How to change your Safari Homepage on Mac, iPhone and iPad

While you may not think much about what your Homepage is on Safari , this can be the handiest way to see your favorite site first. Every time you open Safari, you can visit the website you like most right off the bat or when you hit your Home button. Maybe it’s your preferred news source, the weather site you trust most, or your favorite tech site, iDownloadblog.com.

To make sure you get to your favorite website quickly each day, here’s how to change your Safari Homepage on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Safari Homepage on Mac

Change your Safari Homepage

Open Safari on your Mac, and then follow these steps to change your Homepage:

1) Click Safari > Preferences from the top menu bar.

2) Choose the General tab.

3) In the box next to Homepage , enter the URL of the website you want. If you are currently on that site, just click the Set Current Page button. This will change that URL for you.

Set Homepage Safari Mac

Set your Homepage for new windows and tabs

By making that change above, each time you click the Home button on your toolbar or History > Home from the menu bar, you’ll land on that page. But you can set it up so that whenever you open a new Safari window or tab, you’ll go directly to that page too.

In the same Safari Preferences window, above Homepage , you’ll see the options for New windows open with and New tabs open with . You can click the drop-down box and choose Homepage for both or just one.

Set Homepage New Window and Tabs Safari Mac

For something out of the ordinary, you can also set an image as your Safari Homepage on Mac. So, you can see your adorable pet, favorite vacation spot, or loving family whenever you open Safari.

On iPhone and iPad

Things are currently not as simple on iOS as they are on macOS. There isn’t a setting for Homepage in Safari on iPhone and iPad. But there is a workaround you can use to always open Safari with your favorite page. You’ll do this by creating a shortcut on your Home Screen, and here’s how.

1) Open Safari on iPhone or iPad and go to the site you want to use.

2) Tap the Share button at the bottom.

3) Select Add to Home Screen .

4) Name your shortcut and tap Add .

Now, whenever you want to open Safari to that “Homepage,” just tap your shortcut.

Add to Home Screen Safari Homepage iPhone

Note : If a website you use opens in a reader or mobile mode, you may not see your normal Safari options (tabs, bookmarks, etc.). So, use the desktop version of the site instead. Before performing the steps above, select the Share button > Request Desktop Site . Then, follow the instructions to add it to your Home Screen.

Setting Safari Homepage

You can always use the Favorites feature in Safari to quickly get to the sites you love most. But setting your Homepage gets you to your favorite website the fastest.

How to use the new Safari Start Page in macOS 11 Big Sur

William Gallagher's Avatar

If you're someone who likes Safari to start up with your own website already loaded, or your company's one, or a particular news site, you can carry right on. But if you're up for a change, or if you just never gave the start page a thought, the new improvements in macOS Big Sur are very appealing.

Let's not overplay this. What's really changed is that you can add a background, and that there are more options for what you see on that start page.

Yet don't underplay it, either. That start page can hold your most-used bookmarks, and it can take you quickly to your most-used sites. It can be where you go to catch up on articles you've saved, too.

And it can be where you go on your Mac to open that webpage you were reading on your iPad earlier.

How to customize Safari's start page

  • If Safari always opens to a particular site, go to Safari , Preferences , General
  • Click on the option New windows open with
  • Choose Start Page
  • Click on the option New tabs open with
  • Again, choose Start Page
  • Close the preferences window
  • Open a new Safari window
  • At bottom right, click on the Settings icon
  • Tick on or off sections you want on the page
  • Then scroll the page to see each section and over to the right of the title
  • Optionally, choose Show More or Show Less

This is all you need to do to make any changes to the page that Safari starts up with, or opens a new tab with. The Settings icon is what you'll use to include or exclude particular sections and the odds are that you may only do that occasionally.

Whereas you'll probably end up adjusting the Show More and Show Less options as you work, choosing today to expand or contract what's offered.

Change the background image

By default, if you have Safari open to its Start Page, that page will be on a plain background. You can change it to anything you like, though, by clicking that Settings icon at bottom right.

Click once to tick that feature as on, and then you'll see buttons for choosing an existing image, or adding a new one. When you've changed the image once, though, the first thing that ticking this feature on does is switch to that image.

