How The Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) Points Work and Why They Matter!

This post seeks to answer two common questions about the disc golf pro tour (DGPT) points system. How do they work? AND Why do they Matter? I’ll break it down into simple terms and show you what you need to know. Let’s go!

I’ve gone deep into the weeds on this one and lived to tell the tale…

There’s a lot of confusion around how these Disc Golf Pro Tour points work, and why they even matter.

I’m going to break it down nice and simple. I’ll also show you where you can get more specific details if you want to wade into the weeds yourself.

Let’s get right into it…

What Are Disc Golf Pro Tour Points?

black and white photo with silhouette of disc golfer putting credit to @discgolfprotour

Basically, every pro player earns points based on eligible events that are played each season.

For every eligible event they complete, they earn points. The top 50 (for MPO and FPO) in any given event get more points (decreasing from 1st to 50th place) than 51st place and below. However, if you complete the event and finish below 50th, you still get some points (weighted accordingly).

Therefore, the better the player does in a given event, the more points they earn.

Next, let’s look into this weighting system. It makes sense that first place in a Major is worth far more than first place in a Silver Series Event. And the equation, as you’ll see, for figuring out points earned is pretty straight forward…

DGPT Tournament Point Weighting System.

Essentially, there are 3 tiers of tournaments for players to earn points and the number of points earned for a given place depends on how that event is weighted. Here are the 3 point categories.

Elite Series: It’s easiest to think of this as the baseline point system. In an elite series event, first place earns 100 points.

brown and beige weighing scale

Elite Series+/Majors/Playoffs: These are weighted more! A first place in any of these events is worth 150 points. That’s a 1.5x multiplier (or 50% more) compared to Elite Series.

Qualified Silver Series/Euro Tour Events: These are weighted less. A first place in any of the eligible Silver Series or Euro Tour events is worth 50 points. That’s a .5x multiplier (or 50% less) compared to Elite Series point totals.

Let’s look now at how many events are eligible and how players accumulate points.

How Many DGPT Events Count For Points?

For pro players, it’s not as simple as just playing as many eligible events as possible to rack up as many points as you can.

There are certain restrictions for each classification of events. Let’s look!

Elite Series/Elite Series+: Typically, in a given year, there are 13 of these events (11 ES and 2 ES+). A player only gets their 8 best point totals from these 13 events.

Majors: There are 3 Majors in a year and a player gets their 2 best point totals from the 3 majors.

Playoffs: There are 2 designated “playoff” events and both of these count towards a players point totals. The MVP Open at Maple Hill is an example of one such “playoff” event.

Silver/PDGA Euro Tour : There are usually upwards of 15 eligible Silver/Euro Tour Events that are eligible but only your top 3 scores from these are included in your point totals.

Example Using The Perfect Season

Let’s pretend that a player played every event and finished first place each time. Not all the events would count towards their point totals, but there’s plenty of incentive, besides points, to win events.

In this scenario, the player that played every event and finished first would earn 1,650 points.

If they won all 13 Elite/Elite+ events only 8 would be eligible for points. Because the 2 Elite+ events count for more points you would use both of those (2 x 150 = 300 points) and the final 6 slots would be used on your Elite Series wins (6 x 100 = 600 points). That totals 900 points (300 + 600) for those 8 events.

If they won all 3 majors they could only use 2 of them for points. So 2 x 150 = 300 points.

If they won both playoffs that’s another 300 points (2 x 150).

And finally, if they won all of the Silver/Euro Tour Events it would only mean another 150 points. Only 3 of these events are eligible for points and a win is only 50 points (3 x 50 = 150).

Adding it all up you get 900 for Elite/Elite+, 300 for 2 of 3 majors, 300 for both playoffs and the 150 for the three eligible Silver Series/Euro Tour Events.

900 + 300 + 300 + 150 = 1,650 maximum points.

A frequent question that comes up is the differences, for points, in MPO vs. FPO. Let’s look at that next.

Differences in MPO vs. FPO

Disc Golf FPO leaderboard.

Generally, in a given event, the MPO field usually has more participants. There are still quite a few events for FPO where I see less than 50 participants.

Despite this, the point system is the same . First place in an Elite Series Event, for example, is worth 100 points for both winners.

So, you might find that a player in the FPO field with a similar skill level relative to the MPO player to have more points in general. However, because those two players don’t compete against each other in points, it all comes out in the wash.

The only real difference gets revealed in the next section on why these DGPT points even matter!

