After several calls, holds and voicemails to company, they advised to meet at Starbucks and vouchers would be handled there. Once we finally met guides, they didn’t have our tickets to museum or One World (which we added to package on TripAdvisor) after going back and forth, we were sent off with our guide and told we would have tickets emailed to us. Although Sam was knowledgeable about the city, it wasn’t what we paid for or expected. It was a filler, and the streets were much too hot, muggy and noisy to hear him. After a short visit to ground zero, we were on our own for the memorial museum and One World Observatory. (Tickets finally arrived on email) If you can’t get on one of the more reputable tours, I would suggest purchasing the One World Observatory and 9/11 Museum separately. At Ground Zero they offer on your own headsets, we didn’t do this, we were over the heat and ready to go inside. At OWO you can purchase a preferred ticket, this will supply you with a virtual tour as you stroll above the beautiful sites of NYC. (Or $15 extra with reg ticket) These views were amazing and a must see. The preferred ticket also helps you avoid the long exit line depending on time of day. 9/11 Museum - WOW! What a moving experience. We rented the self guided tour/headphones narrated by Di Nero (worth the $10) we were overcome with emotion - the devastation of that day, the photos, recordings and exhibits displayed will stay with me forever. Be sure to enter the 2nd half of the narrated tour (on a different screen of the self tour) this is all done at your own pace. NYC DOT unveils more than 130 initial locations for 2024 Open Streets, with more to come throughout the year

Car-Free Earth Day programming to include live music, arts and culture experiences, fitness and health activities, environmental educational panels, and free One-Day Passes with Citi Bike citywide

NEW YORK – New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez today announced the launch of the Open Streets season with more than 130 initial Open Streets to come online this spring, as well as programing details for this year’s annual Open Streets: Car Free Earth Day (CFED) on Saturday, April 20, which features 53 car-free streets and plazas throughout the five boroughs — the largest CFED event to date. Presented by WABC, this year's CFED connects Open Streets and plazas while providing access to over 1,000 miles of NYC's Bike Network, with each location showcasing public art or community programming—a significant increase from the 30 locations featured in the 2023 event. Additionally, NYC DOT will extend car-free operations by one hour, running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"This year's monumental Car-Free Earth Day celebration will feature an array of exciting programming, music, and activities across numerous car-free streets throughout New York City," said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. "Our largest Open Street activation in New York City’s history should be a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to combat climate change and to our fellow New Yorkers as we work together to minimize our carbon footprint so that we can pave the way for a brighter future for our planet and future generations."

Car-Free Earth Day makes select city streets car-free and promotes activism and education surrounding climate change, environmentalism, and sustainable modes of transportation. The event also marks the official start of the city’s Open Streets and Public Space Programming season, with the launch of Open Street locations across the city. This year, NYC DOT is beginning the Open Streets season with 132 initial locations, including two dozen new locations. New locations include Audubon Avenue, in Manhattan; Decatur Avenue, in the Bronx; 62nd Street, in Queens; and Bristol Street, in Brooklyn. A full list of initial Open Street locations can be found on the NYC DOT website , with more locations to be announced this summer.

Through NYC DOT’s commitment to equity, the agency has allocated $30 million in expanded resources to support public spaces like plazas and Open Streets in underserved communities. As part of that commitment, nearly half of 2024 Open Streets—41 percent—are located in areas with the greatest need.

Car-Free Earth Day Featured Programming

• At Times Square Plaza in Manhattan NYC DOT will be partnering with Shared Studios to host an educational activation aiming to engage activists, educators, city planners, and transportation leaders from around the world in discussions on climate change, sustainability, and community building for more sustainable cities. The portal features 90-minute sessions with other cities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. discussing sanitation, global Open Street efforts, sustainable development, and equity.
• Herald Square Plaza in Manhattan will showcase Indian cultural art, Chinese cultural activities, flower crown making, emergency light crafting, street tape art, and live music performances.
• St. Nicholas Avenue in Manhattan will come alive with live performances by Rubio del Acordeón, featuring merengue concerts and music ranging from DJ sets to R&B bands. Activities include accordion and tambourine classes, skateboarding, rollerblading, outdoor volleyball, soccer, rock climbing, and chess.
• In Midtown Manhattan, visitors can enjoy the EcoHarmony art installation by Natalie Colette Wood, and the Kelp Parade art installation and activation by Amanda Thackray and Wendell Jeffrey, join a spin bike activation, attend a learn-to-ride bike class for kids, take part in a screen printmaking workshop, and witness live mural painting. EcoHarmony will be at 38th St and Broadway and the Kelp Parade will depart Broadway and 22nd Street at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
• At Flatiron Plaza and Shared Streets, attendees can engage in an interactive climate change experience with Space to the People, learn about cycling education, groove to live jazz and swing music, and participate in dance classes.
• Union Square Plaza in Manhattan will host park advocacy with New Yorkers for Parks, sustainability programming, and pedestrian and public transportation advocacy with Transportation Alternatives, along with various arts and crafts activities.
• Dyckman Street in Manhattan will offer helmet fittings, a rock-climbing wall, pet fostering and adoption with The Good Life Dog Rescue, face painting, and youth programming.
• E 188th Street in the Bronx, will feature a rock-climbing wall, rollerblading, biking, balloon sculptures, outdoor volleyball, batting cages, and other youth activities, along with live DJ sets and performances ranging from salsa to African music.
• Woodside Avenue Open Street in Queens will host a Chinese calligraphy workshop, henna and arts and crafts by Save the People, classical guitar activations, fitness classes, Afro-Caribbean Dance workshops, painting sessions, tai-chi sessions, and performances by live DJs, Afro Jazz bands, Indian Dance Groups, and Colombian bands.
• On 5th Avenue in Brooklyn, visitors can enjoy interactive pop-ups, climate activities, rock climbing walls, bead making, and live performances spanning rock, jazz, and mariachi music.
• Port Richmond Avenue on Staten Island will feature environmental and garden activations, bee interactions, book trucks for reading, watercolor painting, rock climbing walls, Native American music, Zumba classes, performances by mariachi bands, live DJs, jazz bands, and African dance groups.

