Avion is actually a defunct line of trailers by Fleetwood, whereas the Airstream is a more modern rendition. They have many similarities so much so the Avion is referred to as the Airstream’s second cousin. There are some significant differences between them, which are as follows:

• The Airstream has more modern fitting – Given Avion is no longer in production, its counterpart is basically fitted with more modern, smart controls.
• Avion has a better build quality – While not profound, Airstream’s aluminum exterior is lighter and slightly less durable than Avion.
• Airstream has less storage space – Cubby Holes and overhead bins found within the Avion line is significantly more spacious and offers a larger open outlet.
• Avion is less comparatively less expensive – Airstreams will be generally more expensive but has the virtue of being new. Avion models are usually revamped by sellers but will have a few years on them.

Avion Travel Trailers

Avion Trailers were first manufactured in 1956 by the now-defunct Fleetwood company. When searching for trailers, you’d like to look at the model with the seller’s information in order to know the exact features. Models of Avion Travel Trailers by its manufacture year include:

One of the prime reasons Avion holds a special space in the hearts of trailer enthusiasts is its aluminum build and its unique features.

The aluminum skin gave the trailer a modern-looking mirror finish while amping up its resistance factor.  The units are generally satin-finished Anodized Aluminium which prevents dents and scraps as well as reduces the appearance of scratches.

It also utilized heavy-duty steel to construct triple beams for added support. Avions generally lie in between the 20’ range but 31 ½’ trailers.

For a premium towing experience, the revolutionary MOR/Ryde suspension system was included and became standard equipment for travel trailers. It’s frame members are 6 inches deep and are constructed from Urethane foam called Thermo-X by the company for added insulation and rigidity. Plexiglas acrylic windows were used by the company up until 1972 as well.

While the Avion has a better build quality in its preserved state and is less expensive, its maintenance and repairs can pose challenges for beginners or casual RV users. The trailers in circulation are not currently manufactured and their parts are not readily available.

Many Avion owners have to conduct significant inspections and renovations which raises its overall price significantly. Those who have owned RVs and are capable of its upkeep will find the Avion to be a traveling home that lasts and feels traditionally luxurious.

Airstream would be a preference by the virtue of its maintenance and customer service. You’re covered under a warranty and will be able to buy parts and replacements, if necessary.

The trade-off between build quality is only comparative and the RV itself has earned its reputation has a great option as a towable home for a reason. You can customize the vehicle according to your need, preference, and style.

This history of Avion begins not with its founder Loren Cayo but with his father Julius N . Cayo. Julius was the founder of Cayo Manufacturing Company. He trained his sons in the tool and die designing industry. As a result, the sons became skilled craftsmen so that each son successfully engaged in businesses for themselves. Howard M. Cayo was president of the K-O Products company, Loren Cayo was president of Star Stamping Company. This company was engaged in the manufacture of oil filters and components. Robert Cayo was owner of Robert R. Cayo Company, a manufacturer of televisions mast components and stampings. Loren was an avid sportsman and camper as were his friends Allen Grams and Larry Zuhl. They wanted a recreational vehicle that could be used with full hookups, or be self-contained when hookups were not available. Allen and Larry were building contractors. These backgrounds were a good blend and in 1955 the Avion Coach Corporation was formed in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The goal was to build America’s finest travel trailer. Allen Grams served as President of the Corporation for the first several years. The company prospered and by 1967 was operating plants in Benton Township Michigan and San Jacinto California. Loren passed away suddenly from a heart attack at age 51. Following Loren’s death Robert became President of Avion Coach.

In 1970, controlling interest in the Avion Coach Corporation was sold by the Cayo family to a Detroit family headed by Robert M. Ligon. Ligon Enterprises, who continued to build and market the same high quality product with Robert Ligon as its president. In 1976 Ligon Enterprises sold the company to Fleetwood Enterprises. The Silver Avion was built until the 1990’s when Fleetwood decided to build the Avion Product with more traditional RV construction methods. Fleetwood continues to sell 5th Wheel Trailers under the Avion Name.

For many years Avion’s were built at a plant located at 1300 East Empire. Later the plant was located just down the street at East 1550 Empire Avenue. During a business trip in 2003 Paul the Avion Guy took a trip over to East Empire Avenue to see if the old buildings were still there. The first thing I noticed was that the old campground at the intersection of M139 and East Empire. Many of us parked for the night when visiting the plant. I was surprised to see that both buildings are in use. 1300 is now the distribution center for Tile Mart and looks much like it did in the 1960’s. 1550 East Empire is now the Benton Harbor plant of the J. L. French Company. The property is virtually unchanged from my last visit in 1987. The only thing missing is the front lot full of new Silver Avions waiting to be shipped to a happy owner. The only sad part of the journey was when I came across the building of Star Stamping which is located on M139. The building is abandoned and for sale. Apparently Star was the only company to ever operate there and the company name is still on the front of the building.