Why Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) Points Matter

In essence, the points matter for two reasons…

Reason #1 – Tour Card Automatic Qualification – I wouldn’t know, but life as a professional disc golfer becomes a whole lot easier if you have your tour card. Easy registration for events in addition to some other perks make the Tour Card a valuable commodity.

The top 80 MPO players and the top 40 FPO players are automatically eligible for their tour card for the following year. These are determined by your point totals for the previous season. That’s a lot less hoops to jump through!

This is also one big difference between MPO and FPO (80 vs. 40) as it pertains to points right now.

Reason #2 – Qualification and Seeding for the Tour Championship – The Tour Championship happens at the end of the year and offers big purses and extra exposure for the players (32 MPO and 20 FPO (that’s the second major difference between divisions btw)) that qualify for each division, FPO and MPO.

Qualification for this event is first given to all the winners of any Elite, Elite+, Major, or Playoff (of which there are 18 total).

After that, the remaining spots are given to the players with the highest point totals.

In addition, point totals are the sole determinant of your seeding! That means the highest point scorer gets the 1-seed and will get byes and play the player with the lowest point total. This will, in theory, give them the easiest path to victory and the bounty of prizes that come with it.

Want My Opinion?

Well, since you asked for it, here it is!

This will not be a scorcher. All in all, I like the tournament in the end and think it makes for good viewing.

My only quibble is with how the middle class gets left out. If you are just grinding away and you finish in 77th for MPO and get your tour card that’s huge!

On the flipside, if you squeak into the tournament at the end, it can be a boon for your career.

But what about the player that doesn’t really worry about getting their card but also doesn’t really have much of a chance to get into the tourney?

For them, the points don’t mean a whole lot. They’re just kind of… there. I would like to see a way to make those points more important for all the players. If any of you have ideas I’d love to hear them!

Who Are The Current Points Leaders?

Any given season the points leaders can vary greatly.

For up to date standings on who the top FPO and MPO points leaders are, you can click on this DGPT link that should be up to date.

Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) Points – In Summary

There you have it! That’s how Disc Golf Pro Tour Points are weighted by event, how many events are eligible for points, and why the points even matter.

For a lot of players getting their tour card makes these points invaluable. For others, it’s a ticket to a chance for big purses and great exposure. It remains to be seen if these points can have even more import and serve the “middle class” pro as well.

If you have ideas on how to make the points mean even more, post them in the comments!

In this post, I tried to stay out of the weeds. However, if you are looking to take more of a deep dive, be sure to check out this udisc post . It’ll show you what each place is worth for a given tournament, how ties are settled, and more!

I hope this helped you understand how the Disc Golf Pro Tour Points are allotted and why they matter. That, after all, was the whole point…

What is disc golf? What to know about emerging sport from courses to rules to Simon Lizotte

disc golf pro tour points

Move over pickleball . Disc golf is the latest sport emerging in popularity.

Disc golf is similar to golf, hence the name. But instead of clubs and balls, disc golf players utilize flying discs on the fairway. During a round of disc golf, the objective is to get the disc in the baskets at the end of each hole in the least amount of strokes, considered a throw.

The sport is growing. There are more than 254,700 registered Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) members across the world.

Here's everything you need to know about disc golf, from the scoring system and rules, to what terms like albatross even mean.

What is disc golf?

Disc golf is similar to golf. But instead of clubs and balls, disc golf utilizes flying discs. During a round of disc golf, the objective is to get the disc in the baskets each round in the least amount of strokes, considered a throw.

Different variations of disc golf date back to the early 1900s, but the modern game was formalized in the 1970s by Ed "Steady" Headrick, who trademarked the Frisbee in 1966 and the Disc Golf Pole Hole in 1975.

What does a disc golf course look like?

Disc golf is normally played on a course featuring nine or 18 holes. Instead of holes in the ground, disc golf targets are wire baskets connected to hanging chains that catch discs. Course obstacles include trees, bushes, terrain changes, water hazards and out-of-bounds zone, which results in a penalty throw.

The first official disc golf course was installed by Headrick at Oak Grove Park in Pasadena, California, in 1975.

There are more than 9,000 disc golf courses in the United States, according to the PDGA .

Disc golf rules

A player starts each hole at a tee box and must toss the disc without crossing over the tee line. Players then pick up their disc where it lands on the fairway and throw again until they reach the target. Each throw counts as a stroke and the total throws for all holes represent the player's score for the round. The player with the fewest strokes on the previous hole tees off first on the next hole, with the player whose disc is the farthest from the hole going first after all players have teed off.