Click on the Settings icon at bottom right to bring up your options

Apple's default options

Apple assumes that if you're using a Start Page, you want quick access to your Favorite sites. It's also going to track where you go so that it can show you all of your most Frequently Visited sites.

Favorites are shown as icons, but Frequently Visited sites get a thumbnail preview of their contents as they were the last time you went to them. By default, Safari will show you six of your most frequently visited sites, but if you over to the right of the title Frequently Visited, you get an option to show more.

If you choose that, Safari will now always show you a dozen frequently visited sites. If you don't want to see any at all, click on Settings and you can untick the whole section.

Reading List is also on by default and you may not have realised that you have this many pages in your list. At first, it will show you six, but clicking Show More expands that out to very many.

If you have an iPad, and you haven't switched off iCloud Tabs in the Start Page's settings, you'll see more websites. This time it's the web pages that are open on your iPad.

What Apple doesn't include

There is no point having a Start Page that gives you all your iPad's tabs, your entire reading list, a dozen frequently visited sites and 40-odd favourites. The point of a Start Page is to get you quick access to what you need.

So even Apple doesn't switch on every option. What it leaves off, though, is useful enough that you should still take a look at it.

Siri Suggestions is perhaps the most productive. It will offer you websites that you typically go to right about now.

Whereas Privacy Report is a one-line entry on the Start Page, which lets you click through for more detail.

Safari's Start Page can have a plain background and just a few Favorite sites listed

What we don't get from Apple

Microsoft Edge has a similar feature, but it lets you see news headlines. That would be a convenient use for the Start Page, no doubt, except if you wanted to see news, you could set the New York Times as your start page.

What would be more useful would be a way to re-order the elements on the Start Page. Perhaps you rarely bookmark favorite sites and never go to them anyway, but you do rely on the Reading List.

It would be good to be able to rearrange the sequence instead of solely being able to switch them on or off.

Similarly, it would be good to have more control over how information is displayed on the page. You can't change the frequently visited section's thumbnails to icons, for instance, nor can you show thumbnails instead of icons in the Favorites section.

Thumbnails are handy, but often what you see is a quite large box around a quite short line of text. Being able to change those icon boxes into straight lines of text would let you get more on the Start Page.

Alternatively, you can change the background to an image, and expand the sections that are of most use to you

Revolutionary

The Start Page is not revolutionary, except that you may come to look back on previous versions of Safari and wonder how you got by without it.

For instance, while everyone's mileage will vary, some AppleInsider writers found that they'd accrued many favicons that they stored as tabs in Safari. With the new Start Page, it was easy enough to move these favorites into the page and free up room on the tab bar.

Avoiding the News? 5 Alternative Ways to Keep Up With Current Affairs

4 free methods to remove watermarks from pdfs, not every gadget needs to be a smart device: here's why.

When you open a browser window or a new tab in a browser, the default page you see is known as the start page. Most browsers have their own ways to help you get to where you want to go, like shortcuts to your most-visited sites in Chrome's Speed Dial. But as these apps and extensions show, you can do a lot more in the start page.

The primary idea behind most of these is to give you access to your links in an organized and coherent manner while still being quick. They usually also include a search bar and information about the current time, date, and weather. Some of them do a lot more though, giving you widgets to make a custom page as you see fit. It's just a matter of finding the right start page for you.

1. StartTreeV2 (Web): Tree-Style Speed Dial for New Tab

StartTreeV2 is a custom start page for your browser that presents your shortcuts in a tree-style system. It's completely customizable and requires no installation.

The tree is broadly divided into two sections: bookmarks above and search below. By default, it is set to search DuckDuckGo, but you can choose between DuckDuckGo and Google as per your preferences or even set up both. You'll find the search URL instructions on the Github page for StartTreeV2.

You can add a bookmark name and URL under any tree in the bookmarks section. To create new trees or sub-trees, click the plus sign at the highest branch you want. You can drag and drop the bookmarks between sections or drag-and-drop whole sections too. Everything is configurable.

Once you're done, generate a personal StartTreeV2 URL with your setup by clicking the tick sign in the top-right corner. Then, set up this URL as your personal start page in the browser of your choice. The Github page has instructions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and any other details you might need.