AN EDITORIAL

In the early 1950s, Robert Cayo and his family hooked their nineteen foot Little Gem travel trailer to a 1951 Chevrolet and headed west for a family camping vacation. At the same time, Robert’s older brother Loren and his family headed west in their Packard automobile with an Airstream in tow. The two families set up camp at Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone National Park. As they sat around the campfire, the two brothers talked about how their trailers could be improved. Both admired the aircraft-type construction of the Airstream. But they agreed that they could manufacture a better trailer. Both Loren and Robert had experience in metal fabrication, product design, and the manufacturing process. Upon return to their homes in Michigan, Loren secured the agreement of two other partners and in 1955 Romany Coach, Inc. was founded. Apparently Robert didn’t have sufficient capital at this time to be one of the major partners. Loren’s other two partners were in the construction business. Two events significantly affected this new company from the very beginning.

First, the name “Romany” was chosen because it reflected the carefree lifestyle of the Romany Gypsies. The following quote is taken from a 1955 brochure: “. . .the Romany caravans are horse drawn vehicles which serve them in much the same manner in which a modern house trailer serves us today. It is from this, the earliest of mobile homes, that we have taken the name of our modern travel trailer. We feel that there is a little of the Romany in all of us and we have an inherent desire to be ‘free as the birds’. To travel and relax, to laugh and sing, to hunt and fish, to travel to new and far off places, to see what is over the next hill. “

Both Loren and Robert were avid outdoorsmen – they enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Selecting the Romany name seemed fitting; however, the Romany gypsies in the Michigan area protested the use of their name on a modern travel trailer. So the name was changed to “Avion” and the few trailers that were made with the Romany nameplate were called back to have the name changed to Avion. A rumor arose (of unknown origin) that the name was changed because Airstream had a model called the Romany and threatened a lawsuit. In an interview with Bill Cayo (Robert’s son who was old enough during the Yellowstone National Park camping trip to remember the early discussions and subsequent company issues) stated that Airstream did bring lawsuit(s) against Avion, but never challenged the use of the name “Romany”. These lawsuits contended that the Avion design was copied from the Airstream, but none were upheld in court. There were significant differences between the two trailers and also, there were a number of travel trailers that utilized riveted aircraft-construction, i.e., Spartan, Silver Streak, and others. In 1956, the second event was a disagreement between the original three partners. It was decided that one of the partners, Larry Zuhl, would sell his shares to Robert Cayo. This resulted in the two Cayo brothers, Loren and Robert, holding major positions in the company.

Oral history has the inherent characteristic of ideographic perception that produces factual distortion every time the story is repeated and these distortions are apparent in the Avion story. Examples are: Romany name (sometimes erroneously spelled Romney), reason for changing the name (someone probably guessed that there was a threatened lawsuit), and the spelling of Robert Ligon’s last name (spelled Legan). The story in this last example: Robert Ligon and Associates acquired majority interest in the Avion Coach, Inc. in 1970. Somehow, it has been written in various publications and on internet web-sites as “Legan Enterprises”. I can find no evidence that this name was ever used by Robert Ligon in his business affairs.

I have been researching Avion history and involvement of the Cayos in preparation for a book that will be entitled “Silver Avions and Cayos – A Tribute to one of the Best Travel Trailers ever produced and an Extraordinary Family that Made it Happen”. The information included in this editorial is being released now inasmuch as I believe it is needed to help us in the effort to be accurate about Avion history.

Robert Cayo became president of Avion Coach following the death of its founder brother Loren. The Cayo interests in Avion were sold to a Detroit family headed by Robert M. Ligon in April 1970. In July of 1970 Robert Cayo purchased the Pickup Camper Division of Avion and began operations as the Cayo RV Corporation. Robert Cayo who had been the president of Avion until its sale now became the president of Cayo RV Corporation. The company built the same high quality pickup camper as was manufactured by Avion. The plant operations were at 1550 East Empire Avenue just down the street from Avion which was at 1300 East Empire. Robert’s sons Bill and Dennis played important roles in the company. Dennis was the Office Manager and Bill became the production manager. It was Bill that built the first Avion camper for his own use with basic components of the Avion Coach. In 1965, the Pickup Truck Camper went into production at Avion.

Manufacturer Information

The Avion Travel Trailer was first built in 1956. Classic Aluminum trailers were built through the 1990 model year.

