Daringbadi: Everything You Need to Know and Best Resort to Stay

Daringbadi: the kashmir of orissa.

Daringbadi is known as Kashmir of Orissa for a reason. Orissa is famous for the sea, sun, and sands. It does not seem really likely that there might be a hill station in this state. However, this is a lesser-known spot and a hill station here, which receives even an occasional snowfall in winter.

This place is in the Kandhamal district of Odisha, at an altitude of 3000 ft.(915 meters) above sea level. Lush green valley, dense mountain forests filled with birdsongs, various exotic plants, and plantations- this offbeat destination is a hidden gem.

The people who have visited this place fondly refers to it as the “Kashmir of Odisha”.

What to See in Daringbadi:

There are a number of amazing locations spread throughout the valley. Nature is abundant and unbound in here. The major points of interestare as follows:

Doluri River:

It is a small stream that flows through the valley. There are some small falls on it, which are magnificent in the monsoon. The serene river banks are popular as picnic spots during the sunny winter weekends.

Belghar Village:

It is an internationally known eco-village. Located on the hill-top, this hamlet is surrounded by a dense forest and a tranquil place. The surrounding mountains with decreasing height make it a good sport for paragliding. You can see elephants and other animals on the way to this place.

Hill Viewpoint:

This is the most famous vantage point in this valley, from here, the tourists can get a 360 degree of the whole Daringbadi and the surrounding area. This is a must-visit place in here.

Plantations:

The moderate climate for the whole year here is perfect for the growth of Coffee plants. The Coffee garden here is maintained by the Soil Conservation and Forest Department of Odisha. Furthermore, there is a black pepper plantation also. Both of these places are major tourist attractions. You need to take prior permission to enter these places.

Belghar Sanctuary:

This is one of the major elephant sanctuaries in the hills of Odisha. It is a thick tropical forest, with dense vegetation and a huge variety of flora and fauna. If you are lucky, you can get a glimpse of the elusive wildlife. You can also walk into the forest to meet the Bonda tribe, one of the most primitive tribes of India.

How to reach Daringbadi

Daringbadi can be reached in 3 ways – by Railways, Roadways, and Airways.

By Railways: The nearest station is Behrampur, situated approximately 120 Kms away. A private vehicle easily takes you to there within 3 hours.

By Roadway: From Bhubaneswar, this place is 251 KMS and frequently connected by bus services or you can hire private vehicles as well.

By Airways: Biju Patnaik airport is the nearest one. The distance between the two is 246 KMS and takes around 5 hours 23 minutes by a private vehicle.

Daringbadi General Weather

Just like a classic hill station destination, the place has pleasant weather throughout the year. For instance, the average temperature in the summer months does not go above 23°C in general.

Winter nights and early mornings are chilly. You will find crystalized dew drops on trees, blades of grasses, cars, and houses when the temperature falls below 0°C at night. These snow, frozen dew, and slits are the reason behind comparing this place to Kashmir.

Summer months are a neutral time to visit the place as it provides some recess from the scorching heat owing to its height. On the other hand, if you wish to experience the amazing place in its full glory, plan your visit around November end to January. Furthermore, the monsoon season transforms the place in a verdure paradise, in spite of the bad condition of the hilly roads. This resort is located amidst a load of greenery and sunshine . The owners have chosen a small hilltop for the same, that allows a panoramic view of the jungle and the hills around.

Nandkanan Zoo and the Safari were awesome, not to miss. Udaygiri, Raja- Rani Temple, Lingraj Temple were beautiful. The city is less crowded unlike Mumbai and that itself was pleasing. Could taste famous lassi, Dalma Chawal,Channi Poda, etc. Shopping of Orissa Saries and other traditional articles was good. Most important attractions were Konark Sun Temple and Darshan at Jagganath Puri Temple. Beaches in Puri were good.

