Pinball FX – Williams Pinball: Star Trek: The Next Generation Review
After venturing into the Twilight Zone and then getting caught up in a Whirlwind , the latest Williams pinball table wants you to boldly go where no man has gone before – the Star Trek universe. That’s because Zen Studios have given the Williams Pinball: Star Trek: The Next Generation table the digital treatment for Pinball FX.
So let’s find out whether Star Trek: The Next Generation is going to live long and prosper in your Pinball FX library, or will lose your attention faster than you can say ‘beam me up, Scotty!’
The Star Trek: The Next Generation pinball machine first emerged in 1993 under the Williams brand. Based on the popular TV series of the same name, it was designed by Steve Ritchie, who previously devised famous tables such as Black Knight and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The concept on this particular table is for you to fight alongside Captain Picard against formidable foes including the Romulans, the Cardassians, and the Borg.
It gets off to a flyer with various awards handed out simply for launching the ball and, better yet, you can choose which one you want. Starting a mission immediately, locking a ball for future multiball possibilities, and cranking up the speed of the U.S.S. Enterprise to warp factor four, are all viable options. The coolest of those on offer gives you the ability to load the ball into one of two cannons situated upon the slingshots. As it rotates, the timing of the release to hit the highlight target is important and it’s satisfying to succeed.
There’s no doubt that this opening gambit already makes Star Trek: The Next Generation welcoming to even the most hopeless of Pinball FX players. Helping matters further are the main missions, which are activated by sending the ball towards a sinkhole. That’s all there is to it, so don’t worry about missing out on anything. Then you just have to follow the on-screen objectives to try and complete them, which is where the more skilful folk will thrive.
Not only is it easy to trigger features, but on top of that, scores obtained through completing fairly straightforward actions are very, very, generous. Increasing the warp factor via the outer loop lane is a sure-fire method to raise the points awarded for other activities. On my worst attempts, I achieved six figure sums, which is certainly beyond the high scores set on other tables, and it’s the kind of thing that will keep someone like me – bang average at pinball – coming back for more.
As it is a fairly old table, the missions themselves aren’t as exciting as those found in the modern day offerings, however that doesn’t mean you won’t have fun. They’re all space themed, naturally, and there’s even a battle simulation where you keep firing the ball out of the aforementioned cannons at specific targets. It’s perhaps the most enjoyable one, whereas an asteroid related one is not so good if you have the digital enhancements on because the asteroids look rubbish.
In fact, Star Trek: The Next Generation pinball seems better without the enhancements on the whole. Whichever you choose though, the audio is the same, featuring cool space sound effects and voiced lines from the actual actors of the TV show. I only recognised the legendary Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, but Brent Spiner (Data), Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher), Michael Dorn (Worf), and a few others can be heard too. The sound quality does suffer a tad due to being in its original form, but it’s still worth having for the added authenticity.
The overall layout is great thanks to a lengthy playfield, providing plenty of time for you to react as the ball heads back towards the main flippers. While most of the standup targets, bumpers, ramps and sinkholes are reachable through whacking the ball with the standard pair of flippers, a third one is in place for the tougher areas. It’s quite easy to get the hang of where everything is and understand what the purpose of each part is.
Ultimately, as an honorary Starfleet officer, I must tell the truth. Williams Pinball: Star Trek: The Next Generation for Pinball FX is pretty darn enjoyable and provides fun even for those unfamiliar with the source material. It’s easy to grasp, full of missions that are very on-brand, possesses authentic sounds and lets you go for massive high scores. The price is a bit steep however, so you’ll have to weigh up whether the original table is worth it considering the enhanced visuals are cheap looking.
I suggest you set the speed to warp factor nine and go buy Pinball FX – Williams Pinball: Star Trek: The Next Generation immediately!

Pinball Arcade: Star Trek: The Next Generation Reviewed
Farsight studios reaches for the stars.
By Peter Nolan-Smith
I was wrong. Oh so very wrong.
