ROYAL Caribbean's new Oasis of the Seas is the largest, widest, tallest, most expensive cruise ship afloat, a cornucopia of amusements aimed at quashing the notion that cruising is a sedentary vacation, chief executive Richard Fain said.

Then he donned swim trunks, jumped on a boogie board and challenged fellow executives to a contest in one of the Oasis ' two FlowRider pools that simulate surfing.

"I've never been a believer in building it big just for size's sake. We build large because we've had so many ideas they simply don't fit in a smaller hull," Fain said.

The $US1.4 ($1.5) billion Oasis of the Seas , the world's biggest cruise ship, enters service during the industry's worst year in decades but is so exuberantly excessive that Fain predicts it will be profitable from day one.

Oasis is a floating resort that eclipses the condo towers it sails past at its new home, Port Everglades in southeast Florida. The 225,282-gross-ton ship has 16 passenger decks and can carry 6292 passengers plus 2165 crew.

It has rock-climbing walls, a basketball court, an ice skating rink, a carousel with hand-carved wooden animals, a shopping promenade lined with cafes and bars, cantilevered whirlpools overlooking the sea and a Central Park with 12,000 live plants and trees.

An amphitheatre surrounds a deep-diving pool on the stern, where high-divers and synchronised swimmers perform. Passengers can harness themselves onto the "zip line" and soar across the ship above an open-air atrium nine decks high and lined with balconied cabins.

One of its many bars, the Rising Tide, floats up and down between three decks, while a touring company performs the Broadway musical "Hairspray" in the 1380-seat theatre.

The Oasis , which starts its inaugural voyage on December 5, was six years in the making and arrives at a time when cruise lines are cutting rates to fill berths.

Net yields, a measure of revenue generated per bed per day, were down 16 percent during the first nine months of 2009 for the major companies, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, Rod McLeod, a vacation management consultant who has held senior management posts at all three lines, said.

"Over the last 20 years, that's the steepest level of year-over-year declines in yields, which is understandable given what's happened in the worldwide economy," McLeod, now with McLeod/Applebaum Partners in Miami, said.

The cruise lines are cautiously predicting 2010 will be less awful, with yields down by only 7 or 8 percent.

Generally the farther ahead passengers book cruises, the more the lines can charge. The window has begun to widen, with passengers now booking an average of three months ahead, compared with just six weeks in early 2009, McLeod said.

Wave of new ships

But a wave of new ships ordered during the boom times are now coming on line and that will put pressure on rates, a boon for bargain-hunting passengers but not so much for cruise line earnings.

No. 1 cruise line Carnival's newest and biggest ship, the 3652-passenger Carnival Dream, starts regular cruises to the Caribbean in December out of Florida's Port Canaveral.

Royal Caribbean will launch the Oasis ' twin, Allure of the Seas, next December, one of eight new ships due out in 2010 industry-wide. Capacity is expected to rise by 7 percent next year, and a little less than that in 2011, before settling.

"No new ships have been ordered for now 20 months and that hasn't occurred in the last 25 years," McLeod said.

New ships tend to attract passengers at the expense of the older ones. Cruise lines are compensating by moving their older ships away from weakening markets like Hawaii and Alaska and into growing ones like Europe and China, "like a giant chess game, playing with boats," he said.

Bookings aboard Oasis have been strong because it offers so much of everything, Royal Caribbean's Fain said.

"We're getting much higher rates than I certainly would have expected even a year ago. The reception has just been overwhelming. I'm feeling pretty good right now," Fain said.

Mega-cruises are becoming copies of the great Las Vegas resorts

Barcelona has become the most important port in the world for cruise holiday tourism, apart from its original market, the Caribbean. This year, it has served as the base for some of the most modern mega-ships, like Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Sea, or the new flagship of the world's premier cruise ship operator, the Carnival Horizon. In this context, two studies by the Applied Economics & Management Research Group, based at the University of Seville, have analysed the main trends in this important tourist sector. These projects were financed, after a competitive process, by the Ministry of Economy and Competiveness. The authors of these projects were the researcher José Ignacio Manzano, Lourdes López-Valpuesta and Mercedes Castro-Nuño.

According to Castillo, "our estimates, from the feedback of 105,000 cruise passengers, show that the gigantic size of the ships is creating a new experience, but also that this mass experience is less satisfactory than that on traditional cruise ships."