A 1957 Brochure features 3 different models; a 20′ Rambler, a 23′ Rover. and a 26′ Regal. IN either model you had a choice of dinette (converts to double bed) or sofa (converts to double bed), table and 2 chairs.

The 20′ Rambler had either rear twins or a rear crossways double. There was not room for a shower in this model, but a marine stool was located under a foldaway lavatory.

The body of the AVION Travel Trailer is two complete Aluminum shells one inside the other, separated by a blanket of 1 1/4“ plastic treated fibreglas insulation, riveted together as one unit on aluminum stretch formed bows and stringers. The only wood used in the construction of the AVION is the plywood floor and cabinets.

“The western shoreline of Michigan has long been considered prime real estate for boat repair businesses but if you look inland a few miles east of Benton Harbor, you’ll find a seven-bay service facility that, while focusing on recreation vehicles, rarely entertains anything without wheels. Fiberglass guests are just as infrequent at Cayo Repair Service, where the specialty of the house is riveted aluminum renovation.

Granted, Cayo isn’t alone in practicing what’s fast becoming a lost art among motorhome collision-repair facilities. The difference is a matter of pedigree; on a good day, the marquees sequestered on the grounds will include one sharing heritage with the shop itself.

The Cayo Motovator is tangible proof that imitation truly is the sincerest form of flattery. This precursor to a contemporary Class C coach has its roots in a metal-stamping business – and a travel trailer. Any discussion of the Motovator, however, must by nature include a brief history of the Avion Coach Corporation.

“My father, Robert, and my uncle, Loren, were both outdoorsmen,” recalled Bill Cayo. “In the mid-’50s, Loren bought an Airstream trailer, during a camping trip to Yellowstone National Park, they reflected on how great it was and decided to build one like it.”

Drawing on metalworking backgrounds forged at the metal-stamping business owned by their father, the Cayos and a third partner, building contractor Alan Grams, introduced their first trailer in 1955.

“The first few vehicles were actually built under the Romney Coach badge,” Bill noted, “but apparently there were some problems with the name, so in 1957 the company name was changed to Avion Coach Corporation.”

Travel trailers weren’t the only vehicles manufactured by Avion. Using the same basic parts that went into the Avion trailer, Bill cobbled together a pickup camper for his own use and the company liked the result. In 1965, Avion started offering pickup truck campers, as well. That division would figure prominently when, several years after Loren’s untimely passing in 1967, Avion was sold.

“The company (Legan Enterprises) really didn’t want to manufacture pickup campers,” Bill said, “so part of the purchase agreement was that they would sell the camper division back to my father, my brother and myself.” In 1970, the Cayos affixed their own name to the familiar streamlined camper shell. A year later, they extended the length of the camper, slipped a cutoff chassis beneath it and christened the self-propelled coach the Cayo Motovator.

Available in 20- and 22-toot models, the Motovator featured an anodized aluminum shell (sporting a 13-panel rear cap design so familiar to owners of mid-’50s Airstream trailers) and metal framing which allowed the mini-motorhome to maintain its structural integrity, In fact, the Cayo RV Corporation offered the coaches with a lifetime warranty to the original owner, “When we designed it, we realized that the body of the coach would last longer than the chassis,” Bill pointed out, “so it was actually designed to be removed and placed on a newer chassis, should the need arise”.

Originally available on a Dodge one-ton chassis with a choice of a 360 cid or 318 cid Dodge, 350 CID Chevy or 302 CiD Ford V-8 engine, the Cayo carried a dry weight of 8,245 pounds (20-foot model). The spacious interior (6 feet, 8 inches, floor to ceiling and 7 feet, 7 inches wall-to-wall) was fitted with most conveniences then available, including maple hardwoods, a dual-battery charging system with 30-amp converter, 22,000 BTU forced-air gas heating system and sizable 5 cubic-foot refrigerator. Options included an auxiliary gas tank, 2.5Kw AC generator, roof rack and ladder, Therma San waste incinerator, water purifier and 10,000 BTU roof-mounted air conditioner (which raised the height to nearly 10 feet). The 52-inch cabover configuration offered sleeping arrangements for four.

While the Motovator proved popular and its size and reliance on small-block V-8 engines allowed for relatively respectable mileage – the Cayo earned 10-12 MPG in an era where big block-powered Class A coaches were getting just half that – sales dropped off following the gas crunch of 1973-74. Although the OPEC oil embargo lasted just six months, the Cayo Motovator never really rebounded; in 1974, Cayo RV Corporation closed its Benton Harbor, Michigan, factory after approximately 600 Motovators passed through the facility.