I have visited Puri many times but my latest trip to Puri was from 26 - 30th May 2016 Apart from the stay at Hotel NILADRI (which was a nightmare!!!), everything was good. Starting from trip to Chilika with dolphin watching and sea mouth visit, to Nandankanan safari, visiting Pipili for shopping nice applique designed bedsheets and crafts.Please bargain with cabs as they might demand a high rate. For Chilika round trip - around 1000 - 1200 INR is a good deal for an Indica / swift Dezire. (Its a Half day tour) For dhaulgiri+Udaygiri+Khandagiri+Linga-Raj Temple+ Nandankanan+Konark&Chandrabhaga Beach / Pipili&Raghunathpur - around - 2200 - 2400 INR (Its a whole day tour.) Visit to Sri Jagannath temple has always been awesome. Special Khajas from the temple are mouthwatering. Auto fare to Jagannath Temple is around 80-100 (one way). PLEASE NOTE: the temple's Garva Griha is currently closed for next one month for renovation. you can view the Bigraha's from a distance though. The sea beach near swargadwar road and infornt of PURI hotel is too much crowded and really full with food vendors resulting in pollution and deafening noise and smell of rotten fish . Its really becoming a mess and the Orissa Govt. should immediately pay attention to this matter.. to keep the sea beach clean. Comparatively the beach after swargadwar more (Around hotel new sea hawk and Sri Hari etc.) is much more clean and nice.

Sun Temple. Sun Temple. Sun Temple. LOVELY! Visit when the light is full, to enjoy the hidden intricacies of the stone sculptures..It's everything and more you read about in school history books! A cab from Bhubaneshwar (or Puri) takes about 1.5 hours to get to Konarka and the road is generally bumpy (with a lot of speedbreakers between Puri & Konarka). There's not much to do or see beyond the Sun Temple, and clean, healthy (or even hot) food choices practically non-existent. Good to pack a few snacks or a meal before you head out. The Chandrabhaga beach is the other attraction here but the sea in Orissa generally tends to get rough and highly treacherous, so be careful. BUT don't miss out on the local delicacy (a sweet one!) known as "Pheni" - crispy, sugary delights made of flour, folded into several delightful layers and dipped in sugar syrup - sold near the temple. Pick up the ones from the bottom of the pile, to avoid those touched by flies! Don't let the general atmospherics turn you away...

Bhubaneswar - a land of history, temples, and architecture. Owing its splendid architecture to the ancient rulers during the Ganga dynasty, Orissa boasts of some of the most careful and arduous sculptures found in India. The folklore and history (sometimes ambiguous) surrounding the temples provide them a strong significance in religious as well as scientific realms. The architectural marvel that is the sun temple, a huge chariot on wheels dedicated to the sun god, showcases the understanding of trigonometry and even magnetism. The story goes that a magnetic rod was used to complete construction of the main 'vimana' which centuries later started hindering navigation of Portuguese ships driving them to remove the rod, which caused its subsequent collapse. The Sun temple, Lingraj temple, Puri Jagannath temple are must visits. The temples can get a bit crowded but Getting around Bhubaneswar is easiest if you travel via public buses. They're clean and not too crowded and connect to most places. Cab tours charge an exorbitant price for relatively short tours. There are quite a few night parties on the beach during full moons that solo travelers can also attend. Word of caution - steer clear of solicitors. They come in the form of guides, drivers, and worst of all, priests. Don't go near them, don't entertain any conversation, and be very careful about giving them any money. While some of them try to make an honest living, most of them are crooks who just want your money in the form of donations . However, Orissa, in all its beauty, is a great place to visit. It's hot and humid owing to its coastal location. Keep your sun-screen handy, drink plenty of water and stay safe.

On the last two days of August 2023, we took upon ourselves a challenge. We embarked on our first ever road trip with Tukixu, our two month old daughter, much against the wish of our elders for obvious reasons! As daunting as it appeared while planning the trip, the execution I must admit was way smoother while the joy of returning home in one piece was unparalleled. We tactfully selected such a place, where we could relax amid nature, digitally detox and respond to the call of our round the clock parental duty. Shimlipal National Park it was! The forest is closed during the monsoons which meant no sightseeing. Connectivity was out of bounds which meant you could automatically be off your phones and the @lulung_aranyanivas resort was tucked right in the middle of the forest, beside the Palpala river making it the best place to relax amid nature. The staff greeted us with folded palms and escorted us to a lovely riverside cottage which we would call home for the next two days. The next two days went by in the blink of a eye. As I write this post from my home in Kolkata, I am already missing the serenity of the place. After ages we read a book, stopped scrolling our phones mindlessly, stopped consuming digital content, slept for a longer stretch, so did our baby, sat idle staring into the dense moist forest and sipping coffee, raising a toast to parenthood with lime juice, enjoying a quick dip in the pool, taking an evening stroll to the nearby river bed, gulping down hearty meals in the backdrop of two hourly feeding, diaper changing and rocking our infant to sleep. This was a new kind of holiday which we experienced and would not give it up for anything. :) Our first trip was done and dusted and emerging victorious, we are now excited for many more to come. Satapada is located at a distance of 48 KM from temple town of Puri. It is nearly 100 KM from Bhubaneswar. NH-203 A connects Satapada to Puri. This place is located by the side of Chilika and close to the mouth opening of Chilika lake to sea. The main attraction at Satapada is its Chilika boating and Dolphin watch. Tourist come to Satapada for a boat ride in Chilika lake and to watch Dolphins.

