Life’s Journey quilt

Life's Journey quilt top

On another quilting note, I had planned to take my Wild Thing quilt to the quilter, but decided not to.  I promised myself that I would be patient this year and start quilting my own quilts as much as possible so as to make my hobby more affordable.  So, this week I’m going to pin it and get started on it.  I haven’t done it yet because I keep waffling on how to quilt it.  (Don’t worry, it will be simple.  My skills are sorely lacking in this area!)  Wish me luck.

So, I begin another week with high ambitions.  We’ll see if I’m able to fit any of it in.  It’s worth a try!

Hope your day is great!

cute quilt! I almost called you yesterday about asking your opinion on doing a quilt but realized you have so much going on I really don’t need to bother you with my random thoughts. I kind of want to try to do one with bright colors, but I need your honest opinion if I should start with one like the one you did for me (I think you said you just do it off of some fat quarters) or if you think I could do something a bit crazier. I kind of want to do something crazy, but I may need to practice on a simpler one first- what do you think?

Hi sewists! Today I want to share with you some life lessons that I have learnt from quilting. Quilting is not only a fun and creative hobby, but also a great way to learn some valuable skills and insights that can apply to other areas of life. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, you can always benefit from the wisdom and skills that these crafts can teach you. Here are 12 life lessons that quilting has taught me:

  • Persistence. Quilting can be a challenging and time-consuming process, but it also teaches us to persevere and overcome obstacles. Whether it’s fixing a mistake, matching seams, or finishing a large project, quilting shows us that we can achieve anything if we keep working hard and don’t give up.
  • Patience. Quilting also requires patience, as we often have to wait for the results of our efforts. Sometimes we have to wait for fabric to arrive, for blocks to be pieced, for quilts to be quilted, or for bindings to be sewn. Quilting teaches us to enjoy the journey and not rush the outcome, and to appreciate the beauty of each step along the way. You also have to deal with mistakes, setbacks, and frustrations along the way. But patience pays off, as you will end up with a beautiful and unique project that you can be proud of.
  • Organization. Quilting helps us to develop organizational skills, as we have to plan our projects, sort our fabrics, cut our pieces, and store our tools. Quilting also encourages us to declutter and donate our scraps, or use them for smaller projects. Quilting shows us that being organized can make our lives easier and more efficient, and also more satisfying and rewarding.

life journey quilt

  • Finding joy. Quilting is a source of joy for many of us, as we get to express ourselves creatively and make something beautiful and useful. Quilting also brings us joy through the community of fellow quilters, who share our passion and support our endeavors. Quilting teaches us to find joy in the simple things, and to celebrate our achievements and those of others.
  • Learning new things. Quilting is a lifelong learning experience, as we always discover new techniques, patterns, fabrics, and tools. Quilting challenges us to try new things, experiment with different styles, and expand our horizons. Quilting shows us that learning new things can be fun and exciting, and that we can always improve our skills and knowledge.
  • Problem-solving. Quilting involves a lot of problem-solving, as we often have to deal with unexpected issues or difficulties. Sometimes we have to adjust our measurements, improvise with our materials, or fix our machines. Quilting teaches us to think creatively and logically, and to find solutions to any problem that comes our way. By sewing and quilting, you are developing your mental abilities and sharpening your mind.

life journey quilt

  • Self-expression. Quilting is a form of self-expression, as we get to choose our colors, fabrics, patterns, and designs. Quilting allows us to show our personality, preferences, and emotions through our creations. Quilting shows us that we are unique and original, and that we have something valuable to offer to the world.
  • Generosity. Quilting is a generous act, as we often make quilts for others, whether it’s for family, friends, or charity. Quilting allows us to share our love and care with others, and to make them feel special and appreciated. Quilting teaches us to be generous with our time, talent, and resources, and to spread kindness and happiness wherever we go.

