In fact, our family visits Niagara Falls almost every year during the spring. I am just a sucker for tulips, so this is one of the best places for us to visit, which is not too far from Toronto, for me to enjoy the spring blooms.

There are so many incredible things to do in Niagara Falls in spring. With the weather getting warmer, and many of the outdoor attractions opening up for the season, you will have plenty of activities to choose from to fill up your Niagara Falls itinerary.

1. Witness the Power of Niagara Falls

It’s definitely a photographer’s dream to see the Falls in any season. During the spring, the water levels are pretty high, so Niagara Falls is at its fullest and most powerful.

Stand at the brink and be mesmerized by the flow, or watch the rainbows formed by the sunlight reflecting in the mist. Listen to the thunder of the water crashing as you stand behind the falls.

You can take a walk along the Niagara River, feel the mist at the brink of the falls, head further downstream to the whirlpools, or view the falls from the comfort of a falls-view hotel room.

Journey Behind the Falls takes you up close and behind the scenes of this thundering curtain of water.

First, you will take a journey 125 feet down to the 130-year-old tunnels. Here, you can take a peek at the Horseshoe Falls from underneath.

Next, you will have the opportunity to head outdoors onto the viewing platform. This is a really up-close view of the falls!

Keep in mind that even during the less-busy shoulder season, finding parking on Clifton Hill will be next to impossible.

Instead, your best bet is to head to the large public parking lot just beyond the SkyWheel. It’s only about a 5-minute walk to Clifton Hill from there.

9. See Jaw-Dropping Views From the Niagara SkyWheel

Looking for a unique way to check out Niagara Falls? Look no further than the Niagara SkyWheel!

It’s a massive observation wheel that takes you up to a whopping 53 meters (175 feet) in the air. That means you’ll be treated to some seriously incredible panoramic views of the falls, as well as the surrounding areas like Clifton Hill, the Niagara River, and Niagara Parks.

And if you think the views are great during the day, just wait until you see them at night. The Niagara SkyWheel features climate-controlled gondolas that are perfect for taking in the gorgeous illumination of the falls.

A great way to take a break from sightseeing, listen to the recording that talks all about the landmarks in the area, while you relax for the 10-minute duration of the ride.

Located on Clifton Hill, Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum was established in 1964. Inside, the Odditorium is one of the coolest attractions you’ll come across on Clifton Hill.

As you walk through the exhibit, you’ll find a ton of interactive displays, rare artifacts, puzzles, illusions, and more. They even have a virtual tightrope and a special kids’ crawl area, so there’s something for everyone.

But the best part? The artwork collections are just plain weird. You’ll find all kinds of strange and curious pieces from all over the world.

In fact, it’s home to over 400 incredibly odd exhibits, spread out over 15 fun-filled galleries. It’s definitely an experience you won’t forget.

11. Have Dinner at the Niagara Falls Skylon Tower

The Skylon Tower is an iconic attraction in Niagara Falls that offers breathtaking views 775 feet above the falls. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly meal or a romantic dinner, this is the perfect place to enjoy your meal while taking in the stunning scenery.

The Skylon Tower actually has two restaurants to choose from. The Revolving Dining Room is the first one and it rotates a full 360 degrees every hour.

The restaurant provides fantastic views of both the Horseshoe and American Falls, the Buffalo, New York and Toronto skylines, as well as the Great Gorge. This is definitely the place for special occasions, but don’t worry about the dress code, you can dress up or go casual.

The Revolving Dining is also family-friendly, offering a kids’ menu with all the favourites. Reservations are definitely recommended, especially during holidays.

The second restaurant is the Summit Suite Buffet Dining Room. This is a buffet-only restaurant that offers incredible food choices for Sunday Brunch, Lunch and Dinner, and it’s perfect for family-affordable casual dining.

Although both restaurants are on the pricier side, they provide a unique dining experience, and you won’t find views like this anywhere else.

The Skylon Tower isn’t just about dining, it’s also about the view. When you dine at the Tower, access to the indoor/outdoor observation deck is free, which is a great deal.

You can take the exterior glass-enclosed “Yellow Bug Elevators” to the top, and during the 52-second ride, you’ll have incredible views of the Falls. Once you arrive at the Observatory, the visibility on a clear day is up to an astonishing 125 km (80 miles)!

If you’re not in the mood for dining, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the view by purchasing tickets to the observation deck. The Skylon Tower offers plenty of parking options, so you won’t have to worry about finding a spot for your car.

While you’re visiting the Tower, be sure to have a look around the concourse. You’ll find opportunities for shopping, playtime in the family fun center, or even watching the 3D/4D Falls Movie “Legends of Niagara Falls”.

12. Enjoy the Niagara Parks Power Station & Currents Show

Built to utilize the force of the Horseshoe Falls, the Niagara Parks and Power Station is an impressive engineering feat that is over a century old. It was completed in 1905 and marked the establishment of the first significant power plant on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

Hersey’s Chocolate World is a must-stop destination for any chocolate-lover, no matter what time of the year you are visiting Niagara Falls! 14. Make a Splash at the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark

Although spring in Canada means we are thawing out of our winter freeze, it still isn’t warm enough to go to a splash pad. So if the kids are itching for some watery fun, head over to Fallsview Indoor Waterpark in Niagara Falls Canada.

You will be happy to know that the temperature is maintained at a balmy 29 degrees Celsius (84 degrees Fahrenheit) year-round.

The Niagara Fallsview Waterpark  is located just one block from the falls. It is directly connected to the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel, the Crowne Plaza Niagara Falls-Fallsview Hotel, and Casino Niagara.

This means that if you are staying in one of these awesome hotels, you won’t even need to step outside, to get to the waterpark. In fact, you can probably even book a stay-and-play package deal to save some money.

The Niagara Fallsview Waterpark features an enormous water play area. Not only will you find a full-sized wave pool, 6-story high waterslides, and a 1,000-gallon tipping bucket, but there are also two adult-only jacuzzis for some kid-free.

During the summer, the waterpark also features an outdoor activity pool, plunge bowl, sundeck, and children’s play area.

Don’t forget to take a peek outside, where the fully-operational model train circles the 122-metre (400-foot) track and the tiny houses, schools and fire station of the miniature village. Originally built in the 1960s, the train was actually once a part of the Cullen Gardens & Miniature Village, a major tourist attraction in Whitby, Ontario.

Avoid the Crowds

Niagara Falls is one of the largest tourist attractions in Ontario. With more than 13 million visitors flocking to the area yearly, the falls get pretty busy during the peak summer season.

During the spring, you will find the area significantly less busy. And although a few of the attractions may still be closed or operating on a limited schedule, there are still plenty of things to keep you busy during your visit.

The shoulder season is when you will find shorter wait times, have less trouble finding parking, and there will be fewer people crowding the trails and walkways. This can be especially welcome if you are pushing a stroller, or visiting with someone who is less mobile.

Avoid the Extreme Temperatures

While summer is a nice time to be outside, Southern Ontario can get pretty hot and humid during July and August. So heading to Niagara in the spring, May in particular, is actually perfect.

Not only will you have plenty of sunshine, but the temperatures will be warm enough that frostbite is no longer a thought, and you won’t die of heat exhaustion either.

Spring is actually one of our favourite times to visit Niagara Falls for this very reason. You may still need a sweater, but the temperatures are nice enough to spend plenty of time outdoors.

For the most part, hotels will definitely be less expensive during the spring, and may even have special offers and promotions happening.

Unfortunately, this usually does not apply to hotels with indoor waterparks, as those are pretty busy no matter what the season.

At the southern end of Niagara Gorge, the three falls that Niagara Falls consists of are the American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. In summer, as much as six million cubic feet (168,000 m 3 ) of water passes through the falls every minute — wow!

Having the highest flow rate of all North American waterfalls, the enormous Horseshoe Falls straddles the border of the US and Canada. In contrast, the smaller siblings American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are entirely located on the US side of the border.

There’s no shortage of ways to enjoy this gift from Mother Earth. Observe Niagara Falls from the overlooks, take a boat ride up close, feel the extreme power at its base — only feet from the overwhelming masses — or admire it all from the air.

The waterfall is pretty during daytime but also special after dusk, especially in combination with the colorful lightshows and beautiful fireworks that are proud Niagara traditions.

There are several memorable ways to experience the Niagara Falls. Sure, just viewing the falls from the overlooks is spectacular, but there’s much more you can do to take it all in. Here are the best things to do when visiting Niagara Falls.

Admire the falls from the overlooks

Gazing at the Niagara Falls is an experience you never forget. You get the best view from Table Rock Welcome Centre on the Canadian side of the border, brilliantly located within steps of the thundering water that rushes over the Horseshoe Fall’s brink.

There’s no entrance fee to the breathtaking overlooks — this is a totally free thing to do!

Take a Niagara Gorge boat tour

The cliffside vantage points are one thing, while the duck perspective, from the water surface, is something completely different. Taking a boat tour through Niagara Gorge, you look up on masses of water tumbling over the brinks and down into Niagara Gorge. So close to the action — the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls — you even sense the mist created by these huge water quantities.

You can take a boat ride from either the US side or the Canadian side of the border. In the US, the boat ride is called Maid of the Mist; in Canada, it’s Hornblower Niagara Cruises. They offer very similar experiences, with the main difference that they depart from different sides of the gorge.

Seasonal closure: The Niagara boat rides don’t run during the colder months of the year. Typically the tours operate from April to October; check with Maid of the Mist or Hornblower Niagara Cruises for exact dates.

Feel the Cave of the Winds

Cave of the Winds, on the US side of Niagara Falls, lets you walk closer to the falls than you ever could imagine. Put your poncho on and take the elevator down to Niagara George, where wooden walkways lead to the aptly named Hurricane Deck. Here, you find yourself only feet away from the Bridal Veil Falls. This may be the very edge of the mighty Niagara Falls, but its power is still unmistakable — prepare to get wet.