How is disc golf scored?

The scoring system is also similar to golf. Each hole has a predetermined average score: par. One stoke under par is a birdie, two strokes under par is an eagle.

Three strokes under par is an albatross.

If a player hits the basket from the tee in one shot, that's called an ace.

One over par is a bogey, two over par is a double bogey and so forth.

What is a Mando in disc golf?

Mando is short for "mandatory." According to Disc Golf United:

"Some trees, light poles, buildings or other obstacles on the disc golf course may be designated by the course designer and/or TD as mandos. Your disc must travel past the correct side of the mando. If not, you will be assessed a one-stroke penalty and then throw from either a drop zone or your previous lie."

What is overstable, understable in disc golf?

Players are allowed to use a variety of discs on different shots, just as golfers are able to use different clubs. A putter, mid-range, and high-speed driver are the three most common types of discs. Stability also varies. On a right-handed, backhand throw:

  • an understable disc typically fades right during flight (and is considered better for beginners)
  • a  stable  disc   typically flies straight during flight
  • an overstable  disc typically tracks to the left during flight (and used by more experienced players)

Is disc golf an Olympic sport?

Who is simon lizotte.

Lizotte is a German professional disc golfer who previously held the world record for longest throw of a disc at 903.9 feet in 2016. Lizotte has five Disc Golf Pro Tour wins under his belt and was named the European Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015. According to the PDGA , Lizotte has participated in 245 events with 77 career wins. He has earned more than $247,000.

In January, Lizotte signed a ten-year sponsorship deal with MVP Discs.

Pro Disc Golf Stats (MPO): Who Was Best In 2023?

The 2023 pro disc golf season has come to an end and that means the time has come again to recognize those who topped the charts on UDisc Live , which was used to track tournament scores and stats by every major disc golf tour in the world in 2023. Note that to be eligible for these superlatives, a player had to have at least 160 holes tracked with UDisc Live during the 2023 season (including from two wraparound events played in 2022 as part of the 2023 Disc Golf Pro Tour season). Enjoy exploring which MPO disc golfers rocked it in 2023:

BEST PUTTING IN PRO DISC GOLF: 2023 MPO

Best circle 1 putters in pro disc golf: mpo 2023.

Andrew Marwede's 93.1% is the new record for single-season C1X putting percentage in the UDisc Live era. Marwede broke his own record of 92% from last year.

What's C1X?

C1X stands for Circle 1X.

Circle 1 (C1) is any point within 10 meters (about 33 feet) of the basket. At this range, a player has to maintain balance behind their lie (i.e., can't jump or step putt).

C1X refers to all putts between 10 and 3.3 meters (about 11 feet). We assume pros will make nearly 100% of putts within 3.3 meters, so C1X e X cludes these tap-ins, providing a clearer picture of putting skill.

Best Circle 2 Putters in Pro Disc Golf: MPO 2023

Though it won't surprise anyone to find sharp-shooter Corey Ellis' name in this top 10, learning that this is the only category where the 2023  PDGA Major winner's name appears in these superlatives might.

What's C2?

C2 stands for Circle 2, which is anything outside of 10 meters (about 33 feet) from the basket up to 20 meters (about 66 feet).

Longest Streaks With No Missed Circle 1 Putts in Pro Disc Golf: MPO 2023

Congrats to touring veteran Paul Ulibarri for putting together the longest C1 streak in pro disc golf in 2023!

These streaks could include makes from tap-in range, C1X, C2, and throw-ins (including aces). A miss from C2 didn't break the streak.

BEST THROWERS & THROWS IN PRO DISC GOLF: 2023 MPO

Most impressive distance shots in pro disc golf: mpo 2023.

Almost everyone reading this and likely more than a handful of players on tour feel like they'd need a miracle to get a disc to travel 600 feet/183 meters regardless of where it landed. What's stunning is that the players above not only went over that threshold but did it with pinpoint accuracy.

We identified these shots as the most impressive long-range throws of the year thanks to our Precise Power Index stat (see next section to learn more about PPI).

Highest Precise Power Index in Pro Disc Golf: MPO 2023

The precise power index (PPI) is a stat we released near the end of the 2022 season. The higher a player's average PPI, the more accurate they've proven to be when throwing distance shots. For MPO, that means shots of at least 400 feet/122 meters.

