norwegian cruise line by age

Norwegian Encore is Norwegian Cruise Line’s Biggest Cruise Ship as of 2019 at a whopping 169,116 tons an holding 3998 passengers and 1735 crew which is a passenger ratio of 2.3 passengers per crew member.

Her sister, Norwegian Bliss, closely follows this at 168,028 tons. The newer ships Prima and Viva are smaller and hold fewer guests; this is a conscious effort by NCL to maintain service on their ships; Prima holds 3215 guests with 1388 crew and a passenger-to-crew ratio of 2.3.

Which IS NCL’s Smallest Ship?

Norwegian Spirit is NCL’s smallest ship at 175,904 tons, holding 2018 passengers and 912 crew. However, after a recent renovation, I am dying to try out all the styles and classes of the larger vessels.

Norwegian Cruise Line has spent fortunes renovating its fleet in recent years, thus you can expect the same level of style and decor on many of their ships. The decision is based in itinerary, if you like the large ship experience offering facilities such as laser quest and racing tracks. Or indeed the more laid back feel of smaller cruise ships.

Norwegian Cruise Line ships from newest to oldest — the complete list

Gene Sloan

What's the newest Norwegian Cruise Line ship ? Knowing the answer is more important than you might think if you're planning a Norwegian cruise.

The newest Norwegian cruise ship is typically also the Norwegian ship with the most modern, up-to-date cabins and the most enticing mix of restaurants, bars and attractions. It's the right choice if you want the creme de la creme of the Norwegian fleet as your floating home away from home.

Right now, the newest Norwegian cruise ship is Norwegian Viva , which debuted in August. It's the second ship in Norwegian's new Prima Class of vessels, which began debuting in 2022 with the arrival of Norwegian Prima .

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Other relatively new Norwegian Cruise Line ships include Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy. All began sailing in the last six years.

In all, Norwegian operates 19 cruise vessels. On average, the line comes out with about one new ship every 18 months, and it typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 30 years before retiring them. The oldest Norwegian Cruise Line ship, Norwegian Spirit, is 25 years old.

Norwegian's newest ships are generally far bigger and much more amenity-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of activities on a Norwegian cruise vacation, you'll want to stick to vessels built in the last 12 or so years.

In many cases, Norwegian Cruise Line's oldest cruise ships — built in the 1990s and early 2000s — are just half the size of the line's newest vessels and have fewer venues on board. Still, even these smaller ships offer many attractions compared to some vessels at competing lines.

Here is a list of every Norwegian Cruise Line ship currently in operation, ranked from newest to oldest.

What is the newest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

The newest Norwegian Cruise Line ship is Norwegian Viva. As noted above, it debuted in August . Measuring 143,535 gross tons and carrying 3,099 passengers at double occupancy, it's almost identical to Norwegian's last new ship, Norwegian Prima. Both ships are part of the line's new six-ship Prima Class series, which will be rolling out through 2028.

Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima are notably smaller vessels than other new Norwegian cruise ships unveiled over the past 15 years. But they still have nearly as many restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top attractions as you'll find on the bigger vessels.

TPG sailed on the maiden voyages of Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima and has covered them extensively. For more on the ships, see the following guides and reviews:

What is the oldest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

The oldest Norwegian Cruise Line ship is Norwegian Spirit. Unveiled in 1998, it's not just the oldest Norwegian Cruise Line ship but the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship — far smaller than the newest Norwegian vessels. At 75,904 tons, Norwegian Spirit is less than half the size of the recently unveiled Norwegian Encore, and it carries just 1,966 passengers — about 2,000 fewer than the Norwegian biggies.

In part because of its smaller size, Norwegian Spirit also offers fewer (but still quite a few) venues and attractions than newer Norwegian vessels. In all, you'll find 13 food outlets on Norwegian Spirit, including two main restaurants, a casual buffet eatery, and versions of the line's signature Cagney's steak house and French eatery Le Bistro. There are more than half a dozen bars and cafes.