Seasonal closure: The full attraction, just like the boat tours, is only open during the warmer months of the year. During the winter season, the wooden walkways and the Hurricane Deck are closed. See the Cave of the Winds opening dates and hours before visiting Niagara Falls.

Embark on the Journey Behind The Falls

Want to discover Niagara Falls hidden side? Descend 125 feet (38 m) and, to the powerful sound of the unthinkable amounts of crashing water, explore the tunnels behind the Horseshoe Falls. Stop for the Cataract Portal and Great Falls Portal, loudly and clearly proving that you really are right behind the world-famous Niagara Falls. Then continue to the jaw-dropping observation decks nestled at the Horseshoe Falls’ very foot — say cheese!

Gawk at Niagara Gorge from the air

From the side, below and behind are all superb perspectives, but you can also soar high above the Niagara Falls. Take a helicopter ride or plane tour to experience the Niagara Falls like a bird. This way you stay dry while getting an amazing view of not only the falls but also the surrounding Niagara River area.

Marvel at colorful illuminations

Dusk doesn’t mean that you can no longer appreciate Niagara Falls. Each evening of the year, Niagara Falls transforms into an illuminated masterpiece; think hundreds of decorative LED lights making Niagara Gorge dance in vivid colors.

Celebrate Niagara with fireworks

Niagara Falls boasts Canada’s longest running fireworks series. Fireworks are set off from within the Niagara Gorge — between American Falls and Horseshoe Falls — throughout the year (but with fewer displays in the off season).

From where to watch the fireworks? Any spot facing Niagara Gorge, such as Queen Victoria Park on the Canadian side and Prospect Point on the US side, is an excellent pick.

Getting around Niagara Falls

Queen Victoria Park is the area tying the town and falls together. This is from where you can board a Canadian boat tour and, at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls, access Table Rock Visitor Centre.

Walking is the primary method of transport at the falls. From the Horseshoe Falls hotels, it takes roughly 20 minutes to walk down via Queen Victoria Park to Table Rock Visitor Centre.

Using the Niagara Parks Incline Railway , available for a fee, is another way of getting around Niagara Falls. It takes you from the Horseshoe Falls hotel area to the brink of the falls, giving you easier access to what you came for.

What about shuttles?

On the Canadian side, the year-round WEGO shuttle operates three lines taking you between hotels and attractions. To get north to Niagara-on-the-Lake, there’s also a seasonal line departing from the Floral Clock station.

On the US side, the seasonal (and free) Discover Niagara shuttle runs the “Falls to the Fort Route” along Niagara River, connecting Niagara Falls with Old Fort Niagara on Lake Ontario.

Best time to visit Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a nice place to visit any month of the year. However, each season has its own advantages and the best time to visit Niagara Falls depends on what you’re after.

June to August means peak season at Niagara Falls, with more visitors and higher hotel rates. But if you want that ideal weather, summer is the best time to visit. Now, temperatures tend to be in the comfy high 70s (27 °C). Also, all Niagara Falls attractions, including boat tours and Cave of the Wind, are open during this period.

With the crowds gone and temperatures ranging in the lower 70s (21 °C), September offers superb conditions for enjoying each perspective of Niagara Falls. Then, suddenly, temperatures abruptly plummet and some of Niagara Falls’ attractions shutter up — October is when boat tours and Cave of the Winds close for the season. On the upside, the trees framing Niagara Gorge show their brilliant fall colors now.

December to February is low season, meaning this is the time to score a sweet deal on accommodations. But make sure to bring your favorite coat; weather is freezing and blizzards are not uncommon at Niagara Falls. Expect a beautiful visit although not as much time in the outdoors as a visit in summer would bring.

Niagara Falls goes from frosty to outright pleasant in spring. March is too cold for boat tours and Cave of the Winds, which begin to operate for the season in April. Hitting a sweet spot with nice weather and manageable crowds, May sees daily temperatures hover around the high 60°F (21 °C).

Where to stay at Niagara Falls

You have two main options for where to stay at Niagara Falls: the US or Canadian side. While there are convenient hotels on both sides, the perspectives on offer are significantly different.

The Canadian side provides those iconic panoramic views capturing the entire trio of Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. On the Canadian side, any spot along Niagara River is breathtaking.

For a close up, the Horseshoe Falls’ signature bend means that you can view its cascading water more directly in front of you from Canada than the US.

On the other hand, you get the most intimate views of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls on the US side. But keep in mind that the overlooks here are side based, in contrast to the Canadian head-on perspective.

Here, where Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario, the pace is slow and the scale small, making for a lovely complement to a trip to Niagara Falls.

Add to that the after-dark fireworks and illuminations.

Niagara Falls is open for visitors 24 hours a day every day of the year. However, some attractions, such as boat tours and Cave of the Winds, are closed during the colder months of the year, typically from October to April.

Gawking at the majestic Niagara Falls is completely free. This includes taking in the falls from the overlooks as well as enjoying the popular light shows and fireworks. Other experiences, including boat tours, Cave of the Winds and the Journey Behind The Falls, require fees.

After taking an elevator 230 feet to the base of the gorge, you'll be able to walk along a quarter-mile boardwalk that overlooks the Great Gorge Rapids from the Canadian side of the Niagara River. Along the walk are several observation areas where you can get a great view of the rapids. According to the park, these viewing platforms are where you can capture the best photos within the park.

Some recent visitors were disappointed with the short boardwalk, but others loved being able to see the force of the rapids up close and praised the incredible views. Several reviewers also suggested stopping to read the informational plaques that are placed along the boardwalk, as they provide interesting information about the daredevils who have attempted to cross the river.

Several trailheads along the rim of the gorge descend via wooden or stone stairs into the base of the ravine, where explorers can choose from a variety of trail lengths and difficulties.

The Devil’s Hole trail starts at a staircase in Devil’s Hole State Park and offers a moderate, 3-mile out-and-back hike past the rapids and the spooky Cave of the Evil Spirit. Or, hikers can connect to the Whirlpool Rapids trail, a 3.4-mile round-trip trek from the stairs at Whirlpool State Park that rewards more experienced hikers with challenging terrain near the famed Niagara Whirlpool. The Niagara Gorge Trailhead Center offers access points to even more trails of varying difficulties.

Since 1916, the Whirlpool Aero Car has sent passengers 3,500 feet across the Niagara Gorge to marvel at the river below. Along the way, riders are treated to bird’s-eye views of the turquoise waters swirling into the Niagara Whirlpool, whitecapped Class VI rapids and jetboats ripping down the river. Although the car crosses the international border four times because of the way the gorge meanders, the ride starts and ends on the Canadian side, and thus, no passport is required to ride. The historic cable car – which is suspended from six sturdy cables – has undergone several upgrades since its 1916 debut, including most recently in 2023, when it was removed from its tracks and sent to Quebec for refurbishment. Today, it's equipped with brand-new mechanical parts, non-slip floor, roof and fresh paint.

Inside the world’s largest free-flying indoor aviary, pathways wind through a multilevel rainforest teeming with tropical birds in every color of the rainbow.

Interact directly with feathered residents at the attraction's Base Camp, where you'll meet exotic animals and friendly parrots (entry is included in admission; holding a parrot costs CA$10 or about $7). There's also Lorikeet Landing, where colorful little lorikeets may land on visitors’ arms when offered a sip of nectar (entry included in admission; nectar costs CA$5 or about $4). Meanwhile, the Night Jungle, set to resemble ancient ruins, is the place to catch a glimpse of nocturnal animals like bats, owls and amphibians. The exhibit ecosystem is also home to lush plants, flowers and trees from around the world, which offer nesting spots for the birds and beautiful surroundings to wander.

Skylon Tower Skylon Tower

Once you've seen the falls from below and behind, consider seeing them from above at the Skylon Tower. Dominating the Ontario skyline, this 775-foot high tower offers particularly breathtaking views of the Horseshoe Falls. You can enjoy the view from either the indoor or the outdoor observation deck and – if you don't mind shelling out a small fortune – you can also revel in the landscape from the tower's revolving restaurant. To reach the top of the tower, you'll board a glass-enclosed elevator that takes just 52 seconds to ascend.

Many recent visitors recommend timing your stop at the tower at night to catch a bird's-eye glimpse when the falls are illuminated. A few also said it was worth it to buy the ticket package that allows for both a day entry and a night entry to the tower. If you're hoping to eat at the tower, either at the buffet or in the formal dining room, consider going early (between 4:30 and 5 p.m.) to take advantage of "early bird" pricing.

Inniskillin Wines Inniskillin Wines free

Aside from the falls themselves, the Niagara Falls region is known for one other thing: wine. If you have the time, take a drive north along Ontario's scenic Niagara Parkway to Inniskillin Wines and vineyards throughout in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This winery is Canada’s first estate winery and known for its ice wine, which is made from grapes that are left to freeze on the vine over the winter. Once temperatures drop to minus 8 degrees Celsius (about 18 degrees Fahrenheit), the grapes are then collected and allowed to thaw, a process that helps intensify their flavor.

Recent visitors recommended making a stop here, even if you're not interested in tasting the region's famous ice wine. Many noted welcoming and knowledgeable tour and tasting guides, along with tasty food options.

It’s no secret that Niagara Falls is one of the top attractions in all of Canada (and the world). So if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re thinking about visiting and you’re looking for things to do when you visit!

And whether you’re travelling as a couple on a weekend trip , as a family with kids, or as a solo adventurer, there is no shortage of both touristy and non-touristy things to do and see!

We had the best time exploring Niagara Falls (the Canadian side). It was Lisa’s first time and she loved spending time by the falls themselves.

That said, Niagara Falls (the Canadian city) can be overwhelming at times – and finding unique things to do seems difficult with all the top attractions right in your face.