For the researcher, the productive improvements and innovations in the shipyards, which have made the mega ships possible, have made the cruise ship operators look for a leisure model that fills the abundant space that these new floating cities offer. In many of these ships, the classic model of luxury ("like the false first class of the Titanic") has been abandoned to copy, with great precision, the theme parks of the great casino resorts of Las Vegas. For this reason, according to Castro-Nuño, the majority of the cruise ship operators no longer focus on the traditional cruise ship market of pensioners with high incomes, and honeymoon couples, but instead are trying to attract mass middle-class family tourism.

According to Lopez-Valpuesta, the mega cruise ships have many similarities with the resorts of Las Vegas, beyond just having casinos: the traditional formal dress code has been abandoned for something clearly informal, even on cruises run by premium operators; the ships have greatly expanded the shopping possibilities available, and, even more so, the gastronomic possibilities, with the cruise operators now competing with the casino resorts to offer the most spectacular buffets; tourists enjoy similar shows, from those in the style of Cirque du Soleil to the same magicians and singers, as well as great water-related entertainment facilities, from swimming pools, to replicas of the famous fountains of Las Vegas's Hotel Bellagio on the high sea. For this reason, both models of tourism share the same business model, based, after a process of business concentration, on an oligopoly, where a few businesses, with a dynamic pricing system, which changes greatly according to the time of booking, offer very aggressive prices. In doing this, they look to maximise occupation of the great resorts/ships, so that they that can then try and get their guests to spend as much money as possible in the facilities due to the fact that they are captive, whether that be because of the daily high temperatures of Las Vegas or because of the sea in the case of the cruise ships. For these reasons, it should not be a surprise that the same corporations, like Apollo Global Management and the Genting Group own some of the main Las Vegas resorts and cruise ship operators.

In addition, for Castillo, the unstoppable expansion of this sector, with close to 28 million tourists/cruise passengers in 2017, makes him think more deeply, as cruises have broken with the axiom of the tourist sector that the majority of positive economic impact are produced in the destination visited. Even the traditionally reviled "All Included" beach resorts generate almost all their employment in the destination where they are situated, from workers to providers, and they contribute to the maintenance of the welfare state with the taxes raised. In contrast, cruises, independently of where they dock, generally only have a marginal relationship with local providers, and direct employment is usually concentrated in the countries of South-East Asia, from where a significant part of their crews come. The positive impact is reduced, except for in the port of embarkation or disembarkation, for example Barcelona, in the form of shore trips. Though even the money spent here is impacted upon by the shops and restaurants available on the mega cruise ships.

Whatever happens, according to Castillo, no tourist destination can afford to remain outside this area of expansion, although it is necessary to find a way to increase the social and economic benefits for the destination.

How Do Cruise Ships Float?

Hint: Magic has nothing to do with it.

Not everything that's heavy sinks right to the bottom of the ocean floor, and there's no greater proof than Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship on Earth.

The world's largest cruise ship boasts 21 restaurants, 14 bars, three water slides, a mini golf course, and more, all contributing to the 236,857 tons it weighs. And that's without the 7,000 passengers it can hold.

We know that giant ocean liners don't sink, even with their rock climbing walls, nightclubs, and full-blown waterparks. But have you ever wondered why?

It's not magic or flying unicorns that keep the Wonder of the Seas plying the open waters. It's all about buoyancy: the power of a liquid to keep things afloat.

Colossal vessels stay above water by displacing an amount of water equal to their mass (the wide, U-shaped hull helps with this). As the ship moves forward and pushes water away, the water is ceaselessly trying to return to fill the space, with an energy that forces the ship upward.

And it's not just about total weight. A solid bar of steel dropped from a cruise ship balcony will undoubtedly sink until it reaches the bottom of the sea. But a boat actually has a lot of open space. No matter how many restaurants, bars, swimming pools, and casinos they cram into these floating cities, there's still an awful lot of empty volume.

Engineers are careful to keep the average density of a ship (considering both the physical weight of the vessel as well as all the air) less than the average density of the water. After all, the ocean is massive — and extremely dense. To the seas, a cruise ship is nothing more than a leaf drifting effortlessly along the surface.

So don't spend any time stressing about this one. Your ship is an engineering (and entertainment) marvel. Just sit back and enjoy the cruise .

A year has passed since I first sailed on Royal Caribbean's massive Wonder of the Seas .

Since then, I've been on two luxurious cruise ships with fares and amenities that could shock Royal Caribbean's regulars.