Deck-top attractions on Norwegian Spirit include several pools, whirlpools, waterslides, a basketball court and a jogging track. The ship also has a casino, spa, nightclub and theater.

What new Norwegian Cruise Line ships are coming?

Norwegian Cruise Line currently has four new cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Norwegian Aqua in April 2025. It'll be the third ship in the line's new Prima Class series.

Additionally, three more ships in this Prima Class series are on order for delivery in 2026, 2027 and 2028, respectively.

Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line

All four of these coming ships, including Norwegian Aqua, will be somewhat bigger than the first two vessels in the series to allow for more cabins and public areas. The last two ships in the series will also be expanded to accommodate new, bigger fuel tanks that can hold methanol — a cleaner-burning type of fuel.

The Prima Class vessels are under construction at a Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.

What is the newest Norwegian Cruise Line ship available for booking?

Norwegian Aqua is the newest Norwegian Cruise Line ship you can book now. While the ship isn't yet sailing, its initial voyages scheduled for April 2025 are already on sale, as are future sailings through April 2026. The three other Norwegian ships on order have yet to open for bookings.

What is the newest class of Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

The Prima Class is the newest class of Norwegian ships. For now, there are only two vessels in the class that you can sail — the recently unveiled Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima. The class will eventually be made up of at least six vessels.

The series is destined to massively expand Norwegian's footprint in the cruise business and, if all goes according to plan, significantly transform the brand. The line currently operates 19 vessels around the world. Assuming it doesn't retire any of its older ships over the next few years, it will grow to 23 ships by 2028 with the addition of four more Prima Class vessels.

Including the just-unveiled Norwegian Viva, that's a 28% increase in its fleet size in just five years.

At 143,535 tons, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima are notably smaller than the vessels Norwegian has added to its fleet in recent years. The line's last new ship before the addition of the two vessels, the 2019-built Norwegian Encore, was about 18% bigger than Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima at 169,116 tons.

Norwegian executives have said the smaller size of the new Prima Class ships would give the line more options in designing itineraries; the vessels are able to access smaller ports around the world than the bigger Norwegian ships can.

What's the difference between newer and older Norwegian Cruise Line ships?

Newer Norwegian Cruise Line ships are generally bigger than older Norwegian ships — sometimes much bigger. As a result, they have room for many more onboard venues and attractions than the line's older vessels.

On Norwegian's relatively new Breakaway Plus Class vessels (Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape), you'll find multiple pools, waterslides, a kiddie splash zone and — on most of the ships — a sprawling go-kart racing track. Each vessel also offers real Broadway shows in big, state-of-the-art theaters as well as sprawling spas, casinos that fill half a deck, dedicated children's play zones and more than 2,000 rooms.

Additionally, the two newest ships in this series, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Joy, have large gaming and virtual reality zones called the Galaxy Pavilion.

In short, they're like giant floating versions of the megaresorts you find in the Orlando or Las Vegas areas, and they appeal to people who like a megaresort experience.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian ship

Norwegian's older ships, in many cases, are about half the size of the line's newer ships and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While Breakaway Plus Class ships can hold around 4,000 passengers, based on double occupancy, the line's oldest vessels are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Norwegian's oldest ships are a good choice for vacationers who want to try Norwegian but aren't eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet thus appeal to a subset of Norwegian fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get that. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

Related: Don't miss out on these Norwegian loyalty perks

Because of their size, Norwegian's oldest ships can operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports worldwide can handle a ship the size of Norwegian Encore.

Note that all Norwegian ships are regularly renovated and upgraded every few years, so even the oldest Norwegian cruise vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, their eateries and bars have been entirely renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

Norwegian Cruise Ships by Size, Age and Class (Updated 2022)

Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Cruise Line has an active fleet of seventeen ships with a further two ships due in 2022-23 ( Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva ) plus, a further four more ships due between 2024-27.

The fleet is primarily based in the United States and sails frequently from the ports of Miami and Port Canaveral. However, they do also sail from New York.

Additional sailings take place throughout Europe, including Southampton.