The small number of coaches produced essentially precludes the possibility of a Cayo-only national club, but Cayo owners are welcomed at the Avion Travelcade Club (avionclub.org). In 1977, Bill funneled his experience into Cayo Repair Service, which he operates today with his son, Chuck. You could say that they know this coach from the inside, out – it’s in their blood.”

Avion’s aluminum interior walls were Zolatone painted thru the 1967 year. Beginning in 1968, Avion used vinyl coated aluminum and used this til the end of production of the aluminum riveted trailers.

Unique features/Options

The Avion was built using outer aluminum skins that could be polished to a mirror finish until late production of the 1962 units. The 1963 units began with a satin finished Anodized Aluminum finish that was actually “harder” aluminum and more resistant to dents and scratches. Avion adopted the revolutionary MOR/ryde (smooth glide) suspension system back in 1967. Engineering tests proved it to be so good, that it soon became standard equipment. Avion, along with the supplier, MOR/ryde pioneered and perfected this suspension system on travel trailers. Avion trailers use a strong triple beam of heavy duty steel, including a rugged center beam for added support. Frame members are 5” deep (6“ deep on 31 ft.) Urethane foam, called THERMO-X by Avion was first introduced as the total insulation for the entire coach in 1966. THERMO-X also adds to wall rigidity. 1968-1972 Avion used tinted *Plexiglas* acrylic windows with black anodized aluminum frames. Beginning in 1972, Avion was among the first to make dual waste water tanks, standard equipment. 1980 Avion suspensions were called Adjust-A-Ride. It was an innovative independent suspension of half-axles with a center pivot point. The axles were upgraded to heavier material beginning with the 1985 year models. In 1989 and 1990 Avion used axles by Alko-Kober and this was a torsion type axle suspension.

In 1989 Avion began using a coating created by a 5-step electrolytic process, and continued with this coating until production ceased after 1990. Many people wrongly believe these last Avions were “painted”, but the coating is not paint, and has proved to stand up very well over time. It’s also easier to cover scratches by using touch-up paint that matches the coating. An important feature of Avion quality was its use of all hardwood interiors with dovetail and tongue-and-groove drawer and cabinet construction. The overall quality of Avions was unsurpassed, and still is not met by any other trailer manufacturer.

Both admired the aircraft-type construction of the Airstream.  But they agreed that they could manufacture a better trailer.  Both Loren and Robert had experience  in metal fabrication, product design, and the manufacturing process.  Upon return to their home in Michigan, Loren secured the agreement of two other partners and in 1955 the Romany Coach, Inc. was founded.  Apparently Robert didn't have sufficient capital at this time to be one of the major partners.  Loren's other two partners were in the construction business.  Two events significantly affected this new company from the very beginning.

First, the name "Romany" was chosen because it reflected the carefree lifestyle of the Romany Gypsies. The following quote is taken from a 1955 brochure: "...the Romany caravans are horse drawn vehicles which serve them in much the same manner in which a  a modern house trailer serves us today.  It is from this, the earliest of mobile home, that we have take the name of our modern travel trailer. We feel there is a little of the Romany in all of us and we have an inherent desire to be 'free as the birds'.  To travel and relax, to laugh and sing, to hunt and fish, to travel to new and far off places, to see what is over the next hill."

Both Loren and Robert were avid outdoors men.  They enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling.  Selecting the Romany name seemed fitting:  however, the Romany Gypsies in the Michigan are protested in the use of their name on a modern travel trailer.  So the name was changed to "Avion" and the few trailers with the Romany nameplate were called back to have the name changed to Avion.  A rumor arose (of unknown origin) that the name was changed because Airstream had a model called the Romany and threatened a lawsuit.  In an interview with Bill Cayo (Robert's son who was old enough during the Yellowstone National Park camping trip to remember the early discussions and subsequent company issues) stated that Airstream did bring lawsuit (s) against Avion but never challenged the use of the name "Romany".  These lawsuits contended that the Avion design was copied for the Airstream but none were upheld in court.  There were significant differences between the two trailers and also there were a number of travel trailers that utilized riveted  aircraft construction, i.e., Spartan, Silver Stream and others.

In 1956, the second event was a disagreement between the original partners.  Larry Zuhl would sell his sharees to Robert Cayo.  This resulted in the two Cayo brothers, Loren and Robert, hold major positions in the company. Oral history has the inherent characteristics of idiographic perception that produces factual distortion everytime the story is repeated and these distortions  are apparent in the Avion story.  Examples are: Romney name (sometimes erroneously spelled Romnaey).  The story in the last example:  Robert Ligon and Associates acquired the majority interest in the Avion Coach, Inc.. in 1970.  Somehow it has been written in various publications and on internet web-sites ad "Legan Enterprises".  I can find no evidence that this name was ever used by Robert Ligon in his business affairs.

