Classic Safaris

These are just some of our favourite classic safari routes, some combine bush adventures and beach relaxation whilst others take you deep in to the heart of the African wilderness – these trips are considered classic for a good reason, they give you the opportunity to experience the best of your chosen destinations.

1. Kenya - Great Migration Safari and Beach

  • Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara
  • Spot big cats such as lions, leopards and cheetahs
  • Experience vibrant Masai culture
  • Watch the humpback whale migration in the Indian Ocean
  • Relax on the beautiful beaches of the Kenyan coast

Best time to go: August - September (peak season for both migrations)

This is a fantastic opportunity to witness some of the largest mammal migrations on the planet.

Firstly, head to Kenya on safari to the Masai Mara during the height of the Great Migration - one of the greatest wildlife shows on earth and if this is high on your bucket list then you will need to book early as it is a very popular time of year in Kenya.

The river crossings are an emotional experience; as the suspense builds you can almost feel the trepidation until one wildebeest has the courage to make a dash for the other side. There’s no doubt that you will be filled with excitement, heartache, adrenaline and joy as you witness mass herds of wildebeest and zebra frantically plunging through crocodile-infested river waters, with the survivors still needing to outwit and outpace the large number of predators who lie in wait on the other side.

For more details, take a look at our complete guide to where, when and how to see the Wildebeest Migration.

Masai Mara Wildebeest Migration

With our selection of striking safari lodges, you'll be perfectly placed in the heart of the Masai Mara to witness one of the greatest spectacles of the natural world as well as being surrounded by some of the densest lion populations in the whole of East Africa.

After spending a few days in awe of the Great Wildebeest Migration its time to leave the majestic Masai Mara and fly south to the beautiful Kenyan coast for the next instalment of your migration adventure, this time to go in search of humpback whales as they travel north towards warmer waters searching for suitable places to give birth to their young which are already 15 feet long and can weigh close to a tonne. This impressive whale movement started many months ago in the cold waters of the Antarctic. There are many other species to be seen such as dolphins and sharks so keep your eyes peeled.

If you are a wildlife fanatic and dream of seeing iconic species, this is a journey not to be missed.

If you're looking for an epic wildlife experience, then a safari in Tanzania will certainly tick all the boxes. Every year, millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Serengeti , in search of fresh water and grazing pastures.

This itinerary follows the migration during calving season, a particularly exciting time as thousands of wildebeest are born, as well as zebras and gazelles. The high numbers of young and inexperienced animals are a magnet for predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs who stalk the plains – making your chances of seeing a chase or kill very high.

Another highlight of this trip is visiting the stunning Ngorongoro Crater with stunning panoramic views from the ridge and a chance to see the Big Five on the crater floor.

As well as 4x4 safaris you’ll also try a canoeing safari, tree-top walks, a night safari and a walking safari sleeping out in the bush – all incredible experiences that will get your adrenalin pumping.

One of the joys of this unique Serengeti migration safari is being totally immersed in the pristine wilderness of one of the most famous national parks in Africa and having the freedom to explore some of the more remote corners where you'll encounter few other visitors.

This is an active eco-safari holiday with a difference, staying in a wonderful mixture of high-end luxury lodges, and close-to-nature tented Green Camps.

A safari is one of the most exhilarating bucket list experiences in the world, getting you up close to some of the world’s most remarkable wildlife and landscapes. From the iconic plains of the Serengeti to the lush wetlands of Okavango and the desert wildlife of Etosha, here are 12 of the best safari destinations in the world to inspire your safari adventure.

1. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Passionate Guides Tanzania (@passionateguidestz)

Serengeti National Park is an icon of Africa and one of the best safari destinations in the world for spotting the Big 5 and so much more. Located in northern Tanzania, this UNESCO-listed national park is one of the oldest ecosystems on earth. It’s filled with plants and animals that have barely changed over the past million years.

The park is an epic expanse of plains and grassland, dotted with all of the Big 5 and other safari favourites like giraffes, zebra, hyenas, cheetah and the rare African wild dog.

The Serengeti is also famed as the home of ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ – the Great Migration. Over two million wildebeest, zebra, impala and gazelle cross the Mara River in a thundering mass each year in search of greener pastures. The migration sets off annually around July towards the Masai Mara in Kenya. The herd then makes the 1,000km journey back to Tanzania around October or November when the rains set in.

The wildebeest must dodge stalking predators like lions and leopards on their journey, while huge clouds of migrating birds fly overhead. As the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, it’s an astonishing sight to behold.

2. Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Safari Trails (@safari_trails)

Venture over the border of the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya, the other half of the mighty Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. As one of the best safari destinations in the world, the Maasai Mara dishes up extraordinary wildlife viewing, including all the Big 5.

You’ll also likely spot giraffes, hippos and crocodiles lurking in the rivers, along with more than two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle that arrive in a thundering mass during the Great Migration.

Besides the incredible wildlife, the Maasai Mara is renowned for its rich culture. You can visit a traditional Maasai village where you’ll meet the Maasai people and witness their colourful traditions.

3. Kruger National Park, South Africa

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kruger National Park (@krugernationalpark)

Kruger National Park is the oldest and most iconic national park in South Africa. It’s also one of the top bucket list experiences on the whole continent. Covering a staggering two million hectares (the size of Israel or Slovenia), you’ll have a good chance of spotting the famous Big 5, the unique Little 5 , and everything in between.

There’s also reliable sightings and a high density of animals in the private reserves around the Kruger National Park. One of our favourite areas is the Karongwe Private Game Reserve. Here you can spot all the Big 5 and learn about the traditions and local deliacies of the Shangaan people at a local village.

Is Kruger or Serengeti better?

One of the most common questions we get from our guests is whether to visit Kruger or Serengeti. They’re two of the most iconic safari destinations in the world, and most people usually only have time to visit one of them on a safari trip, due to the large distance between them.

While you can’t go wrong with either Kruger or Serengeti, the best choice for you will depend on what you want to get from your safari. With Kruger, you can spot a wild range of wildife including the Big Five, and it’s more easily accessible, with a range of accommodation options. It’s ideal for those seeking convenience and flexibility, however it can also be more crowded for this reason. On the other hand, the Serengeti is more remote and typically more expensive as travel logistics are more complex. The pay off is that you can see an abundance of wildlife including the Big Five, and the breathtaking Great Migration. The park offers a more pristine wilderness experience and has unique activities like hot-air balloon rides. Ultimately, your choice should be based on the types of wildlife and activities you’re interested in, your budget, and the amount of time you have.

4. Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ngorongoro Crater (@ngorongoro_crater)

As one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the continent’s best safari hotspots. Located in the Crater Highlands of northern Tanzania, Ngorongoro is an ancient volcanic crater spanning 260 square kilometres. The crater is surrounded by a 600-metre high wall, and it’s the largest intact and unfilled caldera in the world.

It’s home to over 25,000 large game animals, including all the Big 5. The conservation area protects Tanzania’s last remaining population of the endangered black rhino. You can also spot cheetah, zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, spotted hyenas and the critically endangered African wild dog. The crater is also dotted with sparkling soda lakes where you can see hippos and massive pink flocks of flamingo.

Ngorongoro has also been home to humans for around three million years and occupied by pastoralist tribes, like the Maasai, for the past 2,000 years. You can visit a Maasai village and even see casts of the fossilised footprints found at Olduvai Gorge. These famous footprints prove humans were walking on two legs at least 3.7 million years ago.

5. Etosha National Park, Namibia

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Etosha National Park ORG (@etoshanationalpark)

Etosha is the greatest national park in Namibia, famed for its striking desert landscapes and abundant wildlife. You’ll have the chance to spot four of the Big 5 as there are no buffalo in Etosha, however you can spot them in the nearby Waterberg Plateau and Caprivi Strip. Meanwhile, the huge populations of lions and elephants make up for it.

Etosha is also one of the best places in Africa to see the white rhino and critically endangered black rhino. These precious creatures have been poached to near extinction on the continent, but you can still find them around the waterholes of Etosha.

The waterholes are also a great place to spot lurking lions, leopards, cheetah and hyena. You can also spot herds of elephants coming to get a drink and bathe in the water. With its unique desert-adapted animals, Etosha is undoubtedly one of the best safari destinations in the world.