In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet and how they compare to each other.

Introduction to Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line or NCL as it is more commonly known amongst cruisers started off back in 1966. However, it didn’t actually cruise from Norway originally!

It was founded by two men, Knut Kloster and perhaps more famously known now, Ted Arison (of Carnival Cruise Line ).

Their first vessel Sunward , a modified car ferry which also provided passenger services operated between the ports of Southampton and Gibraltar. It wasn’t long after that that Ted Arison left to found Carnival Cruise Line and Knut Kloster grew Norwegian Cruise Line to what it is today.

It wasn’t until 1971 that Norwegian Cruise Line had its first custom-built cruise ship, Starward delivered into service. Like the original Sunward the two ships also had car-carrying capacity, albeit via a well-concealed stern (rear) door system.

Fast forward to 2000 and NCL was sold to Star Cruises (a subsidiary of Genting Hong Kong) – this lasted until 2007 when Star Cruises sold 50% to an investment management company ( Apollo Management ) and then in 2013 the company reorganized again to become Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

Since 2013, the company has acquired two further cruise brands ( Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises ) and continues to grow the NCL fleet with several new builds announced for the current decade.

Norwegian Cruise Line Frequently Asked Questions

Is norwegian cruise line going to survive.

Whilst NCL has been one of the slowest to return to service (with Norwegian Getaway still not due back in service until November 2022) the cruise line has taken on additional debt to manage the day-to-day operations of the company and therefore it is more than likely to stay around!

What is the largest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

Norwegian Encore is currently the largest NCL ship at 169,116 GRT and able to carry 3,998 passengers.

What is the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

The smallest NCL ship is Norwegian Spirit at 75,904 GRT and able to carry 2,018 passengers – half of the largest ships in the fleet.

Which Norwegian Cruise Line ship is the newest?

Norwegian Prima will be the newest ship to join the fleet in August 2022.

Which Norwegian Cruise Line ship is the oldest?

Norwegian Spirit is the oldest ship in the fleet. Which entered service in 1998 and was last refurbished in 2020.

Is Norwegian Cruise Line owned by Royal Caribbean?

No. It is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. They also own luxury brands Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all norwegian cruise ships new builds.

Actually, NCL has possibly one of the most complicated fleets as a good majority of their ships are fairly old (compared to some of the other cruise lines).

Norwegian Sky for example was originally constructed as Costa Olympia , but was actually sold during construction to NCL and sailed as Pride of Aloha from 2004-2008.

Both Norwegian Star and Norwegian Dawn were both originally ordered for Star Cruises ( Superstar Libra and Superstar Scorpio respectively) but ended up being transferred to NCL before they launched.

Norwegian Spirit was built as SuperStar Leo for Star Cruises and sailed with them from 1998 until 2004 when she transferred to NCL and was renamed.

Norwegian Jade was previously named Pride of Hawaii for NCL America. She entered service in 2006 and was transferred to NCL, renamed and has been sailing for them since 2008.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

Final thoughts.

Norwegian Cruise Line is a large cruise line in the industry, but has been overtaken by many others ( Carnival Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean to name just two) – however, NCL has been groundbreaking when it comes to bringing new ideas to the cruise industry.

They were the first to offer a more casual-relaxed dining approach, with any-time dining instead of the traditional two-set timed dining system that other lines previously (and still) use.

Thanks to the SS Norway (which NCL acquired in 1979 – then named France ), Norwegian rebuilt the liner as a cruise ship and added vast amounts of extra space for entertaining cruise passengers – something that set the boom in large cruise ships in the industry going.

These days, Norwegian is a very popular cruise line that still brings out a number of ‘firsts’ over other lines (such as Go-Karting at sea), and whilst their fleet is on the slightly older side, they will have some much newer and larger vessels being delivered over the next few years.

Norwegian Cruise Line has a fleet of 19 cruise ships that offer passengers large-vessel luxury vacations.

NCL is a popular cruise line for its laid-back, freestyle approach to cruising. Their newest and largest vessels boast go-kart tracks, F1 simulators, rock climbing walls, water slides, and more.

