ChatGPT can live on a Mac

OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November, built on the company's GPT-3 machine learning models. Companies such as Microsoft have integrated it while others — including Google — fear it .

It has various applications to answer questions and generate text, and a new app has appeared that brings it to the Mac menu bar.

Created by Jordi Bruin, MacGPT is a macOS app available for free, though people can add their own price to help support the developer.

Once a user logs in with their OpenAI credentials, they can click the menu bar icon to start a conversation. It's also possible to assign it a keyboard shortcut to activate MacGPT without needing a mouse or trackpad.

How to use ChatGPT on Mac with MacGPT

MacGPT is available to run on macOS versions of Monterey and Ventura.

  • Visit Bruin's webpage on Gumroad .
  • Enter 0 in the price box to download it for free — but we recommend throwing Bruin a few bucks.
  • Click " I want this! " and the 3.1MB download will start immediately.
  • Double-click on the zip file in your Downloads folder, then drag the app to the Applications folder .

A Web tab inside the app allows you to log in with OpenAI credentials. Visit the OpenAI website to sign up for a free account. Under the Native tab, accessing ChatGPT via API credentials found in your OpenAI account user settings is possible.

How to use ChatGPT on Mac - Examples of questions and prompts

The MacGPT app notes that this provides faster responses and a more fluid experience. After logging in, the app shows prompts straight from OpenAI.

These prompts remind users that it's currently a research preview and that some of the information generated might be incorrect, misleading, offensive, or biased.

ChatGPT offers various example prompts with which to get started. For example, type "Explain quantum computing in simple terms" or "Got any creative ideas for a 10-year-old's birthday?"

Once a question or statement is answered, ChatGPT will generate a response. Depending on the query, some results can be longer than others. If it's taking a while, there is a button to stop it from running.

It wasn't that simple

At the bottom of the answer are buttons to like or dislike a response. OpenAI added that option as a way for people to give feedback on ChatGPT's reponses in case it "hallucinates," which means it can provide an answer that is false or not supported by its training data.

Additionally, MacGPT and the ChatGPT website save conversations in a history so users can revisit them. It's also possible to access ChatGPT via OpenAI's website , and it's functionally identical to MacGPT without unique features.

How to Use ChatGPT on a Mac

Although OpenAI doesn't have an official desktop app, you still have multiple options to easily access and use ChatGPT on your Mac.

OpenAI's ChatGPT is, without a doubt, the leading public AI tool. You can use it to generate text, research, and improve your overall productivity. It works just fine on macOS, making it the best chatbot for Mac users.

But you might be wondering how exactly you can use ChatGPT on a Mac. Luckily, you don't have to worry if you've ever used it on another device because the steps are identical. However, if you are new to this, follow the steps below.

How to Use ChatGPT via Your Mac's Browser

OpenAI doesn't offer an official ChatGPT desktop app for macOS. Therefore, accessing ChatGPT through its website in your browser is still the best way to use ChatGPT on a Mac.

Here's how to use the AI chatbot in your browser:

  • Select Log in if you already have an account, and if you don't, choose Sign up .
  • Enter your email and password.

As soon as you're done, you can access ChatGPT and begin to type in your prompts. You can use your browser to access ChatGPT alternatives as well if you'd like to explore other chatbots.

By default, you get GPT 3.5 for free. You have to pay for ChatGPT Plus to access GPT 4 , a better and more creative version of GPT 3.5.

Other Ways to Access ChatGPT on a Mac

While the browser is the most reliable way to access ChatGPT on a Mac, some other methods could shorten the steps you need to take to use it.

  • If you want to integrate the chatbot into your Mac so that you can use it without opening your browser, you can download MacGPT . It's a third-party app that can add dialogue windows for ChatGPT to your desktop and menu bar. But you have to pay $20 for it.

That's about all the known ways you can use OpenAI's chatbot on a Mac. If you run into any issues, check out our list of common ChatGPT errors for assistance.

