One day trip to Lonavala – An amazing Experience

While quite a few times I have been to Mumbai and Pune, I never got a chance to visit this in-between heavenly place called “Lonavala”, but always remained in my to-visit list . As an exciting traveler and based in Chennai , I always wanted to escape the heat and humidity and experience the natural beauty of Lonavala. Finally, 2 weeks back I had a business meeting in Mumbai and greatly I managed to grab a day from my busy schedule to explore 625 meters above sea level, Lonavala with few of my friends. Thanks to the monsoon that arrived late this year, it was just the right time for us to get started. Otherwise, the ideal time to visit Lonavala is between June-September, when the rain hardly agrees to stop. Since we were in a leisure mood, I didn’t want to explore all places notably in Lonavala but our target was just to hang around and have a good time.

The day started at 5 am for us as we head into the cab to reach the destination. This is place is located 96 KM away from Mumbai (accessible from the express highway) and I must say the travel itself looked like the destination. The greenery, blooming picturesque view, wonderful tunnels, and occasional rain droplets made our entire drive extremely pleasant. We reached around 8 am and decided to quit cab, as the trek was more fun to choose. Our first point was “ Bushy Dam ” which is the most sought after place for visitors. You have to climb a little to reach the dam (without footwear and rent cost for footwear is 20rs) and this view was breathtaking.

The entire place looked snowy with the white water dashing on each step. It started raining as we stepped on the flowing chill water and this made the experience really enjoyable. After splashing and playing like kids in waterfalls for a long time we decided to munch a little. We found mind-blowing hot vada-pav and chai (not so expensive) that just went perfect with the flow.

Moving ahead, it was already 11 am and planned to trek till tiger’s leap which is about 4-5 km from the bushy dam. Trekking was the most enjoyable part of the journey; the climate was superb to walk with rain showering once in a while with the cool wind making the atmosphere so charming. The juicy sweet corn (maize) served with chili powder, lemon and salt is not something to be ignored. It was almost a challenge to trek around this mountain region; however, being an experienced trekker this was not scary at all.

Finally upon reaching Tiger’s leap also called as Tiger Point the view was simply stunning. We saw the entire view of Lonavala , and huge mountains covering them. It was a perfect blend of cool breeze and mist which made us stay there for a long time. We then had a chance to have hot ginger tea and bajia’s in foggy weather, never will I forget!

We came down pretty fast and stopped near the bus stop to find a good pure vegetarian hotel in Lonavala. And we found hotel Chandralok (located near the bus stop), one of the best budget hotels I would say in Lonavala. I had lip-smacking pure veg thali that included Roti, Sabji, Dal, Rice, Raita, Sweet Dish and lot more, served with utmost love and respect by waiters that most other hotels fail to offer. Rates were reasonable, but most importantly the food was awesome!

On our way back we managed to shop for Lonavala’s famous Maganlan chikki and popular ready-to-make juices! Although there are many other places to visit in Lonavala like Wax museum, Rajmachi Point, Lohagard Fort, etc, that I will probably visit next time! Rest, I was relaxed and refreshed being at this Nature’s Paradise, loved it totally!

one day trip lonavala

At a distance of 11 km from Lonavala, 59 km from Pune & 107 km from Mumbai, the Karla Caves or Karle Caves are a complex of ancient Indian Buddhist rock-cut cave temples located at Karli near Lonavala, Maharashtra. It is one of the best Lonavala tourist places and also among well known historical places to visit near Mumbai & Pune protected by Archaeological Survey of India. Karla is one of the most famous centers of early rock-cut architecture in India. The caves are excavated nearly 100 m on a high spur of the chain of hills on the north flank of the Indrayani valley. These caves were developed over two periods - from 2nd century BC to 2nd Century AD and in 5th - 10th Century AD. The oldest of the cave shrines is believed to date back to 160 BC, having arisen near a major ancient trade route, running eastward from the Arabian Sea into the .....

2 Lions Point

one day trip lonavala

At a distance of 12 km from Lonavala Railway Station, Lion's Point is a vantage point located midway between Bhushi Dam and Aamby Valley in Lonavala. It is one of the popular viewpoints in Lonavala and also among the must include places in Lonavala tour packages . The view from Lions Point is majestic and panoramic. One would see dozens of small waterfalls, lush green hills, and lakes around during monsoon season. It is one of the famous places to visit in Lonavala . The wind is extremely strong at this place and it was quite thrilling to see many adventurous people get close to the edge to get 'that' living-on-the-edge photograph. The drive to the point is also equally scenic The Shiv-ling peak is a conical peak that can be seen towards the left side of Lion's Point. Timings: 6 .....