life journey quilt

  • Relaxation. Quilting is a relaxing activity, as it helps us to unwind and calm our minds. Quilting can be a form of meditation, as we focus on the rhythm of the needle and the thread, or the sound of the machine. Quilting shows us that we can find peace and tranquility in our busy lives. . They also give you a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, and joy when you finish a project. By sewing and quilting, you are improving your mood and well-being.
  • Gratitude. Sewing is a way of expressing gratitude and can be a tribute to our ancestors, who passed on their traditions and skills to us. Quilting can also be a homage to the fabric makers, designers, quilters, and teachers who inspire us and enrich our lives. Quilting teaches us to be grateful for what we have, and for what we can do.

life journey quilt

  • Be sustainable. Sewing and quilting are eco-friendly hobbies, as you can reuse, recycle, and repurpose fabrics and materials that would otherwise go to waste. You can make quilts from old clothes, scraps, or thrift store finds. You can sew bags, pouches, or accessories from leftover fabrics or notions. You can also donate or gift your projects to others who need them. By sewing and quilting, you are reducing your environmental impact and giving new life to old things.
  • Community. Sewing and quilting are social hobbies, as they connect you with other people who share your passion and interest. You can join online groups or forums, local clubs or guilds, or classes or workshops where you can meet new friends, exchange ideas, get feedback, or learn new skills. You can also participate in events or activities such as swaps, challenges, or charity drives where you can contribute to a common cause or goal.

What people are saying..

I had only been quilting for about a year when I found your patterns. I had tried several other designers’ patterns before that, but they were so difficult to follow that I ended up giving up. Then I bought one of yours to try, really doubting I would be able to follow it because they LOOK so difficult. I was so WRONG – your block architecture and block pattern are the most well-written and easiest to follow that I have ever seen! Now I buy all of them when they are released. Can’t wait to see what you have next for us.

Journeys quilt pattern is ready!

Last October I shared my new Journeys quilt with you, along with the promise that the finished pattern would be ready sometime in 2022. The process to complete a quilt pattern can be slow and tedious . . . designing, writing, testing, sewing, editing, retesting, sewing some more, editing some more, photographing, proofing and editing. I won’t lie, by the end of the process, I really begin to dislike my boss (me). But in the end, when I have an original quilt to share with you, it’s all worth it. The Journeys quilt pattern is officially ready!

life journey quilt

You can read all about the Journeys quilt and why it’s so special to me here .

The pattern is available as  digital PDF on my Etsy Shop .  It’s a great pattern for showcasing a beautiful collection of fat quarters!

life journey quilt

Here are some quick facts:

  • Finished Size: 69” x 77”
  • Feature fabrics in my sample quilt: 18 fat quarters from Art Gallery Fabrics, designers included: Sharon Holland ,  Bonnie Christine ,  Maureen Cracknell and  Amy Sinibaldi .  (The backing fabric was from Bonnie Christine’s Open Road collection.)
  • Background fabric: Moda’s  Indigo Chambray
  • Quilting:  Woods Edge Quilting of Becker, MN

And here are the fabric requirements:

18 fat quarters ……… Top & scrappy binding*

Neutral …………………. 3 1/2 yards

Backing ………………… 4 3/4 yards

*Binding ……………….. 5/8 yard (If you do not wish to make a scrappy binding from the fat quarter fabric, then you will need 5/8 yard.)

I hate to be a tease, but I made a second sample of Journeys featuring Christmas fabric !  I used the Christmas Morning collection by Lella Boutique, which is gorgeous.  Here’s a sneak peek photo from when I was just getting started.  Once it has been quilted and bound, I’ll share a full reveal.

Have a great day!

Don’t be too hard on your “boss”! 🙂 She designed a beautiful quilt.

Hee hee! Thanks Kathy. I’ll go easy on her. She’s a pretty decent boss.

Tell your “boss” that she did a good job motivating you, and I’ve already bought my copy of the new pattern. It looks really fun to make, and when I saw the Christmas fat quarters, you had me!

Oh thank you so much! I hope you love the project! 🙂 Happy sewing to you!

I do love your Journey’s Quilt. Anxious to see the finish on your Christmas quilt.