So, we’ve pulled together this very detailed guide on basically everything there is to do – even if you’re exploring Niagara Falls at night or in the winter! Let’s explore the Canadian side of Niagara Falls!

Niagara Falls Quick Guide

Best Time to Visit:  Very busy in the summer season but best chance for nice weather. Autumn for colours – and Niagara Falls is also worth a visit in winter!

Getting Around:  Downtown Niagara Falls is very walkable, but you can also make use of the WEGO Bus .

Top Things To Do In Niagara Falls, Canada

Let’s dive into this list of things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada. Of course, this isn’t everything there is to do and see and we only briefly cover the American Side of the Falls.

However, we think it’s a well-rounded list of the top attractions people come for as well as things to do that are connected to exploring the natural beauty of the Niagara Region!

There are lots of great tour, attractions, and activities in Niagara Falls including boat cruises, museum tickets, nature attractions, and more. You can explore top activities in Niagara Falls on both  Viator  and  GetYourGuide .

Keep in mind that some places or activities are only open/available during the warmer months. For example, the Voyage to the Falls boat cruise do not run in the winter. Don’t worry – there are plenty of great indoor alternatives to choose from!

Admire Niagara Falls

You don’t need to justify coming to Niagara Falls. There’s a good chance people already know what you want to see when you get there – the waterfalls!

The famous falls are a very popular Ontario attraction for a reason. Luckily for you, there are three waterfalls to keep and your adventurous soul busy.

As we mentioned above, Niagara Falls is a term used to describe the set of three waterfalls at the one site where the Niagara River cuts away at the Niagara Gorge. The waterfalls are as follows:

• Horseshoe Falls  or  Canadian Falls  (shown above) is the one you are probably thinking of when you think of “Niagara Falls”. This is the waterfall that is attributed to the Canadian side. It’s the one with the distinct “U” shape!

• The American  Falls  (shown above and below) is the waterfall that is totally on the US side of the river. It’s very flat in profile with many rocks at the base.  
• Finally, there is the Bridal Veil Falls (shown above and below) which is the very small waterfall to the right of the larger American Falls.

Now, if you are on the Canadian side, you can see all three waterfalls perfectly – which is why some claim the Canadian side of the river is the best to visit.

However, the US side has many green parks and similar boat ride attractions so it’s definitely also worth checking out for a different perspective.

The thing about the Canadian side is that there is a massive walkway that follows the river – giving you great vantage points for all the Falls. Close to Horseshoe Falls, you’ll find the Table Rock Welcome Centre.

We’ll cover it in more detail but there are restaurants and many attractions actually start here. You can go behind Horseshoe Falls with the attraction “ Journey Behind the Falls ” and walk on those lower paths to get really close while you wear the rain ponchos!

Now, if you are exploring the US side of the river, you can see the Falls from Niagara Falls State Park. Like the Canadian side, there are upper walkways that allow you up-close views of the Falls.

There are also lower walkways to get  really close  to the American Falls. These wooden walkways are called the Cave of the Winds.

Niagara Hornblower Cruise

Address: 5920 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 6X8, Canada

One of the most popular attractions (if not the most popular) on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is the Hornblower Cruise  – also known as “Voyage to the Falls”! 

To clarify: you might be familiar with the “Maid of the Mist” boat tour that takes you to the Falls, too. This is the boat tour from  the American side of the River.  It does the exact same thing as the Hornblower – but you can check out the Maid of the Mist boat tour here .

If you know you want to hop on the Hornblower Cruise on the Canadian side, you can buy your skip-the-line Hornblower tickets in advance here . 

You can buy tickets onsite through the self-serve kiosks but given the visitor numbers in the summer season, we’d suggest buying in advance to ensure your date and time.

Plus, this skip-the-line Hornblower ticket means you can head right down to the funicular to get on your cruise!

To get down to the boats, you can actually take a funicular ride. The Niagara Hornblower Funicular ride is an attraction in itself which we cover right below this one!

Once you are down there, you dawn a red poncho (to distinguish yourself from the blue ponchos from the American Maid of the Mist tour) and off you go towards Horseshoe Falls!

These boats have an upper deck where you get exposed to all the elements but they also have lower-level viewing with seats. 

So, to summarize – you can check out tickets to take the Hornblower Cruise from the Canadian Side here . If you wanted to do the Maid of the Mist on the American side (and visit the Cave of the Winds), you can find those cruise tickets here.

Niagara Hornblower Funicular + Riverside Patio 

If getting a different perspective of the Falls is what you’re after but you want to keep things on the budget side, you might want to just ride the Hornblower Funicular.

While the Funicular is meant to take people down for a boat cruise (and is included in the cruise ticket price), you can take it for the cheap ride and the unique views as you glide down unto the Gorge.

The Funicular was originally built back in 1894 and was rebuilt carefully to preserve the delicate walls and plants of the Niagara Gorge. The cable cars offer amazing views as you descent – and they even have audio commentary!

Once at the bottom, there’s a large Riverside Patio where you can enjoy a bite to eat, a drink, or just a snack as you enjoy the views of the Falls and watch the cruisers head off on their adventure! 

Journey Behind the Falls

If heading  behind Horseshoe Falls is something you’re looking to do, then you should definitely do the Journey Behind the Falls !

Once you head down 125 feet, you can walk through tunnels that snake behind the thundering waterfalls. From there, you can emerge onto the lower platforms at Horseshoe Falls (with rain poncho on, of course) to get up close to the action.

The start of this adventure is located within the Table Rock Welcome Centre – which is right beside the brink of Horseshoe Falls (shown in the photo above). This is a top experience at Niagara Falls and it’s usually packed together with the Hornblower Cruise for an ultimate day !

Ever wanted to go zip-lining? Have you been before? In any case, why not go zip-lining as you head straight towards Horseshoe Falls!?

WildPlay (the outdoor adventure company) brings you this 670-metre-long zip line starting from an elevated platform above where you get Hornblower tickets! You can check out MistRider zip-line tickets here .

Clifton Hill Attractions

No stop to Niagara Falls Canada is complete without a stop at Clifton Hill – known as “The Street of Fun at the Falls!”

Even if you aren’t travelling with kids, you need to walk up and down Clifton just once. This very touristy area is absolutely packed with attractions, museums, shops, eateries, sweet treats, and more! You have to see it with your own eyes.

There are some attractions that are more well-known than others – like Ripley’s Believe It or Not Odditorium , Dinosaur Adventure Golf, The House of Frankenstein, the Great Canadian Midway, Guinness World of Records, Louis Tussauds Wax Museum, Escape Rooms, bowling, and more.

‘We had one pass through and stopped into a few sweet shops to check out the chocolate, fudge, and candy options. 

You can even do more like go Go Karting at the Niagara Speedway – which is located at the top of the hill.

The hill itself overlooks the American Falls with the Sheraton Hotel standing at the base of all the attractions.

There are plenty of places to eat on the Hill but do check the reviews and the menus because some places have horrible service and have really high prices for the tourists.

Overall, Clifton Hill (and the surrounding downtown area along Victoria Avenue) are kind of like sensory overload – great for kids, though and something you definitely have to experience once.

If you plan on visiting a few attractions, you might consider a Clifton Hill Fun Pass which essentially gets you admission into 6 top attractions like the Niagara Skywheel, Dino Adventure Golf, and more!

Niagara SkyWheel

Address: 4960 Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 3N4, Canada

Speaking of the Niagara SkyWheel – while you’re exploring the Clifton Hill area, it’s hard to miss the Niagara SkyWheel.

Opened in 2006 and standing at 53 metres tall, this ferris wheel is another great way to see the Falls from a unique perspective.

It’s also located right above the Dinosaur Adventure Golf so there’s no shortage of fun when you get off! If you want to go for a loop, you can buy your SkyWheel tickets in advance here .

Skylon Tower

Address: 5200 Robinson St, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 2A3, Canada

If heights are for you, then a trip up the Skylon Tower is for you! Opened back in 1965, the tower is located right downtown – you cannot miss it wherever you are. You get to take the “Yellow Bug Elevators” to the top where you get 360-degree views of the Falls and the surrounding area!

You can get your Skylon tickets here for the observation deck – but you can even head up there for a meal if you are hungry at their famous Revolving Dining Room Restaurant and or their Summit Suite Buffet.

Either way, you get to eat about 236 metres above the Falls!

Niagara Helicopter Tour

Address: 3731 Victoria Ave, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 6V5, Canada

If you want a bird’s eye view of the waterfalls and the surrounding area, a helicopter tour might be for you. A ride with Niagara Helicopter Tours is a memorable experience that’ll stick with you for a long time! 

Departing from the heliport north of downtown, you’ll head over the Niagara Gorge/River back towards to main Falls area. You can even see as far as the Toronto skyline on clear days on this 12-minute flight!

Eric did a helicopter tour with his dad in the Canadian Rocky Mountains so a trip over Niagara Falls is definitely next on the list!

Queen Victoria Park

Address: 6345 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 6X8, Canada

Situated along the upper walkway along the Niagara Parkway (the road that drives along the Gorge beside the river), you’ll find a lovely green space called Queen Victoria Park.

This large park kind of separates the whole downtown areas near the American Falls and the Canadian Falls. We had a wander through and it was a lovely space away from all the noise and people!

There’s actually this old-looking house – it’s currently the headquarters of the Niagara Parks Police. There are many statues and historical sites scattered throughout the park area.

The flowers were also beautiful when we visited – and Niagara Parks makes a big deal about their well-maintained flowers!

Niagara Falls Nightly Fireworks + Illumination of the Falls

If you’re into fireworks, then you should really head to Niagara Falls in the summertime. Each summer – from June to September with additional weekends after – there is a fireworks display at 10:00 pm over Niagara Falls!

The fireworks can be seen from many vantage points – so you don’t have to be right at the river’s edge to see them. Many people can see them from their hotel windows, balconies, and some other places around downtown!