Wait for an Official ChatGPT App for Your Mac

Accessing ChatGPT through your Mac's browser is the safest option for now. If you don't mind paying for a third-party app, you can go ahead and get one of them, like MacGPT, for example. However, it's probably a good idea to wait and see if OpenAI releases a desktop app for macOS, although that seems unlikely.

8 Ways To Get ChatGPT On A Mac

ChatGPT has set the internet on fire with its incredible Artificial Intelligence and here we show you some different ways to use ChatGPT on a Mac.

ChatGPT is a deep learning AI chatbot that can generate text on just about anything incredibly accurately.

The possibilities are endless with ChatGPT and there’s no doubt that it is a next level technology that goes beyond anything that Siri, Alexa or other “virtual assistants” are capable of.

However, there’s no official ChatGPT application on any platform yet, so here we look at ways you can use ChatGPT on a Mac for free and integrate it more closely with macOS including the latest Apple Silicon Macs.

All of these ways of installing ChatGPT on a Mac also work on the latest versions of macOS including Sonoma .

Quick Navigation

Is ChatGPT Free To Use?

Does chatgpt work on mac, 2. create a chatgpt dock shortcut in safari, 3. chatgpt for desktop, 4. chatgpt web, 6. configure a shortcut, 7. integrate chatgpt with python.

At the moment, ChatGPT is free to use on all platforms but the developer OpenAI has now introduced a ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month.

ChatGPT Plus offers faster response times, better access during peak times and first access to new features.

ChatGPT works on any platform including Macs as it’s entirely web based but there are also ways to integrate it into macOS.

Windows users can save ChatGPT as a Windows app using the Edge browser but this isn’t possible on a Mac unless you have already installed Windows on your Mac .

Microsoft has also recently released Bing, Edge and Skype AI apps for iPhone and iPad which is based on BingAI but nothing for Mac.

Apple doesn’t have a chatbot like ChatGPT either and there is no official ChatGPT app for Mac to download but here are the best ways to access ChatGPT on a Mac.

 macgpt application

You can access ChatGPT from your Mac’s Menu Bar thanks to a free third party app called macGPT .

macGPT allows you to start new conversations on your Mac desktop and also resume ones that you have already started. You can also access macGPT from the Main Menu via the brain icon even when apps are in full screen mode.

To use ChatGPT with macGPT follow these instructions.

  • Sign-up for an OpenAI ChatGPT account . You’ll need to enter your name, email address and telephone number to verify your account.
  • Download menuGPT and drag it to your Applications folder.
  • Double click on it and login with your OpenAI credentials.

You can then use ChatGPT via macGPT from your Mac’s Menu bar. You can also change the settings so that macGPT is always on top floating over other windows.

menugpt chat settings

You can download macGPT for free although the developer encourages a small donation.

If you find that macGPT is not working when you enter a request, then it’s probably because ChatGPT is at capacity.

Note that this is not a problem with macGPT but is due to high demand on ChatGPT.

safari web apps chatgpt

If you’ve already updated your Mac to macOS Sonoma , then you can easily create a desktop Dock shortcut to access ChatGPT on your Mac anytime.

This has been possible on iOS devices like iPhones and iPads for some time but is also now possible in the latest version of Safari in macOS Sonoma.

In fact, you can do this for any website you use in Safari.

To create a ChatGPT app shortcut in the Dock using Safari in macOS Sonoma, follow these instructions.

  • Visit ChatGPT in Safari. You don’t have to log into your account or anything to create the Dock app for it.
  • Go to File in the top right of Safari.
  • Click on the Add To Dock option.
  • Click on Add .

You’ve then instantly created a ChatGPT app for Mac that sits in your Dock like any other application.

The latest version of Safari also has a “web app” view mode which is like a simplified version of the browser which may be better for using ChatGPT when you click on the app in the Dock.

chatgpt for mac desktop

ChatGPT For Desktop is similar to macGPT and allows you to access ChatGPT from your Mac’s Menu Bar.

Once installed, you can either click on the ChatGPT For Desktop logo in the Menu Bar or use CMD + Shift + G to quickly open it from anywhere.

Note that there are two different downloads for ChatGPT For Desktop: one for Intel Macs and one for Apple Silicon ARM M1, M2 and M3 Macs.

