Mossman Gorge & Daintree River Discovery

This is a great tour for those of you who only want to spend a half day out, are short on time, or want to enjoy a nice sleep-in while on holiday! You visit two areas on this trip, Mossman Gorge and the Daintree River, with your personal tour guide.

• You will get picked up from your accommodation in Port Douglas by your personal guide for the afternoon. If you are driving up from Cairns we will meet you at the Wildlife Habitat Carpark.
• We drive north along the Captain Cook Highway, passing cane fields on the way to the Daintree River, and share a little history and many interesting facts along the way.
• You will board a cruise along the Daintree River, looking out for all manner of creatures, including the estuarine crocodile, snakes, birds, frogs, and more. Enjoy a wine, beer or soft drink while taking in the beautiful views and local wildlife.
• Next we head to Mossman Gorge, which is the southern part of the Daintree Rainforest. Your guide will take you on a walk and share their knowledge of the local flora and fauna and answer any questions you may have. This is an easy 500m return walk mostly along boardwalks.
• You can enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear rainforest stream, which can be quite refreshing, whilst being surrounded by the beautiful and healing Mossman Gorge rainforest. What a great way to spend the afternoon.
• After a great afternoon of discovering the Daintree Rainforest and River, we will drop you off at your accommodation or car.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Visting a national park.

The Daintree Rainforest is one of the most special on the planet so it is important that it is protected. Only walk on designated tracks or boardwalks, drive slowly and watch for wildlife, take home rubbish including food scraps, watch out for stinging plants and check yourself for ticks and leeches if you have been walking through the forest.

What to Bring

It is highly recommended visitors wear closed in, secure footwear when visiting the Daintree as well as bring a good supply of water, sunscreen, a change of clothes, any vital medications, camera and phone. There is not a lot of phone reception, so where possible it is recommended to travel with someone.

Special Assistance

The Discovery Centre offers full accessibility to its Daintree Café, Aerial Walkway and Interpretive Centre. Due to natural variations in the terrain, the lower level boards and walkways may not be accessible to all visitors using mobility devices.

Spend 3 hours at Mossman Gorge which offers a glimpse into the wonders of the Daintree rainforest with its crystal-clear waters, ancient ferns, and towering granite boulders. You will also visit the coastal town of Port Douglas,  1 hour Daintree River Cruise and lunch in the Daintree Village.

Travel north  along the scenic road of the Great Barrier Reef Drive which takes you into the seaside town of Port Douglas. Here we capture a view from Flagstaff Hill Lookout across Four Mile Beach. Enjoy the commentary and scenic drive through the township and the CrystalBrook Superyacht Marina.

Arriving at the Lower Daintree for morning tea and then for a 1 hour Daintree River Cruise. An incredible experience of exploring the world heritage listed area by water surrounded by the most diverse mangrove systems in the world. Search for snakes, birds, frogs and the elusive saltwater crocodile.

Enjoy a restaurant quality meal for lunch at the Daintree Teahouse inclusive of tropical fruit tastings, juice and Daintree tea & coffee surrounded by the lush tropical rainforest. We take a scenic drive through the Lower Daintree into Daintree Village before arriving at Mossman Gorge for the experience of the ancient rainforest UNESCO World Heritage Daintree.

At the Mossman Gorge Cultural center embrace the culture of the traditional people Kuku Yalanji and explore the art gallery. Your guide leads you on a journey discovering the ancient rainforests ecosystem and its unique biodiverstiy. Traversing deeper into the rainforest explore the array of birdlife, flora and fauna learning about the different species, bush foods and medicine in the rainforest. We stop at Rex’s lookout for a scenic view enjoying the afternoon sun and cool sea breeze off the Coral Sea. Our final destination at Palm Cove is a chance to stretch your legs on an afternoon stroll out on the Palm Cove Jetty for a lovely afternoon photo and scenic drive along the esplanade before returning back to Cairns.

Due to the impact of Cyclone Jasper we are unable to access Cape Tribulation Beach due to road closures and repairs.

Despite the temporary change in itinerary, our guests will still experience the highlights of the area, including a tour of Port Douglas, a visit to Thornton Beach, an opportunity to indulge in delicious ice cream in the Daintree (at guests' own expense), and an immersive exploration of the renowned Daintree Rainforest at Mossman Gorge

Embark on a thrilling 1-hour Daintree River Cruise, enjoy a sumptuous lunch at the Daintree Teahouse, partake in a guided walk at Mossman Gorge, and have free time for a refreshing swim (weather permitting) One amazing day in our very own, natural paradise.