Visit Konark Temple

The UNESCO has listed the Sun Temple as a World Heritage Site. The structure of the temple resembles a colossal chariot, with 24 wheels, pulled by seven straining horses, and has a three-tiered pyramidal roof topped off by a fine spire. Along with visiting the Sun temple you can visit the museum of the archeological survey. The Konark beach is very much picturesque and one gets the beautiful sight of sunrise over here. One can also enjoy sunbathing here. Konark beach festival is very much famous among international tourists.

Visit Budhhist Circuit Ratnagiri

Ratnagiri, lying in the Jajpur district in the state of Odisha, is a famous Buddhist religious destination. The spot contains many significant Buddhist sculptures scattered around in the hillside. Some excavations have related the history of Ratnagiri to 6 th Century AD and the Gupta Dynasty. According to an excavation of a vast monastery at Ratnagiri, it dates back to the Mahayana sect and the kings including Ashoka and others of the Gupta dynasty propagated Buddhism in this region. Several other clues of Buddhism – like the Monastery, Stupas, Chaityas, etc. are found in the region. Ratnagiri is known as a remarkable destination of learning for the Budhism of Tantric cult - known as Vajrayana. As hinted by Tibetan Buddhist texts, Kalchakrayana also bloomed considerably in the region.

Visit Peace Pagoda, Dhauli

Dhauli Giri or Shanti Stupa, also known as Peace Pagoda, is a Buddhist structure built jointly in 1972 by the Japan Buddha Sangh and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangh. Situated on the opposite hill of Dhauli Giri, it was built through the Indo-Japanese collaboration.You can find splendid Edicts of Ashoka embossed on a mass of rock in Dhauli, beside the way to the hill summit. It is believed that Dhauli hill was the battlefield of the Kalinga War. Numerous artifacts tell us about the urban settlement at this place in the 3 rd century B.C.

Khandagiri & Udaragiri Caves, Bhubaneswar

Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves once served as a residence of Jain monks; the whole construction is said to have happened during the rule of Kalinga King Karavela. Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves are rock cut caves excavated in two adjacent hills that rise abruptly from vast expanse of barren land. Both the hills stand separated only by a narrow road. Udayagiri hill which is 135 feet tall was earlier called Kumari Parvata whereas 118 feet high Khandagiri hill was known as Kumara Parvata. There are 33 rock cut caves in all. 18 are in Udayagiri cave whereas 15 are in Khandagiri caves.

Visit Temples of Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar is rightly called the “City Of Temples” . With more than 700 temples, this capital of Odhisha attracts devotees from not just the country, but even from the outside. Podo Pitha(Spiced, Rice & Coconut)

This cake is baked with a lot of twist and is miles away from the cake which we normally eat. It's not easy to prepare either. It has a long list of ingredients and takes forever to bake. That's the reason people prefer to cook it once in a year. Most prepared during Raja festival (Swing Festival) in Odisha, Podo Pitha can be rightly called as the Godfather of all Pithas. Podo Pitha is traditionally prepared in a clay oven overnight, but now people bake in their oven to ease the process a little. With a slight burnt top, little spice of cardamom at each bite and that crunch of coconut and nuts along with a caramelized jaggery is sure to make you drool.

Aah Dalma! You just can't get enough of dal, can you? However, this staple food comes with a unique twist when in Odisha. It is made with roasted moong dal without any onion or garlic. A few regular spices along with a cup of veggies are added to it to give it a lip-smacking flavour. Common veggies include Pumpkin, Plantain, Yam and Papaya, which work like magic on your overall health. Mostly eaten with rice, this finger-licking meal will more than satiate your appetite.