Thanks so much Nancy!

I too, stray from blue, but it’s so beautiful, like the sky or the lake that we love. I couldn’t agree with you more on our precious time with our children, Luke is a great quilt holder!

Thanks so much, dear friend! I’m so lucky that you always “get” me and we have so much in common, including great children who mean the world to us!

Gorgeous as always! I keep saying I am NOT purchasing more patterns, but, YOU are making this effort VERY difficult! 🤣

Hee hee! I love being a bad influence! 😉

Journey Quilt Company

Once Upon a Time…

While in the midst of a spring-cleaning blitz, a serious discussion was had (with myself) about the need to keep old t-shirts that I no longer wore.  As a US Navy veteran and huge fan of world travel, a fair number of memorabilia shirts were stuffed in drawers and hung in closets, all just taking up valuable space.  They were eventually relocated to a giant plastic tub in the garage, but they weren’t going anywhere.  I simply could not part with them!

After months of thinking, drawing, staring, contemplating and planning, I grabbed scissors and did it!  I made my first t-shirt quilt using the ‘Mosaic’ style that I had devised.  My Mosaic version solved a lot of problems that the traditional methods of t-shirt quilting had.  This method has since been revised and refined to artistic precision but, I loved my original quilt…flaws and all!

Journey Quilt's first Quilt

This was over 20 years ago!

Since then, my little project has evolved into a career for me and an answer to the same question that so many people have.

“What do I do with all these treasured keepsake t-shirts that I no longer wear but cannot bear to part with??”

The answer is in Journey Quilt Company’s Mission Statement:

The transformation of t-shirts and traditional clothing into cohesive, personalized quilts is the foundation of Journey Quilt Company.  Each original work must encompass sentimental value, artistic design, everyday functionality, and long-term durability.  We exist only because ‘Today’s Adventures are Tomorrow’s Irreplaceable Memories.’

From myself, our employees (artisans, really) and Greta the shop dog, we invite you to visit and tour our showroom and studio to see for yourself how we can preserve and protect some of life’s most precious memories for yourself and those you love.

Until then, happy adventures!

Trish Maxwell

Oh, and just in case you were wondering…Yes! I still curl up with my very first t-shirt quilt…every day.

Journey Quilt Pattern

When I received this pattern , I imagined that I must be expecting a gift. But instead of a gift, there was a large envelope addressed to me. Inside the envelope was a brown cardboard package. As I opened it, I pulled out a beautiful pattern!

I had never made a quilt like this before, but I fell in love with the idea of creating a relaxing and peaceful quilt. I researched some extra quilt patterns and found the “Journey Quilt Pattern”. This pattern seemed perfect for my goal of creating a relaxing quilt for me and my children.

The “Journey Quilt Pattern” is easy to follow and involves only a few basic stitches. It is also quite versatile, which means that you can improvise and customize the quilt in your own way.

After finishing the quilt, I realized that it could serve as a good gift for someone else. So I sent the quilt to my friend and wished her a “Journey Quilt Pattern”.

The colors and design of the pattern as said is very simple to make despite being a pattern considered intermediate I believe that even a person who has already started in the sewing business has the ability to make it, in fact this pattern is very beautiful and simple to do.

One tip that I will give you about this pattern is to avoid printed fabrics, with flowers or something like that, of course the fabric idea is yours, but you can do it according to your taste. Using plain fabrics is more important because it reflects the idea of being in the water, in the sea, in the lake, and thus generates that tranquility and peace that the pattern wants to convey.

Who doesn’t love a beautiful quilt? I am always looking for new patterns and patterns to knit, and wondering how much fun it would be to create my own quilt patterns. Fortunately, there are many good websites that offer free patterns.

Among the top sites that offer free quilt patterns are Quilters Cache, Ashbee Design, and McCall’s Quilting. At Quilters Cache, you can search by category, style, or technique. There is also a whole section dedicated to free patterns.

Ashbee Design has a wide variety of free patterns, ranging from simple to sophisticated. In addition to patterns, the site also offers videos on how to make quilts.