As for the Falls themselves, they light up, too! Each evening – whatever the season – special lights create the effect of illuminating Horseshoe Falls.

These lights follow calendar dates and are a sight to see for sure! If you want the ultimate experience, you should hop on a Firework Night Cruise to the Falls to see the fireworks and Illumination up close.

Fallsview Casino Resort

Address: 6380 Fallsview Blvd, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 7X5, Canada

One of the largest attractions at Niagara Falls is the casinos – and Fallsview Casino Resort is the main one.

Located right downtown on Fallsview Boulevard, this massive complex is a hotel and casino and includes restaurants and a live entertainment venue for shows, musical performances, and more.

For some of the best views of the Falls, a nice walk, a cool breeze, and the chance to “stand in two countries at once”, check out Rainbow Bridge!

Originally built in back in the 1940s, this arch bridge is also a main international border between the US and Canada. There are customs checkpoints at each end because the line and the flags in the middle mark where the border is! 

If you want to explore the US side of the Falls, this is the way to go. Just be sure to have your passports/appropriate visas with you! The bridge is good for car traffic as well as having a safe pedestrian-only walkway.

There’s also a toll to cross which is more for cars than just people walking. If you want to walk from Canada to go and take photos on the bridge but NOT enter the US, this is also possible.

Either way, you have to pay four quarters (US quarters OR Canadian quarters) as foot traffic leaving Canada. Be sure to have change before you go because there IS a change machine on site but it can break and the lines can be long!

After you snap a few photos with your feet on each side of the border line, you’ll have to re-enter Canada through customs – but this shouldn’t be a problem since you just came from there!

IMAX Niagara Falls

Address: 6170 Fallsview Blvd, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 7T8, Canada

If you’ve had enough of the outdoors for one day and want to be entertained but also comfortable, why not check out the Niagara IMAX theatre?

Located right downtown – close to the hotels like the Hilton – you cannot miss the massive pyramid building. Inside, the IMAX experience is like none other. 

The show all about the Falls – Miracles, Myths, an Magic – teaches you about the history of the Falls and the people who have challenged the Falls and lived to tell the tales!

There are also audio guides available for the movie to be experienced in multiple languages. You can check here for your IMAX ticket .

Niagara Falls History Museum

Address: 5810 Ferry St, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 1S9, Canada

If you’re interested in Niagara Falls – the region – and not just the waterfalls, then check out the Niagara Falls History Museum . Opened in its current version in 2010, this museum is dedicated to telling the rich history of the region.

From what the river/nature looked like back in the day to the wars fought between the British and the Americans in the bloody battles of 1812, this museum is packed with things to check out and even  try on!

The museum is located close to downtown but you can take the WEGO as it heads down Lundy’s Lane.

This area is also packed with military history – like the Drummond Hill Cemetery and the Battle of Lundy’s Lane – so it’s a great place to dive into history if that’s your interest!

Bird Kingdom

Address: 5651 River Rd, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 7M7, Canada

It’s easy to get close to wildlife if you’re in Niagara Falls – just head to Bird Kingdom !

Located just a minute walk from the American Falls (and under the Rainbow Bridge), this massive glass building is actually the largest free-flying aviary in the world!

This means that the birds get to fly about in their natural habitat – which is maintained indoors all year round.

Bird Kingdom specializes in tropical bird species (the ones that are pretty colours). It’s great because there are also many different areas to explore.

In some of them, you can hold some of the birds and learn about them from the staff and guides.

The Botanical Gardens + Butterfly Conservatory

Address: 2565 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 2S7, Canada

The farther you move from downtown Niagara Falls, the quieter and more natural the scenery gets. If this is calling to you, then head for the Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory.

Located about a 10-minute drive north on Niagara Parkway from downtown, this 99-acre complex founded in 1936 is maintained by Niagara Parks.

These days, visitors can wander the grounds, check out the beautiful displays and gardens – and the world-famous rose gardens known for having over 2,400 roses!

Onsite with the Botanical Gardens is another unique Niagara attraction – the Butterfly Conservatory!

You get to walk through a lush tropical climate with waterfalls and plants to check out over 2,000 butterflies! The giant glass greenhouse full of plants and animals is a highlight of the experience – and you even get a short informational video to start off.

If you want them to land on you, move slowly and wear light, bright colours. Your visit is a self-guided tour so you can walk through it at your own pace.

The White Water Walk

Address: 4330 River Rd, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 6T2, Canada

If you want to get up close to the rushing river – but not in the actual river like on a boat cruise – then the White Water Walk might be for you.

After you head down into the Niagara Gorge about 70 metres by elevator, you get about 400 metres of boardwalk to do a self-guided tour. There are tons to learn about – like the 410 million-year-old rock layers and the plant and animal life. 

The boardwalk even features viewing platforms at the edge of the river so that you can get closer to the famous Whirlpool Rapids.

This is something we didn’t do but drove by and DEFINITELY want to check out next time we visit.

Niagara Glen + Nature Centre

Address: 3050 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara Falls, ON, Canada

Sticking to the theme of natural attraction north of downtown, check out the Nature Glen .

You get to head down stairways that take you along 4 kilometres of pathways deep within the Niagara Gorge. The area is known for its unique Carolinian Forest, many fossils, rock formations, and more.

The Glen area looks out over the Niagara River Whirlpool which is always fascinating to see from different vantage points! There are guided hiking tours and you can even go bouldering at the Niagara Glen!

Once you are done hiking – or before you begin – you can also check out the Niagara Glen Nature Centre .

This Centre that overlooks the river offers you beverages and souvenirs. They also sell bouldering permits if you want to climb around on the rocks in the Glen.

Whirlpool Aero Car

Address: 3850 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 3E8, Canada

One of the most extreme ways to discover the Niagara Whirlpool (besides a jet boat, see below) is to soar over the top of it! To do this, you can take the Whirlpool Aero Car.

Built back in 1916 by Spanish engineers, a one-way 10-minute ride takes passengers over 500 metres between two points on Canadian soil passing over the churning waters of the whirlpool almost 80 metres below. 

You actually cross into the US while in the air but you don’t need any ID or clearance for this since you go from Canada to Canada! We stopped while driving along the Parkway but ran out of time to do the Aero Car.

Niagara Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours

Address of Floral Clock Pick-up: 14004 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 6K2, Canada

It’s one thing to look at the Niagara River from above – it’s another thing to ride  on it.  With the Niagara Whirlpool Jet Boat tour , that’s exactly what you can expect!

Choosing either a wet tour (and you WILL get wet) or a dry dome boat, these hour-long guided tours of the Niagara River are definitely something to be experienced. Oh, and you reach speeds of almost 100 km/hr!

The jet boat actually leaves from three locations, with the main dock in the small town of Queenston (north of downtown Niagara Falls) being the most central.

If you are going on the jet boat, you can make your way using the WEGO shuttle to the Floral Clock and then get a  free shuttle  to the boat from there (shown above). Of course, you can also just go right to the dock but it’s not as straightforward if you don’t have a rental car .

The jet boats then take you up the river, passing through the Niagara Gorge and many historical points along the way. You pass through the Whirlpool and other sets of white water rapids, too!

Of course, the staff walk you through all the safety procedures beforehand. Oh, and if you ride on an open-top boat, be sure to bring a full change of clothes! If you’re keen for some adventure, you can book your spot on the whirlpool jet boat tour here .

Whirlpool Golf Course

Address: 3351 Niagara River Pkwy, Niagara Falls, ON L0S 1J0 (close to the Nature Glen Centre)

If golfing is your thing, then you don’t have to stop your game when you’re in Niagara Falls. North of downtown Niagara – located right beside the famous Niagara River Whirlpool – is the  Whirlpool Golf Course .

This top-rated public course is on a piece of pristine Ontario land just off of the Niagara Parkway. This means that players have easy parking and easy access to playing a round.

The course also has a beautiful clubhouse for having a bite to eat at the restaurant or a drink afterward.

Floral Clock

Address: 14004 Niagara Pkwy, Queenston, ON L0S 1L0, Canada

The Floral Clock is one of those things that you don’t really think of as significant until you realize the size of it and the effort that goes into creating it!

Located north of the Botanical Gardens (close to Queenston Heights Park below), the Floral Clock is a monument that actually functions as a working clock. 

The clock’s face is covered in around 16,000 small flowers (known as carpet bedding plants) and creates a colourful design.

The clock mechanisms are run by Ontario Hydro – who also runs the massive hydro dam nearby. The clock chimes every 15 minutes and the back door to the clock might be open for you to see the clock mechanisms and old photos from previous clocks!

This location (as we mentioned above) is also the meeting point for the Whirlpool Jet Boat shuttle. There’s loads of parking and we even saw people having picnics since there’s a green space and tables here, too.

If nothing else, it’s a nice stop for some quiet time away from downtown Niagara Falls – or check it out on the way up to Niagara on the Lake!

Queenston Heights Park

Address: 144 Niagara Pkwy, Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON L0S 1J0, Canada

Another great place to check out is Queenston Heights Park .

Located just a minute or two north of the Floral Clock (and thus far from downtown Niagara Falls), this massive green space is loaded with things to check out. The entrance is around a roundabout – something you don’t see too often in Ontario!

We had a stop-in and had a walkabout. Notably, the park is the home of two monuments: the Brock Monument and Laura Secord Monument.

We actually walk to the base of Brock Monument and had a look out over the Niagara on the Lake region and the river. The park’s location high on the Niagara Escarpment means that you get really, really great views.

There’s also loads of space for a nice picnic in the park as well as a beautiful old-looking dining experience at Queenston Heights Restaurant.

We found lots of space for parking and there are even washrooms on site should you be wondering.

Take a Niagara on the Lake Wine Tour

If you want to get away from downtown Niagara Falls for a half-day, consider a trip up to Niagara on the Lake (the town) and do a wine tour around the region. We actually did a half-day winery tour experience  and had a blast trying wine while being driven around.

