Our happy clients

Thanks for the helpful advice and treatment you have given me over the years.

Chitty Patel, Wimbledon Parkside

My son was going travelling to South America and needed some travel advice, malaria tablets and vaccinations and again James spent quite some time going through things with him to ensure that he had a smooth trip. His doctor’s surgery were unable to fit him in before his trip and the team at D Parry were excellent. I know that I wouldn’t have got such a personal service elsewhere.

Travel vaccination advice

If you're planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world.

Vaccinations are available to protect you against infections such as yellow fever , typhoid and hepatitis A .

In the UK, the  NHS routine immunisation (vaccination) schedule protects you against a number of diseases, but does not cover all of the infectious diseases found overseas.

When should I start thinking about the vaccines I need?

If possible, see the GP or a private travel clinic at least 6 to 8 weeks before you're due to travel.

Some vaccines need to be given well in advance to allow your body to develop immunity.

And some vaccines involve a number of doses spread over several weeks or months.

You may be more at risk of some diseases, for example, if you're:

  • travelling in rural areas
  • backpacking
  • staying in hostels or camping
  • on a long trip rather than a package holiday

If you have a pre-existing health problem, this may make you more at risk of infection or complications from a travel-related illness.

Which travel vaccines do I need?

You can find out which vaccinations are necessary or recommended for the areas you'll be visiting on these websites:

  • Travel Health Pro
  • NHS Fit for Travel

Some countries require proof of vaccination (for example, for polio or yellow fever vaccination), which must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) before you enter or when you leave a country.

Saudi Arabia requires proof of vaccination against certain types of meningitis for visitors arriving for the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.

Even if an ICVP is not required, it's still a good idea to take a record of the vaccinations you have had with you.

Find out more about the vaccines available for travellers abroad

Where do I get my travel vaccines?

First, phone or visit the GP practice or practice nurse to find out whether your existing UK vaccinations are up-to-date.

If you have any records of your vaccinations, let the GP know what you have had previously.

The GP or practice nurse may be able to give you general advice about travel vaccinations and travel health, such as protecting yourself from malaria.

They can give you any missing doses of your UK vaccines if you need them.

Not all travel vaccinations are available free on the NHS, even if they're recommended for travel to a certain area.

If the GP practice can give you the travel vaccines you need but they are not available on the NHS, ask for:

  • written information on what vaccines are needed
  • the cost of each dose or course
  • any other charges you may have to pay, such as for some certificates of vaccination

You can also get travel vaccines from:

  • private travel vaccination clinics
  • pharmacies offering travel healthcare services

Which travel vaccines are free?

The following travel vaccines are available free on the NHS from your GP surgery:

  • polio (given as a combined diphtheria/tetanus/polio jab )
  • hepatitis A

These vaccines are free because they protect against diseases thought to represent the greatest risk to public health if they were brought into the country.

Which travel vaccines will I have to pay for?

You'll have to pay for travel vaccinations against:

  • hepatitis B
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • tick-borne encephalitis
  • tuberculosis (TB)
  • yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccines are only available from designated centres .

The cost of travel vaccines that are not available on the NHS will vary, depending on the vaccine and number of doses you need.

It's worth considering this when budgeting for your trip.

Other things to consider

There are other things to consider when planning your travel vaccinations, including:

  • your age and health – you may be more vulnerable to infection than others; some vaccines cannot be given to people with certain medical conditions
  • working as an aid worker – you may come into contact with more diseases in a refugee camp or helping after a natural disaster
  • working in a medical setting – a doctor, nurse or another healthcare worker may require additional vaccinations
  • contact with animals – you may be more at risk of getting diseases spread by animals, such as rabies

If you're only travelling to countries in northern and central Europe, North America or Australia, you're unlikely to need any vaccinations.

But it's important to check that you're up-to-date with routine vaccinations available on the NHS.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Speak to a GP before having any vaccinations if:

  • you're pregnant
  • you think you might be pregnant
  • you're breastfeeding

In many cases, it's unlikely a vaccine given while you're pregnant or breastfeeding will cause problems for the baby.

But the GP will be able to give you further advice about this.

People with immune deficiencies

For some people travelling overseas, vaccination against certain diseases may not be advised.

This may be the case if:

  • you have a condition that affects your body's immune system, such as HIV or AIDS
  • you're receiving treatment that affects your immune system, such as chemotherapy
  • you have recently had a bone marrow or organ transplant

A GP can give you further advice about this.

Non-travel vaccines

As well as getting any travel vaccinations you need, it's also a good opportunity to make sure your other vaccinations are up-to-date and have booster vaccines if necessary.