McCall’s Quilting is one of my favorite quilt sites. They offer a large number of free patterns, ranging from traditional to modern. In addition to the patterns, the site also offers instructions on how to make quilts.

Getting a free pattern is a good way to start making quilts. If you have never made a quilt before, start with a simple pattern. Once you have gotten used to the process, you can start experimenting with other patterns.

So if you have never made a quilt before, or if you are looking for new ideas for your quilts, try one of the sites above and get a free pattern.

If you are looking for an easy-to-follow pattern to create a relaxing quilt, the “Journey of Peace” pattern is an excellent choice. You can receive the pattern for free by clicking here in free-quilting.com . File saved from Viruses and Spam. Your pattern will be sent to your email. Get Download Link

“Life’s  a  Journey - Quilt  It”

Jackie Mowday

Jackie retired as an OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner in 2018 after 38 years in the medical field. She spent 9 years on active duty in the     Air Force. Her dream job since retiring has been to teach others how to quilt and to instill in them the love of quilting and so

"Journey Quilting" was founded.

Jackie first learned how to sew at the age of 9 and later went on to have her own home business making children’s clothing when her children were young. She got hooked on quilting in 1998 when her mother took her to her first quilt show. Then in 2008 she met Deb Tucker for the 1st time when she took Deb’s Rapid Fire Hunter Star class. From that point on Jackie fell in love with Studio 180 Design tools because of their precision and accuracy in piecing quilts. Jackie was excited to become a Studio 180 Design Certified Instructor in 2014. Jackie just loves teaching and watching the excitement on her students' faces when they make that first cut

and see the precision they can achieve using the Studio 180 Design tools. She also has quilts published in Deb Tucker’s 2 books,

  Hidden Treasures and Royal Treasures.

In her spare time she loves spending time with her grandchildren, quilting and spending time in the outdoors.

Longarm Quilting Services

Jackie started longarm quilting in 2009 when she bought a Handiquilter Fusion Longarm. She does both Edge to Edge quilting and free motion custom quilting.  She loves working with her customers to get their quilts finished.

Then you need to consider joining Tucker University! The next 3 month series will include the Large Square Squared, Diamond Rects and Corner Pop tools.

In the grand theater of life, we often find ourselves playing roles that demand resilience, strength, and an unwavering spirit. The journey of a tough kid is a testament to this universal truth. This narrative is a deep dive into the life of a resilient individual who has learned to handle life’s challenges with grace and tenacity. The story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of authenticity, and the transformative potential of the ‘fake it till you make it’ philosophy — you’ll hear this again and again, right here — so you can “hear” it.

The making of a tough kid

The journey begins with the birth of a tough kid. This is not a physical birth but rather a metaphorical one, born out of the crucible of life’s challenges. The tough kid is not born out of privilege or ease but instead of struggle and adversity. They are the product of their circumstances, molded by the trials they have faced and the battles they have fought.

The tough kid is not defined by their toughness but rather by their ability to handle whatever life throws at them. They are resilient, not because they are impervious to pain or hardship, but because they have learned to endure it. They have learned to take life’s punches and keep moving forward, to fall down seven times and stand up eight. This resilience is not innate but rather a skill honed and developed over time. It is a testament to their strength, courage, and indomitable spirit.

The power of perseverance

The journey of a tough kid is marked by perseverance — another piece of being resilient. They understand that success is not a destination but rather a journey. They know that the road to success is often paved with failure and that each failure is a stepping stone towards their ultimate goal. They understand that success is not about never falling but getting up each time they fall.

The tough kid does not shy away from failure. Instead, they embrace it, learn from it, and use it as fuel to propel them forward. They understand that failure is not a reflection of their worth but rather a part of their journey. They know that the only true failure is not trying, and so they keep pushing, striving, and persevering, no matter what.

The ‘fake it till you make it’ philosophy

The journey of a tough kid is also marked by the ‘fake it till you make it’ philosophy. This is not about deception or dishonesty but rather about belief and manifestation. The tough kid understands that in order to achieve their goals, they must first believe in their ability to achieve them. They must envision their success, believe in it, and work tirelessly to make it a reality.