Pakhala Bhata(Water Rice)

Pakhala Bhata is the daily lunch for almost every household in Odisha during summers. It is prepared by soaking cooked rice in water and sour curd. Typically left overnight, and often served with potatoes, fried fish, papad and Badi choora, which is dried and nut-like urad and black gram. This fermented rice is the perfect dish to beat the heat and refreshes you from within. 20 th March is celebrated as Pakhala Dibasa(Universal Pakhala Day) by all Odias to welcome summer season with Odisha's traditional food.

Dahi vada-Aloo dum

Yet another popular street food that we see after Gupchup in Odisha, is Dahi vada and Aloo dum. Go out at even 5 in the morning and you can see thela walas with their big pots of Dahi Vada and smaller pots filled with Aloo Dum. While everywhere else, Dahi Vada and Aloo Dum are considered to be two separate dishes, Odisha offers a distinctive blend of the both. The relishing taste of Dahi Vadas carefully neutralises the spiciness of Aloo Dum, giving the taste that every Odia craves for.

This classic Odia dish is a fried or boiled vegetable curry that slurps down your tongue with every spoon. With a blend of raw Papaya, Potato, Tomato and Brinjal, the dish is nothing less compared to any other healthy food. As the recipe is low on spices and high on greens, it is most commonly eaten for a healthy diet. You may want the dish to be mildly sauteed with milk and spices for an extra taste.

Ghanta in Odia means mixed. This dish is prepared by mixing a variety of vegetables and is mostly enjoyed during festivals. It's very high in nutrition and has got a typical taste which can be enjoyed with either Rice or Chapatti along with lentils soup.

Manda & Enduri Pitha

This is the steamed version of the Pitha. While Manda Pitha is prepared mostly during festivals, Enduri Pitha is reserved for Prathamashtami, a festival celebrated to pray for long life and well being of the first child in a family. Manda Pitha is basically made up of semolina stuffed with sweet filling. Enduri is made up of rice flour filled with sweet filling and steamed within turmeric leaves.

Indian Tourism Industry to Generate $24 Billion in 2024 – India Report

Travel and tourism industry accounted for around 6% of India's GDP in 2022. The country has therefore been focusing on boosting tourism.

The travel and tourism industry in India is projected to generate revenue of nearly $24 billion in 2024, according to industry promotions body India Brand Equity Foundation. At an estimated annual growth rate of 9.6% between 2024 and 2028, the industry is also expected to reach a market volume of $34.25 billion by 2028. 

Revenue trend in India: In 2023, the tourism industry recorded a revenue of about $20 billion, according to Statista . Hotels accounted for the largest share of revenue last year. This year, however, this is expected to shift and package holidays are likely to be the biggest revenue generator in 2024. According to an ANI report , package holidays market is expected to reach 65 million travelers by 2028. 

India’s efforts to boost tourism: The country has been focusing on boosting tourism, and has announced 100% foreign direct investment in tourism-related ventures in order to facilitate growth of the sector. Efforts are also being made to preserve heritage sites in India while creating quality tourism infrastructure to enhance visitor experience. 

The road, rail, and air transportation infrastructure is also being improved. New highways, indigenous superfast trains , and regional airports are being concurrently developed across the country to make travel more convenient and inland destinations more accessible.

Radisson Opens First Hotel in Odisha

Radisson Hotel Group has announced the opening of Pramod Lands End Resort, a member of Radisson Individuals in Gopalpur, Odisha. The 100-room resort marks the group’s entry into Odisha. Radisson’s newly appointed area senior vice president for South Asia Nikhil Sharma said that Gopalpur has untapped tourism potential, and the company’s move to open a property in the location is part of its focus on tier 2 and 3 cities in India. 

Radisson has more than 160 operational and developing hotels, with over 50% of its portfolio located in tier 2 and 3 markets. In 2023, the company signed 21 properties , and is especially focusing on key spiritual destinations and inland locations to gain from the first-mover advantage. 

Fly91 Expands Network to Agatti, Jalgaon

India’s newest airline Fly91 is set to add two more destinations to its network this week, taking its operations to six destinations. Starting Thursday, the airline will fly between Goa and Agatti, Lakshadweep. It will also commence flights between Goa, Jalgaon and Hyderabad on April 18. 

The budget airline commenced its operations last month and is currently flying between four destinations. It aims to enhance regional connectivity in India and has plans to expand its network to 50 cities over the next five years. For this, the airline is planning to induct 30 aircraft to its fleet. 

ITC Hotels Open Storii Solan in Himachal Pradesh

ITC Hotels has announced the opening of Storii by ITC Hotels, The Kaba Retreat, Solan in Himachal Pradesh. The boutique property currently has 22 rooms and suites, with six cottages to open soon. 