Although many routine NHS vaccinations are given during childhood, you can have some of them (such as the MMR vaccine ) as an adult if you missed getting vaccinated as a child.

There are also some extra NHS vaccinations for people at higher risk of certain illnesses, such as the flu vaccine , the hepatitis B vaccine and the BCG vaccine for tuberculosis (TB) .

Your GP can advise you about any NHS vaccinations you might need.

Online Services

Travel Health and Immunisations

We are pleased to offer our registered patients a travel health service. Our nurse uses up-to-date information to advise you on your health needs related to destinations around the world. They can administer most vaccinations and provide prescriptions for treatments where needed.

Many people are taking long haul holidays requiring complicated courses of vaccines. Children also need to he vaccinated for travel abroad. To assist you in these requirements please see additional travel health information below.

Booking your Appointment with the Nurse

  • Travel Risk Assessment: If you’re planning a trip abroad please complete a Travel Risk Assessment form (available from reception) with details of your proposed journey. Alternatively if you prefer, drop into surgery to complete a form. ( Kindly note that this service is for registered patients only)
  • Travel Appointment: Once you have submitted your form, please call us to book a travel clinic appointment with the nurse.
  • Allow Plenty of Time: Patients are advised to allow plenty of time for vaccinations (at least two or three months) especially if traveling to an out of the way place where they’ll be living or working among local people. Some courses of vaccine such as rabies or Hepatitis B need to be given over several weeks.

Prescriptions

If you require a prescription for vaccinations this will be ready to collect 2 working days following your appointment.

Holiday Health

It is always a wise precaution to pack some essential items in case of illness on holiday. Do choose medicines according to your needs and the country you are intending to visit. lf you take prescription medicines regularly remember to pack them too.

You may want to consider packing the following:

  • Paracetamol Travel Sickness tablets Plasters and a small crepe bandage
  • Rehydration solutions such as Dioralyte, Anti-diarrhoeal e.g. lmodium
  • High factor sunscreen
  • Anti-material tablets, Water purification tablets, Insect repellent
  • Condoms / other contraceptives
  • Sunhats for yourself and children

Mosquito Bite Avoidance for Travellers

In many tropical countries, mosquitoes can spread diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, West Nile, malaria, yellow fever and Zika. Here are five simple rules you should follow to reduce your risk of infections spread by mosquitoes.

Travel Vaccination Charges

We offer most of the travel health service at no additional charge to the patient. However the NHS does not cover the cost of all the treatments you may need. Therefore, for some services you may need to pay.

Malaria Tablets are NOT provided on the NHS  and sometimes can be bought over the counter or may require a private prescription. The nurse can advise regarding this or you could discuss with your pharmacist.  REMEMBER  some tablets have to be started at least one week before you travel and you need continue to take them when you return to the UK for the advised length of time.

A list of these charges is held at reception.

  • A face covering (unless medically exempt).

How can I show proof of COVID status?

For ticket-holders based in the UK:

  • Proof of a negative lateral flow test, reported and demonstrated via a text message or email from the  NHS self-report tool . This can be on your mobile device (including a screenshot) or a printout. The test needs to be taken within 48 hours of your entry into the Grounds.
  • Proof of full vaccination, with the second dose administered at least 14 days before your visit. It must be demonstrated either via the NHS App, or the English vaccination letter (not a vaccination card), or via the  Scottish  vaccination record services.
  • For residents of England, you may demonstrate your COVID status – either full vaccination, or negative lateral flow test, or proof of natural immunity (positive PCR test within the last six months, after self-isolation has ended and up to 180 days after taking the test), demonstrated via your NHS COVID Pass on the NHS App. For more information on how to do this, please click here .
  • For residents of Wales, please check the latest guidelines from the Welsh Government by visiting this website .
  • For residents of Northern Ireland, you may demonstrate your COVID status through a negative lateral flow test, reported and demonstrated via a text message or email from the  NHS self-report tool .

For ticket-holders based outside the UK :

  • Proof of a negative lateral flow test, reported and demonstrated via a text message or email from the  NHS self-report tool . The test needs to be taken within 48 hours of your entry to the Grounds.
  • Other test results will not be accepted, such as a PCR test result from a private company, or an international vaccination card or letter.

Can you provide more information about the lateral flow test?

Lateral flow tests help to find cases in people who may have no symptoms but are still infectious and can give the virus to others.

The test involves taking a sample from your tonsils (or where they would have been) and from your nose, using a swab. They are free of charge, can be self-administered at home and you can get a result in 30 minutes.