We’ll compare Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by size, age, and class to help you decide which vessel is right for your next cruise vacation.

Table of Contents

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships by Size: Biggest to Smallest

When comparing cruise ships, size is the most popular choice. Cruise ships are typically measured using gross tonnage(GT), a measure of a vessel’s internal volume.

Although size isn’t everything, it is a quick way to assess the number of facilities, restaurants, activities, and entertainment options available on a ship.

Below is a comparison of Norwegian Cruise Lines’ ships by size, arranged from largest to smallest:

What Are The Best NCL Ships?

When it comes to choosing the best NCL ship, personal preferences play a significant role. While some passengers may prioritise amenities and entertainment options, others may value affordability or a quieter atmosphere. Take some time to assess what matters most to you during your cruise experience—the ship’s age and amenities, the onboard activities and entertainment, the overall atmosphere, or even the dining options.

Understanding your preferences will help you make an informed decision that aligns with your desires, ensuring you have the best possible experience onboard an NCL ship.

Newer ships like Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Prima are great for teenagers

If you’re a teenager or traveling with teenagers, newer NCL ships such as Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima offer a fantastic array of activities and entertainment options that cater specifically to this age group.

These ships are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including water parks, thrilling waterslides, and even dedicated teen lounges. The teen lounges provide a space for teenagers to socialize, engage in fun activities, and make new friends while enjoying their cruise vacation.

Additionally, the onboard entertainment on these newer ships is designed to appeal to a younger audience, with high-energy shows, concerts, and parties. From Broadway-style performances to live music and dance clubs, teenagers will have no shortage of exciting experiences to enjoy aboard these ships.

Older ships have been refurbished and offer lower fares

If budget is a significant factor when choosing an NCL ship, you may want to consider the older ships that have been refurbished. These ships often offer lower ticket prices without compromising on the overall cruise experience.

NCL regularly invests in refurbishing their older ships, ensuring that they maintain a high standard of quality and comfort. These renovations include updates to staterooms, public spaces, dining options, and even the addition of new onboard activities.

By choosing one of the refurbished older ships, you can enjoy the amenities and features of a modern cruise ship while saving costs on your ticket price. This is a great option for budget-conscious travellers who still want to experience the best of what NCL has to offer.

Often we're asked if size affects price. The cost of a Norwegian cruise isn't directly correlated with size. You won't find that the bigger the ship, the more the cost. Nor will you find the opposite. You won't necessarily pay less for the largest NCL ship vs the smallest. It will all depend on the specific itinerary. To get a sense of pricing, please use our widget below.

Now on to sizing. To find your specific NCL ship, feel free to use our menu below. Clicking on any will let you quickly jump to that ship's stats.

First, a little clarification is needed before viewing our sizing chart. We're measuring Norwegian ships size using the metric, "Gross Tonnage." This always causes a bit of confusion amongst our community members. It's not simply "weight" that determines this size measurement. The definition is technical and boring, but we'll provide it anyway.

Are you still awake? Good. So why do we use this measurement to determine Norwegian Ships Size? As noted above, it's used for safety rules and whatnot. As such, it's the standard across this cruise line and all others. Every passenger cruise ship will have this measurement . That makes it easy to compare ship size across ship, class, line and more.

Additionally, you'll find a number of other stats in our ship list. These include ship length, beam, draft, passenger count, and a few others.

Ok, we're done with today's maritime measurement course. Here's the good stuff.

In comparison, Norwegian Cruise Line appeals to a wide range of age groups, with an average age of passengers in the 40s. With a variety of onboard activities, dining options, and entertainment choices, Norwegian offers a vibrant and diverse cruising experience for all ages.

Other Factors Impacting Demographics

Ship size and itineraries.

Aside from the average age of passengers, there are several other factors that can impact the demographics of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) passengers. One significant factor is the size of the ship and the itineraries offered.