6. Chobe National Park, Botswana

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chobe National Park (@chobe_national_park)

It’s all about elephants in Chobe, and this national park is one of the best safari destinations in the world to see these majestic creatures. There are around 120,000 elephants in the park and we love spotting them on a Chobe River cruise.

You’ll have the chance to see elephants, buffalo, lions and leopards come to the river bank to drink, while birds like the kingfisher hover over the water. The best time to spot the huge elephant herds is the dry season from May to October. Wildlife viewing is at its absolute best from August to October.

Unfortunately, rhinos are extremely rare to spot in Chobe after having their population decimated over the years. The good news is they are slowly being reintroduced to private areas of the park.

7. Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Samburu National Reserve (@samburunationalreserve)

Take a journey into the wild bushland of the Samburu National Reserve on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Here you’ll have the chance to spot a unique kind of Big 5 – the ‘Samburu Special 5’. These five rare animals can only be found in the Samburu ecosystem and include the Reticulated giraffe, the Grevy’s Zebra, the Beisa oryx, the Somali ostrich and the gerenuk.

You might even get to spot some of these animals on a special guided nature walk. You’ll be accompanied by an expert naturalist, who will share their wealth of wisdom on the plants and animals found in the area.

Along with the Samburu Special 5, you’ll also have the chance to see more famous animals including elephants and lions just like Elsa, the lion cub made famous in the award-winning book and movie ‘Born Free’. Samburu National Reserve was one of two areas where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised the lion cub.

You can get to know more about the region’s conservation and anti-poaching efforts in the nearby Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa.

8. Okavango Delta, Botswana

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Okavango Delta (@okavangodeltabotswana)

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a unique mosaic of islands, waterways, and lagoons, creating a rich environment for an abundance of wildlife. Known for its remarkable seasonal flooding, which contrasts against the dry Kalahari desert, the delta becomes a lush animal habitat. Travelers can explore this biodiverse world by mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe), with close-up encounters of animals like hippos, elephants, leopards and an incredible variety of birds.

9. Solio Game Reserve, Kenya

Located between the foothills of the Aberdares and the slopes of Mount Kenya, this privately-owned conservancy is one of the most successful rhino breeding reserve in the world. Founded in the 1970s, Solio Game Reserve provides a safe haven for both black and white rhinos, housing the largest population of white rhinos on earth. It’s a relatively hidden gem on the safari circuit, offering guests the rare chance to see not only large numbers of rhinos but also buffalos, zebras, giraffes, leopards, and lions among the grassland and acacia forests.

10. South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

South Luangwa National Park may be off the beaten track but it’s undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries. It’s home to endemic animals like Thornicroft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest and Crawshay’s zebra, found nowhere else on earth. You’ll also find the world’s highest naturally occurring population of leopards. As the ‘birthplace of the walking safari’ visitors can also embrace the unique experience of tracking and spotting animals on foot.

11. Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

View this post on Instagram A post shared by TANZANIA SMILE SAFARIS (@tanzania_smile_safaris_)

With its unusual landscapes dotted with giant baobabs, flat-topped acacias and termite mounds, Tarangire National Park is unlike anything you’ll see in Tanzania. The wildlife is just as captivating as the landscapes, as the park is renowned as one of the best places to view elephants. You can also see adorable tree hyraxes and over 300 recorded species of birds. The park is particularly spectacular during the dry season when animal concentrations are among the highest in Tanzania, driven to the Tarangire River.

12. Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mana Pools (@manapools_nationalpark)

Located in northern Zimbabwe along the lower Zambezi River, Mana Pools National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its wildlife and natural beauty. The name “Mana” means “four” in the Shona language, referring to the four large pools formed by the Zambezi River. The pools attract a high concentration of wildlife, making it a spectacular spot for game viewing. The park also offers some exciting experiences such as walking safaris and canoe safaris, so you can watch the wildlife from every angle, including elephants, hippos, lions and over 350 bird species.

Plan the ultimate African safari with these 12 bush-to-beach destinations

Caroline Lascom

One of life's greatest travel indulgences, an African safari can take years to organize. Since it requires a hefty budget, a couple of grueling days in transit and meticulous planning, chances are it will be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure you enjoy — and one you therefore shouldn't compromise on.

The safari component is generally less than five days for most travelers, leaving plenty of time to combine superb wildlife watching and a classic lodge experience with further exploration or relaxation. For some, this could also involve climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania or visiting Victoria Falls on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border. For others, it may entail wine tasting in South Africa or lazing on a pristine, palm-fringed beach with a cocktail in hand.

When it comes to blissed-out safari extensions, the Indian Ocean offers a few key commodities: undeveloped beaches, spectacular scenery, azure waters rich with marine life — and an abundance of luxurious resorts, including ones you can book with points.

Africa isn't the easiest place to get around, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible to see multiple destinations in one visit. All it will take is a little careful planning. Odds are you'll be required to fly way out of your way to major regional hubs such as Johannesburg 's O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) or Nairobi, Kenya's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).

While most safari-goers head to the beach to unwind at the end of their trip, there's also something to be said for decompressing from city life and a long-haul flight by adding the beach as a safari preamble. Regardless of which you choose to do first, know that you'll have an incredible vacation full of memorable moments.

Here are TPG's favorite destinations for that ultimate combination of going on safari and visiting the beach.

Bush: The Northern Circuit

Famed for its untouched landscapes and exhilarating wildlife encounters, Tanzania's Northern Circuit is the Africa of dreams. A showcase for the continent's highlights, this well-trodden itinerary features the world-famous Serengeti, snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, elephant-filled Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera.

Arusha is the gateway to the northern Serengeti, as it's a two-hour flight from the capital, Dar es Salaam. Depending on time and budget constraints, you can either fly between the parks, drive the entire circuit or do a combination of both.

Most itineraries begin with the Serengeti, Tanzania's crown jewel. Emblematic grasslands dotted with flat-topped acacia trees are home to more than 2 million animals, including the Big Five: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffaloes. Indulge the wonder of it all at a luxury lodge within eyeshot of a watering hole, or head to a semi-permanent tented camp that follows the great migration. In the remote Lamai Triangle, Singita Lamai River Tented Camp offers an intimate, off-the-grid safari experience and features just six luxurious tents, each with plunge pools.

A game drive along the valley floor of Ngorongoro Crater — around a three-hour paved drive south of the Serengeti — is one of the richest wildlife experiences on Earth. More than 25,000 mammals thrive here, including the world's largest concentration of predators, plus zebras, gazelles, warthogs, wildebeests, elephants, baboons and vervet monkeys. Within the conservancy, you can trace 2 million years of human evolution at the UNESCO-inscribed Olduvai Gorge, which preserves the earliest evidence of human ancestors.

Around a four-hour drive south of the crater is another must-visit spot: beautiful Tarangire National Park. It attracts fewer visitors and is beloved for its thriving elephant herds, which feature 2,500-plus animals, making them the densest on Earth.

Beach: Zanzibar

A breathtaking archipelago just 25 miles off Tanzania's Indian Ocean coastline, Zanzibar is everything its name suggests. Traditional dhows (one- or two-mast ships) set sail from bone-white beaches, vibrant coral reefs support diverse marine life and timeless Swahili villages are fringed by lush forests, coconut groves and spice plantations.

Zanzibar is one of the most accessible beach destinations on this list, with frequent direct services from Arusha via Air Tanzania. If you are traveling independently, the one-hour flight from the mainland costs around $180 round trip.

Relaxing on its beaches is certainly Zanzibar's main draw, but it's worth allowing at least a day to explore UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stone Town, one of East Africa's cultural highlights. A flourishing trading post for centuries, the old city's maze of streets is dotted with crumbling limestone and coral buildings, as well as historical churches, mosques and temples.

Just a 15-minute speedboat ride off Zanzibar's northeast coast, Mnemba Island is an unpretentious paradise. The tiny island, blessed with powder-soft sand and luminescent waters, is the setting for andBeyond's conservation-focused hideaway . Getting off the grid doesn't get much better than this. Days are spent snorkeling around the island (about a mile in circumference), swimming with dolphins, practicing yoga, paddleboarding, watching dik-diks scurry around the deck of your Balinese-style banda and enjoying some of the finest and most inventive food you'll find anywhere in Tanzania.

