A List of the Top Missionary Trips to Africa
Missions / February 11, 2020 by Julia Oates
During my high school years, I had the opportunity to visit Uganda, Africa, for two different mission trips. The time I spent in Africa lit a passion in my heart for missions. I was able to experience a new culture and get a small taste of what life on the mission field is like.
Recently, I had a friend ask me about my trips to Uganda. She wanted to find an organization that she could partner with to go on a mission trip to Africa. I helped her find different organizations she could use to take a trip. This is what I found while researching mission trips to Africa.
1. Experience Mission
Experience Mission offers mission trips to countries around the world, including in South Africa. They offer mission trips to Cape Town and Pretoria, South Africa year-round. For Experience, they want people who go on a mission trip through them to build relationships.
They are less focused on the agenda and more focused on the mission team building relationships while they are they. They also want members of the mission team to have the opportunity to hear other people’s stories and have the opportunity to share their testimony as well.
When teams do projects, such as building a school, they involve the local people. This allows the mission team to be working alongside the people in the community. This is one-way Experience is working to build relationships while on a short term mission trip.
Activities while serving in South Africa could include:
- Leading a children’s ministry program, preparing lesson materials for a preschool
- Leading a school classroom
- Helping sort clothing and food items
- Serving alongside homeless men and women in Pretoria
You can learn more about ministry opportunities here . Experience mission is giving people of all ages the opportunity to experience a short-term mission trip in Africa and other places around the world.
Live your mission. -Experince Mission’s Moto
2. Arise Africa
Arise Africa is working to bring the Gospel to Zambia, Africa. They do this by helping support people in the community. Here are a few ways Arise Africa is working to help people in Zambia:
- Arise homes – A safe and loving place for children without parents to live
- Christian schools – Arise is planting schools around Zambia to help provide education to the children in Zambia.
- Feeding program – A program for children in local schools which provides them with healthy meals.
- School supplies – Arise helps to supply schools with chairs, chalkboards, notebooks, and more.
They also offer mission trips to Zambia. They typically offer two-week mission trips year-round. People ages 5+ are welcome to join a trip. All people under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Each trip has a different focus. For example, one trip may be focused on painting projects whereas another is focused on working in a school or putting on a VBS for children. You can learn more about current mission trips and what the focus of the trip will be here .
If you are unable to attend a mission trip but you would still like to help support Arise Africa’s mission, you could consider becoming a child sponsor. By sponsoring a child, you are helping to provide a child with an education, meals, clothing, medical care, and a Christian environment. You can learn more about sponsoring a child here .
Arise Africa is an organization committed to serving and partnering with the people in Zambia. You can be apart of what God is doing in Zambia by visiting them on a short term mission trip. Arise Africa is making the name of Jesus known in Zambia.
Arise Africa is committed to helping individuals live a life that God desires for all mankind by assisting with spiritual, economic, and physical poverty. We strive to empower others through the truth and love of Jesus Christ to become responsible, independent, and self-sustaining individuals. -Arise Africa’s Mission
3. Love Africa Mission
Love Africa Mission is working to provide people with the opportunity to experience mission work in Africa. They are currently working in Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, and Rwanda. Love Africa Mission wants to partner with people in bringing the love of Jesus to Africa. They want people who go on trips with them to share the love of Jesus to the African people. They believe this experience will change your life.
While on a trip with Love Africa Mission, you have the chance to work alongside seasoned missionaries in Africa. They will lead and guide you as you do ministry. Their example will inspire you as you see how they love and serve others. You will grow in your relationship with God as you push yourself to do ministry in a new country.
They offer multiple trips throughout the summer to Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, and Rwanda. They also offer a two-month internship where you stay in each one of the four countries. You can learn more about upcoming trips here .
Ministry while serving with Love Africa ministry includes:
- Working with children in primary school

Our desire is that every person that serves on a short-term trip with us will come home with a clear vision and a pure passion to serve right where they live. -Love Africa’s Mission
If you’ve ever considered going on a mission trip, I would encourage you to pray about it. Short-term mission trips are an amazing opportunity for you to experience life overseas for a few weeks. Maybe God is leading you to take a trip overseas to Africa or some other part of the world.
For me, going on two short term mission trips to Uganda changed my life. I am now attending a missionary school to become a missionary long term. Africa is the place where I discovered my love and passion for missions. It helped me understand what the Great Commission is and how we all play a part in fulfilling it.
I’ll leave you with a story during my second trip to Uganda. I was in Pabo staying with my team in a small village. I had made friends with one of the little girls from the village. The missionaries we were staying with had given me paper and crayons to use with the kids. I started coloring with a little girl (pictured above) sitting on my lap. After a few minutes of us coloring, another child came and starting coloring, then another, and another and pretty soon I was surrounded by kids.
Each child would show me what they drew. Some drew a picture of their family, while others drew the flag of Uganda. Once they had finished their pictures, they one by one started handing them to me. I would tell them what I liked about their picture and tried to give them their drawings back, but they wouldn’t take them back. They wanted me to have their pictures.
I couldn’t believe the generosity these children were showing me. They hardly had anything. They didn’t have crayons and paper. They couldn’t draw a picture anytime they wanted. Yet, they gave me their drawings. It was this moment I felt God leading me to be a missionary teacher. This is one of the reasons why I am pursuing a degree in missions and education. The pictures the children gave me are still in my Bible.
I share this story with you to encourage you as you are considering going on a mission trip to Africa. Going on a trip overseas to do ministry can be scary and may feel overwhelming. Remember that God is with you all the time. He will still be with you when it’s hard.
By going overseas on a mission trip, you are allowing God to use you. You are being a light to others who don’t know Jesus. God can use you to show the love of Jesus to people in Africa.
Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love. -Mother Teresa

7 Awesome Mission Trips to Africa
- Resource Library 7 Awesome Mission Trips to Africa
Sometimes, Christians will joke about following God wherever He leads—as long as He doesn’t call them to Africa. But the truth is, the African continent is a stunning mixture of incredible beauty and devastating need. That’s why many sending organizations have a full slate of mission trips to Africa listed in their short-term, long-term, and career options.
Getting to Know Today’s Africa
While it’s easy to think of Africa as a mysterious place, it’s important to move past stereotypes and examine the facts. For example, Africa is the second largest continent in terms of both land and population. It accounts for about 20% of the world’s land mass (nearly 12 million square miles) and more than 12% of its population (1.2 billion people). Those people are spread across 54 nations, including the islands of Madagascar and Seychelles. More than 1,500 different languages can be heard on the continent.
Geographically, two regions of Africa are divided by the Sahara Desert, one of the largest deserts in the world. Yet, areas of Africa thrive thanks to magnificent rivers (like the Nile) that feed into fertile valleys and forests. The continent is home to both large, modern cities and traditional, rural villages.
Religiously, Africa has a long history with both Christianity and Islam. Many in the more rural regions also practice spiritism and naturalistic religions, along with witchcraft.
7 Mission Trips to Africa
All of that information makes mission trips to Africa a vital tool in fulfilling the Great Commission . The combination of a large population and spiritual diversity means that many African people need to hear about Jesus. Plus, so much of Africa is underserved and mired in poverty. It’s a place where opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus abound, especially when it comes to medical missions.
The list below highlights seven organizations that are sponsoring medical mission trips to Africa in 2023. Since the needs are so great, the opportunities are rich. Regardless of your specialty, you can find a place to serve on a mission trip to Africa.
Pioneer Christian Hospital
This 60-bed hospital is located in the Republic of Congo and exists to share Jesus while making an impact on the overall health of the nation. Pioneer, which serves an area that roughly 300,000 people call home, offers opportunities for both long-term and short-term African mission experiences. Visiting medical missionaries work with Congolese staff members to treat a wide array of medical issues.
Tenwek Hospital .
The motto of Kenya’s Tenwek Hospital is “We Treat, Jesus Heals.” Founded in 1937, this 361-bed hospital continues to meet the needs of residents in a variety of ways, including dental and optometric services. Tenwek is also a teaching hospital that trains new doctors and has a research emphasis to keep up with important medical advances. Medical missions opportunities are provided in cooperation with hospital partners, like Samaritan’s Purse and World Gospel Mission.
World Medical Mission .
Speaking of Samaritan’s Purse, this North Carolina-based ministry provides additional medical mission trips to Africa through World Medical Mission. The ministry’s Specialty Teams represent a focus on short-term experiences in places like Kenya and Cameroon. Some of these teams share knowledge with local doctors, while others focus on medical equipment and building relationships that could help expand its network of medical facilities. World Medical Mission also has internships and apprenticeships for students.
Cure International .
If you have a heart for children, you will want to look into the African mission trips sponsored by Cure International. With hospitals in seven African nations (Malawi, Ethiopia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Niger, Zambia, and Kenya), Cure specializes in treating children with disabilities. The surgeries they provide are performed at no cost to the families involved. In addition to medical professionals, Cure also offers opportunities for spiritual ministry and facilities management.
One World Health .
Mission trips to Africa sponsored by One World Health focus primarily on the nation of Uganda through two kinds of trips. The group’s typical short-term experience—Clinical Outreach Teams—lasts one week and provides support for local hospital staffs. One World Health has three of these trips planned this year, in May, July, and December. The second option is an ongoing project called Partner in Global Health. This trip provides continuing education to local professionals and encourages a four-week commitment.
Global Health Outreach .
As part of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations, Global Health Outreach offers dozens of outreach events each year, including mission trips to Africa. For example, in June a trip to Zambia will focus on orphan care. Because HIV and other illnesses have devastated its adult population, Zambia has the world’s highest orphan rate, despite being only the size of Texas. This trip will bring together medical doctors, dentists, optometrists, nurses, physical therapists, and even non-medical volunteers to meet these needs. In addition, GHO has separate general medical trips to Ghana and northern Africa scheduled for later in the year.
Medical Educators International .
If you’re a teacher at heart, Medical Educators International might be the group for you. Like GHO, Medical Educators International is a ministry of Christian Medical and Dental Associates, but it provides academic and clinical training for indigenous medical staffs. In addition to instructing students on the practical aspects of health care, MEI missionaries also model ways to show the love and compassion of Jesus. In June, MEI is sponsoring a trip to Tanzania to teach medical residents in classroom settings and through hospital rounds.

a 14 day of Volunteering in Northern Uganda
Mission trips can take many forms, depending on the organization and the specific needs of the communities being served. Some common types of mission work in Africa include:
Education: Many mission trips focus on supporting local schools. This might involve teaching English, assisting with computer literacy programs, or helping to build or renovate school buildings. In countries like Ghana, Uganda, and Kenya, volunteers often work in both urban and rural schools, providing valuable support to overworked teachers and bringing new perspectives to students.
Healthcare: Medical mission trips are particularly common and can be life-changing for both volunteers and local communities. Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals provide essential medical care in areas where access to healthcare is limited. This might include general check-ups, dental care, eye care, or specialized treatments. Countries like Tanzania, Zambia, and Malawi often host medical missions.
Construction: Building homes, schools, clinics, or community centers is another common focus for mission trips. These projects provide tangible, long-lasting benefits to communities. In countries like South Africa and Mozambique, construction projects often focus on improving infrastructure in underserved areas.