You can get more info on PPI in our post introducing the stat .

Players needed to play at least 50 holes that qualified for a PPI rating to make the list in the table above.

Best Fairway Hit Rates in Pro Disc Golf: MPO 2023

We've now seen Calvin Heimburg's name twice in this section on the best throwers (he topped PPI in 2023), but we never saw his name in any of the putting lists. Maybe that's a sign of what the superstar can work on in the offseason to finally clinch that first Major everyone expects out of him. Though, to be fair, Isaac Robinson also didn't make a top putter list, isn't ranked among the best in PPI, and actually trails Heimburg here. He still claimed two Majors in 2023, including the Professional Disc Golf World Championship.

What's a Fairway Hit?

Here's how we define a fairway hit:

  • Fairway Hits stats only cover players' first shots (i.e., tee shots) on par 3s and 4s.
  • On a par 3, a player's drive has to come to rest within C2 to count as a fairway hit.
  • On a par 4, the player's first shot needs to be in the fairway (e.g., not in the woods, OB, or in a hazard) or in C2.
  • On a par 5, a player can earn 0, 1, or 2 fairway hits. If a player's first shot lands in the fairway, it counts as a fairway hit (if it miraculously landed within C2, that would also count). A player's second shot can land in the fairway or within C2 and count as a fairway hit.

BIGGEST JUMPS IN DISC GOLF WORLD RANKING: MPO 2023

Congrats to these players for moving the farthest up in the world of MPO in 2023! See all of disc golf's MPO World Rankings here.

BEST AT KEEPING IT CLEAN & SCORING UNDER PAR: MPO 2023

Highest birdie rates in pro disc golf: mpo 2023.

These are actually "birdie or better" rates as they includes eagles and aces, too.

Most Eagles in Pro Disc Golf: MPO 2023

Little ol' birdies weren't enough to feed these big arms. They wanted eagles and got lots of 'em.

What's an Eagle?

When a player completes a hole in two fewer strokes than par (hole-in-one on a par 3, two strokes on a par 4, or three on a par 5), they get an eagle.

Longest Bogey-Free Streaks in Pro Disc Golf: MPO 2023

Eagle McMahon flew away with this category, playing the equivalent of over five bogey-free rounds  in a row  while tackling courses set up specifically to test the world's best players.

Longest Birdie Streaks in Pro Disc Golf: MPO 2023

Finn Miro Ryhänen's impressive streak helped him beat more internationally-known players Niklas Anttila and Eagle McMahon at the Åland Open, the biggest event to date in the small nation of islands that opened over 10 disc golf courses within a year not too long ago.

Lowest Bogey Rates in Pro Disc Golf: MPO 2023

Though Paul McBeth had a bit of a rough season by his standards and ended it early due to injury, it's worth noting his name showed up before on the highest birdie rate list and now again on the one for lowest bogey rate. Only Calvin Heimburg and Eagle McMahon also made it in both of those top 10s. It seems McBeast, Mr. Six-Time, or whatever you like to call the player many consider the GOAT wasn't as off as it may have felt. And speaking of not going anywhere, it's impressive to see the over-50-year-old Scott Stokely making appearances in these year-end superlative lists. He made one of the year's biggest jumps in world ranking , and you'll also see him near the top of the scramble rate  rankings.

By the way, the bogey totals include all sorts of bogeys – single, double, triple, and so on.

Best Scramble Rates in Pro Disc Golf: MPO 2023

What's a scramble.

The scramble stat tracks a player's ability to recover from an off-target drive and avoid carding a bogey. If a player ever throws OB or off the fairway and still earns par or better on a hole, they've successfully scrambled.

THE BEST AT KEEPIN' ON KEEPIN' ON: MPO 2023

Best bounce back rates in pro disc golf: mpo 2023.

A player successfully "bounces back" when they card a birdie or better after getting bogey or worse on the previous hole. That means every bogey a player gets means another chance to bounce back.

Most Active Pro Disc Golfers: MPO 2023

in 2023 Isaac Robinson won a world championship, became the only person not named McBeth or Wysocki to win two Majors in a single season in over a decade, and played more holes at the world's top disc golf events than anyone else  by far . Here's to you, Mr. Robinson.

Thanks to Everyone!

Nothing you see above would have been possible without the amazing volunteers who scored and tracked stats for the pros throughout 2023, or UDisc Live's partners . We want to extend a huge "Thank You" to them all.