Bush: Masai Mara

The definitive safari destination, Kenya offers a blend of savannah, mountain, wildlife, beach and culture that never fails to inspire awe in those who visit.

The spectacular Masai Mara ecosystem forms the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti. A cinematic wilderness of tawny, acacia-dotted plains, the food chain plays out frequently and furiously right before your eyes. Home to a vast inventory of 450-plus animal species (including the Big Five) and glorious scenery, Kenya's popularity has been bolstered by post-pandemic travelers keen to limit border crossings.

For a less crowded safari experience, choose a lodge located on a private conservancy that offers opportunities to venture off roads (sometimes at night) in the company of expert naturalists without worrying about waiting behind multiple vehicles to view a pride of lions. Cottar's Camp has been in operation for over a century and combines a classic aura with luxe amenities and some of Kenya's finest (largely Masai) guides. Wherever you roam, you can expect to see prolific troupes of wildebeests, zebras, impalas, topis and gazelles — and their formidable predators.

While all safari lodges are not created equal, it's the daily rituals of life on the Masai Mara that are unforgettable. You can enjoy an early morning game drive, watch elephants congregate around a watering hole from your deck, treat yourself to a sundowner as sunsets blaze over the seemingly infinite horizon and gather around a campfire under star-studded skies.

Try to time your trip for the great migration, when more than 2 million wildebeests migrate across the Serengeti and the Masai Mara in what is undoubtedly the world's most spectacular wildlife event. Keep an eye on rainfall patterns to determine when is the best time to visit.

Beach: Lamu Island

Often likened to Zanzibar 20 years ago, UNESCO-protected Lamu Island is a picture-perfect paradise of rolling sand dunes, mangrove-fringed beaches and dazzling coral reefs. As East Africa's oldest trading center, it's a world apart from the rest of Kenya and offers a more peaceful retreat than the more developed beaches of Mombasa's north coast.

In the south, Lamu Town has preserved its medina-style architecture and retains a laid-back vibe. Donkeys and dhows are still the main forms of transportation, and the town's car-free streets, which are dotted with churches, mosques and temples, showcase the island's rich cultural heritage composed of African, Omani, Yemeni, Indian and Portuguese influences.

Over the last decade, Lamu has become something of a magnet for Europe 's celebrity set. Intricately carved coral merchant homes now house contemporary boutique hotels and galleries, hip rooftop bars mix stylish sundowners and a busy event schedule speaks to the island's growing wellness movement — notably yoga and meditation retreats.

Just outside Lamu Town, The Red Pepper House has five eclectic rooms decorated with Swahili furnishings, a lush forested setting, warm service and activities tailored to each guest.

Active travelers will also find plenty here to tempt them from the beach. Check out Kiwayu Island for windsurfing, kayaking, fishing and world-class diving and snorkeling.

If you are traveling independently, Lamu can be reached by air from Nairobi via Hahn Air Lines. Flights, which cost $190 round trip, land just across the channel from Lamu on Manda Island.

South Africa and Mozambique

Bush: kruger national park.

Impressive in scale and diversity, Kruger's 16 macro ecozones harbor an astonishing predator count — more than 1,500 lions, 1,000 leopards and 12,000 elephants — as well as wild dogs, zebras, white and black rhinos, giraffes, wildebeests, antelopes and an estimated 470 bird species.

The great appeal of Kruger — especially for first-timers — is its reliable wildlife spotting (even during the green season), unbridled comfort and never-ending "wow" factor that exhilarates even the most world-weary traveler.

When money is no object, the Sabi Sands Game Reserve is the pinnacle of the luxury safari experience. Home to the highest mammal concentration of any private reserve in southern Africa, you won't need to venture far to spot Africa's most charismatic denizens. In fact, it's not unheard of to spot all of the Big Five at Kruger in the space of a day. With only three vehicles permitted at a wildlife sighting at any given time, you'll avoid the feeling that you are riding a safari conveyor belt.

Acclaimed lodges such as Singita Lebombo, Chitwa Chitwa and Londolozi channel eclectic styles — from plush colonial suites to rustic Afro-chic abodes — and are constantly raising the bar with impeccable service, resort-style amenities and unrivaled access to some of Earth's best wildlife viewing. Lavish meals, sundowners, afternoon teas, poolside relaxation and bush walks punctuate the hours between early morning and late afternoon game drives. Many of Kruger's lodges also offer excellent children's programming.

Beach: Bazaruto Archipelago

Blessed with unspoiled natural beauty and impressive biodiversity, Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago offers the private island kind of experience that appeals to travelers with deep pockets who are looking to truly disconnect. For most visitors, the logistics are taken care of as part of a tailor-made, fly-in excursion arranged by a safari company.

Bazaruto and its even more far-flung sister archipelago, the Quirimbas Islands, are renowned for their serpentine, palm-fringed beaches where the diving and snorkeling, right offshore, are out of this world. An array of marine life, including whale sharks, manta rays, leatherback turtles, humpback whales and the very rare dugong (sea cow), has been documented here.

With activities and excursions tailored to couples and families, andBeyond's Benguerra Island Lodge is a destination unto itself. It offers luxurious beachfront casinhas (cottages) and cabanas surrounded by palm trees. Guests can take advantage of a swimming pool and an on-site dive center that organizes excursions to world-class dive sites like Two Mile Reef, plus other unforgettable activities, such as dhow cruises, horseback riding in the water and sportfishing excursions.

Frequent daily direct flights with South Africa-based Airlink are available from Johannesburg's airport to Mozambique's Vilankulo Airport (VNX), which sits about a 45-minute scenic boat ride away from the Bazaruto islands. The relatively painless, half-day journey will set you back around $580 round trip.

Bush: Majete Wildlife Reserve

Going by the moniker "The Warm Heart of Africa," tiny Malawi punches way above its weight when it comes to biodiversity.

Roughly the same size as Ohio, it's home to some of the continent's most spectacular landscapes, which span serrated peaks, mystical forests and bucolic grasslands. The Great Rift Valley bisects the country lengthwise, with the colossal Lake Malawi draped across the country's eastern border.

Malawi's lack of celebrity status helps facilitate a more authentic safari experience. It's also one of the most affordable and safest destinations in Africa — a great fit for independent travelers looking to go beyond the "Out of Africa" cliches.

Before a major legislative shake up in 2017, Malawi had earned the notorious distinction of being southern Africa's biggest wildlife trafficking center, mostly due to lax enforcement. Today, its conservation credentials are among the strongest in Africa.

Majete Wildlife Reserve, the nation's oldest park, is a symbol of Malawi's great restoration. Through a steady re-introduction program and community engagement, more than 5,000 animals now thrive within the reserve, including black rhinos, impalas, jackals, elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, sable antelopes and buffaloes. Enjoying Big Five reserve status, tourism at Majete is growing, but it remains a magical off-the-beaten-path wilderness ... for now.

The upscale Thawale Camp is ideally located near a watering hole inside the reserve and combines a wilderness safari experience with an authentic ambience, fine food and warm service.

Beach: Lake Malawi

Described as the world's most vibrant freshwater body, UNESCO-designated Lake Malawi is a perfect safari postscript for more budget-minded travelers and those making a return trip to the continent. It offers all the attributes of an idyllic island escape with beautiful bays and coves, sandy beaches and rocky islands, plus marshes inhabited by baboons, monkeys, hippos and prolific birdlife, including kingfishers, egrets, fish eagles and cormorants.

Free from the logistical challenges of many bush-to-beach itineraries, it's just a one-hour transfer from Malawi's Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) to the lake's most scenic beaches, including chilled-out Likoma Island, where you'll find barefoot-chic Kaya Mawa , a boutique ecolodge perched on sandy shores with views of Mozambique in the distance.

The water here is as blue as any tropical destination, and even shallow water teems with cichlid fish, which shimmer in hues of silver, gold, orange and blue. The lake's three distinct water layers don't generally mix (it's a type of meromictic lake), providing an intensely fertile environment where plants, land animals and marine life thrive.