Agriculture and Sustainability: Some mission trips focus on sustainable development, teaching farming techniques, setting up irrigation systems, or implementing renewable energy solutions. These projects are particularly relevant in countries facing food security issues or environmental challenges, such as Ethiopia or Senegal.
Orphanage Support: While it’s important to approach orphanage volunteering ethically, some organizations run responsible programs that provide genuine support to children in need. This might involve education support, recreational activities, or assisting with daily care.
Community Development: Many mission trips take a holistic approach to community development, working on projects identified by local leaders as priorities. This could include anything from setting up micro-finance initiatives to implementing clean water projects.
When planning or participating in a mission trip, it’s crucial to approach the experience with cultural sensitivity and a genuine desire to learn and collaborate with local communities. The most effective mission trips are those that work in partnership with local organizations and leaders, addressing needs that the community itself has identified.
Preparation for a mission trip typically involves not just practical planning, but also cultural and sometimes language training. Many organizations provide pre-trip orientations to help volunteers understand the context they’ll be working in and how to interact respectfully with local communities.
While the primary focus of a mission trip is service, these experiences also offer unique opportunities for cultural immersion and personal growth. Volunteers often live with local families or in basic accommodations within the community, allowing for deep cultural exchange. Many trips also include time for exploration of local sites or wildlife areas, providing a more rounded experience of the country.
It’s important to note that mission trips have faced criticism in recent years, with concerns raised about the potential for “voluntourism” to do more harm than good. Responsible mission trip organizers address these concerns by ensuring their projects are sustainable, locally-led, and genuinely beneficial to the communities they serve. They focus on capacity building and skills transfer, rather than creating dependency.
For those considering a mission trip to Africa, it’s essential to research organizations thoroughly. Look for those with a long-term presence in the countries they serve, strong partnerships with local organizations, and a clear commitment to ethical practices. Consider your own skills and how they might be best utilized – while enthusiasm is important, the most effective volunteers are those who can offer specific skills or expertise.
Mission trips can be physically and emotionally demanding, but they often prove to be profoundly rewarding experiences. They offer the chance to step outside your comfort zone, gain new perspectives, and make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Whether you’re teaching in a rural school in Kenya, assisting with a medical clinic in Tanzania, or helping to build homes in South Africa, a mission trip can be a life-changing way to experience Africa while contributing to its communities.

Where in the world do you want to make a difference?
”There was never just one memory that was my favorite, there were to many to choose from. My time spent in Africa will always remind me of when I was happiest, theres just something about it that made me feel a sense of belonging I had never felt before. It was amazing and I'm so thankful I chose to go to Arusha. The friends I made were from all over the world and we were all so different, but at the same time so similar we were there with a purpose, all of us. I still talk to so many of the friends I made there, its so amazing. The program manager, Victoria, was awesome I was never afraid to ask questions and she was always there for me and any volunteer no matter what time or what day, not only that she's one of the good hearted people I've ever met. The whole staff really made the visit so enjoyable.”

Our Mission
PREPARING FOR A MISSION TRIP TO AFRICA
Africa is an amazing, beautiful, and awe-inspiring place to volunteer abroad. It’s impossible to take in the entire expanse and all that Africa has to offer in one trip. At Mission Discovery, we’ve seen first-hand the beauty and need for mission work in Africa. Whether you choose to travel on a short-term missions trip with us to Kenya or travel on your own, it’s important to be prepared for the unique physical needs, culture and climate of the country where you volunteer abroad. Consider these tips before you do short term missions work or vacation in Africa:
- Physical Needs – As with any kind of missionary work, you want to be prepared mentally, spiritually, and physically. It is extra important to be prepared physically when you’re traveling to Africa. You’ll be very far from home in what will feel like a whole new world. Although no immunizations are required for a traveling to Africa, while you’ll want to check with your medical professionals for your trip, it is often recommended to get immunizations for yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A, and diphtheria. It is also frequently recommended to consider some sort of anti-malarial treatment. There’s no need to feel apprehensive to do missionary work in a country where immunizations are recommended before visiting. These steps are simply to help ensure your safety while traveling in a place where you may encounter health factors your body is not typically used to.
- Culture – The downside of short-term mission trips is that often you’ll leave feeling like you’ve only scratched the surface of the country where you served. The culture in Africa is a completely unique and awe-inspiring experience for the first time. You will feel drained physically from the toll of traveling across the world to do mission work. However, the culture will likely leave you feeling full and excited to get to know people more deeply. The people of Africa are extremely warm and welcoming. It’s important to recognize that many places in Africa, including Kenya, are impacted by poverty. The divide of rich and poor is very apparent in Africa. Take the time to get to know individuals as you travel, but still take some precautions when traveling in a populated area. Keep a copy of your passport in your luggage . Don’t carry expensive camera equipment or a lot of cash . Don’t wear expensive jewelry. Travel in pairs.
- Climate – The climate in Africa is typically hot with very cool temperatures at night. You need to prepare for a little bit of everything when you travel to Africa. Depending on your lodging, you’ll want to prepare to bundle up at night. The days will require protection from the sun and breathable clothing. Most places in Africa have two rainy seasons throughout the year. The air can be very dry so be prepared with lip balm and lotion.
There are many way to prepare for a trip overseas. These are some highlights that will help you begin to wrap your mind around what to expect while volunteering abroad in Africa. Our next trip to M’bita, Kenya is scheduled for July 12-22, 2015 . Why Choose Africa as Your Mission Trip Destination?
Africa has long been a top destination for mission trips , and it’s easy to see why. It’s an incredibly diverse continent with a wide variety of people, languages, religions, art, music, food, and culture.
So, what are some of the things you can expect?