You can download ChatGPT For Desktop here and watch how to install it below.

The quickest and easiest way to use ChatGPT on a Mac is simply to use the ChatGPT website in any browser such as Safari, Firefox or Chrome.

Once you’ve signed-up, you can ask ChatGPT anything and wait for a response.

If you sign-up with a Google or Microsoft account you only need to provide your email address to verify your account.

If you just sign-up with an email address, you’ll also need to provide your mobile number to verify your account.

You can then bookmark ChatGPT in your browser for easy access anytime you need it.

You can sign-up for ChatGPT here .

chatgpt in mac browser

HelloAI is an AI Chatbot Assistant that allows you to use ChatGPT on your Mac desktop.

HelloAI requires you to have a ChatGPT account and helps you get answers to quick questions instantly via ChatGPT on your Mac desktop.

HelloAI sits in the top right corner of your screen and also includes a useful Prompt Library that saves your favorite and frequently used prompts.

There’s also a Prompt Store which provides hundreds of prompts for various topics ranging from business and education to travel and entertainment.

This could be useful for Marketing Professionals looking for brainstorming inspiration, Business Executives needing to communicate clearly with a team and generate meeting agendas and students that need to simplify research.

However, HelloAI also requires a $2.99 weekly or $9.99 monthly plan on top of your ChatGPT subscription if you have one.

You download HelloAI from the Mac App store.

You can also integrate ChatGPT in other apps such as Gmail, Microsoft Office and more by creating a Shortcut although this is the most complicated way of setting-up ChatGPT on a Mac.

Creating a shortcut on your Mac basically allows you to access ChatGPT from any application although it won’t work in all cases.

To setup a shortcut to use ChatGPT you need to:

  • Sign-up for an OpenAI account .
  • Get an OpenAI API key which allows ChatGPT to communicate with Siri.
  • Click on “Create Secret New Key” and keep the API key safe somewhere.

You then need to create a Shortcut on your Mac instructions for which you can find below.

If you’re a programmer using Python, you can also integrate ChatGPT with Python on a Mac.

Python can access ChatGPT via the OpenAI API client similar to the other methods of integrating ChatGPT that we’ve already looked at.

Of course, it’s only useful for programmers although you may find that other coding platforms can also access the OpenAI API client on a Mac too.

To use ChatGPT With Python, follow the instructions below.

chattab mac

If you want a convenient way to use ChatGPT on your Mac then try ChatTab.

ChatTab downloads onto your Mac desktop and works in a tab layout format a bit like using a browser. You’ll of course need an OpenAI account and OpenAI key to link ChatTab to ChatGPT.

You can display a floating windows above any app and it’s ideal for Markdown with headings, codes, ordered lists etc.

ChatTab also does not store any of your private information, chats or log your activity either.

You can even use ChatTab for free but you will be limited to one single tab.

You can download ChatTab for Mac free and try it for yourself.

BlessU for walking me through the phenomenal mysteries of ChatGPT for MacBook Pro users! I’ve been dying to learn but my righteous MacBookPro M1 Max has been a problemo with YouTube videos.¯\(°_o)/¯ Adventure outside and take sweet care of yourself…(>‿◠)✌

MacGPT: how to use ChatGPT on your Mac

Fionna Agomuoh

Apple might not officially be in the AI space, but a developer has created a legitimate way to bring ChatGPT to macOS and make the chatbot accessible from your menu bar.

How to download MacGPT

How to sign in or register for macgpt, what to expect when using macgpt for the first time, macgpt special features.

The aptly named MacGPT is an application developed by Jordi Bruin that allows you to install ChatGPT as a remote browser on your Mac desktop. The application has been available since the 2022 holiday season and has garnered over 370 ratings, many of which are five stars. MacGPT is currently free, however, Bruin accepts donations. Once out of beta, he will make MacGPT available at the App Store, where it will sell for $5.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re interested in trying out MacGPT.

You can access the MacGPT download on Bruin’s Gumroad page . If you’d like to leave a donation, you can input your fair price. Select I want this and it will take you to the download page. Enter your email address and then select G et to begin the download. You will receive a receipt in your email detailing that you purchased the product, regardless of if you donated or not. The app is compatible with macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura.