3 Tiger's Leap / Tiger's Point

one day trip lonavala

At a distance of 12 km from Lonavala Railway Station and 12 km from Tung Fort, Tiger's Leap or Tiger's Point is a scenic viewpoint situated at Kurvande on the route towards Aamby Valley from Lonavala. It is one of the must see tourist places in Lonavala. Tiger's Leap, also known as Waghdari, is a cliff-top with a sheer drop of over 650 m, offering a wide view of the hills. The point derives its name from its resemblance to the shape of a leaping tiger. It offers spectacular views of forests, lush greenery, waterfalls and lakes around. The sunrise and sunset views from here are mesmerizing. There is a small waterfall near to this viewpoint, which flows during the monsoon months only. It serves the purpose of relaxing in the water better than Bushy dam, as the force of the fall is higher. Also, after the brief steep descent, the fall becomes a stream with a fair amount of force to go all the way down to the base of the Tiger's Leap. The site is frequented by various tourists .....

4 Bhushi Dam

one day trip lonavala

At a distance of 6 km from Lonavala Railway Station, Bhushi Dam is a masonry dam on the Indrayani River in Lonavala, Maharashtra. Bhushi Dam is one of the top Lonavala tourist places and a very popular weekend getaway from Pune and Mumbai. The Dam is located in the backdrop of scenic hilly terrains between Lonavala and INS Shivaji. The dam was built in late 1860s for the Great Indian Peninsular Railway as a source of water for their steam engines. Water from the dam was carried to Lonavala , Khandala and the reversing station of the railways by cast-iron pipes. In the rainy season, when the Bhushi dam overflows, the water flows over a series of steps and then over some easily accessible rocky terrain. The terrain and the water make for a fun combination and this is why Bhushi dam gets crowded on weekends as well as during the holidays. There is a waterfall located .....

A Total of 70 Team Members and the place had activities for all. The rocket ejector at the very beginning is a must try activity. Our deal included day pass activities along with Paintball or Atv and Buggy Ride or Flying Fox. We did the Paintball as a group activity and everyone had a great time. All the activities are super fun and one should visit the place with friends & family as there are lot of activities for kids as well. The meals included were lunch and high tea at the PnF resturants & was very well taken care of by Mr Balu and histeam. Special thanks to Prachi and the front desk team for proper co-ordination and making our trip memorable.

Around Mumbai and Pune if you are looking for some thrill..this is the place to go to.. It's awesome and has soo many activities to keep you occupied from morning till night. The day pass gives you access to 90% of the rides and a few more dangerous ones are only the paid ones. There is something for everyone.. If you want xtreme adventure, moderate one or just wanna eat and drink and spend some time playing indoor games with frnds..its all in there. The restaurants are good and service is awesome.. Try the Parsi cafe.. Staff is very courteous.. I suggest go on a weekday if you are not the type who wants too much ruah..then you will be able to cover all the rides.. The Dog walk, pony ride and many types of shooting and archery are also great!

Big annual vacation is passé; indians now prefer micro holidays around the year, data exclusively shared by makemytrip shows the number of people taking more than three trips a year rose by over 25 per cent in 2023 than 2019.

Listen to Story

one day trip lonavala

“Direct air connectivity and easy access have played a pivotal role in putting domestic/ short-haul micro-trips firmly on the radar, with affordability—both land and air—serving to sustain the momentum,” says Rajeev Kale, president and country head (holidays), MICE, Visa-Thomas Cook (India).

Driven largely by young working professionals, millennials and Gen Z, who want to utilise all their long weekends and holidays, these short-duration trips are seen as a key way to unwind and relax amidst a fast-paced life. In fact, travel is no longer seen as discretionary spending but has become an integral part of life. “Extended weekends and festivals/ hallmark holidays are propelling a desire to discover new locales while enjoying bonding time with family/ friends,” says Kale. No wonder, 51 per cent of bookings for such 2-4 day trips are for two people, and 20 per cent of the bookings are done for groups or families, with more than four people travelling together.

Given the rise in urban disposable incomes, it is the top metros—Mumbai, followed by Delhi and Bengaluru—that are driving the trend with the highest instances of weekend getaways and staycations, as per the MakeMyTrip data.

These travellers are not merely seeking budget stays; almost 20 per cent of hotel bookings for this kind of travel fall in the tariff range of Rs 7,000 and above per night, with about 10 per cent reservations made for hotels with tariffs of Rs 10,000 and above per night.

Consequently, micro-trips—travel destinations four to eight hours away—become the preferred choice for those looking for a quick getaway from their busy routines. While cooler climates are the go-to places during summer season, for Mumbai, Goa, Lonavala, Pune and Karjat are the most preferred destinations all year round. For Delhi, it’s Rishikesh, Jim Corbett and Amritsar; for Bengaluru, it’s Coorg and Chikmagalur.

Daniel D’Souza, president and country head, holidays, at SOTC Travel, says that well-heeled consumers are also showing high interest in easy visa destinations such as Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bali, Vietnam and the UAE.

According to the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), India’s travel and tourism industry will reach a market size of $23.72 billion (Rs 1.98 lakh crore) by this year, with an estimated annual growth rate of 9.62 per cent.