NCL operates a diverse fleet of ships, ranging from smaller, more intimate vessels to larger, resort-style ships. The size of the ship can attract different types of travelers, with smaller ships often appealing to older, more affluent passengers seeking a more relaxed and luxurious experience, while larger ships may attract families, couples, and younger travelers looking for a wide range of onboard activities and entertainment options.

Additionally, the itineraries offered by NCL play a role in shaping the demographics of its passengers. NCL offers cruises to a variety of destinations around the world, including popular Caribbean and Mediterranean routes, as well as more exotic destinations like Alaska, Hawaii, and the Norwegian fjords.

The choice of itinerary can attract different age groups and interests. For example, cruises to Alaska may attract older passengers who are drawn to the natural beauty and wildlife, while Mediterranean cruises may appeal to a wider range of age groups due to the rich history and cultural experiences offered.

Seasonality

Another factor that can impact the demographics of NCL passengers is seasonality. The time of year and the specific season can influence the age groups and types of travelers on board. For example, during school vacation periods such as summer and winter breaks, families with children are more likely to be cruising, leading to a younger demographic on board.

On the other hand, during off-peak seasons or during the school year, the passenger demographic may skew towards older adults and retirees.

It is important to note that while these factors can play a role in shaping the demographics of Norwegian Cruise Line passengers, they are not the sole determinants. The cruise industry is diverse and attracts a wide range of travelers, each with their own preferences and interests.

Therefore, it is essential to consider these factors alongside other variables such as marketing strategies, pricing, and overall customer satisfaction in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the demographics on board NCL ships.

In summary, Norwegian Cruise Line attracts a younger demographic compared to other mainstream cruise operators, with the average age of its passengers being 37. Key factors that appeal to younger cruisers and families include NCL’s casual ambiance, family friendly amenities, innovative new ships, and value pricing.

As Norwegian continues expanding its fleet with cutting-edge vessels full of excitement and activities for all ages, they are likely to keep courting the next generation of cruisers.

The 10 Best Cruise Lines for Adults, According to a Kid-Free Cruiser

A kids-free zone.

Author image: about face matte fluid eye paint review chelsea candelario

Even though I’ve noticed a trend in the cruise industry leaning towards more family-friendly fleets (I’m looking at you, Royal Caribbean ), a lot of us still see the perks of a kid-free vacation. And while many (if not all) cruises have dedicated spaces for adults on board, sometimes you don’t want to be pigeon-holed into one area for the entirety of your trip in order to get some peace and quiet. So, I went on the hunt to find the best cruise lines for adults, so you can relax and have fun with the 21-and-over crowd.

Oceania cruises, how i chose the best cruise lines for adults.

I’ve been on seven cruises since 2018, including Princess, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. I have firsthand experience on each cruise line’s amenities, food, entertainment and more. I also spent time researching all the cruise lines on this list (especially the ones I’ve never been on) and did a deep dive to find out key destinations, ship information and star perks aboard their vessels. I even took it a step further and checked out reviews straight from the people—i.e., on places like Reddit, TikTok and travel blogs.

1. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages came on the scene in 2021 and promised to create a cruise line for adults. In four years, it launched three ships: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady and gave guests full access to all its amenities. Per their website, the cruise line strives to let passengers try out over 20 eateries, participate in unlimited group fitness classes, enjoy free Wi-Fi and check live entertainment at an affordable price.

Speaking of entertainment, the cruise line takes it up a notch with their theme nights like PJ Party (aka a cool pajama party) and We Fancy (dress code: elegant), along with epic dance parties like Heartbeat inspired by Brooklyn’s own House of Yes , performances like Duel Reality which tells a modern interpretation of Romeo & Juliet and immersive experiences to get you involved in the show. Let’s not forget other fun activities to surely make a vacation a memorable one: ala private karaoke booths, casinos and a multi-story nightclub.

Viking Cruises

If you’re searching for a cruise line for adults, Viking should be on the top of your list. The cruise line is best known for their ocean, river and expedition cruises for adults 18 and over. According to  their website , “All guests must be 18 years old on or before the day they are scheduled to embark on their cruise; we do not maintain facilities or services on board for younger individuals.” Since 2000, Viking has always made it their mission to target older travelers, more specifically those over 55 to join their ships, so don’t expect to see any kiddos running around.

