Dick Rutan, whose round-the-world flight made history, dies at 85

He and co-pilot Jeana Yeager flew around the globe without stopping or refueling, spending nine days inside a cramped, noisy cabin and an even smaller cockpit.

atlantic city round trip bus

For nine days in December 1986, Dick Rutan and co-pilot Jeana Yeager lived out of a cabin the size of a phone booth, flying an experimental plane nonstop around the world.

Their aircraft, the Voyager, was so heavy with fuel that when it took off from Edwards Air Force Base in California the wing tips dragged along the runway. When it returned, it was so light it hardly kicked up any dust.

Together, Mr. Rutan and Yeager became the first pilots to circumnavigate the globe without stopping or refueling. “This was the last ‘first’ — the last major event in atmospheric flying,” Mr. Rutan told reporters after climbing out of the plane, exhausted, to cheers from more than 20,000 spectators. “As soon as people stop breaking records,” he added, “that’s a world I don’t care to live in.”

Mr. Rutan, who later tested rocket-powered aircraft and attempted to become the first person to fly nonstop around the world in a balloon, was 85 when he died May 3 at a hospital in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The cause was pulmonary fibrosis, which he developed as a complication of long covid, according to his friend Bill Whittle, a family representative.

Long before he took the controls of the Voyager, Mr. Rutan was known for his “velvet arm,” the smooth flying style he demonstrated in high-performance aircraft. He flew 325 combat missions over Vietnam as an Air Force pilot, strafing antiaircraft positions in a North American F-100 Super Sabre, and later worked as a test pilot for an aerospace company founded by his younger brother, Burt Rutan, who came up with the initial idea for the Voyager over lunch in 1981, sketching a design on a napkin.

Mr. Rutan said he figured it would take about 18 months and $250,000 to refine the concept and build the plane. Instead, it took five years and nearly $2 million, by his estimate, as he and his brother struggled to secure financial backing and to fine-tune an unorthodox aircraft that loosely resembled the letter E.

The shape was almost comical, wrote New Yorker journalist Burton Bernstein — “like a Disney birdling that sprouted adult wings prematurely.” Yet it was also extraordinarily effective. Constructed from an ultralightweight sandwich of paper honeycomb and graphite fiber, the plane effectively functioned as a flying fuel tank, carrying more than 7,000 pounds of fuel — more than three times the weight of the aircraft — balanced between two torpedo-like structures and a smaller fuselage in the middle, occupied by Mr. Rutan and Yeager.

The pilots took turns flying the plane and resting in a narrow, noisy 2-by-7 ½-foot cabin adjoining the even smaller cockpit. As in the Spirit of St. Louis, the single-engine plane that Charles Lindbergh used to make the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic, the pilot had no forward view and instead faced an instrument bank. At night, the crew relied on moonlight that streamed in through side windows and a cockpit viewing bubble. In lieu of toilets, they used plastic bags.

While Mr. Rutan was supremely confident, boasting to journalists that the trip would be a “piece of cake,” the flight got off to a rough start. The plane’s winglets, which were designed to prevent fuel from draining onto the ground, dragged on the runway during takeoff and were soon dislodged; one landed on a yard about five miles from the base.

The Voyager appeared to be on a collision course for Typhoon Marge near the Philippines, although Mr. Rutan and Yeager were able to skirt the storm and use the winds to their advantage, picking up speed over Southeast Asia and crossing the Indian Ocean into Africa. They rose from 8,000 feet to as high as 20,500 feet while soaring over thunderstorms near Lake Victoria. Less than eight hours from home, their rear engine went out for a few minutes, causing the plane to lose several thousand feet in altitude before the pilots were able to restart the front engine.

“I’ve got tooth marks on my heart,” a crew member radioed from the ground .

The flight was further complicated by the tumultuous romance between the two pilots, who lived with one another and were in a relationship, although they seldom discussed it with the media. Interviewed by the Los Angeles Times a year after they completed the flight, they said they had broken up under the strains of the Voyager project but tried to remain united for the sake of the mission.

“Most people break up and go their separate ways. We broke up and stayed together,” said Mr. Rutan, who added that Yeager — unrelated to test pilot Chuck Yeager — proved a soothing force in the aircraft, calming him down when his judgment became warped by fear or anxiety. “She’d settle me down,” he said, “and tell me just to fly the airplane.”

Mr. Rutan, his brother and Yeager were together awarded the Collier Trophy, considered the highest honor in American aviation. They also received the Presidential Citizens Medal, a top civilian honor, by President Ronald Reagan, who called the Voyager’s return home — a few minutes after 8 a.m. on Dec. 23 — “just about the best Christmas present America could have had.”

The oldest of three children, Richard Glenn Rutan was born in Loma Linda, Calif., on July 1, 1938. He grew up in Dinuba, in the San Joaquin Valley, where his father was a dentist and his mother was a homemaker.

“Whenever I saw an airplane as a kid, I wanted to get up there in it,” he recalled. “Those contrails of the big jets overwhelmed me. It was my destiny to fly.” He began taking flying lessons at 15, soloed on his 16th birthday and had a commercial pilot’s license and flight instructor’s rating by the time he graduated from high school.