An estimated 950 species of fish populate the lake — more than any other place on Earth — according to the beloved British naturalist David Attenborough. This rich aquatic atmosphere makes it a truly unique underwater safari destination. The real crowd-pleaser is the mbuna fish, which will famously take food directly from your hands.

Zambia and Mauritius

Bush: south luangwa national park.

Victoria Falls, which is lovingly referred to as "the smoke that thunders" by those from the area, is Zambia and Zimbabwe's famous calling card and one of the world's most breathtaking natural wonders. But that's just the start. Far removed from the more commercial safari experiences of its neighbors, the two countries lend themselves to travelers keen to explore beyond their safari vehicles. The region excels at immersive cultural journeys, walking safaris and adrenaline-infused pursuits on the churning rapids of the Zambezi River.

Know, though, that Zambia and Zimbabwe are not for everyone. Their poor infrastructure and limited accommodations can be a challenge or an adventure, depending on your perspective.

Zambia's South Luangwa National Park is the place where the walking safari originated. Diverse habitats encompass plains, woodlands, rivers and marshes and support a predator and prey inventory that rivals that of any African safari destination. The pinnacle of wildlife viewing in Zambia, Luangwa is known for its leopard population, as well as rare creatures such as hartebeests, sables and roans. Buffaloes, impalas, pukus, waterbucks and giraffes are omnipresent, and herds of elephants (up to 70 is not unheard of) and wading hippos can be seen congregating along the Luangwa River.

One of the more luxurious camps in the reserve, Chinzombo, offers comfortable accommodations, expert guides and a prime river location.

Beach: Mauritius

One of the most alluring Indian Ocean destinations, Mauritius is much more than just a dreamy island paradise. Gorgeous beaches, crystal-clear lagoons and forested preserves provide the backdrop for thrilling adventures, ecotourism and wellness pursuits. For a culture fix, the museums and mansions of Port Louis are filled with fascinating artifact maps and curios that trace the island's storied history.

Belle Mare beach, on the east coast, has retained its unspoiled charm. Its warm, azure waters beckon snorkelers and divers, as Mauritius is ringed by the world's longest unbroken coral reef. With its string of luxe resorts, hip bars and gourmet restaurants, the developed resort of Grand Baie, on the northwest coast, channels a more cosmopolitan vibe.

Active types will find plenty of ways to interact with the rugged, mountainous landscape. Hikers can take on the 4.5-mile steep, uneven trail to the top of the UNESCO-inscribed Le Morne Brabant mountain. Meanwhile, the coastal forests of Île aux Aigrettes provide sanctuary to an array of endemic and endangered wildlife species.

You will likely spend a day in transit to reach Mauritius from Zambia, and you may even require an overnight layover. There are regular nonstop flights from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) in Lusaka, Zambia's capital, to Johannesburg, from where its a four-hour flight — operated daily by South African Airways — to Mahé, Mauritius' main island.

Mauritius caters well to travelers looking to splurge and you''ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to exclusive resorts and private island experiences: The Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita, Shangri-La Le Touessrok and One&Only Le Saint Géran, to name a few.

Namibia and the Seychelles

Bush: etosha national park.

An accessible and less visited safari destination, Namibia captures the imagination of families and adventure seekers with its enigmatic desert landscapes, wild and rugged coastline, colossal sand dunes and rare desert-adapted mammals, insects and reptiles.

Known as the "Place of Mirages," Etosha National Park combines Namibia's best wildlife watching with an austerely beautiful landscape of golden plains, dazzling salt pans and dense thickets. What really sets Etosha apart, though, is just how easy it is to spot its wildlife species.

Across stark, vast plains, watering holes draw elephants, gazelles, giraffes, jackals and black and white rhinos, as well as marauding lions, cheetahs and more elusive leopards. The floodlit Okaukuejo watering hole ranks among Africa's bucket list experiences thanks, in part, to its nightly game-watching vigils.

Antelope species here are loaded with superlatives: You'll find the continent's smallest (African antelope), rarest (blackface impala), biggest (eland) and bounciest (springbok) all inhabiting this eye-catching landscape.

Located on Etosha's southern fringes, in the privately owned Ongava Game Reserve, Ongava Lodge comprises 14 rustic chalets and a large pool and dining area overlooking a nearby watering hole. Little Ongava — also within the private reserve — offers a more exclusive experience with just three luxurious suites with outdoor showers and private plunge pools.

Beyond Etosha, thrill-seekers can track wildlife on foot, sandboard down massive dunes in Swakopmund and soar over the Namib Desert in a hot air balloon.

Namibia is celebrated for its bold conservation initiatives and well-developed tourist infrastructure. While it's one of the most straightforward destinations in Africa for renting a car and exploring independently, guided tours here are considered the gold standard. Most travelers from Europe and the U.S travel to Namibia through Johannesburg or Cape Town . Air Namibia flies direct from Frankfurt to Windhoek, and Qatar Airways ' direct flights to Doha, Qatar, offer frequent stopover routes to the U.S. and Europe.

Beach: Seychelles

Famed as a luxury hideaway popular with royalty and celebrities, the Seychelles archipelago has an otherworldly beauty. Ribbons of sugar-white sand gently slope to waters in every shade of blue, and tropical habitats filled with rare indigenous palms give way to vanilla and spice plantations and orchid fields.

The most visited islands, Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, draw gilded honeymooners to their ultra glamorous resorts — including a luxurious Four Seasons outpost and the boutique Mango House Seychelles — but there's also a fine selection of family-oriented properties (including points hotels ) within striking distance of breathtaking beaches.

Anse Lazio frequently ranks as one of the world's best beaches; its turquoise, reef-sheltered waters teem with marine life. Lushly forested granite cliffs frame the sheltered bay of Anse Louis, one of Mahé's more remote beaches, and it was on heavenly Anse Source d'Argent that Hollywood movies "Cast Away" and "Crusoe" were filmed.

Uninhabited until the late 18th century, the Seychelles archipelago is hailed as the "Galápagos of the Indian Ocean." UNESCO-inscribed Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve on Praslin is a lost world of rare endemic species, including the famous coco de mer, a massive palm tree thought to have grown in the ocean. On the remote Aldabra atoll, thousands of giant tortoises weighing up to 500 pounds thrive, having evolved in isolation.

From Namibia's capital, Windhoek, you'll need to connect through Johannesburg. Air Seychelles is the only airline that flies the five-hour, nonstop route to Mahé several times a week.

Africa Safari Tours & Vacations

Take a walk on the wild side on an African safari.

The word “safari” means “journey” in Swahili. And a safari in Africa is all about the journey. While seeing a leopard munch on a freshly caught gazelle or spying a curious lion cub venture away from its mother’s protective embrace will be highlights of your trip, you’ll discover the journey is as much a part of your trip as the destination.

The road-trip games you play with your new travel mates, the feeling of the wind (and maybe a little dust) in your hair when you’re travelling down long, winding roads, and the young Maasai boy who waved at you as you passed him along the road will stay with you long after you return.

Float over the Serengeti

The only thing more magical than witnessing the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti? Seeing it from the sky in a hot air balloon. As the herds of wildebeest and thousands of other animals travel from Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can watch their journey and enjoy incredible views from a unique perspective.

Okavango Delta

Canoe in the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta has a unique system of waterways that are home to an immense array of wildlife. The best way to explore it is in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Where we stay on safari.

Camping in Africa

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

How we get around

Africa overland truck

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

For more info on our overland trucks, see our Africa overland page .

African Safari FAQs

When is the best time to go on safari.

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Read more about the best time to go on safari .

Where is the best place to go on safari?

The best place to go on safari depends on what kind of animals you’d like to see and what other activities you’d like to do in destination. We offer safaris to some of the best safari destinations in eastern and southern Africa, like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and more.

Read more about how to choose your ideal African safari .

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colours is the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our accessible travel page for more information.

What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Responsible travel

Our stance on Animal Welfare

This world and the animals that call it home are precious, and we believe it’s our responsibility to help preserve them. We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance.

