Kat Riggins

Live at blues fest 2023.

LeClaire Park 400 Beiderbecke Dr, Davenport , IA 52802

MVBS.org is proud to welcome Kat Riggins to Blues Fest 2023. Inspired by the variety and abundance of music in her parents’ collection, it makes sense that her own music is peppered with hints of R&B, soul, country, gospel, hip-hop, and rock-n-roll. Make no mistake; however, Kat Riggins is undeniably a BLUES WOMAN! She travels the world with the sole mission of keeping the blues alive and thriving through her Blues Revival Movement.

Full of power, rasp, and grit she can belt out one of her contemporary blues originals one minute, then deliver a tender, sultry standard the next. She does this all while making each person in her audience feel as if she is speaking directly to them. Blues Revivals are interactive and personal, no matter how large the crowd. This intimacy is what makes every Blues Revival a memorable experience…not only for the audience, but for Kat. Come see the show at 3:30pm on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the 2023 Blues Fest!

Kat Riggins & Her Blues Revival

October 27, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

kat riggins tour 2023

“This ain’t no concert. It’s a PARTY”, exclaims Kat Riggins as she encourages her audience to cut loose. Backed by a dynamic band, Kat’s extraordinary show will get your mojo workin’ with high energy originals along with some of your favorite down home blues standards! With a refreshing, and unapologetically authentic approach, Kat writes songs that hope to uplift, enlighten and inspire. With intentional lyricism and extraordinary musicianship, whether it’s your hips, your heart, or both… YOU WILL BE MOVED at a Blues Revival!

PERFORMER BIO: Inspired by the variety and abundance of music in her parents’ collection, it makes sense that her own original music is peppered with hints of R&B, soul, country, gospel, hip-hop, and rock-n-roll. Make no mistake; however, Kat Riggins is undeniably a BLUES WOMAN! She travels the world with the sole mission of keeping the blues alive and thriving through her Blues Revival Movement.

What is a “Blues Revival” anyway? According to Kat, it is a musical revolution that aims to awaken the masses and introduce them to the sincerity behind Blues music. “It’s about the raw emotion in every note”, says Kat Riggins as she attempts to describe her love of the genre. Kat Riggins & her Blues Revival invoke said emotion through high energy soul shakers as well as heartbreaking ballads. During a meet and greet after a sold out show in Belgium, a fan once jokingly asked Kat if ever there was a time she “phoned it in” to avoid ending up exhausted and sweaty by the end of the night… “If I can move someone to feel what I feel when I sing a song, then it’s all worth it”, answered the singer-songwriter.

She has been vocally compared to Koko Taylor, Etta James and Tina Turner to name a few. While obviously influenced by those icons, Mrs Riggins has a voice and delivery all her own. Full of power, rasp and grit she can belt out one of her contemporary Blues originals one minute, then deliver a tender, sultry standard the next. She does this all while making each person in her audience feel as if she is speaking directly to them. Blues Revivals are interactive and personal no matter how large the crowd. This intimacy is what makes every Blues Revival a memorable experience…not only for the audience, but for Kat.

Born Katriva Riggins in Miami, Florida on February 7, 1980. She grew up in a household where there was always background music. As a result, Kat developed a love for all types of music.

She was specifically drawn to the smoky gritty sounds of artists like Bessie Smith, Sam Cooke, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Denise LaSalle, Ray Charles, Koko Taylor, Mavis Staples, Tracy Chapman, Janis Joplin and the list goes on. She grew up singing in local programs, church events, and family gatherings with her sister and cousins. At age 23 Kat landed a gig singing jazz and blues standards in a small lounge in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida with the accompaniment of only a piano player. Fast forward to today, and she has since performed with extraordinary musicians throughout the United States, Southeast Asia, the U.A.E., the Dutch Antilles and Europe.

