India Tours & Vacations

Travellers looking at a shrine carving with their guide in Delhi, India

There’s probably no other country on the planet that blazes its way into your memory like India.

Years later, you can still hear the morning calls of the chai wallahs; see smoke curling over the Ganges during a golden Varanasi sunrise , and smell the rich aromas of simmering curry. A lot of India tours rush from highlight to highlight, ticking them off in a blur of temples and tikka. But not us. Our India holidays are more about spotting Bengal tigers in Ranthambhore or Panna National Park, hanging with nomads in Jaisalmer, meeting the holy men of Pushkar, or hunting down the best street eats. This isn’t just the India you see on postcards. This is India as it is. Raw, bizarre and totally addictive.

Best time to visit india.

Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Culture and customs

India is one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practicing Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioral standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Geography and environment

India shares land borders with   Bangladesh ,   China , Pakistan,   Nepal ,   Myanmar   and   Bhutan , and also has wide stretches of coastline along the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. As the seventh largest country in the world, India is home to a variety of terrains - the Himalayas of the north, the deserts and plains of the west, the fertile waterways of the south and the hills and forests of the east. Development is occurring at a rapid pace, with India's large, sprawling cities consisting of everything from five star hotels to shanty towns, and with modern malls and cinemas sitting comfortably alongside bazaars and street food vendors. A trip through India will reveal a diverse range of landscapes, villages, cities and environments.

History and government

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilizations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

Recent history

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Although it took decades, India finally gained independence in 1947. More recently, India has seen dramatic societal changes mainly due to modernization and globalization. A new wave of prosperity has seen the rise of the middle class, with men and women entering into new work roles in telecommunications, manufacturing and business. India's large cities are dealing with the mass migration of rural citizens, who are moving to the city to seek better employment, education and opportunities for their children.

Festivals and events in India

Many of India’s biggest festivals are religious and follow either the Indian lunar calendar or the Islamic calendar. The dates may change each year, but the fervor of celebration never does. Some of the best and biggest festivals to keep an eye out for in India are:

Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of colored powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolor Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colorful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colorful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and the beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. An incredible energy can be felt throughout the city as people pack the streets for a massive party and an elaborate statue of Ganesh is paraded around.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Camels are traded and raced, acrobats and performers entertain crowds at a nearby fair, while finely dressed males and bejeweled females take the chance to let their hair down.

There are quite a number of carriers that are all very competitive, but Airtel is probably the best option for travelers. The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

How will I be traveling around India?

Safari through jungles and national parks aboard a jeep, which is ideal for conquering the difficult terrain and offers supreme wildlife viewing opportunities.

Cruising the waterways of India is a revealing, inspiring experience. Whether it’s the iconic Ganges or peaceful Kerala backwaters, seeing India from the water is a must.

Traveling by train is one of the great experiences of India. It's a system which looks like chaos, but it works - and well.

Use the efficient metro to get around the sights and suburbs of Delhi.

Zip around the big cities of India by auto rickshaw.

What kind of accommodation will I be staying in?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in India you may find yourself staying in a homestay.

Make new friends, feast on authentic home cooking and receive kind hospitality while staying with friendly families in India.

With walks, wildlife spotting and adventure sports nearby, staying in a jungle resort is the perfect way to see another side of India.

From ex-royal palaces to historic hill stations and converted forts, India is full of heritage properties that have been turned into comfortable accommodation with an old-world touch.