People who have gone on mission trips to Africa have written about their spiritual experiences, the simplicity of the rural environments, and the many adventures where their travels have led.
In other words, Africa is a continent full of untold possibilities.
Mission travelers have also recounted how their collaborations with others have led to lifelong friendships and how the challenges of helping out where it’s needed have been formative to their character. For example, mission traveler Sarah Graefe explains how she developed a new appreciation for air conditioning and bottled water after she returned from her mission trip.
What Are the Best Destinations for Africa Mission Trips?
If the thought of mission trips to Africa appeals to you, then you might wonder where in Africa to go. Africa is the second-largest continent in the world and offers 54 different countries to choose from.
We’ve outlined five destinations below that are all rich in culture and diversity. But each of these countries also face unique challenges, such as poverty and a lack of access to education. These challenges are what make them ideal destinations for your mission trip.
Uganda is a landlocked country in east-central Africa, full of lakes, mountains, and savannas. The country is known for its huge agricultural industry, which produces cotton, tea, and tobacco.
What Makes Uganda An Ideal Destination for a Mission Trip?
Uganda offers exotic wildlife and warm, vibrant people, but many of its citizens experience the devastating effects of poverty. In fact, the average Ugandan makes just $1.80 per da y , and many people do not have access to licensed doctors or modern medicine.
Mission trips to Uganda frequently focus on assisting orphanages, providing life-saving medical care, and empowering women.
2. South Africa
Experience the beautiful Cape Town, the majestic Table Mountain, or the bustling metropolis of Johannesburg. There is much to see on a South Africa mission trip , and there are plenty of projects to join.
What Makes South Africa An Ideal Destination for a Mission Trip?
The abundance of natural resources has made South Africa an emerging market on the international market. And yet, high rates of unemployment and a crumbling infrastructure are stifling growth.
Mission trips to South Africa often focus on alleviating the challenges faced by disadvantaged groups, such as homelessness and overcrowding.
3. Kenya
If you’ve ever daydreamed about scenic landscapes, then look no further than Kenya . With its numerous wildlife preserves, it’s a top destination for conservation projects of all kinds.
What Makes Kenya An Ideal Destination for a Mission Trip?
Despite its diverse environment and resources, Kenya is plagued by diseases , such as HIV/AIDS and malaria. Many locals also lack vital supplies , such as shoes for their children or formula for their infants.
Many mission trips to Kenya focus on building and construction projects to help out the many orphanages that lack resources of their own.
4. Tanzania
Tanzania is home to Kilimanjaro, which is the highest mountain on the African continent. From alpine deserts to fertile rainforests, there is much to experience in this west-central country.
What Makes Tanzania An Ideal Destination for a Mission Trip?
Tanzania has a booming tourism industry due to its incredible wildlife. But there is also a large wealth disparity and an ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic . Rural residents have limited or zero access to education, medicine, supplies, and food.
You’ll find many mission trips to Tanzania that assist in feeding orphans and training locals in skills such as making quilts and planting rice.
Ghana offers a tropical climate and warm, friendly people. The nation has made huge strides toward democracy in recent years and consistently ranks in the top three African countries for freedom of speech and press. Additionally, citizens of other African countries often travel to Ghana to receive better healthcare.
What Makes Ghana An Ideal Destination for a Mission Trip?
Despite all of Ghana’s achievements, the nation still suffers from widespread poverty. Many families lack access to clean water, food, and shelter.
Mission trips to Ghana often include construction work and work at local orphanages, where many of the children have been orphaned, abandoned, or were previously trafficked into child slavery.
Which Types of Mission Trips to Africa Can You Join?
Now that you’ve seen some of your options, it’s time to think about the type of project you’d like to work on. Many impoverished areas will require everything from construction to conservation. Keep reading to explore the types of mission trips available to you in Africa.
1. Construction
Are you good with your hands? Then you should consider joining a construction-based mission trip . Assist local architects, surveyors, and engineers with building a better future.
Construction projects often include building churches, hospitals, schools, housing, and camps for local communities.
Organizations for construction-heavy mission trips often seek volunteers who are experienced in the following types of work:
- Carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and electrical work
- Green building
- Architecture and engineering
- Maintenance work
However, most mission groups will be glad to have you lend a helping hand, no matter your skill level.
2. Teaching
If you have a degree or a teaching certificate, then you could make a world of difference in the mission field of education. Help local school kids and young people improve their skills and chances in life.
Teaching projects often focus on teaching English to locals so they’re better able to find jobs in the international market. But you don’t necessarily have to be a certified English teacher. Mission organizations often need administrators, resident assistants (RAs), and support staff as well.
3. Child Care
Taking care of children can be particularly difficult for locals in poor areas where the workdays are much longer than they are in other nations. You can help local families care for their children or assist in a local daycare.
One of the painful consequences of poverty, deadly diseases, and civil war is that many African children are orphaned at a very young age.
That’s why mission groups who focus on child care often work with local orphanages to:
- Teach basic life skills
- Engage in sports and outdoor activities
- Serve meals
- Connect children with long-term caregivers
The most important skills you’ll need when working with children is empathy and empowerment.
Health is one of the most important things we have—without it, all else fails. If you’re a medical student or graduate , then your knowledge and expertise are desperately needed in Africa.
Not only do many African countries suffer from diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria, but some regions also lack the education and resources to prevent and treat these diseases. That’s why many medical mission trips not only seek to cure but also to educate local populations.
Organizations are always looking for professionals and students in the following areas of healthcare:
- Speech therapists
- Physical therapists
5. Conservation
Africa is home to some of the most diverse wildlife in the world. Unfortunately, African wildlife is under threat due to climate change and poachers. Help preserve the local wildlife by joining a conservation-based mission trip.