The ‘fake it till you make it’ philosophy is about acting as if you are already where you want to be. It’s about embodying the qualities and behaviors of the person you aspire to be, even if you’re not there yet. It’s about believing in your potential, even when others doubt you. It’s about proving to yourself that you are capable, even when the odds are stacked against you.

The tough kid understands that this philosophy is not about pretending to be someone they’re not but rather about becoming the person they want to be. They understand it’s not about faking success but manifesting it. They know that the journey to success is not about becoming someone else but rather about becoming the best version of themselves.

The journey of a tough kid is a testament to the power of resilience , the importance of authenticity, and the transformative potential of the ‘fake it till you make it’ philosophy. It is a journey marked by struggle, adversity, strength, and perseverance. It is a journey that reminds us that we are not defined by our circumstances but rather by how we respond to them. It is a journey that inspires us to embrace our challenges, to believe in our potential, and to keep moving forward, no matter what.

In the grand theater of life, we are all tough kids, learning to handle life’s challenges with grace and tenacity. We are all on a journey, striving to become the best versions of ourselves. In this journey, we are reminded that we are not alone, are all in this together, and are capable of achieving our goals, no matter how lofty they may seem.

Texas 4-H wraps current, former military members in Quilts of Valor

Ongoing project through under our wings incorporates sewing skills with military appreciation  .

April 24, 2024

Texas 4-H youth are literally wrapping current and former U.S. military members in a tangible – and very warm – expression of their appreciation for their service.

The Texas 4-H Program has partnered with the National Quilts of Valor Foundation to initiate a youth branch of the Quilts of Valor, QOV, organization in the state.

A large group photo of individuals holding up squares for a quilt. The squares are replicas of the U.S. flag and are red white and blue.

As the designated Under Our Wings Program partner for the state, Texas 4-H is working with the foundation on a youth-based service effort in which young people in grades 3-12 learn the art of quilting to create unique, patriotically themed quilts to be awarded to deserving active-duty and veteran military members.

“This is a service-learning project that incorporates the skills building of sewing, textiles and quilt-making with the act of community service for youth,” said Angela McCorkle, 4-H and youth development program specialist for the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service , which administers the Texas 4-H program.

McCorkle said Texas 4-H members who participate in this project learn not only about quilting but also about the veterans themselves, the importance of service and sacrifice, and history.

She added that the project is also “a truly intergenerational effort” in that youth learn from quilters, many of whom are older, and from adults who have served in the military.

McCorkle said because May is Military Appreciation Month, it is important to acknowledge the efforts of Texas 4-H youth in helping recognize and show appreciation for active-duty and veteran former military service members through though the Quilts of Valor project.

“These quilts are heartfelt expressions of appreciation and love, symbolizing the deep respect we have for those who have selflessly served our country.” — Jheri-Lynn McSwain, Ph.D.

Quilt recipient selection, recognition

Since July, Texas 4-H has initiated several Under Our Wings QOV projects throughout the state. Along with multiple projects implemented by county 4-H clubs, it has implemented projects involving 4-H members in multiple counties and states.

life journey quilt

“Once Texas 4-H members make a quilt, they send in a nomination form for an area active-duty or veteran military member to receive it,” McCorkle said. “Once a selection is made, an official Quilts of Valor label is stitched onto the quilt with information about who the quilt was awarded to and the group making the quilt. And because Texas 4-H is an official partner with QOV, the label also has our official 4-H clover design.”

When the 4-H member club or group awards a quilt to a veteran, a special ceremony is held in which the veteran is literally wrapped in the quilt by the people who made it.

“These quilts are heartfelt expressions of appreciation and love, symbolizing the deep respect we have for those who have selflessly served our country,” said Jheri-Lynn McSwain, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension youth development specialist for District 5.

So far, some 50 quilts have been created and awarded to military service members living in Texas.