What is it like traveling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

  • We don't do short trips as we don't want travelers to spend a lot of time in driving from one place to another. Instead we provide comfortable itineraries with ample time for relaxation and leisure activities like exploring markets, cafes etc.
  • We don’t do backpacking and trekking trips and moreover focus on culture, heritage and natural beauty. However, we do include adventure activities (wherever available) i.e adventure sports, day treks, jungle walks, boating etc on our trips.
  • We use standard hotels/homestays/camps for accommodation. However, we emphasize on neat & clean rooms with great locations. Generally, the rooms are provided on twin sharing basis. But at some remote or unexplored places where accommodation options are scarce, triple sharing rooms are provided.
  • In twin sharing, double bedded rooms are provided with separate bedding (blankets) primarily. Traveler who want a single room for himself/herself can get single rooms as per the mentioned price. Please note that solo travelers above 44 Yrs, will be provided a single room and will be charged accordingly.
  • We use only our set of hotels which are handpicked by our travel experts on the parameters of service, comfort and location. This allows us to maintain our standards.
  • We don’t share contact of travellers or create groups on social networks or chat apps before the starting of the tour. Travellers can share their contacts with others while traveling together.
  • There wont be any tour leaders accompanying the travelers as we want them to explore the sites on their own. Our experienced drivers are well versed with programs and assist travelers in day to day sightseeing. Also most of trips are leisure tours and hence not require any guidance. Only for treks, we provide trek leaders.
  • Foreign travelers will have to pay 4-5 % extra on the given prices, to cover the international bank transfer charges.

India Group Tours for Solo Travellers

Travel solo as part of a group tour to India

why travel solo to india?

Ancient spirituality, urban vibrancy and an eye to the future combine to tantalising effect in India.

On a group trip with other like-minded solo travellers in India, you’re in for a rich sensory experience. Whether you’re weaving through the rickshaws of Delhi, navigating the back alleys of Jaipur or drifting through the backwaters and beaches of Kerala, you’ll find moments of beauty at every corner.

Ancient traditions are the lifeblood of Indian culture. The birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism, this is a country that exudes transcendental spirituality, evident in everything from architecture to everyday beliefs and locals threading marigolds outside temples as offerings.

The north is home to India’s most iconic (and chaotic) cities. Yet travel south to Kerala, and you’ll find yourself in another, more-tranquil world altogether. One of lush coconut groves and inviting beaches, with fragrant gently-spiced curries never far out of reach.

Top places to visit in India

This state on India’s tropical Malabar Coast is a beach lover’s dream with nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline. Inshore from its palm-lined beaches you’ll find vast tea, coffee and spice plantations on the slopes of the Western Ghats, and backwaters to explore by boat.

The Taj Mahal may be Agra’s biggest tourist draw, but it’s not its only attraction. The Mughal empire has left its rich history within the city through a grand fort that overlooks the banks of the Yamuna River, as well as tombs and mausoleums.

Embrace the chaos of Delhi to truly make the most of a trip here. A wander around the city will have you weaving around tuk-tuks, spice stalls and strings of macaques silhouetted over rooftops, via haggling merchants and textile shops. Take in the local street food on a tour or turn to the temples to dial down the pace.

The capital of Rajasthan displays its royal history through opulent palaces and erstwhile aristocratic homes, many now converted into character-filled boutique hotels. At the centre sits the grand City Palace complex with an old town encircled by rose-toned walls that give “The Pink City” its name.

12 handpicked best india group tours, routes and itineraries .

travel group india

My Favourite India Group Tours – Handpicked by an Expat.

There’s no doubt that India is one of the most fascinating, exotic and potentially life changing travel destinations in the world. However, traveling in India can be challenging, especially the first time  and especially for women alone. If you don’t want to  travel India alone or you want to leave the planning and organising to the experts and just enjoy your Indian adventure hassle free then taking one of the many India group tours or small group tours might be a good way to ensure your first trip to India is memorable for the right reasons!

There are so many India group tours it can be difficult to decide which company to go with, which places to see and which itinerary is best. After traveling in India for 5 years and living here for 3 I’m often asked to recommend the best India group tours so I thought it would be helpful to put together a list of my favourites from the companies I know, use and trust and also from friends and readers recommendations. I also wrote a post specifically on the best backpacker tours of India.