Here are some of the animals you can help protect:
- Chimpanzees
This list is by no means exhaustive, as there is an almost limitless variety of animals on the African continent—many of which are threatened and need your help.

Program costs tend to range from as little as $180 to as much as $3200 for a short-term trip. For longer trips, the average cost is about $3,000 .
And that’s just for the cost of the program.
Although you can’t put a price on this kind of experience, we’ve outlined a few of the additional expenses for you consider below.
1. Administration
Depending on the organization you’ve chosen, admin fees may or may not be covered by the program cost. Admin fees typically include a background check, vaccinations, and mission trip medical insurance .
2. Equipment
Depending on the type of project you sign up for, you may need special equipment. This could include camping and cooking gear, worksite tools and protective gear, as well as any incidental supplies such as sunscreen.

5 Tips for a Successful Mission Trip to Africa
Proper preparation can help to prevent mishaps and negative surprises discovered upon arrival, so many sure you do your research before landing abroad.
Below, you’ll find an outline of some of the most important items you should add to your to-do list before your mission trip to Africa.
1. Research the Organization
Not all organizations are created equal, and you’d do well to read as much as you can about your options before you commit to one. Read online reviews and reports from past volunteers.
2. Read About the Destination
A Wikipedia entry won’t tell the whole story of your destination. Buy or borrow a book about the country you’re going to or explore online blogs from previous visitors to your destination to gain a solid understanding of the local customs and culture.
3. Get Vaccinated
The organization you travel with should inform you of any vaccines that are required or suggested for your destination, but it can’t hurt to research health concerns in the nation as well.
Tip: Use the “Travelers’ Health” tool from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to discover important health information about your destination, such as what health concerns are plaguing the country and what vaccines are suggested or required.
4. Determine Whether You Need Mission Trip Medical Insurance
Hopefully, nothing will go wrong on your mission trip abroad. But if it does, mission trip medical insurance can provide you with coverage for unexpected accidents, illnesses, travel mishaps, and other travel-related medical emergencies .
Determine whether your regular health insurance provides any coverage abroad, and whether this coverage is sufficient for your needs.
Tip: Discover why you may need group trip medical insurance or explore the benefits of Atlas Travel insurance .
5. Pack Accordingly
Many organizations will provide you with a list of items to pack. It may also be helpful to browse online packing lists and tips from previous mission travelers to your destination to learn what they wish they’d brought and what they wish they’d left behind. –
Tip: Refer to this mission trip packing list and tick off all the items you need for the trip.
Ready to Go?
Hopefully, you’ve found the ideal destination and determined which reputable organization will help you get there.

Preparing for a Mission Trip to Africa (10 Useful Tips)
Africa has, for many years, hosted thousands of missionaries and Non profits who seek to improve the outcomes of many underprivileged people in the continent. One of the first things you would need to do when preparing to come to Africa for a mission is to preparing a list of things you need to do before embarking on your mission trip.
Planning ahead of time is critical to the success of the mission trip to Africa. Poor planning can cause a lot of frustration and introduce a myriad of challenges so it’s best to plan ahead.
Let me plan your African Safari
From creating your custom itinerary to handling bookings with safari companies, and sending you reminders for key details— I take care of it all so you don’t have to. Focus on the excitement of your trip, and leave the planning to me.
I am accepting only 3 spots this month so book now to secure your spot.
One-time payment of $350
Below, I have prepared a list of ten critical things that you will need to have in place before embarking on your missionary trip to Africa. It is by no means an exhaustive list but it is a good place to start as you plan.
1. Pack Appropriate Clothing
When coming to kenya for missions, how you dress will greatly influence how effective you will be. It is therefore important to follow a few basic rules:
- Avoid revealing clothing. Anything that exposes your thighs and chest should be avoided.
- Avoid wearing very flashy jewellery. Anything that makes you seem as if you’re flaunting your wealth may make your message ineffective.
- Consider the weather the location you will be travelling to. Africa has a wide range of climates and it is important to know exactly what kind of temperatures you will be expecting and what kind of clothing would be good for that kind of weather.
- Keep in mind that laundry is usually done on a weekly basis that you will need enough clothes to last you a week and a half to leave room for the washed laundry to dry.
2. Get immunization
Different countries have different requirements for immunization and you will need to know which immunizations you are required and advised to have before travelling. The CDC website>> https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel provides a good guide for the immunizations you need to have before travelling.
Travelling to a foreign country exposes you to diseases that many locals are immune to and this places you at greater risk of getting ill than people from that region. I have missionary friends who constantly fell ill in their first year of coming to Kenya and most of us would not fall ill even though we were in the same environment with them.
3. Pack a Sanitation Kit
What I mean by a ‘Sanitation Kit” is carrying with you a kit that will help you keep your hands and environment clean as a way of keeping you safe from waterborne diseases like typhoid and cholera which are common in Africa. These include
- A travel sized pack of Kleenex
- Portable antiseptic wet wipes
- Portable hand wash that you can put in your bag
- Hand sanitizer that you can carry in your bag
These will help you stay clean even when clean running water is not available to wash your hands before meals.
5. Find a Good Water Bottle
Clean drinking water is sometimes hard to come by when you are away from your mission base/home and carrying your own water with you will help you guard against drinking contaminated water. A 1-litre bottle would be adequate for this.
4. Make copies of your passport and credit cards
Before starting your trip, make 2 copies of your passport and credit cards and place one in your check-in luggage and the other in your carry on luggage. This will prove crucial in case you lose your passport or credit card and you need to report them as stolen. You constantly hope that this will not happen but its important to be prepared in case it does.