Soon after, he joined the Air Force, starting out as a navigator before completing flight training as a pilot. Dispatched to Vietnam, he flew more than 100 missions as a member of an all-volunteer aircrew unit known by their radio call sign, Misty , that operated at low altitudes in North Vietnam, locating and marking targets for other aircraft.

Mr. Rutan was awarded the Silver Star for valor for directing an attack on antiaircraft sites in May 1968, cited for “his phenomenal aggressiveness, superb airmanship, and complete disregard for his personal safety in the face of intense ground fire.”

During a mission that September, he was struck by ground fire and had to bail out of his burning fighter plane over the South China Sea, where he was rescued by helicopter. The experience left him disillusioned after months in which he found himself addicted to the adrenaline of combat. It also led him to question the war’s rationale.

“Suddenly, I realized what a terrible thing it all was,” he told the New Yorker. “I guess I had been brainwashed, in a way. The stupidity of that war!”

Mr. Rutan remained in the Air Force for another decade but said he stopped volunteering for combat missions. He retired in 1978 with the rank of lieutenant colonel, with decorations that included five awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Purple Heart.

By then, he had obtained a college education through correspondence courses, earning a bachelor’s degree from American Technological University, now Texas A&M University at Central Texas located in Killeen. He became a test pilot for his brother’s aircraft company and met Yeager at an air show in 1980. He soon quit his brother’s company, although they reunited to work on the Voyager, even as they argued at times over aircraft design, fighting over the merits of equipment like a weather radar system, which added to the plane’s weight but could, Mr. Rutan said, prove crucial during the flight. (He won the argument, and the radar was installed.)

Mr. Rutan’s first marriage, to Geraldine Tompkins, ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, the former Kris Peets; two daughters from his earlier marriage, Holly Hogan and Jill Hoffman; two stepdaughters, Shannon Ford and Kelly Ross; his brother; a sister; and eight grandchildren.

After the success of the Voyager, Mr. Rutan hit the lecture circuit and ran for Congress in Southern California as a conservative Republican, losing to incumbent George Brown Jr., a Democrat. He later said he felt “totally aimless” before he returned to aviation.

Mr. Rutan obtained a balloon pilot’s license and joined fellow balloonist Dave Melton in attempting to circumnavigate the globe. They were forced to end their quest just a few hours after launch in 1998, when they parachuted into a cactus-filled field outside Albuquerque after part of their balloon ruptured. Mr. Rutan later flew experimental rocket-powered planes for the aerospace company XCOR, once delivering a few pouches of mail for a flight from Mojave to nearby California City.

“All I’ve ever wanted to do is fly, and there are only two types of flying worth a damn: test pilots and combat,” he told The Washington Post in 1985 . “The rest is repetitive and boring and should be left to bus drivers.”

Ukraine war latest: 'Astonishing' Putin reshuffle points to 'serious instability' in Russian leadership, ex-MI6 officer says

Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu is set to be replaced more than two years into the war, in a major shakeup of Vladimir Putin's cabinet.

  • Analysis:  Russia's attack in Kharkiv region not a complete surprise - but the force of it is

We're ending our live updates on the Ukraine war and Vladimir Putin's surprise reshuffle for this evening.

Scroll through the blog to read the latest updates from today.

As we've been reporting, Vladimir Putin has proposed a reshuffle which will see longstanding defence minister Sergei Shoigu replaced with civilian Andrei Belousov.

It's a name we haven't heard much through the war, but as defence minister he'll become a key figure.

So who is Andrei Belousov? Here's a quick explainer...

The 65-year-old graduated from the Faculty of Economics of the Moscow State University in 1981 with distinction.

He was appointed a non-staff adviser to the Russian prime minister in 2000 and joined the economy ministry in 2006. Between 2008 and 2012 he served as director of the economics and finance department under Vladimir Putin.

Mr Belousov was appointed economics minister in 2012, and then served as adviser to the Russian president from 2013 to 2020.

After this he was deputy prime minister - bar a brief period where he served as prime minister when Mikhail Mishustin contracted COVID in 2020.

Unlike previous defence ministers Mr Belousov does not have a military background. He's believed to be close to Mr Putin.

Sergei Shoigu being moved to Russia's Security Council signals that Vladimir Putin sees the institution as a political holding space, according to a Russian political analyst.

Tatiana Stanovaya, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, said in a piece online that the council was becoming a "reservoir for Putin's 'former' key figures - people who he can't let go, but doesn't have a place for".

In posts to X, Ms Stanovaya also said Andrei Belousov was a "logical choice" as Mr Putin looks to enhance arms production and meet military needs.

But she said despite the "surprising" reshuffles, which she claimed are not at an end, the Russian leadership's "overall policy and decision-making mechanisms will remain unchanged".

By Ivor Bennett , Moscow correspondent

This has come as a huge surprise. Not one, but two key figures in Russia's leadership structure sacked simultaneously.