In 2018 and 2019 Kat was featured in the Johan Derksen Keeps the Blues Alive tour, which stole the hearts of theatre-goers in sold out shows throughout The Netherlands and Belgium. She has also appeared on two of the highest rated prime time television shows on Dutch TV ( Voetbal Inside and PAUW) where she mesmerized millions of viewers and helped to introduce the Blues to hoards of new fans!

With her first two works (an EP called “Seoul Music” and an original album called “Lily Rose”), Kat penned each song with subtle hints of her love of the blues. Her follow-up album, aptly named after her movement “Blues Revival”, however, is a loud and proud declaration of that love! “Blues Revival” is a clever mash-up of gospel-Blues, Blues-rock, Blues- soul, funky Blues, contemporary and traditional Blues, with BLUES being the operative word! Her third album (“In the Boys’ Club”) is an homage to the Blues women who came before her, a shout out to those who walk beside her, and most importantly, it is an encouragement for those women in Blues who will come after.

In January of 2020 Mike Zito and Guy Hale welcomed Kat Riggins to their Gulf Coast Records family! Kat’s debut album on the record label earned the artist her first Blues Music Award nomination. In addition to the BMA nod for Contemporary Blues Album, the “Cry Out” project won Kat two Independent Blues Awards (Contemporary Blues Album and Contemporary Blues Band) and it continues to receive rave reviews! Kat was honored to score her 2ND BMA nomination the following year for Blues Soul Artist Female! Kat’s second release on the label, “Progeny”, debut at lucky #13 on the Billboard Blues charts to critical acclaim! This powerful record got Kat her first Blues Blast Awards nomination, and garnered 2 BMA nominations from The Blues Foundation ( for Soul Blues Album of the Year and Soul Blues Female). “Progeny” was also considered for a GRAMMY nomination by The Recording Academy and continues to be well received worldwide. It is said to be the singer- songwriter’s best to date, by critics and fans alike.

With these and albums to come, Kat Riggins’s Blues Revival Movement endeavors to be a part of this musical revolution that aims to awaken the masses and introduce them to the sincerity behind Blues music!

“Not unreconstructed but not modern just for the sake of it… The spiritual granddaughter of Koko Taylor and southern blues show bands, Riggins has the stone-cold knack for hitting it out of the park that would make all the blues greats before her quite proud.” – Midwest Records
“A petite vocalist with a potent delivery and electrifying voice, Kat Riggins holds nothing back…” – Blues Blast Magazine

Kat Riggins is an American contemporary blues, soul and R&B singer/songwriter

Kat Riggins is an American contemporary blues, soul and R&B singer/songwriter

Kat Riggins’ Blues Revival Movement gathered together for a celebration of her latest release, a modernized trip into blues, “Progeny” which was released June 24, 2022 on Gulf Coast Records. The album, a sonically hearty spread of delicious tracks with blues roots. Her contemporary blues style contains flavors of rock, soul, R&B, gospel & hip-hop. Although she identifies as a blues music artist, her musical offerings certainly carry you across several genres of the musical spectrum. She was recently nominated for a 2022 Blues Music Award in the Soul Blues – Female artist category.

You may notice some sonic familiarity in this release. Kat has an award winning ensemble of musicians backing the power of her soulful vocals. Mike Zito brings his seasoned electric blues guitar licks, Matthew Johnson on drums, Doug Byrkit holds in down on bass & Lewis Stephens, an original member of the Freddie King Band on keys. You’ll also hear special guests: The “Big Dog” Albert Castiglia on guitar along with Busta Free who raps in the tribute to her home town of Miami in, “My City.” The song “Woahman” features guitarist Melody Angel.

People of all sorts, smiling faces fill the room, leaning up against walls, congregating together in multiple rows at the bar. The temperature inside grows warmer & warmer as the congregation grows. Even as the show begins, the excited concert goers continue to pack the venue.

The show is on and the seats are full, the bar is full, there is standing room only & the sea of joyful faces makes it obvious they are happy to be there, showing love & support for Kat & her new album. Kat’s strong soulful voice transporting itself up, over & through the walls, doors & windows. You receive a kinetic delivery of every single song. Not only do you hear the music, you see it channeled & delivered to you in every shimmy, shake & move she makes on stage.