Texas 4-H involvement in Quilts of Valor

Each AgriLife Extension region of the state will host a 4-H Quilts of Valor Sew Day in which 4-H youth and others can learn about the program and sew blocks for a county quilt top to be presented to a local military veteran.

In September, the 4-H Under Our Wings program and the Shelby Sewcial Bee Quilting Club sponsored a Quilts of Valor Sew Day kickoff event in Center.

4-H youth in Shelby County award veterans quilts from Quilts of Valor project

“Quilts made through these efforts were awarded to 20 veterans at the annual East Texas Poultry Festival,” said McSwain, who serves as Texas 4-H Under Our Wings Quilts of Valor program committee chair and coordinator. “In Shelby County, Texas 4-H partnered with VFW Post 8904 to receive nominations for prospective recipients and to assist in the quilt presentation.”

Shelby County also holds a Quilts of Valor Sew Day each quarter, inviting area youth and adults to participate.

“Through this service, 4-H members not only learn practical skills but also develop a sense of civic responsibility and empathy, shaping them into compassionate and engaged citizens of their communities,” McSwain said.

She said the effort also helps bridge the intergenerational gap between young people and older people at the local level, fostering an understanding between the generations while helping to strengthen communities by encouraging positive exchanges.

“It was an honor to receive this quilt and to be on stage with fellow veterans who also received a quilt,” said Vietman veteran Mike Wulf, who served in the Army. “It was especially meaningful since many people who served in Vietnam have not been recognized for their service. I was thrilled to be selected for this special recognition.”

Individual and group sewers join the effort

Texas 4-H members in Rusk County with components for Quilts of Valor quilts.

In Rusk County, Texas 4-H member Amelie White, working with AgriLife Extension’s county agent for family and community health, Liz Buckner-Cross, and adult volunteers, recently produced three quilts to be awarded to WWII veterans in their county during Military Appreciation Month.

“I’ve always been good at sewing,” said White, a member of the 4-H Livestock Club of Rusk County who also serves as a Texas 4-H fashion and interior design ambassador. “This program has allowed me to teach others that skill. And it’s cool that we can recognize these military people by making quilts for them.”

Buckner-Cross said their efforts in Rusk County have received community-wide support.

“Along with the quilters and quilting organization, local youth and adults have pitched in to help make the quilts,” she said. “And we’ve also gotten a lot of support from volunteers with the Texas Extension Education Association.”

4-H members from several states making Quilts of Valor quilt squares at FCS competition and and conference in San Antonio

In Bexar County, During the 4-H Family and Consumer Science National Championship and Conference in Bexar County in January, some 40 4-H members from 18 states participated in a Quilts of Valor community service project.

“Not only Texas 4-H members, but 4-H members from Oregon, California, Tennessee, North Dakota and many other states were involved in this project,” said Natalie Cervantes, AgriLife Extension youth development specialist for the agency’s Central Texas District. “The 4-H organization emphasizes community service, and this was an example of like-minded young people working together on a project to recognize and honor our military.”

Upcoming Texas 4-H Quilts of Valor service projects

The Texas 4-H program is developing an annual Quilt Block Challenge tied to Quilts of Valor.

“Basically, we release a quilt block design that the members can replicate to produce a quilt,” said McSwain. “The quilt block design will be a patriotic theme so these quilts can be awarded to veterans. Texas 4-H clubs or groups or entire counties can produce a quilt.”

She said the 2024-2025 quilt challenge pattern has been released for Texas 4-H project leaders planning to incorporate the Under Our Wings project as a community service component during their summer 4-H camps.

A Quilts of Valor community service project day is scheduled during the annual Texas 4-H Roundup on the Texas A&M campus in College Station. On June 4, Texas 4-H youth from throughout the state will gather in a room on the upper level of Reed Arena to make quilt blocks to be used in assembling a quilt to be awarded to a local military service member.

About Quilts of Valor

Quilts of Valor is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization providing patriotically themed quilts stitched by volunteers to active-duty and veteran service members as a token of appreciation for their service. The organization is sponsored by local businesses, civic clubs and individuals, but quilts are fashioned by volunteers around the U.S. and internationally.