  • How to take a screenshot on a Mac
  • Apple finally has a way to defeat ChatGPT
  • ChatGPT AI chatbot can now be used without an account

Keep in mind that MacGPT is just ChatGPT in a Mac ecosystem. When opening the app, it closely resembles Apple’s Safari browser, but everything looks and feels very much like ChatGPT. The browser will open a ChatGPT welcome window giving you the option to either log in or sign up for ChatGPT.

If you already have an OpenAI account, or you subscribe to ChatGPT Plus , you can use your credentials to quickly access ChatGPT. If you use a Google or Microsoft account as your login, you can also use that to finish setup. Note that if you have two-factor authentication enabled on one of these sign-in methods, you’ll need to authenticate with a security token or app. If you don’t have an account, you can quickly register through the app on-screen.

Once logged in, you will have an experience similar to logging into ChatGPT on a standard browser. There are notifications detailing that ChatGPT is a free research preview and that some of the information generated might be incorrect, misleading, offensive, or biased.

There is a notification about how ChatGPT collects data and one encouraging feedback. When you get to the chatbot, it is identical to the online generator, which showcases examples, capabilities, and limitations. If you already have an account, you should be able to see your history of prior queries in the upper-left. Inputting a new prompt will generate your desired response and update your history, which you’ll then be able to see if you log into the original ChatGPT on a separate browser.

MacGPT does have some features that are unique to the application. You can set a keyboard shortcut for the app so that it opens without the use of a mouse. You can access this feature through the MacGPT preferences, which are located in the upper-right corner of the screen.

You can also select the A lways on top option to have the MacGPT icon show up on the Mac screen header as a drop-down application.

Overall, though, MacGPT is basically a shortcut for the browser-based version of ChatGPT. It has the advantage of showing an icon on your desktop, but there were a few oddities I noticed when using the app:

  • You can purchase ChatGPT Plus through MacGPT since everything is identical to the web-based chatbot. At first, I got an error message when attempting to access the link. This could indicate that MacGPT suffers from the same throttling issues as the free ChatGPT. However, attempting again a few minutes later took me to the checkout page.
  • If you already have ChatGPT Plus, you can input your confirmation code into the Plus section located in the top-right corner of the browser.
  • MacGPT features a Dark mode similar to the web-based ChatGPT.
  • The only thing that appears nonfunctional on the MacGPT interface is the Updates & FAQ link.
  • When opening MacGPT, you might occasionally get a CAPTCHA notification asking you to confirm that you’re human.

Other than that, MacGPT is a simple way to access ChatGPT without going through your browser and not much more. Thankfully, there are some other interesting ways OpenAI’s tech is being implemented on other platforms. For example, Snapchat recently announced its My AI tool inside the app, and Slack integrated a ChatGPT bot into its application as well.

It looks like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Sora, among other projects, are about to get a lot more juice. According to a new report shared by The Information, Microsoft and OpenAI are working on a new data center project, one part of which will be a massive AI supercomputer dubbed "Stargate." Microsoft is said to be footing the bill, and the cost is astronomical as the name of the supercomputer suggests -- the whole project might cost over $100 billion.

Spending over $100 billion on anything is mind-blowing, but when put into perspective, the price truly shows just how big a venture this might be: The Information claims that the new Microsoft and OpenAI joint project might cost a whopping 100 times more than some of the largest data centers currently in operation.

One of the best parts of macOS is learning and executing all of Apple’s many internal shortcuts. These are hidden commands built into the company’s hardware that are total godsends when it comes to things like click consolidation (one command instead of three clicks) and workflow optimization. Some of these commands you may already know, but we’re willing to bet there’s at least one or two we can introduce to you!

That’s our goal at any rate, and we’ve gone ahead and created this roundup of several trackpad gestures you can use in macOS for all our readers. Even if you don’t use shortcuts all the time, one of these quick executables could come in handy down the line.  Zoom in or out

GPT-5, OpenAI's next large language model (LLM), is in the pipeline and should be launched within months, people close to the matter told Business Insider.