Tour departs Cairns, Palm Cove, Trinity Beach and Port Douglas

This full-day tour for those being picked up in Cairns and the beaches begins with a trip along the scenic coastal Great Barrier Reef Drive to Port Douglas. The road hugs the mountain side, and we stop at Rex Lookout to enjoy stunning views of the Coral Sea. From here, we continue to Port Douglas, picking up any extra guests and stopping at Flagstaff Hill, which overlooks the famous 4 Mile Beach.

The next stop is Mossman Gorge, where we refresh with local tea, coffee or a cold drink, before exploring this secluded gorge and rainforest paradise. The cool, clear waters of Mossman River tumble through and over giant granite boulders. We’ll take a guided walk, and you have the opportunity for a swim, should you wish to do so.

We then continue north to the Daintree Tea House and enjoy a quality restaurant lunch, with a choice of meals available, before stepping aboard a solar-powered electric boat to take a 1-hour cruise on the Daintree River. Keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles and other local wildlife.

Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest meets the reef, and you can take it all in from the Kulki Lookout. However due to road closures & repairs we are only able to travel as far as Thornton Beach which is approx 13 km south of Cape Tribulation Beach.This is the most northern point of our day tour adventure, so from here, we begin the journey home, but not before a quick stop at the Daintree Ice-Cream Company, where you can purchase locally made tropical ice cream (at your own expense)

Option 1 - Traditional Aboriginal Fishing

Arrive at Cooya (Kuyu Kuyu) Beach for your Coast & Cultural Walk with a Kubirri Warra clan member. Cooya Beach is the traditional fishing grounds of the Kuku Yalanji people. Your guide will take you on a journey across Cooya Beach, demonstrating and teaching traditional fishing and gathering techniques that are still used today to source food for their family.  The experience calls for a medium to high level of fitness as guests will be walking across Cooya Beach, through mudflats and wading through coastal waters up to knee height

Option 2 - Aboriginal Art & Culture

Delve into the ancient culture of local Aboriginal people. Join an art class at Janbal Gallery with Aboriginal artist Brian ‘Binna’ Swindley. Binna will share his experiences, his culture and how his people share their stories through art. Make your own canvas to take home, learning techniques from Binna

Visit Manjal Dimbi, the traditional lands of the Kuku Yalanji people. Arrive at Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, where you will be greeted with a traditional Aboriginal Welcome to country smoking ceremony. Take some time to peruse the gallery and local crafts store at the centre before journeying into the rainforest of Mossman Gorge itself with your experienced Aboriginal guide for an interpretive walk through this ancient environment. Learn about the local Kuku Yalanji people’s special relationship with the land here.

Return to the Mossman Gorge Centre for a delicious lunch at the Mayi Café.

Alexandra Lookout Alexandra Lookout provides a fantastic photo opportunity. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Daintree Rainforest to the ocean.

Guided Rainforest Walk Mossman Gorge  Your local guide will then take you along an elevated boardwalk into the Southern end of the Daintree National Park, providing detail on the flora, fauna and cultural history and significance of the Daintree Rainforest.  Opportunity for a freshwater swim at Mossman Gorge, subject to conditions on the day.

4WD Bloomfield Track- CLOSED Billy Tea Safaris is one of the only operators who can travel on the Bloomfield Track due on their custom-made 4WD vehicles.

Emmagen Creek Freshwater Swim- NOT ACCESSIBLE Cool off with a freshwater swim at Emmagen Creek. This also makes for a fabulous photo opportunity and is relaxing and refreshing! Swimming in the middle of the Daintree Rainforest?! What more could you ask for?

Lunch  Enjoy lunch with your fellow travellers, and then it's off to Cape Tribulation Beach. The only place where the rainforest meets the reef. All dietary requirements must be notified at the time of reservation or at least 48 hours before travel. We cater for vegetarians and most other requirements within reason and providing they are of a medical nature.

Ice-cream stop No Daintree Rainforest day tour is complete without a stop for exotic homemade ice cream at the Daintree Ice-creamery. You will be amazed at the array of flavours made from the orchids on their property. After your sweet ice cream treat and a little exploration of this lush property, it's time to head home.

Get sand on your feet as you join a guided beach walk where the "Rainforest meets the Reef".  Savour a delicious lunch at a local restaurant amidst the unique backdrop of the Daintree Forest (please advise in advance of ay special dietary requirements) followed by a stop for a a delicious tropical fruit ice-cream enroute to the Daintree Ferry.