This isn’t a sponsored post, none of the companies I recommend have asked me to write this article, but I have included affiliate links where possible so that if you do find my recommendations useful and want to book then if you use my links I can earn a commission to keep the site going at no extra cost to you! 😉

Anna in Varanasi

Of course, it is possible, and enjoyable, to backpack India independently, even as a solo female traveller ( check out my tips for women here ) But if you are looking for travel buddies, not feeling too confident or just want to relax and enjoy the trip and let the experts do the planning and navigating, then taking a group tour is a good idea, especially if you have limited time as a tour will allow you to see the best of India without the hassle and time spent planning or figuring out how to get to the next destination.

If you’re on a longer trip it’s also a good idea to start off your Indian adventure with a group tour and then once you’re more acclimatized to the craziness you’ll feel more confident to move on and explore on your own, or maybe even with new friends that you met on the tour. Check out my recommended itinerary for 3 months backpacking in India.

best India group tours

Which company does the best India group tours?

There are hundreds of tour companies so its important to do your research not just on the tour itinerary and route but on the company as well and check things like the level of comfort and service and the age group and amount of other customers on the tour to make sure it’s the perfect one for you. You don’t want to end up on a bus with 50 other tourists so most of the companies I’ve recommend specialise in small group tours.

I’ve included a whole range of tours in this post so there should be something for everyone. If you are looking for fun, cheap tours for young travellers and backpackers check out this post specifically on the best backpacker tours of India.

Make sure you choose a reputable company, most of the India group tours I recommend are run by my favourite leading adventure tour companies; G Adventures and Intrepid . Both are award winning tour companies that run some awesome, adventurous, fun and socially responsible, small group tours of India. They have a huge selection with something for all budgets, ages and interests.

Both G Adventures and Intrepid offer last min or special deals so check out G Adventures last minute deals and Intrepid last minute deals before you book as you may be able to find a bargain and save money. Intrepid are also running an initiative to help empower local women by employing more women as tour guides on their India tours. Check out this article in The Guardian for more details.

With local women at the Gateway of India in Mumbai

Geckos Adventures and Contiki are also great for younger travelers as they have really fun and cheap India backpacking tours and trips that are perfect for 18 – 30 somethings. Exodus and Explore also offer good itineraries and small group tours of India aimed at more mature travelers who want more comfort. You can also compare itineraries, reviews and prices from loads of different tour companies and find great deals on Tour Radar  – check out this page where you can  get 60 % off Asia tours.

I wouldn’t really recommend just finding a cheap deal with an unknown Indian company online, while there are some great companies in India (I’ve recommended some at the bottom of the post) there are also alot of scams so it’s better to stick with a reputable global company that has been tried and tested by many travellers over the years, especially if its your first India trip.

The Best India Group Tours, Routes and Itineraries

To help you find the perfect trip here are my favourite India group tours. I’ve handpicked the best small group tour companies which visit my favourite places in India with the best itineraries and prices.

I’ve listed them in order for duration so you can see the most of India depending on how much time you have. If you’re short on time taking a tour will enable you to see more than if you traveled independently.

There’s something for everyone, if you’re into cycling, river cruises or culinary tours I’ve also included some suggestions at the end of the post. And why not visit neighbouring Sri Lanka or Nepal on the same trip! There are some tours that combine two of these amazing countries into one incredible trip!

The best India group tours – 2 weeks or less

If you have 2 weeks or less to explore India then it really does make sense to take a tour because India is such a diverse and huge country and traveling independently can be challenging and time consuming. travel group india

I often recommend starting your Indian adventure in South India as places like Kerala and Goa are much more chilled out and less chaotic than the cities in North India. This tour visits many of my favourite destinations in South India by rail. Traveling by train in India is the best way to travel and it’s an fascinating experience by itself.

Starting in Goa, you can choose to chill out on the beaches or explore the heritage site of Portuguese Old Goa. Next you’ll explore the magical ruins of Hampi, one of my favourite places in India, and then Mysore with it’s flamboyant palace.