Two anonymous sources told the publication that GPT-5 may be set to release during the summer and that OpenAI is currently sending demos of the technology, as well as updates to the accompanying ChatGPT chatbot, to its enterprise customers for testing.

How to Access ChatGPT From Your Mac's Menu Bar

OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot offers a new generation of conversational AI functionality that promises to fundamentally change the technological landscape and the way people work. Here's how to access it directly from your Mac's menu bar.

ChatGPT on App Store Feature

ChatGPT is trained on a large corpus of text corralled from the internet, which allows it to answer a wide variety of questions and generate coherent responses to many different types of prompts.

That's why Microsoft has added its Bing GPT chatbot to the Taskbar with the latest Windows 11 update, and why Google plans to integrate its Bard experimental conversational AI service to Google Search.

Sadly, Apple doesn't have a chatbot service similar to ChatGPT, and there's no indication that the company will launch one soon, so macOS integration is likely some ways off. However, thanks to one developer, it is possible to interact with ChatGPT right from your Mac's menu bar.

macgpt

In the app's settings, there's an option to make the MacGPT window always on top, so it floats over other windows. You can also record a keyboard shortcut that launches the chat window.

Bing Chat powered by OpenAI tech is rolling out to Chrome and Safari

It only accepts 2,000 word prompts on those browsers though, compared to 4,000 on edge..

Microsoft's Bing Chat is no longer exclusive to the Edge browser, as it's now rolling out to Chrome and Safari, as Windows Latest first reported and The Verge confirmed. "We are flighting access to Bing Chat in Safari and Chrome to select users as part of our testing on other browsers," a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge . "We are excited to expand access to even more users once our standard testing procedures are complete."

It seems to be more than a small test, as a number of users (including myself on Chrome but not Safari) have gained access. There are a few limitations, though. You have to be logged into your Microsoft account, and prompts are limited to 2,000 characters compared to 4,000 on Edge. Conversations reset after five queries rather than 30, and it constantly prompts you to download Edge (never change, Microsoft).

Bing Chat is powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT-4, giving users access to the latter's features without the need to pay. There are some differences, though, as Bing Chat has access to Bing Search while ChatGPT-4 by itself doesn't, so can provide more up-to-date information and sources for responses. However, OpenAI's chat generally provides more detailed responses. Recently, a paper came out claiming that ChatGPT-4's capabilities have declined , but some experts have downplayed the conclusions.

On top of releasing it for other browsers, Microsoft also introduced a dark mode for Bing Chat. To use it, click on the hamburger menu at the top right and select "Appearance/Dark." That function may not yet be available for all users.

How to use ChatGPT in your browser with the right extensions

lance-31.png

Beyond using OpenAI's ChatGPT at its website or through an app , you can access it directly from your browser via an extension. Such extensions as ChatGPT for Chrome, ChatGPT everywhere, Merlin, Monica, WebChatGPT, AI Anywhere for ChatGPT, and Talk-to-ChatGPT integrate with OpenAI's chatbot so that you can more quickly and easily submit your requests and prompts.

Also: ChatGPT fraud is on the rise: Here's what to watch out for

As these extensions communicate with ChatGPT, you'll typically need an account with OpenAI. If you don't yet have one, head to the ChatGPT sign in/sign up page and click the Sign up button. The options accessible with each extension may also vary based on whether you have a free or paid ChatGPT account. Now let's check out a few extensions.

ChatGPT for Chrome

Available for Chrome and Edge through the Chrome Web Store , ChatGPT for Chrome provides a convenient window through which you can chat.

Also:   The best AI chatbots to try

After installing and clicking the extension, you'll be asked to sign into your OpenAI account. Type your request at the prompt, and the AI bot will respond. Continue to pose more questions or tap the plus icon to start a new chat. To access your history, tap the hamburger icon in the upper left. From here, you can rename a chat or remove it completely.