There is not a shortage of love & gratitude in this room & no space or time for anything but positivity. Even in a room filled to the rafters with people, Kat has the ability to make you feel as if you are the most important person in the room. Her charisma shines bright as the South Florida sun.

Kat & her team which includes her wife, Victoria Nunez whom you will find does anything & everything to keep Kat’s shows running without a hitch. Putting together an event of this magnitude is no small feat, she makes it seem like second nature, no sweat. However, in this case, everyone was sweating, this performance was fire.

When we covered the release of her previous album, “Cry Out” in August of 2020, the event was a socially distanced drive-in style concert. We were still wearing masks, there was no vaccine against the COVID-19 Virus & the future of live music was impossible to predict. “Thriving & Surviving in the Time of the Coronavirus,” was the title. A testament to the fact that if you want something enough, you can & will find a way to make it happen.

The experience of this album release party was a complete opposite of the one prior. There was social closeness, the sea of visible smiles shows that people need the pressures of daily life released in the way you only receive from a shared live music experience. Kat’s Blues Revival Movement & her latest release, “Progeny” pulls you out of the ordinary & gives a full body immersion into the extraordinary.

“Yes I know, I ain’t in this thing alone.” -Kat Riggins

Kat Riggins was born Katriva Riggins in Miami, Florida on February 7, 1980. She grew up in a household where there was always background music. Because of the wide range of genres in her parents collection, Kat developed a love for all types of music from gospel and soul to country and rock and everything in between.

She was drawn to the smokey gritty sounds of artists like Bessie Smith, Sam Cooke, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Denise LaSalle, Etta James, Ray Charles, Koko Taylor, Janis Joplin and the list goes on. She grew up singing in local programs, church events, and family gatherings with her sister and cousins. At age 23 Kat landed a gig singing jazz and blues standards in a small lounge in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida with the accompaniment of only a piano player. Since then she has performed throughout Florida, New Orleans, Vietnam, Thailand, China, South Korea, Curacao, Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands so far.

Kat's own musical style is a blend of the blues with hip hop, pop, rock, gospel and even country music.

With her first two works, an EP called "Seoul Music" and an original album called "Lily Rose" Kat penned each song with subtle hints of her love of the blues. Her album, aptly named after her band "Blues Revival" is a loud and proud declaration of that love! "Blues Revival" is a clever mashup of gospel-blues, blues-rock, funky blues, contemporary and traditional blues, with BLUES being the operative word! With this and albums to come, Kat Riggins's focus is to be a part of this musical revolution that aims to awaken the masses and introduce them to the sincerity behind blues music.

Her European September 2017 tour was something to remember! With shows in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and lots of great reviews and comments.

2018 saw her touring frequently with the ''Johan Derksen keeps the blues alive'' Theater Tour. And she and her ''Blues Revival did several club gigs and festival gigs all over Europe. Also in 2019 Kat Riggins was part of the Dutch Theatre Blues Tour with Johan Derksen, a true blues ambassador from the Netherlands. With her Dutch Blues Revival Band she did more than 20 shows.

And 2020? A tour in France was planned for April. But canceled due to Corona. Same for September / October / November ... all tour dates canceled !! THE GOOD THING: She got a record deal with Gulf Coast Records [Mike Zito]. ''Cry Out'' was her first album for the label.

2022 started well !

A 'one week' tour in Switzerland in March.

A festival gig in Switzerland, followed by a gig at the famous Holland International Blues Festival in June [both gigs with the Mike Zito Band !]

And . . . her brand new album, called ''Progeny'' [Gulf Coast Records].

September Kat Riggins and her Dutch band were booked in Sweden for almost 2 weeks. 8 shows booked.

And finally, in November she was back for shows in The Netherlands, Belgium and France.

2023 took her to France [End of April, early May].