5. Refill your prescription
If you are under medication, you need to get a full prescription that will last you the entirety of your mission trip including travel days. African hospitals may not have your particular prescription and even when they do, it might be really expensive to get it over here.
In addition to the full prescription, ask your doctor to write out a prescription for you in case you will need to get the medicine over here. This is because you will have to pay a doctor’s consultation fee to get a prescription refilled
6. Buy a power adapter for your devices
Kenya and other African countries us the 220-240V in our electricity compared to the 110V in the USA. To ensure that you don’t fry your devices, get a power adapter that will convert the power to 110V before it gets to your devices. I found the following adapter on Amazon and it has some great reviews. Check out the Adapter on Amazon
7. Aquatint yourself with the culture of the local people you will be serving
8. Find An Affordable Flight
Booking your flight several months ahead of time will help you save on your travel costs so take some time and check what flights are available.
9. Find a local contact
The success of your mission will depend on finding a good local contact who will help you navigate through the challenges that you will surely face when you come for your mission trip. If you are coming as part of an organized group, it’s most likely that the organizers already have local networks on the ground who will prepare most of what will be needed before the missionaries arrive.
If you are going it alone, you will need to reach out to contacts in the places you are going to and cultivate a good relationship with them months ahead of your arrival. This can be a particularly daunting task since there are many cons who take advantage of unsuspecting foreigners online.
If you are coming to Africa for the first time, use an organized mission program. Alternatively, if you have a connection with an established missionary, you can come to visit them and do your mission work from their place. This will help protect you from any scammers and prevent you from getting stranded.
10. Plan to do touristy things
If you’ve come all the way, you might as well check out some local attractions like national parks and beaches. If you are coming to Kenya, the Maasai Mara should be on your list of places you need to visit when you come for safari.
With advanced planning a short African Safari can be quite affordable and there is an abundance of options to choose from that, many times, are not very far from where you will be stationed.

Mission Trips: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know
Have you ever thought about going on a mission trip? Did you shy away from the idea because you weren’t sure what it would take or where to begin? You’re certainly not alone. There is a lot to know about mission trips. From planning and preparing to packing and participating. This all-encompassing guide covers it all.
Read on to learn:
What are mission trips?
Why do people go on mission trips, who goes on mission trips, where can you go on mission trips, how long are mission trips, what do you do on mission trips, what do you learn on mission trips, what kinds of mission trips are there and what is their purpose, what do you need to know before deciding to go on a mission trip, how much do mission trips cost and who pays for them, how do you raise money for mission trips, how do you prepare for a mission trip, what do you do when you get back from a mission trip.
Mission trips are Christ-centered service experiences. They offer a wide variety of opportunities for participants to share and spread the word of God. They bring together groups of people interested in serving communities with abundant needs.
But they’re more than volunteer projects. God is the central tenant of every mission trip. The purpose of a mission trip is not simply to deliver aid. It is to leave a lasting impact by leading people toward Him.
People who choose to go on a mission trip want to help communities that are not as fortunate as they are. They want to experience what it’s like to impact the lives of others. They want to appreciate His Blessings, to share the Gospel, and to grow closer to God.
There are still many people who have never heard of our God or Jesus and His message of salvation and hope. So, people also go on mission trips to share His love — just as the disciples did.
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
- Matthew 28:16-20
Millions of people who take part in mission trips each year. Many of them look forward to experiencing God’s work. Whether they’re looking for clarification and direction in their own lives or want to see Christ’s impact magnified in new ways, loving and serving others allows them to give more of their life to Him.
Any Christian with a desire to serve can participate in a mission trip. Groups of students, families, churches, and other organizations all take part.
The people who come together to serve are not always from the same area. In addition to church leaders, church members, and missionaries from around the world, participants often include other professionals from a wide range of fields.
People are attracted to missions for a variety of reasons. Qualities like their shared and/or mutually beneficial interests, skills, talents, and aspirations bring them together.
That can mean the history, backgrounds, and motivations of a single group vary widely. This diversity is beneficial, allowing the mission team to connect and serve on many different levels.
The only thing you really need to go on a mission trip is to be confident you are mentally, emotionally, and physically capable of performing the required duties. This is why it is important you fully understand the area and conditions into which you will be traveling.

You can participate in a mission trip across a large portion of the world. The map below from The Traveling Team shows the number of missionaries received in 2010.

As you can see, there are many opportunities to participate. Websites like ShortTermMissions.com allow you to search for openings from a long list of mission agencies. You can also narrow your searches using criteria like region, activity, and length.
Or, if you have a specific location in mind you can visit an organization’s website directly. Missions of Hope International (MOHI), for example, has opportunities available in Kenya, Africa . Contacting an organization directly will help you get your questions answered quickly and efficiently.
How do you choose a mission trip?
There are many organizations (like SIM and Bold Hope ) set up to help match a servant with a call to serve. However, we recommend starting with your local church. First, meet with your clergyman to see if he or she is aware of opportunities that meet your interests.
There may also be others in your community looking for an opportunity to serve. Don’t be afraid to hold an informational meeting and invite your fellow worshipers to learn about the benefits of mission trips.
Once you have researched available opportunities, we suggest narrowing them down by interest. Are you looking for an opportunity to travel abroad? Would you like to put a particular skillset to work? Next, you can decide on a location based on where you are able to travel.
Some trips are more expensive than others. So, the extent to which you can secure financial support may also play into your final decision.
Wherever you go, make sure you fully understand what you are trying to gain personally. This will help you can choose an opportunity to help you achieve your goals. Choosing in this manner will help you enjoy deeper spiritual growth while you are away.
For example, many of the people who participate in a mission trip to Kenya with MOHI go because they want to meet the children they sponsor. Others use the trip to help decide whether they would like to sponsor a child or go simply because they’re passionate about helping children get a quality Christian education.