I have been researching Avion history and involvement of the Cayos in preparation for a book that will be entitled "Silver Avions and Cayos.   (note: This book has since been released.) -- A tribute to one of the Best Travel Trailers ever produced and an Extraordinary Family that Made it Happen". The information included in this editorial is being released now in as much as I believe it is needed to help us in the effort to be accurate about Avion history.

In the early 1950's, Robert Cayo and his family hooked their 19 foot Little Gem Travel Trailer to a 1951 Chevrolet and headed west for a family vacation.  At the same time, Robert's older brother Loren and his family headed west in the Packard automobile with an Airstream in tow.  The two families set up camp at Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone National Park.  As they sat around the campfire, the two brothers talked about how their trailer could be improved.

Avion Travel Trailer: An Iconic Piece of American History

Avion Travel Trailers have been an iconic piece of American history since their introduction in the 1950s. The name has become synonymous with quality, durability, and adventure, providing the perfect vehicle for a family vacation.

Avion travel trailers were known for their unique construction materials and techniques, which allowed them to be incredibly lightweight but still incredibly strong. The trailers were made with aluminum siding and corrugated steel framing, which gave them a unique look that was both stylish and functional.

Despite this setback, many enthusiasts still remember Avion fondly as an iconic brand that helped define an era in RVing history. Their legacy lives on through vintage models that can still be found on used markets around the country today—a testament to the quality craftsmanship they offered so many years ago.

Both Avion and Airstream are legendary names in the recreational vehicle industry known for their premium build quality and luxurious materials. They both produce Recreational Vehicles that can range from 30 to 45 feet in length and that can cost anywhere from $100,000 to $300,000 depending on the model.

Both Avion and Airstream RVs are designed with a blend of classic styling and modern convenience which have made them some of the most desirable units on the market today. However, they do have some differences which potential buyers should be aware of before committing to a purchase.

Bottom Line Up Front

If you are on a tight budget, have kids who are too tall for the upper bunk bed, or care more about interior space than exterior styling then go with an Avion. Airstreams usually have only one bathroom whereas most Avions have two bathrooms.

However, if you’re looking for something with exceptional attention to detail and a long-lasting frame, choose an Airstream, because it will likely last for 50 years or more.

Main Differences Between Avion vs Airstream

The Main Differences Between Avion And Airstream Are:

• Airstream charges consistently more for their trailers across all sizes, whereas Avion charges more for larger trailers.
• Airstream uses aluminum alloy on the exterior of their units, which is lightweight and corrosion-resistant but also very soft and susceptible to dents; whereas Avion uses powder-coated steel throughout their units, which is much stronger than aluminum alloy but also heavier and may require painting over time.
• Airstream interiors are more modern and stylish, whereas Avion interiors are a bit more old-fashioned.
• Airstream exteriors have much sharper lines and shapes, whereas Avion exteriors have a more rounded and aerodynamic appearance.
• Airstream RVs are built on a cut-steel frame, whereas Avion RVs are built on a welded steel chassis.
• Airstream units feature high-end luxury amenities such as hydraulic leveling systems and tanks that heat the water; whereas Avion units often come with basic accessories that are then upgraded upon special order.

Avion Overview

Avion is a traditional company that has been making RVs for over 60 years. Avion prides itself on the overall quality of its units, which are made with durable steel and feature luxurious interiors with elegant wood veneers for an overall classic appearance.

Avion models

Avion models range from 24 to 39 feet in length and start at $100,000. Some of their most popular models include the Grand Tour, the Signature Series, and the Diva.

The Grand Tour is a 29-foot fifth wheel that features an outdoor kitchen with a fridge, sink, and grill; two opposing swivel chairs on the exterior of the unit; hardwood cabinet doors with stainless steel hardware throughout the interior of the unit; and extensive counter space with plenty of storage space.

The Grand Tour has three slide-outs that provide 320 square feet of interior floor space and comes with a gas furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, two LCD TVs, electric fireplace, washer/dryer unit, exterior shower station, outside stereo speakers, and full body paint on the exterior.

Signature Series

The Signature Series is a 35-foot fifth wheel with multiple floorplans to choose from.

It has an outdoor kitchen with a fridge, bar sink, and grill; one or two opposing swivel chairs on the exterior of the unit; hardwood cabinet doors with stainless steel hardware throughout the interior of the unit; and large picture windows with an expansive view of the surrounding area.

It has two to three slide-outs and comes equipped with a central vacuum system, outdoor shower station, exterior speakers for an MP3 player, gas furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, TV/DVD combo in the bedroom and living room; deluxe fixtures throughout; and full body paint on the exterior.