The first thing to notice when the player steps up to the table is the incredible detail of the table art. The centre of the game features a large overview of the USS Enterprise, while the remaineder is filled with knife wielding Klingons and Romulans peaking out at you from behind bumpers. Familiar images of button configurations from the ships futuristic computer light-up and flash information to the player.
Beyond the 2D art is the recreation of the physical objects that the player can interact with. The game is littered with small models of various alien spacecraft and even one of the Enterprise’s shuttles. Two large ball launchers sit near the bottom of the board and are used in the game frequently.
Nine separate actors lent their voice talents to the game’s audio track: Patrick Stewart, Steven Dorn, LeVar Burton and other lead members of the cast.
FarSight has a history of exceeding its fundraising goals and this game was no exception. The Kickstarter campaign asked for $45,000 to purchase licences for all likenesses, voices and Star Trek brands associated with the game and raised over $7,000 more.
The company says that any extra money goes into purchasing the licence for the next machine they digitize.
Replication process is a science that the company has honed to razor-sharp perfection. They purchase an original version of machine slated for digitization off the market, restore it to full working order, then proceed to dismantle it piece by piece, and creating an exact copy in a computer environment.
Star Trek: TNG is both fun and immersive, probably the best table I’ve played by FarSight. The game runs smoothly and is thoroughly enjoyable on a PC through Steam and even more so on smaller handheld devices.
There are ongoing problems with tracking the ball as it moves up the table. Other tables have struggled with this but Star Trek doesn’t see the camera move at all unless using one of the launchers. The game is particularly cluttered at the top and losing sight of the ball is common and irritating.
Though some small hiccups it is an all around awesome game that easily eats up the hours.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Pinball Machine
Star Trek: The Next Generation pinball machine is a widebody game, designed by Steve Ritchie and released in November 1993 by Williams Electronics. It was part of WMS’ SuperPin series (see also The Twilight Zone and Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure), and was based on the TV series. It is the only pinball machine that features three separate highscore-lists. Apart from the regular highscore-list and the buy-in-list, it also features a reminiscence to The Machine: Bride of Pin*Bot billionaires club. It is also the third pinball game overall based on the Star Trek franchise, following the 1979 pinball game by Bally, and the 1991 game by Data East (both based on the original series).
When a new ball is launched into the plunger, the player is given one of five launch awards, which is selected when the ball is fired. Unless otherwise noted, the ball is launched through the spiral ramp and into the lock hole (above the pop bumpers). Another ball is popped from the left scoop and onto the left inlanes.
Game Features:
Multiball, Kick Back Lane, Lane Change, Ramp(s), Spinner(s), Cellar Holes, Voice, Wide Body, More Than 2 Flippers, Turret Shooter

Lol, agreed
As a Trek fan with fond memories of playing this machine at a nearby video store in the ‘90s, and who has enjoyed Pinball FX on the PS4 for a while, I’m very glad to see this.
Omg, finally I can play this again! Find memories of playing this on a Sealink ferry (!!) across the English channel.
All hands, prepare for multi-ball.
Always struck me as odd they included the asymmetrical renegade Borg ship from Descent in this game. But a fun game nonetheless.
Me too, but it was the most current Borg ship at the time the game was produced
Right, but I imagine if someone were to design a TNG themed pinball table today from scratch, it’s probably gonna be based on “Best of Both Worlds,” isn’t it? Have a big cube in the middle with maybe a Locutus head with a laser pointer.
Hey, Zen, you can make that table too while you’re at it. You have my permission. ;-)
It sure looks cool! But… I want a TOS pinball machine!
There were two tables based on TOS produced by Bally in 1979 and Data East in 1991. They’ve never been recreated legally for PCs or phones. However, fans have recreated the tables for Visual Pinball on the PC, if you want to go searching for those.
Also, Interplay released a video game called Star Trek Pinball for DOS back in 1998, which was basically three of their previous tables rethemed to classic Trek. It’s still available on various abandonware sites, if you can get it to run on your Windows PC.