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

Read more about our Animal Welfare Policy here .

Where to go on your first safari in Africa

Tourist watching an elephant crossing a river in the Chobe National Park in Botswana, Africa; Concept for travel safari and travel in Africa

So you want to see a lion in the wild? Terrific. Now comes the tricky part: choosing where to go on your first safari.

Which countries offer the easiest introduction to the continent for first-time travelers? Which countries are best for wildlife?

Let us help you cut through the overwhelming options and plan your first safari to Africa for blockbuster wildlife watching – without feeling overwhelmed.

Meerkats stand to attention as humans walk by

Planning a safari in Botswana

Why botswana.

Water-based safaris, exclusivity, privacy and high-quality camps in captivating areas: Botswana is one of Africa’s premier wildlife-watching destinations. Its prolific wildlife inhabits extraordinary landscapes, including the Chobe River, the Okavango Delta  and the salt pans of Makgadikgadi .

The easiest choice for your trip,  Chobe National Park is home to the world’s largest concentration of elephants, as well as a host of easy-to-spot big cats, buffaloes, giraffes and zebras, making it perfect for first-timers. The best way to see Africa’s elephant capital is to board a boat and cruise the Chobe River’s wildlife-rich shores. From here, you can travel into the Okavango Delta, where you can splurge on a luxury safari and take a mokoro  (dugout canoe) through the wetlands, before forging on into the Makgadikgadi salt pans to mingle with meerkats.

Botswana’s appeal and ease, however, come with a (big) caveat: the cost. To avoid the pitfalls of mass tourism, most luxury lodges and camps lie in concession areas rented out by the government to enforce a high-value, low-volume responsible-tourism strategy. The best reserves sit in the swamps of the Okavango Delta, and visitors fly in on small bush planes from Maun or Kasane. Mobile safaris – group trips that take you from site to site, often involving camping along the way – are a more cost-effective alternative: you can combine time in  Moremi Game Reserve  with Chobe National Park.

Best time to visit for a safari in Botswana

The high and dry season from June to October is the best wildlife-watching time , and also when water levels are generally at their highest in the Okavango Delta, allowing you to glide along the channels in a mokoro .

Where to stay on safari in Botswana

In and around Chobe National Park, we recommend  Chobe Game Lodge , Chobe Safari Lodge  and Chobe Bakwena , with Chobe Game Lodge being the only one inside the park. For photographers, Pangolin Chobe Hotel has specialist boats with swivel seats and gimbal mounts to snap that Attenborough moment on the Chobe River.

You can combine Chobe with the Okavango Delta through scheduled group mobile safaris with Bush Ways or Letaka . If you’re after a luxury experience in an exceptionally wild, isolated area, Mombo Camp is probably the Okavango’s most exclusive and legendary lodge, with predators galore (and a pretty price tag). Mma Dinare Camp (which offers affordable road transfers), 4 Rivers Camp , Shinde Camp and Camp Moremi are well situated for spotting excellent big game. Xugana Island Lodge , Setari Camp and Mopiri Camp are wonderful for experiencing the waterways, and offer fishing and birding opportunities by boat. Mogotlho Safari Lodge is also accessible for self-drivers, and occupies a lovely position on the Khwai River near Mababe. Want a more adventurous, budget-friendly option? Try a fully catered, accommodated mokoro campout excursion that departs from Sitatunga Camp , south of Maun.

Trips to meet the cute meerkats of the Makgadikgadi salt pans can be arranged through San Camp, Jack’s Camp or Camp Kalahari, with Planet Baobab as the best budget-friendly option with self-drive access.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Botswana

Stays at isolated camps in the Okavango Delta start at roughly $650 per person, per night and can go up to an eye-watering $4000 a night. At approximately $300, Chobe National Park lodges are more affordable – so stretch out your days here to keep costs down. For better pricing on accommodations, travel during the shoulder season (April to May and October to November). Finally, check the distance between your luxury lodge and Maun to reduce the return-ticket cost. Some camps offer road transfers or boating access between camps to minimize travel costs.

Animals crossing the Mara River during the Great Migration between Tanzania and Kenya

Planning a safari in Kenya

Kenya ’s wildlife offering is outstanding, with the Great Migration in particular at the top of many bucket lists – so it’s no surprise that safaris have been a thing in Kenya since the very concept was invented (indeed, safari translates to “journey” in Swahili). Do keep in mind, though, that this track record does make Kenya one of the busiest, most popular wildlife destinations on the continent.

A renowned annual phenomenon, the Great Migration sees millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River from the Serengeti in southern Tanzania into Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve . The country’s semi-nomadic Maasai communities and their time-honored warrior traditions are another source of fascination. Visitors can support community-powered tourism by visiting the private reserves surrounding the Mara, which are leased to different safari companies. A guided bush walk with a Maasai warrior will let you experience this culture’s deep connection with the land.

The main safari circuit couples Lake Nakuru with the Masai Mara and Amboseli (where Mt Kilimanjaro provides a staggering backdrop). Tsavo West , Tsavo East and Samburu are popular add-ons, if you have extra time. Any combination of these parks should ensure ample sightings of big cats, plenty of elephants, a few rhinos and all of the plains animals, such as buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and all manner of gazelle and antelope species. Want even more? Extend your stay by another week and scale Mt Kenya , Africa’s second-highest peak (after Kilimanjaro).

Most travelers just pass through Nairobi , staying long enough to visit Nairobi National Park . An extraordinarily well-stocked park on the cusp of one of Africa’s largest cities and easily accessible, Kenya’s original game reserve has wildlife in abundance, from lions, leopards, and buffaloes to the endangered black rhino and around 400 species of birdlife.

Generally, Kenya is viewed as a better choice for family safaris, those on a budget and those on a tight timeline.

Best time to visit for a safari in Kenya

July to October and January to February are the best times to see the Great Migration, when a million-plus wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, cross the crocodile-infested Mara River to graze on the lush grasses of the Masai Mara. With unrestricted visitor numbers, some areas can get crowded.

Where to stay on safari in Kenya

Kenya has hundreds of excellent lodges and tented camps, standards of service from local staff are generally high, and tour operators are experts at the logistics of moving between national parks for each leg of your safari itinerary.

Cottar’s 1920s Camp has entertained guests in high style for over 100 years, while “gentle on the earth” takes on a whole new meaning at Emboo River Camp , whose team will have you floating through the grasslands of the Masai Mara in the region’s first electric game drive vehicles.

Good value but still luxurious, Ol Tukai Lodge sits within Amboseli Park, with views of Kilimanjaro from the bar; nearby Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge is a comfortable family-friendly option. In Nairobi,  Giraffe Manor  provides a memorable breakfast spread before a visit to the city’s park; all accommodations in the upmarket Karen and Langata areas are close to the main entrance.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Kenya

Masai Mara National Reserve is the most wallet-friendly location for seeing the wildebeest migration. Despite having a shorter migration season, Kenya has more flights, more tourists, stiffer competition and a greater variety of affordable accommodations than next-door Tanzania. Expect to pay anything from $150 to $1000 per person, per night.

For a cheaper safari, book between the short and long rains (January to March), when prices are usually lower than during the peak season. Nairobi National Park charges $40 to non-residents for entry, while admission to Masai Mara is $80 for 24 hours if you stay outside the reserve, and $70 if you stay inside.

A family of five wild giraffes standing in a dry savannah landscape near Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha National Park in Namibia, Africa.

Planning a safari in Namibia

Why namibia.

Two reasons: self-driving independence and dramatic desert scenery. While a 4WD African safari is always an ambitious undertaking, Namibia has good roads, well-equipped campsites and reasonably priced rental vehicles. This is one of the easiest Southern African countries to explore from the driver’s seat.

The classic circuit starts in Windhoek , where you’ll rent a fully equipped 4WD camper van or a decent gravel-road car. From there, you’ll head to Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert for incredible vistas, circle up to Swakopmund for coastal adventures and end at Etosha National Park , where elephants, rhinos and giraffes strut their stuff.

Etosha is Namibia’s version of South Africa’s Kruger National Park, with roads and facilities suitable for a self-driving budget safari. Each public camp overlooks a busy water hole, where game moves in and out to drink during the dry season. The camp is floodlit by night, which means you won’t need to leave once you settle in.