The Diva is a 39-foot fifth wheel with multiple floorplans to choose from. Some of its most popular features include an outdoor kitchen with a fridge, sink, and grill; side sofa sleeper in the living room; hardwood cabinet doors throughout the interior of the unit; elegant wood veneer paneling on the exterior of the unit; and large picture windows with an expansive view of the surrounding area.

It has two or three slide-outs and comes equipped with a washer/dryer combo, central vacuum system, outdoor shower station, exterior speakers for an MP3 player, gas furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, TV/DVD combo in the bedroom and living room; deluxe fixtures throughout; and full body paint on the exterior.

Avion design

There are several distinctive design features that can help you identify an Avion travel trailer. First, Avion travel trailers are made with aluminum exterior siding. Second, the nose of the unit features a streamlined shape similar to an airplane or rocket ship.

The inside of their RVs are no less luxurious than the outside, featuring elegant wood veneer paneling on all cabinets and storage areas, built-in microwaves in some models, and full paint on the exterior.

Avion structure

Avion travel trailers are made with the same high-quality materials that you would expect from an Airstream or Winnebago, but are available at a more affordable price point.

Avion uses high-grade steel and features very little plastic on their units; whereas other luxury brands such as Winnebago often use aluminum exteriors and lots of plastic to cut costs.

Avion units are made with the same durable components as other high-end brands; however, Avion travel trailers do not have a custom luxury exterior shell like Airstreams and Winnebagos. For this reason, they can’t be customized like Airstream or Winnebago brand trailer units.

Avion amenities

Avion RVs are available with a variety of additional amenities, including an outdoor kitchen that features a gas grill, refrigerator, and sink; swivel counter stools; hardwood cabinets throughout the interior of the unit; deluxe fixtures throughout; three TVs (living room, bedroom, and exterior) with DVD/CD player combos; spacious master bedroom with a king or queen-size bed; a central vacuum system; a washer/dryer combo; exterior speakers for an MP3 player; outdoor shower station; and full body paint on the exterior.

Avion pros:

• The Grand Tour and Signature Series come with a full body paint job on the exterior of the unit, giving the appearance of a more polished and luxurious RV.
• Some models include an outdoor kitchen with an island countertop, sink, and grill; hardwood cabinet doors throughout the interior of the unit; and deluxe fixtures throughout.
• Some models offer a washer/dryer combo and central vacuum system; exterior speakers for an MP3 player; and full body paint on the exterior.

Avion cons:

• The Grand Tour, Signature Series, and Diva are among Avion’s more expensive models.
• Although the amenities offered by Avion RVs are guaranteed to provide comfort and luxury, some people may wish to customize the interior of their unit.

Airstream Overview

Founded in 1929, Airstream is known as an American icon that has been around since the heyday of car camping. Airstream trailers are recognized by their sleek aerodynamic shape and aluminum exterior.

Due to their top-of-the-line build quality and reliability, Airstream RVs are popular with long-term travelers who spend extended periods of time on the road.

Airstream models

Airstream offers plenty of different models, ranging in length from 18 feet to 28 feet. Airstreams are available in multiple floorplans, with many featuring contemporary designs that give them a van-like appearance.

Airstream Hyperlite

The Airstream Hyperlight is a 19-foot travel trailer with multiple floorplans to choose from.

It has an exterior kitchenette with a fridge, sink, and grill; dinette booth with removable table; bar area in the living room; full body paint on the exterior of the unit; hardwood cabinet doors throughout the interior of the unit; and a variety of appliances including a small stove, microwave oven, TV/DVD combo in the bedroom, French door refrigerator with ice maker, washer/dryer combo, water heater, air conditioner, heat pump, central vacuum system.

The Airstream Estate Brown Classic has a master bedroom with queen-size bed, swivel counter stools, central vacuum system, full-body paint on the exterior of the unit, hardwood cabinet doors throughout the interior of the unit, and full appliance package including TV/DVD combo in living room.

Airstream design

The iconic design of Airstream RVs is instantly recognizable. Airstream trailers are known for their sleek aluminum exteriors, streamlined shape, and multiple windows on the sides of the unit.

Airstream structure

Airstream trailers are handmade in Jackson Center, Ohio. It features a central vacuum system and full-body paint on the exterior of the unit.

Unlike other RVs, Airstreams have a polished aluminum exterior that is both sleek and durable. This luxurious look can’t be matched by many other brands, making them popular with those who desire an aesthetically pleasing mobile home.

They feature a 5-inch frame that doesn’t flex or bend, a feature that helps them maintain structural stability and prevents sagging over time.