Exploring wineries like Ravine, Inniskillin, and Reif Estates and more was well worth it! The best part is that this premier wine region is only 20 minutes north of Niagara Falls! We also wrote a whole post on our Niagara on the Lake winery experience here !

Things to Consider When Visiting Niagara Falls

If you’re planning a visit to Niagara Falls, there are a few things you should know about the layout of the area, the waterfalls, and the borders.

From getting around to determining when you should visit and where to stay, here’s some information to help you plan the perfect trip!

General Information About Niagara Falls

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the area, Niagara Falls is a city in Ontario, Canada. Across the border/river, there is also a Niagara Falls, New York in the US – just to make things confusing.

The grouping of waterfalls at that point is ALSO called Niagara Falls – and there are  three waterfalls  (Canadian Falls “Horseshoe Falls”, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls).

Niagara Falls, Ontario is part of the greater Niagara Region which also includes an area to the south of Lake Ontario called Niagara on the Lake.

This region is special due to its climate and geography – thus making it a top wine-growing region in Canada – and known globally, as well. If you’re into wine, check out some of our favourite Niagara on the Lake wineries .

Back to Niagara Falls, you can cross the border into the US (on Rainbow Bridge) to see their side of the river but you will need a passport or form of formal ID. Also, while you are in Niagara Falls, Canada, you should expect to use Canadian money.

Cards are also widely accepted. However, given the proximity to the US border, many retail places in Niagara Falls, Canada will accept US Dollars – but don’t bank on that as a hard rule (pun intended).

Best Time to Visit Niagara Falls

As for the best time to visit Niagara Falls – it really depends on what you expect to do and see. The summer months in Ontario are hot and humid making them prime tourist season.

Niagara Falls is VERY BUSY from Mid-June to the end of August. Depending on how hot September is, it might still be busy then, too. 

If you want the warmer weather, we’d suggest going in May/June or September/October. These are known as the shoulder seasons that avoid the middle of summer and dead of winter.

That said, we have never been but have heard (and seen photos) that Niagara Falls is beautiful in the wintertime . The ice forms from the mist of the Falls and it makes for great photos. 

Niagara Falls also does a big New Years Bash with fireworks which is pretty popular. The point is: Niagara Falls doesn’t shut down in the wintertime since there are many indoor activities and most of the outdoor ones don’t even close down!

Getting Around Niagara Falls

If you’re staying in downtown Niagara Falls, you will be able to walk basically everywhere. This is where many of the top attractions are located – and we focus on these in this post.

That said, there are some attractions that require renting a car or taking a bus to get to (we cover these attractions further down in the post).

If you do have a car and are driving in for the day or want to park near the Falls, there are lots of parking lots very close to Horseshoe Falls. It won’t be cheap – but it’ll be convenient!

If you are without a car, Niagara Falls has a bus transit system that you can certainly use – but they also have an amazing tourist-specific bus system called the WEGO . 

WEGO runs three coloured lines with routes that cover: all over downtown to top attractions, along the river north to more attractions (the Floral Clock), along Lundy’s Lane (a historic and popular district to visit), and even an extension shuttle service from April to October into Niagara on the Lake (where the wine country is).

The three lines meet around the Table Rock Visitor Centre at Horseshoe Falls. You can learn more about the routes and prices here . Don’t forget about Niagara Falls taxis if you want a quick way to get across town to an attraction but don’t have a car on hand.

Just so you know, there’s also an Incline Railway that goes from the Fallsview downtown area to close to Horseshoe Falls behind the Table Rock Welcome Centre.

The walk from downtown to the walkway beside the Falls is actually quite hilly so this is useful for those with mobility impairments, lots of kids, elderly guests, or just tired legs from all the exploring! You can learn more about the Incline Railway here .

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

We’ve actually written a whole guide on great hotels and accommodations in Niagara Falls . That said, we’ll cover the basics here in case you are looking for a place to stay in Niagara Falls.

Basically, there are a TON of hotels, a handful of motels, and quite a few bed and breakfasts. Many people stay in or near downtown so that they are close to top attractions – and many choose to stay in a hotel where they can see the waterfalls. 

If you know you want a hotel in Niagara Falls, you can  check here for hotels in Niagara Falls . If you want to stay in an accommodation where you are very close to Clifton Hill attractions and see the  American Falls from your hotel , these are amazing hotel options on the Canadian side:

• Sheraton on the Falls  – shown in the above photos. Doesn’t get more central than this!
• Quality Hotel Fallsview Cascade  – a budget hotel located downtown where you can see the Falls from some rooms!

If you are looking for a hotel that overlooks the Canadian Falls (also known as Horseshoe Falls) , then check out the following “Fallsview” hotels:

• Embassy Suites by Hilton  – (shown in the photo above) – all suite-style rooms
• Tower Hotel at Fallsview  – (shown in the photo above) – the round tower-looking hotel!
• Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa  – (shown in the photo above) – has spa facilities
• Radisson Hotel & Suites Fallsview  – (not shown above) but had some great “Fallsview” rooms
• Marriott on the Falls  – (shown in the photo above) –  a simple hotel with amazing views

If you want a more cozy stay, there are plenty of great bread and breakfasts scattered around the quieter neighbourhoods and along the Niagara River/Gorge.

These are generally more historic houses that have a lot of character and friendly hosts who whip together a mean breakfast! You can  check here for bed and breakfasts in Niagara Falls . 

We stayed in  A Moment in Time B&B  when we visited Niagara Falls.

We loved our stay: the hosts were friendly, the large bed was comfortable, the breakfast was filling and fresh, and the property was only 15 minutes to downtown walking (which we enjoyed). We’d recommend staying here for sure!

What to wear in Niagara Falls

Are you wondering what to wear in Niagara Falls? Then you have come to the right place. Niagara Falls is certainly a stunning place no matter when you visit but it can be challenging to pack for Niagara Falls due to the climate and activities you will be doing. In this guide we tell you EXACTLY what to pack for Niagara falls no matter when you visit.

Where is Niagara Falls?

Niagara Falls is located right on the border between New York state and Ontario, Canada. As such you can visit Niagara Falls from both the American and Canadian side.

The main section you visit from New York is the aptly named American Falls while Canada has the Horseshoe Falls. Both are amazing and you will have an amazing time whereever you are visiting.

And as the Falls is all that separates the two countries, what you wear to Niagara Falls will be the same on both sides of the border.

What to wear in Niagara Falls?

As Niagara Falls is located in Northern North America, you can expect to experience all four seasons here, sometimes even in a day.

Therefore what you need to pack for Niagara Falls will depend on when you are going. First we will give you an overview of what should be on your Niagara Falls packing list no matter when you visit before turning our attention to season specific items.

T Shirts are a great base for Niagara Falls no matter the season. For Winter you will need tees with long sleeves to use as a base layer however short sleeve tees are perfectly acceptable at all other times of year.

A Hoodie is a great pick for Niagara Falls no matter the season you visit. Niagara Falls is a relatively casual place no matter when you visit so you don’t need to worry about smart top layers for the falls themselves.

And even in Summer it can get chilly at the falls early in the morning and in the evening. Therefore you will need a casual top layer. Shop hoodies here .

If hoodies aren’t your thing then fleeces also make great top layers. I actually prefer fleeces because they tend to be thinner to pack which can help prevent overpacking but are insulating.

Also if fleeces get wet they tend to be much quicker to dry than other types of layers. Click here to shop fleeces for Niagara Falls.

Waterproof Top Layer

There is no escaping the fact that you will get wet at Niagara Falls no matter when you visit. You have to contend with the spray from the falls, mist which dampens clothes quickly and of course rain. Therefore you will absolutely need a waterproof top layer.

For shoulder seasons and summer something like above is fine if layered correctly but in Winter something thicker will be needed.

Note: on hikes such as those at Terrapin Point And Niagara River Parkway you can get notoriously damp due to the likely misty conditions so be sure to always have this waterproof top layer with you in your day pack.

Rain Poncho

But if you are worried about the effectiveness of your waterproof top layer, want something longer or just want more added protection which will be needed for boats at Niagara then a rain poncho is an absolute essential.

Of course these can be purchased locally but they are often cheaper to purchase online in advance.

However some of the attractions such as the boat rides will provide these complimentary too!

Comfy Trousers

I don’t recommend denim or jeans for near the falls as these are uncomfortable when damp or wet. Both of which are likely sceanrios at the Falls.

Instead I recommend things like athleisure like leggings, quick dry shorts and waterproof walking trousers for visiting the Falls.

Dress for evenings

I don’t recommend dresses for near the Falls, hiking or on the Niagara Falls tourist boats. However a dress for the nightlife around Niagara Falls or at one of the nearby vineyards is a good idea.

So now you know what should make the base of your packing list for Niagara Falls no matter the time of year we will turn our attention to the seasonal specific items to take with you.

What to wear to Niagara Falls in Winter (December, January and February)

Winter at Niagara Falls is classified as December, January and February. However November can also sometime require a Winter capsule wardrobe too!

Niagara Falls in Winter can get EXTREMELY cold. In fact the temperature range for these months tends to be around 20°F/ -6°C to 30°F/-1 °C.

In fact if you visit Niagara Falls in Winter you are likely to see a beautiful winter wonderland complete with snow and the Falls can even get frozen sometimes too!

Therefore if you want to know what to pack for Niagara Falls in Winter, the answer has to be layers and lots of them.

Alongside your regular Niagara Falls packing list we also recommend packing:

Thick Winter Jacket / Coat

Given the below freezing temperatures having a thick insulated winter coat / jacket is an absolute essential for visiting in Winter.