2. Startpage (Chrome, Firefox): Minimalist Speed Dial With Organized Bookmarks

Like StartTreeV2, Startpage also focuses on minimalism and speed. All you see on the new tab is a greeting, the current date and time, and the current weather outside. Along with that, you'll get a bar for searching DuckDuckGo, and a few boxes with links. It's all presented in a black, grey, and white color scheme that looks great.

The boxes are the highlight here. Startpage encourages you to organize your bookmarks or most-visited sites and pages into sections like work, home, social, media, games, news, and so on. It's a time-saving system that lets you quickly locate a link.

Now, all that said, Startpage is a little difficult to configure if you're not tech-inclined. You'll have to manually install the extension on Chrome or Firefox and do a few more steps in Firefox to make it your default new tab page. These instructions are laid out in the Startpage Github and instructions on how to change the settings.

The settings page is a basic JSON editor, where you'll need to change values to add your links or change the layout. On the bright side, this makes it highly customizable and gives you full control. But it won't be easy at first, so again, follow the Github instructions carefully.

3. Bonjourr (Chrome, Firefox, Edge): Apple-Inspired Design for Minimalist Start Page

Bonjourr is a beautiful, minimalist, and lightweight start page for desktop or mobile browsers. The developers say they took inspiration from Apple's design policies to create something that looks good but is also functional.

Once you install the extension, every time you open a New Tab, Bonjourr will show the current time, the date, and day and bring up weather information and forecast for your location. All of this is presented on a beautiful wallpaper from a hand-selected collection of photos on Unsplash, slightly blurred and opaque for better visibility of your information.

Bonjourr lets you control every detail about the page, with things like the date and time format, weather geolocation settings, etc. You can also add shortcuts for favorite links and set them to open in a new tab by default. You can also add a search bar with your preferred search engine and source motivational quotes at the bottom of the page to keep you going.

The extension respects your privacy and doesn't require any logins to use it. While Bonjourr is an extension, you can also use it as an online URL, which means you can use it in Safari or mobile browsers too. The customizations you make will be stored in your browser's cache, so make sure you save your settings before deleting the cache.

Download: Bonjourr for Chrome | Firefox | Edge (Free)

4. New Tab Studio (Chrome, Firefox): Add Widgets to Customize Start Page in New Tab

New Tab Studio is one of the most powerful and productive New Tab extensions for browsers . It comes with a range of widgets that you can add as per your custom needs and create a truly unique and personal start page.

Once you install the extension, you're ready to start using it; but if you want to sync it over two different computers or browsers, you'll need to log in via Google. Here's a list of the widgets you can add:

  • Common: text, weather, calculator, image, shape, or line
  • Date: analog clock, text clock, digital clock, card-flipping clock, countdown, count up
  • Productivity: habit tracker, to-do list, notes, quotes, and calendar
  • Navigation: top sites, search bar, links, bookmarks, Google shortcuts
  • Iframe: Custom address, Google Calendar, Google Translate, Facebook, random Wikipedia article, random chess puzzle, CNN news, stock prices, currency converter

Each widget can have its own custom size, font family, color (font and background), rounded or square edges, and drop shadows.

In the free version of New Tab Studio, you get three workspaces (which you can switch between) and five widgets per workspace. The pro version removes these limits, but you can also gain extra widgets for free by sharing the extension with friends.

Download: New Tab Studio for Chrome | Firefox (Free)

5. Tabliss (Chrome, Firefox, Edge): Free, Private Start Page With Custom Widgets

If you're looking for a free start page with customizable widgets and a focus on privacy, Tabliss beats New Tab Studio. It has no subscriptions or ads and is built by volunteers and users so there is no data mining. It is also translated into 40 languages by the community.

Tabliss uses an Unsplash image as the default background, but you can customize this by choosing your own images, a new group of Unsplash pictures, or even patterns from GIPHY for animated backgrounds. Obviously, you can customize the date and time layout and then add widgets.

Current widgets include a search box, quick links, to-do list, weather, notes, quotes, custom messages, NBA scores, IP info, Github calendar, and work hours. You can also add a Custom CSS or Javascript box as a widget.

You can't drag-and-drop the widgets like with New Tab Studio to create a custom layout. But within each widget's individual settings, you'll find the option to put them in one of nine screen grids and set their size. You can also set their font type, weight, and color.

Tabliss also has a web version to try this out, and this can also be used on mobiles as a custom start page. Make sure you click Persist Settings to save your settings permanently in your browser.