Their interiors are made of high-quality Birchwood veneers and real hardwood doors. They also have FSC certified wood flooring throughout the unit.

Snow loads up to 70 pounds per square foot can be supported by the Airstream’s 5-inch frame.

Airstream rooftop units come in many shapes and sizes, including penthouse models that feature retractable roofs to capture more headroom inside the RV.

Vintage RV: There was some gypsy in the Avion trailer heritage

The avion travel trailer was first built in 1956..

Not long ago, I came across an aging Avion trailer, which had an uncanny resemblance to the older Airstream which sat next to it. 

It is hard not to see that the all-aluminum Avion trailers were knock-offs of the famous Airstream trailers but don't tell that to Avion founders Howard, Loren and Robert Cayo. 

In fact, Airstream was so convinced that Avion had plagiarized their design that they took the Cayo's to court. Airstream subsequently lost the suit based on the fact that there were a number of trailer companies producing all-aluminum units - many inspired as spin-offs from California's waning aircraft industry in the 1950's. "These lawsuits contended that the Avion design was copied from Airstream, but none were upheld in court. There were significant differences between the two trailers and also, there were a number of travel trailers that utilized riveted aircraft construction, i.e., Spartan, Silver Streak and others," noted one blog post. 

Originally called Romney trailers, evidently after the Romney gypsies of Europe, the Avion Coach Corporation was born in the mid-to-late 1950's. 

"The first few vehicles were actually built under the Romney Coach badge," Bill Cayo, son of one of the owners noted in an interview, "but apparently there were some problems with the name, so in 1957 the company name was changed to Avion Coach Corporation."

Travel trailers weren't the only vehicles manufactured by Avion. Using the same basic parts that went into the Avion trailer, Bill Cayo cobbled together a pickup camper for his own use and the company liked the result. In 1965, Avion started offering pickup truck campers as well. That division would figure prominently when, several years after Loren's untimely passing in 1967, Avion was sold. 

In 1970, controlling interest in the Avion Coach Corporation was sold by the Cayo family to a Detroit family headed by Robert M. Ligon. Ligon Enterprises, who continued to build and market the same high quality product with Robert Ligon as its president. In 1976, Ligon Enterprises sold the company to Fleetwood Enterprises. The Silver Avion was built until the 1990's when Fleetwood decided to build the Avion Product with more traditional RV construction methods. Fleetwood continues to sell 5th Wheel trailers under the Avion name. 

The Avion Travel Trailer was first built in 1956. Classic aluminum trailers were built through the 1990 model year. . . and there was always a little bit of 'roaming' gypsy in the Avion trailer heritage.

Avion and Airstream are two names you may have come across if you’re part of the RV community. Although Avion has been out of business since 2002 , their travel trailers are still out there, keeping most who own them happy campers! 

All boils down to a simple question: is Avion better than Airstream or vice versa? RVs are expensive, and it would be a bummer if you choose the wrong one.

In this article, I will discuss everything from features that the companies offer to their RVs’ resale value .  

Let’s get started.

Avion vs. Airstream History

Avion vs. Airstream is not a new debate. Let’s dive into their history to have a better understanding.  

Airstream is the older company of the two. It was founded in the 1930s and has introduced several RV models to provide maximum comfort. They’re made from top-quality aluminum; they have only improved over the decades.  

The first Avion RV was produced in 1955 and became a hit among campers. Made from high-quality, sturdy material, Avion claimed that their RVs would last generations.

The company steadily grew and opened production units in different parts of the US.  

These two companies have been in the game for decades. They have garnered long-time enthusiasts who uploaded information online, including maintenance tips, vintage brochures, manuals, guides, photos, and more.

All About Avion RVs

So, let’s go a bit deeper now. I have individually talked about both RVs to give you a better picture.

Here are some essential features of an Avion RV, including pros and cons. 

• They provide an anodized aluminum finish
• The furnishing is made from hardwood, which offers a sleek and comfy build
• The dual furnace keeps your RV thoroughly heated
• Some Avion RVs offer external or overhead storage compartments
• MOR/Ryde suspension system
• 6″ deep Thermo X-frame
• The quality of the build is remarkable. This is why their RVs are still in demand. The build is strong, rigid, and designed to keep you warm even in the coldest days.
• The shock absorbers make sure your ride remains smooth. The MOR-Ryde suspension does an excellent job of keeping air pressure, springs, and tire systems in check.
• You will like the interior and hardwood furnishing. It’s sleek and offers tons of space to move around.
• Not readily available in the market. 
• Since you can purchase only used Avion RV, renovations might be necessary.

Let’s take a look at how Airstream is different from Avion. 