Then visit the Tibetan monastery in Bylakuppe, enjoy the views and fabulous coffee in Madikeri and finish in Kochi in Kerala. This tour is packed with highlights and incredible sights but is far from the busy tourist trail of North India. This is one of my favourite India group tours Click here for prices and to book.

Next head up the mountains to Dharamshala, the home of the Dalai Lama, and the hill station of Shimla. This tour is the best backpacker tour for North India. It’s a ‘yolo’ trip so it’s fun, adventurous  and affordable and it includes all of the highlights of North India. Some tours skip the less well known places but this one really has all the highlights of Rajasthan, the most colourful, captivating state in India.

Want to try something different?

Visit india and nepal.

If you want to visit both India and Nepal on the same trip it’s easy by taking the G Adventures Delhi to Kathmandu Adventure – 15 Days. This is the best itinerary I’ve found as it visits not only India’s most famous sights; the Golden Triangle; Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and holy Varanasi but also some more off beat gems like Orchha along the way.

Culinary tours of India

India is known for it’s spicy curries but real, authentic Indian food is totally different and has so much to offer than what you would find in an Indian takeaway back home. Eat your way to the heart of the nation and get a different insight into Indian culture and everyday life on a food or culinary tour of India.

Explore vibrant local markets, sample street food safely, enjoy home cooked meals and learn how to make delicious, authentic Indian food yourself. Intrepid offer some amazing food adventures in India, like this 15 day Real Food Adventure that takes you through the tastes and sights of Delhi, Rajasthan, Mumbai and Goa. You could also try a quick 3 day Bite Sized Food tours in Delhi.

Mumbai City and Slum Tours

Reality Tours and Travel are a responsible tour company who provide authentic, fun and off beat day tours that allow you to see the real Mumbai and give some of the profits back to the communities. I went on the tour of Dharavi slum on my first day in India and it was an eye opening and inspiring experience. Click to read more about how visiting Dharavi slum changed my perspectives on poverty.  They also offer bicycle tours, night tours, market and temple tours and village tours.

Cruise along the holy river Ganges

Escape the chaos of the cities and witness a more authentic and laid back way of life cruising along the holy river Ganges on a 12 day trip from Kolkata to Varanasi with G Adventures Cruise the Ganges, you’ll experience off beat villages untouched by tourism, historic and cultural sights and also visit Bodhgaya where the Buddha gained enlightenment.

Cycling tours of India

Slow down, get off the tourist trail and really experience a whole new side to India on a cycling tour. I would only recommend doing a cycling tour in Winter (Dec – Feb) as the heat might be too much otherwise. Exodus Travels offer great cycling tours in India including Kerala, Rajasthan and the epic Manali to Leh trip. See here for more details.   Intrepid also do a cycling tour of Rajasthan.

Get off the beaten track in unexplored North East India

Not many travellers make it to the stunning, tribal areas of North East India but I’ve been twice now and really love this very authentic, very different and really unexplored region. Traveling in North East India can be difficult to do independently because of permit requirements and a lack of public transport and hotels so it’s really best to take a tour of North East India.

I’ve travelled twice with Sange from Holiday Scout – an awesome local tour operator that knows this fascinating region in depth. See my review of traveling with Holiday Scout and more on my adventures in North East India here.

Maddy the guide was excellent. The trip was great, although could have done with a day less in Varanasi and a day extra in Agra, but all in all would highly recommend it. It's full on - if it's your first time in India (or even if not!) prepare to be tired, dirty, but blown away and amazing at the same time.

I had a great experience. Overall enjoyed the tour and the tour guide. I wished the hotel selection could have been better. A couple hotels were not up to the standard that I hoped for as well as the group.