Today’s mission trips — no matter how long they are — are all considered short-term mission trips. A short-term mission could be as long as several months in Africa or as short as a weekend in the inner city.
Long-term missions, on the other hand, are considered lifelong journeys. This time can be spent in one location or many. A large number of mission staff members make lifetime commitments to serving short-term missions, for example.
Most likely the trip you are thinking about taking will be a short-term opportunity. Short term mission trips last anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. The exact time commitment can vary based on the location and the kind of project you are completing.
When it comes to the tasks required for any mission, no two are ever the same. If you’re teaching, your time might be spent in a classroom or church. If you are cleaning up after a natural disaster, you may spend all of your time outdoors performing hard physical labor.
But at their very root, all mission trips follow this same premise:
You’ll be going to a specific destination to complete an assignment that betters the lives of the people living there — like building a house or church, working in a school, or planting trees. With MOHI, for example, your partnership will help facilitate a holistic transformation in urban slums and remote, rural areas of Kenya where resources are extremely limited.
While you’re serving, your primary responsibilities will be to provide physical labor needs or to help meet educational objectives related to these tasks. However, your days also will be filled with activities that help you accomplish the mission’s true purpose: bringing disparate souls to Christ.
In fact, prayer and reflection are the most important part of the mission experience. During your trip, you may have many opportunities to lead and participate in prayer with the local community or with your travel group. Many opportunities — like helping to start schools, churches, and training centers in Kenya with MOHI — will provide the needed resources so that longer-term missionaries can continue to share the Word of God daily with the community.
The biggest opportunity to learn on a mission trip comes as a result of your evangelism and God-focused mindset. As you serve, you will encounter opportunities to grow your relationship with Christ. By taking these chances to serve wholeheartedly, you will see situations and others like Jesus wants you to, forever changing the way you look at the world and your life.
Your learning can also be centered on your service work. If you’re traveling to Kenya to install windows in local dwellings, for example, you might have to learn a few handyman basics like how to trim shims and apply caulk. It’s possible these experiences will help you find new skills or interests you can take home and share.
There is also a chance to learn from the travel itself. Immersing yourself in another culture can help you to recognize differences in the world around you. As you come to love and appreciate the unique art, music, or cuisine of the area you are serving it can help you become more open-minded and loving toward others no matter their background or beliefs.
There are many different kinds of mission trips, each organized for a variety of reasons including education improvement, infrastructure repair, governance reform, and environmental sustainability. They often vary in length and are usually tailored for groups of people from children and teens to adults of all ages.
Some bring aid to countries suffering from the aftermath of war or natural disasters, some focus on meeting the medical needs of underserved communities. Still, others bring hope for women and children by empowering them to leave abusive situations.
Since the intentions of mission trips can be so diverse, their impacts can vary wildly, and the benefits can be many. The goal of mission trips, however, is constant: to love and serve others. Every mission trip embarks with the end purpose of helping others to find God while showing them how to walk in His ways.
Before you decide to go on a mission trip, take time to learn as much as you can about the culture, its people, and the community you will be visiting.
Ask yourself questions like these before making your final decision:
- How do you feel about the area’s customs?
- Do you prefer an area where English is a commonly spoken language?
- Are you reluctant to take any of the necessary precautions (like getting recommended vaccinations) before leaving?
Your answers will help you paint a clearer picture of the fit of the mission trip you are considering. As you are weighing your options be sure to thoroughly consider your personal limits regarding accommodations and safety as well.
Deciding to participate in a mission trip means you will be traveling somewhere you’ve never been before. It’s important you deeply consider how much of a cultural leap you are ready to take. The anticipation of the trip can leave you with a very real fear of the unknown.
The good news is that overcoming these anxieties takes just a bit of preparation and a willingness to place your trust in God and His plan. Remember to pray about it. Pray for wisdom from the Bible and for God to grant you peace of mind.
One of the biggest questions someone who has never been on a mission trip before might ask is: Are mission trips expensive? The three biggest cost contributors are your travel, the length of your stay, and fees of the program you are participating in — if it’s not a mission organized directly through your church.
The fee you pay for many programs — though it may seem unnecessary — can actually help you save money. The facilitators will arrange travel, accommodations, food, and other essentials for your entire group, saving you money and hassle because many of the incidental expenses you might encounter will be taken care of before you arrive.
But what is the financial cost, really?
The truth is that it can vary — from hundreds of dollars to thousands — based on where you are going and what you are doing. In general, some locations cost more than others. They require extensive preparations, travel, supplies, and time — which on the surface can all add up fast.
Often, the people going on a mission trip make sacrifices to support it with personal savings, through a loan, or contributions from their parents and other family and friends.
Expenses paid out of pocket to attend your mission trip could be tax-deductible under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3). We recommend consulting your tax advisor for more information.
If you are worried about covering the cost of your trip, there are several ways you can save money. Reduce travel expenses by staying closer to home and avoiding peak travel times to the area you are serving. Additionally, you can try cutting accommodation costs by arranging part of your stay with a host family or local hostel. Lastly, check into local scholarships offered by your church or other community organizations.
If you decide the cost of a mission trip is out of your reach, consider sponsoring a child or community instead.
Many mission groups start their fundraising process with a support letter to their immediate community. Support letters are multi-purpose: They ask for both the spiritual and financial support you’ll need for your trip.
When you sit down to write yours, consider these tips:
- Begin your letter by sharing your story
- Share the news of your trip
- Let recipients know how they can best support you (financially and spiritually)
- Offer ways to stay in touch during and after your trip
Another very popular way to lower your mission trip’s expenses is to raise money. From spaghetti feeds to online fundraisers , the list of ways to fund your mission trip can be endless.