It suggests there's a lot more going on inside the Kremlin than meets the eye.

Sergei Shoigu is a very close Putin ally and has been for years. So why replace him?

Clearly Putin is unhappy with the direction of the war. This coincides with Russia's attempt to open up a new front in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. New directions and new leadership - Putin's ringing the changes.

Shoigu's successor speaks volumes. Andrei Belousov is an economist. A technocrat. Not an obvious choice to run the military, but this underlines where Putin's concerns are right now ("how much longer can I afford the war?").

Russia's entire economy is geared towards the military right now. He wants to ensure it's operating as efficiently as possible, so his war can continue.

Shoigu moves to the Security Council, where he'll replace Nikolai Patrushev. Technically it's a more important role, but in reality it’s a demotion. More importantly, by replacing Patrushev, it gives Putin more command over a powerful body within Russia's leadership structure. The Security Council was seen by some as a pseudo shadow cabinet. He'll now have an ally in post, albeit a disgruntled one.

Finally, to me, this speaks to Putin's confidence right now. The start of the new presidential term, he's clearly emboldened. But it also screams instability.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has told reporters this evening that announcing a new defence minister makes sense as Russia's military spending balloons.

He said Russia was heading towards a situation similar to that of the Soviet Union in the mid-1980s, when 7.4% of Russia's GDP went on the military and law enforcement.

Mr Peskov said this is why Vladimir Putin wanted to hand the position to a civilian with an economic background.

"The one who is more open to innovations is the one who will be victorious on the battlefield," he said.

Vladimir Putin has likely grown frustrated with Russia's overall lack of progress in the war despite its current momentum on the battlefield, a Russian foreign policy analyst has said.

Ivan Klyszcz, from the International Centre for Defence and Security, said the "entire Kremlin" is focused on winning the war and the reshuffle should be "read in that light".

He told Sky News the Kremlin has a tendency to replace senior officials some time after a failure or defeat, or after they haven't performed at a certain level.

"With Shoigu that's part of the story. It has to do with... some of the defeats that Russia has faced in the battlefront in 2022 and lack of progress in the war for them in 2023."

Mr Klyszcz says that Mr Shoigu has been in a "weak position" for some time.

UK defence minister Grant Shapps has reacted to the news of Vladimir Putin's cabinet shakeup.

In a post to X, Mr Shapps says Sergei Shoigu has "overseen over 355,000 casualties" among Russian soldiers and caused mass suffering in Ukraine.

"Russia needs a Defence Minister who would undo that disastrous legacy & end the invasion - but all they’ll get is another of Putin’s puppets," he said.

This is not just a normal reshuffle but "serious instability right in the heart" of Russia's regime, a former MI6 intelligence officer has said.

Speaking to Sky News, Christopher Steele said Nikolai Patrushev being removed from his role as secretary of the Russian Security Council is "astonishing".

"It's important to understand that he's been one of Putin's closest allies, former head of the FSB and so on for many years... and was rated by people to be probably the second most powerful man in Russia after Putin himself.

"I think what this indicates is not just a reshuffle along normal governmental lines. It's really quite serious instability right in the heart of this regime," he said.

Mr Steele says it has been "clear" to Russia watchers for some time that Mr Patrushev was lining up his son Dmitri, the current agriculture minister, to be Mr Putin's successor.

"I think that this is, as I say, a very significant move by Putin," he added.

'Something much deeper' going on

Asked why Mr Putin would remove Mr Shoigu as defence minister at a time when Russia appears to have the upper hand in the war, Mr Steele says it could point to something "much deeper" happening.

"It's hardly ideal from a military point of view to replace your defence minister right at the time when you're launching a new offensive," he explained.

"This underlines to me that there is something much deeper going on here."

Mr Steele also characterised Mr Shoigu's switch to the Security Council as a "demotion" - but reiterated that Mr Patrushev, a member of the Russian president's inner circle, being moved to an unknown position was "extraordinary".

Sergei Shoigu's removal has "first and foremast come as a surprise", says our Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett .

Mr Shoigu has been part of the cabinet, and Vladimir Putin's cohort, for a "very long time", he says.

Bennett says his position came under threat last year as the late Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin launched a short-lived mutiny against the Kremlin.

"But when he was seen off, when that coup was seen off, Prigozhin died.... Sergei Shoigu's position seemed a lot stronger, actually," he says.

"He emerged from that crisis stronger, as did Vladimir Putin."

Bennett explains that Mr Putin has, by law, to dissolve his government as he starts his new presidential term.

"We were expecting a new cabinet, but I don't think we were expecting such a big change at the top.

"I think that reflects a few different things. First and foremost, I think Vladimir Putin... feels like he needs to do something new, certainly symbolically within the the war context," Bennett says.

Analysts say Vladimir Putin is looking to project an image of stability and satisfaction with his team's progress, with Mikhail Mishustin remaining in post as prime minister on Friday.

As he continues to confirm his top team, Mr Putin has also proposed Sergei Lavrov remain as foreign minister.

Valery Gerasimov, the chief of Russia's general staff, will remain in his position as well.