ChatGPT everywhere

Designed for Firefox , ChatGPT everywhere provides access to ChatGPT via a left sidebar in the browser. Select the extension's icon, click the link for OpenAI ChatGPT, and then log into your ChatGPT account. Type your request at the prompt. After the response appears, type additional requests or click the plus icon to start over with a new chat.

Also:   How to use ChatGPT to build your resume

Click the dropdown menu for Chat everywhere and you can switch the content in the sidebar to your bookmarks, history, or synced tabs, and move the sidebar to the right. Wait, there's more. Available from the extension's icon, an entry for Prompts takes you to different webpages with suggestions for prompts. Plus, the developer is working on access to Bing Chat and Google Bard.

Merlin ChatGPT Assistant

Supported in Chrome and Edge through the Chrome Web Store , Merlin ChatGPT Assistant comes in a free edition that limits you to 51 queries per day. If you want more, upgrading to Merlin Pro will cost you $19 a month to start and then ramp up from there depending on your needs.

Also:   I asked ChatGPT, Bing, and Bard what worries them. Google's AI went Terminator on me

After installing and accessing the extension, you're asked to create a free account to use it. To activate Merlin, just press Ctrl+M in Windows. A sidebar opens on the right for you to enter your query. Type your prompt at the bottom of the sidebar and fire away. After Merlin displays the response, you can ask it to expand on its answer or start a new chat. A History list displays your past prompts, while a Settings page lets you change the language, user interface, and other options.

Designed for Chrome and Edge , Monica is another ChatGPT extension with both free and paid versions . The freebie limits you to 30 queries per day. A starter plan priced at $9 per month grants you 2,500 queries for the month, a boost plan costing $19 a month ups that to 8,000 each month, and an elite plan with a price tag of $39 a month doles out an unlimited number of queries.

Also:   How to use the new Bing (and how it's different from ChatGPT)

As with Merlin, you trigger Monica by pressing Ctrl+M on your keyboard. The interface pops up as a sidebar on the left. Monica lets you choose from two types of queries. A chat mode allows you to post a series of questions, while a compose mode lets you ask Monica to write something for you. With compose mode, you can control the type of response by selecting a length, format, tone, and language. Choose the mode you wish to use and then type or speak your query.

Monica displays the response. You can rate the answer by giving it a thumbs up or thumbs down, edit the text to fine-tune it, and share or copy the response. Monica also points you to a history of your chats, so you can refer back to any previous conversations. Plus, a Settings page lets you modify the shortcut, sidebar, and other elements.

Supported in Chrome , Firefox , and Edge through the Chrome Web Store , WebChatGPT takes you to the ChatGPT website but offers a spin by including search results from the web in the response. Type your question or request at the prompt. Depending on the information you seek, the response will display links to three different sites by default and then provide further details in its answer. This can be helpful if you'd like to track down the source of the info provided by ChatGPT.

Also:   How to make ChatGPT provide sources and citations

At the prompt, type a slash if you want to limit the results to a specific website or page. From the bottom toolbar, you can turn web access on or off and change the number of web-based results. You're also able to modify the time to include results from the past day, month, or year. And you can limit results to a specific country or region.

AI Anywhere for ChatGPT

Designed for Chrome , Firefox , and Edge through the Chrome Web Store , AI Anywhere for ChatGPT offers a window in which you type your requests and see the responses. But even cooler, the extension works in a context sensitive way. This means that with AI Anywhere active, you can select and right-click text on any webpage. An AI Anywhere menu item then pops up with options to use ChatGPT to explain, translate, or summarize the selected text. You can even add your own custom context-sensitive commands.

Also:   How to use Midjourney to generate amazing images

To use AI Anywhere for ChatGPT, click the icon for the extension and type your request at the prompt. Alternatively, select any text on the screen that you'd like to have explained or translated by ChatGPT and then submit the prompt. After the response appears, continue the chat or start a new one.

Talk-to-ChatGPT

Designed for Chrome and Edge , Talk-to-ChatGPT lets you submit your request by speaking instead of typing. After installing this one, sign into the ChatGPT home page. With the extension active, a small window appears at the top right of the screen. Click the window's Start button, give your microphone access, and then speak your request. The response from ChatGPT is then spoken using text to speech.