Viking currently has over 60 ships in their fleet that travel all around the world. You can take an iconic Western Mediterranean trip (Barcelona to Rome), a Grand  European  tour (Budapest to Amsterdam) or a Great Lakes voyage (Toronto to Minnesota). While many of the ships feature pools, restaurants, a library room and theater, most travelers go for the thrilling excursions and even participate in lectures specifically found on the expedition ships (Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris) that are great for the curious scientist or animal lover.

  • Best for:  adventure seekers
  • Popular Destinations:  Rome, Athens, Sydney, Vancouver, Shanghai
  • Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, hair salon, shops, bars, spa, pools

3. Seabourn

This luxurious cruise line provides an intimate and personalized experience that will make you feel like you’re vacationing on a yacht. Per their website, their ships can carry between 264 and 600 guests at time (compared to Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas can hold over 5,000 passengers). As a result, the bookings are extremely popular and limited. (In fact, it appears that most of their summer dates are already sold out.) While the minimum age is 6 years old, the target audience is around 35 and older, according to  Travel Weekly.  So, whether you’re looking for a traditional cruise or an expedition, Seabourn offers trips all around the world for seven to 30 days at sea—which gives you ample time to enjoy a relaxing massage at their spa, try to win big at the casino or have a dip in the pool. All of their ships also include live entertainment, fine dining and an all-inclusive package.

  • Best for:  smaller crowds
  • Minimum Age:  6+
  • Popular Destinations:  Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Monte Carlo, Alaska

best cruise lines for adults a photo of inside of celebrity ship pool deck

4. Celebrity

While Celebrity allows travelers of all ages to board their ships, travel site  Sophisticated Travel  found that most passengers are between their 40s and 50s. As  one redditor commented , “[I] have cruised Celebrity a few times. They have a few amenities for kids, so there are [a] few kids. [However] if [there] were any kids they were not really noticeable. In our experience no waterslides/waterparks equal very few kids on board.” The cruise line has been around since the ‘90s and currently has 16 ships in its fleet, traveling to port stops  like  Key West, Florida  to Athens,  Greece . The best part is you can schedule a weekend getaway or a long holiday for the entire season.

The cruise line prides itself on its extensive food and beverage options, using world-renowned chef dishes in their specialty restaurants and a wide selection of cocktails at your disposal. Plus, fun entertainment and  nightlife events  exclusively for adults like the Undercover, which is an exhibition inspired by the 1920s, and the Jazz Joint that turns the ship’s signature club into a speakeasy. Plus, most ships feature the Solarium, a space only for adults to lounge around and explore the inside pool minus kids.

  • Best for:  entertainment
  • Minimum Age:  6 months
  • Popular Destinations:  Bahamas, Barcelona, Vancouver, Florence, St. Kitts & Nevis
  • Amenities:  globally inspired cuisines, fitness center, shops, bars, spa, pools, casino
  • Price Range:  $237 to $17,535 per person

best cruise lines for adults a photo of oceania cruise ship

5. Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises only has six ships, but it’s been around since the early aughts. They sail around the world with destinations to New Zealand, Asia, Africa and 130 other locations. In fact, Oceania offers some of the longest stays on this list. Sure, you can cruise for a weekend or seven days, but the cruise line also offers long durations like a 200 days vacation—departing from Miami, Florida and visiting Caribbean islands (St. Maarten, Barbados) and parts of Brazil before arriving to New York. The cruise line is also known for its culinary experiences and enrichment programs. They have a dedicated library room so you can read comfortably as you sail, as well as guest lectures to learn more about the destinations you’re visiting and classes to learn how the meals are prepared.