You have three ways to access rapid lateral flow tests:

  • Order your test to be sent to your home address via the gov.uk website .
  • Pick up a lateral flow test from your local chemist, use the NHS website to find your nearest pick-up point.
  • Go to your local community testing centre, use the NHS website to find your nearest location.

Please note the following:

  • The test needs to be taken within 48 hours of your entry into the Grounds.
  • Lateral flow tests are free of charge and should be self-administered.
  • The result of the lateral flow test needs to be uploaded using the NHS self-report tool , whether you are a UK resident or a ticket-holder from abroad. Please do this within 24 hours of taking the test.

You must show proof of your negative test result. You can show that by:

  • Via email or text message (from the NHS self-report tool ). This can be on your mobile device (including a screenshot) or a printout.
  • Via your COVID Pass on the NHS App (available for England residents only).

Am I required to take a PCR test (a fee-based test sent to a lab)?

No. To attend The Championships you need to provide proof of both vaccinations (first and second dose) with the second dose administered at least 14 days before your visit; or a negative rapid lateral flow test taken within 48 hours of your visit (for those aged 11 and over); or, if resident in England, proof of natural immunity (positive PCR test within the last six months, after self-isolation has ended and up to 180 days after taking the test) demonstrated via NHS COVID Pass on the NHS App. If your child is aged under 11, evidence of COVID status is not required for entry.

How can I show proof of my vaccinations?

England  residents:

If you are fully vaccinated (first and second doses) and you live in England, you can show your COVID Pass on the NHS App when entering the Grounds. For more information on how to do this, please click  here .

You are required to have had your second dose administered at least 14 days prior to your visit.

Please note the ‘NHS App’ is different to the ‘NHS COVID-19’ app.

A non-digital letter is also available through the NHS website, but please be aware of the potential time involved before you receive your letter, should you choose this option. Request a COVID Pass letter via the NHS website

Scotland  residents:

If you live in  Scotland , you can obtain your vaccination status  on this website .

Wales residents:

If you live in  Wales , please check the latest guidelines from the Welsh Government by visiting this website .

Northern Ireland  residents and residents of  any other international country :

At this stage, there is no process for residents of  Northern Ireland  or any other international country to evidence their vaccination status.

Instead, please show proof of a negative lateral flow test, reported and demonstrated via a text message or email from the  NHS self-report tool . You may undertake the lateral flow test upon your arrival to England by following the instructions above. You do not need to be a resident of England to upload your result using the  NHS self-report tool.  The test needs to be taken within 48 hours of your entry to the Grounds.

Can I show my paper certificate (that I received when I was vaccinated in the UK)?

No. Please use the COVID Pass on the NHS App.

The NHS App is only showing one of my two vaccines, what can I do to gain entry?

Please show proof of a negative lateral flow test, reported and demonstrated via a text message or email from the  NHS self-report tool .

What if I have a positive lateral flow test?

A positive result from a lateral flow test means it is likely that you had coronavirus when the test was done. Attendees and anyone they live with must not attend The Championships and self-isolate immediately. Attendees are then advised to get a PCR test (a test that is sent to a lab) to confirm their result as soon as possible.

Please contact the Ticket Office on  [email protected]  without delay. We will cancel your tickets and arrange a refund up to 24 hours before the day you are due to attend.

Can I still attend The Championships if I have returned a positive lateral flow test?

No, there is strictly no admittance unless you have proof of a negative lateral flow test or both vaccinations (with the second dose administered at least 14 days before your visit).

Please contact the Ticket Office on  [email protected]  without delay. We will cancel your tickets and arrange a refund right up to 24 hours before the day you are due to attend.

Can I still attend The Championships if a close contact has COVID but I am negative and/or double vaccinated?

No, there is strictly no admittance if you are a close contact of someone with COVID or you have been triggered as a close contact by the NHS Covid-19 App. It is your legal and civic duty to comply with the rules around close contact.

Please note the following paragraph from our Conditions of Entry:

Ticket Holders must not attend the Grounds if they have been identified by any competent authority as having had any Close Contact (as defined below) with a person who is or may be infected by COVID-19 and their self-isolation period includes the date they are due to attend The Championships (“ Infected Person ”). For the purposes of these COVID-19 Conditions, “ Close Contact ”   means the Ticket Holder in question: (a) lives in the same household as another person who has COVID-19 symptoms or has tested positive for COVID-19, (b) has had any of the following types of contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19: (i) face-to-face contact including being coughed on or having a face-to-face conversation within one metre, (ii) been within one metre for one minute or longer without face-to-face contact, (iii) been within 2 metres of someone for more than 15 minutes (either as a one-off contact, or added up together over one day) or (iv) has travelled in the same vehicle or plane with such person. In the event that a Ticket Holder is notified by a competent authority that they have had Close Contact (as defined above) with an Infected Person and asked to self-isolate, they shall leave the Grounds immediately and return to their place of residence as soon as possible, using best endeavours to use means of travel which would reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

What happens if I (or my guest) forget to take a lateral flow test? Can I take a test when I arrive at the Grounds?