Best time to visit for a safari in Namibia

Etosha is well-known for its productive water holes, and peak game viewing is from June to October, when wildlife flocks to these oases dotted throughout the park. This is also a cooler time of year to climb the dramatic dunes such as  Dune 45 at Sossusvlei.

Where to stay on safari in Namibia

Arranging everything through the  Gondwana Collection is hands-down the easiest and best way to organize a self-driving safari. This group has a portfolio of accommodations in all the key tourist spots, ranging from well-serviced campsites to glamping tents and swank lodges filled with character. Favorites include the quirky Desert Grace and Namib Dune Star Camp (with its alfresco beds) near Sossusvlei, and The Delight in Swakopmund. A sister company,  Namibia2Go , offers car rentals with comprehensive insurance.

As an alternative, you can book campsites and chalets inside the parks with the government-run Namibia Wildlife Resorts . Okaukuejo Rest Camp lies inside the perimeter of Etosha and is the place to watch at the water hole.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Namibia

At about $800, a full week’s vehicle rental is cheaper than a single night’s stay at a luxury lodge in the Okavango Delta. Due to the vast distances between destinations in Namibia, however, fuel expenses can add up fast. National parks and private campsites offer affordable camping fees, though luxury accommodations will (understandably) be more expensive. For camping, expect to pay $20 to $50 per person, per night for camping; for lodges, $100 to $300.

Visitors watch a lion walk in front of their open safari vehicle at Madikwe Game Reserve at the border with Botswana

Planning a safari in South Africa

Why south africa.

Expect bush, beach and fine wine. From iconic Kruger National Park to the picturesque landscapes of KwaZulu-Natal , South Africa offers a safari experience that caters to all levels of adventurers.

Kruger is the easiest and most rewarding safari destination for first-timers and budget travelers. You can see the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes), as well as cheetahs, giraffes, African wild dogs and hundreds of bird species. Drive the park’s paved roads yourself if you’re on a budget, or visit private reserves like Sabi Sands or Thornybush for exclusive guided experiences, plus a better chance to see the Big Five in a short period.

Lesser-known reserves in KwaZulu-Natal are equally impressive. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is just as accessible as Kruger from the city of Durban , and has excellent facilities for travelers on all budgets; expect to spot rhinos, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes and wildebeest. (The big cats are a little more challenging to see here.) Nearby Phinda Private Game Reserve offers stunning high-end stays – plus the possibility of a beach day or scuba diving at Sodwana Bay .

Madikwe Game Reserve in North West Province is close to the Botswana border and a four-hour drive from Johannesburg , making it popular for South Africans looking for a safari. It’s also a malaria-free option for families with young children.

Combine any of these safari parks with a flight south to Cape Town , and you’ll add fine wine, world-class restaurants and a seaside safari – visiting the  African penguins of Boulders Beach – to your itinerary.

Best time to visit for a safari in South Africa

While South Africa is a year-round destination , most visitors love the cooler, dry season between May and August. During these months, wildlife is easier to spot as vegetation is more sparse and animals gather around water holes.

Where to stay on safari in South Africa

There are plenty of affordable self-catering rest camps in Kruger National Park and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi run by SANParks , the government parks agency. Kruger’s southern zone is prime game-viewing territory, with Skukuza , Lower Sabie and Letaba rest camps all favorites. Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi has terrific views, while Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is a superb, privately run option that supports the local community.

Plush camps and lodges in the private reserves come with highly trained guides who can take you out on foot or by vehicle. You can’t go wrong at Saseka in Thornybush, Dulini in Sabi Sands, Tanda Tula in  Timbavati , Jaci’s Safari Lodge in Madikwe or any of the &Beyond accommodations in Phinda.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in South Africa

Rates range from $100 to $200 per person, per night in government-run camps. Mid-range prices start at $300 to $700 per person, per night, with a corresponding bump in accommodation and guiding quality.

Hippos in the Seronera area of the Serengeti N P, Tanzania

Planning a safari in Tanzania

Why tanzania.

Limitless plains, the epic migration and relaxing dips in the Indian Ocean. Tanzania ’s northern safari circuit includes the amazing  Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater . Exploring these places for 10 days to two weeks is a sure way to fall in love with Africa. You should consider adding a few days on the island of Zanzibar  (officially called Unguja) to make your dream trip even more memorable.

Tanzania and Kenya share similarities, both having plentiful wildlife parks and excellent safari operators. Tanzania’s vibe, though, is generally less stressful – perhaps due to the fact that the Serengeti is nearly 10 times bigger than Kenya’s Masai Mara, offering endless horizons and greater habitat variety.

In the heart of the Serengeti, the Seronera River provides big-cat and herbivore sightings year round, making it popular with visitors. Kogatende and Lamai, on the Mara River, are ideal for observing river crossings – with fewer tourists. Private reserves such as  Grumeti allow viewings of the migration without the crowds (and for a price).

The Ngorongoro Crater is only a short drive to the east from the Serengeti. In this giant collapsed volcano (or caldera), animals like lions, elephants and black rhinos are enclosed as they prowl a complete ecosystem of pretty plains and dramatic forests. Note that such assets do draw the crowds in peak season.

Best time to visit for a safari in Tanzania

Plan a visit between January and March to witness the migration of wildebeest – and their newborns – passing through the Ngorongoro and Ndutu regions. (Get as early a start as possible to avoid day-trippers.) The best time to witness the famous wildebeest river crossings in the Serengeti is during the peak season, from July to August.

Where to stay on safari in Tanzania

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is an upmarket accommodation inspired by traditional Tanzanian architecture; its popular mobile-safari offering is Kiota Camp. Run entirely by women,  Dunia Camp is a luxury tented property situated in prime lion territory. Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a great value-for-money permanent lodge conveniently located near the entrance to the Ngorongoro Crater. For an even more budget-friendly option, consider  Bougainvillea Safari Lodge . For a different kind of stay, book a stay  Gibb’s Farm , which is situated on a working coffee farm and offers campfire storytelling and other fun extras.

On the coast, Chumbe Island in Zanzibar/Unguja is a highly rated, ecofriendly property that offers sensational snorkeling in a protected marine reserve. In the historic heart of  Stone Town , the best-value stay is Zanzibar Coffee House , dating from the 19th century.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Tanzania

Expect to pay anything from $250 to $950 per room, per night, during your stay in Tanzania. Entry fees at Serengeti National Park for foreign tourists are $70 (peak season) and $60 (low season). To visit the Ngorongoro Crater, you’ll pay $250 for a vehicle, in addition to the same entry fee. These fees are typically included in organized safari packages.

Several southern carmine bee-eaters perching on an ochre-coloured rock in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Planning a safari in Zambia

Why zambia.

Track rhinos, witness an awe-inspiring cascade and join a walking safari to experience nature up close. Indeed,  Zambia is celebrated worldwide as the birthplace of the safari on foot, during which, under the guidance of two armed rangers, rhino tracking in nearby Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park will bring you close to these magnificent animals – only a taste of what’s to come at South Luangwa.

Livingstone , the tourist capital of Zambia, lets you gaze at another (non-living) marvel: mighty Mosi-oa-Tunya, better known as  Victoria Falls . If the 935 cu meters (33,000 cu ft) of water that pours over the falls each second is not heart-pumping enough, there are plenty of other thrilling activities to enjoy , such as white-water rafting on the Zambezi River and bungee jumping (also available on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls). During July and August, you can even take a refreshing dip in the natural infinity pool at the edge of the falls.

Several small and rustic camps in the Luangwa Valley cater just to walking safaris – a thrilling alternative to traditional game drives. These camps are mainly located in South Luangwa National Park .

Best time to visit for a safari in Zambia

Peak game viewing is from June to October, and Victoria Falls is at its best on the Zambia side from March to May.

Where to stay on safari in Zambia

Flatdogs Camp in South Luangwa National Park offers family-friendly luxury. In Livingstone, Jollyboys Backpackers provides a vibey base from which to explore town. The Victoria Falls Waterfront provides a free shuttle to the main event – but if you want to stay at the falls with unlimited access, the swish Royal Livingstone Resort is top-notch; the three-star Avani Victoria Falls Resort is next door.