And if you’re wondering if the cruise line is ‘adult-enough,’  one Tripadvisor commenter  believes it a huge hit for the 50+ crowd: “I would not recommend it unless it’s a port intensive trip. There are no activities for kids. The average age on board is 60s and above. They have trivia, bingo [and] needlepoint (cooking classes and art classes are hard to get). The entertainment is usually a string quartet and maybe a magician if you’re lucky. I wouldn’t take my adult children in their 30s for fear of their boredom. I would try Disney or Celebrity.”

  • Best for:  world travelers
  • Popular Destinations:  Lisbon, Iceland, Tokyo, Montreal, New York
  • Amenities:  globally inspired cuisines, fitness center, bars, spa, pools
  • Price Range:  $799 to $62,999 per person

best cruise lines for adults norweigan cruise

6. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian cruise line.

I’ve personally been on three Norwegian cruises ( twice on Prima ) and found very few children on board. While there are many thrill-seeking amenities fit for the whole family, there are plenty of ways to stray away from the younger folks. I found Norwegian Prima’s guests skew a bit older based on their upscale aesthetic around the ship that looks straight out of the MOMA museum. I appreciate Norwegian for its freestyle experience, with specialty and complimentary dining options that provide items outside of your usual pizza and hot dog joint.

The Norwegian Prima is also home to one of largest spas I’ve ever seen at sea. There are two gigantic pools, a few sauna rooms and a large lounge area overlooking the ocean. I spent hours in there just taking in the quiet and calming ambience. Plus, the live productions of  Summer: The Donna Summer Musical  and tribute shows that honor the like of Michael Jackson or Adele are just some of the ways they cater towards millennials, Gen Xers and boomers. Most ships even have dedicated pubs and intimate bars that play classic music from the 60s to early ‘00s, too.

  • Best for:  freestyle dining
  • Popular Destinations:  Alaska, Hawaii, Mykonos, Florence, Iceland
  • Amenities:  restaurants, fitness center, bars, spa, pools, activities
  • Price Range:  $79 to $10,799 per person

A cruise line owned by Carnival (a popular family-friend cruise company), Holland America Line is possibly the oldest cruise line of the bunch. You can spend a day—or 53 days—sailing with each ship. According to  Reddit , cruisers have seen families and smaller children, but found the majority of guests were over 40.

best cruise lines for adults a photo inside of princess cruise pool deck

Editor's Pick

10. princess cruises, princess cruises.

I recently traveled with Princess Cruises, and I highly recommend it for adults who aren’t traveling with kids in mind. As mentioned, I’ve been on seven cruises, and this by far has been the least family-friendly cruise line—in a good way! Although there were some kids and teens, the ship was made of mostly older travelers. I was actually surprised by how much it catered to adults over kids. It didn’t have many thrilling amenities like waterslides or an expansive basketball court that usually draw the younger crowds, but there were plenty of things that made the ship thrilling and exciting for mature folks.

For instance, Spellbound, an interactive cocktail experience hat features magicians, an exclusive bar and experimental dishes. There’s also Love by Britto, a dining experience which is heart-themed (down to the utensils) and sets a romantic vibe for couples. Additionally, all Princess ships have many ways to unwind and have fun that cater toward adults, like including their spa, theaters and pool decks. In fact, their latest ship, the Sun Princess, also has the Sanctuary, a pool area set apart from the rest of the ship that’s strictly for adults, so you can lounge under the sun all day without interruption.

A cruise line for every type of traveler: How to choose the right one for you

norwegian cruise line by age

  • Cruise lines have their own identities and areas of focus, and some lend themselves more to certain vacation types than others.
  • Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line are solid options for families.
  • Aurora Expeditions, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises offer trips with a spirit of exploration at their core.

No matter what kind of vacation you're planning , there's likely a cruise for you.

Whether you want to spend your trip kayaking and scuba diving or prefer to lounge on a sun deck sipping a cocktail, cruise lines have a wide range of offerings. But not every line or ship is right for every passenger.

Cruise brands have their own identities and areas of focus, and some lend themselves more to certain vacation types than others (amenities can also vary from ship to ship within the same line). Here's what to know.