But these shiny new floating resorts' complimentary champagne and luxurious suites weren't enough to topple the Wonder of the Seas from its top spot on my " best cruises" list .

That's because Royal Caribbean's mega cruise ship had one standout feature I've yet to see on another vessel: the Boardwalk.

At 235,600 gross tons, the Wonder of the Seas has held onto its title of the world’s largest cruise ship since its debut in 2022.

This 18-deck floating resort has a seemingly endless list of amenities throughout its eight "neighborhoods," a term Royal Caribbean uses to describe the different sections of its ships.

Walking around the 1,188-foot-long vessel can feel like an overwhelming task.

I would know — I spent two nights on the vessel in December 2022 during a sailing for journalists and travel agents.

And it was a stark contrast to the adults-only Solarium section of the vessel.

At its size, I needed well over two nights to explore everything it had to offer.

The Wonder of the Seas felt more like a massive amusement park than a typical cruise liner.

Like any cruise ship, there was a buffet, atrium, and pool deck.

But the vessel sets itself apart from any competitors with its nontraditional neighborhoods.

The most impressive of these, and now my favorite, was the Boardwalk.

If you’re wondering what the Boardwalk looks like, just turn to its name.

Like the boardwalks I spent my afternoons at, this neighborhood was lined with various inoffensive American dining options.

The hot dog stand, anchored with a bright neon sign and giant mustard statue, looked like a retro beachside food spot.

Next door, the candy and ice cream store was bespeckled with colorful lit-up decor, just like the irresistible sweets shops of my childhood (except this time, I had no accompanying parent to drag in).

There was even a recognizable Johnny Rockets serving up classic burgers and fries, although dining here comes at an additional cost.

Like the iconic burger restaurant, travelers also have to pay extra for a plate of chicken tenders at Playmakers sports bar across the "street."

Here, children can play at the small arcade while their parents catch the latest game over a platter of chicken wings and a cold beer.

It wouldn’t be a true boardwalk without fun activities for children.

For agile youngsters, there was also a wall with suspended climbing platforms and nets, shown above.

Towards the end of the Boardwalk, two large rock climbing walls frame the Aqua Theater.

More experienced climbers could instead traverse the tall rock-climbing walls.

At night, travelers flocked to this open-aired theater to catch a showing of “inTENse.”

Instead of singers and musicians, the fast-paced “inTENse” had divers, dancers, synchronized swimmers, and even a tightrope walker.

The performers bounced between two stage platforms that rose and sank into the pool, the first I've seen on a ship.

It's one of the few times I didn't want to leave halfway through a cruise show.

But even during the day, all of Boardwalk’s amenities kept me coming back.

I'm not the target demographic for a carousel or ice cream shop.

But I'm sure other adults could relate to the nostalgic feeling I got while walking around this neighborhood.

Royal Caribbean struck a delicate balance with the Boardwalk.

While the pool deck was overwhelmingly colorful and loud, the Central Park neighborhood was too quiet and passive.

I found the Boardwalk to be somewhere in the middle: fun and energetic without feeling draining.

In theory, it’s just copying a concept that already exists.

But I've never seen it on a floating resort, nor would I have expected it to feel so similar to its on-land counterpart.

The buzzing energy I remember from boardwalks of my childhood was exactly what I felt when I walked around the Wonder of the Seas' interpretation.

But to some travelers, the unembellished staterooms could make the hotel rooms at sea feel like a tranquil escape from the bustle of the ship.

This space was designed to accommodate more guests than you might expect: The ship can host more than 9,288 people, including crew.

But if you have plans to travel on the Wonder of the Seas in 2024, you could see more travelers than that — more cruises are expected to sail at an occupancy rate of more than 100% in 2024.

But here, there are food options like snacks, an all-day brunch, a buffet …

It’s undoubtedly a massive ship. But in just two months, the vessel will lose its title of the world’s largest.

In late January 2023, Royal Caribbean's larger Icon of the Seas will overtake the Wonder of the Seas' title.

While the upcoming Icon won't have a Boardwalk, Royal Caribbean's renderings of its Surfside neighborhood show it could be an acceptable substitute.

We'll have to wait another two months to see if that's the case.