• They come with an aluminum finish
• Modern furnishing, design, and layout
• Hydronic heating for insulation
• Overhead, external, and under-the-bed compartments for excess storage of must-have gadgets
• Torsion axle suspension 
• Made from the most durable materials like high-grade aluminum.
• Modern Airstream trailers have a lighter build while offering an A-class experience. 
• They are also aero-dynamic, thus showing cost-effectiveness in terms of fuel consumption.
• They are expensive, so a dent in your wallet might be inevitable.
• You may not be satisfied with the insulation. Vintage Airstream RVs are better suited for summers.

The recent Airstream trailers are equipped with modern interiors and several tech features. 

Some Major Differences Between Avion and Airstream

Even though Avion and Airstream are top-notch, you need to choose the one that suits your preference. Please take a look at their differences below.

Availability

Avion RV parts are not readily available in the market. The company ceased production of trailers in the 1990s. So you probably can’t expect a brand new purchase of any part.

However, you can buy some parts second-hand from donor coaches. Some sellers may take advantage of this situation and jack up prices, so you must look for authentic dealers.

There are some hardware stores where you can order custom-made RV parts. But remember that this option will cost you a lot of money.

If you plan on purchasing an Avion, look at the stores near you and gather information regarding the parts.  

Airstream is still in production. The company is steadily producing new trailers, offering modern designs. So, getting a hold of specific parts is not difficult, and many dealers will provide you with several options. 

Moreover, you can upgrade your RV as gadget stores offer tons of hardware. You will easily find slide-out stabilizer jacks, digital tank monitors, lightweight aluminum bumpers, and more.

Modern RVs 

Avion has produced incredible quality RVs that are meant to last a lifetime. However, they seem a bit old-fashioned in front of Airstream because the company has stopped manufacturing trailers, so it’s not keeping up with the trends. 

This can be a problem if you are looking for modern RVs.  

On the other hand, Airstream has kept up with time, leading the company to produce modern RVs for the present-day traveler.

For instance, Basecamp X is a recently announced Airstream RV that equips several modern features. It also offers an app that you can download on your phone.

Using it, you can control several functions such as lights, AC and heat pumps, awning, and more.

One thing you should note is that Basecamp X is smaller. If compact trailers for one or two persons are your thing, you should consider buying them.

It’s alright if you’re old school or don’t care about modern gadgets. Avion RVs’ massive and robust build might sway you in its favor.  

Due to their interior, Airstream trailers generally weigh less than its similar-sized Avion RVs. Avion’s interior has been crafted from only wood, while Airstream hosts materials such as plastic and aluminum. 

Although Avion’s fit and finish are admired by many, its heavier build might strain on towing.

Durability 

Both Airstream and Avion are the oldest running RV manufacturers in the market. The companies have produced A-list quality trailers.

Their vintage RVs are so well built that they still stand upright and compete against new ones.  

But regarding durability, I’d say Avion wins this round by a slight margin. Many RV users also agree with this opinion, considering Avions are known for lasting longer.  

Airstream’s exterior is made from lightweight aluminum, slightly less durable and more likely to wear out. 

Coming to Avion RVs are made from steel or anodized aluminum, which is rigid and protects against natural elements. Both materials are less likely to scrap and prevent dents as well.

Storage Space  

Since Avion RVs have a square design, they offer more storage space. It provides a little bit more space to store your goods. 

However, the difference in storage space is not immense, and Avion wins only by a slight margin compared to Airstream.

Some users say that Airstream’s rounded design is why storage space is affected.

When discussing price, you must understand that Avion and Airstream are expensive.  

As Avion RVs are no longer in production, you can purchase only used or vintage ones at a cheaper price. But this is not always the case.  

Avions are in demand, and since they’re limited, the sellers might ask you for a heftier price. This also depends on the model you’re going for.

Airstream RVs are expensive, especially if you go for a newer, first-hand model. They offer better equipment and have kept up with the time, so the hike in price makes sense.  

Remember, your budget and personal preference must be the sole reason for your purchase. Even with a limited budget, you can find your dream RV if you research thoroughly.

Just make sure to visit local dealers and take a look at the product in person.

Resale Value  

Let’s talk a bit about resale value.  

You might want to sell your RV in the future, so thinking long-term while purchasing it won’t harm you.  

Whether you go for Avion or Airstream, the resale value will automatically increase if the RV is in good condition .

But what if your RV is old and rugged? You can renovate it to increase the merit. Initially, you will need to spend some money, though.

Generally, the resale value for a modern Airstream is more. However, Avion is still quite popular in the market. They are classic, and a lot of people prefer buying their RVs.