We wanted to thank you for the tour you organised for us. We had a great experience every day with each of the tour guides being very knowledgeable and giving us a really good talk, walks and sightseeing. We also wanted to say our thanks to Danish. He was absolutely brilliant. From the moment he picked us up to the moment he dropped us back at the airport, we felt very safe with his driving. He is very very courteous, excellent driver, extremely polite and friendly. He always arrived on time and waited for us wherever we went. So thank you again and please pass our thanks to your colleagues and especially to Danish!! The only thing that could have been better would be a choice of hotels. Delhi hotel was poor, Agra was good, Jaipur was ok.

India's Top Selling Golden Triangle India Tour w/ Meals and Sunrise Taj Mahal

Just returned (2.4.2024) from a great week in India on the Golden Triangle tour. Booked through tourrada using Swastik india Journeys. Couldn't fault anything - hotels were good guides were knowledgeable and our driver Kan Singh was fantastic for the 5 days of our trip. Nothing was too much trouble for him and I would highly recommend him to others needing a patient flexible and skilful driver. And for what we paid outstanding value!

Our driver, Aman, was excellent. Despite his weak English he was good company and knowledgeable. The guides for individual visits were of mixed quality.

Sensational in every aspect. Firstly our tour leader Chandra was exceptional in his knowledge, approachability and care for all 12 of us. The tour was enlightening culturally, stimulating from the history perspective and enjoyable as the group melded really well. Thanks to all involved in putting g Premiun India together.

Well organised, the operator was very responsive to all emails and questions we had. The tour was well set out with knowledgeable guides and a great driver.

Golden Triangle Tour With Ranthambore

The trip was well organized. The driver was very good. The hotels were ok except for the Lily Pool Heritage in Jaipur. The room was worn out. Room service was provided only after 3 complaints at 8 pm and done in a lousy fashion. Moreover, the guys at the reception were anything but nice and helpful

Colorful India with Taj Mahal & Rajasthan Tour

Colorful India with Taj Mahal & Rajasthan

I enjoyed the whole trip. I particularly enjoyed Bikaner, Jaiselmar, and Udiapur, our driver Kan Singh was an amazing skilled driver, I can tend to car sickness and I was worried this might be an issue but he was so steady and safe I had no issues. The hotels were mainly good although the first one there Rocklands was really noisy and no hot water. The camel ride was good but the desert adventure camp had very loud Bollywood music into the night. In summary I would recommend this to but particularly our driver Kan Singh

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi Tour

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi

During our trip to India in September 2023, World Travel Experiences arranged a fantastic and adaptable private journey for our family covering Varanasi and the Golden Triangle. Their suggested add-ons were not only valuable but also fascinating, allowing us complete freedom to choose. We were truly impressed by their excellent communication and hospitality, which we greatly appreciated. Our transportation was in a comfortable car equipped with a convenient phone charger, accompanied by a friendly and accommodating driver. Moreover, at each city, we had the pleasure of meeting local guides who shared their extensive knowledge in a way that was both comprehensive and easy to understand. Overall, it was an incredibly pleasant experience.

Premium India in Depth Tour

Premium India in Depth

Intrepid Premium India in Depth (November 13 - 25) Mumbai - Delhi Excellent tour leader along with very good local informative guides. 3 changes in accommodation; Mumbai - Gordon House Hotel is excellent, well priced and only 1 street back from Gateway to India but the company changed to Fariyas Hotel, Mumbai which was been renovated as well as painted so very noisy, couldn't use the pool and scaffolding all around. Definitely not ideal. Our second night in Delhi was also cancelled at Jaypee Siddharth Hotel though privately booked and paid for months before the tour so had to find alternative accommodation while on the tour and they told the travel agents they were "closed for renovations" however the tour was booked and stayed there and no renovations were occuring. Hadoti Palace Hotel in Bundi looked nice and rooms were big but not clean especially the toilet and shower. Otherwise all hotels were very nice and rated accurately; cleaning the showers/washrooms would have helped with the mouldy smell but that is somewhat consistent in most countries. November is the start of wedding season in India which are very loud and noisy and have no time restrictions so be prepared for that if going at this time of year. Tour involves quite a number of days travelling in a bus/coach for 4 - 6 hours with a stop every 2 - 3 hours. Rest stops are OK at best with only snack food to purchase. Adjusting the departure time would have helped with timeframes as quite a few days we were getting lunch around 2 - 3 pm when hotel kitchens were closed. Definitely not enough free time for shopping on your own with organized evenings most nights or in a venue on the outside of towns. Toured the markets but they were only a walk through with the group and no time to stop and shop. Restaurants and food was amazing and no one was unwell on the trip. 2 days in Ranthambhore Park was too long and could have done in 1.5 days with more time in Agra. Overall a very good trip for myself and my father (aged 79).