Extensions Add Bloat, Try to Customize the Browser New Tab

These are just some of the several fantastic extensions to make a better New Tab start page. But remember, browsers take up a lot of memory these days, and extensions only add to that. So if you're already struggling to run your browser on your computer, more extensions aren't the answer.

However, you can look at improving the new tab page that comes preloaded in a browser. For example, you can customize the new tab page in Chrome to add your own background and add custom links as shortcuts. Depending on the browser you use, there's a lot you can do to keep it quick.

How to Edit Photos on Your iPhone (Using the Photos App)

Today's nyt connections hints and answer for june 26 (#381), i put up with messy passwords too long, here's what the cleanup looked like.

Traditionally, a homepage is the first website your browser loads when you start it. But by default, Safari on Mac opens up a window of Favorites instead. If you'd like Safari to start with a website of your choice, follow these simple steps.

First, open the Safari web browser by clicking its icon in the dock, by using Spotlight Search , or by selecting it from the macOS Applications folder . From there, navigate to the page you'd like to use as your home page. It can be any website you want.

In the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Safari > Preferences.

In Preferences > General, click the "Set to Current Page" button. This changes your home page to the current website Safari has open.

After clicking the button, the address in the "Homepage" field will change to the address of the current page.

Next, we'll make it so you see your home page when you open Safari. In Preferences > General, click the drop-down menu beside the "New Windows Open With" listing.

In the drop-down menu, select the "Homepage" option.

If desired, you can repeat the same step with the "New Tabs Open With" option. In that case, every time you open a new tab, you'll see your home page.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimizations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.

How to Change Your Homepage in Safari

Mobile and desktop Safari use different procedures

What to Know

  • Safari on Mac: With Safari open, choose  Safari  >  Preferences > select General tab.
  • Then, next to Homepage, add a URL or select Set to Current Page .
  • Safari iOS app: Open the page you want > Sharing icon > Add to Home Screen .

This article explains how to change your Safari homepage for the Mac and the Safari app for iOS devices. This information applies to Macs with macOS Monterey (12) through OS X El Capitan (10.11), as well as iPhones and iPads with iOS 15 through iOS 11 and iPad OS 15 through iPadOS 13.

How to Set the Homepage in Safari on a Mac

You can choose any page you want to display when you launch Safari . For example, if you usually begin browsing with a Google search, set the Google homepage as your default. If the first thing you do when you go online is check your email, tell Safari to go to your provider's site.

Here's how to set your Safari homepage on a Mac.

Open Safari on your Mac.

Select Safari from the menu bar and choose Preferences from the drop-down menu.

Select the  General  tab on the Preferences screen.

Next to  Homepage , type the URL you want to set as the Safari homepage.

Select Set to Current Page to choose the page you're on.

Exit the General preferences window to save your changes.

Set the Safari Homepage on an iPhone

You can't set a homepage on an iPhone or another iOS device the same way you can with Safari on the desktop. However, you can add a web page link to your device's Home screen and open it to go directly to that page.

Tap the Safari icon on the iPhone Home screen to open the browser.

Open the web page you want to use as a Safari shortcut.

Tap Sharing (the square with an arrow) at the bottom of the web page to display the Sharing options.

Scroll up on the Sharing screen to see more options.

Tap  Add to Home Screen .

Accept the suggested name or change it, then tap Add to create the shortcut.

You can tap the shortcut instead of opening Safari to always start at the site you chose.

Your Safari start page, or "homepage", is the page that loads whenever you start Safari. You can change this page to whatever you'd like, but if you have an adware infection it may keep getting reset. If this is the case, you can try manually removing the adware so that you can regain your control. If you use an iOS device, you can create custom shortcuts to simulate a traditional start page.

Changing Your Homepage

Step 1 Open the Safari browser.

  • If you're using Safari for Windows, click the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences". It is highly recommended that you switch to a more up-to-date browser, as Safari for Windows is no longer supported by Apple and is not receiving any security updates.

Step 3 Select the General tab if it isn't already.

  • You can also click Set to Current Page to set your new homepage to the page that is currently open.
  • If your homepage keeps resetting to something else, red on to the next section.

Favorite news site

The latest U.S. and global news is available from many websites, with popular sites being CNN, Fox News, New York Times, The Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal.