Best cruise line for families

▶ Royal Caribbean International ships have an array of onboard offerings for kids and adults. The line's most recent addition, Icon of the Seas , for example, has been billed as the ultimate family vacation .

The vessel – the largest cruise ship in the world – has an entire neighborhood designed for young families, a large water park and activities ranging from a FlowRider surf simulator to Crown's Edge, where guests can walk more than 150 feet above the ocean. The line's Bahamas private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, offers plenty of thrills and places to chill , too.

▶ Norwegian Cruise Line also offers a range of activities like free-fall dry slides, go-kart tracks, and high-caliber stage shows. Disney Cruise Line draws on a huge catalogue of stories to bring magic to life on the water, with character appearances, themed dining and special events like Marvel Day at Sea .

▶ Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises also cater to families, and Princess Cruises and Holland America Line are solid options for multigenerational travelers. Mainstream cruise lines generally have kids clubs that are included in the fare, as well.

Best cruise line for adventure and expeditions

Adventure seekers may want to consider expedition ships and lines that offer sailings to less common destinations such as Antarctica .

▶ Aurora Expeditions offers a range of activity-centric itineraries, including Zodiac boat outings, kayaking, snowshoeing and more. Celebrity Cruises, meanwhile, has a vessel designed  especially for the Galapagos Islands .

▶ Operators like HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) , Lindblad Expeditions and Silversea Cruises also offer trips with a spirit of exploration at their core.

Best cruise line for letting loose

▶ Virgin Voyages offers adults-only sailings and a unique onboard atmosphere with its immersive Scarlet Night celebration and innovative performances . There is also no main dining room or buffet, with a focus on a variety of different food and drinks instead.

▶ Guests can also find parties on other lines, such as Carnival . But the length of the sailing and the time of year play a role in a cruise's vibe. Spring break cruises, for instance, may be rowdier than times when school is in session.

▶ Parties can take different forms, too. Cunard Line , for example, hosts formal gala nights .

Best cruise for rest and relaxation

Upscale cruise lines can lend themselves to a more relaxed and pampering experience. Guests are less likely to encounter rock-climbing walls or ice-skating rinks but will find amenities like pools and carefully curated dining. The following operators are all in that category:

  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises
  • Oceania Cruises
  • The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

However, even on mainstream lines, guests can often get away from the bustle of the ship in onboard spas and adults-only areas. Luxe ship-within-a-ship concepts like Norwegian's The Haven or MSC's Yacht Club can also offer a more intimate, laid-back experience.

What should I pack for a cruise?: Here are 5 essential items to bring

Best lines for river cruising

River cruising tends to be small-scale and destination-focused.

▶ European river itineraries from lines like AmaWaterways, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Viking often stop at a mix of marquee and less-visited ports, so guests aren't fighting crowds the whole time.

▶ In the U.S., American Cruise Lines offers a diverse selection of itineraries, from sailings on the Columbia and Snake Rivers to round-trip cruises from Washington, D.C. Viking also has a ship purpose-built for the Mississippi River .

Spend hours relaxing however you please on one of the most gorgeous, uncrowded beaches on the neighboring island of Virgin Gorda. After a wonderfully scenic ferry ride across Sir Francis Drake Channel, you will arrive at Spring Bay National Park, which is rimmed by an idyllic stretch of sand strewn with huge boulders. Although the setting is practically identical to the more famous beach at The Baths, won’t be nearly as many people. Volcanic activity eons ago formed the boulders along the park’s white-sand beach and over time natural erosion smoothed and reshaped them. You might sit in a shallow pool between the boulders, climb around the huge rock formations and stroll along the sheltered shore. The sea is typically calm and crystal-clear, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Regardless of how you spend the time, you can’t help but leave thoroughly relaxed and refreshed.

• Ride the ferry across Sir Francis Drake Channel to the nearby island of Virgin Gorda. • Enjoy free time relaxing on the boulder-strewn beach at Spring Bay National Park. • Swim in the sea, lounge about the beach and do most anything else that pleases you.

HELPFUL HINTS

• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.