Green Safaris operates a great circuit of camps in Zambia if you want to combine Victoria Falls with South Luangwa. Live the Robinson Crusoe life at Sindabezi Island Lodge on the Zambezi, and then head into the bush at Shawa Luangwa Camp . You can’t go wrong with walking-safari operators Time + Tide (its  Kakuli is a classic camp that’s been open since 1950), or Robin Pope .

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Zambia

Consider getting the KAZA UniVisa , a special $50 pass that allows for unlimited crossings between Zambia and Zimbabwe, plus a one-day trip to Botswana (via the Kazungula border crossing), within 30 days. Budget $250 to $700 per person, per night for lodging.

Young woman sitting at the edge of Victoria Falls, Livingstone, Zambia

Planning a safari in Zimbabwe

Why zimbabwe.

The adventurous choice for a first-time safari, Zimbabwe has arguably the best guides in Africa. The easiest way to experience it all? Spend three days in Victoria Falls. Since it’s one of the country’s most popular tourist towns, you’ll find plenty to see, do and eat.

The meandering rainforest walkway in Zimbabwe is where the majority of Victoria Falls viewpoints lie. This is a better option for experiencing the falls during during the dry season (May to October), when water levels on the Zambian side lessen. On some evenings and during the full moon,  Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe remains open at night for dazzling stargazing.

After a day of adrenaline-fueled bungee jumping, white-water rafting, zip-lining or hovering in a helicopter above Batoka Gorge, afternoon tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel , served every day between 3pm and 6pm, offers some refined relaxation, as you share a tiered stand of pretty sandwiches and delicate pastries beside the manicured lawns. If this lies beyond your budget, enjoy a simple gin-and-tonic sundowner – or head to the Wild Horizons Lookout Café .

The wildlife around here is less prolific than nearby Chobe National Park in Botswana (which you can visit on a day trip or easily combine with Victoria Falls). Yet a boat cruise allows for spottings of hippos, crocodiles and the occasional elephant. A 45-minute flight or two-hour drive away,  Hwange National Park is where you’ll find bigger game.

Best time to visit for a safari in Zimbabwe

There is fantastic wildlife viewing during the dry months, from May to October. Victoria Falls is at its peak from March to May.

Where to stay on safari in Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge sits on a ridge and overlooks a water hole frequented by buffaloes and other beasts. Nkosi Guest Lodge is a pretty, upmarket inn, while Ilala Lodge Hotel is just a 10-minute walk from Victoria Falls. The Victoria Falls Hotel, the iconic grande dame, offers perhaps the best views. Further afield, you can ensconce yourself in the bush at  Mpala Jena , about 40km (25 miles) upstream. In Hwange, The Hide , Camp Hwange  and Somalisa are all visitor favorites.

Budgeting and costs for a safari in Zimbabwe

Entry to Victoria Falls is $50. With the wide range of accommodation options, you can spend $150 to $700 per person, per night.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on  National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late  Dian Fossey  back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

8. Sri Lanka: adventure family holidays

Adventure awaits: trekking, abseiling, climbing, safaris and surfing

Though modest in size, jewel-shaped  Sri Lanka  is a diamond of a destination for adventurous travellers, especially those who want to get to know the culture and wildlife of the destinations they visit and enjoy  Sri Lanka's great food .

One of the most rewarding aspects of visiting this dramatic Indian Ocean island is the fact that its hiking trails also afford incredible wildlife-watching opportunities. This certainly holds true while trekking to Single Tree Hill. Starting in Shanthipura, Sri Lanka’s highest village, the trail traverses the forest habitats of wild boars, sambar deer and leopards. And don't miss 10 reasons to discover Sri Lanka's east coast .

You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to full-on safaris. For  first-time visitors to Sri Lanka , we especially recommend Yala National Park  and Gal Oya National Park, both of which teem with birds, elephants, sloth bears, leopards, jackals, marsh mugger crocs, and much more besides. For added atmosphere (and lively birds), you can’t beat taking a golden hours safari through Yala .

Experienced climbers will want to tackle K1 (also known as Kirigalpotta), the highest point of the Horton Plains Sanctuary. Traversing grassland, marshland, cloud forest and rocks, the trail is nothing but diverse, and you might just see leopards along the way.

But Sri Lanka’s adventure activities aren’t limited to its interior. The island’s coastline offers  incredible surf , with  beautiful Sri Lankan beaches  to rest upon between riding those waves. There are plenty of  places to go whale-watching in Sri Lanka , too, with  trips from Mirissa  of longstanding repute.

Adventure awaits: Mayan exploration, hiking, canyoning, cave-diving and wildlife-watching

If your idea of adventure holidays involves intrepid treks through dense rainforests to explore ancient cities — with a whole lot of wildlife wonders to be wowed by en route — Mexico should be top of your wish list.

To experience exactly that in a single trip, you might want to take the  Mayan Trail .  Tulum’s  archaeological treasures aren’t exactly off the beaten track, but their spectacular (and unusual) coastal setting makes them a must-visit.

What’s more, Tulum is within reach of the beautiful Bacalar Lagoon, and the lesser-visited Kohunlich ruins. Located deep in the jungle, and best known for its Palace of Masks, this ancient Mayan city exudes a truly magical atmosphere.

With over 360 bird species recorded here, and being home to over 100 species of mammal, Calakmul Biosphere Reserve is the perfect place for wildlife watchers. Find out  where else to see animals in Mexico .

In addition, given that this sprawling site also includes over 6000 Mayan structures, most of which are still being excavated, Calakmul Biosphere Reserve is also a sure-fire winner for wannabe explorers.

Hailed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it’s worth devoting a day to exploring  Chichén Itzá . Alternatively, if you’re staying in the  Cancun region  and find yourself hankering for activities beyond the beach, book a Chichén Itzá tour with added adventure  — take your pick from ziplining, driving amphibious vehicles, and rafting underground caves.

Talking of caves, if you’re feeling brave, the  Yucatán  Peninsula is known for its cenotes — underwater limestone caves that deliver refreshing dive experiences. Discover the  cool places to visit in Mexico .

Meanwhile, Sumidero Canyon National Park, located in the state of  Chiapas  and accessed via boat, offers a smorgasbord of outdoor activities, from kayaking and abseiling to zip-lining and mountain biking. Or you could always book a nature-oriented trip that includes visiting Chiapa de Corzo , where craft markets and ancient ruins await.

Given the country’s diverse offerings – we haven’t even mentioned all those  beautiful Mexican beaches  and   Mexico's incredible food  — you might want to read up on  things not to miss in Mexico  before booking your trip.

Rough Guides’  customisable Mexico itineraries  also offer plenty of inspiration, whether you want to immerse yourself in Mayan culture during a  self-drive trip around Yucatan , or fancy an  authentic experience in Central Mexico .  If you're travelling with little ones in tow, don't miss our guide to visiting Mexico with kids .

Adventure awaits:  hiking, helicopter-riding, kayaking and feasting

Known as Hawaii's Garden Island ,  Kauai  is a lush and lesser-visited destination that made it into the Rough Guide to the 100 Best Places on Earth .

With over half its 550-square miles reserved for conservation and preservation and tonnes of tropical forests, hiking trails, zip lines, and excellent surf, Kauai epitomises adventure, with its iconic Na Pali Coast delivering peak pulse-quickening activities and scenery.

Often featured in Hollywood adventure movies, the Na Pali Coast is inaccessible to vehicles, which means you’ll have to get into Jurassic Park mode to see its staggering rock spires. Take your pick from paddle-boarding, kayaking, or booking a  private plane or helicopter trip  that offers exhilarating views of both the coast and  Waimea Canyon .

Hardcore hikers will want to consider hiking Na Pali’s Kalalau Trail. Definitely not for the inexperienced or faint-hearted, this showcases why Kauai is regarded as one of the world’s best hiking destinations.