For decades, Israel and Iran have fought a shadow war across the Middle East , trading attacks by land, sea, air and in cyberspace. The barrage of drones and missiles Iran launched at Israel on Saturday — though nearly all were shot down or intercepted — represented a watershed in the conflict.

It was the first time that Iran directly attacked Israel from its own territory, according to Ahron Bregman, a political scientist and expert in Middle East security issues at King’s College in London, who called it a “historic event.”

Iran has largely used foreign proxies such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia to strike Israeli interests, while targeted assassinations of Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists have been a key part of Israel’s strategy. Here is a recent history of the conflict:

August 2019: An Israeli airstrike killed two Iranian-trained militants in Syria, a drone set off a blast near a Hezbollah office in Lebanon and an airstrike in Qaim, Iraq, killed a commander of an Iran-backed Iraqi militia. Israel accused Iran at the time of trying to establish an overland arms-supply line through Iraq and northern Syria to Lebanon, and analysts said the strikes were aimed at stopping Iran and signaling to its proxies that Israel would not tolerate a fleet of smart missiles on its borders.

January 2020: Israel greeted with satisfaction the assassination of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani , the commander of the foreign-facing arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, in an American drone strike in Baghdad.

Iran hit back by attacking two bases in Iraq that housed American troops with a barrage of missiles, wounding about 100 U.S. military personnel .

2021-22: In July 2021, an oil tanker managed by an Israeli-owned shipping company was attacked off the coast of Oman, killing two crew members, according to the company and three Israeli officials. Two of the officials said that the attack appeared to have been carried out by Iranian drones.

Iran did not explicitly claim or deny responsibility, but a state-owned television channel described the episode as a response to an Israeli strike in Syria.

In November 2021, Israel killed Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh , and followed up with the assassination of a Revolutionary Guards commander, Col. Sayad Khodayee , in May 2022.

December 2023: After Israel’s bombardment of Gaza began in response to the Oct. 7 Hamas-led assault, Iranian-backed militias stepped up their own attacks . And late last year, Iran accused Israel of killing a high-level military figure, Brig. Gen. Sayyed Razi Mousavi , in a missile strike in Syria.

A senior adviser to the Revolutionary Guards, General Mousavi was described as having been a close associate of General Suleimani and was said to have helped oversee the shipment of arms to Hezbollah. Israel, adopting its customary stance, declined to comment directly on whether it was behind General Mousavi’s death.

January 2024: An explosion in a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, killed Saleh al-Arouri , a Hamas leader, along with two commanders from that group’s armed wing, the first assassination of a top Hamas official outside the West Bank and Gaza in recent years. Officials from Hamas, Lebanon and the United States ascribed the blast to Israel , which did not publicly confirm involvement.

Hezbollah, which receives major support from Iran, stepped up its assaults on Israel after Mr. al-Arouri’s death. Israel’s military hit back at Hezbollah in Lebanon, killing several of the group’s commanders .

March and April: An Israeli drone strike hit a car in southern Lebanon, killing at least one person. Israel’s military said it had killed the deputy commander of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit. Hezbollah acknowledged the death of a man, Ali Abdulhassan Naim, but did not provide further details.

The same day, airstrikes killed soldiers near Aleppo, northern Syria, in what appeared to be one of the heaviest Israeli attacks in the country in years. The strikes killed 36 Syrian soldiers, seven Hezbollah fighters and a Syrian from a pro-Iran militia, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group that tracks Syria’s civil war.

Israel’s military did not claim responsibility. But the country’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, wrote on social media, “We will pursue Hezbollah every place it operates and we will expand the pressure and the pace of the attacks.”

Three days later, strikes on an Iranian Embassy building in Damascus killed three top Iranian commanders and four officers, an attack Iran blamed on Israel.