This year, it has served as the base for some of the most modern mega-ships, like Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Sea, or the new flagship of the world's premier cruise ship operator, the Carnival Horizon. In this context, two studies by the Applied Economics & Management Research Group, based at the University of Seville, have analysed the main trends in this important tourist sector. The authors of these projects were the José Ignacio Manzano, Lourdes López-Valpuesta and Mercedes Castro-Nuño.

Castillo says, "our estimates, from the feedback of 105,000 cruise passengers, show that the gigantic size of the ships is creating a new experience, but also that this mass experience is less satisfactory than that on traditional cruise ships."

According to the researcher, the productive improvements and innovations in the shipyards, which have made the mega-ships possible, have made the cruise ship operators look for a leisure model suited to the abundant space that these new floating cities offer. In many of these ships, the classic model of luxury ("like the false first class of the Titanic") has been abandoned to copy, with great precision, the theme parks of the great casino resorts of Las Vegas. For this reason, according to Castro-Nuño, the majority of the cruise ship operators no longer focus on the traditional cruise ship market of pensioners with high incomes and honeymoon couples, but instead are trying to attract mass middle-class family tourism.

According to Lopez-Valpuesta, the mega cruise ships have many similarities with the resorts of Las Vegas, beyond just having casinos: The traditional formal dress code has been abandoned for something clearly informal, even on cruises run by premium operators; the ships have greatly expanded the shopping possibilities available, and, to an even greater extent, the gastronomic possibilities, with the cruise operators now competing with the casino resorts to offer the most spectacular buffets.

Tourists enjoy shows in the style of Cirque du Soleil and the same magicians and singers, as well as great water-related entertainment facilities, from swimming pools, to replicas of the famous fountains of Las Vegas's Hotel Bellagio on the high sea. For this reason, both models of tourism share the same business model, based, after a process of business concentration, on an oligopoly, in which a few businesses offer very aggressive prices with a dynamic pricing system that changes greatly according to the time of booking. Both models look to maximise occupation of the great resorts/ships, so that they that can then try and get their guests to spend as much money as possible in the facilities as a captive audience, whether due to the daily high temperatures of Las Vegas, or because of the sea in the case of the cruise ships. For these reasons, it should not be a surprise that the same corporations, like Apollo Global Management and the Genting Group own some of the main Las Vegas resorts and cruise ship operators.

Castillo considers the unstoppable expansion of this sector, with close to 28 million tourists/cruise passengers in 2017; cruises have broken with the axiom of the tourist sector that the majority of positive economic impact is produced in the destination visited. Even the traditionally reviled "all inclusive" beach resorts generate almost all their employment in the destination where they are situated, from workers to providers, and they contribute to the maintenance of the welfare state with the taxes raised.

In contrast, cruises, independently of where they dock, generally have a marginal relationship with local providers, and direct employment is usually concentrated in the countries of Southeast Asia, where a significant part of their crews originate. The positive impact is reduced, except at the port of embarkation or disembarkation for shore trips, though even the money spent here is impacted upon by the shops and restaurants available on the mega cruise ships.

World’s biggest cruise ship is a floating resort

Royal Caribbean's new Oasis of the Seas is the largest, widest, tallest, most expensive cruise ship afloat, a cornucopia of amusements aimed at quashing the notion that cruising is a sedentary vacation, said chief executive Richard Fain.

Then he donned swim trunks, jumped on a boogie board and challenged fellow executives to a contest in one of the Oasis' two FlowRider pools that simulate surfing.

"I've never been a believer in building it big just for size's sake. We build large because we've had so many ideas they simply don't fit in a smaller hull," Fain said.

The $1.4 billion Oasis of the Seas, the world's biggest cruise ship, enters service during the industry's worst year in decades but is so exuberantly excessive that Fain predicts it will be profitable from day one.

Zip line An amphitheater surrounds a deep-diving pool on the stern, where high-divers and synchronized swimmers perform. Passengers can harness themselves onto the "zip line" and soar across the ship above an open-air atrium nine decks high and lined with balconied cabins.

One of its many bars, the Rising Tide, floats up and down between three decks, while a touring company performs the Broadway musical "Hairspray" in the 1,380-seat theater.

The Oasis, which starts its inaugural voyage on December 5, was six years in the making and arrives at a time when cruise lines are cutting rates to fill berths.

Net yields, a measure of revenue generated per bed per day, were down 16 percent during the first nine months of 2009 for the major companies, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, said Rod McLeod, a vacation management consultant who has held senior management posts at all three lines.