My dad bought this machine a long time ago and still has it in working order. Call me crazy – I think that music is actually in the game. It definitely has music that’s more iconic TNG, but I have a weird memory of hearing that music while shooting the ball out of one of the launchers – or maybe selecting a mission? Either way – neat that it’s coming out digitally!
As an owner of this actual pinball machine (in addition to my other pinball which is of my other favorite TV show…Twilight Zone :) ), this does look very cool indeed. I have Pinball FX on my desktop and certainly can recommend the program for playing pinballs if you don’t have the space or want to put in the effort to maintain the actual pinballs yourself (which can be challenging sometimes). It’s also fun as you can compete remotely with other players.
This particular pinball table is truly one of the best ever, designed by the legendary Steve Ritchie who is still actively designing pinball games to this day. He also designed the Star Trek pinball that came out a few years back for the Kelvin movies which is also a very fun game, even for someone like myself who, shall we say, was and is not at all fond of the new movies (and leave it at that ;) ) .

This is a great table. So much fun to play. If you like Start Trek this is an inta buy! The table plays great, graphics see to be downscales a bit to make it run smooth but the gameplay makes up for it. Here is a full review I did on YouTube of the table to see it in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-Nosg6M3R0
Hi Brad! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review for Williams Pinball Star Trek: The Next Generation. We appreciate your feedback about the graphics and we'll definitely pass it along to our team. Thank you also for sharing your YouTube review – we'll be sure to check it out. Live long and prosper!
I've compared this table to OTG and this onboard version. I've played it IRL at Vegas's Pinball Hall of Fame and other physical arcades. It's my favorite table of all time.
Good Stuff: The haptics and SSF are spot on. You *feel* the ball. Well done.
Bad Stuff: The table graphics are crazy flat, with no dynamic lighting effects. Flat table graphic is low-res. There is flipper lag.
Assessment: Zen Studios let us down and kicked over a lazy emulation.
Hi there, thank you for your review of Star Trek: The Next Generation. We appreciate your feedback and are happy to hear that you enjoyed the haptics and SSF. We apologize for any disappointment with the graphics and flipper lag. We'll be sure to pass this along to our team for future improvements. Thank you for playing and sharing your thoughts with us. Keep flipping!
I did not expect to like this version as much as I do - Looks and sounds fantastic, although the table does not appear to be true 4K (the sound with the SSF kit might be the best yet for the 4KP). The call-outs are fantastic too (recorded by original cast). Truly addictive game: hard enough to be challenging, fun enough to make you coming back for more.
There is still wisp of flipper lag (miles better the when ADDAMS FAMILY first dropped) that did not affect my play, but your mileage might vary. Over-all, an excellent addition to the 4KP lineup, and pretty much a must-buy for ST:TNG fans. Check out my video review for a more in-depth look at the positives & negatives: https://youtu.be/JDVIkAV10YE?feature=shared
Thank you for your detailed review of the Star Trek: The Next Generation. We are happy to hear that you were pleasantly surprised by the game and that it has the addictive quality you look for in a pinball game. We appreciate your feedback on the 4K graphics and the sound, and we agree that the call-outs by the original cast add a special touch. We apologize for any minor flipper lag you experienced, but we are glad it did not affect your overall enjoyment of the game. Thank you for your support and for recommending this game to ST:TNG fans. We will definitely check out your video review. Happy playing!
Flipper lag obviously. Resolution on table very poor. Operating legend is illegible.
Hi Bill, we apologize for the inconvenience you experienced with our Star Trek: The Next Generation game. We are constantly working on improving the flipper lag and resolution on the table. If you have any further feedback or issues, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Thank you for your understanding.
I'm excited for when this table is fixed but it and the other Star Trek ones are currently unplayable due to input lag. Hopefully they fix it soon but I'm surprised they are even offering it with the current state of things.
Hi, thank you for bringing this to our attention. We apologize for the inconvenience and are actively working on resolving the input lag issue for the Star Trek tables. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Thank you for your support.