In fact a winter coat / winter jacket is absolutely my number one pick for any Niagara Falls Winter packing list no matter your itinerary. And the coat you pack should be very practical for very cold weather. This means a coat with plenty of insulation as well as waterproofing and wind resistance to deal with the winter weather.

Hat, Scarf and Gloves

Winter accessories are a must for Niagara Falls in Winter.

I would recommend taking with you a matching scarf and gloves set that match your winter coat to finish off the look. But be sure to get gloves that are touch screen compatible so as you are likely to be taking lots of photographs of the Falls which are at the most stunning in Winter.

You may also want ski gloves with another pair of gloves that are touch screen compatible underneath to cope with the extreme cold temperatures.

On top of these you may also want ear muffs to protect all your extremities.

For visiting the Falls themselves we recommend taking either walking trousers, ski trousers or some thicker lined leggings for spending time outside.

I personally would avoid jeans at the Falls as these are uncomfortable when they get wet / damp. Hpwever they are a great pick for in the nearby Falls towns / hotels.

A thermal base layer is absolutely essential for the Falls in Winter. You will get very cold when at the Falls overlooks and on the boats that take you close to the falls so having a warm base layer is an absolute essential.

Layers are absolutely essential for Nigara Falls in Winter. I would pack a mix of sweaters, hoodies and fleeces.

Hoodies are a great casual top layer for sightseeing in the day but I like a smarter sweater for evenings. I personally never travel in Winter without a merino wool sweater.

Merino wool is one of my favorite fabrics to include in a  Winter capsule wardrobe . That is because it provides extra warmth as they are an insulating fabric but is also compact unlike a thick knit. Therefore it is easy to pack and doesn’t take up a lot of space in your case.

And fleeces are useful for at the Falls if you are worried about getting wet through rain, spray or even just the mist that covers the falls in Winter as they are quick to dry and are a thin but very insulating layer.

For those traveling to Hokkaido in Winter we recommend packing thicker, flannel pjs.

Underwear and Socks

Goes without saying. The best socks for Niagara Falls in Winter have to be either hiking socks or merino wool socks that are insulating.

Also if you plan on packing any dresses we recommend having thick tights or  fleece lined leggings  to go underneath them

What to wear to Niagara Falls in Summer (June, July and August)

Summer is a great time to visit Niagara Falls as you get the best weather. The temperatures in Summer at Niagara Falls tend to reach highs of 70°F to 80°F  or 21 to 27° C which is pretty pleasant for sightseeing in.

For this time of year you can get away with the basic Niagara Falls packing list but you may want to add some tank tops and short sleeve t shirts for your base layer.

But don’t be tempted to leave the waterproof top layer and waterproof shoes at home as these are needed 365 days a year.

What to wear to Niagara Falls in Fall (September, October and November)

Fall is a beautiful time to visit Niagara Falls because you will get to see the Fall foliage and Fall colors which are spectacular here.

The temperatures in Fall tend to range from mid-50s to the mid-70s °F (12 to 23 °C) which obviously is a big range. Therefore it is recommended you check the weather 7 days before travel to ensure you list is appropriate.

But overall the best way to pack a successful Fall capsule wardrobe for Niagara falls is to have plenty of light layers with you that you can add and remove to cope with the changeable weather.

What to wear in Niagara Falls in Spring (March, April and May)

Spring at Niagara Falls is still pretty chilly with temperatures ranging from mid-40°Fs and mid-60°Fs °F aka 7 and 18° C. 

So again the key to packing for this time of year is lots of layers. Spring is also one of the wettest times of year so you may also want an umbrella for town as well as your normal waterproof packing list for Niagara Falls.

Best Shoes for Niagara Falls

Shoes are a very important part of any packing list but even more so for Niagara Falls. There are two important factors for shoes for Niagara Falls:

• waterproof shoes – you are likely to get wet at Niagara Falls no matter when you are traveling and
• comfortable walking shoes – there are some amazing trailheads at Niagara Falls and lots of walking to be done to get to amazing viewpoints. Therefore you need comfortable walking shoes.

The shoes I recommend taking to Niagara Falls are:

Sneakers have to be the most comfortable shoe for walking anywhere. My favorite brand of sneakers for walking are are  Hoka  and  AllBirds  as these are great for walking in. However you also can’t go wrong with a plain white sneaker as they go with everything fashion wise. One of my favorite pairs of white sneakers is the  Adidas Cloud Foam shoes.

The problem is none of these are waterproof. Instead Ecco is a great brand that has waterproof sneakers. However your other option is to pack watershoes or flip flops etc to change into for very wet areas.

These are useful for very wet / damp places i.e. on the Maid of the mist or any of the Niagara Falls boat trips.

They are also great for Cave of the Winds though they are sometimes provided.

Snow Boots (Winter only)

For Winter in Niagara Fall waterproof snow boots are a great choice.

These are usually fur or fleece lined for extra warmth, are waterproof and have good rubber soles for extra traction on the ice.

My favorite brands for snow boots are Columbia.

Waterproof Backpack

A well packed day bag is an essential for Niagara Falls but given the activities you will be doing we recommend a back pack with a waterproof cover.

Quick Dry Towel

There is no escaping the fact you will get wet at Niagara Falls. For drying off we recommend bringing a towel with you. Just be sure it is a quick dry one so it doesn’t stay damp in your pack. Shop quick dry towels here.

Again, you will get wet. Protect your electronics by keeping them in waterproof phone protectors.

Niagara Falls is beautiful no matter when you travel and your camera will always be out. However if you are on maid of the mist or other boats your camera is going to get wet. The maid of the mist boat or any boat tour near Niagara Falls is an absolute bucket list item to be added to your itinerary.

But what should you wear? We recommend plenty of light layers as appropriate for the weather alongside a waterproof top layer (ponchos are usually supplied) as well as waterproof shoes.

What not to wear at Niagara Falls?

So now you know what to wear at Niagara Falls, what shouldn’t you wear. On our list our:

• High heels or shoes with no grip – these are no good for the conditions around the fall and are quite frankly dangerous.
• Non waterproof clothes – you will get wet or damp whenever you visit Niagara so don’t travel with non waterproof clothes for your top layer.

Well I don't think it will be -too- cold, it's usually fairly warm in the day time (especially with all the walking). It might get a bit chilly at night time & it's definately chilly at night by the falls (it's usually cold down by any body of water.. even some days in July I've gone down there @ night & got a chill), but I don't know how rainy it'll be... it's springtime though! :)

April is a very nice time of year to visit NF though. It's warm enough not to freeze, it's off season enough to get good deals on hotels & not have to deal with the large crowds you'll run into come May-August, and the trees & flowers and in bloom. It's beautiful here :)

P.S. Right now it's warmer in Toronto than in Boston.

I actually love the falls area in winter- its the only time we go. Sorry about the Canadian stereotypes that people have- the Niagara area is similar weather wise to cities all over the US. Just look at a map -the Niagara peninsula is further south than New England is

Niagara Falls in Winter: The Ultimate Guide (2024)

Niagara Falls in winter is one of the best times to visit because you’ll be able to see a partially frozen Niagara Falls. It’s quite the sight to behold in the winter months, surrounded by snow and ice! There’s really nothing like it anywhere else in the world. While I love going to Niagara Falls in the fall , the winter is one of my favourite times of the year to visit.

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada is home to one of the world’s greatest waterfalls. It is one of the most visited places in the world. People flock here to witness its majestic beauty by the millions. An estimated 22 million people visit Niagara Falls each year (including both the Canadian and American sides).

As you can imagine, it can get very busy here, especially during the summer months. It’s incredible to visit Niagara Falls in the fall with less crowds. However, it’s such a unique experience to see Niagara blanketed with a layer of snow and ice. To escape the crowds and view Niagara Falls in a whole new light, why not consider visiting Niagara Falls in winter?

As Justin and I live about an hour’s drive from the Niagara region , we hardly consider visiting in the summertime. We’ve both been fortunate enough to visit the Falls on numerous occasions during the warm summer seasons with our families throughout the years.

While it’s spectacular in the summer, Niagara Falls is brilliant in all seasons. Thankfully, the off seasons are a little less hectic, especially during the winter. Is it cold? Yes, pack your parka . Is it worth braving the cold to visit? Of course! Niagara Falls is a spectacular dazzler in the winter.

Niagara Falls Winter: Seeing Niagara Falls Frozen

One of the main reasons to visit Niagara Falls in winter? You want to see Niagara Falls frozen! Frozen waterfalls are absolutely stunning and offer entirely different scenery in comparison to what they look like during the other seasons. Sections of the waterfall become frozen over. The chilling mist rises up above the Falls and surrounds you at times.

Layers of ice and snow bury the rushing water down below. Only small sections of the Niagara River are visible; you can still observe just how fast the water is flowing. Dense clumps of snow and ice cover the protective fences and barriers, feeling as hard as the concrete beneath them.

Trees and plants are completely frozen and cling to the rocky cliff edges. Seeing Niagara Falls in winter is nothing like visiting in the spring, summer, or fall.

Does Niagara Falls Ever Completely Freeze Over?

Don’t visit Niagara Falls in winter expecting to see the waterfall completely frozen. It gets pretty icy, but it doesn’t completely freeze over. According to Niagara Parks’ official records, the last time it froze over was in 1848 during extremely chilly temperatures and an accumulation of ice glaciers.

It completely stopped the flow of water, so Niagara Falls did freeze over. It hasn’t happened since, and don’t expect it to happen again anytime soon!

When to Visit Niagara Falls in Winter

When is the best time to visit Niagara Falls in winter? If you want to see Niagara Falls frozen or partially frozen, make your way there after it’s been freezing cold for a while. After many days of frigid and freezing weather, Niagara Falls will begin to grow more frozen and icy.

I’ve heard that when it gets really cold that you’ll see huge chunks of ice floating over the waterfall itself. That is beyond cool!  See what I did there!

