seen before, a sign of the country’s rising nationalism. Buffalo with centre partings lounge in the shade of rain trees, and patches of pink lotus appear in the mud. It seems cleaner than on my last visit.

And then the city’s gone, thrown off like shackles as the train canters through the countryside, wind whipping through the wide-open doors. I sit back and feel a sense of freedom as we tear through tiny stations, their red and blue roundels flashing by in a blur. There’s already a traffic jam of vendors in the aisles, skinning cucumbers seasoned with chilli salt and carrying trays of veg cutlet sandwiches and vada pav, the quintessential Bombay snack: fried potato patties mashed with garlic, chilli and coriander, laid in a bap and sprinkled with powdered spice. Less than £1 for two, they’re a perfect mid-morning snack. Biting through the heat, spice and crispness, I hear singing and clapping from down the aisle, accompanied by the thud and jingle of a tambourine. On cue, three hijras appear; members of India’s third gender, who earn a bit of money by performing, often on trains. I look over their joyful saris and jewellery, and one winks and waves while reaching deftly to pluck a note from a fellow passenger, adding to the collection.

A small man with orange-hennaed hair sits down opposite me, keen to chat. Subash Desai lives just outside Mumbai where he works in HR. He’s been taking the train for more than 10 years to Pernem in North Goa, where his wife has a home. I ask him why he doesn’t take the faster Jan Shatabdi train and he waves his hand. “I’ve taken it a couple of times, but it’s too early in the morning,” he says. “It leaves at 5.45am, reaches Goa about 3pm, and it comes back to Bombay in the night. Some find it good, but it’s very costly.” He points above to where a fellow passenger is asleep. “No berths, can’t sleep, must sit upright.”

At that moment our lunch arrives in foil containers and I peel off the lid and inhale the steam from fresh chicken biryani. “Also, the food is very good [on this train],” he laughs, pulling his feet into a cross-legged position and spooning up his rice. He points out of the window to where the scenery has transformed into forested mountains, lime-green meadows and rivers swinging wide. “This is the Vashishti River,” he says. “It’s one of the largest in this region, originating in the Western Ghats… many crocodiles, too.” In all the times I’ve travelled this route it’s never occurred to me that the inviting waters could be death traps where mugger crocodiles float like logs.

A vendor slices fresh cucumbers into strips, serving them to passengers with a sprinkling of chilli salt.

After the train passes through the village of Anjani, I pause in the doorway, watching hundreds of dragonflies hovering by the tracks. In the foreground, palm fronds are within touching distance, while waterlogged paddies gleam in the light and thick tropical forest is all around. Waterfalls crash down cuttings, sending spray into the doorways, and the rivers widen at every bend as jungles slide off the banks and into the flow. In the distance the mountains look blue, their heads grazing the clouds, and I feel a sense of awe at what was endured to build this line.

For a number of reasons, we’re delayed by three hours — not unusual on this route, where freight has priority and the occasional landslide or flood warning slows the journey. There’s a distinctly indifferent attitude towards the delay, with passengers shrugging, dealing out cards and handing out packets of masala nuts and fruit. I start thinking about the next few days in Goa, where I’ve booked a walking tour through Fontainhas in the city of Panjim, Goa’s pastel-coloured Latin Quarter. It was here that I first discovered Confeitaria 31 De Janeiro, a pocket-sized bakery owned by a woman named Gletta Mascarenhas. Fitting fewer than five people at the counter, with a wood-fired oven flaming in the back, it produces sweet and spicy Goan pork rolls, prawn empadinhas and crisp mushroom puffs, each one a mouthful of magic. Meanwhile, having never been to the old, inland village of Chandor, I’ve also arranged to see its Portuguese churches and heritage homes with a chatty chap named Pankaj, who’s been WhatsApping all afternoon, eager to show me around. And no doubt I’ll spend an hour or two feeling the golden sand between my toes in the coastal village of Majorda.

On the eventual approach to Goa, churches begin to pop up from within the jungle and the sound of crickets rings out through the darkness that fell so fast I didn’t notice. The signs of arrival grow stronger as bags are zipped, shoes located and phones unplugged from the walls. Outside, backlit palms wave in the sea breeze and I watch families in blush-pink houses winding down for the night in the cosy glow of hurricane lamps. At Madgaon, my stop, I descend the steps and step back to watch the train leave. Tomorrow, in Mangalore, the final destination, vendors will board, tea will be drunk, cards will be dealt, music played, politics discussed and a new world will revolve between these walls. But for now, the Mandovi Express creaks and carries on its journey down the coast.

Panaji: Your Gateway To Cultural Delights And Scenic Wonders In Goa

What makes panaji city famous.

Panaji is the capital city of Goa, and it's built in a stunning position on the banks of the Mandovi River. You'll find yourself mesmerized by the comings and goings of boats from all around the world, and they'll make for an unforgettable view while you're there.

There are many things to love about Panaji - from its rich culture and history to its beautiful scenery - and we're confident that you'll have a great time exploring it all. The city streets are always bustling with life, colonial architecture gives it a unique look, and its waterfronts are unparalleled anywhere else in the world.

One trip here will leave you feeling relaxed, at peace, and ready to move onto your next destination. In this article we'll take a deep dive into what makes Panaji famous: including its rich heritage, cultural attractions, serene ambiance, as well as provide information about some great places to eat while you're here.

1.Colonial Heritage: A Step into the Past

The city's streets are so colorful that walking along them can feel like you've stepped inside of a painting. Everywhere you look you'll see evidence of Portugal's stamp on Goa too; which will keep your eyes entertained for hours on end. If pastel-colored houses accessible only by winding walkways pique your interest then head over to Fontainhas -- which is what Panaji's historic quarter was called when it was under Portuguese rule. Even without knowing anything about them, you won't be able to help but admire buildings with intricate balconies such as these or ornate doors like these either.

2.Churches and Temples: Holy Havens

Although there are many more religious landmarks per kilometer in Panaji than most places around the world - just seeing one may be enough for you to sense how much faith runs through everyone's veins here too. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church is one of the oldest catholic churches in all of Goa, and it's a sight that you'll be glad to have seen. It's bright white exterior shines even brighter when the sun is out too!