The quilts can only be awarded to an active-duty service person or honorably discharged military veteran. A veteran can only receive one quilt in a lifetime, and all quilts are registered with the foundation.

Quilts of Valor has provided more than 380,000 quilts to active-duty and veteran members of the U.S. military service.

The journey of a lifetime

Sharing a note I sent to our Atlassian employees earlier today

Scott Farquhar

Co-Founder and Co-CEO

life journey quilt

It’s been 23 years since Mike and I started Atlassian, fresh out of university. We got to work on the heels of the dot com bust and unbeknownst to us, we were kickstarting the Australian tech industry. We started what is now known as ‘Product Led Growth’ by selling business software online with no salespeople, and 23 years later, we continue to innovate by leading the world as the largest company committed to remote work with Team Anywhere.

Today, rockets don’t launch into orbit without Atlassian’s software 🚀. From helping to land the Mars Rover, to ensuring cars roll off the production line and Domino’s pizzas are delivered on time, to life-saving medical procedures being tracked and managed in hospitals, our solutions are woven into the fabric of teamwork worldwide. We’re unleashing the potential of teams in every corner of the world (and beyond!).

And while there is never a perfect time to make this change, I take comfort in my decision knowing Atlassian is so well placed for the future. We have a world-class cloud platform and the best team we’ve ever had. Our new Point A products are gaining real traction, AI is providing new and exciting opportunities, and we have over 300,000 cloud customers consolidating around Atlassian.

There are very few companies in the world that can play (and win) in the huge markets we do, with the incredible opportunities at our feet. The future has never looked brighter ✨.

Beyond the outward impact, it’s Atlassian’s soul that brings me the most joy. People say there’s something special about this place – something hard to put your finger on. Atlassians really, truly, deeply care about each other and for doing the right thing for one another, for our customers, and for the planet.

As for me, I’m looking forward to spending some time with my young family, improving the world via philanthropy with Skip Foundation and Pledge 1%, investing with Skip Capital, as well as mentoring other tech CEOs.

My last day as co-CEO will be Aug 31, 2024, and after that, I will remain a board member and a special advisor.

Finally, while there will be plenty of time for long thank yous and goodbyes over the next four months, I can’t let this opportunity go by without recognising and thanking my co-founder Mike. Mike, it’s hard to put into words the gratitude I feel, and my love for all we have created together. You really are George Bernard Shaw’s Unreasonable Man, and the world and I are better as a result 🙏.

Top Indian Star Katrina Kaif Recounts Her Cinematic Journey: ‘Film Would Become My Entire Life’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Katrina Kaif

The times are changing across Indian cinema and Katrina Kaif , one of the top stars of the country, is changing with them.

The top 10 Indian films in the post-pandemic year 2023 were all star-driven blockbusters and Kaif was in the mix with Bollywood action extravaganza “ Tiger 3 ,” the latest in Yash Raj Films’ spy universe, where she starred alongside Salman Khan. 2024 has seen a paradigm shift in that, with five of the top 10 films being what are known locally as “content films,” where a strong storyline takes precedence over spectacle.

Popular on Variety

“I was in love with the book. I was just like, ‘Wow,’ I mean, it was everything you wanted in this space. It was tender, poetic, it had that very mysterious Hitchcockian quality to it. It had drama, it had mystery, it had murder, it had everything in the most unique and novel way,” Kaif told Variety over a zoom call from Mumbai.

With six sisters scattered around the globe and her mother running a school for underprivileged children in southern India, Kaif had a peripatetic childhood. At the age of 18, she became a model in India and was soon rubbing shoulders with the best in the business. Films inevitably followed. Her acting debut, 2003 crime thriller “Boom,” was a critical and commercial disaster despite the presence of Bollywood heavyweights Amitabh Bachchan and Jackie Shroff. It is clear that Kaif has expunged the film from her memory. When asked to recount her cinematic journey Kaif says: “I think my first foray was in a South Indian film, a Telugu film actually [2004 romcom “Malliswari” where she plays the titular role of a wealthy heiress]. And from there, I started getting on-camera experience and then working my way slowly, meeting directors, producers. I felt that I had done what I wanted to do in the modeling industry, I felt ‘okay, I’ve understood the scene.’ I had a few targets and goals and I’d achieved those. And for me, my desire and my heart was in the movies.”