Starting alongside Kee Beach, the 11-mile trek to Kalalau Valley involves increasingly challenging scrambles and climbs. The first two miles of the trail to Hanakapiai Beach aren’t too tricky, though you’ll still have to clamber through dense vegetation to reach it. From the beach, a sub-trail leads to the thundering, jungle-bounded Hanakapiai Falls.

Keen to up your hiking game? Discover hiking tips  that’ll serve you well wherever you are in the world.

After spending your day surfing, hiking, or  zip-lining Kauai’s tropical forests , you might want to enjoy fine food while learning about local legends and history at an  Island Dinner and Luau Kalamaku Show . Though known as an adventure holidays destination, Kauai’s certainly not short of cultural experiences.

If Kauai’s unspoiled remoteness and sense of adventure have sparked your interest, you might also fall for the  surfer’s holy grail of the remote Marshall Islands , an archipelago located between Hawaii and the Philippines. Alternatively, get the lowdown on all six of  Hawaii’s freely visited Islands .

Adventure awaits: volcanic islands, matchless wildlife, stunning scenery and unique history.

It’s quite humbling that thirteen scarred volcanic islands and more than a hundred islets, scattered across the ocean should have been so instrumental in changing humanity’s perception of itself. Yet it was the forbidding Galápagos Islands that spurred Charles Darwin to formulate his theory of evolution by natural selection, catapulting science into the modern era.

Galapagos Island still gives an unparalleled insight into the mechanics of nature at one of the world’s most treasured wildlife destinations . Today the archipelago’s matchless wildlife, stunning scenery and unique history make it arguably the world’s premier wildlife destination.

The animals that have carved out an existence on the dramatic volcanic landscape have a legendary fearlessness. This results in close-up encounters that are simply not possible anywhere else on Earth. Witnessing first-hand the mating dance of the blue-footed booby and snorkelling with sea lions, turtles, penguins and sharks are just a couple of the unforgettable experiences that await you.

The Galapagos is undoubtedly one of the most tempting destinations for adventure holidays in South America. You'll find even more ideas for your holiday in our guide to incredible South American journeys .

Besides all the other benefits, the Galapagos is also great for a family vacation. To prepare for such a trip, read our guide to Ecuador with kids .

Follow in Charles Darwin's footsteps with this compact tailor-made trip to the Galapagos Islands . Spot the giant tortoise, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies and sea lions. All in their natural habitat, lounging and feeding as you walk or swim by. You can also find more ideas for your trip in our Galapagos itineraries .

Where to stay on Galapagos Islands

Puerto Ayora is the nerve centre of the conservation programme, and headquarters of both the Charles Darwin Research Station and the Parque Nacional Galápagos. Home to more boats, tour brokers, hotels and restaurants than anywhere else in the islands, Puerto Ayora is also the best place for budget travellers to find last-minute places on cruises.

The 6 Best Kauai Helicopter Tours

Admire the Garden Island's waterfalls, canyons and peaks from the air.

Best Kauai Helicopter Tours

Courtesy of Blue Hawaiian Helicopters

The Hawaiian island of Kauai features lush green mountains, dramatic coastal landscapes, crystal-clear ocean waters and unbelievable scenery everywhere you look. However, it's hard to take it all in from a car or even a boat – there's just too much to see, and much of the island isn't accessible on land. That's why Kauai helicopter tours are so popular, because they let visitors see all the island's attractions from the air, making it easy to scale the highest cliffs and enjoy a bird's-eye view of Kauai's many valleys. Using both traveler opinion and expert input, U.S. News tracked down the best Kauai helicopter tours. Don't leave the island without experiencing one of these unforgettable flights.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tours – Kauai Eco Adventure

Price: From $389 Duration: 50 minutes

Blue Hawaiian's Kauai Eco Adventure affords travelers the chance to see the beauty of Kauai from an otherworldly perspective. Narrated by the pilot, who's also a certified guide, the flight takes you to Manawaiopuna Falls, also known as "Jurassic Park" falls, Olokele Canyon, through the beautiful Waimea Canyon, and along Kauai's north shore, which features the stunning sea cliffs of the Napali Coast. Depending on the weather, you may also be able to view Mount Waialeale, a dormant volcano known as one of the "wettest places on Earth," that receives around 450 inches of rain each year. Reviewers report that the tour is excellent, fun and a must-do in Kauai. They also praise the pilot's commentary.

Flights are available daily starting at 8 a.m. Blue Hawaiian also operates private charters on Kauai.

Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours – Kauai Helicopter Tour

Price: From $359 Duration: 1 hour

Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours offers private tours of the Garden Island with up to four passengers on each flight. The Kauai Experience tour takes you to see the beauty and wonder of the Napali Coast, the splendor of Waimea Canyon, and if the weather permits, Mount Waialeale. Travelers say the views are fantastic and appreciate the small size of the helicopter, which allows everyone to enjoy a window seat. Visitors who chose to fly with the doors off of the helicopter call the excursion a little nerve-racking at first, but exhilarating.

Children are welcome on the tour, but must be at least 7 years old to fly with the doors on and at least 12 to fly with the doors off. Flights are available daily beginning at 8 a.m. The company also offers a specialized photography tour during which travelers dictate the flight path so they can cater it to their interests.

Safari Helicopters – Deluxe Waterfall Safari

Price: From $309 Duration: 1 hour

Travelers call this tour the highlight of their Kauai vacation thanks to the friendly, skilled pilots and the awe-inspiring views. The flight covers more than 100 miles, featuring lush mountains, dramatic gorges and canyons, waterfalls, and more. Expect to see the unmatched beauty of the Napali Coast, Waimea Canyon and many of the most famous natural wonders on the island.

Flights are offered daily beginning at 8:25 a.m. The company also offers a Canyon Landing Safari, which includes a 30-minute stop at the Kauai Wildlife Refuge.

Ali'i Air Tours & Charters – Kauai Helicopter Tour

Price: From $350 Duration: 1 hour

Ali'i promises no middle seats on its Kauai tour, so each passenger will have exceptional views of Waipo'o falls, Hanapepe Valley, Hanalei Bay and more. Plus, each of its tours are private, so you won't need to share the small helicopter cabin with strangers. Travelers are wowed by the scenery and praise the experienced pilots; a few reviewers were repeat passengers. Some recommended opting for the doors-off option for an extra thrill.

Tours depart several times daily throughout the morning and afternoon. Ali'i also runs an airplane tour of Kauai, as well as a Pearl Harbor airplane tour, which departs from Kauai and spends the day at the Oahu memorial.

Air Ventures Hawaii – Big Kahuna Kauai Air Tour

Price: From $169 Duration: 1 hour

Eco-conscious tourists may want to consider this tour from Air Ventures Hawaii. According to the company, its GippsAero GA8 Airvan uses less fuel than a typical helicopter. Plus, there are no middle seats, so everyone enjoys a thrilling view from the extra-large bubble windows. What's more, the aircraft flies at a slower speed than a helicopter, allowing more time to take in the views. The flight soars past waterfalls, the Kilauea Lighthouse, Lumahai Beach and Waimea Canyon, among other sites. The sights earn rave reviews, and many travelers offer equivalent praise for the pilots.

Flights depart daily in both the morning and afternoon. Air Ventures Hawaii also operates private tours.

Airborne Aviation – Hughes 500 Doors-Off Helicopter

Price: From $319 Duration: 50 minutes

If you're up for an adventure, or just want to capture some spectacular photos, consider this doors-off tour from Airborne Aviation. Flights are limited to four passengers, meaning everyone enjoys a window seat. Without the barrier of windows or doors, you'll be able to snap incredible images of Kauai’s shoreline, waterfalls and canyons. Flyers rave about the views and the skilled, professional pilots. Reviewers do warn, however, that without doors or windows, the ride is quite windy.

Flights are offered daily starting as early as 8:15 a.m. Private tours are also an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fees for Kauai helicopter tours start at $309 per person. However, prices will vary by company, tour length and inclusions.

Tipping is not required, but if you'd like to provide a monetary gesture of gratitude to your pilot/guide, plan to tip between $15 and $20 per person.

Weight limits may vary based on the aircraft, but Federal Aviation Administration regulations state that individual passengers cannot weigh more than 275 pounds and the total group cannot weigh than 650 pounds.