There are also ways to raise support for your trip that does not involve money. As you prepare, consider asking for material items. Make and distribute a list and don’t forget to include drop off and collection dates, locations, and times.
Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for spiritual support. Let your supporters know how they can pray for you.
From what to pack to travel accommodations, there are a lot of things to think about before actually leaving on a mission trip.
Preparing for a mission trip takes more than coming with an open mind though. Preparing emotionally for what is sure to be an emotional experience will help you to gain more from the opportunity. God will be with you, but you will have to leave behind your local support system and the familiarity of your home and church community.
Before you leave don’t be afraid to reach out to recently returned mission travelers to ask about their experience. Hearing firsthand about their service can ease your mind and help you to pray about the experience that awaits you from a deeper perspective.
After you arrive, keep your heart open to fellowship opportunities. You will have a lot of shared experiences with the individuals on the journey with you. Take the time to seek the Lord and grow together in His Word.
Sharing your mission trip experience allows you to continue glorifying God even after the physical work is done. Seek out opportunities to talk with friends, family, and church members about what you did, what you saw, and how it impacted you. The opportunity for them to learn from you can be just as valuable to them as it was for you.
Talk about what it felt like doing the Lord’s work, explain why you felt called to serve and what the experience was like once you arrived. Keeping a journal while on your trip can help you to call on your experience and share your reflections more deeply.
If you had the opportunity to take photos and videos during your trip, consider putting together a highlight reel to help friends and family really connect with what you have to say. As you share, remember to go beyond educating people about a different part of the world. Make it a goal to inspire others to serve God in a meaningful way as well.
Making a Commitment to God and Yourself
Your mission experience is not over once you return home. Participating in a mission trip brings an abundance of opportunity to share His teachings and grow in God’s Word. Not only will you be impacting the lives of people around the world, but you’ll also make an impact on those closest to you, and most of all have the chance to realize many changes in yourself.
If you have questions about how you can live your life in a mission-minded way or are looking for an opportunity to experience God’s love abroad, don’t be afraid to seek out mission trips.

Your generous donation helps to save and change lives every day.
Your charitable investment will go toward ongoing global relief to care for the underserved and vulnerable people of this community. As a member of this medical mission team, you will elevate the long-term impact of sustainable, capacity-building efforts that improve the health, wellness, and quality of life of those most in need.
The health and well-being of most South Africans remains burdened under infectious and non-communicable diseases, persisting social disparities, and inadequate human resources to provide care for the growing population. This growing population is extra vulnerable due to an increase in refugees and economic migrants. There is a need to strengthen the health care system and address several social determinants of health that are specifically impacting the population of South Africa.
Extreme poverty affects a large proportion of the population, which impacts the overall health due to the lack of access to the basic requirements of life including clean water, adequate nutrition, sanitation, access to vaccinations, health education, etc. International Medical Relief teams are able to provide services and supplies, and educate communities to improve overall health outcomes.
With diligent planning and preparation, IMR is dedicated to ensuring that specific goals are met on our missions, each in correlation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 17.
IMR works to elevate vulnerable populations through shoulder-to-shoulder care with our local partners, creating workforce density, and a cadre of future healthcare and public health leaders in association to UNSDG 3: Good Health & Wellbeing.
In correlation with UNSDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, our organization works in collaboration and at the request of local hosts where we are under their direct influence and affluence. IMR never goes into a country without a formal invitation where there is a great community need for medical or dental care, and health education.
This Mission
Enjoy food at a traditional South African Braai where selected barbecue meats and chakalaka sauces tempt any palate. Walk along the famous boardwalk where the Durban beaches come alive with world-class surfers taking on the giant waves or take a dive or watch the sunrise on this beautiful promenade. You will enjoy local Cuban eateries, curry houses, and oceanside dining where the flavor of Durban comes in full swing! The team will also visit a local Zulu tribe where homemade handicrafts, dancing and traditional Zulu celebrations will take place with your participation.
Lodging/Transportation
On this mission, you and your fellow team members will be staying at a 4-star accommodation with safe, clean, comfortable rooms and upgraded amenities. You will be able to enjoy the local food, museums, and all the city has to offer.
All transportation to and from the clinic has been arranged for you. Professional drivers, safe vehicles, and security are some of the many reasons to join IMR on a trip. Don’t nap – there’s a lot to see in the valleys and hills surrounding your home away from home this week!
The team will also be able to visit the very famous Phezulu Zulu village where the world famous Gasa clan has, over the last 30 years, allowed visitors the opportunity to savor the taste and feel the rhythm of Africa. Visitors are taken into traditional beehive shaped thatched huts where the various artifacts, beliefs, and rituals are explained, giving foreigners an insight into the fascinating Zulu culture.
The team will experience the humble site of Nelson Mandela’s capture, where the internationally recognizable sculpture stands. As one of the historically important moments in the struggle against Apartheid, a marking of the site was needed which has now been realized and erected.
The team will get a true taste of South Africa with a traditional Braai, the typical South African barbecue complete with a wide selection of meats and the famous Chakalaka!
Durban itself is a world renowned beach town and home to some of the biggest waves and surfing competitions in the world. Take a stroll along the boardwalk for a chance to witness local surfers taking their chance on the big waves.

Education is as important as medical and dental care for our patients. Each clinic includes basic health education according to the specialties and skills of the IMR volunteers, as well as the needs of the local people. When communities become empowered to take health and wellness issues into their own hands, they become self-sufficient. IMR provides learning opportunities for the local communities through classes and hands-on learning to sustain their well-being beyond our visit.
Today will be your final day to provide compassionate care to the people – make today count! You are making a difference!