"Over the last 20 years, that's the steepest level of year-over-year declines in yields, which is understandable given what's happened in the worldwide economy," said McLeod, now with McLeod/Applebaum Partners in Miami.

The cruise lines are cautiously predicting 2010 will be less awful, with yields down by only 7 or 8 percent.

Wave of new ships But a wave of new ships ordered during the boom times are now coming on line and that will put pressure on rates, a boon for bargain-hunting passengers but not so much for cruise line earnings.

No. 1 cruise line Carnival's newest and biggest ship, the 3,652-passenger Carnival Dream, starts regular cruises to the Caribbean in December out of Florida's Port Canaveral.

Royal Caribbean will launch the Oasis' twin, Allure of the Seas, next December, one of eight new ships due out in 2010 industrywide. Capacity is expected to rise by 7 percent next year, and a little less than that in 2011, before settling.

"No new ships have been ordered for now 20 months and that hasn't occurred in the last 25 years," McLeod said.

Bookings aboard Oasis have been strong because it offers so much of everything, Royal Caribbean's Fain said.

Seven-night cruises start at $1,049 per person, double occupancy, for an inside cabin and run up to $16,659 per person for the two-story Royal Loft suite, which includes a baby grand piano and private 843-square foot balcony.

"We're getting much higher rates than I certainly would have expected even a year ago. The reception has just been overwhelming. I'm feeling pretty good right now," Fain said.

Zamboni driver needed Royal Caribbean will see some cost savings from economies of scale on Oasis. Fuel consumption per guest is 30 percent lower than on an average ship and engine room staffing, for example, is not significantly bigger than on other ships because that part of the Oasis is very compact, Fain said.

Other costs are higher because it takes more staff to run its 24 dining venues and service 4,100 toilets, 42 elevators and 4,500 air conditioning units.

"On another ship we don't have high divers and horticulturists, Zamboni operators," Fain said, referring to equipment used to groom ice-skating rinks.

Oasis' size limits its itinerary. It will stop initially at the Caribbean ports of St. Maarten and St. Thomas and the Bahamian capital of Nassau, a week-long voyage that will later alternate with western Caribbean sailings.

Those ports dredged and deepened their approaches and built new docks to accommodate Oasis, while Port Everglades built a whole new terminal to handle the crowd of passengers who will leave the ship as a new horde embarks.

The mega-ship has its detractors. Travel writer Arthur Frommer wrote in his Budget Travel column that it exists to "cater to more of those people who are unable to entertain themselves, those arrested personalities who rely on constant, massive, outside distractions to ward off depression."

An even bigger one? Other lines are cheering the Oasis, figuring the publicity bonanza will lift all cruise ships. Boutique lines are pitching their smaller more intimate vessels as the anti-Oasis.

"Yes they have the most space but they're also putting the most number of guests into that space," said Steve Tucker, vice president of North American field sales for privately held luxury line Silversea, which launches its all-suite Silver Spirit on a 91-day voyage from Port Everglades in December.

At a tenth the size of the Oasis, Silver Spirit offers a private butler in every stateroom and carries 540 passengers.

Fain, meanwhile, is "looking at the forward bookings and smiling" while fending off the inevitable question of whether Royal Caribbean will build a ship even bigger than Oasis.

"I'm not saying it couldn't happen but one would need a reason," he said. "If somebody comes up with an idea that we think would be appealing to our guests, we would certainly look at it."

The competition for new entertainment attractions continues to escalate with larger water parks, and even the first roller coaster built on a ship, Carnival’s Mardi Gras. Each cruise line seeks to create its own unique attraction to set it apart from its competition. Norwegian has its 300-meter go kart track while Royal Caribbean has it FlowRider, zip-lines and water slides.

Luxury & Expedition Market Grows

As more of the Baby Boomers and Gen X move up to the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise lines, the demand for newer ships designed to reflect this generation’s preference for sophisticated and casual cruising has grown significantly. Each cruise line has embarked on a building spree of new ships to meet this demand.

One the the biggest growth areas has been the expedition cruise niche. These ships hold 250 or less passengers and take them to more remote and exotic destinations. The port stops are more active and even vigorous with the emphasis being on learning, understand and experiencing each stop. In the Arctic you will use Zodiacs to reach colony of penguins. In the Galapagos Islands you’ll walk the trails that Charles Darwin followed as he developed his theory of evolution. In the north, you can now traverse the northern passage which had been impassable until recently. These cruises are about enrichment and adventure, but offered on a luxurious and casual ship.

