Love the sound of the bells as they ring across campus? Want to see what the carillon actually looks like? One of our outstanding University Carillonists will take you behind the scenes to discover the instrument’s remarkable history and give you a glimpse of the 54 bells that occupy the Clocktower. Fisher Library Rare Books and Special Collections Discovery Session

Rare Books and Special Collections in the Fisher Library is brimming with unique and wonderful items, from medieval illuminated manuscripts and significant early printed texts in science and literature to first edition comics, science fiction and artists' books. With more than 170,000 items in our collections, this is a unique opportunity to view a curated selection of items on a particular theme up close and learn their significance under the careful guidance of Library staff. Quadrangle Heritage Tour

Our guided heritage tour has something for everyone from history buffs to the simply curious. This 60-minute tour highlights the stunning architecture of the Camperdown Campus and delves into the history and background of the Neo-Gothic building, including a visit to the Great Hall if access is possible, a viewing of the gargoyles and grotesques and other historic features of Australia's oldest university building. School of Chemistry Tour

Rediscover the Chemistry School - from DNA Nanorobots to sustainable energy solutions, the interdisciplinary collaborations led by chemists from the University of Sydney are working towards solutions for some of our biggest societal challenges. This walking tour will weave you through the corridors of the Chemistry School, showing you our researchers in action in the lab, and giving you the chance to ask questions about their world-changing work. Engineering and Technology Precinct Tour

The new Engineering and Technology Precinct shows the University's Wingara Mura design principles in action across nine levels of student spaces and cutting-edge research labs. The precinct has placed sustainability at the heart of its design, with energy-efficient lighting, a solar photovoltaic system on the roof, and surface heat reduction-conscious landscape design. Biomedical Engineering Tour

Based in our new Engineering and Technology Precinct, this lab tour will allow you to experience three hands-on practical workshops in microfluidics, human anatomy, and biosensing and signalling. Sydney Medical School Museum Tour

The Sydney Medical School commenced teaching in 1883, with just four enrolled students, one full-time academic and a single mortuary attendant. From these modest beginnings the school has flourished. Join us for a guided tour of the broad medical history collection and the rich past in the Sydney Medical School. Register your interest.  

Westmead Health Precinct Alumni Tour

Alumni are invited to join us for a tour of the Westmead Health Precinct, followed by morning tea. University of Sydney

The University of Sydney is the oldest University in Australia and has two excellent museums and an art gallery

Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney was the first University founded in Australia. Due to it's antiquity, there are an abundance of beautiful historic buildings surrounded by pleasant grounds and gardens for you to explore and photograph. The most notable of the buildings is the original Neogothic Quadrangle and Great Tower buildings which were finished in 1862.

In addition to the many beautiful old buildings the University also boasts two excellent museums and an art gallery, all of which have free admission. The Nicholson Museum of Antiquities features Australia's largest collection of ancient artefacts - many from the Mediterranean region including ancient Mesopotamia. At the Macleay Museum you can explore a huge collection of insects, natural history exhibits, historic photographs and more. The University Art Gallery has a very diverse art collection with over 3000 works of art from Australia and around the world. It also hosts some excellent changing exhibitions. With free admission all of the above are a great bargain and alternative to other museums that charge - ideal if you are travelling on a budget. All three are open from 10am to 4:30pm on weekdays and from 1pm to 5pm on the first Saturday of each month and every Saturday in January.

All told, the University of Sydney, while not always the first thing on many tourist's lists of places to see, is well worth the visit. Central Station is the closest station and is within walking distance, but there are also plenty of bus routes that will take you right to the campus. See below for more information.

How to get to University of Sydney by Train

By Light Rail or Train plus Bus: Exit at Central Station into Railway Square, cross Lee Street to Central Station Railway Square Stand M (a long, glass roofed bus shelter on George Street) (4 minutes), catch any of bus #412, 413, 436, 438, 439, 440, 461, 483, 480 or 483 going going west on George Street and get off on Parramatta Road at University Avenue. Walk south into the campus (3 minutes). If you prefer you can walk the entire way to the campus in under 20 minutes. You can also catch one of the above buses at Circular Quay Station or southbound on Elizabeth Street.