What people love about India Tours

Very informative,a bit of a challenge ,had a great time.
Although I LOVED everything about this trip, I have to say that the experience was 10 times enhanced by our amazing CEO, Manvendra. He went above and beyond and truly made this the trip of a lifetime

Travel with Karuna

A mindful journey through India

IMG_8814.JPG

About Karuna करुणा

Karuna, which translates to “compassion”, in Hindi inspired two wanderers, Pritesh from India and Nicole from Canada, to cultivate a community of those who share the passion to travel consciously and sustainably. After travelling individually around India for four years by foot, tuk tuk, motorbike and buses, they met while wandering the streets of North India with their ideas and backpacks. The two of them continued to travel this astonishing country collectively for three years and Karuna emerged with the inspiration to bring awareness to natural and cultural heritage diversity of India through guided tours. The intention of the tours is to transform the mindset of mass tourism into travellers that dive deep into local cultures, food, languages and holidays, while enhancing the well-being of host communities. We do this by staying with families, instead of chain hotels, working alongside initiatives that empower locals and choose to travel in ways that leave the least environmental impact. We explore in ways that are beyond “tourist must see” spots and throw away the guide books leaving space for personal and community transformation.

6 Women Travel Groups Around India That Are A Perfect Gift For Your Mother

Photo of Disha Kapkoti

It's interesting to find varied styles of travel people have adopted for themselves. There's no denying the fact that travel is a trend and every single person is on the hunt for his/her own kin to take to that dream vacation. And women travel groups are icing on the cake.

From biker brotherhoods to tour groups for senior citizens, come to think of it, there's someone for everyone. ;)

Some of you might remember the Spring Queening episode of a popular sitcom Girls, where Hannah goes to a women's retreat with her mother. It made me do a quick search for women tour groups , which could help women make that first breakaway trip.

Photo of 6 Women Travel Groups Around India That Are A Perfect Gift For Your Mother 1/8 by Disha Kapkoti

( Space for personal views : I might run away from travelling in groups – with men or women – but I do understand that it's a genuine need for women who feel more comfortable travelling with other like-minded women. To each their own. )

Here's a list of some fabulous women-only travel clubs that offer regional as well as international tours to women.

Ladies, here you go with the best Indian women travel groups!

#1. The WOW Club

Women on Wanderlust was founded by Sumitra, an experienced traveller and a writer who started WOW as an attempt to promote the 'woman traveller phenomenon'. For female travellers who find it hard to find travel partners, this group takes them beyond the trouble of venturing out alone, paying the dreaded 'single supplement' through cost sharing and most importantly, helps build a community of women travellers.

WOW pioneered the all-women travel concept in 2005 in India, eleven years ago, when the concept of women-only travel groups was totally unheard of. WOW does over a hundred trips every year to 50 destinations in India & overseas.

Click here to visit The WOW Club's official website.

#2. Women Travelling Together

Women Travelling Together is an organisation founded in 1997 by Debra Asberry in her 40s who wanted to travel but not alone. Women with a passionate interest in travelling were interviewed by her for the next 7 months to create a group that caters to the needs of women travellers. Over the years, WTT has created a successful tour model for female travellers, which is different from tours for couples and other travel groups.