Like any market, cruise lines are affected by changes in demographics. As Millennials become the largest segment in the US market (overtaking Baby Boomers in 2019) Mass Market/Contemporary lines need to adjust to attract this newer generation to cruising. Part of the effort is evident in changes in how these lines market their brand, other parts focus on building more activities and entertainment onboard as well as increasing the variety of dining and bar venues.

These lines are offering more 3 and 4-day cruises designed to give Millennials a chance to experience cruising at an attractive price in the hopes of building a lifetime customer. Virgin Voyages is a new cruise line built entirely around a Millennial aesthetic with its Squid Ink Tattoo Studio and the option to have a Drag Lunch with the resident drag queen.

Celebrity Cruises is making the most aggressive changes in the premium cruise lines category (Celebrity, Holland America & Princess) to attract Millennials with its Edge Class ships. Celebrity will retain its Solstice Class ships which will are hugely appealing to Baby Boomers, while being able to attract newer Millennials guests with the Edge Class ships. In the luxury and ultra-luxury category, the lines are changing their ships to reflect the sensibilities of BabyBoomers & GenX after decades of catering primarily to members of the Silent Generation. Changes included a slow but clear shift to less formality and rigidness – open dining, less or no formal nights, and a more relaxed sophisticated atmosphere versus the over-the-top opulence of the past.

Cruise lines are taking significant steps to minimize their impact on the environment. This ranges from massive recycling efforts to smaller steps like minimizing or eliminating the use of single use plastic bottles and straws. The new Celebrity Edge has eliminated disposable water bottles. Some lines have committed to re-purpose 100% of waste generated onboard through reducing, reusing, donating, recycling or converting waste into energy. Several lines are introducing LNG powered ships which will greatly reduce air pollution in ports and on the seas.

Personal Technology

Cruise lines are introducing a wide variety of new technology to enhance the boarding and onboard experience. Royal Caribbean is rolling out technology that can get you through check-in and onboard in 10 minutes.

Once onboard Celebrity lets you use your smartphone to unlock your stateroom door, turn on and off the lights, open and close the curtains, and adjust your thermostat on Edge Class ships. Smartphones can be used on some ships to book specialty dinner reservations and even book shore excursions. MSC cruises has created a digital assistant, Zoe, who will help guests with questions.

As we have more connected electronics, cruise lines are adding more power plugs and even USB ports to make life easier.

While the Silent Generation brought us modern cruising with its more rigid scheduling, formal dress, and flair for the elegant, there is now a steady and unstoppable trend to a more casual cruise experience. Across the board, from mass market to ultra-luxury cruise lines, the undeniable trend is to either relax once rigid dress codes with their formal nights or outright eliminate them. Even with those cruise lines which still have formal nights, the trend is to offer options for those who don’t want to participate. The majority of lines have embraced the sensibilities of today’s cruise passengers’ preference for a more casual cruise experience.

As part of this preference, more cruise lines are embracing open dining. Some cruise lines only offer open dining while others allow guests to choose fixed or open dining.

Even the design of the ships interior and its atmosphere is changing toward a more sophisticated concept which generally eschews the opulent and over the top design of early ships. There is grandeur and glamour, but it is more understated and less in your face.

As the cruise industry changes, it offers opportunities for for new and experienced cruisers. The move to offer a variety of short cruises of 3 to 4 days gives business families the chance to experience the joy of cruising.

The growth of the luxury and expedition markets give experienced cruisers new and exciting ports that they’ve not experience before.

The global popularity of cruise holidays grows in parallel with the size of the ships, and so does the magnitude of their impact on the environment, the social equity, and the local economy. The sustainability of cruise ships has increasingly been in the eye of the media and the society, thus putting pressure on the industry. Indeed, cruise line companies are demonstrating more effort in reducing their environmental footprint in the last decade. However, many of them are limited to meeting international regulations, which is a reactive rather than a proactive approach to ensuring the sustainability of the industry in the long run. The lack of commonly accepted and operationalized sustainability criteria for assessing the social and economic impacts of cruise ships has resulted in loosely defined actions in these aspects. The goal of this chapter is to provide an overview of the environmental, social, and economic challenges associated with cruise ships’ sustainability, discuss how they are tackled by the industry nowadays, and offer guidance on how to address them through the adoption of innovative sustainable business practices, backed with commitment, collaboration, and transparency.