Niagara Falls in February

I’ve updated this article as we went to see Niagara Falls in February after experiencing a lot of freezing weather. As always, it was absolutely gorgeous. Niagara never disappoints. The American Falls were mostly frozen over, and the Horseshoe Falls was frozen down below.

Clumps of snow and ice were everywhere and covering every surface: barriers, trees, plants, you name it. The water is powerful, as always, no matter the season. Visiting Niagara Falls in February is probably the best time of year to go if you want to see the falls under layers of snow and ice.

Niagara Falls in January

We’ve also visited Niagara Falls in January. One year in particular, we ventured down to see a winter Niagara Falls to witness the magic. We reached Niagara Falls in the afternoon, which is typically the busiest point of the day in the summer. Depending on how cold it gets, Niagara Falls can be pretty icy and magical in January, too.

However, there weren’t any crowds of people to battle for a prime viewing spot. Visiting Niagara Falls in winter is way less crowded, cheaper if you’re going to spend the night, and it’s far easier to find a parking spot in any parking lot (and far cheaper!).

As we walked down to the path that runs along the edge of Niagara Falls, we saw only a few people here and there. It was always easy to view Niagara Falls in winter from any location as we never had to wait for someone to move out of the way.

Niagara Falls in December

If you are looking to travel to Niagara Falls in the winter, it’s always a tossup as to whether or not there will be snow and ice in December. There are years where we’ll receive a dumping of snow in November and it lasts straight through the winter season. On other occasions, we don’t get much snow until January.

Visiting Niagara Falls in December can be really fun for the holiday and Christmas festivals. I’ll go into more detail about the OPG Winter Festival of Lights and Niagara Falls Christmas Market under the “festivals” heading of this blog post.

What to Wear in the Winter

Dress for the season, and that means dress warmly. And even more warmly than you think. The mist from the Falls makes it even colder. Definitely pack a warm winter coat , scarf , hat , and mittens/gloves . Layers are your friend.

During your walk along the Falls, you can always take a break and hop inside one of the shopping areas. That’s what we did when we got a little too cold. There are opportunities to get Tim Hortons coffee should you desire a hot beverage. After you’re finished gazing at the stunning waterfall from several places along the path, you might want to get back indoors for a while.

What to Do in Niagara Falls in Winter

Other than seeing the Falls themselves, you might be wondering what else you can do. Thankfully, Niagara Falls is always exciting and alive. There are always plenty of things to do in Niagara Falls in winter.

While some of the main Niagara Falls attractions close down in winter (Niagara City Cruises, White Water Walk, Hornblower Cruises aka Maid of the Mist and the Whirlpool Aero Car are all closed), there are so many attractions that remain open in all seasons.

Journey Behind the Falls

Journey Behind the Falls, a Niagara Parks attraction, remains open all year long. You’ll have an alternate perspective of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls on this adventure. Take a self-guided walking tour through 130 year old tunnels to experience the power of Niagara. 

There are multiple cave entrances where you can see Niagara Falls plummeting down right before your eyes. The best part of Journey Behind the Falls is the observation deck at the end of the tunnel system. Standing right beside Niagara Falls is an experience like no other.

While I’ve only visited this attraction in the summer and fall before, I am certain that standing beside Niagara Falls in the winter would be absolutely incredible.

Niagara Parks Power Station

The  Niagara Parks Power Station  is the newest attraction in the city, and you can enjoy different experiences by day and night. It’s open all year long, so you can even visit in the winter. Located on the Niagara Parkway, this Romanesque style architectural masterpiece is truly a sight to behold.

It was the first major power plant on the Canadian side of the Falls, and it opened in 1905. It’s also the longest operating power plant on the Niagara River, open from 1905 to 2006. Nowadays, you can visit this restored landmark attraction with immersive exhibits, unique artifacts, and lots of stories.

Learn about the inner workings of one of the most amazing power plants that harnessed the energy of the Horseshoe Falls and turned it into electricity. You can even experience an interactive control panel where you’ll learn how to harness electricity from water power for yourself. It’s one of the best indoor attractions to escape the cold weather.

The Tunnel at the Niagara Power Station

Want to see Niagara Falls in a way you’ve never experienced before, even if you travel to Niagara Falls regularly? The Tunnel at the Niagara Parks Power Station is a long awaited attraction that’s open at last.

Descend 180 feet below the Niagara Parks Power Station to experience the 2200 foot long tunnel and a new underground perspective of the Falls. And it’s open all year round!

Learn about the history of hydroelectricity in Niagara, plus enjoy never before seen views of Niagara Falls from the viewing platform at the end of the tunnel. Get your tickets to the  Tower and Tailrace Tunnel Tour  for two fun attractions in one.

Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory

A trip to the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory is a great way to warm up on a cold winter day. It’s a tropical climate inside, and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful, colorful butterflies fluttering all around.

Take a wander around this gorgeous indoor garden full of lush greenery everywhere you look. Take photos of various species of butterflies as they land on plants or maybe even on you if you’re lucky (it’s good luck to have a butterfly land on you!).

Fallsview Casino

Another fun indoor activity in Niagara Falls in winter is Fallsview Casino . Why not try your luck at the slots of the tables? While Justin and I aren’t frequent casino goers, we will go maybe once or twice a year for a couple of hours (until we lose our money!).

While the slot machines are always tempting, Justin and I really like the electronic roulette machines that are situated around an actual roulette wheel.

In the lobby of the casino, there’s this funky looking fountain that lights up all different colors. Many people were taking their photos in front of it, and we followed suit.

Margaritaville Niagara Falls

After you’re done spending your hard-earned dollars at the casino, why not pretend that you’re at a tropical destination? We walked across the street to Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Niagara Falls for some drinks. I know that you might not want to think about drinking a frosty margarita on a cold day, but we were actually a bit thirsty after being indoors at the casino.

We went with our friend, Shannon, and we both got the same drink, the “Tropical Hurricane”. Wow, this drink was much stronger than I expected! It was still very fruity and tasty. Funny enough, this was my first time ever frequenting a Margaritaville, despite visiting numerous Caribbean islands.

While the bar wasn’t really busy, we still had a great time chatting among the four of us. Oh, and don’t worry, you’ll get to hear the Margaritaville song….several times. Searching for my lost shaker of salt…

Skylon Tower

The Skylon Tower is open for business if you’d like to get an aerial view of Niagara Falls. It’s a revolving restaurant with non-stop gorgeous views out the window.

It isn’t cheap dining up there, but it’s all about the experience. You get admission to the observation deck included with your meal, as well as the fun glass elevator ride.

Clifton Hill

A trip to Niagara Falls isn’t complete without walking up and down Clifton Hill. There are so many amusements and attractions along Clifton Hill, like wax museums, arcades, and indoor mini golf. While some of the attractions are a little cheesy or tacky, it’s oddly charming. 

The Niagara SkyWheel is open all year long and you won’t have to wait in any huge lineups. I recommend riding the Niagara SkyWheel at night when the Falls are all lit up.

For craft beer fans, check out Niagara Brewing Company on Clifton Hill. They have award winning beers, as well as local specialties, such as the ice wine beer. Open to the public since 2015, they’re serving up quality brews right in the heart of Niagara Falls, so be sure to stop by for a tasting or a pint.

Go Hiking in the Niagara Falls Area

Why not escape the city and go for a winter hike in Niagara Falls? Just bring some winter hiking boots , bundle up, and hit the trails. You can go winter hiking at Niagara Glen , which is a super scenic spot near Niagara Falls. The Niagara Gorge is gorgeous in all seasons, and it’s truly a winter wonderland this time of year.

I also recommend exploring the Bruce Trail , which runs for 900km between Niagara and Tobermory , Ontario. You can start at Queenston Heights Park at the Southern Terminus Cairn . It’s the stone monument that signifies the very start of the Bruce Trail, and it’s right there in Niagara Falls.

There are also Christmas lights for the season, light displays in Canadian themes, and even the Falls themselves are illuminated. You can catch the Winter Festival of Lights at Queen Victoria Park. The Niagara Parks Floral Showhouse is bright and all lit up for the season, too.

This year, the OPG Winter Festival of Lights runs from November 12th, 2022 to February 20th, 2023. It runs for 101 nights in total, from the middle of November until the Family Day weekend. Niagara Falls Christmas Market

The  Niagara Falls   Christmas Market  is located in downtown Niagara Falls, Ontario. It’s the largest Christmas market in the Niagara region. You’ll find 50 vendors specializing in handmade goods. They operate out of the traditional Christmas cabins we all love to see at Christmas markets in Canada.

There are also over 30 Christmas light displays, including interactive exhibits. The Niagara Santa Claus Parade kicks off the event in mid-November. Then, you can visit the market every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout the middle of November to December.

Niagara Holiday Handmade Market

Niagara Falls for Christmas or New Year’s Eve

Hi Lauren! Happy to find your blog and learn more about visiting in January 2024. Planning our 1 day to experience Niagara Falls (four adults) and wanted to run it by you. We are staying in Lundy's Lane area. Does it sound feasible to... Have late breakfast at Fallsview Restaurant; Walk a long the observation trail; Take the Journey Behind the Falls tour: Fallsview Casino and then dinner somewhere close. Anything you would suggest to make it better or add in? Not sure of the proximity/distance between of all these places and would love your insight!

Great post on visiting Niagara Falls in the winter.

We were lucky enough to visit Toronto for our 5th wedding anniversary a couple of years ago. This is in March so inevitable the Falls were frozen for our visit but we were so glad they were. The sun was the sky and the blue of the frozen water was so stunning. There was also no-one else around to get in the way of our photos!! Can't imagine visiting in the summer now.

The nearby town of Niagara on the Lake is also a stunning place to visit!

Canada’s Niagara region declares state of emergency as it prepares for a million eclipse tourists

Ontario’s Niagara Region has declared a state of emergency as it prepares to welcome up to a million visitors for the solar eclipse in early April.