#3. F5 Escapes

Why the concept of women travel? Malini Gowrishankar, the founder of F5 Escapes, perfectly explains the need for this venture.

" To set the context, I was not blessed with the natural ability and courage to travel by myself... The strength was acquired slowly, one travel experience at a time, especially when with other like-minded women for company. Even eagles need a push – those born into traditional mindsets need some handholding to embrace the idea of taking space for themselves. "

From Kashmir to Pondicherry, Malini now offers nationwide tours to women travel groups through well-researched itineraries, safety checks and a team of experienced tour leads.

#4. Women On Clouds Club

WOC Girls have been travelling around parts of India, Bhutan and Turkey and every tour group comes back with stories more enthralling than the other. WOC caters to small women's groups with itineraries planned to the T and perfect organisation of food, stay and travel for women travellers who join these groups coming from all walks of life.

#5. Girls On The Go

Norway, Mongolia, Bhutan, Spain, New Zealand and Antarctica, GOTG has done it all with a bunch of fabulous girls who have the zeal to explore. Without the need to drag along your busy friends, this group gives you the freedom to travel across the globe. The only requirements are a young heart and a curious mind.

#6. The Wander Girls

The Wander Girls began with the aim to help travel become a medium for the personal and professional growth of women. TWG tours are designed by combining history, culture, music and food. Every group is accompanied by an experienced TWG team member who would take care of all the nitty-gritties, helping you have that carefree holiday you had always desired.

And if you are a woman willing to travel in the company of your own kind, then there couldn’t be better groups to be a part of.

Here’s a list of some of the most popular female travel groups in India:

1. Ladakhi Women’s Travel

travel group india

If you’ve been dreaming of visiting Ladakh, you would love to read about Ladakhi Women’s Travel, founded by women from the region itself. Led by one of Ladakh’s most accomplished female tour guides – Thinlas Chorol, the firm specialises in homestay experiences so visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture in the truest sense. Plus, this system also helps the women running the homestays in Ladakh, particularly in its far-flung and obscured areas as they also get to meet new people from the cities. Among the places you can see with the group are the Sham region, Hemis National Park, monasteries, and the iconic Nubra Valley.

2. Women On Wanderlust (WOW Club)

travel group india

Founded by Sumitra Senapaty in 2005, the Wow Club is another travel group, which believes in the off-the-beaten path ideology. So they mostly stay away from the popular, and often-clichéd places and explore the less-famous ones. However, the well-known destinations are not totally overlooked, with plenty of those being covered in their excursions. Some of their most memorable experiences are dining with a Vietnamese family, snorkelling lessons in the Maldives, tasting the finest Bordeaux in Bordeaux, camping in Ladakh, listening to soothing Sufi music in Jodhpur and dancing the energetic Tango in Argentina.

3. Girls On The Go

travel group india

Founded in the year 2008 by 25 women, this travel group takes its stuff seriously. Whether it is zooming on the much-famed Leh–Manali Highway, trekking on the rugged highlands of Mongolia, living e reverie, watching the awe-inspiring Northern Lights in the Arctic region or even walking with penguins in Antarctica, you can do it all with them. Apart from organising group tours, they also cater to women who wish to travel solo. Their other achievements include helping a wheelchair-bound woman enjoy scuba diving and taking a 90-year-old to the Arctic. So just approach Girls On The Go with an unrealistic trip idea, which most firms would stay away from, and they will make it a reality.

Two men realised how important it is for the fairer sex to be independent in order to really grow as a person and so, they founded Jugni to help women go on that trip they’ve always desired. With Jugni, you can go as a group as well as solo, with the trip organisers catering to your every specification. With no more than 14 persons in a group, women feel like they are out with friends, rather than a bunch of strangers. Travellers are free to customise their experience, and what they get is absolute bliss.