No. You will be required to visit a local chemist to collect a lateral flow test, self-administer the test, and upload the result using the  NHS self-report tool  before entering the Grounds.

Will guests need to wear a face covering?

You will be required to wear face coverings while entering and moving around the Grounds. To further trial the suspension of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (face coverings and social distancing), the use of face coverings and social distancing will not be mandatory while ticket holders are seated within the venue.

My child is aged between 11 and 16 years and cannot use the COVID Pass on the NHS App. How can I demonstrate their COVID status?

They can demonstrate their COVID status through proof of a negative lateral flow test, reported and demonstrated via a text message or email from the NHS self-report tool . The test needs to be taken within 48 hours of your entry to the Grounds.

Travel Medicine Clinics Overview

A barefoot woman stands at an overlook above Barcelona, Spain.

A visit to a Mayo Clinic travel medicine clinic before you depart on an international trip can help ensure a safer, smoother experience.

If you're planning a trip overseas, make one of your first stops a consultation with specialists in the travel medicine clinics at Mayo's campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota. Availability of services may vary among locations. Please confirm when you request an appointment.

You meet with a travel medicine specialist who is knowledgeable about current health risks worldwide and who will promote safe and healthy travels by offering counseling, recommendations, vaccinations, prescriptions and, if needed, a referral to another expert for complex medical conditions.

Virtual visits

You might be eligible for virtual pretravel consultations. If you're interested in this option, talk with the patient appointment specialist when you contact us to schedule an appointment.

COVID-19 and international travel

International travel has become more complex due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and some countries have exit and entry requirements. Your travel medicine specialist will be able to help you prepare for these requirements so that you have a smoother travel experience.

Before your trip

Schedule an appointment for a pretravel consultation with a Mayo Clinic travel medicine clinic well before you depart so the travel medicine specialist can help you prepare. Ideally, this appointment would occur as soon as travel plans are established and at least two weeks — and preferably 4-8 weeks — before departure. When requesting an appointment for pretravel consultation, be prepared to inform the patient appointment specialist of the following:

  • All countries being visited
  • Dates and duration of travel
  • Any unusual circumstances

At or preferably before the appointment, you will want to provide copies of all available immunization records (including the International Certificate of Vaccination, commonly referred to as the yellow card). Doing so will expedite your clinic visit and may decrease the number of vaccines you are advised to receive.

Your in-depth pre-travel consultation may include:

  • A country-by-country assessment of all health risks specific for your travel itinerary, such as exotic infectious agents, altitude sickness and heat exhaustion
  • A review of your medical and immunization history profile with advice for health promotion and illness prevention
  • Advice for the high-risk traveler
  • Immunization recommendations, counseling and administration of vaccines to prevent illnesses
  • Vector precautions counseling
  • Malaria prevention counseling, with prescriptions if needed
  • Traveler's diarrhea counseling for prevention and self-treatment, with antibiotic prescription if needed
  • Identification of health resources in the countries you'll be visiting
  • Counseling on travel-related risks such as altitude sickness, with preventive prescriptions if needed
  • An opportunity to ask questions about the unique health and safety concerns for your travel itinerary

You will leave your travel medicine clinic appointment with much helpful and up-to-date information.

After your trip

  • Depending on where you're going and for how long, the travel clinic may recommend a routine follow-up evaluation after your return.
  • If you return sick, the travel clinic staff members are Mayo Clinic infectious diseases experts who provide comprehensive post-travel consultations for evaluation and treatment of travel-related illness, including parasitic and other diseases common to tropical regions but uncommon in the United States.

  • Will I need specific vaccinations or malaria pills

Will I need specific vaccinations or malaria pills?

If you are coming from the United States, Canada or Europe, you are not required to obtain any special immunizations.   However, the United States Center for Disease Control recommends that you be up to date with all routine vaccinations such as the MMR, polio, chickenpox, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, and the yearly flu shot.  The CDC also recommends travelers get vaccinated for typhoid and hepatitis A.  Please check the official CDC website  for details.  In addition, you should also check with your physician prior to traveling.

Malaria is not a real threat in Costa Rica, so you do not need to take malaria pills.  There are only a few cases reported each year and usually in very remote locations. However, to be safe, we recommend consulting with your physician.

You will be required to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are traveling from any of the following countries: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Guyana, and Venezuela.