Upon the suggestion of filmmaker Dharmesh Darshan, Kaif, who is now known for her exceptional dancing skills, underwent intense training under the late guru Veeru Krishnan, who was an exponent of the Kathak dance form. “Dance is one thing, but I feel like Kathak is about expression. It’s about a feeling, it’s about expressing yourself through music. And that, for me was my foundation for movies,” Kaif says. “It was about understanding the emotion and the language of cinema. I was almost quiet, a little timid, very naive, I wasn’t sure of my identity in terms of what was my voice, my expression as a girl, as a woman. I was very young. So, I think that really helped me find my voice.”

Kaif also benefited from the sage advise of co-star Anil Kapoor (“Slumdog Millionaire”) on the sets of “Humko Deewana Kar Gaye” (2006) who told her to get into the headspace of the scene they were about to perform, rather than walking back and forth. “Having been surrounded by thespians, I was like a sponge, I was very eager to learn, and very open, I was not a person who ever had any airs or preconceived notions,” Kaif says.

Significant success followed. Kaif counts drama-romance “Namastey London” (2007) and comedies “Welcome” (2007) and “Singh Is King” (2008) among the highlights of her early career. Thriller “New York” (2009) was a turning point, Kaif says. The actor also lists comedy “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” (2009), political drama “Rajneeti” (2010) and coming-of-age film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” (2011) as her standout films of that time.

The next chapter in Kaif’s journey featured big-budget high octane action films, including “Ek Tha Tiger” (2012) that kicked off the immensely successful spy universe, “Dhoom 3” (2013) and “Bang Bang” (2014). “I was doing exactly what I wanted to do. These were the filmmakers I wanted to work with,” Kaif says. Kaif’s love affair with dance also continued, with her being actively involved in the choreography. The actor also rates her work in action-adventure “Jagga Jasoos” (2017), drama “Zero” (2018) and cop film “Sooryavanshi” (2021), which was the first major Bollywood theatrical release post-COVID.

Meanwhile, the spy universe continued with “Tiger Zinda Hai” (2017) and “Ek Tha Tiger” (2023). A sequence set in a hammam (Turkish bath) is a particular highlight for the actor. “For me dance and action are similar in that sense – I need to be in there, I have to execute it,” Kaif says, adding that she rarely uses stunt doubles. The hammam sequence is a case in point where Kaif executed all the action herself as her double came down with COVID-19.

Kaif’s train of thought is interrupted as her phone rings. It’s her husband, the actor Vicky Kaushal . She’ll call him back later. Kaushal is also a perfect example of a changing Bollywood where the story can take precedence over spectacle. His 2023 filmography includes an extended appearance in top 10 hit, immigration drama “Dunki,” playing the lead in military hero biopic “Sam Bahadur” and headlining small-town romcom “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke.”

In 2023, the Indian film industry grew 14% to reach a value of $2.3 billion, within which theatrical revenues reached an all-time high of $1.4 billion. The number of screens grew 4% and fewer films released directly on digital platforms. Kaif’s current trajectory mirrors that growth.

“I’ve always put the audiences first and have tried to with my choices throughout my career. And now I think it’s about finding a balance, what story do I feel is going to connect with the audience? And what do I connect to personally and as an actor right now? What’s going to give me growth? What’s going to give me satisfaction? This is just exactly what I want to be doing right now,” Kaif says.

The West came calling recently, but circumstances at the time meant that Kaif had to turn the offer down. “I do believe it will happen, and I think that will be a whole new leaf in my book, so to speak, and really exciting,” Kaif says.