Also:   How to write better ChatGPT prompts

From the small window, you can turn the voice dictation and text to speech on or off as well as skip the response being read by the extension. Another button takes you to the settings screen where you're able to change the language, the AI voice, the speed and pitch, and other options.

OpenAI's Sam Altman invests $20 million in a green energy startup, but will it satisfy ChatGPT's power-hungry demands?

Sam Altman is betting on green energy to save OpenAI's future AI advances.

Sam Altman

What you need to know

  • Sam Altman and several other AI investors have reportedly invested $20 million in a green energy startup called Exowatt.
  • The investment is in place to help potentially present an opportunity where AI companies can leverage renewable energy, amid concerns of insufficient power to facilitate AI advances.
  • While this promotes sustainability, AI still faces multiple challenges that prevent it from realizing its full potential, including high demand for cooling water and operational costs.

Every major tech-based company is rushing to claim its stake in the generative AI wave . Admittedly, many technological advances have been achieved through it over the past few months across medicine , education , computing, and more. However, the cutting-edge technology is riddled by several challenges.

Billionaire Elon Musk recently indicated that we're on the verge of the biggest technological revolution with AI , but there won't be enough power to foster its advances and development by 2025. This aligns with a report from last year that indicated Copilot AI and ChatGPT will have consumed enough electricity to power a small country for a whole year by 2027 .

But as it now seems, OpenAI's Sam Altman is on the precipice of potentially resolving this issue, his answer to the technology's high power demand — green energy. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal , Altman and investors in the AI landscape are actively seeking refuge in green energy startups like Exowatt.

OpenAI's CEO has partnered with several other investors and injected approximately $20 million into Exowatt. The investment is an indication AI is here for the long haul. While the green energy startup might not completely substitute or replace AI's high demand for electricity, it's a step in the right direction and promotes sustainability.

Exowatt renews OpenAI's hopes for the future with AI

Robot in the forest with a water stream and power lines

As highlighted, Exowatt is a green energy startup company specializing in renewable energy and seeks to supply AI companies like OpenAI or even Microsoft with modular solar systems with the capability of providing enough energy to satisfy their power needs.

If Exowatt is capable of fully satisfying these needs, it'll not only allow OpenAI to fully transition to renewable energy for its AI advances but also help it save on cost and avoid regulatory issues with antitrust watchdogs.

Unfortunately, power isn't the only challenging affecting AI

Robot standing in front of city with Microsoft logo

Power is the main issue preventing the rapid adoption and growth of AI. However, it is also riddled with several other challenges that require elaborate measures and interventions.

Right off the bat, AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot already consume an insane amount of water for cooling — at least one water bottle per query. It also costs an arm and leg to keep these chatbots running with a report indicating OpenAI parts with up to $700,000 per day to keep ChatGPT running , and this figure may have gone up.

This is on top of the lawsuits the hot startup has been slapped with over the past few  months, from copyright infringement issues to a ' stark betrayal of the founding mission .' Reports indicate AI will become smarter than humans , leading to the end of humanity. But hey, Elon Musk says there's a 20% chance this will happen, so you should probably continue exploring it.

OpenAI is rumored to be dropping GPT-5 soon — here's what we know about the next-gen model

S ocial media is buzzing with rumors of a big OpenAI announcement. This has been sparked by the success of Meta’s Llama 3 (with a bigger model coming in July) as well as a cryptic series of images shared by the AI lab showing the number 22 .

As April 22 is OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s birthday — he’s 39 — the rumor mill is postulating that the company will drop something big such as Sora or even the much anticipated GPT-5.

If it is the latter and we get a major new AI model it will be a significant moment in artificial intelligence as Altman has previously declared it will be “ significantly better ” than its predecessor and will take people by surprise.

I personally think it will more likely be something like GPT-4.5 or even a new update to DALL-E, OpenAI’s image generation model but here is everything we know about GPT-5 just in case.

What do we know about GPT-5?

We know very little about GPT-5 as OpenAI has remained largely tight lipped on the performance and functionality of its next generation model. We know it will be “materially better” as Altman made that declaration more than once during interviews.