5. Wandering Jane

travel group india

After 10 years in a corporate job, Garima and Akshat thought “ Enough of this madness. Let’s do something more meaningful ”, and thus, Wandering Jane was born. Apart from organising group trips, they do all they can to help women travel solo and safely and enjoy every bit of their vacation. Their travel guides are picked basis their knowledge about a particular place and the type of trip. What probably sets them apart from other groups in their league is that they not only organise trips, but also offer courses in numerous adventure activities, such as skiing, scuba diving, mountaineering and surfing.

All about Wandering Jane can be found here .

 6. Chindi Safar

travel group india

Who says travelling has to be costly, especially for women? At Chindi Safar, they make sure that women globetrotters can have the time of their life without it being too hard on their pocket. Even though their excursions are budget-friendly, they include a lot of fun activities like treasure hunts, parties and dance workshops. Plus, they offer a carefully-curated menu, certified trekking guides and the option of travelling first and paying later. Their upcoming excursions would be to different places in Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, so whether you like warmth or cool breeze and snow, they have something lined up for you.

7. Wovoyage

travel group india

Offering group as well as solo travels, Wovoyage is one truly international all-women travel group. Operating out of three bases – in Delhi, Tokyo and Sydney, the group brings together Indian as well as overseas globetrotters, entrepreneurs, travel guides and others associated with the travel industry. Set out on a fixed itinerary tour or get one tailor made for yourself, the choice is yours. With the group, you can head to any of the popular tourist destinations in India like Rajasthan, McLeodganj, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Goa, while the list of international destinations include Japan, Greece, Bhutan, Thailand and Bali.

Visit the official website of Wovoyage here .

8. Wander Womaniya

travel group india

Your girl gang not up for a trip, but you really want to go? Wander Womaniya is here to take care of you with their meticulously planned solo trips for females. From the serene beaches of Thailand or Bali to the snowy peaks of the Himalayas, they invite women for a memorable fling with nature and excitement. You won’t find their trip to be uber-luxurious as they want you to enjoy the actual destination instead of staying back at your extravagant hotel. This is why they accommodate you at semi-luxurious, boutique hotels, campsites and homestays.

Details of Wander Womaniya are available here

If any of you women have been looking for a memorable travel experience, wherein you can be yourself and not think about anything else, these are the travel groups you can approach. Happy Tripping!

Local travel group in Kerala launches India's first solar-powered air-conditioned bus

K ANNUR: India’s first solar-powered air-conditioned local bus service has been launched in Kannur, offering passengers a comfortable travel experience amid the prevalent hot weather in the region. Sangeet Travels operates the bus along the Kannur-Kandyparam route, providing relief to those travelling between Kannur town and the District Hospital with five daily trips.

Satheesh Chemmarathil, the owner of Sangeet Travels, told TNIE that the idea to install solar-powered air conditioning in his bus had been on his mind for a long time. “As a dealer for a Make In India startup AC company that uses BLDC technology to reduce energy consumption by 70 per cent, I wanted to implement this in my bus. From January 2024, one of our newly launched buses has an air conditioner powered by three solar panels mounted on the roof,” said Satheesh.

Satheesh obtained special permission from the Kannur RTO to make modifications to the bus, enabling the installation of air conditioning equipment. “Since the AC operates on solar power, there’s no connection to the engine, eliminating additional fuel usage or pollution. Moreover, we are not charging passengers extra for this service,” he added.

“Since this was the first time that the technology was used in a local bus, there were some mistakes. We have corrected all the minute mistakes we found and now the technology is 90 per cent complete. I am getting great responses from the passengers. Since it is a local service, the majority of the passengers are commoners. We are experiencing extremely hot weather conditions. So I thought this would be the best thing I could do for the people. Many other bus operators have also been contacting me seeking help in installing the system in their buses as well,” he added.

The initial investment for the solar system and air conditioning in the bus was `5 lakh. In addition, Satheesh had previously introduced a GPS-based bus stop announcement system in his buses.