Storii by ITC Hotels serves experiential travelers. The company is focusing on expanding the brand as CEO Anil Chadha believes that it is quickly becoming a preferred brand in the segment. With the addition of the Solan property, four hotels are operational under the brand. More Storii hotels are set to come up in Kolkata, Rishikesh, Manali, Prayagraj, and Kufri as it is aiming to enhance its presence in leisure destinations.

Delhi Airport’s Conversion of Terminal T2 to All-International Delayed Till Next Year

The conversion of Delhi airport’s terminal T2 into an all-international terminal is delayed till April 2025, according to a Times of India report . The airport has three terminals of which T1 and T2 are fully domestic, while T3 handles domestic as well as international traffic. With T1 undergoing an expansion to double its capacity to 40 million passengers, the airport operators decided to convert T2 into an all-international terminal temporarily to better handle international traffic.

The initial plan was to begin the conversion of the terminal in July or August this year , after the expansion of domestic terminal T1 becomes operational in June. This would close T2 for a few months. However, the authorities have now decided to postpone the conversion work until after winter, as they want all terminals to be operational during the season. This is to avoid a repeat of winter last year when a key low-visibility runway was shut for repairs during the foggy season and led to delays. 

EaseMyTrip Subsidiary Opens Hotel in McLeod Ganj

Spree Hospitality, a subsidiary of online travel company EaseMyTrip, has announced the opening of ZiP By Spree Hotels Bella Heights in McLeod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh. The boutique property is a part of Spree Hospitality’s portfolio of more than 30 hotels. 

The company focuses on boutique and mid-market segments, while operating full-service properties across India. It was acquired by EaseMyTrip in 2021.

A record-breaking year is projected for Travel and Tourism.

Despite the plethora of daunting challenges faced by the hospitality industry over the past few years, the World Travel & Tourism Council is projecting a record-breaking year for Travel & Tourism in 2024, with the sector’s global economic contribution set to reach an all-time high of $11.1 trillion. According to the global tourism body’s 2024 Economic Impact Research, Travel & Tourism will contribute an additional $770 billion over its previous record, thereby solidifying its stature as a global economic engine, generating one in every 10 dollars worldwide. As the global sector surpasses its pre-pandemic prosperity, 142 of 185 countries are expected to outperform previous national records.

An important sign of this economic prosperity has been the opening of new resorts and hotels throughout the world, along with major renovations. To follow are several examples.

The renovation includes refreshed, expansive guestrooms and suites.

Newport Harbor Island Resort , Rhode Island

Newport Harbor Island Resort, the sole accommodations on Goat Island, is set to open at the end of April following a $50 million renovation. The renovation marks a new era for the former-Gurney’s property, comprised of refreshed, expansive guestrooms and suites, contemporary Spa, re-concepted culinary experiences, meeting spaces and 22-slip marina. Much of the art in the rooms and throughout the hotel was commissioned from local artists, while soft goods were hand-crafted by various New England weavers’ guilds. Instead of focusing on the ubiquitous Gilded Era and sailing communities of Newport, the design team chose to focus on the inherent simplicity of coastal life. Guests and locals will be invited to cozy up in the property’s upgraded culinary outlets, including its full-service restaurant 1639, Torpedo Bar and Lounge, the lobby’s The Bakery and the beloved Pineapple Club.

The resort boasts 70 exquisitely designed guest rooms and suites.

TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Labuan Bajo , Indonesia

La Vista at Cameron House , Scotland

Cameron House, the five-star resort on Loch Lomond, Scotland, opened La Vista, a brand new restaurant. La Vista will serve authentic Italian cuisine and boasts panoramic views of the loch. Formerly The Boat House, the acclaimed resort has invested $2 million in transforming the lochside restaurant into a modern, light and airy dining space with a 138-cover restaurant, informal Mercato with a dining area for 50 guests and a private dining room for up to 24 people. An al fresco terrace launching in the summer will provide an additional 120 covers. Open seven days a week, from breakfast to dinner, Head Chef, Mark Pawsey’s main menu celebrates authentic Italian cuisine and features dishes rooted in traditional recipes executed with modern flair. The menu is divided into small aperitivo plates and cicchetti, larger signature mains, handmade pastas and wood-fired pizzas cooked in a Valoriani oven.