The  total solar eclipse  on April 8 will be the first to touch the province since 1979, and Niagara Falls was declared by National Geographic to be one of the best places to see it.

The city is in the path of totality, where the moon will entirely block the sun’s rays for a few minutes. Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati said earlier in March that he expects the most visitors his city has ever seen in a single day.

The regional municipality of Niagara is proactively invoking a state of emergency to prepare for the event. The declaration announced Thursday sets in motion some additional planning tools to prepare for the day, which could involve major traffic jams, heavier demands on emergency services and cell phone network overloads.

The  eclipse will reach Mexico’s Pacific coast  in the morning, cut diagonally across the United States from Texas to Maine, and exit in eastern Canada by late afternoon. Most of the rest of the continent will see a partial eclipse.

A total eclipse of a lifetime appeared for hundreds of thousands of visitors and residents in the Hamilton-Niagara region — a prime viewing area in Canada — as part of the celestial spectacle in North America. 

The moon began moving between the Earth and sun at around 2 p.m. ET, creating a partial solar eclipse. Around 3:18 p.m., the moon fully blocked the sun and a total solar eclipse was visible. 

Crowds watched from parks and stadiums across Hamilton and by Niagara Falls as the clouds briefly parted, showing the eclipse. 

People watching from Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton gasped and cheered as the temperature dropped and skies darkened. They briefly removed their glasses when totality hit to glance up at the moon haloed by the sun.

At Hamilton's Bayfront Park, 11-year-old Charlize Canido watched the total solar eclipse with her family. 

She said it was "awesome" and described it as "the moon and then fire coming out." 

She was among thousands sitting in the grass by the water, gathering at a nearby lookout and flooding the north end of the city after getting off GO trains nearby earlier in the day.

Charlize said she was thinking about how "you're not going to be able to see it again ... it was a 10 out of 10."

In Niagara Falls, American visitors Seth Smoak and Ben Lovewell were among the crowds ready to mark the eclipse by the falls — in their case, with a life-changing question.

"It's a very special occasion in a very special place and I'm hoping a very special someone is going to ask me a very special question," said Lovewell, smiling at Smoak. 

"I'm here to propose," Smoak revealed, showing off the ring he'd chosen — while Lovewell closed his eyes to save the surprise.

"I'm a little nervous to live up to his expectations, but I think I can do it," Smoak said. 

The big question leading up to the eclipse was whether the clouds would break in time. 

Michelle Millen, 36, kept an eye on the sky as she, her two kids, husband, parents and grandparents watch from their Fonthill, Ont., farm in the Niagara Region. She hoped it would clear up at the right moment.

But even if the total eclipse wouldn't be completely visible, the celestial event felt "magical," she said.

What made this eclipse special?

Parts of the continent witnessed a partial solar eclipse, as the moon moves between the Earth and sun, blocking the star's light.

If you were in the narrower path of totality, the moon fully blocked the sun, known as a total eclipse, when there was a change in temperature during a period of night-like darkness.  

The Hamilton-Niagara area was within this path, which made it a desirable destination  for spectators.

A  number of events were planned in the area , with Hamilton designating eclipse-viewing areas where people could gather safely. 

Around 1 p.m., people were lined up down the block to get into McMaster University's Ron Joyce Stadium for a viewing party hosted by the university and its planetarium.

Eclipses happen relatively frequently, but total solar eclipses might only be visible in a region once every several decades and sometimes more than 100 years. In Hamilton, the last total eclipse was in 1925 and the next one won't be until 2144. 

Some people travel great distances to see eclipses . Niagara Falls welcomed  up to one million visitors  and the region declared a state of emergency to prepare. Hamilton was expected to see about 100,000 visitors. 

Handling road traffic 

Niagara police advised of road closures in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie, Ont., to accommodate the expected crowds beginning at 11 a.m. Monday.

They also warned about congestion on roads and highways as visitors arrive and depart from the region.

To avoid traffic jams, police said, drivers in minor collisions were urged to move to the shoulder before exchanging insurance information. 

They also didn't need to call police if the damage is minimal and can report it after, at a collision reporting centre. 

For everyone in the region, travel will become "increasingly difficult," Niagara police said ahead of the eclipse. They encouraged people to prepare by filling up with gas and getting groceries in advance.

A total solar eclipse will cross the US on April 8. Here's what time Australians can watch the solar eclipse live stream

A rare total solar eclipse will sweep across the Pacific Ocean, through Mexico, the United States and Canada on April 8 (North American time).

The phenomenon occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun.

Unfortunately, eclipse chasers in Australia won't be able to see the sky darken. However, NASA will live-stream the event for those outside the US.

Here are a few things to know about the North American eclipse, including why one Canadian city has declared a state of emergency in the lead-up to the celestial event.

What happens during a total solar eclipse?

Total eclipses happen when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun , casting a shadow on Earth.

This is called the path of totality.

The sky darkens as if it were dusk or dawn, and nocturnal animals are known to wake up, believing night has arrived.

There are several stages in a total solar eclipse:

1. Partial eclipse begins:  The Moon starts to become visible over the Sun's disc. It looks like the Moon has taken a bite out of the Sun, hence the crescent shape. This phase generally lasts 70 to 80 minutes. 2. Baily's beads and diamond ring: The Moon covers the entire disc of the Sun, and observers are now within the Moon's umbra, the darkest part of the Moon's shadow. A diamond ring effect is visible, as are Baily's beads (the effect occurs when light rays from the Sun stream through the valleys along the Moon's horizon). 3. Totality reached: The Moon completely covers the disc of the Sun. In places along the path of totality, people will be able to view the Sun's corona — the star's outer atmosphere — which is typically not visible because of solar brightness. 4. Totality ends: The Moon starts moving away and the Sun begins to reappear. The diamond ring and Baily's beads may be observed again. 5. Partial eclipse ends: The Moon completely leaves the face of the Sun. Source: NASA

Solar physicist and eclipse chaser Ryan Milligan says it's a very primal, visceral feeling to see the Sun disappear in the middle of the day.

"It's not something your brain is accustomed to processing," Dr Milligan told ABC News Mornings.

"It's that kind of adrenaline rush, to have this fleeting experience, when the temperature drops, perhaps a few stars come out, the animals go to sleep, you're looking around trying to soak in this experience that only lasts for a couple of minutes."

Are all solar eclipses the same?

No , they're all very different.

"The part of the Sun's atmosphere, the corona you see during totality, can look very different, depending on what phase of the solar cycle we're in," Dr Milligan said.

"That can dictate how the corona is structured, the clouds of hydrogen gas and so on.

"Whether it's a sunrise eclipse, sunset, midday eclipse, it can have a dramatic effect, and where you are can change the experience of totality."

Where will the total solar eclipse be visible?

The eclipse will cross through North America, passing over parts of Mexico, the US, and Canada .

Thirteen US states will be along the path of totality. These are:

• Pennsylvania
• New Hampshire

The eclipse will then enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.

What time does the solar eclipse start?

Unfortunately, we won't be able to see the total solar eclipse from Australia.

But luckily, NASA will be live-streaming the eclipse from beginning to end.

The live stream will begin at 1pm North American Eastern Daylight Time (so, 3am AEST on Tuesday for Aussie viewers) and will last 3 hours.

If you're eager to get up early and watch the live stream, here's when the eclipse will start depending on where you live:

• QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, and Tasmania: Eclipse begins at 3:23am, reaching totality at 4:40am AEST
• NT and SA: Eclipse begins at 2:53am, reaching totality at 4:10am ACST
• WA: Eclipse begins at 1:23am, reaching totality at 2:40am AWST

What is special about the 2024 US solar eclipse?

It will be wider than the total solar eclipse in August 2017.

According to NASA, during that eclipse the path of totality ranged from 100 kilometres to 114km wide.

But during this year's eclipse, it will range from 174km to 196km.

Dr Milligan said this year's eclipse would give a lot of people an opportunity to witness a rare celestial event.

"It goes over such a populated land mass, which makes it quite unique," he said.

"Last year, the path of totality just clipped the top of Australia, which is a very limited place on Earth where you could see the eclipse.

"So this year there is a huge difference in terms of viewing size."

And this year's total solar eclipse will also have a longer duration in totality  — meaning the Sun will appear to be blacked out for longer.

The 2017 total solar eclipse's longest blackout period was 2 minutes and 42 seconds.

But this year's will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Niagara Falls prepares for influx of eclipse tourists

Ahead of the total solar eclipse, Canada's Niagara region has declared a state of emergency as the city prepares for large crowds to descend on the area.

Because Niagara Falls is on the eclipse's path of totality, it's expected more than 1 million people will flock to the border city to observe the celestial event.

This is compared to the 14 million visitors who travel there during an entire year.

The region will be closing some facilities to keep traffic off the roads, with most schools also closed on April 8.

How often do total solar eclipses occur?

Total solar eclipses occur once every one to two years .

"But they are only visible from less than half a per cent of the Earth's surface," says American astrophysicist Fred Espanak.

The next total solar eclipse will grace the northern fringes of Greenland, Iceland, and Spain in 2026.

When was Australia's last total solar eclipse?

The last total solar eclipse in Australia was on April 20, 2023.

But the only place where the Sun was blocked out was in Exmouth, on the tip of the North West Cape in Western Australia.

The rest of the country only experienced a partial solar eclipse.

When is the next solar eclipse in Australia?

In four years.

Here's a timeline for those eager to experience a solar eclipse in person:

• July 22, 2028: Totality will cross from the Kimberley, WA, through NT, south-west Qld, NSW and pass directly over Sydney
• November 25, 2030: Across SA, north-west NSW and southern Qld
• July 13, 2037: Southern WA, southern NT, western Qld, passing directly over Brisbane and the Gold Coast
• December 26, 2038: Central WA, SA, and along the NSW and Victorian border