It is very likely going to be multimodal, meaning it can take input from more than just text but to what extent is unclear.

Each new large language model from OpenAI is a significant improvement on the previous generation across reasoning, coding, knowledge and conversation. GPT-5 will be no different.

It has been in training since late last year and will either have significantly more than the 1.5 trillion parameters in GPT-4, or a similar number but stronger underlying architecture allowing for a major performance improvement without increasing the overall model size.

This is something we’ve seen from others such as Meta with Llama 3 70B, a model much smaller than the likes of GPT-3.5 but performing at a similar level in benchmarks.

Chat GPT-5 is very likely going to be multimodal, meaning it can take input from more than just text but to what extent is unclear. Google’s Gemini 1.5 models can understand text, image, video, speech, code, spatial information and even music. GPT-5 is likely to have similar capabilities.

What will GPT-5 be able to do?

One of the biggest changes we might see with GPT-5 over previous versions is a shift in focus from chatbot to agent. This would allow the AI model to assign tasks to sub-models or connect to different services and perform real-world actions on its own.

This is an area the whole industry is exploring and part of the magic behind the Rabbit r1 AI device. It allows a user to do more than just ask the AI a question, rather you’d could ask the AI to handle calls, book flights or create a spreadsheet from data it gathered elsewhere.

One potential use for agents is in managing everyday life tasks. You could give ChatGPT with GPT-5 your dietary requirements, access to your smart fridge camera and your grocery store account and it could automatically order refills without you having to be involved.

I think this is unlikely to happen this year but agents is certainly the direction of travel for the AI industry, especially as more smart devices and systems become connected.

How different will GPT-5 be?

One thing we might see with GPT-5, particularly in ChatGPT, is OpenAI following Google with Gemini and giving it internet access by default. This would remove the problem of data cutoff where it only has knowledge as up to date as its training ending date.

Expanded multimodality will also likely mean interacting with GPT-5 by voice, video or speech becomes default rather than an extra option. This would make it easier for OpenAI to turn ChatGPT into a smart assistant like Siri or Google Gemini.

Finally, I think the context window will be much larger than is currently the case. It is currently about 128,000 tokens — which is how much of the conversation it can store in its memory before it forgets what you said at the start of a chat.

We’re already seeing some models such as Gemini Pro 1.5 with a million plus context window and these larger context windows are essential for video analysis due to the increased data points from a video compared to simple text or a still image.

Bring out the robots

One of the biggest trends in generative AI this past year has been in providing a brain for humanoid robots, allowing them to perform tasks on their own without a developer having to programme every action and command before the robot can carry it out.

OpenAI has invested heavily in robotics startup Figure, using GPT-4 to power the Figure 01 and GPT-5 will likely have some spatial awareness data as part of its training to make this even more reliable and capable — understanding how humans interact with the world.

Nvidia is also working on AI models in this space that will be widely available, and AI startup AI21’s founder Professor Amnon Shashua has launched Mentee Robotics to create GenAI powered robots that could find their way into homes and workplaces as early as next year.

Google is also building generative AI powered robots that could use future versions of the Gemini models, especially with massive context windows and Meta is training Llama to understand spatial information for more competent AI-based AR devices like the smart glasses.

What this all means

Essentially we’re starting to get to a point — as Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun predicts — where our entire digital lives go through an AI filter. Agents and multimodality in GPT-5 mean these AI models can perform tasks on our behalf, and robots put AI in the real world.

OpenAI is facing increasing competition from open source models from companies like Mistral and Meta, as well as direct competitors like Anthropic with Claude and Google with Gemini. You then have Microsoft shifting away from its reliance on OpenAI — although I still think OpenAI will feature at Build 2024 in May.

Before we see GPT-5 I think OpenAI will release an intermediate version such as GPT-4.5 with more up to date training data, a larger context window and improved performance. GPT-3.5 was a significant step up from the base GPT-3 model and kickstarted ChatGPT.

Altman says they have a number of exciting models and products to release this year including Sora, possibly the AI voice product Voice Engine and some form of next-gen AI language model.
